As we all know, the Guilty Gear Series is wildly popular with the LGBT Community, which is why we at Arc System Works have decided to compile a few of the Guilty Gear Characters canon sexualities!

Sol (Literally Freddy Mercury, Bi.)

Ky (Married to a woman but had that incredibly gay scene with Sol in Revelator and a lot of homoerotic official art, Bi.)

May (Has a crush on Johnny but shows interest in Elphelt during Magnum Wedding, which is incapable of overwrititing sexuality, so Bi.)

Millia ( Her favorite thing is Not Fucking, so likely asexual. Was in a relationship with Zato and shows attraction to Elphelt during Magnum Wedding, so Biromantic.)

Johnny (Loves women and is very vocal about it. While some of his past may lead Gearsters to believe he is straight, like his embarassment when finding out Bridget was a guy, this is because he realized he hit on a minor, not because Bridget is male. He has a very ambigious relationship with Testament. While they have come out as Nonbinary since, said relationship existed beforehand: Likely Bi. )

Axl (He misses Megumi his girlfriend, but is also fuckbuddies with Sol, so Bi.)

Zato (Was in a relationship with millia before dying, but after being revived by the conclave, they took away his horny priviledges, so he is Asexual now. Eddie fucks and cannot be stopped.)

Chipp (has not shown attraction to any women outside of Magnum Wedding, has had some gay moments with Anji and Answer but isn’t aware of either. Bi and a dumbass.)

Testament (Not interested in anyone except for maybe Johnny, likely asexual or gay. Also Nonbinary, which, while not a sexuality, is still worth mentioning here.)

Kliff (Hasn’t gotten in up in 40 years and is too busy being dead to even consider getting with anyone. Has shown a lack of interest in women. Likely asexual.)

Potemkin (Has never shown attraction to anyone, is immune to Magnum Wedding, Asexual.)

Justice (Doesn’t have a gender and is too angry about humanity to be attracted to anything. Asexual.)

Venom (Venom. Gay.)

Anji Mito (Has an ambigious relationship with Baiken, has flirted directly with Chipp and told him to wear less clothes, Bi or Gay.)

Guilty Gear Design Revisions

Guilty Gear is a great series, with some great characters. However, the designs can be rather hit or miss; with some of the women taking the most hits. So I have decided to toss my hat into the ring and suggest some changes for the designs.

But first, rules.

There will be two types of revisions made here; Some I think would better fit their stories and characters, and some are just personal taste. I will label them as such.

Some characters will have both types of suggestions, some will only have one, and some won't be featured at all. This does not mean there are no changes that could be made, or even should be made, it just means I haven't given enough thought to them to come up with any.

I will be focusing entirely on characters who are currently in Strive as of today, October 2nd 2023.

With all that wrote, let's begin.

Baiken

For Improvements; My girl needs some beef on her bones. And I don't just mean a little bit of tone on the belly, I mean tree trunk limbs and shoulder so wide she has to turn around just to get through most doors. Scars too. Seeing her model having essentially a completely clear face will never not feel off to me. Rough skin, chapped lips, maybe some scarred titties if we're feeling particularly uncowardly. Also, some signs of aging would provide a nice flavour to the design, like gray hairs and wrinkles.

For Personal Taste; Some baggy army pants alongside the dyke boots Daisuke used in this image would look pretty nice.

Sin

For Improvement; Make him look like an acrobat, not a body builder. I know it's funny seeing this canonical five-year-old be swole beyond belief, but it just doesn't fit the character. He isn't swinging around a giant sword and overpowering his opponent with sheer brute force, he isn't Sol. Instead, he's flying around the battlefield with polejumps and cartwheels and backflips and frontflips, confusing then striking with a quick physical blow or some potent magic. He's an excited doing acrobatics, and he should look like it.

Ramlethal

For Improvement; First off, give her a new outfit. The Xrd tube top and short shorts, while nice for horniness, is terrible for her character. Strive kind of fixed this, but they didn't commit as much as they should have. I'm thinking an outfit like this by @matcchio.

Secondly, she must become more creature-esque. She was given a maw full of shark teeth and they didn't do anything with it. It doesn't even show up in Strive. Some thicker, curlier hair would also be appreciated.

For personal taste; Take all the muscle you took off Sin and give it to her. This would probably have to coincide with making her a bit more of a bruiser, gaining some health and losing some speed. I think it would be cool, though.

Johnny

For personal taste; make him not white, dear lord. He would be so much cooler if he weren't a Blue Eyes White Dragon.

Happy Chaos

For improvement; Use the X's he has on his body to give him top surgery scars connected to the heart symbol on his chest.

For Personal Taste; Put some goddamn shoes on. This is gonna be a big showing of my taste in character design, but I just am incapable of fully enjoying a character's looks if they've got the dogs out. I put this here because it at least supports his character, unlike Ram, so I can tolarate it, but I have a Happy Chaos Shoes mod for a reason. It may show weakness, but I'm fine with that.

Giovanna

For improvement; Make her eyes not blue. Why are they blue. At least on Nago you can argue it's a contrast to his red and black eyes when he's in hangry mode, but if you wanted an eye colour related to her powers you could just make them green.

