The absolute hatred I feel whenever people make fun of and joke about Jesper for mistaking Kuwei for Wylan. Like his ass just told his father the truth about his gambling addiction, he just went through an actual, truthful conversation that went fucking terribly. Jesper was looking for a distraction, he wasn't in a good and proper state of mind when he kissed Kuwei and you expect him to be able to notice the small details that set Kuwei and Wylan apart?! You expect him to tell the difference between two people who are tailored so perfectly that to the average person they might as well be identical?! When he's feeling so awful?! I will never understand how people can blame him for that while knowing the context. I am so fucking angry on Jesper's behalf.

Also, take in count Patrick probably had to do chemistry tests with Jessie but not Sujaya AND he will spend way more time with the first one. So there is a high chance he may ship Nikolina over Zoyalai and thats okay! there is no need to hate him for that.

As much as i want Show!Tolya to be canon aroace and for Leigh to confirm it as canon after all those hints: If Lewis ships Tolya with someone, or if the show gives him a LI (we don't know if Vanessa Grace is actually playing a character, the imdb is incomplete since it doesn't have Adrik nor Jordie) don't hate him for it, since is not completely confirmed on the books and the blame would be on netflix for wasting representation material.

Have you seen people giving Amita, Freddy,Kit or Dani a bad time, for bad things that were done with their characters and focussing the critism on the script and/or casting directors? Also: Freddy,Amita and Kit all support Malina, have you seen people attaking them? (other than a couple of joke responses to Kit)? Well, you can do the same! Not harrasing people doesn't hurt. I have the feeling this is because everyone knows the SoC part of the fandom won't let them live if they touch any of the crow actors (reason i am not too worried about Jack). The only i have seen is that person who put down Amita´s acting in order to highlight Ben´s , which fortunetaly was just one person and even Ben Barnes fans called them on that one. If you can show decency to them, you can do it with the other actors.

And Kuwei hasn't been casted yet but i´ll get ahead: don’t bash on his actor ,even if they cast someone who ships Kuwei and Jesper, he´ll deserve respect.

I know there are more new characters but, i am mostly sure no one will have a problem with Anna &Joanna and/or Kit & Jack liking their character´s ships , nor that Zoyalai shippers would come after Alistair for Adrik´s canon crush on Zoya.

1-3 random headcanons i have about them:

nina absolutely lives and breathes for gossip. blame it on her collecting gossip as part of being a spy. blame it on her growing up in the clique-y little palace. blame it on whatever you please, but know that nina zenik knows every rumor about you and has no qualms starting some herself if need be. but also know that she hears everything about her friends... and she will not hesitate to track the rumor all the way back to it's source...

idk and idc if this directly contradicts canon, but nina doesn't like tea. there, i said it. she just.... doesn't understand the hype. it's just sad water, and literally everyone has Opinions on how to make it correctly. the kaelish put an ungodly amount of milk in their tea yet it always tastes stronger than everywhere else, the ravkans have strict rules about when to use jam or honey or sugar to sweeten it and saints forbid you get it wrong, the shu make tea making a very lengthy process but also manage to put nothing of interest in it to make it taste substanial, and the kerch are always complaining that their tea is too cold while the zemeni don't like it hot. why does tea need to be so complicated???? who decided to make a beverage wherein everyone is upset at the quality, and everyone is displeased??? you would think it would be some kind of relief to her that the fjerdans don't really bother with tea much, but it's 10x worse, actually, because they're constantly saying how their traditional beverages are better, when nina actually thinks it's worse.

an au or fanfiction trope i think the character would do well in:

a fake dating scenario would actually be so fun with her. you could either spin it so that it's your average "oh, no, i'm visiting my (grisha) family for the holidays and they're so annoying about my still being single after a really bad breakup, so will you just do me a favor and pretend? i'll make you coffee and buy you gifts??" of course, on the way to ravka, nina picks up the rest of the crows, and half of the battle is convincing jesper and wylan to not say a single word about this fake dating situation - nina is dangerous and will gladly take revenge. the other half of the battle, of course, is when nina starts to fall for you (which both kaz and inej can sense - no doubt they even placed a bet on whether or not nina will confess by the end of the trip), and she can sense you're falling for her too. but (*dramatic rom com voice*) is she ready to fall in love again???? or, lol, you could add some spice to the trope and make the fake dating also an undercover au wherein nina needs to infiltrate a group of really influential people for ravkan buisiness, and you just so happen to be a lowkey ravkan supporter. of course, you and nina no doubt have political differences or some kind of moral clash, creating friction between the two of you - maybe she thinks your quiet support isn't enough and brands you a coward, while you think her self-importance is annoying. the issue, then, is when the only way for nina get her to reasonably rub elbows with these people without garnering suspicion is to pretend to be your fiancee. you get to bicker like a married couple, and gossip about people while infiltrating their inner circle, and you end up learning so much about each other that oh no.... your feelings have moved past respect now, haven't they? and wouldn't you like it if nina just... stayed?

