#i do like minato but he is Not father of the year

Note
If Minato wasn't handsome, friendly and a strong ninja, Naruto's fandom would be hating him on the same level that they hate Gaara's father for putting Kurama in Naruto even though he didn't need to do so. Because just as Minato put a Biju on his son for the good of the village, Rasa did the same thing with Gaara for the same reason.
100%~~ tbh we need to talk abt how fucked up it was for minato to turn his own son into a weapon of mass destruction, like yeah naruto ends up befriending the kyuubi but it’s also interesting how naruto’s first reaction to his father at the pain arc is to punch him and let him know how much it hurt to be hated by konoha .. so like fuck minato all my homies hate minato

ShikaTema is the Best Love Story in All of Naruto.
Okay, so Kishimoto and Ikemoto might do better with Boruto. However, as far as Naruto is concerned, ShikaTema is the best love story hands down. Let me explain.
Naruto x Hinata - Naruto spent 19 years either being oblivious to Hinata's existence or thinking she was weird.
Sasuke x Sakura - This relationship was so abusive that it was borderline criminal. I'm glad it's better now. I like Sarada, but Sasuke did not deserve a wife.
Sai x Ino - This is one of the better love stories. They kind of hit it off from the beginning in a lot of ways. However, aside from the light novel, we don't know much about it.
Asuma x Kurenai - Also, one of the better love stories, but we kind of just saw that they were together one day. Then before we know it, Asuma dies before the birth of his daughter.
Minato x Kushina - Another one of the better love stories. However, we were kind of rushed through the love story, because their entire love story was told in the past for obvious reasons.
Obito x Rin - I guess this is a good love story. I mean it almost ended in the destruction of the ENTIRE world, and Rin was in love with Kakashi the entire time, but what can you do? Did Rin and Obito end up together romantically? I have no idea. In death, Obito reverted back to his 13-14 year old self and spent eternity with 13-14 year old Rin. Yes, that's kind of romantic, but let's be honest, they can only be so romantic before it just becomes creepy and inappropriate (assuming the never age).
Now, the big one: Shikamaru x Temari.
I mean one could argue that this love story began with Temari fought Ten Ten. It was the first time Shikamaru noticed Temari. He took one look at her, and said that she had already beat Ten Ten. Naruto asked Shikamaru how he knew that, and Shikamaru said that he would not tell Naruto if Naruto couldn't figure it out himself.
Shikamaru vs Temari is the first time that Temari noticed Shikamaru, and she was utterly unimpressed with him until the very end of the fight when she realized that she was about 2 seconds for losing if Shikamaru had larger chakra reserves. From that point on, Shikamaru was never far from her mind.
Fast forward, these two lovely characters don't see each other again until Temari has to save Shikamaru from Tayuya. Shikamaru underestimates Temari's abilities, and Temari effortless kills Tayuya with her wind scythe jutsu. After seeing this, Shikamaru compares Temari to his mother.
This is important, because earlier, Shikamaru had asked his father why he married his mother, and Shikamaru's dad was basically like, "A good woman can change you."
Aside from a broken finger, Shikamaru visits the hospital to see how his severely injured friends are doing. Temari scolds him for being too emotional, because it seems as though Shikamaru is about to give up.
Shikamaru's like, "I don't need all this smoke." He gets up to leave, and his father is basically like, "You coward, are you going to let this woman talk to you crazy and all your comrades die in the future."
Shikamaru starts crying and this is the first time we see Temari show genuine concern and empathy for Shikamaru.
The next episode, I believe, Shikamaru is the one to see Temari and her brothers off from the Leaf Village as they head back to the sand.
Now, I'm going to fast forward to Shippuden. Yes, there's a filler arc in which Shikamaru saves Temari from another wind user. Upon returning to the Leaf, I believe Temari helps Shikamaru in the ninja academy with the students, and Shikamaru sees off the Sand Sibling again. You get the point.
Moving onto Shippuden, the first time we see Shikamaru in the village, we see him with Temari. Naruto keenly asks if the two of them are dating. Both Shikamaru and Temari think the assertion is hilarious, but it's actually pretty accurate.
Why, because without going through an entire play by play of every time Shikamaru and Temari were together in Shippuden, I will say this. If there's a Naruto episode with Temari in it, there's about an 80-90% that Shikamaru will be in that episode too, and that he will interact with Temari in some way.
For example, the war arc episode in which Konohamaru challenged Temari to a fight. Shikamaru did not need to be in that episode. Yet, Moegi and Udon went and found Shikamaru, so that Shikamaru could break up the fight. That was when Shikamaru said how scary Temari actually was.
There's even a shot little bonus video in which Shikamaru said, "What if it was Shikamaru Shippuden instead of Naruto Shippuden?" The an opening screen appears on the screen, and there's a silhouette of Shikamaru and Temari on the opening screen.
Temari is a long distance combat specialist. I feel that Shikamaru is mid-distance at best, but yet, both of them were in the same exact campaign during the war, and where was Temari? She was standing right next to Shikamaru.
When Shikamaru got caught up in the infinite genjustu, he dreamt of Temari by his side as they mutually agreed that marriage sucks.
My point is, as I skip a ton of points, Kishimoto had built up a relationship between these two characters for nearly 20 years. Mind you, that these characters DO NOT live in the same village. Temari has very little screen time. She has so little screen time, that she has a new outfit dang near every other time that we see her. However, the majority of the screen time she does have is with Shikamaru. The relationship between these two was set long before the light novels from Shikamaru were even considered.

Kid Kakashi is getting away from responsibility! does he?
I once saw an opinion that «Kakashi adheres to the rules to avoid responsibility for his actions so that he always has a safety net», and it seems to me that this is a fairly common misconception. so here's the thing...
contents | analysis of Kakashi and Sakumo's motives, a little speculation on the topic. also the text is a bit messy
Tumblr media
Sakumo commits suicide. the parent as a the only support in Kakashi's life has been lost, and Kakashi needs to grow up quickly, become responsible and not make paternal mistakes. a five-to-seven-year-old child must figure out the dilemma of an adult who raised him. not a bad task, huh?
the moral dilemma is as follows: should I recognize a warrior as a soul worthy of life, or as a tool used to save the majority?
a small child, by the way, should take it upon himself. he is this warrior. let me rephrase, it's "should I recognize myself as a soul worthy of life, or as a tool used to save the majority? what way should I recognise my father? what way he recognised himself by committing suicide?"
everything that happened makes Kakashi wonder if he (a shinobi) is worthy of living if he doesn't defend his homeland. a healthy little child would say "yes/idk/idc, let's go play". a child who experiences the suicide of a father deprived of honor and hounded for such humanity due to violation of military regulations chooses to consider himself unworthy. is it a fear of responsibility? let's take a closer look at the accents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CH 240. Minato and Obito's conversation.
so Sakumo saves his Shinobi group. he does this because he knows that they will not cope with the mission and will die in vain, without benefiting the village, and, moreover, harming it with the loss of labor. and, obviously, this was done out of humane motives, which is what the emphasis is on. what does Sakumo do as a team captain? Sakumo, who is clearly a skilled strategist and/or warrior, since he's compared in strength/fame to the three Sannins. he's retreating. does he do it just like that, without having a way out and a plan to come back? well, hardly. the dude has to be damn smart, judging by the way he was introduced. but will the embittered, war-weary shinobi figure out all the subtleties of the failure of Sakumo? the question is rhetorical.
let's think (I can't assert this, but it sounds logical) Sakumo wanted to return to the village to develop a new plan with a larger team, but did not have much time, because enemy attacked the land of Fire earlier. the consequence is hundreds, possibly thousands of civilian lives and so on. Sakumo would not be a respected captain if he simply refused the mission out of fear of someone else's death. fear of the meaninglessness of someone else's death? maybe. rather, it was a sense of duty to his team, a sense of the very responsibility for his leadership to these people. these things are not the same.
Sakumo's actions are driven by risk. the mission is a failure, but it was certainly intended as a justified failure. however, there is no point in proving this to others, they will not enter the position, because «you are the captain who gave the wrong order. you're a captain who broke the rules. you are to blame for these deaths.» a bunch of rescued shinobi are nothing against the background of thousands of war dead. and even this bunch thinks you fucked up, Captain.
Tumblr media
Interesting how, from Obito's words, we can find out that there is another opinion about Sakumo, a more positive(?) one. «in the line of duty» — that's how they call it, huh. I also want to note that Minato emphasizes the following idea: Sakumo was vilified and slandered. no one just wanted to figure out if he was this guilty.
so the whole topic was not about to be responsible or not. it's about responsibility as a duty and as a choice. It's about responsibility to a metaphorical face of the country and responsibility to specific people of that country. it's about different approaches to understanding humanity, peace, sacrifice, honour, about rethinking the duty of shinobi and the so-called will of Fire. and, most importantly, Sakumo's story is about the dishonour and disgrace that can come when no one wants to figure out why you acted that way. and no one should have, it's just circumstances. when you mess up, all your comrades stop being your friends and take on the face of a single military structure that doesn't care whether you wanted it better or not. you messed up, you violated the rules, and so many people died because of you, scum.
Tumblr media
Naruto Shippuden. Ending 33.
and with Sakumo's death, it all falls on his child. he's the son of a traitor. of course Kakashi's behavior afterward is a defense mechanism. (which I would like to talk about separately) if he was so afraid of responsibility, then why did he rush up the ranks? he would have sat as a genin and kept his head down. what kind of irresponsibility are we talking about?
Kakashi is not about irresponsibility and the consequences of it, after which he became responsible. he was already like that, in his own way, but it led to the disaster — again. that's the point. It's about fighting disgrace, and about trying to avoid unwanted consequences by one behavior, during which he got even worse.
so, I just seemed to justify Sakumo (can do vice versa) to show the background of Kakashi's behaviour and his attachment to rules. he doesn't just act out of spite and is not protected by the rules (to some extent, but not to the one mentioned at the beginning). he really concluded that in order to prevent civilian casualties, he would sometimes have to sacrifice his loved ones. and it's better not to have these loved ones at all. as events have shown, shinobi has no right to put his interests above, because his task is to protect others. it's selfish and disgraceful. he understood that shinobi is a tool. this is what Kakashi came to after Sakumo's death, because everything pointed to this: the fact that Sakumo was harassed by the same people he saved, and the fact that he was basically slandered by the whole village, and the fact that he himself eventually committed not a simple, not some kind of, but namely a ritual suicide with his own tanto.
so many people can't be wrong, can they? well... another rhetorical question.

18+ mdni. fem!reader.
“Fuck.”
IT’S the only word Naruto says as you sit down on his cock and make that first bounce that makes all of his blood rush south: fuck.
The curse is simple; breathless. Perhaps it could even be considered as uncharacteristically timorous for a man as talkative as him, but it nevertheless slips past his parted lips and hangs in-between the hot air between you without any sort of restraint. You swallow it down with the help of your tongue twirling around his own. Outright devour it.
Your favourite boyfriend you’ve ever had so far is panting as you lift your hips up and ever so slowly drag them back down so that you can fuck yourself even deeper and push him further inside your wet warmth than you did the first time around. He groans at the sensation of feeling your walls show love to his dick at long last; his foggy blue eyes rolling into the back of his head the moment he tips it back into the backrest and just moans.
