YOU! Yeah, you!
Are you overwhelmed by social media? Yearning for the early 2000s internet with casual games, forums, fun graphics, and HTML customization? May I offer you a goat in these trying times?
Tumblr media
Goatlings is a super cute, simple little pet + doll maker site I've been playing that I simply adore! I'm not sponsored for this or anything, I just really love this site and want to invite more ppl to join!
There's a handful of simple games to play, and a little explore + battle mechanic too. Think Neopets, but much more and better imo!
But the best thing is how low-key it is! There's very little FOMO. Just log in when you want, you can advance at your own pace. There are some time-limited things, but they're never out of reach, and honestly everything just continues to get better and better. New stuff is added all the time!
You can adopt cute little Goatlings and customize them and their pages!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's also a built-in Picrew doll maker for your user icon! You collect items to build your inventory, and since this site has been around for a while, there are LOADS of items!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did I mention there's a bunch of cute items to collect too? You can add them to your Goatlings pages as treasures!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only that, but users (artists and non-artists alike) are encouraged to submit ideas for everything on the site! Goats, things to add to the doll maker, items, anything! A ton of items are adapted from designs submitted by users. There are contests for them too, where everyone votes on favorites and you get prizes for winning!
There's also charity drives going on at all times, so if you like to throw money at indie game companies for their fun sites, you can do that AND help support a good cause 💕
Click here to check it out!
I do get a fun lil in-game referral bonus if you use this link, but you don't have use it. I'd be happy just seeing more friendly faces there!
(btw if you sign up, I'm Zillychu on there as well! Feel free to say hi on the site or in the official discord!)

This is more of a problem on Facebook and Twitter, but there are some fellow authors who get a tad... upset when you talk about money and royalty earnings.
Needless to say, my frankness about how royalties work and just how little many of us are earning from our labor has drawn the ire of a few people, even here on Tumblr.hell.
I'm not particularly bothered by this. In my view, they're the same people who won't discuss wages in the workplace because they don't want anyone else to earn what they do. They know the system is unfairly rigged, but they like it that way because they're scared if more people are educated about how things work, they'll lose whatever competitive edge they think they have, thus enforcing the status quo.
Needless to say, I don't care for this view.
I'm very much a "holy shit, two cakes" kind of creator. I also very firmly believe in pulling people up behind me and spreading the wealth of information that was shared freely with me by other like-minded individuals who also believe that the mysteries around publishing are gatekeeping bullshit and everyone deserves the chance to earn money from their creative endeavors, not just the people who can afford to.
Anyway, David Gaughran's 'Let's Get Digital: How To Self-Publish And Why You Should' is an invaluable resource for indie authors and provides great insight into how publishing and distribution work. It is available for free through the retailers listed on his website.
If you don't want to publish exclusively through Amazon, draft2digital.com does global ebook and also paperback distribution. (I've only used it for ebooks, but I'll be trying out their paperback options for my next book.) You can pair it up with a books2read account to create easy-to-post buy links. Draft2Digital also allows for distribution through library lending services like Overdrive. So that's neat. (NB: if you use d2d, you can't use Kindle Unlimited, so be aware of what links you have active and where if you decide to enroll in KU. You can always opt for wide distribution again once your KU time expires.)
D2D also recently partnered with FindawayVoices.com for audiobook distribution. You can find voice actors there, or you can upload your own files if you already have them. You can submit to Audible through them, too, but you'll earn a pittance more if you upload directly through Audible. Findaway also allows for library lending distribution through Libby and several other global equivalents.
If you need ISBNs, you can buy them cheaper in bulk from Bowker at myidentifiers.com
Individual storefront options like Payhip.com and Gumroad.com are also great ways to allow people to buy directly from you, though I soured on Gumroad after the whole NFT thing and their CEO harassing people on Twitter over it. Payhip is now my preferred storefront, and as an added bonus, they calculate VAT in European countries as well, so that's one less thing for me as an indie author to work out. As an added bonus, Payhip can be directly integrated into your author website if you have one. It's a feature I'll be implementing soon.
itch.io also allows for the sale and distribution of ebook files, though I haven't used it yet.
If you don't have the means to hire a cover designer or the means to do it yourself in photoshop, Canva.com has some decent-ish ebook templates. Just make sure the images and fonts you're using have the right licenses for commercial use.
Editing and formatting are also extremely important, though I know not everyone can afford them. If you can, I highly suggest doing so and shelling out extra to have them format your work across mediums. Ebook formatting is different from paperback formatting, and it can look very strange if you just try to format an ebook into a pdf. It is a skill you can teach yourself (plenty of youtube videos) if you really want to, but I prefer to throw money at my editors, who provide formatting as an additional service. Whatever you can afford to do to streamline the process is money well spent.
Also, do not be shy about using affiliate links to sell your work. Authors lose a solid chunk of money to places like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, etc., in distribution fees. Whatever pennies you can scrape back through affiliate links for directing traffic to those sites is hard-earned--and it is literal pennies sometimes. You can also integrate any affiliate links you do have into draft2digital, so they auto-generate, which is handy.
When it comes to paperbacks, BookShop.org offers the best affiliate earnings, and a percentage of the sale goes toward supporting indie bookstores. They do not take that percentage from your earnings, they pay it themselves. Libro.FM is the audiobook equivalent of BookShop.org, and they also give a percentage of sales to supporting indie book stores.
Anyway, I hope that helps someone. Good luck out there.
Also, if you're the person who sent me the irate email about "giving away trade secrets," feel free to die mad about it. 😘

You know I actually messaged the creator of the mysterious flesh pit when I first saw stuff from the blog. It was like “This is some of the most intricately detailed, thoroughly thought out, and absolutely riveting things I’ve ever seen. I am on awe of your dedication and skill. Unfortunately it is also the most horrible thing I have ever seen. Fantastic job.” And they responded “Yes that was the intended effect. Thank you.” Also: there is a Chilis in the park because they were inspired by the mini chilis you see in airports and stuff. They were pretty cool. Btw have they released some new stuff I haven’t seen yet?
