for the tsc ask game: 1 2 4 6 7 26 💖🥰 i love the resurgence ur making me want to reread!!!
which tsc series is your favourite overall? why? the infernal devices my beloved.... uniquely gutwrenching compared to the other ones i think. also the most interesting characters by far!!!!
2. which tsc series is your least favourite overall? why? this is a hard one but i think i have to say the last hours simply bc the setup was there and it could've been soooooooo good but it was. just fine. tmi is a wreck but it's interesting to read at least!! i feel more emotions while reading one single jace/clary sibling scene than i did reading all of tlh i think
4. fav short story collection i think the bane chronicles!! i love the other ones too but tbc apparently had such an impact on my brain chemistry as a young teenager that i rewrote tmi in my brain into a version where ragnor actually is a semi important character. he's not he gets mentioned like maybe 6 times total
6. who is your fav main girl CLARY and i will not apologise. i love you insane girl who doesn't handle emotional turmoil gracefully and instead starts verbally and/or physically fighting all the people around her!!!!! she's jealous she's mean she's insecure she's passionate she's catty she's angry she's full of love she's a little crazy i love her sm
7. top 3 characters overall? why?
magnus - do i even have to explain this. he's my bestie forever and i love him so much. to quote myself he's literally a superpowered glittery party catboy turned devoted glittery husband and accidental dad of 2….he’s emotionally repressed he accidentally created a cult he has a life-long obsession with reluctantly helping sad teenagers he’s banned from peru i’m obsessed. he’s even bisexual
jem - loved his homoerotic friendship but truly what makes jem so great is that he has the Range. dying victorian orphan, sexy monk, malewife dilf, you name it he slays it. tell me who else could do all that so effortlessly and flawlessly exactly NO one. also he's truly a breath of fresh air in a world of dark and brooding love interests ily jemmie
grace - i debated giving this spot to jessamine because they serve similar shades of morally gray cunt but i think grace deserves his spot more because she has these moments where she says/does something small and distincly weird that makes everyone go "uh, ok..?" while she thinks it's the most normal thing in the world which i love. jessamine would scream if she saw a moth but grace would adopt it and make everyone refer to it as her baby and dress it up in little clothes or something and thats why she's bestie
26. you can choose to own any one item that exists in the tsc world. it will not function in our world and will only serve as a keepsake. what are you taking? i'm taking cortana because Big Sword

it really is funny thinking about tlh 😭😭😭 cause none of them really have a sense of what going on, and all their directions are taken from gods who won't be clear to them, and the jason pulls a "oh i did something cool wonder if that's a power" plus his whole "😳 this feels familiar 🤪 but maybe not" and then piper sleeps or gets injured way too much, and leo is having his whole deep and dark backstory thing that literally no one knows about until piper is like "oh u do fire??? that's so COOL!!! 🥰" and leo is all "that's what u think...😢"v😭😭😭 and there really IS so much falling considering jason and festus can fly 😭😭😭 and I'm surprised piper didn't feel a little alienated considering jason and leo have some weird ass bro moment every other scene for reasons unknown 😭😭😭 AND THEN WHEN THEY GET HEDGE ITS SO MUCH WORSE BECAUSE THEY GO "OKAY NOW WHAT" AND THEN HEDGE IS ALL "idk but let's hit it with a bat 😝" and everytime the man speaks jason is always 😐🙄 NRJEIIDHDJDJDJ tlh is so funny to me, idk how we manage to pull out such serious quotes because it's total nonsense, love it
I KNOW!!!!!!
tlh is absolutely just three 15 year olds with no idea what the fuck is going on at any moment. they have no direction other than "get hera back or else" and no one is helping them. both leo and piper just got told about gods and the one guy who does know about them has amnesia. they are basically swinging, falling and fumbling their way to fight a giant and save a goddess.
there's something so. organic and wild about tlh. it's new and refreshing and introduces all these ideas about gods and demigods and how the world we were introduced to in pjo isn't what it seems. that there is more and we get to discover that with the lost trio.
because. they really are the lost trio. all lost in one way or another. trying to make sense of some grand destiny that was suddenly shoved on them and their own lives before they all met. they're complex characters and at the same time they're dumb teenagers with no grasp on the mythological world aside from Piper's knowledge of the myths and Jason's random bursts of non-amnesia.
in pjo, we have annabeth and grover and chiron to walk us through the myths and the world, but now no one knows anything and they're just trying their best to save everyone.
and it's so good.
the questions and viewpoints tlh takes up is so fucking cool.
and...omg...leo and jason having a heart to heart every five minutes while piper is like. hello.

