I was tagged by @gingerteaonthetardis, ty abbey! ☺️
favorite movie trilogy of all time: Honestly I also have to say Lord of the Rings. I mean, I also can’t even think of anything else, but lotr would definitely beat anything else. I actually just finished a fellowship rewatch last night! What can I say, those movies are just perfect.
name of the main character in the last book you read/are currently reading: I’m in desperate need of a new book right now, but I just finished ‘I Kissed Alice’, which surprisingly, does not actually star an Alice! (Technically). There were two main characters - Rhodes and Iliana.
favorite color combination: hmmm that’s hard, I don’t really think about color combos? 🤔 I have to say I’m a big fan of anything involving teal as an accent.. like, brown and teal, black/grey and teal… so good… And personally I think crimson and gold is just always a classic win. Also, any kind of warm/sunset color palettes! I’m so weak for that. 🤌
most common craving: probably chocolate or any sweet candies, and also salty snacks, as far as what I end up hunting my pantry for the most. I’m very weak for any baked goods as well and will jump at any chance to make warm, gooey brownies or chocolate chip cookies!
favorite word: bro hell if I know.. probably not my favorite word (because how could you possibly chose???) but the first thing that popped into my head was ‘languid’. I love that word, it has such a nice mental image - especially bc it sounds like ‘liquid’ which idk, I just like a lot. And yet I always seem to have a hard time working it into my writing…
word count of the last writing piece you worked on: well, if we’re counting the notes I frantically jotted down last night to make sure I didn’t forget any bits of the scenes I had in my head, then 834 words 😂. (That one’s a small Izzy fic about him getting wounded but it’s slowly turning into a full on steddy hands fic against my will, please send help 😭). But! If we’re just focusing on like, actual full writing and not just half-written dialogue, then we have my other Izzy-centric WIP which is 1,964 words so far. Not bad at all by my standards! 😌 (That is, considering the longest thing I’ve even posted on AO3 was only 1,130 words).
current obsession: I mean… do I even need to say it😔😔….. Besides just my horrible little man though, I’m currently obsessed with practicing stylization in my art! Like, trying to figure out what shapes I can make people into to make everything more fun and dynamic, and how to distinguish characters from each other with those shapes. It’s very different from what I normally do, so it’s super fun to explore! Even if I don’t really know what I’m doing as of yet 😅
this was fun!! tagging (if you feel like it!): @lordoftherazzles @gxlden-switchblade (bestie I know you are writing some wild fic lately!) @iggy-hands @soliusss

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you for the tag @sparklyslug 🖤
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
4
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
222,566 (lol at that fic to word count ratio)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Almost entirely Stranger Things, though I have worked on some OFMD and Shadow and Bone (tv) stuff that never saw the light of day.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
I only have the 4 but by order of kudos most to least : we know where we're going any other way cabin fever swing for the fences
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! It sometimes takes me a little while, but I love comments so so much - they mean a whole lot and always completely make my day
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
None of mine have angsty endings, but I guess it would have to be we know where we're going based purely on the drama contained in the last chapter
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Definitely any other way, but swing for the fences will be up there too when it's finished
8. Do you get hate on fics?
It's never happened! Srsly thank fuck too cause I'd cry lol
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
You bet - it doesn't really fall into a specific type I guess, probably tends towards the romantic and soft? I try to make it realistic, with little things going wrong and laughter etc.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I've never written a crossover but I wouldn't be opposed - I think they're neat
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I hope not!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have not
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No but one of my best friends is my editor and she helps me so much with these fics it is insane, I seriously don't think any of them would have ever been fully finished much less posted if not for her
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
I mean it's probably gotta be Steddie based purely on my own ridiculous behaviour about them. They're just so fun to shake around. But I've also always really loved Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in all their lovely forms (except for that one time 😒 but we won't talk about that)
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
The Izzy/OC I started ages ago - rip
16. What are your writing strengths?
I feel pretty comfortable with dialogue and describing physicality in general - love zooming in on little moments and making them a big deal for no reason
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I am bad at big picture stuff; whether that be sticking to a planned length or just not adding a ton of extra little scenes that pop into my head as I'm writing. I think I have a tendency to muddy up my plot lines.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Gonna just repeat what @sparklyslug said here: I have no thoughts in particular. If it works in the fic and you've made sure your translation is right if you're not fluent in that language, hell yeah.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Sherlock Holmes (arthur conan doyle version babyyyy)
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Oh man I really don't know, I love them all in different ways! Probably just cause they're the most recent I'll say that I'm really happy with how cabin fever turned out but I think my fav might be swing for the fences cause it is just so so fun to write.

6. What fic has the happiest ending?
The Heart Of A Home ends with Magnus, Alec, Jace cuddles (malec with platonic Jalec)
7. Do you write crossovers?
I wrote Damaged, But Not Beyond Repair which features Raven Reyes from The 100 in a malec fic. That's the closest I've gotten to a crossover, but maybe someday I'll write more.
8. Have you received hate on ao3?
Yeah, a couple comments. Mostly on my darker fics that say "don't like don't read" but I think those commenters can't read that well so
9. Do you write smut?
Yup~
10. Have you had a fic get stolen?
Yeah, someone was posting stolen fics on Wattpad and included a couple of mine.
11. Have you had a fic get translated?
Nope! @soulless-baka should translate one to German just so I can say yes <3

Familial: Alec, Izzy, and Jace
14. What's a WIP you want to finish but never will?
I don't post WIPs, but I have a malec fake dating fic in the works that may or may not be finished one day as well as a canon divergent fic where Alec winds up an accidental King of Edom after killing Lilith and works together with Magnus who has been trapped in Edom by his father.
15. What are my writing strengths?
Uh... dialog? I guess? I don't know, if you've read my writing, you tell me~ I've been told I write sensitive topics well which is nice
16. What are my writing weaknesses?
I want to improve how I write settings, pacing, and general plotting. I'd like to make my writing prettier too.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages on ao3?
However someone wants to include different languages is good with me, but I do have a preference for including a translation somewhere because I don't want to google it
18. What's the first fandom you wrote for?
Supernatural. The fic has since been deleted because I wrote it forever ago.
19. What fandom/ship have you not written but want to?
I'm mostly into writing original stuff right now, but I'd like to write a fic from Yurio's perspective some day. I've written at least 1 fic for most of my favorite fandoms, including Yuri On Ice. I think it could be fun to try writing for a book fandom one day.
20. What's your fav fic you've written?
Uncommon Flavors which is a malec fic wherein Alec has narcolepsy and a service dog, Magnus runs a bakery, and some miscommunication and flirting happens.
Tagging @missyousofar @dicaculus @myulalie and anyone who sees this~

20 questions for fic writers
Thank you babe for the tag <3
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
I have 62 works posted on ao3 (although some are anonymous and some are not fics but original stuff).
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
131,372 words.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Many, lol. The fandom I have the most fics posted is Sherlock (BBC). The second is Good Omens (and also the fandom I have the most WIPs for). I have also posted fics for the MCU, Star Trek (TOS, AOS, TNG, DSC), the TAZ podcast, DC/Batman, OFMD and, most recently, X-Men.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
#1 in all statistics, by a wide margin of difference, is Gotham Online, my DC/Batman social media AU fic, with 3,033 kudos. Second, with 479 kudos is Epiphanies at dawn, my OFMD Izzy/Stede Steddyhands fic; I'm relaly proud of this one actually. Then there's Surprising and unexpected (Star Trek), then There's No Truth Like Home (Sherlock) and fifth is Seeking Knowledge (Good Omens).
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! I like replying to comments.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Um, none? I don't write much angst, and when I do it always has a happy ending. Probably the angstiest fic I wrote is In your precense I trust, my last Good Omens fic where Crowley has a shit day and seeks out Aziraphale for some comfort. But it doesn't have an angsty ending at all.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Literally all of them? Most of them have very soft endings because that's what I love.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nope. I think I got some weird comments a couple of times? But no. And if I did I deleted them and forgot about them lol.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I haven't posted any smut, yet. I have two (...three? Can't recall) smut WIPs, one OFMD that's almost finished and needs editing (although I haven't touched it in months lol) and one Good Omens one as well that is significantly more incomplete.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I don't? I have had a few ideas for crossovers, and I even started writing a couple, but none I've worked on in a while. The craziest one is a Good Omens/Los Simuladores (Argentina) crossover; I had the idead with @two-hands-toward-the-sun and they actually wrote a fic about it, every morning the same big and little words all spelling out desire. It's very good and you should read it.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope. Not to my knowledge at least, I hope not.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yeah! I translated a few of my own fics (from english to spanish and spanish to english) and I had several of my Sherlock fics translated to russian.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yup, Obsession is a Sherlock fic I co-wrote with @0therainbowmind0 during late 2019/early 2020.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Something you need to know about me: I am terribly indecisive. I don't have favourite anythings because I can never choose and my asnwers change constantly. So, at the moment and for the past couple years my favourite ship, or at elast the one I keep returning to, has been Good Omens' Aziraphale/Crowley. Although, at this very moment, as in, the day I'm writing this and for the past week or so, I have also been very much into X-Men's Charles/Erik.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Hard question! I don't like posting WIPs, so I almost always wait until I have completed a story before posting it. The only exception is Gotham Online. I would like to finish that fic sometime, although there's not much plotline, I would simply like to continue it because I have many ideas. One other fic I would like to finish but I am not certain I will is my "Heaven's Prayers Department" Good Omens WIP, where some angels in heaven hear Crowley's prayers through the millenia.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think probably writing dialogue is what I'm best at. I'm good at it, even though sometimes I may struggle to properly get a character's voice.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions, I really struggle with them in general. I'm bad at describing places, clothes, everything. Ambientation is not my thing.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
It's fine? I don't know; I don't do it. The only time I did was in my Good Omens' spanish pet names fic, which to be fair, I wrote originally in spanish (Los nombres del amor) and later translated to english (The names of love). In the translation I kept the pet names untranslated, as they were the entire point of the fic.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I don't remember if I ever actually wrote or just daydreamed and maybe, at most, wrote down a handful of ideas as a bulletpoint list, but if we count that then it was, embarrassingly enough, for the Spanish gamer youtubers fandom circa ~2016. But the first fandom I actually wrote for was Sherlock. Or maybe MCU? I don't remember which one I wrote for first but the first fic I ever posted was a Sherlock one.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Oh fuck. This is literally so hard to choose. I think my favourite Good Omens fic is the previously named In your precense I trust or Lavender Suits You, which I wrote for the Ineffable Butch Wives Week last year. Other favourites I really loved writing and also enjoy rereading are: Crush, a TAZ fic written for the Blupjeans Week 2021; Joanna McCoy's Week In Space, written for the Spones Reverse Big Bang 2020-21; my previously mentioned OFMD fic, Epiphanies at dawn; and my most recent fic, age with all its ailing brings blessings, I believe, which is an X-Men fic and the first part of the old men cherik series. The second part of the series is finish and already half edited, and I started writing the third (and probably final) part.
Honestly if anyone wants to do this, consider yourself tagged. It was very fun XD

brawlite's ao3 year in review
2022 was my ninth year publishing fic on ao3, which means that 2023 will be my 10th! anyway, this year i kind of flitted around between fandoms - some new to me, some old. ao3 tells me i published a grand total of 282,571 words, most of which were shared with toast—so that's probably closer to 60k for the 9 fics i published. i also started and abandoned approximately one million wips (too painful to count, tbh), but i do have plans to finish some of them.
anyway, at this strange trajectory, i have no idea what 2023 has in store, but i look forward to sharing it with u all.
(below the cut is a list of all the fics i published, with links & summaries)

