A/N: So I’m not sure if you were expecting minks, but I did included Chopper and Bepo because they have a place in this list, I hope you don’t mind! 💕

Massages

1. Marco- for one, he’s a doctor. And despite his job and position and everything, his hands are surprisingly soft. He knows the perfect amount of pressure to use as well as where to specifically massage to get rid of tension. He likes lavender oil or lotion. He doesn’t have a lot of time to do this, so it doesn’t happen a lot, so when it does it’s very romantic- candles and everything. Usually silent, but he’ll lean down and kiss you occasionally, whispering sweet words.

2. Robin- okay her devil fruit power? I mean come on. It’s so calm and quiet, a very peaceful atmosphere. She always uses lavender or floral scents and lets you talk about your day or she’ll hum a random tune, maybe tell you a story. She uses her devil fruit power to massage multiple places, like both your shoulders as well as your lower back and arms.

3. Law- another doctor so he knows the places where certain muscles are, he knows certain techniques and pressure points to rid you of all tension and pain. He likes to use scented candles and oils, mostly vanilla or lavender, calming scents. He likes this activity because it’s quiet and intimate, a moment for just the two of you.

4. Rosinante- okay I know I know, but hear me out; yes he’s clumsy, but he can learn. His movements are slow and gentle, he focuses intensely so he doesn’t mess up and hurt you. He’ll listen to your every word, if you want him to use more pressure or less, or if there’s a certain place that’s sore/hurting. He’s like Law in the fact that he likes this because it’s an intimate activity. He likes to give you massages when you’re stressed so while he works you can talk to him.

5. Chopper- another one who’s on here because he’s a doctor, but also because he’s just so sweet and concerned during it, wondering if he’s hurting you. He loves sweet scented lotions and he prefers to have conversations, about your day, interests, dreams, just everything.

Making you laugh

1. Shanks- it’s almost always purely his action. When he’s drunk or really just doing anything that’s not important. He will do practically anything to get you to laugh, he’s great at silly faces. Tickles, this man loves tickles, givig or recieving. I feel like he also has those moments where you laugh so hard it starts sounding really wierd and funny, like ugly laughing, and it’s hilarious.

2. Rosinante- again it’s mostly his everyday actions. When he falls (and doesn’t hurt himself too bad) it’s funny, and lighting himself on fire. You also have like thise language of looks, if Doffy says something stupid or is acting like a diva, Rosinante will look at you like “here we go again”. He actually also trips on purpose sometimes, because he knows you find it funny. He also knows jokes, mostly puns, mostly stupid ones. But he laughs at them so much and so hard that it makes it funny. He’s also good at tickles

3. Luffy- also purely his actions, just everything. He lives to make you smile and he’ll do anything. He uses his devil fruit to stretch his cheeks or to let you play with his face like it’s puddy. He loves tickles too, and he loves peppering you with really fast, kind of reckless little kisses that tickle. Him and Shanks are pretty similar in the ways they make their S/O laugh.

4. Usopp- his stories, I mean come on. He loves making you smile ad laugh with his stories, he’ll make them as farfetched as he can but still stick to them and claim it’s true, just because you find it funny. He’ll make up stories so unbelievably stupid that you know they can’t be true, but Usopp will still say it happened because it makes you laugh more.

5. Buggy- I feel like this doesn’t need an explanation- he’s literally a clown. For one, his nose and the fact he always thinks people are insulting him, it’s hilarious. His interactions with his crew are just pure comedic gold. He’ll get embarrassed at his actions sometimes, but when he sees you laughing he’ll forget about anyone around that’s probably judging him and just focus on your smile and laugh. And his little stubble tickles a lot whenever he kisses you, sometimes he just nuzzle shis face against you because it you laugh at the sensation.

Helping you achieve your goals

1. Luffy- doesn’t really need an explanation, we all know how he is about helping people achieve their dreams. He’ll help you with anything you need, always there to protect you, cheer you up, etc. Not to mention this man is the loyalist. He’s willing to do anything no matter how extreme, I mean as long as it’s not cruel because that’s where he draws the line.

2. Ace- similar to his brother, except he’s a little bit more... ferocious? Like remember when he went after Blackbeard? He would have that persistence. He’s also very ambitious. Like Luffy, he’s very loyal and will have your back no matter what you’re trying to do. But he also knows what you shouldn’t do, like if he knows something is going to kill you/hurt you badly, he’ll tell you. But he’ll be there to pick you up when you fall, to encourage you if you lose confidence or lose your drive.

3. Bepo- we all see how much he helps Law, how comforting, caring, loyal, and encouraging he is. He’s more ofthe type to follow your orders to help you accomplish whatever, but he’s also like a reassuring presence- you always know you have someone. He’s always got your back and he’s great at pep talks and comforting cuddles.

4. Gol D. Roger- so I’m kind of going of of my thoughts here, but he’s like the type to ecncourage you and stand behind you no matter what. He’s ready to lend a hand or cheer you up, protect you and offer you apiece of mind. He’ll distract you from the hardships and keeps everything fun, he takes the pressure off of you. Having him by your side feels like someone has your back. at all times, which he does. He won’t judge you for your goals either. Whatever you want to achieve he’ll just be there for whatever and whenever you need.

5. Kaido- HEAR ME OUT- for Kaido’s S/O he would literally destory an island. He’s more of the “I’ll kill anyone and destory anything” type. He’ll kill anyone who’s standing in your way, threaten anyone, really he would do anything. He’s Kaido, he can do anything. He’s not the best with words, he’s probably the worst, so he shows how he cares through actions- usually violent actions. His “pep-talks” or his version of pep talks, are pretty aggressive and blunt and to the point, but it still works if you can handle it. I can not stress this, ask him to kill someone or destroy something and consider it done.