The creator accepts questions from fans, and every few months he answers a bunch at a time. I prefer the QNAs over the rest of the blog because they go into much more detail than the regular posts of old park signs and company memos and material salvaged from the 2007 incident.
I'm also a big fan of the maps
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gumption is a fictional county that encompasses parts of the real world counties of Sterling and Tom Green (no relation to the actor)
The very nature of the permian basin superorganism means that it has never been seen above the surface, but my absolute favorite addition to the entire canon is from the most recent QNA where the author finally reveals what the damn thing looks like
Tumblr media
This image is described in universe as an artists impression of what it might look like if it woke up and breached, but I'm willing to bet this is more or less accurate. The superorganism is in its own fictional phylum, but you can see that it's clearly designed to resemble echinoderms and mollusks; it's a big ass starfish with a clamlike mantle on top, lots of tubed feet and radial eyespots, and there's evidence it may be extraterrestrial because the fossilized remains of a similar superorganism were discovered by a Venus probe.
Tumblr media
I've submitted a couple questions to the creator in the hopes he'll pick mine for the next QNA
Did the protrusions that burst from the surface in 2007 ever sink back below, or do they remain exposed to this day?
If the superorganism spans hundreds of miles outside the borders of Gumption and the defunct national park, what would stop anyone in the surrounding counties from digging down disturbing it themselves? I guess digging through hundreds of meters of rock is difficult, but surely there would be more than one company in the region that would want to take advantage of the superorganism.
We know roughly what shape it is from seismological data (as seen from the earthquake warning in the second map), and we know roughly how deep it extends from boreholes
Tumblr media
Assuming I've read this image correctly, the superorganism is about 30km at its thickest point near the center, and tapers out as you travel further down its arms, though the second and third boreholes from the right show that there are deepers layers of tissue below the main body. From the surface, it goes rock, organism, rock, organism, rock, so there are limbs below the main limbs, or maybe the main limb is actually just the mantle and the lower tissue is the limb itself. I don't know, and that's what I love about it; we still have so much to learn!

New works published, December ahead, and plans for the new year!
Good evening and happy December!
Here's the sign-up link to get these sorts of updates and lists directly into your inbox.
Happy second night of Hanukkah for anyone else celebrating, we lit our first candle last night and have also been doing a Hanukkah gift box with little bears and accessories, so we'll see if our first bear gets a yarmulke or something to wear tonight.
In the past month, I did go along to the Wakefield Makers Fair and it was a brilliant day, was lovely to speak to lots of other queer people in Wakefield and to chat around - I also did Honeypot comedy at the Room Above in Bristol for the first time, and it was a gorgeous night, super fun!
I am in the end stages of finalising my new apartment in Bradford, and once all the paperwork is done and I have my keys, I will be uploading pictures and videos as I move in and redecorate the place. The building went up toward the end of the 19th century, and while it was converted to apartments a lot more recently, only a few decades ago, I'll of course be decorating in more Victorian styles and with contemporary furnishings, and I'll be documenting my progress as I go.
In the meantime I've been wrestling with paperwork and the whole process whilst being technically homeless and going between partners' homes, so apologies for the delays and periods of quiet, work-wise!
I tend to be quite active in writing and publishing over the month of December because Christmas and the Gregorian new year aren't really my thing, so hopefully if you do spend a lot of time celebrating those or generally being offline, you'll be able to come back to a backlog when you've time to read again!
Speaking of, I have updated my commission guidelines, which are here pinned on my Tumblr page, and I'm in the process of editing and collating some short stories into collections at the moment. There'll be a few eBook and paperback collections of fantasy, horror, & romance short stories, and then depending on what I can do on Amazon, I'll also do some collections of erotica. I will not be able to post most monsterfucker stuff on Amazon because of Amazon's restrictions, but I will probably still do some eBooks and make them available on Smashwords and perhaps on Gumroad or Itch.io.
I will also resume podcasting in the new year too hopefully!
Relevant to restrictions, not everything I might want to write is always going to be permitted on Patreon in line with their own guidelines, so I have set up a SubscribeStar as a backup, and also to permit me to publish anything that might be too taboo for Patreon in future. I will be uploading my backlog of previous works and setting up a tiered system on SubscribeStar, hopefully while we're working on collating other stories together in the next month or so.
In the new year, I will of course be doing various markets and conventions, and if you'd like me to come and be part of any queer or trans events, or any writers' events, where you are in the UK, please do let me know! Definitely always feel free to recommend any events to me, whether they're cons or festivals, or local markets and events, or even stand-up comedy things - you can send me messages on whatever platforms, or my email is always [email protected]. As well as working on new paperback short story collections for the new year and the badges I already sell at events, I also want to work on some sticker designs and similar.
I was super happy this year to submit to a few publications and get accepted, and I do want to keep that up as we come into 2024, so recs for those would also be appreciated!
I'm going to do a list this month of my favourite films and new releases of 2023, but in the meantime, I would just like to recommend Down Low (2023, dir. Rightor Doyle) - it's such a bizarre and unexpected gay movie, horny in the best and most ridiculous of ways, and bittersweet at its end but in a way that really clicks.
December having come around also means there's new prompts on Trans Erotica! If you're trans and write erotica or erotic horror, romance, etc, come and submit!

Hey y’all! Getting a few questions about a few different recent alterations and concern about how many there seem to have been lately.
First of all. Alterations are normal and fairly constant, especially with the Six costumes. I know there are a few that the queendom has talked about recently, but there are loads of alterations that I’m constantly noting (and @lightleckrereins) that we just don’t post about. This isn’t any notable increase in number, it’s just an increase in the number that have been noticed and/or spoken about by the queendom more broadly.
