So when I was a child, I got Ranger Rick every month. It's a magazine for children designed to teach them about animals and nature. I was a tiny little nerd living in a heavily wooded area back then, so I loved it!

I had this exact issue lmao.

The mascot of this magazine was the eponymous Ranger Rick, a cute raccoon forest ranger who taught kids about nature.

This is what he looked like when I was a kid getting the magazine in the mid-90s.

Look how friendly and soft and dashing he looked!!! Ultimate nature educator for kids!

He got a redesign when I was around ten, which was a little odd, but I was getting a little too old for RR at that point, so I guess I didn't mind that much. That was about when we left Ohio, so I wasn't getting as much time in nature anyway.

Sorry that he's grainy, there are not that many images of early 2000s Rick on the internet. I think they were trying to make him feel more relatable, like he was a child instead of a ranger teaching them. Or at least a more casual teacher...? Not sure how well that worked.

I remember thinking the redesign was kind of pointless as a child, but this was around when my mom lost her job and we didn't have the money for things like magazine subscriptions anymore. I stopped getting the magazine and the design became kind of a moot point, but I still had beloved memories of Ranger Rick.

So imagine my surprise when I see a recent image of Rick and... oh.

Oh no... Look how they've massacred my boy... Look at those soulless eyes... That skinny little body that does not look huggable at all... Like I guess I'm glad that he's gone back to being more obviously a ranger, but like... the Flash of it all...

But. But I guess I should be grateful for what we have. He might be kind of soulless now, but look what they tried to launch a few years ago:

I hail from ao3, and I wanted to say that I meant to watch the bedard/wembanyama video after reading your fic, but I forgot until you reminded me in your reply to a comment I left on your fic.

And boy howdy is their height difference way bigger than I thought. Like I looks up their heights when reading the fic but seeing the video of them next to each other… Wow. Connor looks like a small child in his chair next to Wemby with his legs hanging above the ground.

Second, I love Wemby even though I know nothing about the nba, and I’m going to need to check out his tag later for fics. He is so nice and charismatic.

Oh I am so glad you watched the interview, it truly is a delight. I admit this was not my most well-researched fic, I think I watched that interview + all the H-E-B commercials with the Spurs (ty kitnita for telling us all about these) + read like one article on ESPN about how Wemby is their (ESPN's) beautiful son who has never done anything wrong...was not batting .1000 on a fic with a 2k limit while quitting my job and depressed lol. (And to be clear this is more research than I did for Connor Bedard 🫡). But he does seem like a sweet sweet boy. Basketball RPF writers are fighting a war I can't even begin to imagine but there are a handful of Wemby fics, none of which I have read but they might be good!

Basketball players always blow me away in terms of charisma and personality but I think that's bc I've been in the hrpf trenches for so long where every day I'm like clawing for a sign of life on my teams lmfao. I love it.

#so #maybe a week ago #there was a post about the doll commercial movie on my dash #and it was about how yeah the movies feminism was like 101 babys first feminism #because the audience it was aimed at arent people who have read feminist theory #so of course it was just The Basics #so that critique of it wasnt really valid or whatever #kinda like the ''are you trying to buy ice cream at the hardware store?'' idea #but more ''why are you trying to sell ice cream at the hardware store?'' #and the post annoyed me but im a mature adult who does not have the energy to get into fights on tumblr so i just scrolled past #and i was trying to parse through the annoyance to figure out why it annoyed me so much #and i was thinking ''did it annoy me because i was in this post and i didnt like it?'' #but i kept coming back to the two references to native americans in the film and how both were insensitive #one being the comparison of the kens implementing patriarchy to barbieland to the smallpox blankets and hence the wider genocide of natives #and the other being the barbie version of mount rushmore which you know was settlers desecrating the black hills which legally belonged to #natives and was a sacred mountain (going off memory i think the sioux the cheyenne and the lakota people all had claim) #and it was thinking about thst mixed with watching a leftist youtuber cover a prageru video that i realised why that post annoyed me so much #BECAUSE #the criticism wasnt just that the feminism in it is babys first feminism with the training wheels on #(which i also still kinda have a bone to pick with tbh but thats another post for another day) #a major part of the criticsm of the films feminist themes is that they were white feminist themes #the entire film was from the perspective of a white audience #the film was assumedly white if that makes any sense #like barbie is just Original Barbie because she just is. she was the first one and everyone came after her #at no point is her whiteness even acknowledged let alone explored #the film explores things like beauty standards and workplace misogyny and motherhood and the patriarchy in general but it dares not even #tiptoe around race. it just blatantly ignores it the way second wave feminism did. and oh does that coincide so unfortunately with the kens #strike back plot which lowkey perpetuates the myth that giving equal rights to an oppressed group will lead to them oppressing you #the lens from which the film views the world is one of whiteness and ignorance and privilege. white feminism is not feminism 101 #basic feminism should not exclude women of colour.

Softened ice cream (store-bought or homemade, with me HIGHLY SUGGESTING those no-churn recipes regarding the latter).

Chocolate or chocolate coating (can use colored white coating if you desire to complement a flavor of the copycat Viennetta, such as pink with by a hint of red for a strawberry flavored one) melted with coconut oil. Alternatively, you can use Magic Shell.