5, 7, 8, 18, 36, 72 for the fanfic asks!
OKAY, this one took me a bit longer than the others to get to, but here we go!
5. How many wips do you have?
In terms of fanfic, honestly not that many! I have 2 fics that I fully intend on finishing, and a couple ideas stewing where I *might* write them, but don't really consider them wips. My non-fic wips are a lot more out of control, though, lol (I'm not sure I could assign a number if I tried) 7. Post a snippet from a wip.
-Ringing a bell- Come and get your angst! (You get a long excerpt because I couldn't decide where to break this up)
"But then, Edward doesn’t really resemble Edward these days, does he? He doesn’t even resemble Blackbeard. And if Ed himself is dead and gone, then it’s only fair to share the blame. Stede fucking Bonnet had lined up the shot, but Izzy had gone ahead and fired the bullet.
Still, you can’t fire a bullet without a gun, and Izzy can pinpoint the exact moment his world had cracked open and begun to bleed—When Bonnet, that useless fuck of a pirate, had pranced into Ed’s life and seduced him with all his wealth and finery and bullshit."
8. Post an out-of-context spoiler from a wip.
Pain, misery, and more pain, and maybe, MAYBE some comfort (hopefully)
18. Do you enjoy research? Which fic of yours required the most research?
Oh I LOVE it. I don't think research is entirely necessary for most fic writing, but I can't help myself -- I love learning about random topics and I like to be at least *kind of* accurate. I think my fic that required the most research so far is my Owl House fic, primarily because I ended up learning a lot about how to treat hypothermia.
36. What fic are you proudest of?
I think I'm proudest of my Good Omens one-shot, partially because it's one of the first fics I wrote on this side of adulthood. Writing it was wild because I was realizing in real-time that I could actually write fic! And people would read it! It also contains a lot of small lines that I really like.
72. What’s your favorite writing compliment you’ve gotten?
This is tricky because I often don't remember specific compliments (I do remember the people who delivered them and the *feeling* of getting the compliment). I would say largely, though, my favorite compliments tend to be the ones where people spiral over certain turns of phrase. I put a lot of effort into my word choice (part of why I'm a painfully slow fiction writer ha), so those kind of compliments always feel *really* good!

for the writing ask meme: 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 16, 17 <3
1) Who is your favorite character to write for and is this the character you find easiest to write for?
My favorite character to write for is actually probably Jack Rollins (although I haven’t written much with him as the POV character yet!). I just love writing him as somebody who’s always getting dragged into situations he wants absolutely nothing to do with, and I’ve always gotten a kick out of writing emotionally unintelligent characters who are forced to deal with extremely complex situations.
That being said, I think Bucky is actually the easiest character for me to write for - I’ve just written a ton from his POV at this point, and he’s the most “familiar”‘character to write in some ways.
2) What is your favorite fic of yours?
Oooh this one is tough, but I think imma go with No Good Deed, just because I really did love writing Rollins’ POV and I had the absolute best time gaming it out with @spintwinwb! I also, personally, have such a soft spot for mutual non-con, escalating misunderstandings, and inappropriately dark comedy, so this was basically me getting to indulge in all of my favorite tropes.
3) What fic of yours do you think is underrated?
Haha this is also difficult! I am not sure this one counts as underrated, because - frankly - I pretty much just wrote it for myself in a feverish 2am haze following a too-long study session at college, but a hollow space in reality is one of my old favorites of my stuff. There was almost zero editing involved, and it shows, and it’s basically me just mashing up Inception, TDKR, and Mad Max in a blender and shaking out 900 words of weirdness, but I have such a soft spot for it despite it never doing the big numbers
6) Do you outline your fics? If so, how?
I pretty much outline all my fics unless I’m planning on having them be less than 1k words or so. How detailed will kinda vary, but I’ll figure out generally what I want to happen in each scene, and then sometimes make notes if there’s a particular emotion I’ll want to include or something specific I’ll want to highlight. I don’t always end up following my initial outlines 100% though, sometimes as I’m writing I’ll decide to go in another direction, but usually the overall plot, at least, will stay the same.
8) Do you take inspiration from real life? If so how do you incorporate it into your fics?
I think to the same extent everyone does, like pull from my own emotional/physical experiences when I’m writing for ease of reference! Otherwise, I don’t really make a point to draw from real life, although I’m sure a degree of that is probably inevitable!
16) Do you have a method for getting characters to sound/feel in character?
Just rewatching their scenes!
17) Do you have any wips that you can tell us about? What are you most excited for in you wip?
Ooh I’ve got a couple, all in various stages of progress 😅 I’m not sure how many of these I’ll actually end up finishing, but I’d like to (ideally!) get most of them done before 2023! There’s a Pepper/Natasha fic circa Iron Man 2, a fic about young Rollins getting forced to be the Soldier’s handler (in this one the handler doesn’t really have much authority over the Soldier, and is mostly just acts as a chauffeur and weapon-picker-up), and a Calico Jack/Izzy fic set just before episode 8 (Calico Jack is Izzy’s biggest - and only - fan)

🎶🤩 and 🤲
🎶 - Yes! Generally I listen to music while I write (and while I do literally anything else, tbh). Lately, I’ve been listening to This Year by the Mountain Goats, because it’s where I took the title for my current WIP (stuck in second gear). But I also listen to a lot of indie mixes or to songs I think have the right vibe for what I’m writing. A frankly embarrassing amount of Crane Wives for a lot of the boat-themed media I write for. I also like to turn on like, chill beats if the lyrics are throwing me off my game. Sometimes lyrics are just... too many words while I’m trying to think of words.
🤩 - God, this is such a hard question. On the one hand, I really like to write for Izzy from OFMD and for Thomas from Black Sails (I’m having a great time in my forever WIP, haha), in part because they get less screen time and so it leaves me with more room to invent and extrapolate. But I also adore writing for Flint... I generally don’t write about/from the POV of characters that don’t interest me - probably an obvious statement.
I guess the closest I have to a real answer is that my favorite characters to write are one who are either well read or well spoken because even though they are harder to capture, they give you a lot of fun opportunity to play with allusions and word games. Even if I don’t always succeed, I do enjoy playing around with those things (and since this is just a hobby, I’d argue my fun in all this comes first, haha).
🤲 - So, here’s a snippet from the next chapter of stuck in second gear. This was in my notes as under the section “I love you, Ed, but you do have the shower PBR kinda energy. Which is remarkable for a man approaching 50.” As an aside, writing a modern!au is both freeing and terrifying. I feel like I can do so many more word crimes when I’m not restrained by historical pseudo-accuracy, haha.
Ed shuffles over to the fridge and opens the door to appraise the contents. Izzy would have normally done the shopping, but he seems to have neglected that duty the past week. There’s not much left except for the takeout leftovers that Ed has scattered across the shelves and a few beers tucked between the condiments.
Ed grabs a beer, opens it with one hand, and heads back up to the bathroom. He washes back a few ibuprofen with a swig of PBR and lets the shower heat up while he brushes his teeth. Then, he strips and steps under the water, nestling his beer amongst the shampoo and conditioner for easy access. He can’t believe he hadn’t thought of bringing beer into the shower until Jack had brought it up. Honestly, someone should patent this – it’s genius.
Which reminds Ed, he really should text Jack. Jack had wanted to see the boat. And besides, he’s a great friend. He probably knows exactly what to do about this Izzy divorce business.
Ed sticks one hand out of the shower to send a quick text.
want 2 c boat??
A minute later, while Ed is shampooing his hair and thinking about how they should really make a bigger shampoo bottle – he goes through this shit too fucking fast – his phone dings in response. Ed washes the suds off his hands and reaches out to tilt his phone enough to read the message.
fuk yea be there in 25
Twenty-five minutes in Jack time means at least an hour by anyone else’s watch and so Ed finishes his shower and wraps himself in a towel. He gives his body a quick pat dry and then uses the towel to tie his hair up on top of his head, walking around the house naked as he decides what to wear. Really, being able to walk around naked is at least fifty percent of the appeal of having a house, and not an apartment so close to their neighbors that Izzy will be up Ed’s ass every three days about “getting us kicked out for indecent exposure again.”
He loses track of time when he finds an old magazine left on top of the dresser and lays out on the bed to flip through it. Next thing he knows, he hears Jack honking in the driveway and yelling out the window for Ed to come down. Ed tosses the towel off his head, pulls his still wet hair into a messy bun, and grabs a pair of jeans off the floor. He hops into them as he pulls out an old t-shirt from the back of his closet.
Huh. That’s odd. Ed pulls at the shirt, trying to get the hems to meet, but the shirt keeps springing back to just above the waistband of his jeans. He looks in the mirror to see the way that the shirt clings to his shoulders, more than a bit too small for him. Must be Izzy’s, but it’s purple and color has always been more of Ed’s thing than Izzy’s, so he tosses on a pair of flipflops to complete the ensemble, contented to claim the shirt as his own.

Can I ask if there is anything percolating in the Suffer a Sea Change series? That "pre-ship" tag is haunting me.
I am also equally haunted by the I'm Not Ready for Whatever This Is series. The impending poly situations. help.
Yes, you absolutely can, thank you for asking, and yes, there is! The latter will be out well before the former, but both are very much in the works.
I am kind of a classic case of ADD “takes on too many fics” kinda writer. Right now my top priorities/fics I feel driven to write are:
My winter exchange fic for the Sprizzy server (currently untitled, about halfway done, will be posted third week of January come hell or high water)
The next Stizzy installment for I’m Not Ready for Whatever This Is, which is going to be titled "Add a Flourish" (I was hoping for this next part to plunge into the SteddyHands but Stede wasn’t done wallowing in angst. Almost done, will be posted second or fourth week of January depending on how progress on the exchange fic goes)
Finishing Fuck it Through as a Crew (draft of the chapter is done but needs some heavy editing, also January)
Final chapter of Paid with Sighs and Rubies (about half done, aiming for late January/early February)
Always another chapter of my “Batman becomes a cat” fic, whenever I have time
Past that, things get hazier. I really want to get back to my Marvel time travel fix-it but I’ve been a bit blocked on the next chapter. I have a T4T4T modern GentleScribed that I keep meaning to finish but have barely touched since Season 2 came out. The next chapter of Burning Like Embers, Falling Tender is actually about half done but every chapter of that thing is a monster, now, so it still has a lot of writing before it'll be ready to post.
Annddd yes, the sequel to Soaked to the Skin, which is titled Cut to the Bone and explores Izzy and Lucius settling into Stede's crew and figuring out what Lucius being polyam actually means for them, while Ed wrestles with having lost Stede and Izzy! I have about 35K written for it, but most of that was drafted in late 2022 and very early 2023. I haven't had the motivation to work seriously on it for a while, I'm afraid, but I do really want to get back to it.
To be honest, I have some insecurities about it being not as good as Soaked to the Skin—I don't want to follow my baby with something that'll disappoint readers! But I'm hoping once I clear the decks from some of my top numbered priorities above (assuming they don't immediately get replaced with new plot bunnies, lol), I'll find the energy to focus on it again. I've had some beta readers go through the current in-progress chapters recently and they have been giving me some more hype about it!
(Although if it's the Ed/Izzy pre-ship tag that's haunting you, that plot thread isn't going to pick back up until the third — and final? maybe? unless I turn in into a quartet? — installment for that series, tentatively titled Struck to the Heart. Except for how, you know, his devotion to Ed is always driving Izzy's character and motivations. But they're not going to be in the same zip code at any point during Cut to the Bone. I'm so, so sorry. )
And then finally, down here in my purgatory, I have my "I swear I haven't abandoned you" fics like Unmoored (next chapter started, at least?), Dining is Pageantry, my three Good Omens WIPs, the sequel to Learning at the Foot of One of the Greats, the next chapter of What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor (I swear I'm gonna finish that fic one day, I swear), Praying on the Height, and that Rizzy cannibalism fic I keep promising HopelessScribe I'll finish :D
And below that I have my graveyard fics that I haven't worked on in months but really do want to go back to one day—the DC/Slayerverse crossover, the insane Dragonriders of Pern OFMD AU, my winter piece (from last year, oy) for Dragonmuse's Leda House series, and all my poor abandoned SuperBat wips!