In Conclusion

I may have acted like a bit of a hater near the end, but I do genuinely love this series; and, like with many things, my love makes me privy to all manner of less than great things in it. Anyway, if you've got any additions to this list, feel free to tell me all about it.

Justice needs more friends.

A kind of precursor to my other post featuring these guys, to explain how that happened. The Valentine siblings are like... 9 months old here, so they're physically roughly 8 and dressed like it.

I noticed that a lot of Bridget's canon designs give her a veil / back-of-head-and-neck covering, so I'm trying to find a good one to give her.

Most of this au is locked up behind story developments that I'm writing as fast as I can, but I'll take questions about whatever I post (lol).

Jack-O is transmasc in my au, and while I didn't put too much thought into his outfit here (I just kinda went 'her outfits a jumpsuit, that was an 80s thing, the 80s had a heck of a lot of glitter and sparkles, maybe I'll give him a disco-ish suit') but I honestly love how it came out. I'll tinker with it more, change the jacket, but he looks good.

Sylv's sock garters look way weirder without xer.... socks. Whoops.

Elphelt: I feel like Elphelt would've been a really girly kid. You know how some little girls dress super girly, frilly skirts and cute socks and whatever? That's Elphelt. I gave her some bows for that, and long hair.

Jack-O: I felt that a tank-top and shorts would fit pretty well. Jack-O feels like a pretty active kid who runs hot and plays messy, so a simple outfit that is easy to pull off when getting hosed down to clean up for dinner seemed like a good idea. Plus some hideously colored high-top shoes, since that's utterly kid-clothing-core.

Ramlethal: I gave Ramlethal a jacket and long pants. Ramlethal is transfem in this au, but being raised by the people she's raised by (primarily Justice, with long visits to Bridget, Sylv, and Robo-Ky for human socializing) I don't think she would experience much dysphoria from gender expectations growing up. This is a long winded way to say that the jacket is just because that's what the broken up lines looked like and she's in the back so she was hard to design (lol). If I draw more of the Valentine kids while they're young, I'll definitely work harder at styling Ramlethal.

Reading your yandere A.B.A with a male S/O has prompted me to ask for one Yandere Elphelt and Ramlethal with a male S/O it can be separate or shared seeing how I could see those to share a darling.

-Elphelt got crushes left and right. But, with you? She felt connection. So, she grabbed your hand, guiding it to the marriage certificate. You were bit confused about it, but signed it nonetheless, not realizing it was a marriage certificate. She let out a gleeful giggle, as you did so.

-Elphelt would be a mix of submissive and delusional type of yandere. She would be happy to do anything for you, so even the smallest task would be done. But, she also insisted that you were with her as she did them. And, she would drag you by force, if you said no. Delusional, as she saw even the smallest acts as these huge acts of love. She loved everything you did and said, which only boosted her adoration of you.

-Whenever you spoke to others and Elpehlt was present, she had her arm around your arm. Whenever she thought someone was getting too close to yo, she gripped your arm tighter and glared at the person. The person usually, would back little bit. If, they didn't she would make up some excuse.

"Oh, dear. Didn't we need to go to the thing... You know the thing. Bye!" She exclaimed loudly, to the person as she dragged you off. She wouldn't let you out of her sights for the rest of the day, as she wanted to remind you, you were hers and she was yours.

-The moment Ram realized, she felt something different towards you, she acted. She was with you as often as possible, no matter where you were or her duties. Ram being the blunt person, she is, she would simply grab your hand. She looked at you with deadpan expression. "You're mine." She squeezed your hand, bit harder than she meant to.

-After, that claim she grabbed you and placed you to her place. She just simply told you, you lived there now. You sort of rolled with it, as she helped you to move your stuff to her place.

-Ram would be eliminating type of yandere. As, she was already bad at picking up social cues, she never really understood when you were just talking to someone or bumping into someone by accident. Ram would eliminate the person the moment you turned away from them. Her face didn't even flinch, from her deadpan face as she got rid of the "competition". She allowed you to walk around, without her. But, she did keep an eye on you for most of time.

I do like Sin a lot, I like the sort of cocktail confidence in using the flag. I especially love his Strive design because of his silly boy face but the roided out body, like Sol has only been feeding him dry protein powder for years. You get a couple doodles!

Aw, certainly! I can never say no to these! Every time it pops up from the ether it puts a smile on my face

Elphelt

-Elphelt falls in love hard and fast, the actual difficult part is giving the whole thing more depth instead of it just being an idealized concept

-To try and clarify that idea, Elphelt goes in expecting a lot of things about what a relationship could be, y'know, classic scripted romcom trappings up to the nines. The first time something goes undeniably wrong, she'll have a moment of confused realization when the relationship doesn't immediately explode once she's strayed away from some imagined script

-Does not hesitate to make her feelings known, she's the sort to leave love notes in lockers and heap unsubtle praise on her object of affection

-Despite that, she still wonders whether or not she's being too subtle

-Frequent daydreamer, if you approach her in the midst of it she's probably doodling romantic scribbles all over what's nearest. Be careful not to leave any political documents nearby unless you want them plastered with 'Elphelt x s/o' and hearts with arrows all over it

Sin

-He doesn't have a lot of personal experiences with romance, so at first he gets a little confused and wonders why he wants someone to be best friends really, really badly

-He has that infamous 'oh' moment where it just slaps him across the face several weeks in.

