Doctor Who: The Ultimate Speedrun Marathon - Series 3 (2007)

The semester’s keeping me busy but trust me I’m still trying to keep this speedrun going and get caught up on everything before May, so I’m glad to say I finally finished Series 3 yaaaaayyy! It was a lot of fun, especially in how it carried over from Series 2 into 10’s adventures with a new companion after Rose. Aight let’s get into it…

General Thoughts

Right off the bat, I loved Martha as a companion. Similar to Sylvester McCoy, I was familiar with Freema Agyeman from her stellar work on Sense8, so I was already a fan of her’s as soon as she popped up on screen. She’s got her own brand of intelligence and spunk that bounces off of 10 really well. Don’t get me wrong, I love that Rose was carried over from Eccleston’s tenure into Tennant’s, but I believe that Martha meeting 10 as he is for the first time in this series was beneficial to them building a better chemistry. Also, it’s great and refreshing to see the Doctor get his first black female companion in the show’s history. Overall, probably one of my fav companions so far, if not my favorite.

Not much to add in regards to David Tennant’s performance as the 10th Doctor, but I’ll heap praise anyways. He’s just as charismatic as he was last season, never phoning it in for even a second. All of 10’s big emotional and personality quirks can really be chalked up to Tennant’s clear love of the material, which was also apparent in the previous two Doctor actors I’ve covered thus far.

Besides the Doctor and Martha, Series 3 also had a really big moment that I was pleasantly surprised to see be built up so well: the return of The Master. Last time I saw that character in this speedrun watch-through, he was ‘90s Eric Roberts doing his best impression of an effeminate man. I was wondering how he’d inevitably return after his fate in the TV movie, so I genuinely felt the rug pulled out from under me when he was revealed to have been hiding right under my nose as Professor Yana in Utopia. Derek Jacobi played both the unassuming professor and the menacing Master really well, so props to him. As for his almost immediate successor, John Simm as the 7th Master, I must admit…. not really my thing. I will admit he had some great moments that made me truly hate him (which in turn made me like him more cuz well y’know he’s the villain duhh), but the over the top flamboyance just gave me major BBC Sherlock Moriarty vibes. idk, again I still haven’t seen the classic series in its entirety yet, so maybe that’s just how the Master is, but I’m inclined to believe Stephen Moffat is the common denominator in this specific characterization. Despite my criticisms tho, Simm’s chemistry with Tennant was really fun. Much more dynamic than the complete diva Paul McGann had to act off of.

Favorite Moments

• The entirety of Blink was a really clever well done treat for me. It felt a lot like an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it just played with Doctor Who’s version of time travel so well and to such great effect. The Weeping Angels are now some of the Doctor’s most iconic foes, which is well deserved because they are super memorable and scary as fuck. Also it was funny to see baby Carey Mulligan here lol

• The moment Professor Yana reveals himself to be The Master was so crazy cool. Like just a few seconds earlier when he started acting weird and jaded I was thinking “holy shit is he the Master he’s gotta be the Master” and I was right 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎

• I appreciate that Martha mentions how William Shakespeare doesn’t look exactly like he does in the famous portraits we have of him. It’s still kind of a topic of speculation as to what exactly he looked like in his youth, so I liked that she’d pick up on that.

• “Come on. We can all have a good flirt later!” “Is that a promise, Doctor?” “Oh, 57 academics just punched the air.” I love this show

• They should induct Blink into the National Film Registry for preservation just for the introduction of the phrase “wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff” alone

• Captain Jack Harkness (great to see him back btw) is THE FACE OF BOE????????????????? not sure how to feel about that. points for creativity tho

• tryna just chill and watch The Lazarus Experiment then BOOM!!!!! MARK GATIS JUMPSCARE AHHHHHHHHH

• The sound of a militaristic drumbeat constantly playing in the Master’s head is a great motif. One of the things I did like about Simm’s portrayal was how well he got across the maddening effect of the drumbeat’s sound in his head.

• The series finale was soooo crazy. I loved how the consequences of the Master’s plan were shown to have been so hard to crack that it took a whole year for them to even get close to him. It really built up the Master as a new kind of villain for this revamped version of the show. Also, fucking good on Martha for busting her ass to travel the globe and gather the support of millions. She’s such a badass

Alright, that about wraps it up for Series 3! I had a great time with this series, even if it took me a bit to get through. Time to crack on, though. Gotta keep this speedrun train going. Onto Series 4, which (for the most part) marks David Tennant’s final tenure as the 10th Doctor.