Most of these are not noteworthy or concerning in anyway. Alterations are a very routine element of costuming. Sometimes they’re to improve the comfort of a costume on an actor. Sometimes they’re to improve how the costume fits from an aesthetic perspective. Sometimes they’re to improve fit, as even the most minor of changes in body weight/measurement (even over the space of a few weeks, much less years) can sometimes require an alteration. There are just so many different routine concerns that can come up and again alterations are very normal.
Again, I rarely post about these. It would be a ridiculous number of posts to keep up with, especially considering that the difference is usually so negligible that it doesn’t have any effect on the design. I also want to be mindful of the queens - because many of these alterations are related to (even very small) fluctuation in sizing and weight, I’d usually prefer to not comment. When there are major alterations that lead to a design change, I will always post about those. Otherwise, I rarely will of my own accord. Any readers are still very welcome to submit questions about alterations, and I’ll be happy to answer any that I can! But I do want to be upfront about the fact that I may not always answer and/or I may not always answer as frankly and specifically as I do with some other questions.

Adopt Drama
Have you ever been excited to get involved with the adopts? So excited you notice they are accepting staff, submit an application just because, and then they accept you? And after being a fair staff member, they remove you just because they don't like you? Yeah. That's me. (And this is the TLDR) Hello I'm under the guise of anon and I am here to tell a salty story. I'm tired of keeping it all to myself and beating myself up over it. Though given how long and detailed this is, I'm sure those involved will know who I am. I've already blocked those who I felt wronged me described in this post. What's the worst they can do now that I'm no longer apart of their cult?
PART ONE: New thing, lemme be apart of it! I've never been in an adopt thing before, or a closed species. I do not know the customs, etiquette, that sort of stuff. This one I saw on the forum caught my eye. Looking through and wowza, staff applications are open. Me being the power thirsty gremlin I am, went and applied. Might as well try, worst thing they're gonna do is reject. If that's the case, oh well, move on with day. But they ended up accepting me and as a result, I'm not just a member, but apart of the staff team. Glad about that too because the staff team is so much more active and catered towards than the members themselves half of the time.
Learned how the closed species thing worked (kinda), bases they use, traits to make things feel a bit more systematic, breeding... things? Didn't understand the raffling and when I asked if i could have a raffle child in a joint breeding I was met with hostility. Shook me for a few days but other than that there wasn't anything particular negative. (They did have to make a rule to get me to shut up as I would nonstop talk about a certain game, it just comes up naturally what can I say?)
It was nice, there were events, opportunities to help hone my pixel art skills, a sense of community. Though it was a heavily curated to be happy space, like a smile with too many teeth. I also met a ton of nice folks there, and SO many good artists, some of which I became more familiar and friendly with.
PART TWO: Trouble Brewing I wanted to do a cool breeding between two adopts. I'm a rare hunter, but not just a rare one: a cool rare hunter. If the adopts I have can look cool and rare, that's all I'm asking for. There's this one staff member in the community who does really, really cool adopt designs- And we on cool friend terms too. I go to them and ask them to do my breeding. They accept and we do business per usual. Then comes time to submit the adopts for archiving purposes. They get stopped by the admins because the adopt was "too big". When the artist asked what size it should be, the admins only respond with "smaller". Pixel art can't just be resized, but the real kicker was that there were other adopts in the archive that were just as big as this one. This one was only too big because it took up so much space with all it's cool features.
After a lot of back and forth, the adopt went through with the admins buckling down on more restrictions and my adopt having the traits that it should, but certain ones could not be passed. In the past, something like tentacles were not counted as tails but limbs. This made me wonder. I went to the archives to look up adopts made by this artist. The owner also commissioned this same artist to do a cool adopt for them. It had the same energy and traits, but they were all passable by breeding, along with tentacle features that did not count as tails. I could only assume that this inconstancy was because they were the owner. The recent event being a success, staff members were free to make their own adopt with any sort of traits they want. ANY. I took this as an opportunity to make the rarest thing possible and try to find the answers I was looking for. In a sense, I wanted to see some sort of justice for the artist that got shot down by my breeding request. And I also wanted answers. How do you not have a proper size limit? And even if you have a proper size limit, how does the total percentage of an adopt make it too big when the size is no different than something else- They even follow the same base. Somewhere in between the artist that took on my breeding got not banned, but removed from the team with no explanation, though it wasn't hard to guess why. Guess they didn't like someone who was just trying to understand what was going on. It felt like some sort of injustice and these were valid questions. I took this into my own hands (which may not have been the best idea at the time but these admins felt far too out of touch and out of the loop to talk to).
And so I asked questions in the dedicated questions channel. Lots of questions because I am confused. "It's too big, make it smaller." "I can't see your sketch." I accommodate and try to be as nice as possible. Just when things look like they have been approved, I'm close enough to the original base while traits can be identified- Admins say my piece (which I have worked hours on) isn't a valid thing and I need to start over again. At this point I am tired. For a few weeks I have been keeping quiet, popping in to interact with those I've befriended, but that's it. My interactions with the admins have been strained. One has been aggressive towards me, and other folks in the community also took notice. It made me feel very valid when someone came into my DMs asking me if I was okay because this one admin was being rougher with me than other people in the community.
I get it, I'll simmer down for a bit, let it blow over, do a few event things to maybe give some staff friends a smile, there was even a gift exchange thing going on too. PART THREE: Up in flames Out of the blue, one of the most non-involved mods on the server (but most certainly involved as they hold a high ranking due to the owner personally knowing in real life) sends me a message. This message in a nutshell said that I was removed from the staff and that any outstanding work I had should be submitted within a month. There was no prior warning, no strike system to let me know, no reasoning behind this removal. Faced with this sort of treatment, I professionally go something along the lines of "okay, but why" and after many messages of back and forth, this messenger responded with "learn to read boundaries. now stop pestering me."