Kissing

1. Mihawk- perfect. I mean just by looking at the man you know he’s a good kisser. He can do slow, fast, passionate, rough, anything. Literally every kiss takes your breath away. He usually cups your cheek, places his hand on the nape of your neck, or holds the back of your head- but he always hold your hand.

2. Cavendish- again just looking at the man you know he’s a good kisser. Very similar to Mihawk, he takes your breath away and he can do a variety of different kisses. But he loves french kissing or soft and tender, always holds you during the moment and after.

3. Sanji- everyone should have expected him to be here somewhere. Just amazing at any types of kisses, he’s a lot like Cavendish except Sanji tends to let his hand explore or rest on the more... naughty? parts. You have to get passed the nosebleeds but once you do it’s amazing- he puts all of his love into his kisses.

4. Shanks- mostly experience. He knows how to make you weak in your knees and take your breath away, he can make the moment go from romantic to sexy in the blink of an eye. His kisses tend to be sloppy but they always make you feel protected and loved. He likes kissing your neck and it’s also his favorite place to be kissed.

5. Doflamingo- 9/10 of the time rough and fast and heated. It’s like he has control over you, and really you don’t mind. Kissing him feels like your protected and safe and you don’t have to worry about anything. Kisses are one of the ways Doffy shows he cares because he’s so bad at words.

The Magnus Archives IS a Podcast-- How The Web Literally Wrote This Story

So we’ve all listened to MAG 197 (if you haven’t READ NO FURTHER!) but I am genuinely serious about the topic of this post!

I’ve seen a lot of predictions swirling around regarding the nature of MAG 200, and a lot of us seem to think that the next universe the fears are going to defect to is ours. Frankly, I agree-- but I’d like to put forth what I think is a more specific theory about the way that events will ensue.

All 4 Magnus seasons follow a predictable pattern in terms of their episodes-- the second to last is action-packed and climatic where the last episode (ALWAYS statement form) is the resolution. MAG 200 will be in statement form in some way or another, not straight dialogue. Jonny’s a writer who enjoys parallelism, and finishing the series with a statement is both a reflection of Magnus’s unique medium and the precedents of the previous seasons.

The question here is what will this statement be ABOUT? Everything’s wrapped up. All of the strings will be tied. Unlike the previous seasons, where cliffhangers and anxiety regarding the outcome of the next season were horror fuel, MAG 200 has to have that little bit of loose thread to stir something in the audience. So what’ll MAG 200 be?

A warning.

Not just any warning, though. It’ll be Jon’s statement to us, the residents of the world the fears have defected to, and I’ll go as far as to say that it’ll directly parallel MAG 161 (Gertrude’s warning to the future archivist, with a possible dialogue interlude from the past aka post-change Scottish Safehouse era.) I think it’ll finish off his character arc, explain why he’s using the tape to record this statement (as a throwback to MAG 1!) and stir up some terror (”if you’re hearing this....”)

Don’t forget--the tapes are the web, and therefore malevolent in nature. I find it incredibly unlikely that anything will be recorded after the world changes back-- the tapes will ideally be sucked into the hole on Hilltop Road if all goes well. If the tapes go into the hole, though? That’s how we’ll get to hear Jon’s statement and are hearing this entire story contextualizing it.

But wait! I hear you saying. The tapes are web! How the fuck would we be hearing this if the web’s behind it ALL?? Why would they want us to hear about this story and the people who stood against them?

Well. Hm. MAG 197 gave us a big fat clue. Well, two clues, actually:

ANNABELLE

We found the one we believed most likely to bring about their manifestation. We marked him young, guided his path as best we could. And then, we took his voice.

ARCHIVIST

No…

ANNABELLE

His, and those he walked with. We inscribed them on shining strands of word and meaning, and used them to weave a web which cast itself out through the gate and beyond our universe. So that when the Fears heard that voice, and came in their terrible glory, they might then travel out along it.

Or be dragged.

BASIRA

Is she talking about the tapes?

ARCHIVIST

Yes.

AND

ARCHIVIST

We can pass them our apocalypse.

ANNABELLE

Nothing so extreme. In these new worlds they would exist as they used to in ours, lurking just beyond the threshold.

ARCHIVIST

Until someone is stupid enough to release them there, as well.

ANNABELLE

Perhaps. Even the Mother cannot see the future. Only try to shape it.

All of this is very interesting phrasing.

Let’s break it down. Part I almost seems like... a writer. “Inscribing words of meaning?” It’s a very interesting choice of words to describe the Web’s MO--spiders “weave” rather than “inscribe.”

The first time I heard this paragraph, I thought she was referring to the Change of MAG 160, what with the “door opening” and all and Jon’s inability to stop reading the statement. And while I feel as if this statement absolutely confirms that the Web was what forced Jon to keep reading (Jonah being in somewhat of kahoots with the Web but not understanding its entire plan is a theory for another day) I think that there’s a lot more here than that. The Web didn’t just “take his [Jon’s] voice”, it took the voices of “those he walked with.” Literally everyone else Jon has interacted with--most notably the main cast. Jon became the narrator or rather the Archivist. Unbeknownst to him and the others on tape, their stolen voices were “cast through the gate and beyond our universe.” Guys. That’s us. We’re the ones listening to this from beyond the TMA universe.

The Web used the podcast to form a bond with our reality that the fears could use as a PATH when the apocalypse stops in the world of TMA. When we all started listening, we got dragged in. Like a fly caught in a web. LIKE PREY TO THE LURE OF AN ANGLERFISH.

Basira and Jon’s next lines basically confirm this, too. Basira specifically asks if Annabelle’s talking about the tapes. Jon says yes, and doesn’t elaborate further. It’s a perfect indication that Annabelle’s not talking about the one-off accidental kickstarting of the apocalypse--Jon would clarify that if she was. She’s talking about the fact that literally every moment they had of the crew on record formed a tether with our reality.