seeing everyone talk about hoo rewrite hc’s i would like to join and add a few hehe
- i won’t reiterate what everyone’s been saying bc they’re all correct and right (no frazel, no racist/sexist shit about piper, hazel, reyna) no forced outing of nico, no weird “i’m alpha” shit between jason & percy, and overall better leo’s whole arc etc...
- i would swap annabeth’s godly parent (so pjo rewrite) i think having her being a daughter of nike (a minor goddess) would be far more interesting/is fitting for her! her desire to be first, number 1, always win, and having her pride and need for victory be a part of who she is! and in pjo she would have been in the hermes cabin thus making her relationship w luke stronger, therefore making his betrayal hurt that much worse (also for fun in hoo she’d have a crush on piper and play into the whole cocky yet nervous daughter of nike who only wants to be the number 1 in piper’s heart hehe)
- instead i would want to put a black child of athena i think that them within the story would be so interesting and their intelligence is not only of extreme use, but they can offer strategies and ways to get out of dire situations in the skip of a heartbeat! plus i think they’d be great friends w leo & hazel!
- i would like to add more minor/underworld/primordial god kids! i wanna see children of eros (primordial), thanatos, hecate, nemesis, nike, hebe, hypnos, erebus, nyx etc... i think they’d be SO much cooler than to see just kids of the 12 olympians and to see how some of them interact w the 7 + nico & reyna! (son of eros & thanatos & hecate interacting w nico and hazel - son of eros helping nico, son of hecate helps hazel to control the mist, son of thanatos being friends w nico & hazel and feeling a connection w them? daughter of nemesis battling w her internal of struggle whether she hates percy or not and how she’s seen how it’s affected her brother? son of hebe being best friends with leo and relates to his fun spunk? son & daughter of erebus being the antithesis of jason yet seeing his kindess and respect and how he subverts their ideals of a how a son of jupiter/zeus would act? children of nike meeting frank & reyna and look at how strong & good at combat they are and seeing future sparring partners?
- i am. a narcissus apologist he deserves a better and well rounded character arc - i want to see him full of anger sadness and despair and how demigods feel the guilt of fighting him and forcing him to look into his reflection and see him sob bc it’s too much and he didn’t deserve to be held down for eternity! here’s @hazelmagix’s take on it: here’s one, and another, and it makes me sad
- eros is the protector of homosexual love! it would have been better to see him protect and speak to nico and give him advice - he protects young men! it would have been different to see this side of him rather than the mischievous terrifying one the gods know (as the god are actually frightened by eros) and also! no thanatos in chains!
- if you’ve read tsoa then this is for you but for the curse of achilles scene i wanted tsoa!achilles so bad omfg seeing a young man who is the cautionary tale of bearing the curse and who’s THE most famous and one of the most tragic demigods (and how he’s the opp. spectrum of percy bc he let go of his humanity and therefore losing everything he knew and loved) and having percy recognize that would have been heartwrenching and how achilles not only lost his life & honor but something more important to him aka PATROCLUS!
- for fun i wanna see a “sons of apollo” group that has a fun rivalry w the “hunters of artemis” that has so substance for bettering hoo it’s just something i wanna see JDJDJDJD and also........ let the hunters have lesbians! people have pointed out how it’s ridiculous to kick them out and also that they’re all so young so artemis has to make sure that they wanna join which would change the concept fundamentally! i think hunter thalia meeting praetor amazon reyna would have been insanely cool and them being gf’s!
- i love valgrace! i’d love to have seen it! peak friends to lovers trope but first and foremost leo learns how to find self love and be secure in himself and his friends help him! so does the son of eros & son of hebe & hazel & piper! and i wanted to see certain friendships within the two camps like percy & leo, jason & annabeth, piper & will, hazel & charlie, piper & silena, the stoll brothers and dakota, frank & clarisse etc...
- not me realizing that i didn’t add iconic takes from @bunkernine & @hazelslevesquee! caitlyn the foremost icon of the TLH trio her takes are over here! and pearl already has ideas about hazel :’)
- i wanted octavian to be an absolute BASTARD, complete antagonist, just despicable! one of my fav scenes of his was when he told percy that he hoped the roman brand hurt which is entirely fucked up and dark and i love a villainous character! he was a little bitch in hoo when he deserved to be a bad bitch! a legacy of apollo who has the worst qualities of apollo himself and who the “sons of apollo” consider an absolute travesty to the name of their patron!