Writing Tag Game!
I was tagged by @ghostcat3000 💛
Tagging @bensschwartz, @hallo-catfish, @xiangyu, @probablymyalgic, & @johnisntevendead (but no pressure!)
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
275. How?!? (I write primarily short-ish one-shots, but like, still. How?!?)
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
462,072. That seems like both a lot and not much at all.
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1) California Never Felt Like Home To Me (Until I Had You On the Open Road)
(To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Peter Kavinsky/Lara Jean Song-Covey, 2.1K, Rated G): https://archiveofourown.org/works/15779202
It’s summer, and Peter invites Lara Jean onto his family’s vacation to San Francisco a week before they go. She pokes fun at him because it’s so last minute and he’s always forgetting about things until right before they’re about to happen, but then she finds out that he’d only just convinced his parents to let them go alone, and now it’s entirely different.
2) You Are the Best Thing (That’s Ever Been Mine)
(Atypical, Casey Gardner/Izzie Taylor, 5K, Rated T): https://archiveofourown.org/works/25397293
Tori22ferrante requested, “5 times Izzie refers to Casey as ‘her girl’ and 1 time Casey does it for her.”
3) Don't Need a Ring for My Finger, Just Need a Steady Hand to Hold
(Sense8, Kala Dandekar/Wolfgang Bogdanow/Rajan Rasal, 1K, Rated G): https://archiveofourown.org/works/18231296
It’s Wolfgang, observant through Kala’s eyes while he shaves in the bathroom upstairs, who finally urges her to ask Rajan what he’s thinking about. “Marriage,” he responds simply and almost immediately. Nonchalant, he sets down the paper like the word he’d just uttered doesn’t hold the intense amount of weight that it most certainly does.
4) The Morning After (Is Both the Hardest and the Sweetest Part)
(Sense8, Kala Dandekar/Wolfgang Bodganow/Rajan Rasal, 2K, Rated T): https://archiveofourown.org/works/15154799
Thinking of her love and her husband as being the “same” in any sense is strange, and looking towards the bed, seeing them lying close, breathing slow, is even stranger. Kala's stomach churns, both hunger and anxiety, and she wishes she was still asleep, oblivious and unaware of the mess she’s gotten herself into.
5) Give Me a Museum & I'll Fill It With Our Love
(The Good Place, Eleanor Shellstrop/Tahani Al-Jamil, 1.6K, Rated G): https://archiveofourown.org/works/14206125
“Seems chill, I’d bang him,” Eleanor says while staring up at a portrait of an eighteenth century, heavily bearded man. “Eleanor, please, I’m trying to educate you,” Tahani says, smoothing her dress and giving her a pointed look. Eleanor smiles up at her, bright and innocent, and it’s all softness underneath Tahani’s irritated facade when she meets the gaze of those blue eyes.
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Probably this canon-adjacent Wyndolls fic, It's Lonely Where You Are (Come Back Down; I Won't Tell Them Your Name) (https://archiveofourown.org/works/16163222)
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
I write so much fluff...but something about the softness of Even & Isak in Shimmery & Golden (https://archiveofourown.org/works/27531607) and Come Run Your Hands Through My Hair (Cause That's Why It's There) (https://archiveofourown.org/works/28786659) live rent free in my mind, as the kids say.
7. Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
I do! My Kind of Party is basically just horny crack treated seriously, and I had so much fun basically throwing all caution to the wind while writing it. (https://archiveofourown.org/works/18690400)
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yep.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
LOL yes. Clearly. Lots of kinds. Usually the kind that ends up hopelessly romantic or at least with the tiniest bit of feelings, no matter how much I’m trying to avoid that for the sake of angst or pure horniness.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of! If anyone ever sees that happen, please report it and let me know.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! The Morning After (Is Both the Hardest and the Sweetest Part) has been translated into Russian, which is so cool! Here’s the link to the original-- https://archiveofourown.org/works/15154799 -- and the translation: https://archiveofourown.org/works/15522618.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! @bensschwartz and I wrote a sweet, angsty little Iggymartin thing, I’ll Be Scared (So By the Time You Wake I’ll Be Brave): https://archiveofourown.org/works/32370229
13. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I hate to say it...but Second Curse, Worse Than the First (https://archiveofourown.org/works/13378377/chapters/30639954). The Wynonna Earp fandom has since moved on from the plot of season 2, and so have I. Also, most of the Wyndolls shippers have seemed to move on overall, which won’t stop me from still writing them, but probably just from writing this particular fic. And also, if I’m honest? I have no idea where this fic was even going to go. I did not plan it out at all
14. What are your writing strengths?
Diving into character’s feelings. Details. Feeling the scene deeply as I write it.
15. What are your writing weaknesses?
Diving too much into a character’s feelings so that I tell rather than show. Unintentional repetition. Feeling the scene so much that I don’t approach it from a writing standpoint, and then it gets muddled; I know what I’m trying to say, but everyone who reads it gets bits and pieces.
16. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I love to throw it into my Skam, Sense8, and BTS fics-- especially for Maxel!-- but I feel like I’m incorrect 99% of the time with my translations. Google Translate can only get me so far. I accept that fate.
17. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Sonny with a Chance, in like, 2009. I don’t have any of the fic anymore, but it existed.
18. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
It’s so hard to choose, but Drugs & Money (I Can Hear the Birds Sing) is a SKAM fic I was sure people were going to eat up, and it didn’t get as much attention as I expected. It’s a fun one for sure, and though I don’t know what more I could say in this AU, sometimes I consider jumping back into this verse for a minute just to see what else this version of Evak is up to. Definitely  more crime. https://archiveofourown.org/works/26006290