I was completely in shambles for a few weeks. One of my close friends noticed and if it wasn't for their connections, I would NOT have been "granted an audience" with the owner.
We talked things out. Literally the only reason why they removed me was because my questions felt pressuring and I was associated with the previous artist they removed. Also that I was too intimidating and scary to talk to despite me just,,, not being that? Clearly they haven't interacted with me enough, or they always met me with hostility (coughcough that first interaction with the joint breeding) so I end up biting back.
Thinking back on this now, those were the only reasons why they removed me from the staff team. I also talked with a few of the staff I was acquainted with and they agreed that I didn't need something like this to happen to me. This was all a decision made by the admins. They hate me.
After the whole talk the owner offered me a position back as consolidation or something. There was still the gift exchange going on and I had one last breeding I wanted to see through myself, so I went back in just to do those. In the process I did see how they were planning to revamp and what not.
I personally thought it was a mess. I quickly finished my outstanding works, got to stick around to see people react to the gift exchange (Mine had to be done by a backup artist because the one that got me was the messenger, pretty sure they didn't want to do mine because of our only interaction and they didn't want to give me a lick of goodness from them), and then left.
Left the staff position, left the species after handing out all my cool rare things for free, and then separated. I still keep in touch with some folks though. PART FOUR: The aftermath. It's been some time since this. A few months I'd say. And I'm still salty.
I think it's because I never got the closure I wanted. Or maybe because the owner, despite having talked to me, is still doing what they have done before. The remaining artists were never held to the same standard me and the other artist were held to, owner is still getting all the funds and the staff don't get to see a portion of that, owner can pull things out of thin air whereas staff are still held to their standards and whatever- It's just infuriating. Not to mention they go back on their own word. They gonna close down the adopt because they tired? Okay. Not too long afterwards they open it back up with a slightly different name and not just on FR, but on another collection site as well. They are everywhere and it's so annoying.
I still see them around despite having blocked them because they are that active. And I never realized how much they have come to bother me until I ran into someone with the exact same profile picture as the owner. I felt bad blocking someone just for the icon- But it made me skiddish and upset- sorry person.
I hate how I'm still upset.
I just, want to be heard. To be validated. Sorry if this was all over the place, there was so much happening, so much to unpack, and it still upsetting to think back on. But at least it'll be read. Thanks for reading.

Happy Birthday Scottish artist Jack Vettriano.
Born Jack Hoggan 1951 in St. Andrews, I think many of us will identify with Jack’s upbringing in the industrial seaside town of Methil, in Fife.
The family lived in a spartan miner’s cottage, sharing a bed with his brother and wearing hand-me-down clothes. From the age of 10, his father sent him out delivering papers and milk, cleaning windows and picking potatoes — any job that would earn money, he took half his earning from the youngster.
At 16, like so many in the Fife area he went into the pits, as a mining engineer, he also spent sometime as a bingo caller at the Beachcomber Amusements on Leven Promenade.
For his 21st birthday, his then girlfriend gave him a set of watercolour paints, from there he taught himself to paint. His first attempts at painting were copies of impressionist paintings such as Poppy Fields by Claude Monet. His early influences also included works displayed in the Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery. He moved to Edinburgh in 1987 and adopted the last name of Vettriano, his mother’s maiden name. Jack applied to study Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh, but his portfolio was rejected.
A year later he submitted two paintings for sale to the Royal Scottish Academy. He sold both paintings, and galleries began approaching him to sell his work. Vettriano successfully exhibited his work in many cities, including Edinburgh, Hong Kong, London, and New York. Vettriano’s paintings typically sell for between £48,000 and £195,000, and his total income from royalties is £500,000 per year.
The Royal Academy rejected The Singing Butler for its 1992 summer exhibition, but it sold for £744,500 in 2004, and I say good on him, I suspect their refusal was more to do with snobbery than anything else.
Jack went on to create a series of seven paintings in 1996 that commemorated Sir Malcolm Campbell’s land-speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The most expensive painting in this series was Bluebird at Bonneville, which sold for £468,000 in 2007.
It’s not all about pocketing his earnings though, Bethany Christian Trust, Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres, Quarriers and Teenage Cancer Trust are just a few of the charities to have benefitted from the sale of some of his paintings.
Vettriano collaborated with Sir Jackie Stewart in 2008 to create Tension, Timing, Triumph – Monaco 1971, a triptych that commemorated Stewart’s overall victory of the 1971 Formula One racing season The Weight is Vettriano’s self-portrait, which has been displayed in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery since 2011.
He likes to gamble on horses, but only bets what he can afford to lose, which I think would mean every day!!!
Jack has set up the Vettriano Trust, and plans to leave his money in the trust “to do good work”
His work rarely fails at auction - he points out that a recent oil painting of his sold for £35,000, well above the estimate. Reproductions of the painting remain the best selling art print in the UK.
But while Vettriano is loved, he's also loathed.
His work has been variously described as "brainless erotica", "just colouring in" "mere wallpaper" and "crass male fantasy ". But another artist David Mach says: "If he was a fashion designer Jack would be right up there. It's all just art world snobbery." Just as I said earlier.
Now 70, he still has his demons, and still rails against the establishments which continue to shut him out. But after two postponements and nearly three years of waiting, he recently said he's delighted his exhibition in Kirkcaldy finally opened to the public earlier this year
One of my favourites by Vettriano is “Dr Connolly I Presume” –which Glasgow street artist Rogue One reproduced in a giant mural outside Hootenanny Bar at Dixon Street
You can check out more from this talented Fifer on his own web site below, and while some of his work is described as erotic, it really is very tame, naughty but nice I would say.

I have just noticed in the episodes "Space-Probed" and "No Pain, No Painting", Wakko seems to have a white patch on his stomach. Any thoughts on this? (in case you don't believe it, I saw these pictures from nebbie 91 continuing your post about The Warner's gloves.)
