I know this is gonna be a controversial take, but the more I think about it, the more obsessed I am with the idea of Varric voluntarily helping The Crimson Knight (especially in a worldstate where Hawke was left in the Fade).
I’ve talked before about how I view Meredith as the type of person who is motivated by her desire to protect her own at all costs, and how this leads her down the path of Well-Intentioned Extremism, and culminating in becoming the embodiment of the uh, Knight Templar trope.
And Varric is obviously motivated by his motivation to protect Hawke: he shielded them from the Inquisition, and when push came to shove and he was forced to expose Hawke to the Inquisition anyway, it can result in Hawke’s death. The Inquisition fails Hawke, who is basically Varric’s moral compass — without Hawke’s influence, he defaults to siding with the templars at the end of DA2.
Most of the Inquisitor’s inner circle scatters over Thedas and Varric returns to Kirkwall. Varric loves Kirkwall; he’s a Kirkwaller through and through: even though he’s never envisioned nor wanted a life of politics, he becomes the fucking viscount, because there’s nobody else left who wants one drop of the poisoned chalice of that role.
And Kirkwall is a city that has always been dependent on its templars for protection. They are the city’s military force, and the city is noticeably weaker once the templars abandon it — depending on world state, it can lose a significant portion of its territory to one of Varric’s former companions. If someone he knew and trusted can do that to Kirkwall, who else might take advantage of Kirkwall in its weakened state?
Varric is isolated and alone, away from anyone who might be able to help him see the situation in a different light: his main support network is Aveline and Seneschal Bran, neither of whom are known for their ardent support of mage rights. They’re doing their best to clear Kirkwall of the impacts of the war, of the red lyrium, and even though they’re doing their best to avoid exposure, being around that much red lyrium cannot be healthy. Slowly, the paranoia and increased penchant for violence settle in. It becomes impossible to resist spending more time around the substance — and sometimes, it talks! And it sounds like Meredith Stannard.
Varric is desperate and scared and has lost everyone he has ever loved. The Inquisition has been downsized or disbanded, and his only purpose is to serve his city: the same intention with which Meredith started, the same intention and fears that the red lyrium feeds upon in them both.
Varric fears becoming his parents: people who failed to protect him because they were too caught up in their past mistakes.
But sometimes, as people, in our attempts to avoid our fears, we end up barreling into them headfirst instead.

Standing there in all his glory, in a Valentino slim fit navy blue suit, the jacket appearing to have some sort of paisley print, opting against a tie. Leaving his crisp white dress shirt slightly unbuttoned, teasing at his broad carnalized chest as he makes his way from the bar. Heading over to the table, which has an empty seat waiting right beside him with your name written all over it...literally!
Purposely dodging the old lady to your left in a coat that would have PETA ready to throw hands! Gaudy diamonds, terrible Botox, and smelled as if she showered in an entire bottle Chanel No. 5! 
Yeah, no, sorry, not in the mood for another meet and greet right now!
“Joonie” Squeals from your lips once you’re in close enough proximity, his dark piercing eyes cut over to meet yours. A playful smirk tugging on those sinfully thick lips of his, accompanied by those disrespectful ass dimples!
“There she is!” Eyes dripping with warmth, as he ushered you in with open arms ,and in these types of situations, Namjoon felt like home, he was your safe space. “You look fuckin good” The words hushed into your hair in a tenor meant for your ears and your ears only! A hint of something a little more than just friendly playing on his tongue. 
A small little “Thank you” leaves your lips, and if I didn't know any better I’d think the compliment made you a little flustered.
Namjoon was the definition of Ocean arm’s and goddamn if you didn't just love how big this man was! It literally felt like he was hiding you from the entire universe when he has you nuzzled into his frame! The whole interaction couldn't have lasted longer than 20 seconds in all actuality but god you needed it! 
Face flush to his chest, wrapping your arms firm around his waist, letting your eyes flutter shut briefly, a deep slow exhale flooded through your body. Inhaling the musky yet sweet scent of his cologne mixed with his natural aroma, which has grown to become a calming mechanism over the years. 
“You had me worried for a minute…” Placing a quick kiss in your hair, that you would have missed if you blinked but again, your in public soo...
Palms soothing up and down your back gently, as he breathed into your hair , pulling back a little so there was some form of personal space between the two of you.  
“Your late, even for you princess...I know you started early, I got your live(Instagram) notification, so what happened?” Head clocked to the side as he appraises you and fuck, the bass in his voice still has you all types of fucked up! Glancing over your shoulder briefly before leaning up to place a kiss on the hinge of his jaw, that tittered the line of passing as an “innocent” greeting. 
“I’m fine Jonnie it’s nothing, we just got held up in glam.., Ariel was flying in from Miami...we got a late start” Gaze intentionally diverted as you welcomed yourself to his glass of Scotch instead. Damn near inhaling the entire drink as we speak and you hated dark liquor so that alone let him know something was up!  
Merely resisting the urge to smooth out the crease he felt forming between his brows, a dry snort left his lips, rolling his eyes in response to your blatant stubbornness. Nevertheless, always the gentleman, reaching down to pull out your chair so you could take a seat next to him. Mirroring your actions just moments prior, quickly scoping out his surroundings before he brought those plush pillows he calls lips a centimeter away from your ear.
Fuck. 
  “Right, so I'm just going to assume you don’t wanna talk about it right now! Or wait I’m sorry, have you just upgraded to insulting my intelligence straight to my damn face?” 
Brow quirked inquisitively, and you could literally feel every word, tone taking on a hint of seriousness the more he talked. Namjoon licked his lips and the tip skimmed the edge of your ear and I - . 
“For one you smell like an entire bottle of Heidsieck, I can almost taste the nicotine on your tongue and you've been crying I know you. ”  
Pulling back just enough to glare down at you above the brim of his glasses, which he always wore low along his bridge. Eyes daring you to look him in the face a lie again, teasing his fingers through his chocolate locks. Styled in the perfect semi grown out undercut, the top a little on the long side, while the sides tapered into a crisp fade. Sideburns outlining that extremely understated jawline of his! Though you had to admit the yellow gold diamonds dawning his ears were kinda stealing the show right now! 
“So again, do you just not wanna talk about it right now? Or have you forgotten that I have an IQ of 137, and can smell bullshit from here all the way to Gangnam!?” 
You're having very vivid day daydreams of your hand wrapped around this man's windpipe and for once it’s not even remotely sexual! 
Blatantly ignoring the strong twitch within Namjoon’s jaw and simply saying “I’m here, aren’t I!?” Face stoic, tone flat as all hell, in case it wasn’t clear that this conversation was more than over, you opted to eye his bourbon glazed salmon until he got the hint.
 “Oh, for fucks sake! ” Hissed from his lips without a lick of heat behind them, because as quiet as it’s kept ,your lowkey Joon’s baby, which is why he cares to begin with! Picking up a piece on his fork before essentially shoving it into your hand ”Your lucky I can’t have your ass getting sick on me tonight, we still have like, 3 hours left of this bullshit.”
More like he just can’t tell you no, but hey, whatever helps him sleep at night! Sliding his plate in your direction, completely giving up on eating at this point, he knew you needed it more anyway! Finally, starting to feel your mix of poisons hit your system so you knew you needed  to even it out with a little substance. I mean yeah, you could have just ordered your own plate but meh, this was easier! 
Namjoon started busying himself on his phone while you ate, scrolling through a couple contacts until he landed on a contact labeled under “Kookie”.
“Even though you were only late because “Your glam team ran late” There were air bunnies involved, and again you just really wanna choke his ass!  “What are you thinking tonight? He’s actually on his way here right now, but he already has a couple options on him...” 
The question was vague and for damn good reason...considering…
However you knew exactly what he was referring too.., and thank god!
Speaking over a mouth full of salmon, sounding utterly exasperated!  “Honestly, any fucking thing at this point…” 
Namjoon hums thoughtfully, sucking on a Bourbon soaked Ice cube “He’ll be here in 20, I just went with Smartees…always a safe bet...” 
Smartees, candy, Vitamin -E, Molly... Estcasy...it’s all one and the same, just depends on who you ask!
He leans back in, apparently keen on whispering tonight. “Maybe, if your a good girl and eat enough we can split one before we leave...chill you out a little bit. '' Voice thick and heady, lips curling into a grin with a hint of something wicked playing on the ends, as his fingers idly ghost over your forearm. Giving it a light squeeze and regardless of how innocent the skin-ship may seem to the naked eye, you’re well aware of all the underlying innuendos behind it! 
You make a noise of agreement, trying your damnedest to ignore the slight chill coursing up your spine at the pet name. Though before you could even dwell, Namjoon was sliding back in with another update, this one however wasn't as...arousing…to say the least!
“Fox 2’s been waiting for you to get here by the way...since the event was put together by council and all. They've been wanting to talk to us together about the fundraiser, just the same shit as last year.” 
Waving his hand dismissively idly twirling the various pieces of Bvlgari around his fingers, seemingly un-phased while you on the other hand...release the most exasperated huff! Reclining against your seat, eyes rolling to the back of your head in 30 different directions! Yeah, It comes with the territory, you know this, hints Namjoons reaction, or lack thereof!  But fuck you just really weren’t in the mood to do press tonight, It’s literally physically exhausting to pretend that you weren’t just PISSED! 
“Of -fuckin- course they do!” Stabbing your mashed potatoes in a way that's... somewhat concerning… 
“Baby.” It was a warning, though his voice sat barley above a whisper, his tone was crystal! Eyes cutting in your direction briefly before dropping back down to his phone….
You didn't have it in you to argue, there’s no way around this anyway, fuck it!  “What -the-fuck-ever!” Sliding the half empty plate aside “Well, you wanna just get it out of the way now? Because I’m really not in the mood for-”
“Y/n..oh my god! Hi, honey how are you!? You look beautiful as always…” Suddenly there was a human, a human wearing the wrong shade of foundation kissing your cheek. A human by the name of Caroline, one of the local news anchors...clearly her damn ears were ringing.

You surely wouldn’t forget this night.
You had your hand pressing against the wound in your stomach, trying to stop the blood from coming out of your body. You were trying hard not to faint. The substances that Poison Ivy gave you were starting to make its effect and It didn’t feel good, because in a few minutes you’d be passed out in some random alley with no one there to help you.
Maybe this was the wrongest choice, going after a criminal all alone. Things escaped out of your control and here you are, but luckily you were able to run.
You felt weaker by the minute and your mind went straight to the only person that could help you now: Dick Grayson.
Although your past was filled with -not at all- bad meetings, never seen eye to eye in most occasions, and bitter words thrown against each other every time it was possible, it wasn’t a secret that you were also romantically involved and you both hated to admit it;
He was still the only hero you would trust to help you.
So you pushed your pride aside ready to knock on his door.

Dick was laying down on the couch of his new apartment relaxing after a long night, with only a jeans and no shirt, enjoying the loneliness that he used to like so much, as the rain poured outside the window, until he heard a unexpected pounding on his door.
Who would dare to interrupting his moment? Fuck. He cursed under his breath and opened the door ready to kick whoever it was out.
The person standing in front of him, leaning into the wall, with blood tainting her suit made his words die down in his throat when he looked at her face.