- the gaea fight bro......... what was that??? we needed TENSION, I WANTED ACTION, SHE’S A PRIMORDIAL GODDESS AND IS SUPER POWERFUL! we should have that battle be even more dangerous and tension filled than the battle of kronos and were ROBBED! we should have seen aphrodite’s war side, the extent of damage the big three kids could do, minor god kids weren’t considered to be all that strong but are LETHAL in battle! i wanted sm more from this battle it was WEAK in the books smh we deserved better! and there’s probably way more i’d change but my brain is no thots head empty rn but that’s all i have for now hehe

your favourite prompt for Fairondale please?
“If you want to leave, we can leave.” / “I don’t want to ruin your party.” / “You could never ruin anything.”
Matthew Fairchild and Lucie Herondale modern au
I’m sorry this took so long but I had other things to do and it’s kinda short, but nice, I guess. I really hope you enjoy it.
Word count: 1,728
Lucie couldn't bear it anymore.
She took another sip from the red plastic cup she was holding in her hand, faking a grimace so that if her friends were watching her, they would think she was drinking alcohol and not what was actually sparkling water. She wasn't in the right mood to drink and she certainly didn't want to have overprotective guys asking her why she had that long face.
That's why she had been pretending to be having fun for the last two hours at a party organized by Matthew in honor of the reunion of the group.
By the time everyone had gone off to college it had become difficult for them to get together every weekend as they were used to in high school and, although both James and Matthew were still around, most of the time they had too much to do or were busy with work, so she often found herself alone with Cordelia. Not that she minded spending time with her best friend, but she missed the close-knit group they used to have.
Christopher had moved to the other side of the world with Grace right after graduation and they rarely saw him around five times a year during major holidays like Christmas and various birthdays, which is why neither of them was there that night. Thomas had returned to Spain right after high school for a while and had came back when the distance was starting to create big problems in his relationship with Alastair, who had stayed in London with his siblings. The two of them had stayed in England for a year before moving permanently to Paris with Kia.
Anna and Ariadne, on the other hand, were travelling the world. They had visited almost all of South America and Lucie knew that they would soon begin to travel in Asia, starting in India. They sent her a postcard from each city they visited, with a detailed description of the people there, so that she could introduce characters from different countries in each of her books.
James and Cordelia, fortunately for her, had never left London, but had moved out of the city in search of a quieter, more isolated place, and Matthew, who had just come out of a long period of rehabilitation, had decided to follow them. It was not difficult to visit them, but the trip from the city to the countryside was long and Lucie could not afford to do so every weekend.
She heard her brother and her best friend in the next room while they were playing beer pong with Thomas and someone she couldn't recognize. Cordelia had just made the winning shot and James was lifting her up in the air holding her by her hips, while Thomas and his partner dropped the last remaining glass of beer with an amused grimace on their lips.
From the way he was swinging and from the grip on the other's shoulder, Lucie realized that he was completely wasted. She smiled sincerely when she caught Thomas' eyes and he sent a little grin her way. With all he had done in the last few years, a little fun was what he deserved.
Alastair was talking to other people a few feet away from the ping pong table and occasionally glanced in the direction of his boyfriend.
Lucie sighed. She wondered who he had left Kia with that night. Probably her Aunt Sophie. She loved the boy as if he had been Thomas' son, which, in a way, was true. Both James and Thomas had helped the Carstairs so much after Sona's death and had all actively participated in raising the child, but after they had moved to France, Kia had begun to see Thomas as a full-time parent and very often poeple had mistaken the child for the adopted son of the two boys.
Taking one last look at her friends, Lucie sighed again and moved to another room, quieter and with fewer people. She looked around, watching the couples who preferred to talk rather than dance and get shit-faced.
She headed for the stairs, knowing exactly where to go. She would lock herself in Matthew's room for a moment and just sleep for a few minutes. She didn't want to ask Thomas and Alastair, with whom she'd come to the party, to go back home so soon.
She went up the last step and closed her eyes and stood still at the top of the stairs, thinking how tiring the day after would be. She had to finish reviewing the book and send it to her publisher. She had managed to make it to the deadline without losing all her hair and without biting her nails to the bone and this she considered a great achievement.