Tumblr media
In "Space Probed", his belly is white only after he transformed into a bat, so I think it's just part of the transformation. Notice how the white spot goes down to the base of his torso, which means you should be able to see it even under his sweatshirt, but it isn't present at any other time in the episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In "No Pain, No Painting", well... I just kind of chalk it up to an animation error, which can easily be the in-universe explanation as well. It only appears for a few frames, less than a second. Possibly a holdover from the original designs?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, original Yakko had a spot on his torso, anyway. I know it isn't an exciting answer. The Warners, as toons, can control what they look like- maybe Wakko just likes to have a white belly sometimes?
Some people are adamant that Wakko either looks better with a white belly, or even that he's supposed to have a white belly, and all the instances of him having a black belly are the real animation errors. That second part may be a joke, but I did see someone say it once. If there's anyone out there who really believes that, I would only point to the magnitude of evidence to the contrary. I can post some if asked, but I think it's plainly apparent. Depicting him with a white belly in art is purely subjective, but I personally prefer the "base" black belly design. This is probably the most controversial post I've made on this blog.
I know the pace of the last week is unsustainable, but I am really having a lot of fun answering all these asks. I really encourage anyone out there to ask me about whatever Animaniacs-related thing you feel like talking about. Doesn't have to be a lore-related question like most of the recent asks have been, though I do enjoy those a lot. You can tell me your own fan theories, your own headcanons (one at a time please), talk about behind-the-scenes stuff. I would be overjoyed if anyone asked about my fanfiction or WIPs. You can see more of my ask guidelines, suggestions, and my WIPs in my introduction post. If you've submitted any ask already, thank you a lot!

19 with Demo and Kammie :>
The bois are here, consider this a good introduction to both of them ewe
I tried to keep it to 1k I really did but the ficlet got away from me :’D
Fandom: Warhammer 40k Pairing: Demokritos/Kamazothi (OCs) Prompt: “In my defense, I really wanted to” Word Count: 1,342 Prompt List: Here
There was a peacefulness found in the sparring cages.
No distractions, just the weapon in one’s grasp, the pounding of hearts and the singular focus that came with watching an opponent. It was not a fight to the death and in this case, it was not even a fight that would last until blood was shed. Enough blood had been loss from the most recent battle, and this was merely a way to relax, to ease away from the blood haze that filled the two Astartes minds.
One wielded a chainsword, it’s engine silent but its blows heavy, as it’s master preferred. Demokritos was not a graceful being, he was not designed nor taught to be. He was a master of sieges, of being the first into break the enemy’s ranks, defenses and prided himself on being the last thing they saw.
His opponent was similar yet different.
Kamazothi was equally as brutal but favored two blades; dark, curved, wicked like the fangs and claws of an apex predator. Fitting for a headhunter such as Kamazothi, who enjoyed stalking down his enemies as much as he enjoyed straight forward combat. Compared to Demokritos he was far more agile and made use of his speed.
Different as they were, it was here that those differences blended together to create the deadly dance that they both savored. One moment, they circled each other, grinning as they took deep breaths and eyed each other. Each moment was analyzed, each false movement was observed as they tried to make the other react.
In the blink of an eye Demokritos charged forward, chainsword ready for an over the head swing sparking Kamazothi to charge forward as well. Their blades met, ringing out as they snarled, Kamazothi was crouched low, crossing his blades to stop Demokritos’ swing. His blades hooked in between the teeth of the chain.
Still, Demokritos put more strength into his movement, leaning down, his arms shaking as Kamazothi held his stance and refused to kneel.
The look on Kamazothi’s face was wild; pupils narrow, and his grin wide, revealing fangs. A look that Demokritos shared as his own smile grew wider and he put more strength behind his swing.
“Submit Kamazothi” Demokritos chuckled, “I’ve had you on the backfoot for half of this match.”
“Is that how you see it? As far as I can tell-” Kamazothi replied, beginning to stand from his crouch, yet Demokritos’ grin remained, “-I’ve been playing around.”
Instantly Demokritos pulled away, watching Kamazothi as he put distance between them and placing his blade in a defensive stance.
Kamazothi stood to his full height and rolled his neck, sighing as he did and flexed his grip around his twin blades. There was no doubt in Demokritos mind, if this were a real battle, Kamazothi would have already lunged.
“How are you feeling, my dear?” Kamazothi asked, turning his gaze upon him. His grin had faded some and the look in his eyes had turned kinder, if only by a fraction.
Demokritos took a slow breath. They were still sparring but the question was asked in good spirit. In truth, his side was beginning to ache, the wound was the result of a chaplain’s crozius. Though whatever joy the loyalist had felt was short lived, much like his life.
He knew that Kamazothi was in a similar state as well. He didn’t need to peek under his shirt to know the wrappings around his waist were starting to stain red.
It was best to finish this quickly then.
Seizing the moment that Kamazothi’s eyes were closed, Demokritos charged forward once, a roar leaving his mouth.
Even if Kamazothi was faster, but for the few moments he was distracted Demokritos used it to his advantage.
Kamazothi’s eyes snapped open, wide, and alert, already crossing his blades once more as he neared him. He didn’t have time to drop low barely enough to brace himself for impact-
The sounds metal sliding against metal filled the air as Kamazothi bared his teeth and growled. “You’ll have to do better than that Demo” He spoke, leaning forward. He could have tried to continue pushing, forcing Demokritos to move back or hold his ground.
Demokritos chose neither.
Before he could utter another word, Demokritos slammed his head against Kamazothi’s, pushing past the pain that flared as his opponent stepped back and continued his attack. With a hard swing of his blade, he knocked away one of Kamazothi’s blades as he lifted it to defend himself. Left only with one blade, the battle came to a swift end; The elegant fang could not compare to the brutal nature of his chainsword.
What came next was simply ensuring his victory, even if meant trading blows with fists rather than blades.