Part II provides even more insight into the why. WHY would the web want to tell us the story about The Magnus Archives? What’s the ulterior motive here?

It’s simple: The Web (and the fears) do not want to die and probably want to live in our dimension for a very long time. As Annabelle says--they can only try to “shape the future”, and they will do all they can to survive. The Web is the system incarnate, and for the Web, it’s all a show. The Web feeds off of its victims by pushing them in directions and gaslighting them by telling them they’re where they are because of their actions and their actions alone. It doesn’t think like us. The Web thinks that we will take The Tragedy of Jonathan “I refuse to become another mystery” Sims like the Web domain audience received the tragedy of Francis: Through laughter. As something to be mocked or scorned. The Web thinks we’ll see Jon himself as a cautionary tale. Someone who (from the beginning) was too curious for their own good. After all--Jon marked himself with the impulsive decisions he made-- grabbing the tape with the worms, breaking the table, going out for a cigarette confronting the avatars, entering Michael’s corridors, etc etc. Look how many people died! Look how the world suffered! It’s because he was “beholding,” he questioned the world around him, he made people uncomfortable by holding the system accountable. He “made the choice.” He opened the door.

But that’s just it! That’s ALL BULLSHIT, and we know it! And that’s how this fits into the heart of TMA. The recurring thematic elements of choices and consequences and free will and the beloved capitalism metaphor. This is why slightly breaking the fourth wall works so fucking well for this story. We have empathy, unlike the system, and it’s our pathos that will inadvertently help us kill the Web in our own world!

Individuals are not born apocalyptic lynchpins. They’re made, pushed, into becoming monsters and/or helpless witnesses to horrors of uncontrollable magnitudes. The individual is not the evil. It’s the brutal, ugly system that has us tearing at each other, mocking each other, blaming one another for universal maladies. The status quo would listen to The Magnus Archives like it’s teaching you to keep your head down and stay out of trouble. People, real people, listen to The Magnus Archives and hear the words of over a hundred unique statement givers, Tim’s jokes, Jon’s protectiveness over Sasha’s memory, [fabric rustles], and What the Girlfriend’s conversations. The love, not the loss, is more audible than the warning that fearlessness is shortsighted and silly in the insignificant blip of human life. (That’s what the spiders want you to think!)

Personally would love to see a Kirby slice of life anime with the occasional specials of his big adventures.

We get to see the characters interact outside of the game, and it would be enjoyable to see the crew in these silly little senarios like: Bandana dee losing his bandana, Kirby makes a cake, Magolor's theme park, etc.

There can be character developing moments in there as well, since the franchise itself likes to do that with the games.

But in general, just something you can sit down and watch to make all your problems go away. :)

I agree. I think something like this would be really fun! Plus, it would have a lot of good character interaction.

Hello! I've seen your comments on how you change a few things when writing the characters, and I really think it's fascinating! I really enjoy see your version, because they are never OOC (I don't know how you do this magic).

And thinking of that, I have some questions...

Do you have your characters versions ready and figured out before you start writing your fics? How is this process of finding out how you want to write them?

And also what are your thoughts on Nessian in ACSF that you felt the need to change them a little? Did you like them? Did you like the book?

I don't think I ever saw your opinion and I really like how you articulate your answers. And I hope I'm not overstepping with all these questions 🥺

This got so long, sorry in advance!

Thank you! I know that character extrapolation isn’t for everyone, but to me it’s what writing fic is about! I like to think I am very intentional with the additions/character expansions I’ve made in my fics, often seeking to expand areas I felt were left somewhat underdeveloped in canon. (Illyrian culture, anyone??)

I also have a personal preference for setting my modern AUs in the real world, so you will never see a modern Rhysand living in skyscraper in Velaris or modern Aelin being described as a Terrasenian (?) citizen. That is not an indictment of the many incredible writers who do structure their modern AUs this way, i just find it easy to ground my modern stories in a world I can easily research if I need details (a restaurant for them to visit, a street for them to live on, etc)

As far as “editing” character personalities from canon, i think the key for me is trying to understand who the character is at their core, and altering the elements that I personally don’t feel jive with those core motivations.

I’ve talked a lot about writing canon Nesta, and how I’ve pivoted the Archeron sisters’ relationship based on my own experience as the youngest of three daughters. I just didn’t always feel their interactions rang true, particularly in ACOSF.

And since you asked…

I think enough time has passed now that I can just be honest and say I didn’t love ACOSF. I didn’t hate it, but I can’t say I would give it any more than a 5/10. To me, the story wasn’t properly paced, which made for a plot that was slow in some places and rushed in others.

Also—and I cannot believe I am saying this—but there was too much smut. There was a lot of elements that deserved to be fleshed out and wasn’t (HELLO ILLYRIAN CULTURE??) and the smut was largely all the same to me, which made it boring and repetitive. (Also calm down with the bodily fluids my GOD)

In terms of Nessian, I would say their resolution was acceptable, if not particularly satisfying. Obviously I’m biased because if you know me you know that I hate the mating bond, but it IRKED me that Cassian was foaming at the mouth to call Nesta “mate” but never said, “I love you”. I get that he does loved her, but I feel like it would have been nice to get to hear it and get Nesta’s reaction.

Speaking of OOC, I think Rhys’s characterization was a disaster and directly negated his characterization in prior books for the sake of drama. We don’t need to get into it, but Rhys would never keep a secret of that magnitude from Feyre, especially considering the implications with their bargain to die together. Rhys has sacrificed everything for the sake of his people—he would never not make a contingency plan in the event of his death. That is what I mean by rushed. The book was so busy touting itself as steamy and new adult that it forgot to actually write a compelling plot and believable character interactions.