“I didn’t know...” Shivering from the cold air of san francisco, you coughed blood as you used all your strength to finish your line
“where else to go” your vision goes blank as your body collapses, Dick was able to catch you before you could hit the ground. The brown haired guy carried you bridal style after closing the door with his foot.
Dick put you on his bed, looking for any signs or injuries.
“What happen to you, Y/LN?”
“I’m fine, Dick” you stupidly tried to speak
“Don’t tell me you’re fine, I can see the blood”
He firmly said looking into in your eyes, which looked so different now. Scared and slightly dazed.
There wasn’t the usual shine and the confidence that always made him tremble every time you would look at him deeply when he tried to resist you.
By your look, he could tell you’ve been drugged and for a moment he wanted to find the one who did it to you and kill them. But now all he had to do, was take care of you.
“I need you to keep pressure on the wound, okay?”
Dick said and covered you with a warm blanket as he went to find some painkillers, tissues and a bowl with water to clean up your body.
“Here, let me help you” The man said gently trying to remove your suit to see your wounds and clean them as you tried to lift your arms, helping him.
You groaned in pain when your suit was being completely removed. You were only in your underwears.
“I’m sorry” He said nervously apologizing. “I need to clean the blood or i won’t be able to stitch the wound” you nodded at him as saying it was okay and he could keep going.
With the wet rag, Dick cleaned the blood on your face and followed down through your neck, carefully directing to the wound on your belly. It was so painful that your body contracted itself with no warning.
"Where did you get yourself into, Y/LN?"
He shook his head, trying to understand how you ended up like this. Bloodied, hurt, scared.
By cleaning around the wound he saw it wasn't so deep. It was clearly made with a knife and whoever did that, wanted to hurt you for real. He finished suturing your injury and covering you with the blanket again.
"Don’t let them in, Dick, They'll try to get me here" you said writhing in pain.
"You're safe with me, y/n, If they ever try to get to you again, they're dead." he said completely convinced that he would end anyone who dared to do this to you again.
“Here, they’re going to help you with the pain. You may feel sleepy” he told you handing you some pills and a cup of water. You took it and he got up.
“Where are you going?” you said trying to get up. The last thing you wanted to feel this night, was lonely.
“I was just going to throw this bloodied water in the sink.”
“Stay here. Please." You needed him, and you needed him by your side
He was going to say something, but he gave up when he realized what was going on, you weren’t the type of woman who would beg him to stay at any point, but it was more than just leaving the little fights in the past for now, it was you showing him that you needed to feel protected. By him
So he laid by your side, the cold air of San Francisco didn’t let you hide your trembling lips from the chill, so after joining into the blanket, Dick took off his shirt, giving it to you.
“Could you..?” you asked him to put it on you since you felt completely incapable of doing it without feeling pain.
He smiled weakly. He wouldn’t forget how polite you were this night, it was awkward but he couldn’t complain, he would just enjoy.
He put the shirt on you and you both settled in bed facing each other. He watched you give in to sleep as your eyes slowly closed still looking at his face.
“You can sleep now. I’m here” he said trying to comfort you
It wasn’t Nightwing and Y/SH/N switching mean words at each other tonight. It was only Dick Grayson and Y/n Y/Ln trusting each other to life and death.

Pain. That was what you received as a good morning from the universe. The memories of last night started to come anew in your head. Poison Ivy. Knife. Substances. More pain. Dick.
You opened your eyes as your brain couldn’t process it all and the image in front of you made it all disappear. What took your mind was the feeling of peace. It was rare seeing this man so peaceful like this so you smiled to yourself before you tried to get up from the bed.
Your wound instantly ached and you lift Dick’s shirt to see the sutured and cleaned injury, he took care of you so well. You owned a lot to him, not that he needed to know about any of it.
You got up with much effort trying not to wake him up. You needed a shower, so you took off the shirt -which carried his scent and it was so good to smell-.
You heard him move in the bed and turned to see him staring at you in your underwear.
“Enjoying the view, Grayson?” you mocked him smiling.
“I see that you recovered your arrogance back, right?” He said before yawning. “What are you doing anyway?”
“I was actually going to sneak out in silence, ya know?” you lied and he realized.
“Would you stay if i made you some pancakes?” even though he knew you were trying to fool him, he suborned you. It was his time to ask you to stay. In his own particular way.
“Yeah. I wouldn't say no to pancakes.” You nodded.
He smiled and got up, handing you his shirt again and you both went to the kitchen.

He was cleaning your stitches and placing new bandages to the wound.
“Why are you being so gentle with me, Grayson? I don’t deserve it, i’ve been an ass to you for as long as I remember.” you asked looking down at him.
“You’re right. But i have a feeling that you would do the exact same for me.” he said looking at you this time and it made you shy, so you put your head down, knowing he was right.
“Why did you come here? Why did you come for me?” He asked when he finished what he was doing.
“I didn’t know where else to go.”
“Don’t lie to me, Yn. Not after last night.” he said in a serious tone and it got your attention.
“You saw me in my weakest state, Dick. C’mon.”
“Hey” he came closer putting one of his hands in your cheek. Your looks were locked in each other. “It’s not about this. I don’t want this anymore.”
“I came here because after everything, you were the only I could trust my life.” You said. "This is the harshest truth."
“Good, because I feel the same about you.” He said now switching his look between your eyes and your lips, so you kissed him. A hurtful and desirable kiss.
“You have to promise me that you won’t fall in love with me.” you told him when he parted the kiss and had his hand still in your hot cheek.
“I could never, you’re incredibly annoying and stubborn.”

Another important part of their education is helping out around the village wherever they can. The reason for this is that it encourages the child to form stronger bonds with the people they’re training to protect. The stronger the interpersonal bonds they have, the better they’re able to resist the Nameless King’s lure.

Should the worst happen, the Marked’s mentor loses considerable face in the village. Village elders have stepped down because of circumstances like these. Marked mentors often pay restitution to their student’s family and that of their hostage. 
But, should the newly Marked come through that week having adjusted to their new reality successfully, they take on their full duties as the village’s defender and the cycle begins anew.
Most Marked succumb to the lure eventually, as their will erodes over time and the bitterness of living in a continent so dead set against life itself builds up inside them. The villages they live in know this and are careful to treat the Marked with utmost respect and do their damnedest to stay out of disputes with them, lest they end up becoming a sacrifice. This can end up breeding a whole different type of resentment which well trained Marked are coached to avoid. 
Some Marked see their death in Arouraíos Póli as their destiny and plan ahead for it. Some, instead of a person, take a thing which has wronged them and symbolically “kill” it in the inner sanctum. A faulty weapon which caused the death of a loved one. The parasite which destroyed a harvest. The fortune which caused a bitter family dispute. One man cut off the fingers of his marked hand which had failed to defend his village from the plague of biting insects that killed many of his charges.
But how are all these stories known, if Arouraíos Póli is the place the Marked go to die? 
Because these are the ones who came back. When the ritual is complete and the Marked still lives, the compulsion ends, its conditions fulfilled. 
Only those who are strong enough to destroy the parts of themselves that hold them back are able to return.
On Temporary Marks
Anyone with a stick of charcoal or a pot of ink can mark themselves with the greatest of ease. As far as power is concerned, the material with which one draws on their hand makes no difference. Mud works just as well as painstakingly drawn tattoos. 
The difference is that when the mark is washed away, so too are the powers lost. A common thought is that a village in danger might be better served by having multiple Marked on hand who are able to wash away their powers once the danger is passed.

Not all of them are bunk. In 1799, a group of woodsmen from New Cullero found themselves lost in the depths in the jungle for weeks. When things became dire, they chose the one man whose will had not yet broken to mark himself. He was able to tap into the mycelium network and find the path that would lead them out. He reportedly suffered no ill effects before or after the mark was washed away.
The lesson here is that some people, without training, if the matrix of their personality is one capable of overpowering the compulsion of the Nameless King, are perfectly able to wield the mark for a short while. 
But the stories concerning an unprepared Marked murdering their rival, themselves and the village the resulting plague of rats overtook are by far the more numerous of the two.

In this episode which is very timely right now, we focus on some really relevant topics like dealing with feelings of stress, isolation, loneliness, overwhelm, uncertainty, also things like navigating ADD and ADHD in our kids. And now for many of us who are also serving as teachers for our kids during these unusual times, as well as things like PTSD, depression, anxiety, and many other topics. Because I’m here with Dr. David Rabin who is a board-certified psychiatrist, a translational neuroscientist, an inventor, and an entrepreneur who specializes in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, and who is doing research right now currently on a device called the Apollo, specifically for ADD and ADHD. Dr. Rabin developed the Apollo which is a breakthrough wearable technology that uses the neuroscience of touch and vibration to combat the negative effects of stress. During his research at the University of Pittsburgh, he developed this. And it’s a device that I personally use and really love and notice a big difference from. And they are in the middle of doing studies on this with like I said kids with ADD and ADHD. It’s a really incredible technology.
Dr. Rabin is also helping to organize the world’s largest controlled study of psychedelic medicines in collaboration with colleagues at Yale, the University of Southern California, Mt. Sinai, and MAPS, which is the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies to determine the mechanisms of the dramatic therapeutic benefits observed following psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in treatment resistant mental illness. He is one of the most intelligent incredible experts I’ve ever talked to on a lot of these topics, and he does not disappoint in this episode. We go deep on a lot of these topics, and I think you will really enjoy as much as I enjoyed recording it. So without further ado, let’s join Dr. David Rabin.
Dr. Rabin, welcome. Thank you for being on the podcast again.
Dr. Rabin: Thank you so much for having me, Katie. It’s a pleasure as always.
Katie: Well, I’m excited to chat with you again. I’m a huge fan of your work. And our first episode got a great response. And I think there’s so much more that we can add in this second episode. I think to start, obviously, all of us are kind of learning to navigate a lot of new uncertainties right now and things that a few months ago we didn’t have to deal with. And so, I would guess that people are under a lot more stress and uncertainty than normal. And so, I’d love for that to start…let’s start broad there and talk about some of these kind of changing turbulent times and ways that we can navigate that stress.
Dr. Rabin: I think that’s a great place to start. I think that we are under, you know, particularly high amounts of stress right now on a daily basis, different than maybe what we’re used to, but still very stressful nonetheless. And, you know, I think you really hit on it, which is that one of the major things that drive stress for us is sort of grappling with uncertainty. And one of the interesting things about that that I talk about with my clients all the time and that was on sort of my own personal journey as well, was learning to not spend a lot of time trying to control things that are completely uncertain and sort of out of my hands because what we realized from the theory of how anxiety management is taught and mental health and as a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist and a neuroscientist, we studied this a lot.
And what we see is that one of the central, most important things to always remember about anxiety, and anxiety being sort of these negative intrusive thoughts, constant worry, feeling overwhelmed and restless all the time, that stems from trying to spend as…you know, are basically allocating energy and resources of our attention, which we only have so much attention. We spend more of those resources thinking about things we cannot control than thinking about things that we can control. And ultimately, the more percentage of our attention we spend on thinking about things that we can control, like our breath, like making ourselves healthy, you know, having meaningful interactions with loved ones and things of that nature. Those things all contribute to us feeling less anxious and more positive on a mood level and also improve our energy and our ability to sleep, and sort of that, you know, creates what we call like reverberations throughout other parts of our lives where our bodies just start to recover better because we’re not spending that time thinking about all the things that are out of our hands.