Their dance continued like that, laughing some as they dodged and weaved around each other, their dance not yet over until Kamazothi threw himself at him.
An action he did not stop, nor did he lift his fists.
Demokritos laughed as he toppled to the ground, feeling Kamazothi’s weight settle on his waist and lean over him enough to place his hands on either side of his head.
“Alright I yield” He spoke, placing his hands on his lover’s hips as he grinned and met his gaze.
Even like this, the aura of threat still lingered around Kamazothi, yet his handsome features were equally as apparent. The brightness of his eyes, the edge of his fangs that his smile showed, the color of the ink swirling around his arms and the way strands of hair fell over his face.
Deadly but beautiful, there were so many more ways he loved the headhunter.
Kamazothi leaned in, purring quietly as he placed a kiss over his lips, “How do you feel, Demo?”
He sighed when Kamazothi pulled away, “Better now. Far better.”
The adrenaline and fire that lingered in his veins long after the battle ended had left, leaving only a slight hum in its place and a far gentler warmth within him.
“Good I’m glad” Kamazothi replied, unmoving though his smile slipped some. “You nearly worried me during that battle. That chaplain was far bolder than many of his brothers. You made quick work of him though, impressively so.”
Demokritos hummed as he stroked his hands up and down Kamazothi’s thighs and hips some. “His brothers certainly did not like when I crushed his skull beneath my boot. It certainly sparked them into greater rage. Though you tore out their hopes.”
“In my defense, I really wanted to” Kamazothi said, “His blood was rich.”
That smile and those fangs that he loved to see so much had been the source of a captain’s death just hours ago. He had watched from a distance as Kamazothi gripped the loyalist fool’s gorget and pulled off his helmet before biting through his neck. His hearts had skipped several beats seeing it.
“You kept his skull, didn’t you?” He asked, lifting a brow.
Kamazothi’s grin grew, “His skull and his blade, killed his own brothers with it. Ah, well he was a strong opponent. I plan to cleanse his skull and pray later.”
That word was said as a long purr, sparking his curiosity.
“Later after?” He asked, drawing out the words.
“After I take my reward for winning” Kamazothi answered and leaned down again, closing his eyes part away.
Ah, a victory kiss, of course.
He leaned up to meet his lover, pleased to feel his lips brush against his-
He jerked as pain flared in his face and he touches his lips as Kamazothi laughed and moved away. Blood covered his fingers when he pulled them away.
“Seriously, Kammie?” Demokritos growled, meeting his lover’s gaze as he collected his blades.
Kamazothi just winked as he headed for the exit, “What? I hunger for you Demo. But such hungers are best filled elsewhere.”
Well…he could hardly disagree with that logic but still…
“Two can play this game Kammie” Demokritos said, grabbing his blade and darting after Kamazothi as he laughed and sprinted out of the sparring cage.
All and all, it was a good day.

Finding God in Anime, Vol. 2 Fills the Need for an Otaku Devotional
Tumblr media
Why is no one else like me? I like anime, but I’m told by the Christians around me that it’s a ungodly art. My friends who do like anime, on the other hand, say and do things that don’t reflect my religious values. What do I do?
If you’ve ever thought this, you’re not alone. Even though anime has become mainstream (even Thor says so), it’s telling that this same thought pattern is one I still hear now in my interactions with young people. And as Kendall and I talked about in his latest podcast episode, it is something we both experienced decades ago. There remains a persistent image of anime—possibly fuelled by the very adult titles that were among those most available in the 1980s, and a reputation for family-unfriendly content—as ungodly.
For instance, a few years ago, an editor at Christianity Today accepted a piece I’d submitted about anime and Christianity. He was interested in the topic, and patiently guided me in the development of a strong, final piece. But before it was posted, the editor retired. His replacement was someone whom I must admit (albeit through gritted teeth) that I admired, and whose work I’ve studied (as recently as last month!) and even used as a teaching tool. But this editor told me that the form was still too strange for their readership. (Hence the gritted teeth.) That was some six or seven years ago, and while the magazine has posted some on anime since then, it just goes to show how little ground has been broken within Christian circles, even for so open a publication as Christianity Today.
This is not to say that there aren’t any resources for this generation of Christian anime fans: This very website is testament to the contrary, as we seek to provide some instruction about how a confused anime fan might approach the topic of whether and how to watch anime, including particular kinds of shows. But even so, it can still feel like an uphill battle for Christian otaku—and a confusing one at that.
That’s why Finding God in Anime, edited by Moriah Jane and our own Laura A. Grace, and now in its second volume, is so significant. It emphasizes to Christian otaku that “anime” and “Christianity” are not mutually exclusive worlds, but that there is a way to worship the LORD while diving into one’s passion for animation.
And that’s not even digging into the actual content of the work, which is full of Bible-centric devotionals that will encourage readers to think more deeply about God through reference to anime, and consider his work while they view series from their favorite studios.
I was honored to be able to write the foreword to Finding God in Anime, Vol. 2. In the short piece, I wrote that within “these pages lies an opportunity, dear readers, to ‘join the party,’ to partake in the greatest adventure…”
Sometimes the analogy of being warriors or sojourners can be overstated, but for those of us who watch shonen series and cheer along with these epic tales, it’s helpful to remember that God’s story for us is vast in reach, fraught with danger, and resulting in the highest prize—the “One Piece” that we’re all seeking.
It is indeed a journey. And for you, dear readers, finding this page or this site may be just an early step in that adventure. Finding God in Anime, written by Christians like you who adore anime, will bolster your faith, even if you aren’t familiar with the particular series it references. Volume two is now available—and as another gift, the digital version is free.
Dive in. Study it. And experience Him through the devotionals. God is speaking to you through your passion. Even if the world deems you strange for liking anime, God doesn’t. You’re his beloved, otaku and all.