I like the idea that Rhys and Nesta’s relationship is fraught and he is bias and unfair in his interactions with her because that’s very realistic, but it was never actually resolved by them reaching an understanding. We deserved a scene of Rhys and Nesta coming to an understanding and a place of mutual respect for one another, and we never got it.

As far as Nesta’s journey went, it as generally fine, if somewhat rushed. I think her relationship with the Inner Circle was never really hashed out meaningfully, which made their “reconciliation” at the end feel empty and forced.

I really appreciated Nesta finding her own crew and making her own life, with ONE exception (and this is personal preference, not an indictment of people who liked it) but I fucking 👏🏼 hated 👏🏼 the sleepover with Nesta, Emerie, and Gwyn. Not because I didn’t love seeing them bond, but because *NO* part of Nesta’s characterization before or after suggested she was the kind of person who would have liked having what amounted to a make-believe tea party with mini ponies and cake. I would have preferred them laying around talking about books until dawn, or going together to see a dance performance. I just found the interaction so OOC that it rang false. Nesta being happy doesn’t mean that she suddenly must be silly to prove it! Gwyn and Emerie both love and accept Nesta for who she is—an introvert and with an cerebral disposition . Silly and happy are not the same thing, and one needn’t act indulge in childhood activities to prove they are unburdened and happy.

As always I’ve gone on too long, but the bottom line is that I try and consider what motivates a character, and I make sure that their actions reflect that motivation realistically. That causal relationship is the heart of good characterization, and is also the reason that I found ACoSF ‘meh’ at best.

loved reading all your acting thoughts! there's been some talk in fandom lately about how gallavich kisses have changed over the course of the last 2 seasons and seem a bit awkward and perfunctory at times even vs. earlier seasons where they seemed much more 'natural' for lack of a better word. wondered if you had also observed this and had thoughts on this from an acting perspective. it sounds like the show got an intimacy coordinator recently and part of me wonders if that led to the change since noel and cam clearly didnt have issues throwing themselves into those scenes previously. i'm also still trying to wrap my head around the hos bloopers kiss and how that would have fit in (scripted or improv) but that's probably a whole other can of worms. they clearly seem very comfortable with each other after having worked together for so long, which is wonderful! anyway, just love hearing you talk about acting and cam and noel :)

thanks for the question, it’s a super interesting one. so i discussed this quite a bit with @xgoldendays – because we discuss everything. so michelle feel free to add your take if you want to! <3

i’ve seen this conversation happen a lot on my various timelines in the last few days and honestly, kisses are kisses to me – idk maybe it’s because i’ve been watching the show for years and lived off the club kiss for an entire season, but the shift between kisses old vs new hasn’t really been significant enough to bother me. anyhow here’s my actor-y thoughts...

firstly, an intimacy coordinator isn’t going to be like ‘don’t shove your tongue down each other’s throat’ – an intimacy coordinator is there to make sure no one is being exploited or taken advantage of during intimate scenes. it’s very unlikely that their introduction in the crew had very little impact on the way cam and noel kiss each other in the scenes. what is more likely to have impacted the way that they kiss is the writing.

the club kiss, border kiss, docks kiss etc... are all born from moments that are very heightened. the stakes are HIGH, mickey and ian have things to say and things to lose with those kisses. noel and cam have a lot more to work with and sink their teeth into. we know as a fact that they improv-ed a lot of the docks scene – this naturally leads to more reactive and real responses. even in scenes where they’re not improv-ing, eg: the club kiss, the situation they’re in is so significant for both characters, so fuelled by the drama, that of course it’ll result in a passionate kiss. those moments are so much easier to ground yourself in as an actor. it’s okay for a silly horny kiss in an ambulance to be less. it’s okay for the good morning mr gallavich kitchen kiss to be less. those scenes are less. i understand why people would compare them, but it’s a little silly to me cause ian and mickey are in completely different places now. cam and noel are going to be interacting with those scenes differently now.

i go on about it quite a bit, but there’s no stakes in the writing anymore. they’re married now, they’re not leaving each other at the mexico border worried they won’t see each other ever again, it’s okay for a kiss to be boring or less than the ones that have come before it because the show is different now. ian and mickey are different people than they were. cam and noel will have a different experience filming those scenes – they’re not going to be filled with as much passion or drama. in the grand scheme of the dramatic story of ian and mickey, their scenes now are boring – and that’s okay! and for cam and noel they’re gonna be less exciting and interesting to film! their acting is still very much rooted in truth, but given the lack of stakes and significance of those kisses, things are gonna be different! it’s completely understandable to me that they seem different. they’re still clearly very comfortable with each other (you can tell that by the hos kiss) but, imo, it’s simply that the scenes have less behind them, therefore their kisses have less behind them. like, i’m sure if the show actually allowed a truly pivotal moment for them again (take the proposal kiss for example, we know there was a lot cut in the editing room and that was a moment in the last few seasons WITH higher stakes) things may be different.

in regards to the hos kiss – it’s up for your interpretation but i like thinking about it as just a silly extra gallavich kiss, rather than a moment of improv tacked onto the end of that episode. don’t think too hard about fitting it into the canon storyline, just let yourself enjoy it for what it was! <3

although it might be odd at first to pair him with a sensitive and introverted soul such as yourself, on the contrary, kaeya won’t have any issues relating to your emotional nature, even if outwardly it doesn’t seem so (behind his light-hearted and diplomatic dialogue, he’s got a transactional relationship with the knights he’s “loyal” to; his own brother is distasteful towards him; and he’s got an agenda that goes against everything he currently lives with.) he’ll get a knack out of teasing you when the mood is fitting, and while he may not be the one to give you the best of pep-talks, his self-assured disposition does have its uses: confident words soothe over the creases of your worries and troubling thoughts, and when things are more light-hearted, the two of you will bounce off of each others’ playful mannerism.