And so, that is one of the most important things that I think we can all use in this time, myself included. And this something that I have to remind myself of on a daily basis, particularly when things are very busy but over time as we practice techniques like this, like learning to put our attention, which is something that’s really valuable, you know, our attention is something that only certain things deserve our attention. And when we spend our attention giving it a priority to things that really deserve it, like self-healing techniques, self-breath, you know, what we put into our bodies, how we exercise, you know, how we heal ourselves, all of these kinds of things, who we choose to spend valuable, meaningful time with, all of those things start to create these really positive feedback loops that contribute to a sense of happiness and fulfillment in our lives, even at our most stressed out, and overwhelming times.
Katie: That makes sense. And I know, obviously you would know this much better than I would, but from what I’ve read in books and different studies, a couple of the more difficult things to wrestle with from a stress perspective mentally are uncertainty and also loneliness. Like isolation is a really big mental stressor from what I’ve read. In fact, I’ve heard it compared to the physical effects even compared to being a smoker with how much of an effect it can have on the body. And so, there are a lot of people who are in isolation much more than normal and certainly navigating uncertainty much more than normal. Are there any strategies we can use from home that can help with the physical and the mental ramifications of that?
Dr. Rabin: Absolutely. I’m so glad you brought that up because I think that’s something that we often don’t talk about enough. And I think the first place to start is there is a fundamental difference between loneliness and then the concept of loneliness and being alone. And the way that we describe being alone, which is where most of us are. Most of us are alone, physically alone. You know, we don’t necessarily, when we’re isolated and we don’t have loved ones around or our family and friends, we don’t necessarily…we don’t have those people right around us physically, so we’re alone by, you know, by definition or our description of our environment. But we are not necessarily lonely. And I think loneliness starts to tap into this other meaning or connotation of feeling like we are, you know, not necessarily loved or that we may not get love or affection the way we need it.
And not only do we not have it right now, but we also may not get it in the future and we don’t know when we’re going to get it. And I think the reason that’s so important to understand the difference between being alone and feeling lonely or being lonely or lonely person is that being alone is something that is actually very powerful for us in the way that we heal ourselves. Oftentimes, it’s very difficult for us to start making changes to our routine. And like we were mentioning earlier and we talked about in the last podcast that we did together, you know, some of these self-healing techniques like, you know, positive…you know, everyone talks about diet and exercise, which are obviously very important, but there’s other things that are really important that we don’t talk about enough.
Like introspection, looking into ourselves, gratitude, feeling grateful for being able to breathe, being able to control the way that we think about ourselves and about our bodies. Being able to feel our heartbeat to, you know, be able to do progressive, take time to do progressive muscle relaxation to self-massage, right? There are certain parts of the body like putting pressure on our chest and put it with one hand or putting pressure on the inside of the outside of the ear. All of these things are very gentle ways that can pretty quickly improve the sense of calm in the body that can help induce a sense of safety and recovery response. And so, I think that, you know, what’s really important is that if we look at being alone as always being equal to lonely, then we’re missing out on a lot of the opportunity.
That being alone affords us to start to work on ourselves without the influence other people around. And oftentimes it’s easier to change ourselves and to change our behavior, to learn how to adapt, to learn new techniques, new skills when we’re alone actually than it is when we’re with others. And so, being alone can actually be looked at as a challenge to overcome that when we do overcome that challenge, as we are all able to do, we’re all adapters. We’re incredibly adaptive creatures and that’s what makes us human. And that is why we are at the top of the earth food chain, if you will. And so effectively, by approaching being alone as a challenge that we can overcome, then as we start to do things that help us feel better in that state of being alone, then we start to recognize that we are growing from that experience rather than that experience bringing us down or making us less, or actually that challenge forces us to become stronger and better versions of ourselves.
And so, and this is also similar to what we talk about in the psychotherapy space obviously, but also in the psychedelic medicine, assisted psychotherapy healing space, and also in a lot of Eastern and tribal medicine practices that have been used for thousands of years for chronic illness and mental health. I would argue that loneliness is a problem, but loneliness can be what we call reframed as the challenge of overcoming being alone. And that challenge allows us all of these opportunities to start to work on ourselves in ways that we might not have thought of before. And again, you don’t have to look at my work. But there’s tons of other people out there that have done this work, and there’s wonderful meditation techniques and wonderful breathwork techniques in particular, that are really, really helpful to practice. I think above all though, gratitude, which is one of the hardest and most powerful techniques, if you’ve never done it, it is also the most important. And by practicing gratitude, starting with being grateful for being alone, that automatically changes the way that we look at being alone. And we start to separate what being alone is from being lonely. And we separate that from our identity, and that all of a sudden sets us on a path towards feeling like a hell of a lot better.
Katie: I’m so glad you brought up gratitude because I think, you know, this is something that’s talked about in a lot of self-help circles. We hear about it on a lot of, you know, podcasts. It’s been a big topic in books recently and I think it still often gets discounted because people think like it can’t make that big of a difference or like, “Yeah, I should be grateful and optimistic, but also I really need to fix this problem.” And they don’t realize just how profoundly slowly shifting your mindset toward gratitude can be. And like, I’m sure there are studies, and you could speak to this much better than I could, but how that actually manifest itself in psychological changes over time. Are there any other practical strategies that you would give for making that shift? Because I know it can seem overwhelming. If you’re not in that place, the idea of trying to get into a place of gratitude can seem like an uphill battle for sure.
Dr. Rabin: Yeah. So, I think there are a number of techniques. My favorite techniques are actually…and I think we’ve talked about this before. There’s two sets of techniques. I don’t want to overcomplicate it, but these are all sort of thinking and emotional techniques. And I really like these because I use them with everyone and myself and they’re incredibly effective. They’re very old techniques that go all the way back into Eastern medicine that had been used for thousands of years. And I think why they’ve stood the test of time is because they work so well and they’re also free. And so I think gratitude is one of the major foundations of all of these techniques because gratitude is the way that we start to look at a situation or an experience from the “why me” perspective, or the, “Oh God, please make it stop” perspective, to the, “Okay, if I’m grateful for this experience, what could I possibly get out of it that’s positive or constructive along the line of growth?”
And so that is why gratitude is sort of at the foundation. One of the things that I think is the most helpful to think about with gratitude is with anger. When we get angry, we often think of anger as being a very destructive, negative emotion. But anger is just a signal that there’s something off in our environment or something off in us that needs to be worked on. It’s a signal. All emotions are signals in different ways. It’s just easier to feel grateful for joy than it is to feel grateful for sadness or anger. The problem is when we don’t practice gratitude for things like anger and sadness instead of actually working through the anger and the sadness and figuring out what the source of it is, what happens is we oftentimes turn that anger or sadness inward on ourselves and then we start to feel a lot of the stress that goes along with, you know, harboring anger and sadness, like resentment, depression, sleep disturbances, all of these things.
And so, you know, starting to practice gratitude on a moment-to-moment basis as often as we can really, from the moment we wake up to the moment we go to bed, which can just be as simple as first thing in the morning, write down gratitude, and then just try to think about things that you’re grateful for, even if it’s just being grateful for waking up or being grateful for being able to take a breath. Any of those being a grateful for being able to eat breakfast, any of those things are fantastic ways to start. And then the same before you go to bed and eventually that becomes automatic. I think why that’s important is because gratitude forms this foundation of trust in ourselves that is supported by these four principles called the four pillars. And these are the very old principals that’ve been around for a long time.
And so, it starts with gratitude. And then from gratitude goes to forgiveness, which is really focused on self-forgiveness, forgiving ourselves for mistakes that we’ve made, knowing that we all make mistakes. There’s not a single human on the face of the earth that has not made mistakes. And that when we start to understand that, then we’re able to forgive ourselves for those mistakes. Recognizing that those are opportunities for growth. And then the next step above that is compassion. Compassion is often difficult to understand with respect to ourselves. But I think that the most common, best way to think about it as compassion is like patience for ourselves and patience for the world to allow things to unfold as they will. We often think when we look at the world, we look at ourselves and say, “Why aren’t we here? We’re here but we want to be there. Why can’t I be there right now? Why is this not already moving along the way that I…on the timeline that I expect it to?”
And so, that forces us to rush the process, which actually leads us to make more mistakes. Trying to avoid failure, we rush the process, we make more mistakes, we want things to happen faster. Compassion is that practice of allowing things to unfold as they will and just doing the best we can but understanding that we will make mistakes. Things will come up, you know, and we’re just going to do the best we can knowing that things will come up and things will unfold as they will. And then all this sort of comes together and culminates in the practice of self-love. And over time, as we practice those four pillars, that forms the foundation of trust in ourselves that allows us to overcome very, very difficult times like we’re in right now.
Like loneliness or feelings of loneliness, feelings of consistent anger or whatever it might be that’s bothering us. These four free tools are incredible tools that help us to…and they support each other and it can be practiced at the same time. They don’t have to be independent and they work together to help support that. And I think that there’s the other four, and a lot of these coming fours, which is interesting. The other four tools that are a little bit more obvious about how to practice are called the four agreements, which are the four agreements we make with ourselves to ensure a fulfilling life that’s aligned with growth and healing. And the four agreements are always do your best, which we just talked about. Don’t take anything personally. Don’t make expectations, and always be true to your word.
And these things are sometimes difficult. We all know that we’re good at some of those and not so good at others. But these serve as guidelines that when you make an agreement with yourself intentionally and say, “I intend to follow these agreements for myself,” then what happens is the change starts to happen on its own over time. And so, it’s about starting to change the way that we focus our attention and the way that we think about ourselves starts to change the way that other people think about us. And it starts to change the way that we feel. And it can happen in as short as a day or as long as a few weeks. But the point is that as we start to practice these techniques, then the sooner we practice and the more we practice, the more we actually literally retrain our neural pathways in our brain to, instead of feeling upset and angry ourselves every time we feel sad or every time something bad happens, we start to actually feel joy at the opportunity that that challenge presents for us to grow and get better. And it literally shifts the entire neural networks that support the way that we see the world.
Kate: I love that. I’m a big fan of the four agreements as well. And I think you’re right. I think that the shift and focus is so important. And to get vulnerable from it and I can share from my own life. An example of that, when all the shutdowns first started happening that first week, I found that I was like almost completely unable to eat. I was extremely angry. I was working out four times a day and I had this like weird…like I wanted to fight and I had no idea where that was coming from. I ended up exploring it with the therapist and realized that it went back to sexual trauma I had much earlier in life, in high school. And basically what I had done is I had built frameworks to keep me safe so that I would never feel helpless again in any area of life.
So, I had things in relationships that I did to feel safe. I had ways to protect myself physically. So, I felt safe. Like I had systems for everything. So, I never had to feel helpless because that emotion was so devastating in that moment that I never wanted to feel helpless again. And I had spent years processing that trauma and had not been triggered in a long time. I thought I had totally gotten through it. And it wasn’t until there was something much bigger than me that I could not do anything about that it re-triggered that helplessness and that anger. And it really caught me by surprise because I thought I had completely dealt with it. And like you said, that anger can always be a clue as to kind of something that’s going on. And so, I had to like really consciously shift my focus those first couple of weeks.