Hi, I've got a question out of nowhere! I was looking to re-read a story And When You Soar that was on my AO3 bookmark list and it's apparently not there anymore! I think it was your story? Can I ask what happened to it? If it's indeed the story I remember, I loved it!
Hi! Oh wow. It’s definitely my story! I’m smiling so big because you want to reread it. So…..as for what happened to it, I got a little overwhelmed with all my responsibilities in real life and how little time I had for writing. All my wips just felt like a heavy weight on my shoulders, because no matter how much I wanted to finish them I just didn’t think I’d ever have time. And I also felt so guilty about leaving them for so long without updates and letting readers down. So, I deleted all my wips from AO3 and vowed to only post them again when they were complete on my end (except for editing) and I could update them on a regular schedule. And When You Soar was supposed to be a relatively quick story, but then, as stories do, it took on a life of it’s own and there ended up being way more to it than I originally thought, so it got pulled too.
I’m actually in the middle of writing a long one-shot right now that’s fairly close to being sent to my beta. I don’t know what’s wrong with my writing brain right now, but I get huge bursts of inspiration for something new, then it fades, and rinse and repeat. Super unhelpful.
Now, the good news is, I’ve found myself at the very beginning of a period of being off work and quarantined at home because of this delightful pandemic we’re all experiencing, so I’m going to attack my wips with intensity and AWYS has a very good chance of getting finished soon and back up on ao3. Honestly, thank you so much for this ask because I wasn’t sure what wip from my list to work on after the one I’m finishing now, and you’ve made the decision easy for me. Thank you so much, lovely human! To hold you over until I post it again………
And When You Soar-Chapter 1
Alec ducked his head and stepped through the door and into the plane. He stopped when the elderly woman in front of him came to a standstill and looked around, transferring his suitcase to his other hand. He acknowledged the flight attendant standing to his left with his usual tight smile.
“Welcome aboard,” she greeted him, flashing him a bigger smile of her own.
“Thanks,” Alec answered her before his attention shifted to the open door just past her. A tall pilot standing just inside the flight cabin nodded at him and then turned his attention to who Alec assumed was his co-pilot. Always curious, Alec leaned to the side to see more of the other pilot, but his view into the small space was almost completely obstructed by the large man
“Sir,” the woman said to get his attention again.
He looked over at her and saw that she was motioning for him to move along into the cabin. He realized that the people in front of him had moved forward and he was holding up the line.
“Sorry,” he whispered, as if talking at a normal volume would cause further disturbance.
She just smiled at him sweetly again, and then turned her attention to whoever was behind him. Alec shifted his suitcase so that he could fit down the aisle, and focussed on finding his seat without taking out the tiny woman in front of him. He located his row near the back of the plane and saw that his seatmates hadn’t yet boarded, so he quickly stowed his bag in the overhead compartment and sat down in the aisle seat.
Normally, Alec loved being tall. He never needed a step stool, he had always been chosen first for basketball teams in high-school gym class, and he could see over everyone’s head in a crowd. It also made intimidating people fairly effortless, not that he would ever admit that out loud. Being tall was almost always a perk, but he found that flights were one of the few glaring exceptions.
He always sprang for first class when he had to be on a plane for more than a few hours, but his sister’s last-minute plans had him booking the only available seat on the only available flight that would fit into his demanding schedule. He barely had time to get a workout in and grab a quick shower before his Uber pulled up. He was feeling very lucky that he at least got an aisle seat, and even so, there simply wasn’t going to be a position that would make his legs happy. It was going to be a long night and his only hope would be to fall asleep, which was unlikely, as he found it especially difficult to do in crowded places.
He grabbed his phone and earbuds out of his backpack and put it under the seat in front of him, barely leaving enough room to squeeze his black Nikes in there. When he glanced back up, he could see that there was a young man and woman waiting patiently for him to get up so they could take the seats next to him. He quickly stood and moved to the side. The man eyed him up and down suspiciously and then quickly changed positions with who Alec could only assume was his girlfriend so that he would be sitting next to Alec instead of her. Alec barely contained an eye roll. Heterosexuals. He gave them plenty of space while they got settled and then gingerly lowered himself back into his seat, already regretting going so hard in the gym that morning as his thighs still protested from yesterday’s workout. He would feel it doubly tomorrow.
He went through the process of checking and returning messages on his phone. He handled a few work emails and then touched base with his family. He answered a text from Izzy.
 Did you make your flight?
Barely
That’s the spirit. See you soon. 😘
If by “soon” you mean in 9 hours, then yes, that.
Grouchy…..You got stuck in economy again didn’t you? Such a diva.
Next time you come up with some grand scheme, I’m going to need you to think of my legs.
Promise, but I’m sure you could use your powers of persuasion to get yourself into first class. 😎😍
You’re confusing me with you, again
Oh, Alec. Try not to have too much fun.😂 We’ll pick you up at the airport.
Hey, I know how to have fun.
And by “we”, do you mean…..
Simon and I. I wouldn’t bring mom or dad. I’m not that mean.☹️
I have plenty of scars that suggest otherwise, but I’ll see you in 9 short hours.
Love you, big brother
Love you, too.
The perky flight attendant had started her safety speech, which was thankfully straight to the point and not one of those lame ones trying to make everyone laugh. Alec fastened his seatbelt across his black joggers and logged into the airline’s Wi-Fi. He put his phone on airplane mode as soon as he was connected. He glanced over at his seatmates to see the man was huddled up next to his companion and they were chatting quietly and giggling. He didn’t think he had to worry about them trying to talk to him, but he stuck a wireless earbud in that ear anyway just to be sure. He scanned the rest of the passengers within view of him and tried to settle comfortably in his seat when he decided that everything was as it should be.
The pilot he had seen when he boarded the plane came out a few moments later and did the standard pre-flight announcement. Captain Garroway had a deep and booming voice, so Alec clearly heard the weather and their destination all the way from his seat in the back of the plane.
He busied himself with scrolling through his playlist to distract himself during take off. He wasn’t a nervous flyer, but the knowledge that nearly all plane crashes happened during ascent and descent kept him from really relaxing until they were fully up in the air. Being out of control in any situation went against every fiber of his being, and he just had to work through it. He spread his legs a little, pushing his knees all the way against the seatback in front of him, praying that the person wouldn’t want to recline their seat. He crossed his arms over his chest and closed his eyes.
The plane had just hit cruise height, the most nerve wracking part over, and he was listening to a conversation between a mother and child in front of him when his phone buzzed in his lap.
Alec swiped down his notifications and pulled his eyebrows together when he saw what app the push notification had come from. Of all times to get a message from someone on Grindr, this one had to be the weirdest. He hadn’t even had an account for twenty-four hours yet, only having downloaded it late the night before out of boredom. His sister had joked recently that he needed to “Meet someone on Grindr or something to let off some steam”, and despite everything in his being telling him he wouldn’t be happy with such a thing, he had done it anyway. He wasn’t exactly sure why he had listened to her, because he had no interest in hooking up with a random guy just because he was within so many feet of him. There was actually someone he had something really casual with, but it had been a while since he’d seen him. So, he could probably chalk this horrible lapse in decision making up to being frustrated and horny. Still, he had no intention of using the app, not really.
He thought about dismissing the message without reading it, almost laughing at the thought of having sex with some random stranger in the tiny plane bathroom, when it hit him that the message actually had to be from someone currently on the plane with him. That thought had him sitting up straighter and looking around him as inconspicuous as possible. He didn’t see anyone staring at him, but still, like the truly paranoid person he was, he turned down the brightness on his screen so the people around him would be less likely to see what he was doing. Hesitantly, he opened the message.
It was from someone called “CoyNotCryptic” and the icon wasn’t a person, but instead was an aerial photo of a city he didn’t recognize. Oh-kayyy, that wasn’t going to tell him anything. He looked around the cabin again and then read the message.
I see you’re on my flight.  Enjoy the ride to Rome.
Alec stared at the words in disbelief. What are the chances? He quickly tried to figure out who this mystery messenger could be. A fellow passenger? The app informed him that it was someone ninety feet away, which would have to be someone toward the front of the plane. A passenger in first class maybe? Alec looked up at the flight attendants suspiciously. Both were women and he didn’t see a third, but that didn’t necessarily mean there wasn’t another one there. First class sometimes had their own attendant. Thoroughly flustered, he turned off his screen and laid it face down in his lap again, still eyeing the people around him and the front of the cabin.
He made it an impressive five minutes before he unlocked his phone and pulled up the message thread. He clicked on the mystery person’s profile.
All he learned from that was that the guy was 3O ish years old, 5’11”, 175lbs, Bi, and Single. Seemed intriguing enough, but a picture definitely would have been extremely helpful. Fucking Grindr. This was why he didn’t want to mess with it in the first place. He wasn’t going to answer it. Absolutely not. What would he even say? What if the person was a total creep and it was a disaster for the entire eight-hour flight?
Just a few minutes later, bored and antsy, he decided that it was going to bother him if he didn’t at least find out who it was. Oh, what the hell , he thought, and typed out a message.
The chances of this happening have to be a million to one, right?
He tapped his foot nervously while he waited the fifteen seconds for an answer to come.
I’m not privy to the exact statistics, but it doesn’t happen very often, in my professional experience. Does this mean you’re one in a million?
Alec swallowed a laugh. The wording of the message made him feel more like it was someone working on the flight. That was probably less risky than a random passenger. More than a little intrigued, he typed a reply.
By that logic, you would be one in a million, also.
Oh, I definitely am.
How self-aware of you.
Self-aware and humble.
And….working right now??
Yes, although it doesn’t feel like work at the moment.
Because I’m distracting you?
Don’t get ahead of yourself.  It could be the 40-ton jet I’m flying. -MB
Alec nearly dropped his damn phone and he was ninety percent sure he said, “No way,” out loud instead of in his head. The pilot!! The pilot was messaging him on Grindr. What the actual hell had Izzy gotten him into?! He had the passing thought that maybe it was somebody else on the plane fucking with him, and he looked around for about the tenth time. And MB? Most definitely not the initials of Garroway, the pilot he saw before. Must’ve been the pilot he hadn’t been able to get a good look at when he boarded.
He didn’t have time to go too far down that rabbit hole of thought, because just then a voice filled the cabin. This one was very different than Captain Garroway’s and it got Alec’s full attention, to say the least.
“Good evening, lovely passengers, this is Captain Bane speaking.”
This voice sent a shiver down his spine and made every nerve ending wake up and take notice. It was a voice of pure silk that made Alec think of skin on skin, of dark passionate nights, of hushed whispers between sloppy kisses.
He was absolutely reeling at the realization that “MB” from Grindr was also Captain Bane, the pilot of this airplane, a man whose voice alone stimulated every cell in Alec’s body. He was thoroughly fucked for the duration of this flight and he couldn’t even find it in himself to be mad about it.
“We are now cruising along at an altitude of 30,000 feet. You may use any larger electronic devices you have at this time, on airplane mode, of course. I’m very good at what I do, but I’d prefer a smooth and easy ride tonight.”
Alec pursed his lips to contain his disbelieving laugh, his eyes wide.
“Please also feel free to take your seatbelt off if you need to move around the cabin, but be sure to put it back on anytime you’re in your seat. This is just a precaution in case of unexpected turbulence, or in the event I jerk my stick a little too hard.”
The passengers around him chuckled at the joke, but Alec thought that there was no possible way in hell any of them could be as affected by those words as he was. This was an unbelievable turn of events.
“My darling flight attendants will be doing drink service soon, and I’d like to ask you to be patient and enjoy whatever quenches your thirst. Please exercise self-control, though, as this is a long flight for all of us. Also, just a reminder that any long arms or long legs that are taking up aisle space, are most definitely at risk of being taken out by Clary and her cart, and need to be tucked safely in your seat. Thank you very much and enjoy the ride to Rome.”
This man. Holy. Fucking. Shit. He needed a drink from Clary and her cart ASAP.
He stared at his phone and that last message. It was clearly his move now, and considering how buzzed he was from the announcements alone, he wanted to make it a good one. He decided he very much wanted to play this game.
Aren’t there rules about texting and flying?
You are in very capable hands. I wasn’t joking when I said I’m good at what I do.
In all seriousness though, my co-pilot is doing all the heavy lifting at the moment, but if this makes you nervous, I’ll stop. I like to keep my customers happy.
Don’t stop.
I’m not worried.
Good. Tell me something?
Ask away.
What takes you to Rome?
My little sister’s impromptu wedding.
Scandalous. Have you met her other half?
Oh, yeah. They’ve been together for a while. The engagement isn’t that surprising, and, really, the quick wedding isn’t either if you know my family. She’s avoiding a lot of drama. I can’t really blame her.
Ah, family drama, ever delightful.
Unfortunately there’s no shortage of it with mine.
How long are you staying in Rome for the wedding?
Just a few days.
It’s an absolutely beautiful city. I can make some recommendations if you’d like……
That would be great.
Perky red rolled up to him with her cart, pulling his focus away from the conversation. He reluctantly placed the phone face down on his tray and tried to not look impatient as he got his wallet with his card out of his bag. She asked the couple next to him what they wanted, and Alec dutifully passed a soda and a red wine over. She ignored his debit card and poured a whiskey on the rocks, probably the most expensive they had on board, and handed it over to him. His confusion must have shown on his face because she winked at him and pointed to the front of the plane. It took a couple seconds for him to get it and then he glanced to his side to be sure the people next to him weren’t paying attention.
“Oh, uh, thanks,“ he whispered, and immediately felt like a moron.
“No problem. If you need anything else at all, just let me know. I’ll be back around for meal orders in just a little bit.”
Alec took a big sip of his drink. It was easily twice the size of the drinks you normally received on a plane and he felt a little guilty that he hadn’t even paid for it. He resisted the urge to look around and see if anyone had noticed his special treatment.
He checked his phone as soon as he felt relaxed from the warmth that had burned its way down his chest. There were no new messages, but he decided that sending him a drink was a pretty loud and clear message of its own and he started typing.
So, now you are flying a plane, texting, AND buying me a drink?! Show off.
Is that a thank you?
Of course. How did you even know where I was sitting?
Well, you see, there are these things called ‘Flight Manifests’ and pilots receive one for every flight.  Although I must admit I’ve never found one quite as useful as I do now.
By the way, who uses their real name for a Grindr profile??
People who want their pilots to send them free booze.
Ah. Well, your grand scheme is working out quite nicely then, I’d say.
Seriously though, thank you for the drink.
You’re most welcome, Alexander. (So useful, that manifest)
Nobody calls me that except for my mother when she’s angry with me.
Would you rather I not?
No….you can.
Good, because I’m fond of it.
Speaking of things I’m fond of, Clary tells me that your "longest legs ever” have no business at all being in coach.
Ah, well, you can blame my sister and her last minute plans for that.
Wait, do you have everyone spying on me?!
Not everyone, just Clary, I suppose. Though, to be fair, she mentioned your legs before I had her bring you a drink.  Seems “tall, dark, and handsome” appeals to all genders.
I’m going to need more alcohol if you’re going to keep saying things like that.
I’ll let Clary know the gorgeous man with mile long legs in C36 needs another drink soon.
I’m actually blushing.
I’d give my Louis luggage to see that for myself.
I don’t do selfies.
Really? Not even for the man who tried to get you a seat in First class?
It was all booked. I checked.
Yes, it is. But I tried to offer someone top shelf alcohol for the duration of the flight to switch with you.
YOU DIDN’T. Please tell me you didn’t.
Doesn’t matter. It didn’t work anyway. Please pass my apologies onto your legs.
No.
No?
No. If you have a message for my legs, you’ll have to deliver it yourself.
Do you really think it’s wise to cause a rise in the heart rate of the pilot who is flying your plane?
My bad. Pass my apologies onto your heart?
If I have to deliver messages in person, then you do as well.
Can you put the pedal to the floor? Get us on the ground any faster?
Do you know anything at all about airplanes?
No, but you could teach me.
With pleasure.
Lkkdfskhdkhsdfkhd.
Did he really send a keysmash? He did. He did that, as eloquent as ever. Slightly mortified, he waited to be teased for it. When no message came through, he checked his Wi-Fi connection, then his watch, and finally scrolled through his playlist and chose some music, trying to busy himself with something other than shamelessly flirting with the man currently keeping them alive way above the surface of the earth. He was probably very busy at the moment and Alec had to get a grip, especially since they were only an hour and a half into the flight.
By the time the dinner cart went through an hour later, Alec had returned a few more emails, done his budget for the month, organized all the photos in his gallery, and archived all the files on his phone that he didn’t need anymore. He also might have checked Grindr for new messages about twenty times, so he was more than a little ready for that second drink.
This time the other attendant came through, the one with the darker skin and curly hair. She was just as helpful and nice as Clary, but much less hyper, and Alec found that she had a way about her that he liked. With a knowing smile she served him up the same drink as before. She didn’t even try to tell him where it came from, which he appreciated, because at this point he was more than a little self conscious that the entire staff seemed to know the pilot was sending him things.
She took his dinner order and returned twenty minutes later with what could only amount to two standard airline meals and yet another glass of amber liquid. This one was smaller and accompanied by a bottle of water. He didn’t miss how she took his credit card and made herself look busy, before handing it back without actually swiping it. He gave her a genuine smile, very much appreciating her discretion and she patted his shoulder as she went by.
He usually didn’t like to be touched by people, let alone strangers, reserving his physical affection for his family alone. Maybe it was the alcohol warming his veins or the fact that he was currently being lavished with gifts, but he found that the small touch made him happy.
Eventually, he was relaxed enough that he felt like he may actually be able to sleep, but he still declined a pillow and blanket when they came through passing them out to everyone. There was no way he was going to be able to get that comfortable around this many strangers. He made a quick trip to the restroom and stopped in the aisle to stretch his legs and torso as much as he could in the tight space, before regrettably sliding back into his seat. He knocked back the last bit of his drink and followed it with the water, before sliding his tray back up and settling in. His phone buzzed on his leg.
 How was dinner?
Pretty good, actually. I think I owe you a few hundred dollars at this point.
Nonsense, it was my pleasure.
Thank you.
Is it sad that this is probably better than any date I’ve ever had?
That’s only because you haven’t been on a proper date with me ; )
Or because I’m bad at the whole dating thing. (Did you just winky face me?)
I think, given the right company, you’d do better than you think. (Yes, yes I did.)
Hah. A high compliment.
How about this for a compliment…….You really need to warn my staff before you go stretching in the aisle, again. Nobody benefits from a passed out crew.
Who told you about that?
Oh, just a little conversation between Clary and Maia.
Ugh.
I like Maia.
AND DON’T YOU HAVE A PLANE TO FLY?!
Shhhhhhhhh. I’m a professional, remember?
And I figured you would. She likes you, too.
Nobody likes me.
That’s very much not true. I happen to have it on good authority that just a small little sliver of your stomach can cause an impressive stir.
Please stop.
Are you blushing again?
I’m not sending you a selfie.
What if I pout?
Don’t do that. I’ll be forced to take one and then I’ll die of embarrassment. Nobody needs that.
*Sighs* I rather like you living, so I’ll give you a pass this time.
So generous.
You have no idea how generous I can be.
You can’t just keep saying things like that to me.
Why not? I’m just trying to give you “sweet dreams” material.
That might be the cheesiest thing I’ve ever heard.
Did it make you smile?
Maybe……
Yes.
Good. Regrettably, I have to go do the heavy lifting now. I’ll leave you to sleep.
Sleep. Sure. Easy. No problem.
Goodnight, Alexander.
Surprisingly, sleep came easier than he ever could have imagined it would, given the situation, which made him thankful for the food, booze, and the exhaustion that came with being up for almost twenty-four hours straight. He drifted off replaying the messages from Captain Bane in his head over and over and a relaxed smile on his face.
Alec woke with a start when the man in his row slid their window shade all the way up. He squinted against the bright sun, a clear indication that he slept longer than just a few hours. He rubbed his eyes with the heels of his hands and tried to blink the sleep from them. When he looked around he saw that a few people were still sleeping, but most were awake and talking quietly, with various drinks and snacks. It seemed he had slept through the beverage cart and probably some announcements, and he imagined that they had to be pretty close to landing in Rome.
He hit his knee on something and looked down to see that someone had lowered his tray and placed a lidded cup of coffee, a bottle of water and a blueberry muffin on it. That’s when it all came back to him. He scrambled around in his lap to find his phone, dropping it on the floor in his haste. He leaned down in the tight space to get it and hit his head on the seatback in front of him. “Shit!”
He glanced at his seatmates and said a quick, “Sorry,” for cursing and causing a ruckus, but didn’t pay attention to them long enough to see their reactions. He had much better things to do.
He managed to fish his phone off the floor and quickly straightened, sliding down his notifications with impressive speed and selecting the one he wanted.
Good morning, Sleeping Beauty.  If you need anything else, let me know.
Alec grinned and took a big gulp of his coffee before replying. He needed to wake up fast.
You are a gift, you know that?
Does that mean you’re going to eagerly unwrap me?
It’s too early for sentences like that.
It’s never too early for sentences like that.
How long until we land?
An hour and seventeen minutes.
Aren’t you getting tired?
I’m used to it, darling. Don’t worry about me.
Darling. He actively tried to keep a stupid smile from taking over his face. An hour. An hour until he exited this plane…..through the front of the plane. The front of the plane where this man currently was. Fuck. He needed a lot more coffee, a toothbrush, and a mirror STAT. He looked down at his crumpled t-shirt and jogging pants and swore under his breath. Truthfully, Alec wasn’t even sure he would be seeing him in person when they landed. He hadn’t seen him when they boarded, and so maybe it would be a repeat of that. That thought was too disappointing for him though, so he pushed it away and set about righting himself, just in case.
He drank his coffee down as quickly as he could without burning his mouth. Then he wrapped his muffin up in the package and put it in his backpack, knowing there was no way his nervous early morning stomach would tolerate it. He grabbed his toiletry bag and rushed to the bathroom before the imminent announcement that they had to stay in their seats.
Once he was folded in the cramped space, he brushed his teeth and thanked God for his recent haircut in preparation for the wedding. He spent a few minutes mussing his hair up with his fingers and a bit of water before deciding it was about as good as it was going to get. He ran his hand over his face and decided the scruff there wasn’t too bad, not bad enough to shave in an airplane bathroom, at least.
He started to stretch and then abruptly stopped, self-conscious that people would notice and he’d be the subject of mile-high gossip once again. He returned to his seat feeling a bit more human and a lot more nervous.
Clary came walking down the aisle with purpose, smiled way too brightly at him for 7 a.m. and handed him a folded up slip of paper. He hesitantly took it with a polite, “Thanks,” and immediately opened it and read the elegant script.
Meet me up front, if you want , after everyone else has deplaned.
~M.
If you want. He wasn’t sure he had ever wanted anything so much in his life.
Captain Garroway came over the intercom to let them know they were beginning their descent and Alec didn’t comprehend any of it. He put his seatbelt on when others around him did and  tried to stop bouncing his leg nervously. Maybe he had a little too much coffee.
Ten minutes later they landed in Rome without incident, and Alec unbuckled his seatbelt and wiped his sweaty palms on his pants. Why the hell was he so nervous? He watched as the other passengers gathered their belongings and exited at an agonizingly slow pace. Twice he got up and helped someone get a bag out of the compartment to hurry the process along. He tried really fucking hard to not compare the man across from him to a sloth, like a total asshole. Finally, when it got to his row he stood up and let the man and woman go by him.
Once they had their stuff gathered, the woman unexpectedly turned to Alec and said, “I just have to know, are you some kind of celebrity or something?”
Alec balked.
The man with her looked shocked as he nudged her. “Jules!”
She shrugged. “What? It’s kind of obvious.” She turned back to Alec. “Which movies are you in?”
Alec huffed out a laugh, “What? No…”
He was relieved when her boyfriend tugged her along even if he was kind of amused at the last disbelieving look she shot him.
The last few rows went by without any more accusations of stardom, which Alec was very grateful for, and then Clary passed by him last, with a wink and a little wave. He groaned out loud and didn’t even feel bad for it.
There was movement at the front of the plane from the crew and he forced himself to not focus on any of it, but instead he pulled his suitcase out of the overhead bin and threw his backpack over his shoulder. He started walking.
It all became too real when he saw Clary and Maia exit the plane behind the passengers. That wasn’t normal, was it? That definitely wasn’t normal. Jesus Christ, his heart was going to beat out of his chest. He got to first class and the other pilot, Garroway, was standing there in front of the cockpit door, his bag in hand. He shot Alec a smug, crooked smile and left the plane without a word.
And then there he stood.
There he stood looking way more beautiful than anyone who had been working all night had any right to. His eyes were bright and kohl-rimmed, his features strong and beautiful even as he nervously rubbed the fingers of his left hand together. He really was a kind of perfect that Alec hadn’t even realized existed. He wanted to devour him.
Alec watched, a little stunned, as he stepped forward. Then, he tilted his head up in a challenge and parted his lips, and that was all it took.
Alec abandoned his luggage right there in the aisle and went to him. He reached out with both hands, pressing one hand to his hip and grabbing his shirt with the other, pulling him into him. He kissed him hard, already drowning in the scent of him, the feel of him.
They started stumbling backward, and Alec realized that he was throwing his weight around too much, but fucking hell, he couldn’t help it. He couldn’t even think as he pressed their lips together over and over. He wanted it hard and fast, soft and slow, any and every way he could have him.
They stumbled through the door and into the back of the captain’s chair with an “oomph” and Alec opened his eyes briefly to drink him in.
“Alec,” he said, his breath hot on Alec’s lips, eyes still closed.
“Magnus,” Alec said, stepping into him even more, closing the tiniest bit of space that was left between them. “Fuck, I missed you.”
Magnus opened his eyes and smiled at him. “Yes, I can feel that,” he said, rolling his hips against Alec’s.
“You haven’t felt anything yet,” Alec said, his voice gruff.
Magnus slid a hand between them, “Oh, this isn’t just anything,” he said, rubbing fingers down Alec’s length through his pants. He curled them under the waistband and tugged, causing Alec to go from half-hard to fully erect in no time flat. “I like these pants…….a lot.”
Alec rubbed circles on Magnus’ ribcage with his thumb to distract himself so he could manage to speak a coherent sentence. “They’re perfect for long flights.”
He nearly whimpered when Magnus retracted his hand, but somehow still managed to narrow his eyes at him. “Speaking of long flights,” he said, “I’m supposed to be mad at you.”
Magnus smiled at him. “Oh, really? Whatever did I do?”
At that moment he realized how much he had missed that. His smile, his cunning wit, the elegance with which he spoke, his humor. All of it. He had missed all of Magnus. Desperately. He couldn’t believe he even considered the notion that anyone he met on a hookup app would be enough.
He stepped back a little bit, trying to be serious, but he didn’t remove his hands from Magnus’ waist, because he wasn’t planning on going far, maybe ever. “Well, you were in the city where I live and you didn’t even call me,” he accused, trying not to sound too desperate and probably failing miserably.
Magnus’ eyes twinkled with mischief, which should have prepared Alec for what came next, but before he knew it Magnus had changed their positions, and Alec was being pushed back against the chair, with Magnus pressing up against him, chest to hip. He leaned in and whispered in Alec’s ear, “Mmmmmm, well, if you needed me to dick you down, all you had to do was say something.” He nibbled gently at his earlobe and Alec almost forgot how to move air.
Fucking hell, if that didn’t make him damn near want to beg. “This is me saying something.”
Magnus kissed his neck ever so lightly, which sent shivers all the way down his body. “Hmmmm, what exactly are you saying, darling?”
“Magnus,” he said, exasperated and damn near floating with desire. Or lack of oxygen. Probably both.
“Alexander,” he practically purred back.
That was the first time Alec had ever heard him say his full name and he hoped it wasn’t even close to the last time. He actually fucking whimpered, and that was when he decided this wasn’t the time to be stubborn. “I need you to dick me down,” he admitted, snaking a hand up and grabbing Magnus’ hair. He pulled his head back and away from his neck to get back some control, instead kissing him deeply, sliding his tongue into his mouth and languidly tasting him.
Magnus moaned into his mouth and returned the kiss with equal intensity, before pulling away to answer him, grinding their hips together once more for good measure.
“With pleasure, if you promise to put that beautiful mouth of yours to good use.”
Alec’s whole body was singing at that promise. “Deal.” He looked around, thinking of logistics for all the things they were about to do, and then he was snapped back into the reality of exactly where they were.
“You’re a pilot,” he said, matter of fact, even if a little breathless.
“I am.” Magnus smiled. “Are you impressed?”
“Very, but what else is new?” Alec answered.
Magnus laughed, “I have to admit this is turning out most favorable for me as well.”
Alec looked around, “How long before you have to fly out again?”
Magnus said, “A couple of days…ish.”
“Ish?” Alec asked.
“That’s what I said.”
“Can you come to my hotel later?” Alec asked.
Magnus bit his bottom lip, then grinned. “You aren’t even a little tempted to do it right here, Alec? It is a Cock-pit, after all. It’s right there in the name,” he whispered.
Alec smiled, “Wow.” Honestly, fuck him for being so sexy while delivering such outrageous lines.
Magnus laughed deeply, and Alec ran a large hand down his chest and pulled his shirt down to kiss what he could of his collar bone. “Believe me, I’m very, very tempted, but I want to get you completely naked, lay you out on a bed, and take my time with you. I’ve had enough of cramped spaces for a while.”
“How could I possibly argue with that logic?” Magnus asked.
“You can’t,” Alec said.
“Text me your hotel information and give me a couple of hours?” Magnus asked.
The “couple of hours” part had him rethinking the whole “fucking in the cockpit of this plane” business, but he pushed away from Magnus with Herculean effort and placed one last and lingering kiss to his lips.
Alec forced himself to go back into the plane to collect his belongings, feeling Magnus’ eyes on him the whole way. When he passed by him again, Magnus was leaning against the door, a knowing smirk on his face.
Alec gestured to Magnus’ uniform. “Are you going to be wearing this when you stop by?” He couldn’t resist asking.
Magnus’ eyes crinkled with his smile. “Ooh, does someone have a kink?”
“Says the man who’s obsessed with my legs,” he countered, grinning back.
Magnus laughed, and Alec thought that it might very well be the most beautiful sound he’d ever heard. “Get out of my airplane, Alexander.”