I just finished DBH and Im seriously so in love with it! But when I came on Tumblr, all I could find is all this content around Gavin, and Im just so confused, because he seemed like such a jerk in the game. Why are people so into Gavin? Did I miss something?

Hi there!

First off, allow me to welcome you to the fandom!

In regards to Gavin: you literally did not miss anything; he is absolutely a one dimensional jerk in game!

Its important we make a distinction here between fanon Gavin and canon Gavin. You’ll find the fandom is incredibly divided - a lot of people adore him, a lot of people hate him. The reason for disliking him is understandable, of course - there’s a slew of incredible and well rounded characters in dbh (North, Luther, Kara…) that are swept under the rug in favour of a veritable avalanche of content for rat man reed. He has 14 minutes of screen time in which literally all he does is antagonize and threaten the player. But people have to understand, when someone says they love Gavin, they mean fanon Gavin. I don’t think theres a single person that is actually a canon Gavin stan.

Keeping that in mind, you also have to take into account the drop off - at this point, the only people still left/creating content in the fandom are generally the ones that are balls deep and clinging to the headcanons, au’s, etc. that they’ve built with friends. This applies heavily to Gavin for reasons discussed below. Additionally, the algorithms for sites like tumblr and instagram won’t recommend old posts; old posts don’t show up in tags. Artists with a lot of clout that have since moved on from the fandom’s work have basically disappeared into the void (rebelflet, for example). So it may seem like there’s only content of Gavin / Gavin ships, but in reality there’s a ton of jericrew and Kara crew out there from when the fandom was still new / bigger - you just have to know where to look.

So… why do people like Gavin… I mean, it helps that canonically he has beefy tiddies, a cool bad boy jacket, and a pretty face at certain angles.

That being said, I think one of the biggest reasons Gavin (and RK900, by extension) are so popular is that they aren’t well rounded, fleshed out characters. Because we don’t really know anything about them and they have minimal screen time, they’re easy to project on or to add onto, and no one can tell you that you’re wrong because there’s no evidence against it. It’s almost like a universally shared OC that the fandom has developed together. Since they have no canon backstory, and in rk900’s case, no canon personality, it allows for a lot of creative freedom and the ability to explore character interactions, foils, and growth within the dbh universe. The growth aspect, I think, in conjunction with the projection aspect, is key point for the popularity. It tends to be fairly formulaic. Take the canonical asshole Gavin, stick him with an android - whether its RK900 as his partner or Connor as a coworker. Have him come to care for the RK model, and deal with his own insecurities (and usually a traumatic past, the flavor of which might depend on the creator’s own life struggles). Repent, redeem, grow. This redemption arc is the same exact vein of growth and change that makes Hank and Connor such an appealing partnership for players as well - only, in Gavin’s case, it allows for complete freedom in how to get from point a to point b. People like a character they can relate to - and when you can smack your own possible trauma (being an illegitimate child, having an abusive lover, abusive parents, abandonment fears, body insecurity, whatever it may be) on a character because they’re a blank slate, you relate to them and vent through them. Even little “silly” projections or projections that aren’t necessarily traumatic can make someone love a character even more - for example, “Gavin loves Hello Kitty,” “Gavin can’t handle spicy food,” “Gavin is Latino.” Even when the creator isn’t projecting, adding these kinds of headcanons make him a fleshed out, three dimensional character that people can relate to or empathize with, especially when giving his actions an explanation besides just fear of losing his job.

I came into the dbh fandom a little late; by the time I knew what it was, the hype had died down and reed900 was already a firmly cemented, heavily present part of the content. Given that, I’m not sure what its exact origins were, or if it seemingly popped up overnight. It could have been crack. My best guess is that people saw the positive change between Hank and Connor, and thought, “Hey, wouldn’t it be rad if we stuck the other Connor with the other dysfunctional DPD bastard?” . I admit, it makes a nice parallel, which may be part of the appeal in additional to the previous reasons. Speaking of those kinds of interpersonal relationships, there’s also a popular headcanon (that’s been mentioned/liked by d*vid c*ge himself) that Kamski and Gavin are siblings/half siblings/cousins. This stems from the fact that Kamski and Gavin are both mo-capped/voiced by the same actor. By taking this headcanon into account, it adds depth to Gavin’s hatred of androids and allows for interesting backstory exploration, growth, and reconciliation.

Another reason is the enemies-to-lovers trope. For a lot of people that trope really jimmies their neutrons, and what could be better than an android hater and an android to fit that cliche? Once again, analogous to hankcon. The angst potential is also incredible when you take convin or hankvin into account instead of reed900 - reading into Hank and Gavin’s interactions it would seem there’s a tumultuous past between them. And in Connor’s case, Gavin can actually kill him or he can KO Gavin, which allows for a good deal of enemies-to-lovers and angsty regret material. Besides, a lot of people are really into hate s*x.

That…. makes a good segway. I may as well mention the elephant in the room for Gavin’s popularity. There’s a culture of fetishizing abuse in fandoms and Gavin is a prime target for this because “”he’s asking for it.”” It’s also easy to make one character a psychopath when they don’t even have a canon personality. This shows up a lot, whether because of writers treating it as a kink in fanfic or artists using it as a gag because its “funny”. I… won’t really go into detail on this, but it is a phenomenon that adds to the slew of Gavin content. This is another reason for why a lot of people hate Gavin / hate reed900. I started out feeling this way as well. Their perception of it is coloured by the abusive stuff or the mishandled stuff that seems to be prominent. I just have to say that this blog is a safe, sane, and consensual zone.