(I better get an A+ bc I used literally every tag that came to mind, my friend. Also I churned this out in five hours and did not edit it, so if there are spelling errors pls forgive.)

Good Omens: An Exploration of Internalized Acephobia

The year is 2019 and the six-part adaptation of Terry Prachett and Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter has just been released on Amazon Prime and is kicking up controversy amongst Christian moms. The show is critically acclaimed and is nominated for several awards. Headlines cycle through the news for a while--everything from speculating on a season 2 to the hilarious petition Christians sent to Netflix to take the series down--but after awhile the buzz settles down and everyone moves back to scarier headlines like next year's presidential election or that worrying virus cropping up across the world. YouTube continues to monetize Ineffable Husbands compilations, but that’s the most you see of it on public social media platforms.

Except for on Tumblr.

Six episodes of David Tennant being slutty mcslutty demon slut and Michael Sheen being a refined asshole (affectionate) disguised as an innocent do-gooder is apparently enough to keep Tumblr happy for a good long while. Supernatural isn’t doing so great on that gay content, Game of Thrones just ended as terribly as the non-derranged viewers knew it would, and Doctor Who is doing kind of ok, but the fandom is winding down as it approaches the next regeneration.

Everyone goes batshit insane over Good Omens because this show has everything. Enemy to lovers, PINING, m u t u a l pining, sacrifice, EXISTENTIAL CRISISES, recontextualizing your faith, GOD IS A WOMAN, you name it and the fandom has it. Thousands of incredible fanfics on faith and religion and existence start pouring out. The ex-catholics are Thriving. Even Supernatural fans are hopping on this train. Everyone’s having a grand ol’ time with our queer metaphysical beings.

And then it happens.

As it does with every large fandom.

The acephobia is born.

Neil Gaiman Gets Canceled

Okay, to be really canceled, it has to happen on Twitter. Which is where the inciting incident started, however, the majority of the explosion was contained on Tumblr and--to an extent--Reddit. There was some backlash on Twitter, but the real shit went down here.

So everyone is going crazy over Ineffable Husbands, and of course word gets round to Neil Gaiman who has to address that there are mountains of queer subtext in the show.

“Particularly the way that Michael plays Aziraphale just as a being of pure love, I think that gave us something very special, because people of every and any sexual orientation and any and every gender looked at Crowley and Aziraphale and saw themselves in it, or saw a love story that they responded to, and that was completely unexpected.

“Things like this, you can’t manufacture, they have to happen from a fandom.”

And the fandom lost its mind.

Fandom Response and Internalized Acephobia/Transphobia

The backlash was disappointing, but unsurprising. Here are a few favorites:

“[...] IDK how to tell y'all that the complete desexualization of these characters is homophobia regardless of what you think their gender is.”

“good omens is queerbait. full stop. it is a show deliberately crafted to have just enough doublespeak and easily interpretable looks to both have plausible deniability, and appeal to the story’s largely queer audience. creator confirmation outside of canon, much less on twitter, doesn’t cut it. this show came out in 2019 on amazon prime. people had been making their interpretations of aziraphale and crowley’s relationship known for decades at this point. there was utterly no excuse not to have them clearly be in a relationship, at least by the end. but a queerbait was more profitable, and no press is bad press, so they didn’t. insisting otherwise is both disingenuous, and displaying a profound lack of ability to be critical of the media you enjoy.”

I really just can’t get over how breathtakingly bad “this person dresses like a man, uses male pronouns, and is physically exactly like the average man except they don’t have a dick and so they’re not a man” is. This is not woke nonbinary rep folks

And this is where things get really….weird. The majority of these takes are by blogs that are run by fellow ace/trans folk and yet all of these takes still reek of queerphobia.

Have another one for good measure:

“I feel like good omens takes queerbaiting a step further, what with Gaiman’s honestly excessively aggressive statements that they couldn’t possibly be gay. Like if you wanted nb characters write nb characters, writing a fairly romantic relationship between two men-as-default characters and then attacking people who read it as gay by framing us as the villains who are denying the poor nb and asexual people their representation feels like a specifically malicious type of queerbaiting.”