The editors of this devotional are running a promotion in which the first 40 people who order a paperback and send a receipt of purchase to [email protected] will receive a free postcard and two stickers (artwork designed by Pippa at strawberryshojo).

1, 2, 7, 15, 18 from this ask game
1. What was the first fandom and/or pairing that you wrote fic for?
Technically, the first fandom I wrote for was MCYT (unpublished). I'm still proud of the premise I came up with and might recycle it, but that fic will remain unpublished for multiple reasons.
2. Do you participate in any writing events or challenges throughout the year? If so, what do you like about them?
Not often. I only just recently started doing more because I actually started being on social media more. The only other challenge I remember doing, outside of the Nimona Big Bang and Nimona Week, was years ago, and I only knew about it because my irl friend (who was in the same fandom) told me about it. I do enjoy them, though. I have a tendency to turn everything I write into a longfic, but events and challenges force me to do shorter writings and explore things I can't in my other fics.
7. Which part of writing do you struggle with most?
Editing. My editing of anything I write usually lasts at most 30 minutes before I get frustrated and post/submit the dang thing anyways because I can't figure out how to make it better.
15. A Hollywood producer tells you that they want to film just one of your fics. Which fic would you want it to be?
I only have one long fic attached to this username, so 100% You're Like Me (<- linked there if you're interested; it's on AO3). It is designed to be sort of a pseudo-sequel to Nimona (2023) because I desperately needed the world to continue to develop, and couldn't get it out of my head without putting it somewhere. Of course, I am much more excited for whatever sequel the writers and producers have planned, but given that we don't have that yet I will be making my knock-off.
(I do have another fic, not under this username, that in theory I would like to see adapted to film more than You're Like Me. I have worked super hard on this fic (not that I haven't worked hard for You're Like Me, but this fic has pushed me technically and forced me to think outside the box on multiple occasions) and has a great plot along with interesting lore. If anything I've written deserves to be adapted to film, and produced by professionals, it's this fic. However, I also don't want this fic to leave the fandom, as the fandom is mostly dead and should probably stay that way. Hypothetically, I would love for this fic to get more attention. However, I'm not sure I would risk the fandom being revived by allowing a Hollywood producer to film it.)
18. What is a line/scene you're really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for this scene.
This is gonna be an excerpt from the previously mentioned unnamed fic. I've changed details to make it more vague. All you need to know is that, previously, Person A, Person B, + others did something they knew wasn't gonna go over well, but it ends up worse than they imagined.
"Do you think we made a mistake?" Person A asked. They should have put more thought into championing for it. Of course this was the outcome. "Do you think we did this at the wrong time?" Person B took a long sip of coffee, appearing to contemplate A's question. After a few moments, they said "I don't know." Person A sighed, and took a sip of their own coffee. "I suppose that would first require there to be a good time, which I don't think exists," Person B continued.
And I like it because, it's kind of funny? Specifically the second line, where I set up a bit of anticipation for the answer of the hard question, then immediately subvert it with the "I don't know". And then we stew in that for a second, before bringing it back around and give an actual answer the the question, managing to subvert expectations again (at least how I read it).
But it also does a good job of putting us in Person A's (who is the main perspective of this chapter) head without saying what they were feeling. I could've told you how Person A was waiting in anticipation for the answer, but prior to this, Person A was doing so much thinking and worrying. I don't have to repeat the fact that they're not in a good mental state. Instead, you get to wait with Person A while person B just... does their own thing. Seemingly unbothered, as they always do. I don't have to tell you how Person A is feeling, because you feel it, too. You're waiting for an answer, then you're mildly disappointed when you don't get one, then a bit of hope comes back once you finally do. I enjoy writing like this; making the readers project their own feelings onto the scene, instead of telling them how a character feels. Personally, it makes me feel more engrossed in a scene.
It also does a really good job of breaking up the scene. As previously mentioned, before this Person A was doing a lot of worrying. Lots of long paragraphs of emotion and overthinking. Posted here, this little snippet seems a bit short, but in context it's balanced perfectly with the text before it and helps to bring Person A and the readers back to the 'present'.
And maybe I'm hyping up these four little paragraphs more than is deserved, but idk. I feel really proud every time I re-read it, and think it does exactly what I need it to.
Anyways, these asks have been fun! If anyone would like me to answer even more questions either from this ask game or the one I posted about previously, feel free to ask! Or if anyone has any other questions about writing / something I've written before, I'd be happy to answer those questions, as well!

Flag on the play!
I wish, just like there is a yellow flag thrown in football, for unnecessary roughness, you could throw one for unnecessary 'jerkness.'
I had a very unpleasant phone call earlier with an editor from a newspaper i was hoping to get permission from for work. That being said, i was angry with myself for not snapping back at her, and inquiring as to why it took her so long to just tell me 'no.'
But in the end, i feel much better, and am somewhat thankful, because she actually proved to be inspiring. And i didn't return her negative favor by stooping to her level.