Sorry, that was a really long breakdown but I hope that gives some insight into the Gavin phenomenon. Last point. He winks like a dumbass. How can you not love that face.

I’ve been tagged by @yossariandawn Thanks for thinking of me! and for all the great questions! (and sorry it took so long. I had a hard time thinking of 10 questions of my own.)

Answer 10 questions, ask 10 questions, tag 10 people.

1. If you could learn a new skill instantly, what would you choose? I’m not sure. I think that if it’s a skill you really enjoy than taking the time to learn becomes part of the enjoyment, so it’d have to be a skill I either only kind of wanted or that I felt was a need over a want. Oo, MMA, good exercise and the ability to defend myself or someone else if I ever need to, and it’s not something I feel really passionately about going through the process of learning.

2. What part of the world (that you’ve never been to) would you choose to live in for a month? Hyère, France. Don’t even have to think about it. About eight years ago I was planning a move and it was on the short list of places I was considering going to. The climate seemed the most ideal to what I wanted to live in and all the pictures were beautiful.

3. Favorite kind of sandwich or wrap? Grilled cheese? I don’t like sandwiches (or wraps) typically.

4. Show swap! Bring back 3 shows you love, but you also have to choose 3 you like to cancel instead. Oo, gotta think about this one. I don’t want to bring back a show that was already past its peak and I don’t want to say to cancel a show that isn’t ready to end.

Cancel: (I stuck only with shows that I watch and enjoy so I’m not digging at any show just because it’s not my personal preference)

NCIS – I love the show, seen every last episode and will continue watching it until the end, but it’s time for it to wrap up. It well past its prime.

Lucifer – Listen, I love this show, and there’s a ton of great characters and material here to make a long running series, but they have started going in circles with it and that’s making it feel old. How many times can the same characters learn the same lessons before it just feels like the writers are just forcing things back into the same ol’ mold? Let the story grow or move on.

Shameless – It’s a stretch because the finale season has already been declared, but it’s a show that I don’t really need that finale season, even if I will watch and enjoy it, because it’s reached its natural end.

Bring back:

From Dusk till Dawn: the series – I debated on this one. It wrapped everything up so nicely and I’m quite happy with how it ended, but at the same time the writers had plans for the next season and it was never officially cancelled and there’s so much more story that could be told.

Firefly – Although it’s been enough time that it might have to be more of a reboot maybe? Or are we doing the impossible and it’s coming back shortly after it was canceled? Either way, that show was cancelled way too soon.

The Gifted – Yes, it was a bit cheesy but it’s just as good, if not better than, a lot of the comicbook shows still going AND it ended on a cliffhanger. It needed to continue

5. What fandom would you want to get into, but haven’t yet? I don’t know. I feel like I don’t exactly pick my fandoms. I start watching a show or go see a movie or read a book and then if I feel like looking up fandom stuff after I do.

6. What show or movie do you watch to cheer you up? Probably Community. It’s a good show that has that nice balance of being a ridiculous comedy, but not too silly at the same time. And it hits so many of my favorite tropes. (Leverage could also count.)

7. Favorite condiments? ….salt? That’s technically a seasoning, but I am not a condiment fan. They are mostly gross and just cover up the flavor the food with their grossness.

8. What characters (from different universes) do you think would love hanging out together? Pick as many as you want. I wrote for fun a Kisa (FDtD) and Troy (Community) scene and discovered I really like them interacting (there was other people in the scene, but they stole all my attention in a matter of moments). They connected in a weird way and I loved writing Kisa’s bizarre and confused reactions to Troy. Britta (Community) and Richie (FDtD) would get along well I think. They’d click in that odd way that Richie has with random people and Britta would be a little too oblivious to Richie’s more social flaws/creepy nature, as is her way when it comes to guys with even the tiniest bit of charm and intelligence. Not gonna lie, I kind of ship them now.

I would also put Shawn from Psych with the entire Leverage crew. Sophie is the only one I feel would find him a bit much at times, mainly because she can spot a grift a mile away and Shawn’s kind of always “on” and think it would mess with her trust issues too much for her to be entirely comfortable around him. Nate sees his potential, especially if Shawn’s been brought in to help on a job, and the guy is ultimately one of the Good Guys, and he would go a long way to helping put Sophie at ease. Because Nate’s too smart to be taken in by someone like Shawn and Sophie wouldn’t feel like she’s the only one who sees him for the conartist he is. Eliot would groan and grumble for show, but in the end Shawn’s like a combination of his two favorite people in the world; Parker and Hardison. Plus, I headcanon Shawn and Eliot as cousins. I think Hardison might find Shawn a little too like himself to ever be best buddies with the guy, but overall they’d get along just fine. As for Parker... I feel like they’d be almost like two kids on the playground who both found out they like the same obscure cartoon none of the other kids have seen.

I have a little headcanon about Parker (Leverage) and Clint Barton (MCU) having been in the same foster home as kids and having this kind of a past-sibling-esque connection. I like to think that with both their careers they don’t meet up often, but whenever they realize they are in the same place at the same time, it’s a given that they’ll hang out while there.

My roommate keeps yelling over my shoulder Starlord and Micheal (from the movie starring John Travolta) until I agreed to put them. They would get along in a weird sort of fun way that would be fun to watch but hard to be a part of, but since I haven’t see that movie since I was a kid it’s not one I think of.

9. What’s the most underrated show or movie or book or artist that you love and people should really check out?

Ilona Andrews is an amazing author and more people should check their works out. But the most underrated show I think I’ve ever gotten into… honestly would probably be From Dusk till Dawn. I feel like most of my followers are at least aware of it though because I post enough about it, but it was just really good and sort of cut off before its time. A really close second would be Leverage. It’s still the number one show I recommend when people ask me and I just adore it to pieces.