A, to realize what was going on. And then to shift into gratitude and focusing on the things I did have control over, which was I can spend more time with my kids, I can spend time outside, I can focus on the positive, I can make time for gratitude and movement. But it was a hard thing and I think a lot of people are facing varying degrees of that kind of mental thing to work through right now. And it is difficult. But I think also like to your point, if we make good use of this time and we focus on the positive, we could emerge from this with incredible habits and a focus on gratitude and things like maybe slowing down normal life a little bit, not doing so many activities, spending more time with family, making time for cooking at home more or gardening or, you know, so many of these things that we’re doing now that we maybe didn’t do before that I love that. I love the practical focus on making that a habit because I think it really does have a dramatic impact over time.
Dr. Rabin: Absolutely. And I’m so grateful that you were willing to share that personal story with us. I think that your experience of what you just described is such a powerful metaphor for what we all go through when we have…we’ve all had times in our lives that we may not even remember as traumatizing, consciously, we may not even be aware, but there were always times in our lives for pretty much all of us where we felt out of control and we felt, you know, like we didn’t know what was going to happen and it was extraordinarily scary or threatening. We’ve all been in those kinds of situations and I think that what we often do is we build up these things called protectors, which you very well described. We use these a lot in MDMA assisted psychotherapy and psychedelic psychotherapy where we help people work through and understand, “Hey, this is something that you did when you were a child or when you were a teenager to learn how to cope with this tremendous amount of stress without any one showing you or teaching you how to deal with these emotions.”
So, now you have protectors, you have what we call sometimes firefighters, which might be anger or resentment or these kinds of things of this nature that come out every time we are reminded of that feeling of vulnerability, that feeling of losing control, that feeling of losing hope or losing safety. And what happens is that we forget that we actually are the single most important…the single most important source of safety in our lives comes from within us. You know, we are taught often to believe that it comes from outside of us. And that the source of wellbeing and that our source of healing and health and all of these things comes from outside of us. But that’s actually not true. And that the single biggest source of our health comes from within us and our happiness comes from within us.
And so, when we learn as you have to, and you described it so well, to generate that safety from yourself, that by changing your habits, by changing what you spend your attention and your time on, I mean that is literally life-changing. It’s literally what people are banging on the doors for to get access to psychedelic medicine because psychedelic medicine, in a lot of ways, it’s like a catalyst to rapidly accelerate that process. That is a process that we’re all capable of achieving on our own. As you said, it just takes a lot of time and a lot of work. And without the proper guidance or the proper teaching or the mentorship or the therapist or, you know, whoever it is that we need us to help, you know, at least get us on the right path to recognize this as possible, then we forget.
You know, it doesn’t mean we can’t do it. It just means we’ve forgotten that that ability we have is there. And so, that’s why it’s always such a pleasure and a privilege to be able to have these conversations with you because we really…I mean, we just get down to the raw nitty-gritty of it. I think that when you listen to…when people listen to something like this, they have the opportunity to hear about what actually is possible for all of us, that we do have the capacity, all of us who are listening to this, all of us who hear these kinds of conversations have the capacity to remember that we can heal ourselves and then to take some of these lessons back into their lives so that by the time all of this is…we’re moved on to the next phase of all of this in our lives, in the world, we can emerge so much stronger, so much healthier and so much happier and ready to take on whatever comes next. Not in a weakened, vulnerable state.
Katie: Exactly. And I’m so glad that you brought up psychedelic-assisted therapy. I know we talked about this a little bit in our first episode, which I’ll make sure is linked in the show notes at wellnessmama.fm. But as I would suspect, there’s going to be probably a lot of people who have resurgence of maybe trauma or addiction issues or all kinds of things following this crisis. I’d love to hear an update on what we’re seeing in like right now in medical research with psychedelic-assisted research and therapy, and what you expect to see in the coming months and years, because I think that can be really profound for so many people.
Dr. Rabin: Yeah, it’s a huge topic of interest right now. I think that, unfortunately, as a lot of the studies of MDMA and psilocybin require a lot of in-person visits. Many of those studies are on pause at this time. But the results are incredible for…particularly with psilocybin, which is the active psychedelic ingredient in mushrooms. And then MDMA, which originally comes from sassafras but is derived chemically, and then slightly modified to provide a very powerful empathy and self-acceptance, you know, non-nonjudgmental experience that is radically healing for people with trauma, which is most of us. And so, I think that, you know, these medicines are absolutely coming up.
They will be available. It looks like, you know, sometime between like 2021 and 2023, clients, patients will be able to go in and actually find a physician or a psychotherapist who works with a physician to provide these treatments. And it’s already starting. You know, there’s already a study…right now it’s mostly through studies, but you can actually sign up for a study at Hopkins, MAPS, the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies runs studies on these medicines. And so, it’s possible to get involved. It’s just difficult right now for most people. And the medicines are expensive and it just requires a lot of effort and dedication to the cause, to the protocol. I think what’s really interesting that’s on the horizon right now is ketamine-assisted psychotherapy because ketamine is a molecule that was discovered in the early mid-20th century.
It was used as an anesthetic and a horse tranquilizer because it’s a very, very gentle anesthetic. But it was found later to actually induce very powerful psychedelic states. And when I say psychedelic, you know, I don’t mean a crazy ’70s dance party, but more a mind-manifesting state. So, the root of the word psychedelic means mind-manifesting. And what this really means is creating an altered state of consciousness, which you can also create with meditation or with breathwork or with, you know, yoga or a lot of other different techniques. But with medicine, it’s like ketamine or like MDMA or psilocybin. It’s a chemical induction of that state. And what ketamine does is it induces that state for about half an hour to an hour in a very safe way. And it allows people to be able to access that state for a very brief amount of time, but it’s enough time to be able to start to do some really interesting work on ourselves.
And so, one of the pioneers of this treatment was Dr. Phil Wilson, who still has a practice in San Anselmo and the San Francisco Bay Area. And he is pioneering this treatment for lots of different approaches, but its main focus is post-traumatic stress disorder and predominantly treatment-resistant depression. And I think what’s so interesting about ketamine above all the other psychedelics is that, is it particularly interesting? It’s interesting, but it’s not that much more interesting than the others. I think what makes it interesting right now is that it’s legal in basically…it’s legal in every state and in almost every country worldwide. And this is incredible because there isn’t any other psychedelic medicine that is legal in every state and every country or almost every country worldwide. So, that creates an enormous opportunity when we already have this technique that can be delivered in person.
Ketamine is also interesting. It can be delivered over the phone or over like a video conference. And people have been doing that for some time very successfully and very safely with some training. And we actually provide this treatment now which is very exciting. And so, there are all these opportunities coming up with medicines like ketamine where people who have very severe symptoms are people who are really struggling with trauma or depression I think is the main two. And there are other things that can help as well, but those two, in particular, can have dramatic benefit from use of this medicine. You know, and they don’t need it…you don’t take it every day. You take it, you know, once every week, once every couple of weeks with a therapist and then you have frequent communication with your therapist before and after, which helps set what we call the set and setting or the intention of the experience and what you hope to get out of it to make it as powerful and meaningful of a healing experience as possible.
So, while we wait for things like silicide and mushrooms and, and MDMA and some of these other very powerful medicines to get through the trials, ketamine thankfully is actually available right now and I think this is going to be a total game-changer for the way that we provide mental health via telemedicine, via remote, you know, remote mental health care and remote therapy over the next several months, especially while we’re under quarantine right now.
Katie: Yeah, I think you’re right. And I’ll make sure the links to find out more about that are in the show notes for anyone who really wants to look into that and to try it more. I know a couple of people I know personally have done ketamine assisted therapy for depression and for other things and had profound results from it. Can you go a little deeper on explaining how…because I think obviously there’s still some stigma surrounding anything in the psychedelic world with certain people. Can you explain how these enables such drastic results even for people who have treatment-resistant forms of these or like, I know people who don’t respond well to talk therapy have seen incredible results from psychedelic-assisted talk therapy. Can you just kind of explain what’s happening that allows that to be so much more effective?
Dr. Rabin: Sure. Again, so going back to what we were talking about earlier, safety is the most critical factor of all of this. Safety is what allows our nervous system that’s responsible for healing to really engage in full force. And this goes back millions of years, hundreds of millions of years actually. And Eric Kandel, who won the Nobel prize in 2002 for discovering the origins of learning and memory, found that we actually learn in our complex brains, you know, a hundred billion neurons or so, our brains learn in fundamentally the same way that 300 million year old sea snail brains learn and they only have 3 neurons in their brains. And the way that they learn is that they increase connections when they’re exposed to intense, meaningful, threatening or safe experiences, they increase the amount of and the strength of those neural connections over time, and we do exactly the same thing.
So, as we practice, and I think the main thing to take home about this is that what our moms always said or what our dads always said, practice makes perfect. This is actually real. It is literally reflected all the way down in our neurobiology to the way that our neurons talk to each other and possibly all the way down to our DNA and the way that our genes are expressed epigenetically in terms of stress and reward response genes. But going back to the way that these medicines work ultimately, that if you think about it, when we are stressed out all the time, when we’re constantly in a fear or threatened state or we just…it doesn���t have to be actual threat, doesn’t have to be actual survival threat. It could just be that we perceive something to be threatening us, like our coworker looking at us funny across the table, or traffic on the road, or our kids or family or friends screaming in the house, or whatever it might be.
You know, all of these things set…our body doesn’t know the difference between that and a survival threat. So, the body responds in the same way. It jacks up heart rate. It jacks up blood pressure, jacks up respiratory rate. It increases blood flow to the muscles, to the fear center of the brain, and to the parts of our brain that are responsible for just getting us out of that situation or fighting that situation or freezing in that so you’re playing dead. And this is what all the animals do, right? This is what we’ve been taught for a long time, evolutionarily. What I think we forget oftentimes is that when that survival system gets all of the diverted to it, because we perceive threat, it gets stronger and tighter and the connections get tighter between certain things in our environment and that threat response and the nerve connections actually get stronger, the neuronal connections get stronger.
And so, what happens is that every time you’re exposed to threat, it’s more likely you’re going to have a survival like response. And it’s less likely that you’re going to calm down quickly and recognize, “Hey, wait a minute, maybe this email is not threatening. Maybe this traffic is not actually out to get me. It’s just the way it is today because I left work too late, you know. And that’s how it is.” So, ultimately the problem with that is that on a neurological level, when we train our brains and our bodies to be in a threatened state all the time, what happens is that’s diverting resources away from our parasympathetic nervous system that is literally responsible for all of our rest and recovery. All of our digestion, all of our immunity, literally managing our immune response so that our immune system is working at its peak level.
Managing our creativity and diverting resources to that, our decision making, all of those things that we care about, being empathic, and caring with our loved ones. Being present with our children and our loved ones, all of these things require the recovery system to turn on, which requires safety. And so, as we retrain our brains with safety techniques, whether that’s gratitude or whether it’s soothing touch from ourselves or a loved one, or whether it’s any number of meditation, deep breathing, the other things we’ve talked about, as we retrain our brains down that path, those networks get stronger. And then we actually become better at recovering and better performing rather than just performing under stress, which means that we’re not recovering enough on a regular basis. So, the reason why psychedelic medicines can be so useful and things like Apollo, which also work in a very similar way, is that when psychedelic medicines are introduced in the proper way with a very safe therapeutic context, what happens is that the safety gets amplified dramatically.