Often, when we feel slighted or mistreated by a business, a letter of complaint is in order. As i started to draft one, purely for my own ventilation and not for actual sending, i quickly realized i was being too kind and professional in something that would never be seen by the paper. So i went back with my red pen, made some edits, and ended up with this:
Dear ***** ****** ******, I write this letter out of concern for the safety of you and your editorial staff. I have reason to believe that an evil Gremlin, possibly from an underground cavern that recently opened due to a flux in seismic activity, has infiltrated your pressroom. Over a month ago I submitted a request for reprint permission, to which I received no voluntary response. After a series of follow up’s, including several timely calls and 2 emails outlining the request, I actually made contact with what appears to be said Gremlin. You may wonder what reason I have to believe that I was speaking with an evil Gremlin, and not a human member of your staff, but I can assure you I have ample evidence. The first piece of which, is the sheer fact I find it hard to believe you would staff your organization with such a rude, and negative individual who lacks so much professionalism. I was also ignored for over 4 weeks (the approximate gestation period for several Gremlin species above ground, with the exception of the Maguai, which can transform into a Gremlin in less than 12 hours after eating past midnight). The Gremlin also denied me permission for reprinting the article I had requested, based on the fact it would be “commercial use.” The fact that such a vague reason for denial was used in conversation, but specified nowhere on your website, made me suspicious. It then made me question whether the individual using it, had proper knowledge of it’s definition. (Poor vocabulary and grammar are two tell-tale characteristics of Gremlins... Since there aren’t many dictionaries underground, and there’s almost no light to actually read them) My inquisition led to this definition from Merriam Webster: Commercial: a (1) : occupied with or engaged in commerce or work intended for commerce <a commercial artist> (2) : of or relating to commerce  <commercial regulations> (3)   : characteristic of commerce  <commercial weights> (4): suitable, adequate, or prepared for commerce <found oil in commercial quantities>  b (1): being of an average or inferior quality <commercial oxalic acid> <show-quality versus commercial cattle> (2) : producing artistic work of low standards for quick market success 2a: viewed with regard to profit <a commercial success>  b: designed for a large market (3): emphasizing skills and subjects useful in (4): supported by advertisers <commercial TV> The reprint was not going to be used in an advertisement (so 4’s out) and it wasn’t going to be sold (which almost knocks out all of the other uses of the word) and then it hit me: Isn’t every business, including your own, technically commercial? I mean, what business or operation isn’t? They all make money some how. That’s the point! By now, I KNEW you had a serious problem on your hands. Gremlins can be tricky creatures, but there are a few ways you can rid yourself of this nuisance, before it does too much damage to your paper, and/or your image. First, you should find where ******** ******* sits, (as this is who I was trying to make contact with when I encountered the Gremlin) and torch her entire cube. Douse it in gasoline, and just let that mother burn. It’s the only way to ensure any Gremlin eggs it may have stored in the drawers and file folders will be destroyed and keep from hatching. (Chances are she won’t be in it, since Gremlins have an insatiable thirst for Birch beer, and she will need to go guzzle some in the bathroom every 8 minutes or so). Then, ‘fire her.’ Gremlins HATE fire. They hate the actual flames and heat of a real fire, and they even hate the word. In the event that you are scared that my conclusions are far fetched, or possibly incorrect, fear not, for I look at this as a win win either way: If ******** WAS replaced by an evil Gremlin, then you are nipping this problem in the bud now, and can live hakuna matata throughout the rest of your business. If she WASN’T replaced by a Gremlin, then she should be fired anyways, cause she’s a short, patience-lacking BIATCH with no rapport for customer service, and a serious lack of professionalism you shouldn't want to be associated with anyways. Please find this letter as a useful tip, in either outcome. Thanks, and good luck with that Gremlin. -Anonymous

4th of Rain’s Hand, Tirdas
We have seen all the properties now. The one in Ebonheart was well maintained, but it is not a particularly suitable abode for Sildras with the arcane interest that he bears. It is designed far more for leisure and luxury than for anything practical.
Uncle Urnel’s home was, as I had suspected, the one that SIldras was the most delighted with. He had been there before, of course, though it has been nearly a year since last visit. He was excited when he saw the stores for arcane ingredients and the vast library. Uncle Urnel was never much for dicing into the reading side of things and he kept the alchemical stores mostly for a friend of his, who has recently passed.
The whole place is spectacularly furnished, but practical. It is not as though uncle Urnel was the consummate socialite, he kept to himself for the most part. He is very good with numbers and has always helped with maintaining the House treasury. As such, he tried to minimize his own spending. He keeps his staff well and his home besides, but does little for himself unless it is necessary.
The home itself reflects this attitude, and knowing Sildras as I do, I believe it shall be kept in a similar manner. Sildras will, I am sure, be putting most of his personal funds into books and spell components.
His sisters ran around the house and climbed the pillars and shelves in various rooms, as is their habit. And, as I am growing used to, I went behind the anxious staff to reassure them that the girls were natural climbers and that unless they were in danger of harming something, to simply let them have their fun.
Later that night I met with uncle Urnel. It was so good to see him. I fear for his health, though. He has lost quite a bit of weight. He seems to have aged a century since our last meeting. He does not seem to be sleeping.
Of course he dismissed my concerns, saying it was just the weight of being Grandmaster in such a political climate. I feared for what that truly might mean. My plump, jolly uncle was now lean and worn, as though he had been left too long in the sun and dried up. Deep wrinkles have formed above his brow that I cannot recall being there before.
We met by the lake outside of the Temple where we went fishing. I know that he must miss being able to go fishing whenever he had a moment free. The meeting was as much an excuse to fish as it was to discuss the deed and title. He had a solicitor along with him and an order was drawn up for the delivery of title upon Sildras’ completion of his apprenticeship and his official presentation into adult society.
I know that uncle Urnel wants to share the news sooner, but I asked that he present this gift upon Sildras’ nameday. He is turning twelve, after all. It is a bigger birthday and it will be such a joyous gift. I only wish that Sildras could have all of his siblings there. Perhaps I could try to persuade Nabine to let the girls come. If I gain some grand blessing, perhaps I could even persuade the Clan Mother to allow Qau-dar to bring Little Khes, well, she is likely to be all grown up by then. But if they could come, and any of the other of the spouses and children who would be interested. I know it would be a great gift for Sidlras to be able to see them all.
Besides, the House wants me to get Qau-dar and our spouses’ permission regarding this mistress nonsense, it would be the perfect time to take care of all of that. I will have to submit my request in writing.
I shall do this immediately. I have precious little time to be able to find the clan, who will soon be to the gathering place of the clans. Yes, I imagine they are already traveling there now. It is my chance to find them. This is not something to chance at a letter that may only reach them every month or few months. This has a time pressure upon it.
There is still some time before the Council closes its session, I need to get this request to them today. It would be the greatest gift I can provide my son.