10. What were you obsessed with as a kid?

So many things, but probably Jasmine from Disney’s Aladdin the most. Pretty sure I named more than one stuffed animal after her.

I decided I wanted to give my two cents on steven universe since today is the anniversary, and the main show is over until we get the epilogue series.

Steven Universe is a fantastic show. When I started watching about 4 years ago, I was skeptical. It seemed like another simple CN show about a fat kid with superpowers, and the comedy would be about fat jokes and silly faces. Boy, I’m glad I was wrong.

I originally got into the show because I heard that it had LGBT representation, Which surprised me because well, its a cartoon... They wouldn’t do that, right? We all know the controversy Korra stirred up by just holding hands. So as I said, at first the show didn’t impress, but thankfully over time, it showed the shows true colors. It’s not that I mind silly shows, I mean, that's what cartoons can do best, But I’ve grown out of that and prefer shows with a strong narrative. So as Steven Universe progressed, I got more and more invested until I was hooked on the story and characters. Knowing that SU will come to an end once the epilogue series ends, it honestly fills me with sadness and dread, the first real-time a show has done this for me in a while. The show helped teach me how to write real human characters (despite that the gems are alien), characters with flaws, and problems that aren't fixed in one episode but throughout the show. Having them need help but also help themselves. It’s one of the few shows that I wish we have more filler episodes. These characters are so lovable that I just want to see them happy and enjoying each other's company because it’s what they deserve. The show also inspired me from a story writing perspective, doing things slowly with hints as to a larger plan and having it all from a focal character's perspective. Making it, so revelations he makes are the same revelations we see, so it feels natural and healthy. All while shaking up the status quo over and over because characters should change because people change, and as the movie pointed out, change is good. That’s it for my experience on how I started the show and how it helped me.

The show's message is fantastic. ESPECIALLY for a kid’s show, I hope more shows take not on how to tell a story while also dealing with real issues in a real-world manner. Steven Universe is essential for all ages because of how it handles trama and identity. From trama about Lapis’s imprisonment and torture to Spinel’s abandonment, Amethysts self-loathing to Pearl, feeling like she is nothing. This show hits you hard with compelling storytelling and truth. Many young people today are dealing with issues with identity due to gender, expectations, or societal norms. Having a show like this where characters can be happy and put together but still with flaws and wanting to change shows young viewers that it’s okay to be you, and I think that is wonderful.

Let's talk about the show itself in terms of its strengths and weaknesses. As I’ve said, the show has a compelling story where it’s built over time with characters changing throughout the show as new things happen or old issues arise. It’s actually smart how they did it, having episodes where the problems are small at first, like a together breakfast or gem maze. Then sprinkling in Episodes or lore or character development between them like cat fingers and giant woman. So it engages audience members who were here for the silly with exciting moments to keep them watching more. On that note, I want to point out that Season 1A gets a lot of flak for being ‘ all filler,’ but after rewatching the show, I realize it had a whole lot of essential episodes in it, or even the smaller ones established recurring characters, little bits of lore or were brought up later. I believe the reason it's so panned is that Season 1A does still have writing awkwardness at points, so when compared to the complex and subtle writing later, it seems weaker in comparison. Now obviously, the show isn’t perfect, with the problem of inconsistent models at times. Funny enough, I rewatched the show after the movie, and I barely, if ever, noticed the different models because the story and character moments were strong enough to distract from it. Or the hiatus’s (which is not the fault of the creators as stated by the crew members multiple times, it’s CN’s horrible scheduling and bias towards one particular show...). But for me, I have one big problem with the show, and it is the townie episodes. NOT for the reason, others hate them though, most people hate them because they consider them filler compared to the larger story about the diamonds and rose and etc. But I argue that establishing beach city not only makes the stakes matter more because now steven has to worry how his actions affect them, but it makes the setting feel less empty and like a set-piece. No, the problem I have with the townie episodes is that the Crystal Gems barely interact with them! It’s evident that the gems have been there since the town was founded, and yet they know very little about humanity still. I would love if the gems interacted more and learned more value of humanity then just ‘they live here too.’ It’s what I’m hoping Steven Universe Future will show because the uncorrupted gems seem to visit the town now.

In the end, Steven universe was and IS a fantastic show that deserves all the praise in the world and will hopefully inspire more complex story-driven cartoons.

Steven Universe - Punching Up

It’s the end of the year and I wanted to spend time reflecting on the Steven Universe comics that I spent the better part of the year writing. I feel like they come out so fast that I don’t have time to properly talk about them. So as the volumes have started coming out, I thought I would take some time to talk about each of the stories featured in each collection!

Issues #5-#8 are collected in this Steven Universe Punching Up, #5-#7 are stories I wrote while #8 was written by the incredible Melanie Gillman! The stories featured in here were some of the first stories I came up with when I pitched them to Boom.

Issue # 5 - A Day in the Life of Lion

I always thought it might be fun to make a story featuring the kind of mischief Lion gets up to when Steven is around, which seems to be like 80% of the time. I also remember there was a Steven Universe panel a while back where a little kid asked where Lion was, so I thought kids might enjoy a Lion story too.

I was honestly a little surprised I was allowed to do this since it’s a departure of the Steven’s point of view only that the show goes for. I normally try to keep to that in writing the comics but thought it might be fun to deviate away from it slightly.

This story is essentially a series of vignettes about Lion’s day, so pretty much exactly what the title says. I always love those episodes in a show where they deviate away from the usual story and story-telling format where we get a glimpse into the life of a character we don’t see as often but their POV on events is refreshing. I also love those stories about the secret life that pets lead when their humans aren’t around a la Hamtaro. Sadly Lion does not have a fun crew of other magical lions to go on adventures with, but he still gets up to some innocent mischief around Beach City.