The broken sound sends a chill rushing down your spine. It's nearly electric: how riddled with raw, relentless emotion it is. You’ve been dating for nearly six months, and you still haven’t grown tired of hearing it. Truth be told, you doubt you ever will get tired of it.
You suppose that he’s just that charming.
And besides being charming; he is needy as well. So fucking needy, but you’re needier. Transparent, glimmering slick gathers on the inner side of your thighs and clings to the skirt of your pretty dress as you repeat the movement and roll your hips against him to make you stick even more closely together in the already cramped-up space you've wound up in.
“Goddamn, fuck, fuck, fuck,” he grits out through clenched teeth as you pick up your pace. “You’re gonna make me bust s’hard, pretty… Gonna let me fill ya up? Yeah?”
“Naru, baby,” you sigh his pet name out, finding purchase on his broad shoulders. “You know that i-it gets… Messy when you do that.”
“I know… But I wanna.” He pauses for a second before he kisses your neck. “Please? I’m beggin’... Nnh, wanna cum inside you s’bad.”
He’s drawing in every breath like it’s sacred as he readjusts on the worn backseat of his equally as shitty car. It's a lousy, old thing he's bought with his own money that he's saved up while working a boring summer job at the nearby gas station before starting his first year of college, but you can tell that he's proud of it. Immensely so.
Proud, because it offers some sense of privacy that his house certainly isn't able to provide; taking his kind, but slightly nosy mother and equally as curious father into consideration. As much as he loves them, Naruto can’t help but feel slightly annoyed at how they've somehow managed to succeed in ruining every intimate moment between you ever since he’s introduced you to them.
After all, passing by his room whenever you swing by for a visit, his parents are armed with snacks and those wide smiles that make him feel embarrassed that he’s even brought his girl home in the first place. And never mind the kindness; it's their blindness that gets on his nerves!
Both Kushina and Minato seem to be utterly oblivious to the sheepish, slightly panicked smile you offer and the not-so-subtle eye roll their son gives whenever they interrupt you giving him a handjob underneath the blanket, or him being knuckles-deep inside your puffy cunt instead. And not just that, sometimes it's just a hot make out session in general, one that could very much lead to something more, if it had not been meddled with by his mom and dad.
And maybe that’s why he’s so happy he bought the damn car. He can go anywhere, anytime. Can take you on dates somewhere you haven’t been to before. Can fuck you like an animal in it, too, and not be afraid of how loud his moans get and how rough that, just as quick pat, pat, pat turns as he begins to slam home.
So, that’s how you find yourself at an empty parking lot at one in the morning that night; with your body entangled with your lovely boyfriend’s, and with his tongue dancing inside your mouth with such ferocity that it makes you think he’ll swallow you whole. He’s texted you to sneak out just so that he can get his dick wet. As lewd as it is, you can’t lie that it makes you feel flattered in some messed-up, slutty sort of way.
And you truly do feel like a slut; squeaking and breathing hard whilst getting smashed by his demanding cock like this. Do feel like a little whore as he spreads his legs just a little bit wider and wraps his large hands around the back of your thighs so that he can get a better grip on you. So that he can get himself balls deep inside of you and just start pounding the shit out of your poor pussy as you continue to ride him just because he's spammed you over text of how badly he needs you to do it.
His mouth is red and tender from all the kisses you’ve shared with him so far - bottom lip outright swollen from the way you keep nibbling on it and sucking it into your warm mouth to stop it from quivering. Still completely dressed, his sweatpants are tugged down just enough so that he could get inside your dripping pussy as quick as possible. The sleeves of his orange hoodie are rolled up to his elbows - one slightly higher up than the other, he’s that impatient - and the white t-shirt underneath has rode up so far his stomach that you're blessed with a nice visual of his sweat-coated abs; which you can’t help but trace your fingernails over, of course.
He clenches them whenever you look down and wiggle your hips on top of him. You're not sure if he's doing it on purpose - let’s be honest, any cocky nineteen-year-old would like to get a chance to show off such a vigorous, tight physique - but you certainly aren't going to complain about it. He’s just too pretty whenever he gets inexplicably horny like this.
Especially when he smiles up at you dazedly; the whites of his eyes glossy, and his pupils so, so big, and he whimpers out,
“Please lemme cum inside. Pretty please.”

Yandere Alphabet: Kakashi Hatake
Warnings: Yandere themes, control, possessive tendencies, spanking, kidnapping, sex, talk of death, mention of killing, mention of reader dying, manipulation

Tumblr media
Affection: How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?
Kakashi grew up alone, so I think his affection would be a bit too intense. He wouldn’t smother you all the time, and I don’t think he would be needy either, but he would want to dominate you, and one of those ways is by making sure that you can’t get away from him when he wants a hug or a kiss. He’s making sure you know damn well who’s in charge.
Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?
He’ll spill as much blood as he has to. He’s a dangerous Yandere who won’t let anyone walk all over him or his relationship with you. He would be jealous, you have to remember that because of his lonesome childhood. He’s not going to let anyone come between his Darling and him.
Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?
He would treat you with a tenderness you didn’t know he could show. He’s going to the store to buy ingredients for a special dinner on your first night with him. He wouldn’t necessarily mock you, but he would talk to you as if you were a spooked animal without realizing it. That is what would make you think you’re being mocked.
Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?
He’ll force you to sleep in the bed with him, but he won’t sleep with you until you’re ready for that next step. As much as he wants to fuck you, he’s self-aware enough to know that forcing himself on you wouldn’t lead to anything good. In fact, he knows it would thwart his goals in having you love him back.
Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?
It takes a really fucking long time for him to open up to you. He’s not at all inclined to do it at first, but after being with you for more than a year, he’d be willing to be vulnerable with you. First, he’ll tell you about his father. A month later, comes the talk about Obito and Rin. After that, he’ll spill about Minato. Once all that’s out on the table, he’s talking to you with pride about Team Seven.
Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?
He’s not happy. He wants you to feel comfortable with him. If you try to fight him, he’ll grab you by one wrist and the back of your neck, twist you until your back is facing him, and pin you down on the ground. He’ll sit on your squirming body for as long as he needs to until you calm down. Don’t doubt him. He’ll probably read a book to pass the time if it’s taking too long. “Are you done with your tantrum? I’m not going to put up with this childish behavior all night.”
Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?
He wouldn’t like the fact that you’re trying to escape, but he would watch you to see how far you can get before you tire out. He goes into Anbu mode and stalks you, quietly enjoying every single one of your survival mistakes.
Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?
He has the Sharingan, so his genjutsus would be your worst experience. He wouldn’t want to break you mentally or have you go insane. You wouldn’t be yourself anymore after that, and he fell in love with you for who you are entirely. However, he’s not afraid to place you in a world of his own if you were to cross him.
Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?
Kakashi wants you to be with him forever, but he isn’t in it for marriage or kids. He’ll only marry you/become a dad if that’s what you want. He just wants someone he can love as he grows old. Once he has found his person, that is his future ideal with his s/o.
Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?
Of course he gets jealous, you silly goose! He’s a possessive Yandere. He wouldn’t be able to stand a guy even glancing in your direction. He’d be holding your hand and dragging you home. In the case that you aren’t kidnapped or haven’t been kidnapped yet, when you get home, he’s stripping you and making you realize whom you belong to with each thrust inside of you. You’re calling his name and begging for more. It’s exactly what you need.
Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?
He’s mostly a hugger from behind kind of guy. He likes the feeling of you in his arms as he nuzzles your neck, moving your hair to the side. He likes to put his hands on your waist or thighs. He definitely isn’t shy while touching you, seeing it as a claim. He needs others to know you’re his. You have to understand his more reserved/calm disposition, so I can’t see him pushing you up against a tree and making out with you in public. He’s more subtle than that, walking around with an arm slung around your waist to help other men know you’re unavailable.
Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?
He’ll ask you out to dinner and bring flowers when picking you up. He prefers walks as well, so like a true gentleman, he’s walking you home to make sure you’re safe.
Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?
Yes, abso-fucking-lutely. If you were to spot him with Might Guy having one of their contests, you would never think, Oh, that guy certainly kills people who talk to his s/o and then kidnaps said person so that he can be with them forever.
Naughty: How would they punish their darling?
Kakashi deals with brats all day, so when he comes home to one, he’s spanking you. He’s spanking you long and hard. He’s not stopping until he sees bruises or even blisters. Your tears and pleas for mercy are no guarantee that he’ll call it a night.
Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?
You can wave goodbye to your freedom. You also don’t get a choice in what you eat anymore since he’s the one feeding you. The only time he asks you what you want to eat is when it’s your birthday. Your right to privacy is out the window. If you’re getting dressed, he’s not going to knock. He’ll just open the door and walk right in.
Patience: How patient are they with their darling?
The first time he sighs is a warning, and you better pay attention to it because after that sigh, there are no second chances. He can ignore some things pretty easily, but there are also some things he just won’t tolerate. As mentioned before, if he has to pin you down, he can be patient while he waits for you to calm yourself. However, if you try to emotionally manipulate him by bringing up his past, he no longer has the patience to deal with you. I can see him as someone threatening you, choking you slightly, or using a genjutsu on you to stop your attempts at manipulation.
Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?
You’d never be able to successfully escape him unless he died, so forget about that one. If you die, he will mourn you for the longest time before finally giving up on love. He wouldn’t try to find another s/o after you. If you love him back, and you told him to move on with your dying words because it would make you happy to know he’s happy, then I could see him trying his best to move on from you. It would be hard, but I think he could manage to do it.
Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?
He’s not letting you go. He’s self-aware, but he’s too happy with you. After being lonely for so long, he finally has someone he can be with, someone to love and cherish. He doesn’t feel guilty at all, he’s rather possessive of you.
Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?
Definitely childhood trauma. His father killed himself, he watched his two teammates die, and he watched his Sensei die. Not only that, but when he grew up and became attached to Team Seven, one of the little fuckers decided to run off and join Orochimaru.
Tears: How do they feel about seeing their darling scream, cry, and/or isolate themselves?
He hates seeing you cry. He understands that tears come with certain punishments, so he doesn’t mind those ones too much. If you’re crying outside of being punished, then he’ll do whatever he can to fix it. He won’t allow you to isolate yourself though. Sure, he’ll give you space, but he knows when you’re purposely trying to distance yourself from him, and he won’t have any of that nonsense.
Unique: Would they do anything different from the classic yandere?
Though he has you, he’s still going to enjoy his sexy reading material. Just because he has you doesn’t mean you get all of his attention. The reason why this makes Kakashi different from classic Yanderes is because they would typically see their Darling as enough to capture their attention. They become the Yandere’s sole focus. However, you are not the only thing Kakashi focuses on. Does this bother you? GOOD! He’ll use that against you.
Vice: What weakness can their darling exploit in order to escape?
None, he’s a top shinobi with a Sharingan. Bitch even became Hokage! He can see through your manipulations, he’s not afraid to see you cry, and he’ll kill anyone you ask for help, and he’ll get away with it too.
Wit’s end: Would they ever hurt their darling?
He won’t kill you. He loves you too much to do that. He isn’t above inflicting heavy doses of pain, however. Push too hard, and you might find yourself at the sharp end of a kunai or reeling from a harsh genjutsu.
Xoanon: How much would they revere or worship their darling? To what length would they go to win their darling over?
He isn’t one to worship you. He loves you so much, but he won’t let you push him around or manipulate him. He’ll move a mountain for you, though. He’ll protect you with everything he has. That’s about as far as he’s willing to go, however.