She leaned against the wall yawning and dragged herself to the last door on the left down the hall. She entered without knocking and breathed a sigh of relief when she found it empty and dark, except for the light coming from under the door of the adjacent bathroom. She could hear the water from the sink running, but there was no sound or noise to suggest that there was more than one person behind the door.
She sat on the edge of the bed and dropped back onto the mattress at the same time as the bathroom door opened. Lucie turned her head to the person in question and smiled tiredly when she met Matthew's surprised look.
The boy turned off the bathroom light, closing the door behind him and leaning against it. He raised an eyebrow, confused as he found her on his bed. "Lu, are you drunk?"
He broke away from the door, taking a few steps to reach her and sat down next to her, placing his hand on her knee. The contact made Lucie shudder. Although she was wearing heavy black jeans, she still felt the warmth of his skin.
She closed her eyes, shaking her head and waving the glass, "Nope." She answered popping the P, "This is just water. I'm not in the mood to celebrate tonight."
Matthew looked at her with a hint of worry in his eyes. Normally she would be with the others playing silly games that included all kinds of alcohol, and when he hadn't seen her with Cordelia before, he didn't worry much, thinking she was with someone else.
"When did you come in?" he asked, lying next to her.
Lucie yawned again, "Like less than a minute ago."
Matthew turned his head to her and in a hesitant tone asked, "What's wrong?"
She remained silent so long that Matthew doubted that she was still awake, but then a lonely tear fell on her temple and his heart tightened in his chest. "Lucie..."
"It's all right, Math. It's just stress." she answered immediately as she passed the back of her hand over her eyes. She pulled herself up, finishing up the water in the glass.
Matthew followed her and sat down and put his hand on the small of her back, "You wanna talk about it?"
Lucie shook her head, her eyes still shiny, but more alert than before.
"If you want to leave, we can leave." he whispered to her, massaging her back with his thumb.
She took a deep breath, passing her hand over her face. "I don't want to ruin your party."
Matthew chuckled, "You could never ruin anything."
The look she gave him made him choke on his laugh. His eyes darted to her lips for a second, and if Lucie had noticed, she didn't show it. They had been in this situation for years. Years spent wondering if every partner the other had was just a distraction or if it was because they were trying to move on.
"All right, take me for a ride," she said, standing up and cleaning her jeans from something that wasn't there. "But please don't put tsum tsum music because I might get sick and throw up in your precious car."
Matthew put his hand on his heart, "I solemnly swear that I will not put anything on the radio that is not to your liking in this special adventure we are about to embark on."
Lucie laughed and felt better already. It was easy to laugh with him, to feel lighter and freer and not crushed by all the deadlines and orders of her bosses.
Matthew looked at her with a dazzling smile and offered his hand, pulling her towards his bedroom window. She frowned, "What are you doing?"
"I'm not going to hear your brother insulting us in every language in the world because we're running away on the one night we're all together." he smiled over his shoulder.
Lucie, having understood what he was going to do, shook her head, "Uh uh, I'm not going to get down the gutter." She took her hand out of his grasp and squeezed her fist, hoping not to let that feeling go away. Matthew's eyes found Lucie's lips again and her mouth dried up. She swallowed and and the movement did not go unnoticed to the boy.
His eyes immediately found hers, "Do you trust me?"
"Of course."
"Then you'll come down this stupid gutter."
Lucie snorted, "All right, but you go first."
Matthew started to climb out of the window and as she kept her gaze fixed on him, she grinned, backing away. "Where are you going?" the blond asked, falsely alarmed.
Lucie did not answer, leaving the room, and walked quietly down the stairs to the front door. She opened it wide with nonchalace, and came out into the stinging air of the English countryside, finding a sullen Matthew in front of her. She reached out to him, disheveled him and then tied their arms together.
Matthew leaned over her, kissing her cheek. Lucie blushed, clutching herself in her sweater, and then turned to him.
Matthew's green eyes glowed with the emotion of what was waiting for them that night and Lucie felt something pull her towards the boy, a tug inside of her chest.
They looked at each other and burst out laughing, heading towards his car.
Whatever would happen in the next few hours, when they returned home the next morning, it would not be the same Lucie and Matthew as before.