Lion and cat Amethyst’s shenanigans were definitely inspired by a super old comic I made about them interacting. I always thought it would be cute if Lion was curious about cat Amethyst and took care of her like a little kitten. Cat pals!

Lion messing up the things in Pearl’s room is definitely taken from many an experience of my dog doing the same. He gets into anything that isn’t behind a closed door or out of his reach, and it’s not unusual to come home the a grand mess. Sadly no matter what you say he won’t understand you, only act innocent and leave the scene of the crime. Thus Lion is no different.

Lion’s adventures on the boardwalk were fun. Sadie and Greg are some of my favorite humans, so I enjoyed giving them a little spotlight, especially with their wariness yet acceptance of the magical pink lion that inhabits Beach City.

I thought a short detour to Rose’s fountain would be a nice peaceful, introspective moment within the comic. But even when it seems a little deep, Lion still has his cat antics and moves on.

I also wanted to give Lapis and Peridot a little spotlight since I always enjoy their barn life shenanigans. I’m really happy with how Meg captured each of their personalities in this scene, it translated very well from the script!

Lion finally gets his lizard prey after traumatizing Peridot. Honestly I still have no idea what those lizards are. Tiny gem mutants? Gem-infuenced fauna?? Whatever they are Lion eats them so I continue to add them in. And of course I had to end these adventures with a brief encounter with Garnet, who has a silent understanding of Lion. And then bookending it with Connie and Steven’s return, blissfully unaware that Lion even moved from the spot they left him.

Peach Panther and Purple Puma

My inspiration for this was Amethyst’s line to Pearl in “Back to the Barn” when she says “Hey Pearl, you should come wrestling with me sometime!” I thought it would be fun to revisit the wrestling ring once more in the comics, Tiger Millionaire was one of my favorite season 1 episodes and we pretty much had seen the last of it in the show after “Tiger Philanthropist.” Thus, this is supposed to take place later in time than it appears based on Amethyst’s season 1 attire in this issue, but sometimes miscommunication happens in the higher management.

I wanted to write a story where Pearl gets out of her comfort zone and lets loose for a while. When I first wrote this story, I was still dealing with burnout and insecurity after my previous job ended, and I channeled that frustration into this story. At the same time, this is also one of my more self-indulgent stories in that it’s filled with a lot of things I like (Beach City Underground Wrestling, Pearl and Amethyst having a fun time together, cute character shenanigans etc.) so it was great expressing my feelings in a story I especially enjoyed.

Inventing Pearl’s wrestling persona was really fun and I’m grateful to have had to chance to add something fun like that to the comic canon. Between Purple Puma and Tiger Millionaire, I figured Pearl’s persona should match the cat theme, and I really liked the sound of Panther (goes well with Puma). Pink Panther already exists so I tweaked it to be the Peach Panther. I’m super happy that Rii captured the exact look I was going for with Pearl’s outfit. Pearl is not a fan of shapeshifting (and now we know why) so I figured she would be able to at least give herself an outfit and Steven would help jazz it up with the silly pink cat ears.

I’m not the most knowledgable about wrestling so I did a lot of research to get the names of moves right for Mr. Smiley’s commentary. I also had to go back to see what the names of the Beach City wrestling team names were and what the individual fighting names were. It was fun getting to pick my favorites to feature in the comic!

I loved writing the last page because it has those cute, wholesome interactions I am all about in Steven Universe. I’m also super happy with how well my script translated to the final pictures!

The Crystal Gems and the Sea

I love revisiting tiny details from the show in the comics, and this one is no different with the focus on the Gem Sloop from “Cat Fingers.” I thought it would be fun to have the Gems and Steven go on a mission where they couldn’t simply warp there, a fun sea-faring mission! There’s definitely several stories in addition to this one where I figure out a scenario that I’d like the write and then work backwards to figure out how the characters end up there.

Steven and Onion stories tend to involve G.U.Y.S or G.A.L.S one way or another, so I thought it would only be fitting to start the story off with them. While Steven has matured quite a bit from the earlier days of the show, he still has a childish wonder about him, and I figure he still does that thing where he sees something in the spur of the moment and thinks about how fun it would be to also do that thing, and then he finds a way to do so. While he won’t go to the extent of jeopardizing a mission to have fun, if he can still fit some games into a less dire mission then where’s the harm?

I’m really happy with how the character acting came out for the Gems’ and Steven’s interactions. It warms my heart to see how the Gems have grown to trust him more and more as the show progressed. I wanted to add some moments that reflected this growth and had fun writing it in.

Also I have to share the description I wrote for the eel monster because this is the kind of stuff I actually write to give an idea of what I’m trying to describe. She also ended up looking like an aquatic cousin of Centipeetle, and Sea-ntipeetle if you will.

I see some folks picking these comics apart for details that hint at something in the show, but I’ll be completely honest, while I do my best to write close to what’s believable for the show, nothing ties directly to it. Any monsters or instances that seem to hint at something greater are usually just completely coincidental! But it makes me happy that folks enjoy what I add in the comics.

The action panels for the fight are some of my favorites. They came out nice and dynamic are really convey the type of action I was hoping for. Fun and exciting!

I always see some folks complaining about how “townie” episodes are boring filler, but I just can’t disagree more! There’s definitely some townie eps that are among my favorite episodes, because even if they’re not about epic Gem adventures (though some still are) they feature important lessons for Steven to learn from his human half. I thought it would be fun to have Onion and his Dad be integral to the mission because townies and the human half of Steven’s life is just as important and valuable.

And that concludes the issues I worked on in volume 2 of the Steven Universe Ongoing series. I still really love this first batch of comics. Rii and Meg really hit it out of the park and added their personalities to the comics and made for very fun reads!