Yearn: How long do they pine after their darling before they snap?
I’m placing a bet for four to five months before he snaps.
Zenith: Would they ever break their darling?
He won’t break you. If he wanted a fucking table, he’d buy one. That’s exactly how he’d think of you if he broke you: a lifeless object. Sure, you wouldn’t be running anytime soon, but I can’t see him being happy because of that. He would want you back so badly if you were to break.

I saw this article calling Sasuke a Villain and how the live-action shouldn't include his "villain" arc, because it "felt tedious and too convoluted to the bigger narrative" and instead they should make him a pivot for the fight against the Otsutsuki...
Did this person watch the anime or read the manga?
Article from CBR, Title: The Naruto Live-Action Movie Doesn't Need To Adapt This Villain Arc
Tumblr media
1. Protect Konoha from what? The Uchiha wanted to end the decades long discrimination and oppression they were facing at the hands of the higher ups... (Not to mention that when Kurama attacked the village (under genjutsu, when Naruto was born), and during the konoha crush, no other villages went to attack the Leaf after the events), not even after the Pein arc...
2. Most people would hate growing up alone, and why was that sentence in bold?
3. Sasuke didn't find out about the true reason Itachi did what he did, until after Itachi died, as well as the real reason behind said Coup... as far as I am aware. And why wouldn't he want revenge against Konoha (specifically the 3 people who are left that caused all of his trauma and the uchiha genocide, it'd be 4 but the Sandaime Hokage was already dead by this point in the story)
4. What "wars" against Madara and Obito? There was only 1 War against them, the 4th great ninja war, that lasted 2 days a.k.a. approximately ~212 episodes, including filler (volumes 55 through 59 in the Manga, according to google)
Tumblr media
"Naruto and Sasuke were reincarnations of her sons (Ashura and Indra, respectively)"
Okay, so the author didn't watch nor read Naruto...
Indra and Ashura Otsutsuki are not Kaguya's sons... they are her grandsons 👁️👄👁️ Homura and Hagoromo Otsutsuki are her sons... and Hagoromo is Ashura and Indra's father…
I feel like the author doesn't know much about Kaguya either, if they did they'd know her story.
"The advantage of Sasuke being a rebel without defecting from Konoha is that Naruto would have the help needed to fight the big villains of the franchise: the Ōtsutsuki."
When the time came, was Sasuke not helping Naruto with that? 🧐 And why shouldn't he have defected from Konoha? What good could they do for him?
Tumblr media
Why does Sasuke need to be convinced to return home, when his home was taken from him by this "home" the author speaks of, that "home" being Konoha? Why should he return to the place that treated his people so poorly that they felt they no other choice but to do a coup against the people in charge of Konoha only to be wiped out for daring to stand up for themselves after years of oppression...?
Konoha, specifically Danzo, the third hokage, and 2 hogake advisors, Homura and Koharu (3 of which where Tobirama Senju's students and all 4 of which were on his personal team, and we all know what Tobi thought of the Uchiha) forced Itachi to wipeout his whole clan, excluding Sasuke, and then blamed him for it. They swept what they did under a filthy rug, that already had many skeletons piling up, and acted like he was the most evil person... He was a child and he was forced to do that and to become a fugitive by the old people in charge, who had no business being in charge of Konoha since there should've been a 5th Hokage by then... (regardless if Itachi regretted it or not, which he never really does)
Tumblr media
I won't say it...😇
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"Sasuke could learn more about how Indra developed a dark side, which passed down to the Uchiha, while Ashura's light gave way to the Senju and Uzumaki (Naruto's family) clans"
1. While I do agree that Naruto should've learnt more of the Uzumaki (and the Namikaze), besides finding out they excelled in Sealing Jutsus, had very long lives and were a bit savage (it wasn't in-depth at all, and there is no one to teach him, since the Uzumaki are also victims of genocide (in which Konoha did not help protect them) and well, I don't know what happened to Minato's people)
2. And that Sasuke should've learnt more of his people (but how was he going to, when he was the only one left at age 7/8?)
3. Indra's dark side... it wasn't passed down, nor did it emerge until his father gave his little brother the title of successor and expected him to follow without questions, having his birthright taken away because he was more introverted than his little brother whom their father called "the flunky useless dropout younger brother" (according to a panel I saw). And implied, at least to me, that ninjustu was created for wars and all things evil (Indra created ninjustu when he was just a child). ah yes his dark side the Uchiha inherited, that darkness of wanting to be treated like people and with respect in the village they helped make.
Tumblr media
4. Kushina calls the Uzumaki, among other things, a bit savage. Batsuma Senju punched Hashirama, a child at the time, for being angry/sad that his little brother died, saying he was disrespecting his brother (and him) by basically questioning the system. Tobirama is a Senju, who was not shy about his hatred and prejudice against the Uchiha Clan (he is after all the founder of the bigoted psuedo science that was the "Curse of Hatred" the Uchiha are supposedly afflicted by, a clan that according to him is cursed and called Sasuke "a brat possessed by Uchiha evil") and that's on Ashura's "light" that gave way for his descendants, the Uzumaki and the Senju, "a clan of love~"🥰
Tumblr media
Right, because he wasn't a pivot to the story, nor did his and naruto's story have any "heart and impact"... Right...
Tumblr media
At some point, I wonder if some of this article is just satire 😅

I'm eternally full of wrath over the fact no one in Konoha knew about the chakra imprints of Naruto's parents in the seal.
Naruto would've died to Pein without ever knowing who his parents were because no one manned up and let him know what he had a right to know.
If not for his parents loving him enough to want to leave behind failsafes in case his seal was ever damaged so he'd at least get to be protected by them personally one more time he never fucking would've known. Maybe not until the fourth war arc with Minato as an edo tensei summoned by Sasuke and do you think Naruto would've EASILY worked with 4th Hokage who sealed the Kyubi into him right away? No. Konoha's inability to own up to its fuck ups and to be honest with the victims of those fuck ups would've endangered the entire world. And for what? "I just didn't feel up to talking about it" or maybe "We'll tell him when he's older/stronger/better/more mature/at least a chunin/can keep secrets" when they shouldn't be goalposting this anyway and also fucking you don't feel up to it? Naruto didn't feel up to being an orphan hated and despised by literally every adult around him
I'm sorry to continue to rant but
AND ANOTHER THING
Naruto goes literally YEARS without knowing the rasengan was his FATHER'S jutsu. YEARS.
Using this jutsu, his dad invented, without knowing it, all the time in every fight. And Naruto thinks he's just using a badass technique the perv sage showed him which belonged to the yondaime, he has no idea what it should mean to him and he is kept in the dark, for years.
Kakashi was 26-27 at the start of the show and 30 when Naruto comes back from the time skip, trauma or no that is a grown-ass man an adult the entire time we know him, who just.. observes this hard-working teen in his care who's clearly all about his bonds (See the Gaara rescue and the find Sasuke missions) because he never had anyone in his corner before team 7 and he just.. goes "hmm" and never fucking tells him anything about his parents who Kakashi knew? EITHER OF HIS PARENTS??? Anything about them!?? What they were like? Their habits? Their techniques? How happy they were he was going to be born? How he wasn't born an orphan? How he was loved? DOESN'T EVEN TRY TO PASS DOWN FUINJUTSU TO THE UZUMAKI HEIR BECAUSE WHAT?! NARUTO'S 'TOO DUMB' or 'Too much of a bother to explain all the backstory why he should know/why I'm teaching it/too much of a bother to teach such a complicated thing' or 'the village doesn't want its jinchuriki to know how its own seal works we'd rather keep that power in our hands' like what. What would even be a good reason he is literally his sensei, and Jiraiya had three years to train him and focused on 'unlocking the seal to make use of more seals' while again not teaching Naruto how the seal worked at all and then once he got a scar from naruto abandoning the plan. Yes, Naruto got proper taijutsu training and training with the toad summons but still. What a waste. I'm still fuming.
~~~
Naruto got failed all the way around by a lot of people and only a few attempted to really and truly make up for it.
i started naruto a few years ago and made it to like the second arc in shippuden before stopping so i never made it to the kakashi backstory but....your notes compel me. tell me more.
okay so like take this with several grains of salt because the sum total of my sources here are "my understanding of the plot and characters as synthesized from the Abridged Revised Illustrated Edition my datemate's been writing me over the last two months", a handful of clips, and the only three (3) episodes of this 600+ episode show i've seen in my life, none of the three of which were relevant to the kakashi backstory
h o w e v e r
oh my god. my dude. my man. [holds him up like longcat] there is so much wrong with you and i'm enthralled.
so like here's the thing. here's the big takeaway that i'm understanding. this whole series is an ongoing exercise in generational trauma bullshit and everyone trying so hard to course-correct from their own tragic backstories that they accidentally set up their kids/students to have completely different but still somehow exactly the same tragic backstories, and naruto's chronic case of shounen anime power-of-friendship-itis is, i mean. yes it's him being the platonic ideal of Pure Of Heart And Dumb Of Ass but it's also a direct response to seeing ninja society's perpetual tragic backstory generator and going "this is bullshit, why are we even fighting? tell me what your side is, and i'll tell you what our side is, and then we can figure out how to make our sides the same side so none of us have to fight about it at all!" and honestly i love that but this ain't about him
so like. to explain kakashi we have to explain kakashi's father sakumo first. because sakumo was one of konoha's powerhouses, been on tons of successful missions, well-liked, well-respected, one of the earliest and loudest adopters of konoha's then-new and radical pivot towards a ninja being people first and disposable tools never ideology.
he really, genuinely believed in that.
except then he and his team went on a mission. and it went really, really badly. and he had to choose between completing the mission objective or saving his teammates' lives, and he chose their lives, because those who fail their missions may be scum, but those who abandon their teammates are worse, right?
... no, actually.
just because the ideology had been circulating and people were broadly toeing the party line didn't mean they actually believed in it, and sakumo's mission failure was already causing critical backlash.after sakumo made it back to konoha he was a fucking pariah for it. he was never officially reprimanded, but he didn't need to be if people went out of their way to personally spit at his feet, and... one day young kakashi comes home to find his father's body on the floor, wrists slit and suicide note devolving into begging apologies beside him.
Tumblr media
this, as you may imagine, fucked him up, and didn't exactly predispose him towards believing the party line about the value of life.
he gets put on a genin team that was. basically the alpha build of the sasuke-sakura-naruto team dynamic. because it was him, and rin the healer girl with a massive crush on him who he never gave the time of day, and obito the Loudest High-Vis Uchiha Who Ever Lived who had a massive crush on her, and minato their teacher who was doing his absolute best to try and get them through to understanding each other, which is an Ordeal
Tumblr media
because kakashi at this point has internalized that the party line is pretty lies for the gullible, that his teammates are only there to drag him down, and it drives obito nuts because that's the same exact bullshit that his family keeps spouting that he's rejected as thoroughly as a 12.9-year-old can, how does kakashi not see that it's bullshit? and there's rin who's looking at kakashi like i can fix him?? and getting upset when he doesn't let them in at all or even really visibly care that they're trying, and it's one hell of a dysfunction junction but minato is working on it.