hey quick q: do you think the rachelxAnnabeth drama was a tad sexist on ricks part? i do think annabeth is the jealous type (pride) + all of the rachel stuff happens after annabeth thinks theyre going on a date& she wanted a quest since she was 7 and this mortal solves it. BUT annabeth has extreme confidence yet gets jealous bc TYSON called rachel pretty?? plus none of the quest stuff is brought up?? and they only become friends after annabeth is dating percy?? & both girls speak up before him?
i don’t think annabeth has extreme confidence, maybe in her wits and knowledge but she’s extremely afraid that people she loves will leave her. it’s the conflict that sets off all other conflicts - her mother left her with a father who didn’t care much about her and when she ran away (from her point of view) he didn’t even care. the only family she really ever had fell apart pretty much instantly with thalia dying and luke going bananas (and then trying to poison the other third of their family which yknow can kinda fuck up the mind of a 13 yr old). and then there’s percy, her best friend who she thinks may want to stay but who she’s always fighting with not to mention his constant impending death
like the only thing she’s really confident of is that everyone, sooner or later, will leave. which is why she is so attached (in her own snarky way) to her friends - tyson included. if anything, i think her being jealous of tyson as well just goes to show it’s not sexist because it’s not her male love interest causing it - it’s another type of insecurity. she is protective of her life and of her world because they are meant to be hers, and when somebody she deems threatening (even if she isn’t!) tries to enter it and the people who are meant to be her people are welcoming her, she is jealous. i think it’s completely understandable for someone whose fatal flaw is pride, thinking she can judge somebody’s worth for her world so quickly.
here is this mortal girl who is beautiful, rich and has true sight, who is leading much more powerful people than her and yet can do something they can’t, something annabeth can’t, no matter how much she tried. the labyrinth doesn’t make any sense yet rachel can navigate it. can you imagine how mad things not making sense makes annabeth? everything is thrown off balance - her intelligence can’t solve this one, and to do so she must let someone she doesn’t like in, not only into her world and life but also into her mission. she has to literally let somebody else lead. she has to, at least for a while, let her world go into anomy. it’s a really difficult thing for a proud person to do, so she does what most of us do in similar situations- she lashes out.
so in short she feels threatened, even if she has no reason to think so (it’s not like her friends can’t find other girls attractive or intelligent and it’s not like percy can’t have other friends or romantic interests - it’s just that it feels more personal to her when she’s already insecure about it). of course she’s jealous, and that is most likely intensified by her feelings for percy which are confusing but are most definitely there at that point. however i don’t think she would’ve reacted any different had it been grover or tyson suggesting they needed a mortal on the quest. chiron is with her when percy suggests it and chiron says it makes sense and even then she throws a fit.
she comes to respect rachel when she understands rachel has always had a place in her world, she just didn’t understand it before. she’s not competing with annabeth, she’s there to be something else entirely. and i don’t mean competing in a ‘percy’s love interest’ way - i mean she’s not trying to be a fighter or a quest leader, she is not trying to infiltrate annabeth’s world because it’s rachel’s too. she was meant to be the oracle from the beginning and annabeth knows the fates work in sometimes unclear ways. she understands and respects that, which is why she has newfound respect for rachel. if it was just a matter of ‘hah, got the guy and you didn’t’ she would have no reason to respect rachel after she became the oracle, the dislike would still be there because technically the attraction could still be too. yet it isn’t, yet it’s implied in tlh that they’re friends, good friends to the point where annabeth just drops by rachel’s place at chb with certainty that if she was there she’d be welcoming and they’d have a nice chat. you don’t just befriend the girl you were mortally jealous of because of a guy out of the blue - unless the reason was not the guy (at least not primarily), it was your own issues that you later resolved.
i have lots of critics towards some of rick’s writing, but i think he knows annabeth (especially pjo annabeth). i think he knew what he was doing when he made her jealous of rachel (and made rachel chill with it). i think the way annabeth reacted to the whole rachel thing was completely realistic, albeit unfair, and i think them being friends after annabeth n percy start dating is just coincidental with the fact that’s also the timing that rachel finds her true place in the greek world and shows annabeth she’s not the judge of it and that a mortal can (and does) have much to teach her still about it. and because it’s more about annabeth’s own personality than it is about percy, i don’t think it’s sexist.
however
the reaction the fandom had to the whole ordeal? especially back in the day? that’s an entire other story. definitely sexist
sorry for the long rant i love them sm (rachel icon and annabeth url yall)

I was tagged by @lxcieherondale (thank you!)
1) Are you excited for the TID TV show? Why or why not?
I’ll put it this way: if they stay at least mostly true to the books, I’m super excited! But if it turns into a Shadowhunters 2.0....I can’t think about it for too long or I’ll cry
2) What’s your favourite quote from tsc?