2, 14, 20, 22, 23, 27, 30, 44 ♥ (you don't have to answer all of them but i'd love to hear abt all of them!!)
Thank you so much for these Maggie! This’ll be a little much so answers under the cut.
2) Favorite Part of Writing: Writing can be anything. It can be exploring or creating a brand new world. It can be super silly or super serious. It can be exorcising your demons or exploring things you never even knew about yourself. It’s almost always a learning experience in some way.
14) What’s the most research you ever put into a book? Hmm…I don’t often write things that are super far outside of my wheelhouse that involve research to be honest. The first thing that comes to mind is that I did do a bit of reading outside of what I already knew for One Month, just to make sure that I was treating the subject matter carefully there.
20) Post a snippet of a WIP you’re working on. (This is a piece of a scene from this soulmate AU that I hope to continue someday)
More surprising to Riley is the presence of the elder Smackles. She isn’t aware of Farkle becoming particularly close or involved with anyone in the Smackle family other than Izzy, and yet they’re in the audience. Throughout the ceremony, Riley repeatedly catches Smackle’s mom leaning over to have some sort of conversation with Mrs. Minkus.
The mystery of it all is a welcome little distraction from Riley’s worries about what happens to a group of friends in turmoil when they get thrown into the much bigger world of high school. At least it is until the rooftop party her parents are hosting after the ceremony, where the friends are all gathered to one side and Riley gets a chance to ask what’s going on.
“My parents feel that there is a lot to discuss with the Minkuses regarding boundaries and future plans and incorporating our families considering our circumstances, and they didn’t want to waste time in doing so.” Smackle states matter-of-factly in response to Riley’s question, ignoring Farkle’s own open mouth and nervous expression.
Lucas lifts his eyebrows. “Your…circumstances?” he prompts.
“Farkle and I received our romantic soulmarks last night.” Smackle pushes the sleeve of her cardigan up, revealing the shimmering golden text winding down her forearm. “We’re a match.” She reaches over to Farkle to do the same with his robe and shirtsleeve, but Farkle pulls away.
“Smackle, we talked about this.”
Riley frowns. She knows some people think soulmarks are a private thing that should only be seen by your soulmates and perhaps your doctor, but she’s fairly certain that Farkle has never been one of them. So why does he look so upset that Smackle is being open and excited about their match? Is he not happy that she’s his soulmate?
“Yes, and I disagreed with your assessment of the situation.” Smackle says. “Riley, Maya, and Lucas may not be as smart as me, or even you, but that doesn’t mean they’re incapable of recognizing that our discovery and happiness has no connection to their own struggles in understanding their feelings and cosmic attachments to each other.”
Zay lets out a low whistle, and takes a small step back from the group.
22) How many drafts do you need until you’re satisfied and a project is ultimately done for you? This is kind of hard for me to answer. I pretty much have to write my stories in chronological order to work, and I’m awful at calling a scene finished and moving on when I don’t feel good about it (see: why it’s taking me for-fucking-ever to update Clams) but I also don’t really write versions that I horde and edit that I would consider to be ‘drafts’. I tend to not write anything down until it sounds very close to correct in my head, and then give everything a good edit/rewrite at the very end.
23) Single or multi POV, and why? The longer a story is, the more I tend to lean towards multi POV because whenever I just pick a character and try to run with them for the whole story, I inevitably run into a scene that would be so much better and make so much more sense if it was in a different character’s POV. So rather than have a really random jump for one scene or have that scene not jump POV but be subpar, I’d rather have there be established switches throughout the whole thing.
27) Do you share rough drafts or do you wait until it’s all polished? If I’m feeling super confident I might not share until publishing time, but most of the time I want feedback from one or two trusted folks to help me suss out any major issues.
30) Favorite Line You’ve Ever Written: I’ll get back to you on this one…? I can’t think of anything I’ve written that has just felt brilliant and unforgettable and stuck in my head like that.
44) Best piece of feedback you’ve ever gotten: Not a clue how to answer this one tbh. I know I’ve seen some lovely things and gotten some lovely bits of wisdom from people but I’m blanking.
Ask the author :)