That safety reminds us that we don’t have to be afraid or threatened right now and that we don’t actually have an immediate survival threat around us right now. And so, it’s reminding us that we can start to divert resources like blood, oxygen, energy in general to our recovery response system and allow some of the healing parts to turn on. It serves as a catalyst or an accelerant to speed up that process, which is a process that we activate and train in psychotherapy. That’s sort of the main idea of psychotherapy. Oftentimes, unfortunately, psychotherapy isn’t performed properly for the person who’s receiving it or there’s a, you know, a so-so between the person receiving the psychotherapy and the therapist, usually a lack of trust. And that trust is absolutely essential for us to feel safe. And if we don’t have it, then we, again, don’t allow our healing response to turn on. So, psychedelic medicines kind of provide that little chemical boost that stimulates the brain in a way that amplifies the safety of the therapeutic experience when we have a good therapeutic experience, which is the foundation of a good psychedelic healing experience. And then that literally fast tracks the retraining of those neural networks along a pathway of safety and recovery and away from unwanted stress response. Does that make sense?
Katie: Yeah, it absolutely does. And it puts in perspective why that can be so effective compared to just having talked through something. And I’ve definitely seen that in my own life. I’ve tried various forms with psychedelics as well, and those were really helpful to me in working through my own trauma. So, I can speak first hand to that.

Another area that I know you’ve done a lot of research on it and that specifically we can talk about Apollo in is the area of ADD and ADHD. And I think this is especially important right now as well because a lot of moms and a lot of listeners found themselves overnight becoming homeschool teachers and home with their kids much more. And so, I’ve heard from a lot of moms who are now navigating, “How do I actually be both the parent and the teacher for a child with ADD or ADHD? And how do I adapt a home learning environment to these specific needs?” And I know that you’ve done a lot of research and study in those areas, so we’d love to hear what’s happening right now. I know you’ve been doing trials with the Apollo in this specifically, so, what are you finding right now that’s helpful?
Dr. Rabin: So, this is a great, great segue, I think. So, for those who don’t know what Apollo is, you can check it out on apolloneuro.com, apolloneuro.com or apolloneuroscience.com. And this is a wearable technology that was developed based on all the research that we’re talking about now today. It was developed by myself and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh. And it is a wearable that delivers very gentle frequencies of vibration to the skin that you can wear on your ankle or your wrist. But it works basically anywhere on the body and these specific vibration patterns that are very gentle, that kind of feel like an ocean wave or like a hug or somebody holding your hand are specifically developed and from our research in the lab to activate the safety response in the body and to activate the recovery nervous system instead of the stress response system.
And when you activate that recovery response system by sending safety signals to the body or basically vibrations that are interpreted by our brains as safe, just like someone you love holding your hand on a bad day, it helps remind us that we are actually not under threat in that moment and that we are actually in control of our decisions in that moment. We have the opportunity, that tunnel vision starts to fade and you have the opportunity to make maybe a different choice than you’ve made the last 1,000 or 10,000 times you’ve been in this situation. And so what’s really interesting about ADD and ADHD, in particular, is that this is a huge problem in our society. Why? There’s lots of reasons, I think, but one of which in particular is that a lot of us don’t remember what it’s like to be children, right? We forget that as a child, you know, it’s a bit confusing at times in the adult world, you know, there’s all this chaos and all this stuff going on around us.
And, you know, many of us feel completely out of control, particularly as we start to get into the adolescent years in high school, middle school. And we just start to feel completely out of control. And what happens is that when we feel as kids out of control, then our attention wanders, we get distracted and we literally will seek anything, anything that will help us feel calm in that moment. And usually, it’s something that’s distracted. So, the most common things that we see in kids with ADD or ADHD is they can’t focus on things that bore them or things that they’re not interested in for more than a minute or two at most. But as soon as you put them in front of a video game that they like, or something that’s constantly changing or an athletic activity or something like that, they’re incredible at it.
Sometimes they’re like the best at it. And so what’s really interesting is that that attention is not dysfunctional the way that we talk about it with the diagnosis of ADHD, it’s actually just different and it requires a little more training than the average bear. And it’s really at the source, the source of that distractibility, that’s the source of the attention deficit as we describe it in psychiatry, really seems to be more of feelings of out of control, feelings of lack of control, lack of being in control of our lives, lack of control of what we eat, you know, lack of being control of what we learn, what we do during the day, our schedule. As a kid, we don’t really have control over most of that. And so, what’s really interesting is that with Apollo, we thought when we made it that it would improve, that there would be certain frequencies that were vibration that reliably improved focus. And we tested this originally in a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled crossover study in healthy folks, adults, at the University of Pittsburgh. And the results were resoundingly good for focus.
We improved focusing cognitive performance on very stressful tasks by quite a bit. And that performance on those tasks increased directly proportionate to the amount that our recovery system turned on. So, the more that our recovery nervous system turned on as measured by clinically validated lab-grade technology like EKG machines and brainwave scans and all of these other things that we did, the more that that recovery system turned on, the more that focus and cognitive performance went up. And then we thought, “Okay, we have adult friends who have ADD and ADHD. What if we just gave them our prototype to try out? You know, it has no side effects, can’t hurt you. It’s just sound waves. So, let’s give it to them, try it out.” And I personally was one of those kids who was very bored and distractible as a child, and I think I would have been diagnosed with ADHD if anybody had put me in front of a psychiatrist at a young age.
And I use it all the time for focus. So, we started giving it out to our friends in the early prototype and they all loved it. It was resoundingly, everyone was like, “I don’t use my Adderall anymore. I don’t use my Ritalin anymore because I can use this.” And that blew me away. So, we started to work with a population of children at a clinic called the Children’s Integrated Center for Success in Allentown, PA, which is run by an incredible nurse practitioner, Amy Edgar, and she’s been working on basically helping to try to treat mental illnesses in particular in children without medicine or in the least invasive way, least risky way possible for many, many years. And our clinic is an incredibly well-run place that really focuses on kids’ safety first. But even with all of their incredible techniques, they still struggle with many kids, not…I mean, I think they have better results in a lot of other places, but they still have children that struggle and adolescents that struggle with symptoms of ADD and ADHD.
So, when I showed her Apollo for the first time, she loved it. She tried it herself, she tried it on her daughter, she loved it. And then she said, “I think that given how safe this is, clearly, I would like to try this in a pilot trial with our patients at the clinic who are treatment-resistant. These are kids who I’ve tried everything I can with them. And the only outcome that we have is that we had to go to medicine because we didn’t have any other luck with anything else.” And she started putting on these kids just in the clinic, in therapy, in front of the parents, in front of the therapist and they put it on, and within minutes they would see a change. The kind of change where the kids would sit up, they would start making eye contact instead of running around the room.
They would start smiling and they would say…they would start talking by themselves. They would start talking about their feelings, talking about their day, talking about things that they’ve had on their mind in ways that they have not spoken about to the therapist in years. Somebody as a therapist would work for hours and hours and hours just trying to get the child or the client to tell them anything. And, you know, a lot of kids are very closed off in these kinds of settings and they don’t want to talk and that’s understandable. And they don’t understand what’s going on a lot of the time. And again, it’s like, you know, it feels like they’re out of control. And they put this on and they just settle down and they realize they’re in a safe environment and they say, “This feels like a hug. And I want to talk about myself.”
And that was so incredible for us to, you know, to see those kinds of results in these kids. And ultimately, after the first 15 kids went through the original pilot, Amy put together an IRB approved clinical protocol, that is a standard protocol for, you know, rigorous scientific clinical trials that can be published. And now she’s running this trial in a much more rigorous fashion that will be published with, I think it’s 40 children and the first 15 have been run through it and they are seeing the same results consistently in these kids. And so, I think this is incredibly promising for us to be able to have alternatives for people where not only…I mean, it’s not only that we have a technology like Apollo that you can buy over the counter that can help, you know, improve something like this that we thought we required medicine for, but also for the kids to understand and for parents understand that there’s hope, that this is based on a theory of neuroscience, right? And neuroscience is psychology of learning and attention.
So, if Apollo was built on that theory and Apollo works this well, then that means that if we work with our children and we work with ourselves to train our own attention better, you know, to work with these techniques and to really learn these strategies, then, you know, we all have the ability to achieve this higher level of functioning that we want and that we all talk about we want, that we all often rely on medicine that we want because we feel we need to. We don’t need the medicine, the medicine is teaching us how to do it. Apollo is a tool teaching us how to do it. But again, going back to the point we were talking about earlier, all of this is pointing to the fact that we can do this on our own.
Katie: Wow, that’s so encouraging to hear. And I think you’re right that…had they tested for this when we were younger, I actually did testing as an adult, separate of just specifically testing for ADD and ADHD and found out I would clinically be diagnosed with ADHD, or I was technically by this test. But I thought it was really funny and I’m really grateful that they didn’t test me as a kid because I probably potentially could have been put on medication. I don’t know if they did that back then. But I think long-term it actually ended up being superpower of sorts. Because my parents gave me an opportunity to exist in a world where I was homeschooled for part of my adolescents and I had the opportunity to move around a lot to express creativity.
So, I didn’t face some of the same challenges that some kids, I’m sure, do in a school environment. But I’m really glad that get kind of managed out when I was young because I think learning from that has been an asset as an adult. So, I think it’s really important how you explain that, kind of reframing that to begin with. And then also using these non-invasive low-risk or no-risk tools that can help kids to focus and to like move through this without having to like to be medicated or to take some more of these extreme measures. That’s really encouraging to hear.
Dr. Rabin: And I think that’s, you know, that’s really what it comes down to is that, you know, had you or I been told when we were children that we had a disorder that required medication, then I’m not sure that you and I would have put in the effort to overcome that when we were given medicine and being told that if you take this medicine, all your problems will go away basically. You know, that is not consistent with healing. That’s like putting a band aid on a broken leg, you know, and the broken leg’s still broken. You might not feel pain as much, you know, but it’s still broken. It’s the same thing with mental and attention and emotional issues that all of us have dealt with at some time. I think as we look at them as challenges that we can overcome and grow from, then we start to learn how to use our own superpowers, as you said.
I think it’s the greatest way to put it. We’re learning or teaching ourselves by overcoming these challenges, how to activate our own superpowers to really become our fullest versions of ourselves. And I also, I think it’s important as a caveat to remind people that this is information for you but I am not your doctor. As much as I am a board-certified physician, I am not your doctor or your child’s doctor, so please don’t just discontinue medicine right away without speaking to your healthcare provider or your physician. That said, it is really important if you’re going to take home anything from this, I think please take home the idea that there absolutely without a doubt is scientific evidence for hope that we can all heal from these things. And that 99% of the people who have ADHD or ADD, 99% of people with these kinds of diagnoses, even things like depression and anxiety are not chronic illnesses that never get better.
On the contrary, they are chronic illnesses that can absolutely get better. And the single biggest factor in whether they get better or not is whether or not we believe that we can do anything about it. Once we start to believe that we can do something about it, then we start to put attention and energy into building those skill sets and figuring out how to overcome those challenges on our own and to learn as much as we can from those experiences so that we work in the…you know, we grow in the direction that we are hoping to.