“Life is a book, and there are a thousand pages I have not yet read” (I love Will sm omg)
3) Which character is most like you and why? (Physical appearance or personality)
I would say I look the most like Tessa (my eyes are blue though), and my personality is a lot like hers too! I’m endlessly curious, I love to read, and I don’t put up with anyone’s crap.
4) Any theories on what will happen in Queen of Air and Darkness?
I have a terrible feeling that all of the world’s parabatai bonds will be broken when Emma and Jules try to break their curse, and also that Ty will accidentally do something terrible to Clary and/or Jace while trying to bring Livvy back.
5) Any theories for The Wicked Powers?
Not really (I think I’ll have a lot more once QOOAD comes out). I have a lot more ideas about TLH as of right now.
6) If you were going to get a shadowhunter chronicles tattoo, what would you get?
I would either get a quote or a rune! (Fearless or Persevere)
7) Shadowhunters TV show fan or not?
Absolutely not. I watched about 3/4 of season 1 and I could make an entire post about the things that disappointed/confused/frustrated me.
8) How long have you been a fan of CC’s books and have you been in the tumblr fandom as long as you’ve been a fan?
I have been a fan since about 2012, but I’ve only been in the tumblr fandom since the beginning of this year (I followed the tumblr fandom on my personal blog a long time ago, though)
9) Favourite ship, brotp and notp
Ship: Wessa, Malec, Sizzy, or Sophideon!
Brotp: Jace/Simon or Simon/Jordan (Jordan is completely underappreciated, but that’s for a different post)

Wales or England
20) What 'dumb’ accomplishment are you proud of?

Could you do "does this help" for thomastair please? Your writtings amazing, if not thats totally cool!
You can go home now
Thomas Lightwood and Alastair Carstairs war au
“Does this help?”
This is actually the second part of something I wrote back in July, here is the first part, it is not necessary to read the first part and I’m sorry if this is sad as fuck, with a not so nice ending, but I hope you enojy it:)
Word count: 1,537
When Thomas woke up, he didn't immediately realize where he was. He heard the screams of his comrades, of the soldiers surrounding him. They were not just cries of pain, they were cries of despair. Screams of people who knew they had nothing left. That they had lost every shred of humanity they had when they were born.
They had captured him. It had to be that way.
He tried to open his eyes, unsuccessfully, and panic almost entirely assailed him when he heard someone put his hand on his arm. He opened his mouth to scream, but found he could not make a sound. His throat closed again, blocking his breath, but the person next to him put something on his face, more precisely on his mouth, and the excruciating pain that ran through his veins almost made him faint. He took a breath of air and the oxygen from what must have been a mask entered his lungs.
His face, he suddenly remembered, had been completely burned.
"Thomas?
The boy stopped thinking. His breathing was still irregular but facilitated by the use of the oxygen mask.
"Thomas, please tell me it's you."
If even Alastair couldn't recognize him, he must have been in more than critical condition.
He tried to move his head, to open his eyes again, but the pain was too much and a sob broke out of Thomas' throat. He felt that Alastair grabbed his right hand, the one that had not been hit by the acid bomb and squeezed it. Thomas closed his fingers around his fiancé's and sighed. He felt the other one's hand shake and he just wanted to look at him once. Just once before he passed out from the pain. He felt it in his bones. He wouldn't stay awake for much longer.
"You are alive." Alastair whispered, "You are alive."
Thomas squeezed his hand harder and sobbed.
"I know, my love. I know." Now the other one seemed to be crying too. Someone else approached where Thomas was lying and settled down next to Alastair.
"Here with me is Cordelia." He cleared his voice before continuing to speak, " She was the one who found you. She found all of you."
Thomas inspired abruptly. She had seen Matthew, Christopher... James.
"Yes Tom, I've seen them," replied the girl, having sensed the path of his thoughts. The hoarse and tired voice of those like him who were fighting in the front line. "I couldn't bring them back. I arrived when they started with the fourth bombardment. I saw you fall from the edge of the woods, I saw you crawling before you were hit," she said in a trembling voice.
Alastair resumed after a few seconds of silence, Cordelia probably unable to continue her talk, "She was with Charles and Anna when they found you, but the other two were too badly injured and it was impossible to bring them all back." Another pause, much heavier than the others. Thomas wanted to scream. "We lost Lucie too."