Tumblr media
This month we’re showcasing an author in the fandom who has written popular works such as Fall Without Wings and Celebrity!Magnus AU. Lu is on ao3 as vulturemonem and on tumblr as @notcrypticbutcoy, and we’d like to thank her once again for taking part in the OML author showcase!
1) When did you start writing fics? Tell us a little of your journey as a fic writer.
WELL. The first fandom I was ever a part of was the HP fandom, a solid 7+ years ago now, and I found my feet in this tiny little niche part of it in the most obscure place. That was where I began, where I learnt about what fanfiction was, and it was honestly a journey from there. I’ve been part of some very questionable fandoms and writing communities (if you want the details you’ll have to hit me up lol). I found the TMI fandom in maybe 2012? It was right before the CoB film came out, and I’d been totally obsessed with the books, because there were actual LGBT+ characters??? Like what?? (Alec and Magnus were the first gay/bi characters I’d ever seen in a YA book. I was enamoured immediately. Forgive me.) And then the show came out, and was everything I’d hoped for and so much more, and the rest is history, as they say!
2) What fic of yours are you most proud of and why?
The obvious answer here is to say Fall Without Wings, which has been more successful than I could ever have hoped for. I’ve put my heart and soul into that fic, and seeing other people loving it honestly means the world to me. The other fic I’d say I’m really proud of is the fic I wrote for Malec Week 2016, Day 3: AU Settings Day. You know when you sit down and write, and everything just spurts out and you read over it and you’re like, damn, did I actually write this?  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ That fic in a nutshell. I don’t know where it came from.
3) Who is your favorite character to write and why? Which character do you find the most challenging to write?
Magnus and Alec are definitely my favourite characters to write, but for entirely conflicting reasons. Alec, because I relate to Alec on pretty much every level, and so I find him very easy to write, and it comes naturally, most of the time. And Magnus because he’s also, to answer the second part of the question, such a challenging character to get right. He’s centuries old, there are a million facets to his character, and there are so many things to consider when writing him. He’s experienced more than I could possibly imagine. He’s also in my top 5 favourite characters in anything, ever, so I’m especially driven to do him justice!
Having said that, though, I think the hardest characters to write are those we’ve got less source material for, because I’m never totally sure whether I’ve got their characterisation right. Also, Clary, because she frequently frustrates me in canon, so I often find myself writing her a little differently in my fics. (Admittedly, she’s annoyed me less as the show has gone on. I have high hopes for season 3!)
4) What is the hardest part about being a fic author? The easiest?
Honestly, I think there are lots of hard things about being a fic author. One of the hardest things imo isn’t unique to fic writing, but is probably true of writing in general. When you put everything into writing something that you care about, it can be really hard to see it get torn down by hate comments - even just a couple. Consciously, you know that people who come into your inbox on anon spouting bullshit are just cowards, and that you shouldn’t take their words to heart, but sometimes people manage to hit you where it hurts. Some hate comments are just plain hilarious, but some of them can run around in your mind for a while.
The other hard thing is staring at your WIP wondering why the hell you can’t just write this damn thing already.
The easiest thing is definitely generating ideas! I get far too many to ever write! It’s hard to finish a fic, and it’s hard to stick to an update schedule, but it’s much too easy to come up with the ideas!
5) What inspires you? Where do you find your muse?
Literally everything and anything. Songs are often a big inspiration to me, or random little things I see on TV, or chatting to other people in fandoms about headcanons or such. And even just life anecdotes.
I’m a bit of a biology nerd, so I always think it’s really interesting to read about where creativity actually comes from. There’s science behind why I always get my best ideas in the shower or walking to the tube station on my morning commute – Google “brain idling” and have a read, if you’re interested!
6) Do you write original content as well as fic?
Absolutely! I haven’t shared any of it online, but I do, yes. Recently, I’ve had my free time slashed in half, so I’ve had to prioritise a little, but I do still write original things when I get the opportunity. At some point, when the time feels right and I’m satisfied with what I’ve written, I’d love to get something published, but I’m not in a hurry at the moment. My life needs to settle down a little bit first, but watch this space ;)
7) Do you have a favorite fic from another author?
Several!
- and my heart is set on you by ohprongs is definitely a tick-all-the-boxes fic for me, and is impossibly sweet with just the right amount of light angst dotted in - Traveler by bumblebeeskness is absolutely heartbreaking and hilarious in places and overall so beautiful it’ll make you cry - Set Me In Motion by lemonoclefox is another great one, with a perfect mix of angst and fluff, as well as some great tension, pining, and some brilliant cooking anecdotes - Also anything by Lecrit – yes please!!
8) What’s something you’re looking forward to in the upcoming season of Shadowhunters?
We’ve had hints that we might get to see some domestic malec, so that, of course! I’m also totally here for the Garrobane development we got last season, so more of that would be wonderful. And Sizzy?? If this Simon/Izzy slow burn is going to continue, sign me up. I think Em and Alberto are doing a great job with their relationship! (Although I am surprisingly conflicted, because I’ve enjoyed Simon/Maia more than I expected to, considering I was fairly apathetic to their relationship pre-show…)
9) Can you give us a sneak peek to what you’re writing next? Or at least any hints to what’s to come?
I’m currently continuing Fall Without Wings as my main project, and I go back to dabble in my celeb!Magnus&cop!Alec AU now and then. Once I’ve finished FWW, I’ve got a super-secret (I’m kidding) multi-chap WIP that I started and have abandoned, so I’m hoping to finish that. I’ve also got two multi-chap AUs planned as full-time projects to start after FWW is done. (See, ideas?? Too many!!)
10) Do you have advice for anyone who might be interested in writing fan fiction?
Honestly, just go for it. If you want to start writing in the hope of someday getting published, fanfic is a great place to start. If you want to write fanfic just because, then there’s nothing stopping you! There are two things I always recommend to people who want to write, in any way, and that’s 1) read as much and as widely as you possibly can, and 2) practise until your fingers fall off! (Not literally, but you know what I mean!)
11) Do you prefer to write in AU verse or canon verse? Why?
I’ve got to be honest, I prefer AU verses, both writing and reading. There’s much more freedom in an AU. You don’t get people in the comments picking apart little details you’ve changed, and you don’t have stupid plot lines/silly world rules you didn’t like in canon that you’re supposed to take note of. I find there’s more fun to be had in a good AU. Even if you’re just tweaking things a little bit here and there to change the backstory, I prefer it to writing in strict canon.