Katie: Such a great point. And I’ll say also from my personal experience, I’m a big fan of the Apollo and I use it all the time and it really does help with focus. But also for me, there’s one called social and openness setting and I’ve had a little bit of social anxiety when I was younger. It’s gotten better as I’ve gotten older, but I notice a big difference with that setting when I have to be at conferences or like very extroverted forward-facing places. It makes a huge difference. And then also I use the sleep and relaxation settings quite often to fall asleep at night. So, just wanted to give a plug for that, and I’ll, of course, make sure it’s linked in the show notes as well if you guys want to find it and try it out because it really has been helpful for me and for my kids.

The figure looked like Link. Sidon had spent more than enough time studying Link’s body and facial figures that he could easily recognize him but this figure..was not the Link he knew. His skin was as dark as the midnight, moonless sky. The eyes that were returning his stare glowed bright red like a blood moon. Once straw yellow blonde hair was now as white as bone, standing out in stark contrast against dark, dusky skin. Everything about this figure was the complete opposite to how Link normally was - an absolute contrast to the Hero of Hyrule.
And yet, his mind was insisting that this was Link. His eyes lighted upon the familiar shape of the eyes, nose and mouth; his nose picked up on the subtle but still present hints of Link’s familiar scent. Despite the very noticeable differences from the Link he knew and the one currently standing in front of him, there was no doubt in his mind that the figure was his Link.
Taking a slow, cautious step forward, he softly said, “Link?”
A tremor ran through Link’s body. To his dismay, his little Hylian took a step back, away from Sidon. His face, which had previously been slack jawed with surprise was beginning to morph into one of profound alarm. Even more so than before, the tenseness in Link’s body clearly communicated that he was about to flee. Where to, Sidon wasn’t sure and why, he couldn’t say either.
Slowly, he held his arms out to Link and, without breaking their gaze, cooed in a gentle, soothing tone, “It’s alright, little one. It’s alright. It’s me, it’s just me.”
He took another step forward, resisting the urge to simply rush forward and gather his little Hylian up in his arms. The look on his face - that expression of fear and dread - it was breaking his heart. He didn’t understand what was going on but the moment, he didn’t care. All he wanted to do was reassure and comfort Link.
“Stay away!” Link cried, his voice high pitched and cracking with distress. “Don’t come close to me!”
Sidon froze, the raw emotions in Link’s voice making his blood run cold. His heart clenched in his chest, as though someone had reached through his ribs and wrapped their first tightly around the pumping muscle. Swallowing hard, he struggled to smile as comfortingly as possible as his little Hylian, “Link-”
“Don’t.” Link whimpered, backing up even further. Even though they were some distance apart, Sidon could clearly see how violently he was shaking, “Stay away.”
There was no doubt in his mind that Link was planning on running away. When a frightened animal is backed into a corner, that was usually the option chosen. That, or fight and he didn’t think Link was going to take that route. No, if Sidon pushed this, he was going to run. That was something he couldn’t allow to happen. He didn’t understand what was going on but that didn’t matter much to him. Link was terrified out of his mind - that was all he cared about. He couldn’t let him face whatever this was alone.
But it was clear his words weren’t getting through. Not that he could blame his little Hylian for something like that. In such a badly panicked state, it’s hard to think of anything other than the terror thundering through your veins. That, however, left him with an issue. If his voice alone wasn’t enough, he might not have any other choice than to charge him. Link was quick but there was nowhere for him to go. Neither the water nor land were viable escape routes as Sidon could easily catch up to him on both. Not to mention, Link’s panic was going to give him the advantage. Though, he doubted his little Hylian was thinking of any of those things.
Straightening his back, he took in a deep, slow breath, let it out slowly before saying in the calmest voice he could manage, “Link, come here.”
Link stared silently at him for a moment more, his expression terrified and conflicted, before swiftly turning away, clear with the intention to dive into the water. Without a moment’s hesitation, Sidon dashed forward, and within a single breath, he had closed the distance between them, his arms snapping out to quickly wrap around Link’s trembling waist. He had gotten lucky. The moment Link had turned around, one of his legs had bent awkwardly, causing him to stumble slightly which had given Sidon more than enough time to reach him. Ignoring his panicked yelp, Sidon wrenched him up, out of the water and took several steps backs, tightening his arms into an unbreakable vice as Link immediately began to struggle. Link was strong, but had never been able to match Sidon’s power. He easily outweighed him and with his arms tightly wound around the small Hylian’s body, the most he would do was squirm in his locked embrace.
“No!” He shrieked hysterically, “It’ll spread to you! Sidon! Please!”
Continuing to ignore his protests for the moment, Sidon carefully strode back to the shore, ensuring his grip never lessened nor slipped, despite the pain pulsing in his heart at hearing his beloved Link cry out in such a way. Now on solid land, he moved away from the water before sitting down, cradling Link close to his chest, enclosing his legs around him, though still giving him enough room so that he didn’t feel completely trapped. In his arms, the Hylian was still struggling and exclaiming that ‘it’ was going to spread to Sidon, to poison him.
Leaning down, he pressed his lips close to Link’s ear and whispered in a strong, intense tone, “Stop.”
Surprisingly, that seemed to be enough as Link immediately went still, his chest heaving, tears streaming down from his blood red eyes. Keeping one arm still tightly wrapped around his waist, Sidon held out the other to shove him that there was nothing on his skin, not a speck nor smear of black. Reaching forward slightly, he took one of Link’s shaking hands in his own, swiped the pad of his thumb over his knuckles before once again showing that whatever it was that was ailing Link was not affecting him.
“See?” He whispered, pressing a soft, comforting kiss against Link’s hot cheek, “It’s okay. I’m okay.”
Link stared blankly at Sidon’s hand for several moments, his breath slowly calming down to a normal pace before all the tension fled his body and he went limp in Sidon’s arms. Slightly loosening his hold around his waist, ready to tighten them again if Link made any move to escape, Sidon pressed a few more light, gentle kisses along the side of his head before whispering, “You’re alright, you’re okay, I’ve got you. I’m right here, my love. Just talk to me, tell me what happened.”
“I don’t know.” Link replied softly, after a while of silence, his thick heavy with repressed sobs, “I was in a shrine, there was this vat of black goo that I tried to cross but I fell in. When I got out, this started happening.” he raised his shaking hands out in front of him, “It started at the tips of my fingertips before slowly spreading to the rest of me. I tried to wash it off but that didn’t work. I don’t know what this is, Sidon.”
“Do you feel sick at all?” He asked, rubbing his fingers in large, easy circles on the back of Link’s hand. Black goo - the only thing he could think of that being was the corruption often seen around the towers. He had little knowledge of the substance, though he knew it shouldn’t be touched as the nasty material harmed organic matter. If Link wasn’t harmed, it must be either a different type of corruption or was something else entirely.
“A little woozy and nauseous but I don’t honestly know if it’s because of this.”
“Alright, that means whatever it is, it isn’t immediately dangerous.” Sidon replied, relief evident in his voice, “I take it you’ve been like this for a while?”
“Couple hours, I think.”
“If it does have an effect, it’s slow acting. What we’re going to do now is go to my Father. He might have some idea of what this is and what to do about it.”
“What if he doesn’t?” Link asked after a tense moment of silence, his voice soft.
“Then we find someone who does.” Sidon replied simply, standing up, still holding Link firmly in his arms.
Truth be told, he wasn’t certain himself whether or not his Father would have an answer. He had never seen anything like this, so the possibility of his Father knowing, it was most likely slim at best. Still, he couldn’t allow Link to catch on to that. Despite his own unease with the entire thing, he needed to remain the constant calm pillar of strength in Link’s eyes.
“Can you walk?” He asked gently, though he didn’t want to put him down, partly out of fear that he’d run again but mostly because he just didn’t want to let go of him. Still, he wanted to give Link the option so he wouldn’t feel like he was being treated like a child.
Link remained quiet for a moment before slowly shaking his head, “I’d prefer this, if that’s alright.”
“Of course,” Sidon said soothingly, leaning down to lovingly nuzzle the side of Link’s head. Slipping one arm underneath his knees, he carefully situated his little Hylian until he was comfortably cradled in his arms. Pausing for a moment so he could swoop once again and place a quick, soft kiss against Link’s trembling lips, he whispered, “Everything will be alright. I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”
Straightening up, he began walking back towards the path he came from. Link snuggled closer to him, his body still slightly trembling. They traveled in silence for a long while, both lost in their own thoughts. His own mind was occupied in trying to figure out just what he was going to do if his Father didn’t know what this was or what to do about it. Link had mentioned some scientists who researched ancient artifacts, they might have some idea. There was also Impa, an elder Sheikah - he felt for certain that if his Father didn’t know, she was their best bet.

“No, I wasn’t. I will admit, I was startled as this is a rather large change from how you regularly look but never frightened.”
Link was quiet for a long while, before he quietly spoke up once more, “This doesn’t bother you, does it?”
“It bothers me in the sense that I don’t know what this is doing to you. If this is physically harming you, I want to be rid of it. If it isn’t, then my only concern is how you feel about it. Other than that, no, it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.”
“How can it not? Look at me!” Link held his hands in front of him, stretching out his fingers so that Sidon could see every inch of his dusky skin.
“All I see is you. Why would you think this would change anything?”
“I look like a demon!” Link spat, his voice trembling. “How could that not change anything?!”
Coming to a stop, Sidon put Link back down onto the ground, turned him around before straightening up and looked down at him with a calm gaze, “I’ll ask you again. Why would you think this would change anything? Your outward appearance is not indicative of who you are so why would I allow my perception of you to alter based on that?”
Link didn’t answer. Instead, he stared down at the ground, his head bowed forward far enough that Sidon couldn’t see his face at all. Resisting the urge to reach out to gently stroke Link’s hair, Sidon patiently gazed down at him, waiting for him to figure out what it was he wanted to say. In the meantime, his mind considered Link calling himself a demon. If he were being completely honest, he could somewhat understand Link viewing himself in such a way. With those eyes, he couldn’t deny it was like gazing into the eyes of a monster.
But, in this case, the eyes weren’t mirrors of the soul. That face, that voice, the person himself was still Link, unchanged from the altruistic, headstrong, constant hero he has always been.
“I’m not as pure as you think I am.” Link suddenly spoke up.
“Eh?” Sidon replied in surprise.
“I’m not-” Link paused, pulled in a deep breath before letting it out slowly, “There’s darkness in me, Sidon. Anger, hate, guilt and terror, they’re all inside me, constantly pushing at the back of my mind. This,” he held out his hands, “is just a representation of that. A representation of the darkness inside of me.”
Sidon paused for a moment before tilting his head slightly, “What on earth gave you the notion that I thought you were pure?”
A jolt raced through Link’s body. His head shot up, eyes wide with surprise and distress, his mouth opening to speak but Sidon lifted a hand to stop him. Shaking his head slowly, he sighed, feeling guilty for having spoken without thinking of what he was saying and certain that his folly had greatly hurt Link, “I apologize, those weren’t the right words to use. Rather, what I was trying to ask was why you thought I would view as someone who couldn’t have those kinds of feelings?”