A truly lovely take on that last one. Apparently it's the transphobes who are the victims for bullying the non-binaries who are taking away their representation.

So to summarize, fellow greyace/greygender blogs are all up in arms because Neil Gaiman “desexualized” Crowley and Aziraphale.

They claim nonbinary characters who still use male pronouns and physically presents as a male is bad rep, the show queerbaited--even though Neil Gaiman went on record as saying it was a love story--and the poor naysayers who want to be victimized via queerbaiting throw the blame on Gaiman for the blatant homophobic takes they're spewing online.

The internalized queerphobia reveals itself once again.

Additionally, just because you are nonbinary or trans doesn't mean you speak for the whole community. Queer people are not homogeneous and there is a wide range of perspective and experiences to be taken into account.

The internalized acephobia that emerged is not surprising. Disappointing. But not surprising.

Why These Are Objectively Shitty Takes

There are plethora of takes on Tumblr that could be chosen for this part. The one's that will be addressed, however, are the previously cited quotes.

Aziraphale and Crowley Didn't Kiss

Or, to put it more eloquently, the desexualization of Good Omen's man characters is homophobia "regardless what you think of their genders."

The implication that two characters have to be sexual with each other on screen to be queer is LAUGHABLE. Why, you may ask? How about I direct everyone's attention to the C-Drama Sensation The Untamed (2019).

The Untamed features a queer story about two tragic lovers receiving a second chance at their relationship. Because the show was created and produced in China, they had to tone down certain aspects of the books to get it past censorship. This means exactly zero onscreen implications of a sexual relationship between their main characters beyond the insanely well crafted subtext.

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are a study in desexualizing queer characters. I could write a thousand meta analysis on this show alone, but that's a different post.

The Untamed, in short, is a love story.

Good Omens, in full, is also a love story.

Both have main characters who are "desexualized" and both shows ends with both ships as explicitly canon as Milo and Kida at the end of Atlantis the Lost Empire (sorry that was the first film that came to mind that did not include a kiss between a m/f ship).

The implication that two characters can only be in a relationship if they are sexual onscreen is fucking insulting at best, homophobia at worst. Actually it is good ace rep to have your two main leads not show sexual interest in each other. Actually it is excellent queer rep to have your characters be romantically in love, but show exactly zero desire toward each other or any other character on screen.

And that last line? The "regardless of what you think of their gender"?? Yeah, that reeks of transphobia too. Because Neil Gaiman confirmed that angels/demons in his work are canonically nonbinary/genderqueer and the implication that two nonbinary persons can't be in a relationship without it being sexual is super bigoted.

Good Omens Is Queerbaiting

Queerbaiting is a marketing technique for fiction and entertainment in which creators hint at, but then do not actually depict, same-sex romance or other LGBTQ+ representation. They do so to attract ("bait") a queer or straight ally audience with the suggestion of relationships or characters that appeal to them, while at the same time attempting to avoid alienating other consumers.

The marketing for Good Omens itself gave the impression that audiences would be getting a story about two enemies who gradually become reluctant friends by the end of the series. A buddy-cop story on an inter-dimensional scale. Instead, Good Omens is about two incredibly old friends too in love with earth and each other to let the apocalypse happen.

Toting Ineffable Husbands as part of their marketing scheme didn't really start until after queer fans started coming out of the woodwork. Is this queerbaiting...eeeeeehhh. Honestly this argument is iffy.

There is also the fact that Sheen and Tennant explicitly played their characters as in love and people working on the show shared that vision. They were telling a love story, albeit a very non-conventional one.

There are several articles out there on queercoding vs queerbaiting, how queer isn't just gay, and author intent that could be cited at this point, but I'm going to go easy on this section and just say this:

“Whatever Crowley and Aziraphale are, it’s a love story.”

Everyone screams "death of the author" until it's inconvenient for them, and this is certainly the case for Good Omens. Suddenly, author intent matters because Neil Gaiman refused to assign a direct label to his characters.

And why should he? They're his creations. And actually they're damn good representation without the label. The fandom collectively forgot nonbinary queers existed or decided that Neil Gaiman was representing the wrong kind of nonbinary queers.