He didn't give himself permission to assimilate those words, to think about what it would mean to go back to Will and Tessa and have to tell them that none of their children would come home. With every strength left in his body, he brought his right hand to his head, touching his eye that he knew was healthy, intact and unharmed. Alastair's hand followed his, helping him support the weight of his arm. He touched his eyelid, trying to open his eye forcibly and when one of the two Carstairs siblings realized what he was trying to do, his hand was lowered.
"Wait. I'm going to find something to wipe your face, don't try to open your eye, okay?"
Thomas wanted to nod, but he couldn't. He heard Cordelia walk away and ask someone for a wet rag.
Alastair handed him a hand on his cheek and then darkness struck him.
When he woke up the second time, the pain had not diminished and the screams of his companions seemed more numerous. This time he realized that he was in a field hospital.
He had never been there. He had never seen one, but Lucie - their dear little Lucie - had been one of the doctors who worked there.
He tried to move his toes and when he could only move his left foot, panic took over again. When he managed to open his right eye he almost vomited in front of the ones in front of him. He closed it immediately, blinded by the light and all that red.
How could they be alive? How could they still breathe, all those people who had pieces of foreign objects stuck in their chest, in their limbs. How could they have survived such wounds?
Thomas tried not to think that they would probably be temporary wounds. That the real wounds would be mental. Scars so deep that they would never heal completely.
He reopened his eye and saw Alastair sleeping next to him. He let his arm fall out of bed and lightly hit his boyfriend's shoulder. He noticed with no little happiness that Alastair still had his ring on his left hand.
The boy woke up up and jumped up, looking left and right in search of the threat. Thomas sighed what little the wounds allowed him. This would be their life from now on if he survived. Hospital beds and traumatic awakenings.
When Alastair realized that he was relatively safe, he sat down again, taking a fleeting look at Thomas, before putting his hands over his face and resting his head on his mattress.
He looked up at Thomas and, in a dragging voice, asked, "How are you feeling?
If Thomas could have laughed he would have done so. How was he feeling? He had no mobility in his right leg and the left side of his body was so burned that the pain in some places was not even there. Every nerve end burned and fused with the skin.
"Stupid question, sorry."
Thomas opened his mouth and realized he could only do it partially. Shit.
Alastair grimaced and his eyes filled with tears. "I'm sorry Tom."
Thomas looked at him and felt empty. All those feelings, those famous butterflies in his stomach... they had always been there, and yet now it was as if they were dead and rotting inside him.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw Alastair get up and lean out behind the bed, when he sat down again he had a glass in his hand.
Water.
God.
How long has it been since he had drunk.
He must have moved unintentionally because Alastair laughed, before putting his hand on his right shoulder and squeezing it slightly, "Calm down," he said to him in a peremptory tone, "Now I'm going to lift the top of the bed slowly, so that you can sit down, if you feel pain, squeeze my hand." he continued, proceeding with the framing of his fingers to Thomas'. He gave Alastair two quick squeezes to make him understand that he had understood.
The latter placed the glass back on the bedside table and began to lift the back of the bed.
As soon as he reached a certain position the skin on Thomas's left side began to pull so much that the boy was forced to lift his hips out of the bed, which caused a pain in his right thigh so strong that he saw everything black for ten seconds. When he returned among the living, Alastair looked at him apologetically with tears in his eyes. The bed had returned to a height where the discomfort was bearable.
Cordelia arrived with something in her hand and when she lifted the object Thomas almost laughed. Leave it to her to find a straw on the battlefield. "Does this help?" Alastair thanked her and then sat down again, placing the glass so that it was close to Thomas' mouth.
The first sip was a blessing.
It's been days since he drank such clean water. Maybe weeks.
He was certain that he had survived thanks to the IV he had now attached to his body, but before arriving here, at the hospital, he and his companions had gone on to drink from the puddles they found on the path.
The weeks went by slowly and Thomas did not speak. He became feverish after the first transfer and the day before his return to his motherland his condition became so critical that he could no longer leave. The wounds had become infected and by now the infection had reached his heart. Anna, Charles and Cordelia had said they would stay with Alastair, but he had begged them to go home, to stay with their families. They were all mourning, they needed to be with their parents.
Thomas Lightwood died a few days later, lulled by the arms of what was to become his husband only three weeks later, his last words to Thomas being “You can go home now.”
Finally at peace with himself, he reached his friends and his cousins, happy to be able to rest for eternity.