... and then the worst happens. their team is caught out alone and everything goes wrong. rin is captured and obito's body is half-crushed under a rock and one of kakashi's eyes got slashed out and none of them are going to make it out of this, at this rate, until obito calls kakashi closer and tells him to take his eye. take the sharingan. he'd give him both but the other one got squished. kakashi will do more with it than obito ever did, so use it to save rin. please. and here's kakashi in the middle of field surgery on his dying teammate finally, horribly realizing that sometimes the win condition is, actually, protecting your friends, and he's already lost. but he can still try to save rin, it was obito's dying wish.
by the time he found her it was already too late.
the people who'd captured her had tried, poorly, hastily, messily, to seal one of the Tailed Beasts into her, and she was already dying. she had a demon thrashing in her soul that was tearing her to shreds around it and all kakashi could do was mercy kill her
Tumblr media
and she thanked him for it.
and he goes back to konoha, sole survivor of his team, charred by the newfound comprehension of why you have to care and what it feels like to lose what you love and with obito's sharingan in his head and rin's blood on his hands and something in him that was already hanging on by a thread finally snapped.
and the only thing he could think to do, the only way he could even parse that grief through, is to just... make himself into a living memorial to them. he started trying to live as obito. adopt his mannerisms, his interests, craft his entire adult persona around his memories of his friend like a grave offering, and quarantine the bleakly mercenary anything-to-get-the-job-done ice in him off into the hound mask he wore as part of konoha's black ops division, which he joined at the ripe old age of way too fucking young.
Tumblr media
he uses the sharingan to incredibly brutally efficient effect, copying enemy jutsus and bringing them back until the library's overflowing with them. but in the end, no matter how many he can technically use, they're still just cheap copies. and so is he.
and in the meantime the uchiha are collectively losing their shit about this random outside kid having one of their eyes in his head and getting all kinds of dubious 'glory' with it, and oh, wouldn't you look at that, they have a prodigy too!
Tumblr media
... yeah.
itachi gets shoved through the rank advancements on a timeframe of "whatever he did you have to do it faster and better." and then the kyuubi broke free. and minato and kushina died, and a fuckton of the home guard uchiha died, and suddenly he's the most able-bodied fighter in their clan overnight at age 11 and the uchiha pull strings to get him into ANBU as well.
and kakashi is his teammate.
Tumblr media
kakashi is his teammate and kakashi sees in itachi a whole awful lot of the edges of the way kakashi used to be, sees itachi trying to live up to and embody the absolutely impossible ideal of the perfect ninja, and he tries so god damn hard to nudge him gently towards something, anything, other than that.
but in the meantime, the uchiha have been... scheming. with danzo, Guy With The World's Biggest Chip On His Shoulder About Not Being Hokage, who's been marinating in a paranoia spiral for years. danzo had tried to set himself up as kakashi's palpatine, and tried to get him to assassinate hiruzen, and kakashi hears him out, and turns right around and goes to hiruzen with it instead, and danzo is pissed. the uchiha are pissed. danzo warns hiruzen that they're almost definitely going to try again and they're gonna make the uchihas' little prodigy do it this time, and kakashi silently braces to have to fight and maybe kill his teammate he was trying so hard for, and then...
and then itachi, who'd been watching his clan get. worse. for a long time. finds his cousin shisui, his best friend shishui, bleeding out in the dirt, who tells him everything, tells him danzo tried to have shisui killed for finding it out, and it worked, he's dying, but he's not dead yet, so please. make it count.
.......................................... And Then The Uchiha Massacre.
and now itachi is one more person that kakashi tried to care about who got destroyed.
and then fast forward a little bit further, he's been retired from active-duty ANBU after a decade-plus of service because the sharingan is starting to burn him out, he's starting to lurch to a halt like unwound clockwork without something to Do, and... he gets given team seven. the worst of konoha's gremlin children.
a bitter, disillusioned loner with a chip on his shoulder and the skill to back it up, the healer girl with a crush on him that he never gives the time of day, and the Loudest High-Vis Pest In The Village.
you see where this is going.
kakashi who at this point has been coasting along by bouncing between mask-personae for years is now having to dynamically engage with life again because if he isn't present and actively responding to his team then there's a nonzero chance he'll turn around to find all three of them chewing on the drywall and he cannot default to scripted responses because they don't work on a pack of middle schoolers hellbent on squabbling til the cows come home. and it's kind of good for him?
but also, uh. [gestures broadly towards... Sasuke(TM) and the rest of the plot]
and yeah i'm not gonna get too much further into it because i'm not confident enough in my own comprehension of the timeline to do that XD but like.
hatake kakashi is a scarecrow of a man stitched together out of his dead best friend, a hunting hound, and his dead best friend again, who's spent his entire life behind one mask or another, who over the course of the series keeps surviving shit that by all odds he shouldn't have, or survives specifically because the people he cares about throw their plot armor around him before they die, and he has a personality mostly composed of the crumpled-up pages of the memetically worst-written trashy bodice-ripper novels ever published because obito used to love them and the inexplicable receipts of other people's love for him, and i want to put him in a gas station hot dog roller and perceive him.
thank you for coming to my ted talk XD
Hey!
I don’t know if you already talked about it, but I have a question about our favorite copy-nin (it’s about his dad’s suicide so if that’s too sensitive topic for you, please drop it)
I was wondering, do you think he hated him because of what he’s done? That he abandoned him and left completely alone in dangerous world?
Also, considering Kakashi’s later depression. Do you think that he would may want to end his life, if not the fact that he hated this and thought about it as a cowardice because of his dad?
It was just going around my head, and I don’t know anyone who knows his character better 😊
Thank you for the ask
Tumblr media
Read the answer under the cut 👇
Even tho kid Kakashi always acted as if he was mad at Sakumo because he failed the mission and broke the rules but in reality all of that anger was because Sakumo suffered so much because of it to the point that he killed himself, it was more for Sakumo's sake than Kakashi himself and we see that when Kakashi and Sakumo meet again after Kakashi's death when Kakashi tells him this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The anger we hear in Kakashi's voice when he says "I felt so bitter" and his fist clinging so hard like this shows that thinking about his father's suffering still hurts him even after all of those years so his fixation on following the rules at the time was a result of him believing that if his dad followed the rules he would have stayed the legend that everyone loved, he wouldn't have suffered and would've stayed alive and we see that in his response to Obito here too
Tumblr media
People who don't obey the rules suffer and die and this is why he was trying to get his team to follow the rules as well because as much as he tried to hide this but he actually cared about his team so much and this is why having them follow the rules is so important to him because he doesn't want them to suffer like his dad and have the same fate as him either.
As for Kakashi's depression and why he never thought about ending his life, him hating this because it's what Sakumo did was one thing but there's also another reason which is that Obito sacrificed his life so that Kakashi can live so he would never throw away and disrespect Obito's sacrifice like this, plus, Obito gave him his Sharingan because he wanted to see the future with Kakashi being his eye, so him killing himself would mean that he would kill Obito too all over again, however dying in the battlefield tho while protecting his ppl and friends is a different story, it's how Obito, Rin and Minato sensei died so it's a welcomed honorable death, it's how a Shinobi should die
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course that was just in his Anbu days before he meets our favorite little gremlin children that makes him not interested in dying at all, not even in the battlefield.
Naruto...A Lesson in Attachment
Tumblr media
This is Naruto Uzumaki.
Tumblr media
And so is this.
So, how did he go from doing this:
Tumblr media
Desecrating and vandalizing the village
To doing this:
Tumblr media
Leading it.
We'll explore that, but first want to start where it all began.
Attachment!
Tumblr media
These are Naruto's parents: Minato Namikaze, his dad. All around great shinobi, a prodigy, super talented, became Hokage at a really young age. And Kushina Uzumaki, his mom, quite an impressive kunoichi (female shinobi) in her own right.
So, yes, from the start Naruto had an extra leg-up with two loving parents who loved him and cared for him.
Tumblr media
At least for a couple of hours.
Yes, he lost both of his parents as a newborn. So, what happened to that child? Well, it's below, but first a lesson about attachment and why it's important.
First there are four types of attachment:
Secure - confident, non-reactive, comes back from adversity; kids feel safe, secure, and trusting
Tumblr media
Adult Naruto and his own family.
2. Avoidant-Dismissive - Independent, show little emotional needs, unemotional, little physical contact, manage own distress
Tumblr media
Hear me out here, I would say Little Sasuke (sahs-kay) and his relationship with his father. Sasuke was independent and parents focused their attention primarily on his older brother. He eventually grew to become self-reliant and used other people to get his needs met, forming very few attachments along the way.
3. Disorganized/ Avoidant-Fearful - Inconsistent emotional support, crave attention from but also fear caregivers; often stemming from trauma
Tumblr media
Anybody with this man, Orochimaru. Orochimaru thrived on creating disorganized attachments in the children he experimented on, kidnapped, worked with.
Or anybody with Danzo. Both preyed on orphans and their lack of secure attachments.
Tumblr media
4. Anxious - Inconsistent parenting, so seeks reassurance to elicit caring response. May become really attached, dependent on others in a relationship to fulfill emotional needs, may become preoccupied with others. Place high hopes on others and get attached to potential. Sounds a little like our hero.
Tumblr media
Inconsistent parenting
Tumblr media
Granted, it wasn't the village leader's job to raise him, but he did step up and take responsibility for him. Just was inconsistent.
Becomes easily attached and preoccupied with others and their potential.
Tumblr media
He literally chased Sasuke around for years (!) to force a friendship. He became obsessed not with the person Sasuke was, but the person he could be.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
No matter how many times Sasuke tried to kill him or refused to come home.
Anxious attachment.
Poor attachment also can lead to behavioral struggles.
Tumblr media
And poor academic performance
Tumblr media
Naruto finished last in his academy class and failed three times.
So, what changed?
Healthy Relationships!
Tumblr media
Iruka sensei, his first teacher, and ramen!
Tumblr media
Team 7! Sasuke, Naruto, Sakura, and Kakashi-sensei!
Tumblr media
And friends!
It's kinda funny how all the racists try to blame Tobirama in their own racism.
Uchihas aren't another race, they just the same as Senju. They all have one ancestor, and Kaguya obviously wasn't thousands and thousands years ago for evolution split up Senju and Uchiha enough.
But it so easy to make Uchiha another to blame Tobirama. So easy to change their race so Tobirama's haters can be racist as hell. (Because changing the race of character is already racist enough, ask Hollywood)
But well, my dear Tobirama's haters, I have a really bad news for you. Your the most precious Madara is racist and sexist as hell... because if you make Uchiha another race, these words are totally unforgivable.
Tumblr media
What? No one asked him or made him, he said it by his own will. Unless Uchiha just another clan as Senju, he is racist.
Oh, what you are saying?
What Madara was the victim of Senju? So did Tobirama, his little brother Itama was killed by five Uchiha (and one of them looks Tajima-like so...)
What, Tobirama did a lot racist comments? But he didn't.
First of all, please, take a dictionary and look in it. Yes, Tobirama kinda disrespectful and discriminatory but ISN'T racist. Uchiha aren't another race as blue-eyed or raven-haired aren't another race, and not any discrimination is racism.
Secondly, he didn't said anything too much. He commented on Sasuke? Well, you all would be so happy to see the bastard that make you kill your precious student some minutes ago and now talking that this Uchiha has a question for you. You'll be furious, won't you? And Tobirama just offended them.
Actually, Sasuke did ask about his opinion and "what do you mean evil" and Tobirama calmly answered. And he is a bit respectful for their power of love!
Tumblr media
Some haters says that he started the discrimination. Well, if they learnt the history, they would know that police&army have so important role that sometimes it's them deciding the ruler of country and government.