Final Thoughts

Good Omens is not the first fandom to have rampant acephobia strewn throughout nor will it be the last. Homophobia of all types will always rear it's ugly head, especially in larger fandom spaces where there are statistically more shitty people to go around.

Even if the naysayers were right, the creators of Good Omens, actors and original writers intents were...well, good. It's a charming little story about two close beings who make very little impact on the end of the world, but still somehow find their happy ending.

This is a bit of a sweeping statement, but people love to be victimized in fandom. The truly magnificent gatekeeping that happened on Tumblr circa 2019 is likely going to run a repeat when season 2 releases. Hopefully most on here will figure out how to turn their critical thinking skills on and remember that the block button exists, but it's doubtful.

Let some rep go around for the greyace/greygender queers please. It's not a competition for who's the most victimized, but we would like some solid rep every once in a while without the bigots crawling out of the woodwork.

So the David Tennant thing...

I was not a fan

I've been aware of him since I started this blog and probably before because DW fans and the whole superwholock mess

So I was aware that this guy with the brown hair was the doctor and everybody loves dw so they loved him

Now that I don't see him as the doctor/Ten. I see him as Crowley, obviously

But watching Good Omens videos eventually gets you suggestions like "Michael Sheen as that sexy werewolf" or "Ten's regeneration"

And I did the mistake of watching that last one

And I might watch all of DW now because

But I kept on watching stuff of David's interviews &the common thing that I got from them is that apparently, when he played Ten the world went nuts and fell in love and he was kinda like THE hot guy of Europe at the time

And idk where I was going with this I just...

idk feels like age is doing a fine job with him?

It might be my particular type or something because I think he looks better now, the beard suits him very well. The whole "on process" beard is beautiful on him.

1. Thomas Twitter/General Updates

The new episode of sanders sides is apparently coming out tomorrow so GET HYPED! Apparently this one will be containing a content warning so be advised and take care of yourselves y’all! Anyone have any theories as to what the new episode is gonna be???

Also we haven’t talked about this on the blog yet but last week, youtuber Daniel Howell came out!! Yay!! I saw some supportive tweets from youtubers (including Thomas!) all over Twitter and Instagram and as a long time supporter of Dan, it was really heartwarming <3 congratulations dan!

2. Fandom Updates

Everyone is still really jazzed about pride which is awesome!! And I’ve seen some amazing prinxiety art floating around the fandom tags which has made me (#1 prinxiety shipper) very happy. Also incorrect quote memes are popular as ever and they’re always very amusing to see!

It seems like a lot of people (including our fabulous mod wheat) are getting into good omens which is great! I haven’t watched it but i’ve loved david tennant since the tenth doctor days so i’m sure it’s amazing. Some top notch gay shit I’m here for it.

Deceit has been getting a lot of love!! He deserves it, our precious snake lizard man. I love him. That’s it for fandom updates!

Today’s theory is a personal favourite of mine! Pride!Roman! This one is based on @dreamsshadowwashere‘s ficlet about Roman being a secret dark side!!

Since Thomas introduced Deceit to the Sanders Sides sphere, there’s been a debate about the dark sides. Does every side have a ‘dark’ counterpart? Or are they completely separate entities? And of course with this discussion comes angst and many theories!!

The pride roman theory based off of the original fic is essentially Roman is a dark side and has been keeping this from the other 3 and only Deceit is the one who knows.

Now personally, I think this is a refreshing flip from the ‘Virgil being a dark side' theory although that one still holds a special place in my heart! There are of course reasons to dispute this: Such as the end-card scene at the end of the Halloween-Christmas episode in which Deceit pops up in Virgil’s room, as well as Virgil and Deceit’s already quite developed relationship.

But, I think that Roman is an actor first - right? He would want to keep his secret from the others for as long as he possibly could in fear of rejection (what he stated was his biggest fear in MY TRUE IDENTITY).

My Opinion:

Well, idk if y’all know this but i’m a GLUTTON for Roman content - any and all of it - so personally I really love this theory! It gives his character a lot of depth and PAIN which i’m obsessed with. What do you guys think though?

4. Other Things That Happened In The World

You may not know this but I’m from Hong Kong and if y’all have been watching any international news lately, you may have noticed that some very serious political protests have been happening over the past couple of weeks. Young and old Hong Kongers are protesting against the government who are trying to pass the extradition bill, a bill which would allow law enforcement in China to seek out and arrest people in Hong Kong for ‘felonies’ - basically taking away our right to free speech and putting all of us in danger.