Dearest Fanfic Readers! A Heartsdesire456 Update!
So many thanks to all the readers, new and old, who binge-read all my fics in November. Seriously. SO many people read entire fandoms of fics from me. I love you guys.
As you know, my (slightly cheated on) Hiatus was due to NaNoWriMo and I won! Since it ended, I’ve been burned out on writing entirely until today. The plan has been to finish The Magic In His Kiss ASAP, and that is still my goal!
I have no work done on it yet, but I’m pushing to try and get the urge to work on it. However, at the moment, I’m working on something that I started in October of 2016 and then abandoned.... a Malec figure skating AU!
Longtime fans and friends will know that I’m a huge figure skating fan. I started writing this fic, which is an AU where Alec and Izzy are based on my real life favorite ice dancers, Maia and Alex Shibutani, who are a real life brother/sister ice dancing pair. I love ice dance and men's figure skating most of all the four disciplines, and Maia and Alex are my absolute favorites. I started this fic in which Magnus is a men's singles skater and Alec and Izzy are ice dancers whose coach has just taken on Magnus as her first male singles skater and plot twist... Magnus is the guy Alex hooked up with at the banquet at worlds last year.
However, just after I started writing this fic, Yuri on Ice blew up and though I hadn’t watched anime since everybody in middle school watched Dragon Ball Z and Gundam Wing, I gave it a shot and immediately got sucked into writing alllll the figure skating fanfiction for Yuri On Ice fandom and promptly abandoned this Malec AU.
This year, the Grand Prix has been FUCKING MENTAL so my figure skating juices are flowing again, and I found this fic stashed way back in my WIP folder and breathed life into it and now I’ve got a side of Jimon involved, Lydia as a ladies skater, Camille as Magnus’s abusive ex who is why he left his last coach, and all sorts of fun stuff going on !!!
None of it is based off real life figure skating drama (tbh this is one of the least drama-filled eras of figure skating I’ve ever seen, omg the catty, bitchy rivalries that brewed publically when I first got into skating, Jesus christ) but I’m sure it’ll have to be inspired by some of the crazy, injury-filled shit going on this year. (14 skaters have been sick or injured so far this season. 14!!!)
I WILL try to finish The Magic In His Kiss, but please be patient since my muse has given me Figure Skating Fever and I can only think of this fic right now.
Thank you guys for being patient with me and I hope you will stick around for this to be my 300th fic on AO3!!!

Ask a writer!
tagged by @mysillylittlesoapbox (yes I do still write fic... sometimes :p I’m afraid it’s all Gotham now though!) ...I don’t usually do memes about my writing though so, this should be...interesting...
1. How did you come up with your username and what does it mean?
my name is holly, holly leaves are a thing, I wanted to just be ‘hollyleaf’ but it was already taken so I figured ‘well hey, I’m also small...’ and voila! (no, I’m so sorry, but the Warrior Cats series was not involved at any point, I still haven’t read them and only know a character has my username, or a version of it, because of all the asks I keep getting about it :P)
2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/favorites, follows/subscriptions, visitor hits, kudos)
So I had a quick glance at AO3 and this is something it looks like WAAAAY too much effort for my lazy ass to figure out, plus I dunno how accurate the AO3 stats would be for my stuff anyways because I only very recently put all my fic on there after having most of it posted (and therefore commented on and otherwise interacted with) solely over at LJ for years and years...
I would imagine it’s Imitating Life (spn, deancas), because that’s the one I remember getting the most feedback for. So I’ll just go with that!
3. What is your FFnNet/AO3 profile icon, and why did you choose it?
It’s the same as my tumblr one. Because it’s me and I already had the image saved in an appropriate size. I know, dull right?? (back on LJ I was OBSESSED with finding and/or creating SO MANY different icons to convey different moods and whatnot - they were basically an oldschool version of reaction gifs I guess - but on any other platform I’ve been just... meh about the icon thing... idk!)
4. Do you have any regular/favourite commenters?
@vampirebillionaire has been a regular for my Gotham stuff, notable for jumping ship with me into foxma :) (well not jumping... simultaneously enjoying :p), for which I am profoundly grateful xx but generally my fic style and content is a bit... eclectic I guess? so no, no one who is super regular
5. Is there a fanfic that you keep going back to read again and again?
Of my own? Nah. Well... not AGAIN AND AGAIN like on the regular. I HAVE re-read my stuff OF COURSE :p But usually it’s me re-reading previous parts of a series/set to get the feel for the story/characters again as I write new stuff. Though admittedly I have re-read Imitating Life more than most probably, to check it still reads okay.
As to other authors’ fics - I must confess that I read less and less these days, so there is def not a single one I constantly return to.
I have, however, re-read a few by depthsofgreen since I got into Gotham, as well as some by rissalf and silentsinger
Back in the day there was this one spn last unicorn AU I used to re-read the night before each premiere, because it was a deliciously angsty way to get me in the mood for a new season and pass the time while waiting - particularly notable because AUs are not really my thing, so it was an interesting choice for me to keep returning to! Alas I have lost my link to it however :( Should anyone know the one I mean drop me a line! (Cas was the unicorn, obvs, Dean was the Prince, Sam was Schmendrick, Anna was Molly and Meg was Fortuna)
6. How many stories are you subscribed to? How many do you have bookmarked?
I have ONE (1) story bookmarked - because it is a WIP I am following (and I just learnt how to bookmark the other month)
...what even is subscribing and how is it different??
7. Which AU do you find yourself writing the most?
None at all if possible. Although most of my fics end up being Canon Divergent in the end ofc they are generally canon compliant (based on my interpretation of the canon anyways) at the time of writing... Sometimes canon changes things while I am in the middle of writing stuff though ofc (*shakes fist at Gotham right now*), in which case I will unavoidably be writing something knowingly Canon Divergent/What If.
(aside - I tried to write an spn x-men AU once, but I got bored very quickly... full on AUs are just not me!)
8. How many people are subscribed and bookmarked to you in total? (you can view this on the stats page)
OH THERE’S A STATS PAGE?
*checks*
K - 34 subscribers and 423 bookmarks (whoa that seems a lot??)
hey there’s graphs and stuff with your top five fics based on hits too - that’s pretty cool - my top is in fact Holding On and Letting Go... probably because it was one of my last big spn fics and one of the first I published on AO3...
9. Is there something you’d like to write about but are afraid of people judging you for it? (Feeling brave? If so, share it!)
No... I mean... I don’t think so? If there ever has been it’s passed me by and I’ve forgotten about it.
...for a hot minute I was into Eddie/Isabella in Gotham, and that plot was ofc (understandably) received VERY POORLY by the fandom, so I may have at one point been hesitant to explore that idea (and the related Ozzie/Eddie/Izzy thoughts I had) because of that... but I never got as far as wanting to actually WRITE anything that I recall so... I guess not really?
10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.
There’s a couple of dumb little grammatical things I wish I was better at remembering - like when it’s ‘passed’ and when it’s ‘past’ or when it’s ‘effect’ and when it’s ‘affect.’ Because I forget and have to look it up Every.Damn.Time!
11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often?
Well, the ship I’ve written most for is deancas - so it’s def ‘popular ships’ I write most! (though I would like to point out that it WASN’T ONE when I STARTED :p).
I’m not opposed to writing rarepairs as well however (she says, in the middle of a huge Gotham rarepair series!). I just write... whatever I’m enjoying most at the time.
12. How many stories have you posted on FFNet/AO3 to this day (finished and unfinished)?
I’ve got 39 works up on AO3. Never published on FFNet. Probably got a few little things that I’ve only ever published on tumblr (like my cracky spn/WtNV crossover :p), so total number published across the board is more like 40ish...
13. How many stories do you have saved in/with your writing program?
(not counting the abandoned spn x-men AU that will remain forever unfinished) Just one. I CANNOT work on more than one fic at a time.
14. Do you write down story ideas, or just keep them in your head?
In my head (my stories are never especially complex after all). Once I’m stuck into a fic though I do tend to start creating bullet points below the main text of certain things that are coming next - like specific lines or phrases/metaphors I might think up as I go that I want to make sure I include, or the order of certain scenes if there is a series of short ones on the way, or sometimes points with question marks if I haven’t quite decided on something (eg. ‘have Eddie take his hat off here or wait until Ozzie smiles at him?’ that kind of thing...)
15. Have you ever co-authored a story?
No. I came CLOSE to co-writing a DCBB with the lovely @takadainmate YEARS AGO but we never quite made it work (I got a distracted by involving Balthazar in a subplot and went on my own tangent, we had trouble even getting together to discuss it, the deadline started looming and eventually we wisely close to call it a day!).
For a while there were VAGUE murmurings about returning to the idea... but the plot involved Dean and Cas getting trapped together in Purgatory you see aND THEN SEASON 8 HAPPENED!! So we decided to let canon run with it instead :P
16. How did you discover FFNet/AO3?
While I don’t use FFNet and don’t even read stuff there now, I did used to read fics on it early on. I discovered it while searching for info on my very first TV obsession Due South and was DELIGHTED to find a place full of stories about this thing I loved but had no new content for at the time :)
AO3 I remember being talked about and used a little by my LJ crowd, which is how I heard of it. I didn’t start using it myself until recently when I realised it had very much become the go-to hosting site used by tumblr fic writers.
17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on FFNet/AO3?
Nah.
18. Do you have a nickname or fandom name for your readers?
...my personal readers? As in, not the general name for the various fandoms (like ‘spn family’ or ‘Gotham fam’), but for the people who read my fic specifically?
No... that seems... weird...?
19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?
Actually... no... no one specific. Just... reading lots of fiction by lots of different writers, fic writers included, is what inspired/encouraged me to take a crack at it myself I suppose.
20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?
Do not listen to me!
21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?
Um... both I suppose. Only... my plotting isn’t really... plotting.
Because I just... daydream, you know? And after a bit I’ll realise that I’m coming back to one particular daydream more often than another. And adding to it. And adding to it. Until I’ve got something at least vaguely coherent. At which point I make a decision as to whether I like the scenario enough to write it down or not and if I do, well, it’s already pretty much there and fully formed in my head, so no additional ‘plotting’ necessary (just the ironing out and researching of a few details).
But while I’m daydreaming... well that’s me ‘figuring it out as I go’ I guess.
22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?
My first foray into writing fic was with a Clex re-write of S05 Smallville. It ended up being a sprawling, much too ambitious multi-chapter thing I had no hope of ever finishing. But hey, it kept me out of trouble :p
Anyways, I was part of a sci-fi society at Uni at the time I was writing and each of us in the group developed these different fictional versions of ourselves over the course of our time together... because we were a sci-fi society and it was fun! And I thought it would be a laugh if, for one chapter, I put all of us into my SV fic. So I did (I made us all kryptonite infected characters who lived at Lex’s secret 33.1 facility - if any SV fans are reading) and prefaced the chapter with some disclaimer about how I was sorry if this part was a bit too self indulgent or ‘mary-sue’ or whatever, but that I couldn’t resist doing it for my friends, and that things would get back to normal next chapter.
And generally it was fine - I didn’t have many readers anyway :p
But long LONG after the fact, when I had written many other chapters since, I got a comment on this one chapter from someone saying that they felt my self-insert characters came across as too obviously self indulgent and were unnecessary and that I shouldn’t have written them in.
And you know, it was a fair call. But since I’d actually prefaced the chapter with myself saying that’s EXACTLY what they were, it seemed a bit odd to me that this person would bother making a point of the issue. And to compound confusion - this person had actually already commented POSITIVELY on the chapter when I first posted it, so their comment read something like ‘I’ve been re-reading this and on consideration ACTUALLY I think you should know that...’
So... that was a bit odd. Not really bad, but notable enough that it’s stayed with me! Since I was many many chapters along in the story at that point though it was easy enough to just nod and shrug and move on.
I’m lucky in that I’ve never received any actual scathing or horribly negative comments otherwise. I like to think I’d be thoughtful and philosophical about any serious criticism I might receive...
23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)
Hmmm. Exposition probably. My focus is typically on a character’s emotion at any given time, but when the only thing happening is characters discussing what’s happening and when and why there’s not exactly much strong emotion involved you know? So I struggle, because it’s boring to write and I constantly fear I’m not describing/depicting it in a way that is interesting to the reader and blah blah.
(part of the reason I don’t often write complex stories anymore perhaps - less narrative means less exposition!)
(smut used to be hard... now it is less so... though that doesn’t mean I think I’m good at it now! I don’t think I’ll ever shake the fear that my smut is actually cringe-worthy...)
24. What story(s) are you working on now?
Just The Fox and the Scorpion :)
25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)?
No. Like I say above - I CANNOT work on more than one fic at a time. How do people do that??? I bow to you all!
I have in the past paused in the middle of longer spn fics (like my DCBBs) to knock out some quick ‘finished in the span of an evening’ FICLETS, usually in response to specific happenings in canon (like when Gabriel died and I just HAD to type something up as an outlet). But I don’t think that’s really quite what this question means? Because those aren’t projects OR stories, they are just... SCENES, you know? Also - I haven’t written a ficlet in FOREVER, so I’m not even sure I could do it anymore...
Having said this - I DO CONSTANTLY DAYDREAM. Which involves daydreaming multiple scenarios not exclusive to whatever fic I’m in the middle of. Some of which may well end up being part of the next fic I end up writing. But that’s hardly ‘planning’ I think? Because at that stage of things I’ll have no desire to make what I’m dreaming part of an actual story/fic.
26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself?
Nah. I just write when I feel like it and keep going until I’m done.
If I’m writing for a challenge this changes ofc, because DEADLINES. So sometimes I’ve had to set goals because of that - usually it’s something vague though, like ‘you need to get to this point in the plot by tomorrow night Holly, come on!’ Nothing so regimented as a specific amount of time and/or words every day.
...generally when I’m in the middle of a fic I end up in a kind of... idk, natural momentum that pulls me on? Like there’s this constant FEELING in the back of my mind urging me to get back to the story. And not in a nagging guilt kind of way, in a ‘this is what I WANT to be doing right now’ kind of way.
Not that I end up easily writing every time I get back to the fic or anything! Sometimes I’ll get back to the page and just... be stuck, find I’m not in the mood or can’t think of the words or whatever. Which is frustrating because I still have that feeling of WANTING to continue the story, but I’ll know that I’m not in the right frame of mind so have to leave it for a bit (which can be anywhere from a few hours to a week). Generally the pull to keep writing draws me back in eventually though.
27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started?
Goodness yes. I think if you’re writing regularly you’re just ALWAYS improving, aren’t you? Naturally my fic today is better than my first attempts, but likewise I think some of my Gotham fics are better than my spn fics in some parts. It’s a constant process isn’t it?
28. What is your favorite story(s) that you’ve written?
Imitating Life remains one of the fics I’m most proud of. Not only did the main story hold up well AND stick to overall canon (when it comes to Dean and Cas at least), so I think anyways, I also wove in a couple of subplots I very much enjoyed seeing through to the end. PLUS I really enjoyed all the meta nonsense, including messing about with the format to make it like look (a little bit) like a screenplay. So yes, that one will always hold a dear place in my heart :)
For Gotham I don’t think I’m ever gonna do better than We Are What We Are tbh
29. What is your least favorite story(s) that you’ve written?
Generally unimpressed by ALL my SV fic now. And considering I spent SO MANY HOURS/DAYS/WEEKS/MONTHS/YEARS of my life on it all I kinda feel like I should feel bad about that but... you know I really don’t? Because if it wasn’t for all the time and effort (and love and fun) I put into those not very good stories, I wouldn’t be enjoying the work I’m proud of and writing today. So *shrug emoji*
30. Where do you see yourself (as a writer) in 5 years?
5 whole years? Tbh I rather think I’ll have stopped writing by then. I’ve been winding down when it comes to fic for a LONG TIME now and writing for Gotham feels very much like a minor, brief resurgence of the hobby. Currently planning on calling it a day once I’ve finished Fox and Scorpion in fact.
31. What is the easiest thing about writing?
The part that doesn’t involve writing.
32. What is the hardest thing about writing?
Trying not to be repetitive.
Have I started a paragraph with this character’s name too many times in a row? Am I using ‘furrowed brow’/’bites lip’/’narrows eyes’/’insert stock descriptive phrase here’ too often? Did I use this phrase already or was that in another fic or in the book I was just reading? Is there too much alliteration in this sentence?  - to name but a few of the questions that inevitably pop up related to my paranoia about repetition.
33. Why do you write?
Because I’m insatiable and the stories onscreen aren’t enough for me.
...well that was exhaustingly introspective so I’m way too tired to tag! Interesting one though, made me think! (and taught me some stuff about AO3 :p)