Did you get it? Tobirama gave Uchiha the force to stop him. He gave them a power and put them above all the Konoha's clans. He literally gave them a chance to silence Madara-2 by themselves... Because Madara-2 would be fatal for the clan's reputation like Obito did. And now it's him who started the discrimination?! Maybe it were lazy bastard Hiruzen and radical trash Danzou that twisted Tobirama's ideals, weren't they?
But that about evil part? Yeah, Tobirama is quite harsh person...
Like really harsh.
He roasts Minato for technique's name.
Tumblr media
And he calls Minato and Naruto idiots. Poor Minato is roasted to shame and excuses.
Tumblr media
His brother isn't exception.
Tumblr media
What? Is it gokage meeting? Nope, it's time to roast elder brother again.
Tumblr media
Who are you? The shinobi's ancestor? Well, it won't save you from roasting because you gave so nice advice and sooo in time! You were so helpful!
Tumblr media
I mean I'm so in love with his harsh manners but yeah, he really talks a lot of shit because he could and who'll stop him?
So, then we know that his manners shouldn't be trusted, that we'll see in his action?
Idea of peace (and of course he is roasting his father, yeah, typical japanese respect for parents)
Tumblr media
His respects for Madara. Yeah, he is kinda respects him and take him as example to rule as much as brother... And Hashirama is best hokage for Tobirama.
Tumblr media
Moreover, he is glad for Hashirama's and Madara's peace, even after Madara's attack on the most precious Konoha and all 4the Shinobi's War. He smiled!
Tumblr media
And last but not the least he wanted to save Sasuke from the death. He easily agreed with idea Uchiha inherits Hashirama's idea of Hokage and gave another example of Uchiha.
I can see why he can be hated. Yeah, he talks a lot of shit in harsh manner. He kinda provoked Madara with his talks with Hashirama (but I have more questions to spying Madara). He created the Edo Tensei that takes sacrifices, so his mind is twisted. He is definitely hipocrite with his "i created and prohibited" and "make your reputation to another kage... SHUT FUCKING UP!"
And yeah, Tobirama is kinda prejudiced to Uchiha, it's hard to deny.
But it's not him the racist in but his haters that labeled him as one. (And stop hypocrisy. It's both of them are racists in your definition or no one of them)
Hey, how are u?
Also, I wanted to ask what do you think about Naruto and Sasura’s relationship nature. I mean, do you think he ever truly loved her? His speech in shippuden about his feelings for her seemed really genuine, but except that I don’t really see love in his behavior, more like a childish crush? I don’t buy what was said in The Last about him trying to hit on her only to win with Sasuke, it doesn’t really makes sense to me. Anyway, what is your opinion? Thanks for answering xo
hello anon, i’m fine.
naruto’s behaviour towards sakura and overall attraction to women is inconsistent. we can easily tell that he truly never had romantic feelings for her, but a crush is, in my opinion, debatable… and really a crush in the sense of “she’s cute, i like her” kind of thing, which is basically what we see when sakura is introduced
Tumblr media
now what is interesting is that the last wasn’t wrong to show that maybe it was about sasuke, it just definitely wasn’t so naruto could compete with sasuke
Tumblr media
“i feel like i finally understand why i like her” right after sakura said she wants to be acknowledged by sasuke because she likes him? really? we know that naruto wants to be acknowledged by everyone, that’s the core of his character, but in this context, this just seems kinda ambiguous… he doesn’t wanna win over sasuke, he just wants his acknowledgement. when you take naruto’s interactions with sasuke and sakura into consideration after this quote, as well his behaviour, you see that basically naruto mimics heterosexuality by pretending to like sakura, while actually focusing his attention on sasuke, he mistakes his feelings/attraction for sasuke for a rivalry at first and a friendship later. i’ll give you some examples.
he doesn’t have much tact to compliment sakura. i know this is what she wanted to hear, but i just find it so funny honestly.
Tumblr media
there are also a few more moments involving sakura’s appearance and naruto, in which a) naruto says haku is prettier than her b) naruto says after two years that they haven’t seen each other that she looked the same even though it seems by her body language that she wanted to be complimented and c) when other people called sakura ugly and naruto didn’t even comment about it or tried to defend her. now let’s look at this
Tumblr media
is there some need to defend sasuke’s honour or something? no one is even insulting sasuke here, just comparing him and sai. the japanese word naruto uses here can be used to compliment someone’s looks btw and he not only says it, but he emphasises it at the end. there’s pretty much a huge gap between “the cute girl” he’s supposed to like a lot and sasuke, who is above it.
how about when naruto is just doing absolutely nothing but thinking of sasuke
Tumblr media
until he gets interrupted by sakura… so he says he was planning to go on a date with her. are you for real?
Tumblr media
this one is even funnier… sakura is taking care of naruto after he hurt his arm with rasenshuriken. someone in love would surely be happy to be closer to your loved one while they are healing you, and it’s what it seems that naruto is gonna say
Tumblr media
until you turn to the next page
Tumblr media
he’s just really happy they are in this together… for sasuke. you really can’t make this shit up.
i’ve also pointed out that in the chapter in which sakura decides to fake confess to naruto and go after sasuke to kill him, sakura says “that fool’s got such a crush on me” about naruto, and yet the only appearance naruto makes in the same chapter is him lying down and pining over sasuke. yikes.
the only “narusaku” moment during war on naruto’s part is when minato asks naruto if sakura is his girlfriend to which he reacts like
Tumblr media
it’s not only that this is comic relief and it just seems like he wants to look good in front of his father, because he already knows about his mom’s speech and wishes when his parents died, it’s also that he hesitates to answer it.
but when he’s saying goodbye and really referencing the whole speech topic by topic and talking about important things…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he deflects the subject. very convenient and smart of kishimoto when he’s not allowed to explicitly say what he wants to, such as homosexuality.
and of course, there’s the infamous fake confession
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in which naruto basically looks annoyed... not the reaction of someone who is in love, i would say.
and the cherry on top
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the promise he made to sakura hasn’t changed anything, he would act the same with or without it.
Tumblr media
narusaku dead and buried.
those inconsistencies happen over and over and they always involve sasuke somehow… like i said, projecting his real feelings for sasuke onto sakura. now if you think he thought she was cute and all, i can give you the benefit of the doubt, but being in love with her? no way. naruto has never loved her like that, and i honestly can’t even tell that he loved as a friend either when he pretty much treats her the same way he treats his other konoha comrades: takes responsibility for everything and doesn’t let anyone get involved…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
…unless it’s sasuke, obviously, then he will bear his burdens and see so much pain that he just can’t leave it alone.
Note: I'm back! Also I'm not sure where I'm going with this tbh...
TW: Omegaverse, obvi. Questioning (Secondary Gender)? Potential Dysphoria?
The whine did escape him in the end. Kakashi felt mortified for all but two seconds before he felt Iruka’s body against his. Strong arms brought him toward a firm chest and it was the best feeling in the entire world. He couldn’t remember the last time he had experienced this level of safety. Was it before his father’s death or while on Minato-Sensei’s team?
It sure hadn’t been the case since he had become the one in charge.
Kakashi had never dreamed of becoming a Captain or Jonin-Sensei. He wanted to be good. To be better than his father, and that was all. Being responsible for his own life was more than enough pressure.
Being an alpha had been convenient — expected of him on some level — but if acting as an omega brought him such comfort, he would keep doing it. Gladly.
Kakashi realized he was way past caring what his peers thought of him.
Omega Kakashi couldn’t be worse than Friend-Killer Kakashi.
And, also it wasn’t a fully conscious decision on his part, Kakashi wasn’t the type to do things by half. He always had greater control over his scent. He could erase it without patches and only used them because it was still safer and a way to keep quiet. It didn’t take much effort to turn his fresh pine scent into a sweeter one more akin to pine resin.
Syrupy was a word used to describe omegas’ scents, right?
Iruka smelled of black tea, paper, and… driftwood. It was a homey scent and nothing like their peers who usually smelled smokey and/or bitter. Kakashi wanted to cover himself with Iruka’s scent, or better yet, have the other alpha actively cover him with it.
Kakashi pressed his uncovered nose to Iruka’s left scent gland while avoiding rubbing his own scent on the other’s skin. He didn’t want to ruin it.
They stood like that for a short while and months — years — of tension progressively left Kakashi’s body. He trusted Iruka to carry more and more of his weight.
His alpha wouldn’t let him down after all.
***
Iruka didn’t know what to think. He had somehow managed to coerce Kakashi into following him to the hospital. Well, more like he had dragged him by the hand.
His face was still flushed from the public display when Shizune ushered them into a room, Kakashi, Kurenai, and him. The others had been rebuked by the med-nin’s glare and were waiting — more like pacing — in the corridor.
Shizune had Kakashi and Iruka sitting side by side on a bed. The other alpha’s scent kept peaking up and down, and he had once again gotten rid of his face cover. Iruka watched, concerned, as Kakashi took openly deep breaths as if he couldn’t quite get enough air in his lungs.
Kurenai stood silent in a corner, only there because of Iruka’s pleading gaze.
Tsunade arrived soon after and she frowned as she noticed Iruka.
Great. He knew this was going to come back to bite him in the ass one way or another.
“Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t you an alpha, Sensei?” Tsunade asked.
“I am.”
Iruka swallowed past the lump in his throat. He knew something was wrong with Kakashi but was mostly worried he had somehow made it worse.
Genma had mentioned Kakashi wasn’t smelling right. His normal scent was fresh, not sweet, and yet the alpha’s scent had gone from pine resin to butterscotch — sycamore syrup, Kurenai had called it — seemingly trying to entice Iruka into resuming their previous embrace.
Anyone who didn’t know any better would have pinned Kakashi as an omega if crossing their paths as they were on their way to the hospital.
Tsunade didn’t add anything at first. She put on a pair of gloves before turning her attention to Kakashi. He didn’t budge nor showed any sign of aggressivity as she moved closer. She touched his shoulder first, then moved up to his neck. He tensed and Iruka squeezed the hand that had remained in his all this time.
It didn’t feel right. Kakashi would probably hate that Iruka had seen such an intimate episode of his life when he got better but, if he got comfort from his presence, then Iruka wasn’t going to chicken out.
“His scent glands are swollen,” Tsunade said. “He is pumping way too many hormones into them to modulate his scent.”
She sighed.
“Do you hear me, brat?” She was looking Kakashi straight in the eyes now. “If you have a problem with being an alpha, you come to me. You don’t fuck up your hormonal balance even more than it already is.”
Kakashi didn’t answer but Iruka could tell he was listening and thinking. Calculating even.
A small eternity passed before the alpha tilted his head at a forty-five angle — a familiar dog-like gesture.
“Can you really do it?” he asked. His voice was rough from misuse. “Change my designation?”
Iruka bit his lips to silence any noise that threatened to escape his mouth.
He shouldn’t be hearing this. They barely knew each other. Granted every time they interacted tended to be life-changing for one of them if not both but still.
Iruka’s only consolation was that the other three seemed as surprised as he was… except they recovered faster and soon looked thoughtful.
“If it’s about your aggressivity problem, we don’t have to go that far,” Tsunade said at last. “I could give you something to lower your testosterone… or we could target your problem at its root and try scent therapy.”
Kakashi wrinkled his nose at the mention of scent therapy.
“I’m not spending my days plastered to some omega,” he said.