Without putting a damper on things, I just want to say: I am proud of my people. I am proud of my generation and generations older and smaller who are taking a stand and fighting for what’s right. There were 2 million people at the protest on Sunday (nearly a third of the population!) making sure our voice was heard. All I can say is: 加油香港！

Fuck I just woke up from an abjectly terrifying dream and I kind of am writing it down just so I can get it out if my head and stop thinking about it.

Fuck

So there’s this kid with like grey eyes and he’s British and from like a really rich family in like, I think this is the 1960s. Except he’s been living at an orphanage.

Because his biologica mother died and for some reason he didn’t have a dad or anything.

So like all the servants in this big-ass house were like “holy fuck we need to send him to an orphanage” and for some reason they were like really serious and solemn and panicked about it. And so the lady who dropped him off at the orphanage was all like “there, now you’ll be safe.” Which is weird. But it makes sense in context. It’s worth mentioning that his eyes are strikingly similar to his dead mom’s. Actually no they’re exactly the same to the point where it’s creepy. They are (drumroll) fucking storm cloud grey and y’all should’ve seen that coming. But then his rich grandpa or uncle or whatever finds out about his existence and sends for him to go live in that same big creepy house he was in as a baby.

He’s like ten now, btw.

So The Doctor, and this is David Tennant’s doctor, and a red headed girl he’s been living with on a blimp (don’t ask) are like “shit this kid is in so much danger we’ve gotta help.” And they’re so panicked for him it’s really ominous.

So they become servants in that bullshit house and they bring the kid home from the orphanage. And he’s all sad and confused cause he’s been living as a tragic orphan this whole time but apparently he’s rich now and he’s also just been separated from everyone he’s ever known and that’s sad. It’s worth noting that he’s a ten-year-old child.

There’s this really ornate carved box on a cabinet in front of a whole bunch of fancy pictures of his mom, a few golden ... things (idk what) ... and a mirror. The Doctor and, apparently her name is Vanessa, are like, “so your mom died here. Don’t you ever ever ever open this box, or else her malevolent restless spirit will come out if it and possess you. You better not look in the box.” And the boy’s like “okay.”

So he goes around, exploring the huge house. And he sees images and hallucinations of his biological mom - who he’s never seen before - doing things. (It’s worth noting that this lady is only his mother in a purely biological sense and never emotionally acts motherly towards him so she’s not REALLY his mom.) She’s just like, walking around or reading or eating or playing the piano or whatever. But every single time she turns around to gaze at him directly in the eyes with the most terrifying expression and then kind of fades away. Also the light and shadows on her face and body are so weird and unnatural. So he eventually just like, gets pulled into a trance and starts following her, and she leads him through a bunch of twisty corridors to the place with that box. And like, the Doctor and Vanessa are guarding it but he’s unnaturally quiet and they don’t notice him at the angle he’s coming from.

So, he looks at the first painting on the wall, of his “mother” when she was young. And then there’s a bit of a long mirror and he slowly walks down it, looking at himself. He looks pretty terrified btw. Then suddenly the mirror is replaced by a painting of his “mother.” And it’s all dark and his mother’s ghost kind of blends with the painting and it’s kind of 3D and it’s just so terrifying and staring at him dead in the face. And he’s in a trance and is suddenly impulsed to open the box. But the second he opens the box the trance is over and he screams and runs away. But it’s too late. The malevolent spirit - which is soooo abjectly terrifying - is out now. And finally the Doctor and Vanessa realize all this. And the three of them are running all over the city trying to outrun the malevolent spirit. But she keeps chasing them and she’s never far behind. Sometimes she’s just a ghost and chases them and sometimes she posses random people to chase them.

And finally they get to the blimp and start flying away in it. Except she’s there too. And she gets in the blimp one time, really sneakily. And she finally fucking succeeds at possessing him.

And she’s like “now I’ll have you forever. I’ll completely take over your body and I will use it to live again and I’m never letting you go. You have the same storm cloud eyes as me so it will be very easy for me to get into your soul and claim it.” And he’s fucked up by that. Remember, the kid is ten. Vanessa does some kind of thing to unpossess him. But they all know if won’t be long until she’s back, since she found her way in already. The Doctor and Vanessa try to comfort him by saying that he’ll be alright and they’ll make it through this. But everyone knows that it’s naïve optimism or perhaps just a lie.