-His parents aren't exactly great with advice given their own weird romantic history, but they're at least good at emphasizing the idea of loving deeply even if the circumstances are strange.

-Any attempted confessions ends up taking a long tangent about chairs

-Has no idea how pining works, if anything he'll just end up shouting it and/or dumping everything out to the first person who asks why he's being so absentminded today

Ramlethal

-Ram is the sort of person who believes that a partner isn't too different from a very very good friend. As such, she'll want to make sure she considers someone a friend before she can fathom the thought of being her partner

-Sometimes she gets a little ahead of herself, she can have a hard time knowing what to do in a 'normal' relationship and isn't fully certain whether or not it's appropriate or crossing a boundary . She's trying, but there isn't exactly a manual available

-She knows people like dogs, though, so Ketchup is a good secret weapon. Even if it's painfully obvious she set him out and guided him over in order to have an excuse to start a conversation.

-Ram has an impeccable poker face, but conversely to her sister, she thinks she's being too obvious and is genuinely surprised when someone says otherwise.

Bedman

-He is too intelligent and rational for such sappy displays. He has some level of dignity

-No, that little tchotchke on his shelf isn't the same one that you offered and he reluctantly took, Sin. What are you asking for. Are you a cop.

-He gets very, very mad about having a crush and it's kind of adorable. The thoughts do go away as soon as he wants them to and he scrunches up his face like a grumpy dog

-Unsubtle. Painfully, painfully unsubtle. He does everything shy of walking up to them and shouting 'I'M NOT THINKING ABOUT YOU AND YOU CAN'T PROVE I AM'

I love it when fighting games put cool little character extras in the games like pre-fight sequences where they trade moves and clash or a little piece of dialogue where they're taunting each other, or declaring their undying hatred (or sometimes deep love and friendship) with unexpected banter. A lot of fighting games try to recreate that now with every character having a pre-fight line that it open ended to lead to a generic response that kind of works in context. The times when it's tailor made for these two specific characters, and is a meaningful interaction between them just makes it so good.

Or a really fantastic thing I like is character specific taunts. This is probably also one of my favorite things about Guilty Gear Strive, and one of the ways I feel it is a very good game. I could go on about the Guilty Gear Series, and often do. One day I'll write in depth about my feelings on Strive. But anyway, I digress. Strive has character specific taunts and I love that so much. ESPECIALLY when it's not a thing you'll ever discover in a real match. Nobody is going to let you get away with taunting for 5-10 seconds while Elphelt gushes to Ramlethal about starting a band. You have to play around in training mode to even notice that. But fighting games have such strong characterization that they can make you do something like that just to see it. This isn't a character specific taunt example but Nagoryuki's monologue about onigiri is a prime example of the least practical thing you could ever put as a thing you can do in a fighting game, but it makes the game itself so much better. You come to care enough about the characters in the game that you'll go into the training mode just to see more about them. And maybe while you're there you'll lab a few combos.

At a certain point you'll think "That pre-fight clash between Slayer and Holy Order Sol was fucking cool. I want to see that again" or "The Jin vs. Ragna theme is great, I'll work on my execution and use that matchup to hear that song." Then you go into training mode and do that shit, and you get better at the game.

I love it when fighting games do that. At a certain point character design and writing become a gameplay element. The thing that makes you want to invest time. They make characters you want to root for. You want to see them succeed. They get you invested in the fight and they make you want to win because you love them too much to see them do that.

I love it when fighting games.

we got a bunch of new guilty gear concept arts, starting with xrd:

faust was supposed to be fucking gigantic. that's sol, our favorite 6'0+ gear being absolutely dwarfed by whatever faust did to himself. really cool

they had a hard time deciding what ramlethal was going to look like, you can see inspirations of valentine here (which carried over into her having lucifero,) and the later concepts, using a "snow woman" motif.

jack-o also had some pretty cool designs, i'll miss the hat greatly. its also interesting to not that she has the hair that would be given to her in strive from the beginning, so that's technically a reference to beta art now that she has it (albeit without the red suit, which looks really cool.)

slayer was originally going to get younger every time he command grabbed, but this got scrapped. you can also see some other quick sketches of slayer, jam, jack-o, elphelt, and ramlethal here too!

next, we have strive concept art

while al ot of these characters remained the same, axl got a jacket, chipp gave answers scarf back, faust has both his xrd (read: another story mode design) and his scrubs here, potemkin seemed to be getting some changes, i-no was... well, less dressed. giovanna had long hair, goldlewis looked like more of a gay biker, nago had a red helmet, and testament was... buff as hell

we also got some more ky's, i will admit i do miss the square silhouette he used to have. i think his strive design is a tad boring but its okay.

we also have a larger version of the testament seen above, and another older design. (sidenote, i love seeing daisuke draw with markers again. its very rare)

thats all we have so far unfortunately, i hope they release more of this because i love seeing concept art a lot.