Which, rude. But Iruka guessed it wasn’t a statement against omegas per se.
“Who said anything about pairing you up with an omega, brat?” Tsunade replied. “I was rather hoping Iruka-Sensei would agree to let you keep cuddling him.”
Wait, what?
The scar is also part of the reason he constantly wears his hoodie at the Beach despite the hot weather to conceal it away from other players who may see it as a potential weakness. Chishiya likes to be seen as untouchable after all.
Family/Friends:
Mother: Chishiya Yui.
Status: Alive.
Relationship— Nonexistent. Chishiya’s mother is often absent from his life, only showing up on the occasional weekend to check in— the checking in being ignoring him half the time she’s there. Due to the fact that she never cared to explain her disappearance or where she was going to either him or her husband, Chishiya learned to stop asking and accepted that maybe she never wanted to be a mother or a wife to begin with.
Father: Chishiya Minato.
Status: Alive.
Relationship— Their relationship has always been rocky— an understatement if you ask Chishiya. Father-like- son, Chishiya’s father is a proud and stubborn man. They didn’t get much time to bond given his father was always at work, working 12 hours at the hospital almost every day with little time to acknowledge Chishiya and cold shouldering him when getting the chance. They often clashed whenever speaking and after his consistent pushing for Chishiya to follow in his footsteps as a doctor and his constant chiding for him to do better even with the perfect grades at school, Chishiya finally snapped and decided to cut off all contact. Both of his parents’ neglect is why he is the way he is and doesn’t understand the basic concept of love— whether it be platonic or romantic. It’s also why he strives to be better than everyone else thanks to his father drumming it over and over into his head on a daily basis.
Siblings: Only child.
Spouse: N/A. Rarely engages in relationships or sex for that matter, only the occasional hook-up. (Depends on the verse. Shipping can be discussed, but I won’t allow force shipping.)
Pets: N/A. His parents never allowed them in the house, and when growing up he lost interest in getting any pets.
Kids: N/A. (Again, depends on the verse.)
Friends: Chishiya doesn’t have any friends in the real world by choice— he simply doesn’t feel the need to have them, nor did he ever feel any connection to the people around him while he was growing up. After Borderland though, he became quite close to Kuina, Arisu and Usagi.
Other:
Personality/Traits: Sarcastic, Witty, Highly intelligent, Selfish, Uncaring, Nonchalant, Calm, Collected, Introverted, Anti-social, Manipulative, Cold-Hearted, Cynical, Logical, Realist, Enigmatic, Confident, Merciless, Proud, Stubborn, Apathetic, Stoic.
MBTI Type: INTJ— INTJ type is Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, and Judging, which means they are energized by time alone, focused on big picture ideas and concepts, led by logic and reason, and organized. This combination of personality preferences produces people who are analytical, innovative, and strategic.
Any mental illness: Depression. Antisocial personality disorder— Often takes anti-depressants to keep his depression at bay but considering he doesn’t have them in Borderland, he goes off the rails and let’s the intrusive thoughts start to seep in. This often leads to him acting out as a means to find new ways to distract himself from the hurt and past traumas that are usually numbed by the pills. Chishiya loathes to feel anything. He’d much rather be emotionless and numb while getting off on other people’s pain. He’s a bit of a sociopath.
Weapons: Makeshift taser, makeshift flamethrower, switchblade and makeshift bombs. Basically anything he can get his hands on, he’ll try and craft it into a weapon.
Backstory:
Born to two doctors, Chishiya comes from a rich family— but quickly learned the hard way that money doesn’t buy happiness. From a young age, Chishiya learned how to be independent due to his parents never being there for him. He learned how to cook, clean and look after himself. Pretty much the result of both his parents being pressured by society to start a family, Chishiya was the product of what his parents hoped would get people off their backs once and for all.
Neglected and forgotten about half the time, Chishiya grew bitter to the world around him believing that humanity is inheritently selfish and that love doesn’t exist.
Forced into med school by his father by the time he was eighteen, Chishiya accepted his fate and tried to see the positive of joining the profession thinking that perhaps if he could help people then he could find the meaning of life and prove to himself that humanity wasn’t all that bad after all.. unfortunately it only lead him further down the path of bitterness to the world around him.
Never returning home after graduating and with a degree now under his belt, Chishiya opted to completely cut off all contact with his parents and changed his phone number to start anew. Soon after, he sealed a position at Sakurazawa University Hospital, starting out as a medical intern. At first all was well and he could actually see a decent future for himself there. Things were looking up and he was finally helping people and healing a part of himself in the process.. that was until the letters started to roll in and he was forced to prioritise the treatment of richer patients, the less fortunate often dying due to much needed treatment and surgeries that got delayed. 9/10 times, they were kids that died..
Depression quickly set in and Chishiya fell into despair, completely growing numb to everything and the last of his hope for humanity, and to find his calling in life diminished. Death didn’t bother him anymore. Nothing did, and he learned to stop caring about anything and everyone including himself.
It’s why he treats Borderland as a playground and has little concern for his own life, using sarcasm as a shield to hide behind. His mindset is: Now he gets to choose who lives and who dies. Oh how the tables have turned.
What if Sakumo had lived, how much would Kakashi's life have changed after graduating from the Academy?
[Part 3]
Kakashi graduated from the Academy a year earlier than his classmates. This surprised no one. He was assigned to a team of two adult chunin, under the leadership of Shibi Aburame. It was clear that Kakashi didn't get along with his teammates. Three disbanded teams and four reprimands from the Third Hokage later, Kakashi found himself sitting on the riverbank in the company of Minato. Spending time with Namikaze was not something uncommon for Kakashi. Due to Minato being Jiraiya's student, he was a frequent visitor to the Hatake family's home whenever Jiraiya returned to the village. And while everyone around him considered Minato a walking legend, for Kakashi he was more like an older brother who never missed an opportunity to tease him.
"What are we doing here? Shouldn't you be on a mission?" - Kakashi turned to the guy and frowned slightly.
"The Third told me about your difficult relationship with the teams", -Minato’s calm voice resembled the murmur of a river.
Kakashi felt the guy's gaze on him and averted his eyes to the side, watching the setting sun.
"They all complained about you to the Third. But, despite all the conflicts within the teams, you perfectly completed every assigned mission."
The boy shrugged his shoulders embarrassedly. Minato smiled at the corner of his lips.
"Why did conflicts arise, Kakashi?"
"They constantly talked about father", - the boy muttered reluctantly. - "And about Jiraiya Ji-san."
Minato pursed his lips. Even though there were no more open fights, even a year later people continued to discuss the Hatake family.
"And about you", - Kakashi said barely audibly.
"About me?" - Minato raised his eyebrows.
"Yes!" - Kakashi exploded, clenching his fists furiously. - "They could never draw up a strategy themselves. And when I suggested the optimal plan, they just laughed and cast condescending glances at me. But my plans were always the best. The captains admitted this."
Minato looked at Kakashi in amazement. He had never seen the boy show his emotions so openly before. Apparently he had been storing it inside himself for too long.
"I know they’re just jealous", - Kakashi folded his arms over his chest. - "To my father, Jiraiya Ji-san, you and me. Therefore, they took out their anger and disrupted our missions, and made me guilty. They're just incompetent jerks."
Minato laughed softly and squeezed the boy's shoulder reassuringly.
"Thank you for telling me about this", - Namikaze couldn’t resist poking Kakashi on the cheek. - "The Third asked me to take you with me."
Kakashi's eyes widened in surprise.
"But you always do solo missions!" - the boy objected. - "Like father and Jiraiya Ji-san."
"An extraordinary exam for graduation from the Academy is planned in three weeks", - Namikaze shared with him. - "The Third suggested that it would be easier for you to form a team with your peers."
Kakashi snorted.
"As soon as the exams are over, I will become the captain of the newly formed team", - the guy continued. - "I hope you won’t ruin it too?"
"Nii-san!" - the boy exclaimed indignantly.
Minato laughed and ruffled his hair. Namikaze's smile shone brighter than the sun, Kakashi had to squint to avoid going blind.
"Just try to act more friendly", - Minato said softly. - "They are your friends."
"The main thing is that it doesn’t turn out to be Obito", - Kakashi rolled his eyes. - "I don't want to be on a team with this idiot."
Minato shook his head and stood up from the ground, holding out his hand to the boy.
"Let's go train. I'll show you my new technique."
They went to the nearest training ground. Minato stopped and extended one hand forward with a slight smile. Kakashi watched the guy with interest. Minato's techniques were often very fast and precise, and you had to be very careful not to miss anything. A few seconds passed and then a bright blue ball began to form on Minato's palm.
"Wow!" - Kakashi couldn’t hold back his delighted scream. - "This is your chakra!"
"Yes", - Minato smiled at the boy’s reaction. - "I spent three years developing it. You are the second person I have shown this technique to."
"Is it true?" - Kakashi smirked at the edge of his lips. - "And what did Kushina-san say?"
"She came up with a name" - as soon as he heard his lover’s name, Minato shined. - "Rasengan."
"I bet I can master this technique before the end of the exams", - Kakashi suddenly suggested.
"You want a bet?" - in surprise, the Rasengan dissipated on Minato’s hand. - "I didn’t know you were so gambling."
"I like challenges", - Kakashi shrugged. - "I always win".
Minato raised one eyebrow in disbelief.
"Well, not always, sometimes Guy wins, but only because he is lucky", - Kakashi folded his arms over his chest.
"And what do you want to bet on?"
"If I win, I can choose my teammates."
"This is a great idea, Kakashi", - Minato tilted his head to the side thoughtfully. - "But, unfortunately, this is impossible. Only the Hokage has the right to form teams. There's nothing I can do here."
"When will you become Hokage", - Kakashi muttered displeasedly.
"What?"
"Nothing", - the boy shook his head. - "Okay, then another idea. If I win, then you will teach me the Flying Thunder God Technique."
"Do you want to master my technique so that I can then teach you my other technique?" - Minato drawled, looking carefully at Kakashi.
"Yes."
"You look a lot like your uncle."
"Hey!" - Kakashi screamed indignantly. - "Take your words back. It is not true!"
Minato laughed and smiled softly at the boy.
"Okay, I agree to your terms. And I sincerely wish you victory."
Tsurune Book 3 Chapter 2 - Rainbow-Colored (Part 1)
I don’t know if you guys can tell...but my motivation for working on this novel is kinda low. But thankfully the author has ways of pushing me by putting in some of the most insane shit that makes me question if I know how to read
Also for the Tsurune: Irodori no Issha audio dramas: it’s not that I’m too lazy to do them, it’s that I keep forgetting about them. I’ll get them all out eventually
Glossary here
Full list of translations here
Translation Notes
In the morning, Minato was standing on the balcony of his room.
Raindrops beaded the railing. The transparent drops were bathed in the morning sun and glistened in orange, green, and blue. As he gazed at the sparkling water droplets glittering together like jewels, he heard his father’s voice calling him from downstairs. He hurriedly wiped the laundry pole.
Suddenly, a figure entered his field of vision. It seemed to be looking at him. He moved closer to the railing, but the figure was already gone. Thinking that it must have been his imagination, he held the empty laundry basket in his hands.
Recently, Minato had made some changes to his morning routine. He had added ritual chanting to the gods and sutra chanting after doing his run. He learned this from Saionji-sensei, and had stopped since he got target panic in his third year of middle school. Many foreign kyudo enthusiasts were inspired by Zen in the Art of Archery to start kyudo. Mindfulness was underpinned by Buddhist concepts.