Without telling the adults he gets this electric orb thing - it’s one of the Doctor’s science things, don’t question it - and holds onto it.

So she comes back. And she fucking lunges at him. And just before she gets into his body he grips the orb so tight that the outside breaks and he gets electrocuted. So now he’s all limp noodle and dead and the Doctor and Vanessa are all sad. And Vanessa was like “we all knew he was going to die. I guess it was pretty useless to try to stop it all.”

So then they give his body back to the orphanage. And the kids at the orphanage are all sad and they have a funeral for him.

And meanwhile at the house the kid’s uncle or grandfather or whatever is all mad at the Doctor and Vanessa and I think he tries to murder them but they do some magic science thing and he’s scared. The malevolent spirit is still in the house so the Doctor and Vanessa burn the house down.

And that weakens the ghost but she escapes into the world looking for a body to posses so she can live again. It’s worth noting that the servants who sent him to the orphanage as a baby did it so he’d be away from the reach of that dead lady and can grow up and live as a normal kid. They knew this all would happen.

Okay so I made it through Doctor Who season 11 and... realized why I took a break halfway through to rewatch Peter Capaldi. I’m just gonna spew out some of my thoughts (under a cut because I got a little rambly at 2:30am last night)

Overall I’ve found Chibnall disappointing so far, which is a bummer because I really enjoyed Broadchurch and I had high hopes when he was first announced as the new showrunner. The shows are very tonally different, though, so maybe that’s part of it? I feel like the pacing often seems slow and I feel like he’s trying maybe a bit too hard to make it different from previous seasons.

Like for example, there was not a single appearance by an old monster/enemy, which I had mixed feelings about- I don’t like when it feels like they’re over-relying on bringing back the usual suspects but, like, not a single Dalek or Cyberman or w/e, not even in the finale? (Which, since it was only one part and didn’t really feel much larger-scale than the episode before, I didn’t actually realize was the season finale til it was over). I’m curious to see what he does with returning villains in season 12, though I was disappointed when I read something about the soundtrack that mentioned they’re not re-using old musical themes for the Cybermen or anything.

It also felt like there were fewer references than usual to, like, any point in the Doctor’s past. Again, I find it a bit annoying if it feels like they’re just trying to keep up a constant stream of clever references, but I do appreciate a clever reference once in a while. For example in “It Takes You Away” it’s like okay so you’re in this Norwegian cottage trying to find the blind girl’s father and after going through a spooky liminal cave space you end up trapped in a mirror/copy version of the world and you’re like ‘hm, who could create such a place?’ Like idk Doctor, what about the spooky monks from last season who created multiple copies of the world, and you could visit different locations by traversing a weird liminal space and going through an open portal-door, during a period of time when you yourself were also blind? Like we’re not going to even vaguely acknowledge the parallels here? Okay

I do appreciate Jodie Whittaker though and I feel like she’s doing the best she can with what she’s got. Her version of the Doctor has a fun bouncy energy that reminds me of David Tennant and Matt Smith, her experimenting with slang is adorable, and her outfit is fantastic. She has a very cool sonic screwdriver as well. I do feel like the way she’s written feels less... idk how to describe it but like less confident or less in charge, more of a team player than a leader. Which is fine! It’s a change from most Doctors’ overconfidence (or just straight-up arrogance depending on the Doctor), but seems like kind of a weird change to make specifically for the first female Doctor

I like the idea of the companions, it’d be nice if there weren’t so many of them so they actually had time to develop deeper personalities. I do generally prefer platonic Doctor-companion relationships so it’s nice to see more of that

Overall it just feels...a little bland? Like they’re playing it safe. I think it’s hilarious (and worrying) that apparently people have been accusing the show of trying to push a “leftist agenda” or whatever when actually the show tries to touch on social issues but often does it in like the most milquetoast way possible- ‘hm I suppose Space Amazon might have some flaws, but it’s not actually the system’s fault. At least the workers are getting some paid vacation now!’ Like even Moffat’s writing had more teeth then that.