More of the Ideas List (Part 2 of 3)
The other day, after reading over the previous post on the ideas list for typos and whatnot, Partner looked at me and said "I'm looking forward to the novel ideas." So let's try and get to at least one of those this time.
Teleporting SWAT team
Invert The Fall of the House of Usher
Warrior Kings
Poor Private Collins
Cellmates
Glamour for plainness
Izzy
Fertility Deity
Ghost rescuing
Totemic spirit animals of extinct species
Ghost ship one-liners
Hellocene era
Locked spaceship ensemble mystery
Idea #1 came from thinking about superheroes and how I'd actually work to integrate them into society. Because maintaining the status quo is the first impulse of folks in power. And personally, I do prefer the rule of law. Anyways, my thought was, in a world with teleporters, why wouldn't you have a central dispatch to send specially trained SWAT teams (superpowered or not) in at local request. I'd route it through the FBI who already send task forces across the country. Something like the Justice League except part of the existing law enforcement I suppose. So that's a world setting to explore if/when I come up with characters and a plot. I could see this as anything from flash fiction to a novel to a series. So, onto the 'length uncertain' list.
#2 came from a couple writers on Tor.com talking about The Fall of The House of Usher about being the fridged woman in a Gothic horror story. With a psychic connection to your brother who's too busy being gothy to open the door. Sounded like a good idea so I wrote it down to take a stab at myself.
#3 came from a review of a Southeast Asian horror film review in... I think The Atlantic. The film was set at a psychiatric hospital (I think) where dead warrior kings were stealing life force from soldiers to continue fighting each other. With a set up like that, I mean how could I not want to play with the idea at some point.
Poor Private Collins came from playing a Call of Cthulhu game when Ethan, the GM, mentioned the different ways various group have played the scenario and the different results that's produced for an NPC. The idea was the NPC being aware of previous iterations of the scenario but unable to change his own behavior to affect the outcome. So he suffers through several deaths, praying for this new configuration of adventurers to finally get it right. Definitely a horror piece, the poor kid. But to write this one, I'd need to relisten to the recording of that session. And I really dislike hearing recordings of my own voice. Definitely a short story though, if I do it.
#5, Cellmates, stems from an article on how unlikely it was for complex organisms to form from simple bacteria. Which prompted the question: What if we are the only life in the galaxy that made both the leap from simple bacteria sized life to complex organisms AND into consciousness/sentience? I'd set this right as a bunch of scientists are coming to that conclusion, have them grapple with it for a bit. Make a report to some bureaucracy dealing with colonization and terraforming efforts.
#6 came out of reading Mary Robinette Kowal's Glamourist Histories series (well, the first three) and an article by a woman on what it's like getting approached all the time based on their looks. The thinking went that there would have to be at least one or two women who could cast illusions on themselves who would choose to alter her looks to avoid male attention. Which might be interesting in a Victorian comedy of manner piece. I'd aim for a short story out of the idea, but probably get a flash piece. Like I do.
Number seven, Izzy, is the one Partner's probably happiest to hear about. This reminder is a bit unusual for me in that it's just the one word and a name at that. No notes. No description. Just a nickname. And that's enough to remind me which setting I'm planning to place this novel in (PostHuman Studios' Eclipse Phase), the character (a Fall survivor stuck on Earth post apocalypse and evacuation), relationships (dead lover, dead smart-baboon companion, live smart-dog), opening scene/inciting incident, other characters (well, first draft sketches of them), and story structure/plot (travelogue/heist/adventure). Izzy's been gestating in my head for quite awhile. It's time to give her room to grow in the page. Just as soon as I finish off the current WIP, The Dangers of Fraternization.
The fertility deity idea, #8, came from Greg's backstory in our Monsterhearts campaign over on Technical Difficulties. His character's mom is a fertility deity which, combined with some friends having fertility issues, got me to start thinking about an old fertility deity in modern times and how they'd fit in. How would they feel about modern birth control? Or fertility treatments? Pretty sure this one would be short story.
The next one, ghost rescuing, came from a Tumblr post from RPPR's blog about people leaving reviews for haunted items they bought on eBay. Why are they buying these items? Are they reading the ghosts stuck to these items? Why? I'm just going to have to write this one to find out. And I don't know how long it'll take.
#10, Totemic spirit animals of extinct species, feels like an interesting seed of an idea with no supporting setting, characters, or plot. I don't know what to do with it, other than let it continue germinating and see if something else attaches to the idea to flesh it out.
I think #11 could be a lot of fun. I'd find copies of advertisements put in old newspapers announcing the sinking of sailing ships, then continue forward into the present day, the announcements getting shorter and more direct as the language style changes, and continue into the future, morphing the breadth of ships announced as lost to include submarines and container ships and finally spaceships. ... Oh dang it, I'm going to have to include the Russian cosmanauts, the Mercury fire, and Challenger. Well, that will make it harder to write a slow burn. I'll figure it out though. Short story or flash length, definitely. Too easy to wear out my welcome otherwise.
The Hellocene Era is a concept I learned about from the YouTube channel Kurzgesagt. The basic idea is that instead of counting of calendar from a religious dating perspective, we renumber the calendar based on when the archeological evidence says humans first built a temple. Which turns 2017 into 12,017. It is, once again, a seed of an idea, possibly just something to throw in the background of another story. Although, now that I'm thinking about it, I think I should pair it up with the totem spirits idea — humans are responsible for the most species-wide extinction events in recent (geologically speaking) history, so using when humans first really started altering the landscape around us as the apocalyptic marker to restart the calendar in totemic spirit society is rather appealing from a story telling perspective. I'll have to do that. Neat.
#13, locked spaceship ensemble mystery, is just a plot, but one that combines my childhood era of too many mystery books and television shows with my ongoing love of science fiction into a locked room mystery where the locked room is a spaceship. If/when I build the setting and some characters for this plot, it should end up at novella length at minimum. I'll have to see though.