The sutra Minato was reading was the Heart Sutra. It gave concrete examples of the Buddhist idea of emptiness and explained how to attain the wisdom of the Buddha. The author was unknown, but it was translated into Chinese by Xuanzang, made famous by Journey to the West. It was a very short sutra of 262 characters and was composed in the form of Kannon talking to Sariputra.
Minato, who was in fifth grade when he heard the Japanese translation, wondered what “All is empty.” When he told Saionji-sensei that he didn’t like the idea of enlightenment if it meant the absence of feelings of happiness and sadness because it wasn’t human-like, Saionji-sensei told him, “You aren’t capable of contemplation. Please study more.”
The Golden Week training camp of three days and two nights began today.
The venue was the same as last year, Yata Shrine.
The rain that lasted the night before cleared up, and red-purple mountain azaleas and white fringed irises were blooming in profusion. Because of the renovation work, the Yata no Mori kyudojo was now extremely bright with LED lightning instead of fluorescent lights.
But Minato’s spirits were heavy. Lately, Masa-san wasn’t looking him in the eye.
He would immediately look away whenever their eyes met, and he seemed somewhat distant. Minato hadn’t seen his grin in days. Was he avoiding him? Or rather, he felt like he was being ignored. Did I do something to make him hate me? He wondered if he yelled something like “Masa-san’s a dirty old geezer!” in his sleep without realizing it. Once he started worrying about it, he couldn’t stop himself from spiralling deeper and deeper. His head was spinning with delusions summoning more delusions.
Tommy-sensei was standing in front of the referee’s table.
“First of all, the selected members will do a demonstration of the competition format.”
The selected members, Kaito, Ryouhei, Seiya, Kanbayashi, and Minato, lined up at the entrance.
At last year’s training camp, they had a lot of trouble stepping together as five, but now they had grown to the point where they were able to match each other’s steps in an instant with someone they were grouped with for the first time. Kaito, walking in the lead, learnt to feel the presence of the people behind him and didn’t miss anyone. After he nocked his arrow and fixed his eyes on the target, he raised his bow towards the sky.
After everyone finished four shots, the results were announced. It was four, three, four, two, for a total of seventeen hits.
Kanbayashi sank down onto the floor after returning his bow to the rack.
“I didn’t think this when I was watching you all, but everyone’s kai is really long. Being between President Takehaya and Narumiya-senpai is really nerve-wracking.”
Seiya knelt down next to him.
“Don’t be so nervous. Just be your normal self.”
Overhearing their conversation, Kaito glared at them.
“Kai isn’t ‘long,’ but ‘deep.’ And it’s no good shrivelling or getting too worked up, no matter who’s in front of you or behind you. Well, I can’t blame you for getting distracted if Seiya’s in front of you, though.”
Seiya stood up and got his face right up to Kaito’s nose.
“I wonder what do you mean by that, Onogi-senpai.”
“I meant it exactly as it is.”
Kanbayashi blinked his eyes rapidly and Keyaki looked fed up as they watched Kaito and Seiya’s exchange. When Nanao was about to step in between them to divert the conversation, Tommy-sensei asked them to gather again.
“Now, the theme of this camp will be ‘Steady Mind and Body.’ The way you breathe is very important.”
The first-years, excluding the competitors, gathered near the makiwara, while the rest stood in front of the targets.
Masa-san undertook demonstrating the practical skills.
“Let’s start by practicing the ‘dantian breathing technique’ again. I want you to listen with the understanding that there are various theories about dantians and I may correct this at a later date.”
“Yes, sir,” everyone answered.
“First, about dantians. It means ‘a place where energy is cultivated.’ There’s a theory that there are three dantians: upper, middle, and lower, but generally speaking, dantian refers to the lower abdomen dantian, which is three sun below the navel. That is, about ten centimeters below. It’s in the middle of the belly, not in front. Next, let me explain the ‘martial arts-style dantian breathing technique.’ The reason why I added the words martial arts is because when we say abdominal breathing or dantian breathing, people are generally taught to expand their abdomens when inhaling and contract it when exhaling.”
Ryouhei raised his hand.
“My sister had childhood asthma, and she told me she learned how to do it at the hospital. They do the same thing in yoga, too.”
“However, in kyudo, exhaling doesn’t cause the stomach to depress. In recent years, there’s a theory that has been adopted by athletes and has proven successful. That is the Stanford-style ‘IAP breathing method,’ also known as the ‘intra-abdominal pressure breathing.’ It is a breathing method that increases the pressure in the abdomen and tightens the area around the abdomen when inhaling and exhaling. Top athletes and musicians can naturally do IAP breathing.”
“Musicians do IAP breathing too?”
“I’m sure some of you have been told to project your voices from your stomachs during choir or vocal training. An easy way to understand this is that clenching your butt holes can help you produce higher-pitched sounds.”
“Ahh, ahh,” Ryouhei tried it, and he certainly did sound different. It had a resonance to it, not just a flat sound.
“For a singer, their body is an instrument. It’s the same for archers. The tsurune is the sound of the bow and string when an arrow is shot. Bow, string, and person become a musical instrument and resonate. Even among ‘tsuruoto,’ ‘tsurune’ refers to a particularly clear and beautifully lingering sound. To be alive means to breathe. There are times when everyone unconsciously does dantian breathing, but that’s when they’re laughing like ‘ha-ha-ha.’”
Seiya sighed.
“It feels like we’re listening to a monk’s sermon rather than an explanation of shooting techniques.”
“I am a priest. Yata Shrine is a shrine that has its roots in Shugendo, so there’s a fusion of Shinto and Buddhism here. Many teachings have been handed down, such as the Buddhism of Gautama Buddha, the esoteric Buddhism of En no Ozunu, and the secret teachings of Kuukai.”
“In other words, Masa-san, you’re a hybrid of a priest, monk, and old man.”
“Hahaha, you sure have a way with words, Seiya.”
The two’s smiles froze the boys there. The six girls gathered, and Hanazawa and Shiragiku put their hands on their own abdomens and Seo’s to compare the firmness.
After that, they began practicing on their own. Before they knew it, the first-year Himuro became the oomae. Minato wondered just when did he get there. He was like a stagehand, someone who was on stage but treated as though they didn’t exist.
Masa-san looked at everyone’s shooting in order starting from the front, but he skipped over Minato and went straight to the person behind him.
His eyes blinked weakly. Kanbayashi was also doing the same thing in front of the makiwara.
Minato covered his eyes to hide how much he was blinking.
Tumblr media
Early next morning.
Same as last year, Minato was woken up by Masa-san’s older brother Ren pulling his hair. When he turned around, he found that he was sprawled out on someone else’s futon with one elbow propped up. Ryouhei, awakened by Minato’s voice, tried to pull Ren’s arm away. Beside him, Nanao was still half-asleep.
After finishing the morning preparations, the club members gathered in the front shrine. They were attending the morning offering and worship.
Masa-san chanted the ritual prayer loudly. After reciting the words in a rite called the shubatsu, the purification was performed with the oonusa and hot salt water. (1) Minato couldn’t look at Masa-san in fear that he would avert his gaze again. He turned his eyes to the window and caught a dark shadow moving quickly.
The club members then proceeded to clean up. The second-year boys were in charge of the precincts. When Minato and Kaito finished sweeping around the pond and took a breather, they found a white tabby cat sitting under the shrubbery.
Minato slowly crouched next to the cat so as to not make eye contact. If you looked into the eyes of an animal you were meeting for the first time, it would think you were threatening them and run away. You hold out the back of you hand to have it sniff it, and if it gives you permission, you stroked its chin. His grandfather taught him this way to interact with cats when he was little.
The cat purred.
It was the sound of “I love it.”
As Minato was stroking its back, it got onto its back as though tell him to stroke its belly. Minato learned that it was a mother cat.
Kaito’s feet had become a puddle of cats in an instant. A brown tabby cat with one ear cut into a V-shape clung to him with its tail up.
“Oh, is this a Sakura cat?”
Sakura cats were stray cats that had been spayed and neutered by animal protection groups. They were also called local cats. They got their name because the V-shaped scar looked like a sakura petal.
The white tabby cat kicked him and left, perhaps because he stroked him too persistently.
Kaito’s cat puddle also disbanded. In their place, Ryouhei, Nanao, and Seiya gathered.
“Minato, you really love fluffy things,” Ryouhei said.
“I’ve always wondered this. Why aren’t humans covered with fur and feathers? We used to have them, didn’t we? Did we like clinging together?”
Hearing that, Seiya and Ryouhei sandwiched Minato between them and they ended up looking like a game of oshikura manju. (2)
“Stop it, you guys! I didn’t mean to clinging to me.”
“Really? Then what did you mean?”
Ryouhei separated from him with a puzzled look on his face. It seemed that his habit from childhood still hadn’t gone away. Not wanting to go through that again, Minato took a step away from his two childhood friends.
Kaito propped his chin on the end of the broom handle.
“Seiya, as the club president, you shouldn’t be fooling around.”
“Huh? Kaito, do you want to be squeezed too?”
“No way! I’m gonna punch you!”
Seiya covered his mouth with his hand and turned around, his shoulders shaking.
Minato expressed what was on his mind to Kaito.
“Actually, recently, I feel like someone’s been watching me. Ever since the training camp started.”
“Huh? Aren’t you just being too self-conscious?”
“It might be one of Nanao’s groupies. We have to be careful.”
Seiya smiled. The mole under his eye stood out. “I don’t think it’s either of them. It’s probably just your imagination. Come on, let’s go back and change into our hakama.”
“Yeah…I guess you’re right.”
Seiya, Ryouhei, and Nanao headed for the kyudojo.
Kaito, who was one step behind, couldn’t quite make sense of it. Seiya was so overprotective of Minato that Hanazawa, Shiragiku, and Seo teased him by saying, “Seiya Home Security, watching over you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.” But for some reason, he wasn’t concerned about this case.
Minato was walking away from the four of them. Nanao walked in place to slow down his pace and naturally ended up next to Minato.
“Minato, I really am okay. Is there something you’re worrying about too? Tell me about it if you want to.”
“…Lately, our eyes aren’t meeting.”
“Oh, oh? Is this about romance?”
“Not at all.”
“Hmm, the eyes can say as much as the mouth, and you can pretty much tell what people are looking at. For example, who’s the person you care about looking at? Who’s the person you always care about looking at, Minato?”
“Mm, I guess it’s the gods?”
“Mm, that might be outside my area of expertise.”
A bird chirped.
The two looked up and they could see the blue sky and the fleecy clouds between the budding trees. At first, they couldn’t make out where the bird song was coming from, but when they strained their eyes, they were able to spot a varied tit on the treetops.
Minato’s eyes, which reflected the fresh green, shook.
“It’s so pretty.”
“That’s right …I realized that I wasn’t so frustrated when I didn’t make it into the regular lineup. I was fine with being a substitute.”
“You really are fine with that?”
“What’s important to me isn’t winning or receiving praise from anyone, but being able to feel Kacchan’s presence.”
“——I want you to stay by my side.”
“Whoa, Minato, you can read my mind?”
“Of course not. Maybe we just happened to think the same thing?”
“Yeah. If you had that ability, you’d be at the top of the class after reading Seiya’s mind. Oh, look, there’s Masa-san.”