Another example: the Rosa Parks episode was good in theory but, watching it as a white person, I felt like it was trying to tiptoe around the more painful parts of racism to protect my White Feelings. It felt, again, like a sort of overly careful attempt to confront racism by focusing on a pretty well-known and non-controversial topic (the Montgomery bus boycott) and I didn’t feel like it really had much to say to make me challenge my own preconceptions or internalized racism. It’s really good that they made a specifically anti-racist episode (co-written by the show’s first POC writer- which, seriously, did it really take this long for that to happen?? yikes), but I still came away feeling like the writing was trying to congratulate me for being a progressive modern person who can acknowledge that blatant displays of racism are, in fact, bad. I also sort of felt like the usual sci-fi/historical adventure feel got pushed to the side in favor of making an Issue Episode about the American Civil Rights Movement, but in a way that felt like something I would’ve watched in 8th grade US History, which is probably why some people are whining that the show is trying to beat them over the head with a political agenda. I personally think it would’ve been more interesting if they’d chosen to focus instead on, say, the Black Panthers or the civil rights movement in Britain.

Anyway I’ve heard that season 12 gets a bit better, so I’m gonna try not to be too cynical going in. I’m curious to see what they do with the new version of the Master and I guess I’ll wait and see if the companions ever get more character development haha. I know some people are all up in arms about the Timeless Child thing (which I know...vaguely what it’s about) but I feel like Doctor Who has always played pretty fast and loose with its own canon so I’m waiting to see if they handle it in a way that makes sense or if it ends up feeling weird and contrived

1. Why did you choose your URL?

I was (and still am) a big fan of the musical The Phantom of the Opera plus I play the viola so I just merged the two and haven’t really wanted to change it since.

2. Any side blogs?

Nah. Y’all are going to see my obsessions in one place.

3. How long have you been on Tumblr?

I’ve been on here since 2010, so that’s 11 years total. Wow.

4. Do you have a queue tag?

Yes. I have several actually. I use the basic one, then a “Mari is stuck grading” tag and a “Back to work” tag. I do like to schedule things in advance rather than posting all at once.

5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?

It was mainly for the purpose of blogging Doctor Who and Sherlock content. Plus, David Tennant and Benedict Cumberbatch content as well.

6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp?

I love Maxwell Lord so much and the wonderful @sirtadcooper made such gorgeous icons of him. The only tough decision was to choose which background color and style I wanted.

7. Why did you choose your header?

In case y’all haven’t noticed, I’m in love with Pedro Pascal and once again @sirtadcooper blew me away with her header design and I had to get one. Plus, I love the added touch of Pedro’s signature on the side.

8. What’s your post with the most notes?

This ridiculous Pedro Pascal characters + text posts entry. I still cannot believe how many notes it has. 😲

9. How many mutuals do you have?

I have no idea, but there are several and I love every one of them.

10. How many follows do you have?

Apparently I have 220 followers but I’d say it’s a bit less than that due to dead blogs or possible spammers.

Nope

13. How often do you use tumblr each day?

I’m on here for a few hours each day, either in the afternoon or late evening. I’m trying to limit the amount of time I’m on here though recently. I’ve been teaching online for a year now so less screen time is necessary.

14. Did you have a fight with another blog once?

Nope. I avoid any online fights or confrontations if I can.

15. How do you feel about “you need to reblog this” posts?

I was posting some of those earlier in the year since I was feeling bad for my writing mutuals and/or others that made gifsets or edits, but I’ve cut back on reblogging those posts recently. I realize they are important for exposure and that Tumblr and Instagram / Twitter are not the same, but I personally think that as long as you get some kind of attention (be it through reblogs, likes, or comments) that’s good. However: stealing and reposting is not cool.

16. Do you like tag games?

Yes I do! They are always fun!

17. Which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?

I’d definitely say @sirtadcooper, @trashcora, @steveroger, @pedrocentric, and @mandalores just to name a few are true artists and deserve all the praise for their work. (Also IDK why the heck y’all are following little ol’ me. Unreal.)

18. Do you have a crush on a mutual?

Oh, absolutely. Inside I’m still a nerdy lone teenager at the cafeteria looking around for a place to sit but too afraid to approach you beautiful mutuals sitting at the cool kids table out of fear of rejection or being made fun of. *adjusts glasses and slinks away*