The pain eased out of Link’s face, his expression morphing into one of profound confusion. Sighing again, Sidon knelt down in front of his little Hylian, reached forward to take his hands into his own and continued, “Link, just because you’re the Hero of Light doesn’t mean that you will ever be someone without some darkness in your soul. No one will ever be free of anger, of hurting - that is simply how the world is. And given what you’ve endured up until this point, I would say that it’s perfectly natural for you to be angry, to feel hateful towards those that have put you in such a position, to feel grief over all you’ve lost and terror of the weight on your shoulders. I simply don’t understand why you would think that just because of you are in the position of Champion of Hyrule, that would mean you are exempt from those types of feelings?”
Link stared blankly up at him for several moments before, to his surprise, he ripped his hands away from Sidon’s, anger filling his face, and took several steps backwards.
“No!” He cried, his voice cracking, “I’m not supposed to feel like this. I’m the hero! The Champion! This isn’t-I’m not-!”
“Enough.” Sidon commanded, his voice sterner than he had intended, though it had the desired effect.
Link immediately froze, his shoulders heaving, tears streaming down his cheeks. With his hands clenched hard by his sides, he let his head fall forward and spat out, “I don’t have the option to feel like this. I can’t afford to fall.”
Stepping forward, Sidon reached forward, took hold of Link’s chin and wrenched his head up. The face that met his gaze held an expression of utter conflict. Sidon could easily see the chaos running amok in Link’s mind in those red eyes. To his surprise, he could swear that his eyes had darkened and the color of his skinned looked to have deepened as well. A thought suddenly popped into his head, an idea of what could be happening with Link appearance wise. Keeping his expression stern, he leaned down until his face was just inches from Link’s and said softly, “You do realize this might be a trial in of itself, correct?”
“Eh?”
“You’re perception of yourself is highly flawed. Even the strongest person in the world is not free from anger and fear. As I’ve said before, you are not exempt. Thinking that you are just makes you that more vulnerable to falling because they build up inside of you, swallowed down into your stomach where it brews and boils into a toxic concoction and when you can’t hold it back anymore, it will overwhelm you, poisoning your entire being until that anger, that hate, that fear is all you can feel. And you won’t know how to handle it, how to healthily express it. You will just tell yourself over and over again that this is not allowed to you, and eventually crack underneath that immense pressure.”
Sliding his hands up Link’s cheeks, he cupped them gently, leaned even closer and whispered, “My love, perhaps this change in appearance is bringing to light the dark feelings inside of you but not for the reason you think. Perhaps this is a trial meant to teach you that these feelings are a part of you, that you will not be free of them and mayhap, this is meant to help you accept them, rather than shove them further away.”
“But I’m-!”
“Stop.” Sidon said firmly, “Link, look at your hands. Your skin is getting darker.”
Link obediently did so, holding his hands out in front of him. Without a doubt, the color of his skin had deepened considerably. A noticeable tremor immediately settled into Link’s body. Reaching down, Sidon closed one of his hands around Link’s while wrapping his other arm around Link’s back. Pulling him close, he whispered gently, “You’re denying a piece of yourself that is meant to be there. Love, this isn’t a test or a challenge of so called purity. It’s to bring to light that even heroes, even champions are allowed to feel like this. It will only get worse if you keep shoving these feelings down.”
Pressing closer to him, burying his head into Sidon’s shoulder, Link whispered shakily, “What if you’re wrong? What if my skin is getting darker because of how I’m feeling right now?”
“What are you actively trying to do right now, Link? You’re trying to deny these feelings and shove them away, are you not?”
Sidon took Link’s silence in response as a yes. Squeezing him tighter, he breathed, “If I’m wrong, then we’ll go from there. But this is the best explanation we have right now for what this could be, so wouldn’t it be best to go with this for now?”
“Say you are right, what do I do?” Link asked after a tense moment of silence.
Pausing himself, Sidon thought for a short while before responding, “Weep.”
“What?”
“Weep.” He repeatedly softly, pulling back slightly from Link so he can look down at him, “You’re holding back tears as best you can and with every tear that falls, you clench your hold on your sadness, your fear even tighter. Let go, let yourself have this, let yourself go.”
“But-”
“For me, then.” Sidon interrupted him, cupping his face in his hands once more. Leaning down, he pressed a quick, soft kiss against Link’s lips, “Do it for me. Let me hold you in my arms and comfort you. There’s no one here but us, and you know that I will never think any less of you. So, please, Link.”
He thought for a moment that Link was going to further to deny his request; his mind immediately began racing with encouragements and arguments that would hopefully convince him when suddenly, to his relief, he heard the telltale sound of a sob. With his head bowed, Link stepped forward, pressed himself into Sidon’s chest, wrapped his arms around his broad back, barely even getting halfway around, and started to weep openly.
Immediately encasing his precious little Hylian in his arms, Sidon sat down on the uneven ground, tugging Link along with him and into his lap. Squeezing him tightly, he lovingly stroked the back of his head and whispered soothingly into his ear, encouraging him to get it all out, to cry until he couldn’t anymore. Link’s back and shoulders heaved with the force of his crying; desperate, painful, coughing sobs ripped their way out of his throat. His fingernails dug into Sidon’s back, though not even with enough strength to hurt. Rather, it felt like he was holding onto Sidon for dear life, as though he were out in a tumultuous sea and Sidon was a saving grace, a piece of wood barely keeping him buoyant. He could feel tears and snot pooling on his skin, steaming down to his stomach but that bothered him none. In all truthfulness, it hurt so much to hear Link weep but, at the same time, he was so relieved that he was finally allowing himself to cry.
The storm didn’t last long. One of such ferocious energy never did. Link’s sobs gradually quieted down to gasping hiccups. Brushing his fingers up and down his little Hylian’s spine, he waited patiently for all remnants to work themselves out. All the while, he whispered and cooed little nothings lovingly, peppering small, gentle kisses along the side of Link’s head, and along the length of his ear.
It took a while longer for Link to entirely calm down. Taking slow, deep breaths, sniffing hard occasionally, he remained in place, pressed close to Sidon before letting his arms slip away. Sidon felt him wipe his face with the back of his arm. Pressing his lips against the crown of Link’s head, he nuzzled him gently and asked, his voice muffled by his hair, “Feel better?”
“My head hurts.” Link responded softly.
Chuckling, Sidon leaned back, “I’d imagine. But how do you feel?”
“Better.” He replied after a pause, “Better than I thought I would.”
Sidon could feel the tenseness in his shoulders vanish, relief rushing through his body. Smiling, he whispered, “I’m glad. Raise your head, let me see your face, my love.”
Sniffing hard once more, Link slowly obeyed, tilting his head back so he could look up at Sidon. Once their eyes met, Sidon’s eyes widened in surprise before his smile widened. Brushing Link’s hair out of his face, he said, “Looks like I was right.”
“Huh?”
“Your eyes, they’ve returned to normal.” He hadn’t expected such an immediate change but the eyes staring up at him were the blue eyes he knew and loved. The only hint of red remaining was what had obviously come from Link crying.
Link’s eyes widened, his hands flying up to his face to touch his cheeks gingerly. Studying his face closely, Sidon discovered that the color of his eyes wasn’t the only thing that had changed: the duskiness of his skin had lightened as well. It wasn’t a significant change but still noticeable. He actually was somewhat surprised, however. In the back of his mind, he hadn’t really expected this to work, though he had tried to remain hopeful regardless. Despite his initial doubt, he was incredibly happy to find that Link was returning to normal and it seemed as though his intuition had been right.
“It’s honestly back to normal?” Link asked breathlessly, relief evident in his voice.
“Your eyes are as blue and beautiful as the day I met you.” Sidon replied.
Link blinked hard several times before letting his hands fall down into his lap, “You were right.”
“It would seem so.” He said, reaching up to wipe away the residue of tears from one of his cheeks.
His little Hylian was silent for several moments before asking, “What now?”
“I don’t know.” Sidon replied honestly, “Perhaps it would just be best for you to be honest with yourself and take the time to think this out.”
Wiping his nose on the sleeve of his shirt, Link sniffed hard once more, turned his head away slightly before glancing back up at him, “Can I stay with you?”
Leaning down to kiss his little Hylian firmly, Sidon breathed against his lips, “Of course, you’re place is by my side, after all. We’ll figure this out together, my love.”
Nodding slightly, he wiped away what was left of the tears away from his eyes with the heel of his hand. Sniffing softly, he asked, “Could we just stay like this for a while?”
Pulling Link close to his chest once more, Sidon curled his body protectively around his little Hylian, breathing in his scent deeply. Tucking his legs around Link’s, he cradled him close, comforted by the feel of his warmth, the sensation of his chest and shoulders moving slightly with the force of him breathing. Weaving his fingers through his soft, silky hair, he whispered, “Yes, for as long as you like.”
Snuggling even closer, relaxing completely into Sidon’s embrace, Link breathed out softly, “I’ll fall asleep on you.”
“I will carry you, in that case.” Placing a kiss against the top of his head, he continued, “Sleep, my little one.”
He felt Link nodded slightly against his chest before he fell still. Holding him close, thankful to just be able to embrace the one he loved, Sidon breathed in his scent, listened to the river running in the distant and wondered who he could thank for this trial. Though it had caused Link obvious distress, it was clear that this was something that needed to happen. All he could hope for now was that this would stick and he could encourage Link to be more gentle, more considerate of himself. Perhaps even, if he was lucky, he could also persuade Link into being a little more selfish, a little more demanding and he himself would be allowed to spoil him just a little bit more.

I Have Known What I Should Pursue in Believing in God

I am a graphic designer. In 1998, I bought into my friend’s design company on invitation. Under my careful management, the company quickly stepped on the right track and opened branches. Four years later, unexpectedly, the company suddenly got confronted with financial loss and my partners would take the opportunity to withdraw their shares. In the end I undertook all the loss.
Just when I fell to the lowest point in my life, God’s salvation came upon me. At a preaching meeting, I accepted the gospel of the Lord. After that, the brothers and sisters often comforted and encouraged me. I was moved and knew all of this came from God’s love. Therefore, I began to focus on reading the Bible and knowing about the Lord Jesus.
But several years later, I found the brothers and sisters were not so humble and loving as I had imagined. Like the worldly people, they engaged in jealous disputes with each other for the sake of their own interests; they showed their disobedience on their faces when criticized. I wondered why those who had believed in the Lord for many years acted as the worldly people. As for myself, though I had learned to be humble and didn’t get angry easily, I would quibble with others over things that involved my interests, and I never compromised; I had disputes with my wife and constantly exposed hot blood when we had different ideas. Though having believed in the Lord for years, I didn’t grow in my life, so I went to another church. The elder in the new church often told us to have good faith in the Lord, and he also taught us how to treat our marriage and the people around us, and that we should behave ourselves honestly, and so on. I felt such teachings good, so I tried to treat others according to these teachings. Often as I exposed hot blood, I believed that as long as I kept pursuing, I would have more likeness of a Christian and win God’s acceptance.
In November 2017, from a fortuitous opportunity I got to know Sister Xinming and Sister Lili from Canada. When I communicateds God’s words with them, I found the two sisters understood God’s words thoroughly, and what they communicated was good. I was curious and envious: “Why do they have so much knowledge of God?” So I intended to learn more from them. Later on, we frequently communicated our respective faiths with each other. Meanwhile, I always told them the brothers and sisters in our church enthusiastically spread the Lord’s gospel, and that they loved the Lord and were able to suffer for Him, without jealous disputes with each other like those in other churches.