In the direction Nanao pointed, there was Masa-san, who had changed into his practice clothes, and Ren, who had a camera in his hand. The two of them were smiling, and Masa-san had a childish expression on his face that wasn’t normally seen.
When Nanao waved at them with a “Merha,” they also replied with “Merha,” but Minato looked away.
The twins ripped the target papers together.
I’m so frustrated. I’m so frustrated.
They peeled off the hole-filled target papers from the target frames.
To lose to that newbie and have our places next to Shuu stolen. Ah, I can’t believe it.
They were cleaning up after practice at Kirisaki High School’s kyudo club.
In order to set a good example for the new members, the second-years were taking the initiative. After washing the target frames with water, they left the rest to the first-years and went to the azuchi. When they slammed their trowels against it, part of the azuchi crumbled, and they hurriedly scooped up the crumbled earth.
Senichi and Manji felt the same way. It was absolutely unacceptable to be disrespected by a cocky junior who had no idea what he was talking about, just when they were starting to communicate with their seniors, Kabashima and Yushima. They themselves had also done quite a lot of trouble, but they of course put that aside. They quickly swept inconvenient things under the carpet.
Shuu was silently facing the makiwara. Kuon asked him a question with a composed expression.
“Fujiwara-senpai, you promised to watch my shooting when we’re together, didn’t you?”
When someone around them remarked, “I hate to admit it, but the two of them are a perfect match in terms of looks, ability, and pedigree. Even the clothes they wear are first-rate,” the twins glared at the person who made that comment.
A few days later, Senichi and Manji sprang into action. At every possible location, they guarded Shuu by staying ahead of Kuon.
What should we do to win against him?
He’s a strong man. Men speak with their fists.
They started going to a kickboxing gym. Jumping rope, shadow boxing, hitting mitts. One-two hook and one-two uppercut, middle kick from cut, then straight right. Kyudo emphasized shooting form, but in kickboxing, even if your form was good, it was meaningless if it didn’t work on your opponent. Put your weight in it and bring your fist down!
After sweating, they took care of their hair and skin to master the art of beauty. Ayurvedic beauty treatments from India. Dripping oil on the forehead had a great detoxifying effect. Their tired skin and hair became glossy and lustrous, resulting in well-moisturized young men.
They decided to completely remake their appearances. Aiming to be fashionable men, they were stylish even down to the places that weren’t visible. They bought silk underwear and layered obis (3) at a long-established kimono shop, and wore intellectual-looking glasses. While they were at it, they put a wig and silk hat on Yushima. They had used those props for the Rokumeikan Café during the school festival.
Yushima Kaoru, dressed in his kyudo uniform and silver wig, stared at them with narrowed eyes. At this time, the kyudojo was only for second-years, but there was a stir coming from the female members.
Manji spoke. “Kaoru-senpai, the crew cut is cool and on, but have you considered growing out your hair?”
“…Hey, twins, do you see something wrong with the direction of questions here?”
Kabashima also chimed in. “I don’t care if you look nicer or got stronger, but what about kyudo practice? I hope you haven’t been slacking off.”
“Huh? We practice properly. Look at our feet. The gaps between our toes are open, and we were praised for having nice feet. Maybe we can be both archers and martial fighters.”
Senichi and Manji took off their tabi socks and showed off their bare feet. The two faced each other and began playing Guu Choki Paa (4) and feet rock-paper-scissors. Kabashima buried his head in his hands even more at their comical movements.
“You know, a fighting man has to put his life on the line. What do you think Fujiwara recommended hot and cold baths and home cooking for?”
“So we can become househusbands and mountain hermits.”
“No, you got it wrong. They are ways to recover and nourish the body, to develop the strength and steadfastness necessary for an athlete.”
“Nope, nope, no way. We’re living far away from that kind of thing.”
“Hey, Fujiwara. Say something to these disgraces of Kirisaki High School. It’s setting a bad example for the juniors if their senpais are messing around too much.”
Called to by Kabashima, Shuu put down his bow. He sat on his heels and took off his yugake. His straight back, graceful nape of his neck, and swaying bangs made all those who saw him fall into raptures.
“Isn’t it good to try different things? You never know if something’s good or bad until you try it, and you might get something out of it.”
“Fujiwara, are you aware that you actually spoil those twins too much?”
“My father told me that a well-bred person respects others. Life dwells even in the plants and roadside stones. The rock cannot be cut by those who cannot see its life. He said that this isn’t a metaphor, but him telling the truth as it is. Sen and Man put their hands after the meal. The two of them are fine just the way they are.”
“Shuu!”
Senichi and Manji rushed over and tugged on Shuu’s sleeves from both sides. As expected, he didn’t seem to like that and quickly brushed them off before returning to practice.
Kuon, who was watching the situation from afar, raised his eyebrows.
He had a dream the other day.
In it, he and Shuu were having a conversation on a wide lawn with a Western-style building behind them.
“I’m thinking of welcoming a dog into my family,” Shuu said.
“Have you decided on the breed?”
“It’s hard to decide between Japanese and Western. A black Shiba inu, a Labrador Retriever, or do I go with the classics and choose a standard poodle? It’s pleasant to imagine a furry creature snuggled up to one’s side.”
“It is wonderful.”
“That’s right. There’s a cute creature that’s always bright and energetic, and when it sees my face, it flies towards me, and even shrinks its huge body when it fails.”
And then, Shuu turned to a tall man.  “Your hand,” he said.
“Awoo,” he said and put out his hand.
“Your chin.”
“Awoo—wait, what are you doing, Shuu-kun!”
That was when he woke up. Kuon was covered in cold sweat.
What kind of dream was that?
Who is this guy who’s so familiar with my Fujiwara-senpai?
The crime of disrespect is also serious. Unforgivable, even if it’s just a dream, something like this would never happen. Fujiwara Shuu is a solitary genius. Everyone kneels before him in awe and reverence. Being the sublime Young Lord is his truth. Associating with lowly people will only degrade your status. Playing around with them is outrageous.
Dogs must be strictly disciplined.
The training camp at the Yata no Mori Kyudojo was on its last day.
A practice match was held. A total of twenty-five mixed male and female archers, excluding five first-year students who didn’t participate in the training camp, shot four arrows in zasha in teams of five. The order was decided with “yaburi.” Himura took an arrow from each participant, held it in a bundle behind his back, and then placed them in a random order on the floor, one at a time. The order was determined by checking the arrow and the owner calling out their own name.
The entrance ceremony began. The first-years were a bit slow, with their shoulders tensed and their steps not in sync with each other, but their spirit was well-conveyed.
It was fun shooting in a different lineup than usual. Seiya was behind Seo, and Hanazawa and Shiragiku were behind Kaito, neither of them giving an inch. What made kyudo great was that it allowed men and women of all ages to compete without handicaps.
The first-years were checking that they have memorized the shooting form and Eight Stages of Shooting, so hitting was of secondary importance. Still, they were so happy that they felt like they could soar when they hit one. Everyone shouted “Yes” as if it were their own. When all the shots were finished, there were three who hit with all four arrows. It became a tie-breaking match, and in order to shorten the time, it was an izume match instead of an enkin match.
Masa-san and Minato left the kyudojo to pick up the kimonos for the nosha.
The disciple followed the master who was walking in a hurry, but there was no casual chat as usual. The two of them were in the positions of working adult and student, and keenly aware of their different speeds and strides.
Unable to stand it, Minato called out to him.
“Masa-san.”
“What is it? If there’s something you need, it can wait until after camp is over.”
“Since this year’s beginners are using the bow earlier than usual, I know that you and Tommy-sensei must keep an eye on them in order to prevent accidents. But why are you only ignoring me?”
“Wait, Minato, let’s talk about this later.”
“It’s true that no matter how many times I’m told, I forget to tense the little finger on my left hand, and I can’t even do dantian breathing, but am I such a terrible disciple that I’m given up on?”
When Minato grabbed Masa-san’s arm, he heard a quiet voice.
“I’m sorry, but please don’t look at me with those eyes.”
Minato let go of his grasping hand.
In his blurry vision, he saw Masa-san covering his face with his left hand.
“It’s not what you think. When Seiya took a survey of the club members, he found that ‘Coach Takigawa shows favouritism towards the second-year boys. Especially Narumiya-senpai.’ So, to avoid misunderstandings, I tried not to talk to you too much in front of the first-years.”
“…Huh?”
“And Minato, you were the one who didn’t react when I waved to you.”
“I thought you didn’t want to make eye contact with me.”
“It’s more like there are times when it’s troublesome.”
“What do you mean, troublesome? Tell me clearly.”
“I sometimes find myself wanting to pat your forehead uncontrollably, but I can’t let anyone else see me like that, now can I?”
“Wh-wh-what are you talking about?”
Just when Minato was at a loss for words, two figures suddenly appeared and stood in front of him.
“Making our grandson cry, you’re a failure as a coach!”
Minato couldn’t believe his eyes. He had seen these faces before.
“…Grandpa!? Grandma!?”
“We thought that this club must be an exploitative club, since they have club activities during the holidays, but it seems that we were right. Isn’t it important to spend time with your family and friends outside of club activities?”
“Grandpa! There were people who were against training during the holidays, but we were the ones who asked for it. That’s why only volunteers are participating.”
His grandfather, who was about to grab Masa-san, loosened his clenched fist. After understanding the situation, the grandparents turned to Minato.
“When we learned about your kyudo activities, we really wanted to see you face to face. Since we were against the marriage of your parents, we were too embarrassed to go see you, so we hid and watched you,” his grandfather said.
“We’re sorry for coming to see you so late. We haven’t seen you since the funeral. Your mother had been sickly ever since she was little, so we were worried about letting her live so far away. Because we were so stubborn, we never got to see our precious daughter and grandchild. We weren’t able to properly express our feelings. We can never get rid of our regrets, so this is how…” his grandmother said.
“…I’m the only one who survived… I wondered if Mom was in more pain than I was, or if she was scared, but I couldn’t breathe…”
When Minato pressed his hand against his left side, his grandmother gripped that hand and his other hand.
“What are you saying! There’s a song your mother used to sing to herself when she was a child. It goes like, When I cross that mountain, I will feel very peaceful and content. Your mother always loves your smile.”
Masa-san placed his hand on Minato’s back.
“Ui no okuyama kyou koete, asaki yume miji yohi mo sezu—that’s the ‘Iroha poem.’ (5) It talks about how when you cross the mountains, Miroku-sama will come and greet you.”
“Yes, that is also an interpretation. You seem to be a diligent person who studies hard. I’m relieved that there’s someone like you by Minato’s side. Please continue to take good care of him for a long time.”
“No, I should be thanking you.”
While still holding Minato’s hands, his grandmother exchanged a few words, then let go of them in reassurance.
“We’ll come visit again!” Minato saw his waving grandparents off.
Kaito and Seiya, who were looking for Minato and Masa-san because they were late in coming back, hid behind a tree.
“Seiya, you knew that Narumiya’s grandparents were secretly checking on him, didn’t you?”
“Oh, I knew. They visited us. That’s why I left it alone.”
“Good grief, you should have told me. If I had known, I wouldn’t have gotten worried.”
“Sorry, Kaito.”
Kaito stiffened at Seiya’s honest response.
Afterwards, the nosha was held. Nanao, who won the match, was the archer, and Minato served as the first kaizoe, and Kaito as the second. They wore peach, bamboo-green, and crimson kimonos respectively.