Sister Lili said, “Many true believers indeed are able to put some of the Lord’s teachings into practice; they possess some good behaviors, and they are also able to bear the cross for the Lord, suffer, and spread the gospel. However, can we surely be approved by God for these good behaviors? When it comes to some of our good behaviors, we are no match for the Pharisees. Walking barefoot into the temple in their priestly garments at dawn, burning the incense, offering sacrifices, then praying for the King and the people, they looked devout and loving. Moreover, they traveled sea and land preaching the gospel. But when the Lord Jesus came to work, in order to protect the existence of Judaism and their own status and livelihoods, not only did they refuse to accept the Lord’s gospel, they also wantonly fabricated rumors to slander and resist the Lord Jesus, and even nailed the Lord Jesus on the cross, all of which showed their satanic nature of resisting God. So, they were condemned and cursed by the Lord Jesus. It can be seen that one’s superficial good behaviors don’t mean that he can revere and obey God, or that he can surely gain God’s praise.” I approved of what the sister fellowshiped in my heart. We can merely see a person’s outward actions, but only God and he himself know the true thoughts in his mind. We indeed shouldn’t measure whether or not a person is approved by God based on his outward actions alone.
The sister continued, “What kind of people does God commend? The Lord Jesus said, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment’ (Matthew 22:37–38). From this we see that God commends those who truly love Him, obey Him, and revere Him. For example, Abraham could offer his only son unconditionally when God required him to do so; Noah completely obeyed God without giving any excuses when God called him to build an ark; Job, when faced with trials—losing all his property and ten children and even having sore boils all over his body—he still praised God and His name. Only this type of person has true love for God and is truly submissive to Him and approved by Him. Then think about ourselves. Even though we can pay some price outwardly and practice some of the Lord’s teachings, when we encounter some unfavorable environments, we can still resist and expose hot blood, even misunderstand and complain about God, without true obedience to God in our hearts. God is holy, while we always live in corrupt dispositions, so can we gain God’s approval?” At her words, I reflected on myself and thought: “That’s right! Though I am much better in actions than before, I often expose my corrupt disposition, such as hot blood, arrogance, self-righteousness, and so on. I can even complain about God when confronting unfavorable environments. God praises those who completely obey Him, who fear Him and shun evil, but I can do none of these.” But then I thought: “Aren’t we all alike? Even Paul said, ‘For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwells no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not’ (Romans 7:18). Could it be that they have solutions to my problem?”
Afterward, the sisters sent me some passages of words, and told me what kind of people God likes, what kind of people He loathes, and what kind of people can enter the kingdom of heaven, and so on. They told me the words were God’s utterances, that the Lord has returned, opened the little scroll, and revealed all the mysteries of God managing and saving mankind. Suddenly hearing them say so, I thought it incredible. I began to treat their fellowships prudently.
The next day, the sisters sent a movie The True Light Appears. The movie told about the experiential testimony of a brother. As arrogant as I, he was always self-centered and strict with his subordinates, living in sin and having no path to take. But after accepting Almighty God’s work of the last days and experiencing the judgment and chastisement of God’s word, he had some knowledge of his arrogant nature, and then found the way to resolve his arrogant nature. Finally he had some changes in his arrogant disposition. After watching the movie, I was excited. Though I hadn’t been completely certain about God’s work of the last days, I sensed that God’s work this time was not simple. At the meeting, I told the sisters how I felt after watching the movie. They sent me another passage of God’s words, “Before man was redeemed, many of Satan’s poisons had already been planted within him and, after thousands of years of being corrupted by Satan, he has within him an established nature that resists God. Therefore, when man has been redeemed, it is nothing more than a case of redemption in which man is bought at a high price, but the poisonous nature within him has not been eliminated. Man that is so defiled must undergo a change before becoming worthy to serve God. By means of this work of judgment and chastisement, man will fully come to know the filthy and corrupt substance within his own self, and he will be able to change completely and become clean. Only in this way can man become worthy to return before the throne of God.”
One of the sisters fellowshiped, “Because we have been corrupted by Satan, we have the sinful satanic nature in us, the product of which—our corrupt disposition—is much more serious than sin. We may seem reverent and spiritual from the outside, but if we have no changes in our satanic disposition, we will often sin and resist God. At the Age of Grace, according to people’s actual needs, the Lord Jesus did the work of redemption; so our sins will be forgiven if we act in accordance with the Lord’s teachings. At that time, what the Lord Jesus did was not meant to purify our satanic corrupt disposition. So even if we believe in the Lord, we will still involuntarily commit sins because our corrupt disposition hasn’t been eliminated. For example, when we have status, we are high, and we like to lecture others and let others listen to us; when others do something unsatisfying, we will expose hot blood, and even argue with them over right or wrong. These behaviors are a result of our arrogant and conceited corrupt disposition. Based on our needs, in the last days God has expressed the truth and done the work of judgment beginning at the house of God so as to purify and completely change our satanic disposition and make us into those who truly obey and revere God and win His praise.” The sister’s fellowship made me suddenly see the light. It turned out that it was because of my satanic nature within that I often lived in sin. My satanic nature is the root of my committing sins. If the root isn’t removed, then I cannot completely resolve the problem of sinning however I learn to be tolerant, patient and restrained. For example, it was the arrogant nature that caused me to stand high above the staff and blame others at will. If my nature can’t be changed, I will still expose my hot blood and naturalness. In the past, I believed that as long as I kept pursuing according to the pastor’s teachings, I would become more and more pious and loving. However, even the pastor, who has believed in the Lord for twenty or thirty years, still reveals the defiant and dissatisfied arrogant disposition when facing things that are not in line with his wishes: He also hasn’t changed yet. My imaginations seemed untenable.
At the end of the meeting, we watched a movie clip The Difference Between the Way of Repentance and the Way of Eternal Life from From the Throne Flows the Water of Life. Then I came to a better understanding: God carries out His work of saving mankind in steps and according to His plan. Based on mankind’s needs, God’s work and the truth He expressed in each age are different. The message spread by the Lord Jesus was the way of repentance. When we practice the Lord’s words and confess our sins and repent, we are only forgiven of our sins. What Almighty God brings to mankind in the last days is the way of changing our corrupt disposition and purifying our sins. Only if we accept the work of Almighty God will we thoroughly free ourselves from the bondage of sin, achieve purification, and enter God’s kingdom in the end.
In the subsequent several meetings, in order to get me to be clearer about how God does the work of judgment in the last days, a sister sent me a passage of God’s words, “In the last days, Christ uses a variety of truths to teach man, expose the essence of man, and dissect his words and deeds. These words comprise various truths, such as man’s duty, how man should obey God, how man should be loyal to God, how man ought to live out the normal humanity, as well as the wisdom and the disposition of God, and so on. These words are all directed at the essence of man and his corrupt disposition. In particular, those words that expose how man spurns God are spoken in regard to how man is an embodiment of Satan and an enemy force against God. In undertaking His work of judgment, God does not simply make clear the nature of man with just a few words; He exposes, deals with, and prunes it over the long term. These methods of exposure, dealing, and pruning cannot be substituted with ordinary words, but with the truth that man does not possess at all. Only methods of this kind are deemed judgment; only through judgment of this kind can man be subdued and thoroughly convinced into submission to God, and moreover gain true knowledge of God. What the work of judgment brings about is man’s understanding of the true face of God and the truth about his own rebelliousness. The work of judgment allows man to gain much understanding of the will of God, of the purpose of God’s work, and of the mysteries that are incomprehensible to him. It also allows man to recognize and know his corrupt substance and the roots of his corruption, as well as to discover the ugliness of man. These effects are all brought about by the work of judgment, for the substance of this work is actually the work of opening up the truth, the way, and the life of God to all those who have faith in Him. This work is the work of judgment done by God.”
The sister fellowshiped, “In the Age of Grace the Lord Jesus brought the way of repentance. We only know our superficial sins according to the Lord’s teachings, but we have no way to know our corruption in the deepest corner of our spirits. The truth that Almighty God expresses in the last days discloses not only our mistaken outward practices, but our minds and thoughts and corrupt disposition hidden in the deepest corner of our spirits. In the judgment and chastisement of God’s words we see that we have been so corrupted by Satan that we have no human likeness. So we hate ourselves, and thus have the resolution to forsake our flesh and to practice the truth. When practicing in accordance with God’s words and truths, we have tasted the happiness of practicing the truth within, so that we become more willing to live by the truth. Through continuously experiencing God’s judgment and chastisement, we gradually gain changes in our corrupt disposition, and walk the path of salvation. In the past, because I had no knowledge of my own satanic nature, in interacting with others, I often had disputes with them when having disagreements with them, and moreover, I firmly held on to myself. After accepting God’s work of the last days, through the revelation of God’s words, I came to realize that as a result of the satanic viewpoint ‘I’m my own Lord,’ my nature was especially arrogant, and I was self-righteous, self-important, and looked down upon others. I felt I was superior to others, and that my thoughts and views were the most correct. Therefore, when some of God’s words and work didn’t accord with my notions, I would involuntarily judge and resist them. Seeing my arrogant nature had caused me to be resistant to God in every aspect and totally irrational, I was particularly worried and fearful, so I prayed to God and asked Him to arrange environments to reveal me more so that I was able to have a deeper knowledge of my arrogant nature. Later, through God’s revelations one after another, I found my conceptions and imaginations all came from Satan, which didn’t comply with the truth. Afterward, I practiced setting aside and denying myself whenever I encountered a problem. In this way, I began to have changes in my life disposition, having some likeness of a true human being. Through my experiences, I truly realized that only Almighty God’s words of judgment and chastisement can make us have knowledge of our corrupt substance. Only through experiencing God’s judgment and chastisement and the revelations of trials, can we be purified, changed, and finally made complete into a person after God’s heart.”
The sister’s fellowship and testimony moved me deeply. As it turned out, the arrogant nature could bring about such serious results. Though I greeted the brothers and sisters with smiles and got along well with them in the church, when facing my subordinates or my wife and child at home, I would still reveal hot blood sometimes; in interacting with others, when encountering things that involved my interests, I would argue with them. Weren’t these behaviors of sin as well as the revelations of my corrupt disposition? They were not in line with the Lord’s will. Before, I thought that I was after God’s will as long as I had good behaviors outwardly, so I didn’t pay attention to these daily expressions. Now I understood that, without a change in my arrogant nature, I would not have true obedience and reverence toward God no matter how well I did on the surface. So dangerous it is to have an unchanged disposition! Meanwhile, what the sister communicated made me realize this: What the churches in the Age of Grace conveyed are some instructive words, teaching us to be tolerant and patient and to get along well with each other, but we are unable to know ourselves, much less know God. On the contrary,the brothers and sisters in The Church of Almighty God come to know themselves and seek transformation in their disposition through accepting the judgment and chastisement of God’s word. They have borne true testimonies, which can’t be achieved by those believers in various denominations, no matter how many years they have believed in the Lord. At that time, I came to understand that only by accepting God’s work of judgment in the last days can I achieve changes in my disposition, be made into a new person and become qualified to come before God.