honestly, give nina something classy and relaxing! take her to a nice dinner and then go to the opera! be a little fancy! she will make scathing remarks about the rich, but will enjoy getting to dress in style and pretend to be anything other than struggling for just a little while. afterward, you can walk down to the Geldcanal and look out at the water. have a meaningful chat, wallow for a bit in your mutual self-pity, and then tell raucous jokes that aren't even really that funny, but somehow your laughing anyway.

most of the kuwei hate in this fandom is absolutely racially motivated and most of it is probably subconscious but i NEED to talk about this.

and not because i think people r thinking "i hate kuwei!! he's asian and i hate asians!!" tbh most anti asian racism on the internet goes way deeper than that.

basically, what i believe to be the most prominent type of racism against asians, especially on the internet, is stereotyping. specifically "uwu-ification." the east asian entertainment industry likes to paint asian people as cute, submissive and sweet because it markets disturbingly well to american audiences, and whether people mean to or not, they internalize it and it affects the way they think of asian people as a whole. This mostly happens to east and southeast asian women, but definitely a lot with men too, especially in more recent years with the whole yaoi culture thing (i fucking hated typing that) becoming more popular. simply put, it's fetishization.

so how does this relate to kuwei? well, when kuwei is introduced to us, and im not gonna dance around it— he is pretty stereotypically asian. he's shy, innocent, small, good at math/science and— you guessed it— no speaka engrish. leigh bardugo lays the perfect trap for fandom white girl weeaboos to gush over this guy. once i came across a modern au where kuwei's whole northern chinese-mongolian ass is a "shy japanese transfer student." i really wish i was making this up.

but then we find out that kuwei is actually a conniving little shit who is really quite terrible at science and spends all day making shitty drawings of his crush instead of doing math or wtv. The turning point where we are told this is the jesper kiss. This is the point where we find out kuwei is not the yaoi uwu baby we thought he was. and how does fuckin 2/3 of the fandom react?? hate. instant hate. If you search "i hate kuwei" on twitter there are tweets both defending and attacking him, but there is significantly more of the latter.

most of them claim to hate him for kissing jesper but like... jesper kissed him. He doesn't say anything because, in his own words, "we're all probably going to die anyway." does no one see how tragic that is?? he let his first (probably) kiss be taken by someone who he knew didn't even like him because he thought it would be the only one he'd ever get.

and yet the only thing people see is that he "got in the way" of wesper and he's evil. throughout the series kuwei is given no agency, and that's the point of his character. everyone on the planet treats him as a weapon or a bargaining chip. he gets tossed around like a rag doll and to white (or otherwise not asian) audiences, that makes him the perfect picture of a little asian cutie i almost vomited typing that holy shit. but the moments where he takes something for himself— insisting on going to ravka, kissing jesper back— that's what makes people hate him. and don't even get me started on the way people project their hatred onto the other crows, especially wylan. yall will act like wylan loathes kuwei with all his being. he doesn't!! wylan is not a hateful person and he always defends kuwei!! but nooo, kuwei sucks and he deserves it for daring to be a person instead of an idea.

and hey?? guess what?? kuwei was NEVER in the way of wesper. there was no love triangle. narratively speaking, there was never any threat that kuwei would end up with jesper instead of wylan. never ever. the kiss was literally only put there to create drama for wylan and jesper. we never even hear how kuwei feels about it. stop using that as an excuse to hate on kuwei when we can all see it's because you're subconsciously mad at an asian person not being nice.

also disliking kuwei does not automatically make you racist, im just saying a lot of hatred towards kuwei is rooted in racism.

anyone want to hear my six of crows x jane austen's emma au. yes of course you do don't be silly. the only person allowed to be silly is me as I descend into madness in the course of trying to cast this. (if you think 'I've heard this before' yes I've posted abt it before tho I think it was on my main)

kaz is emma, a bored, overintelligent rich bitch stuck in a country house with a bunch of shit idiot neighbours and almost no one to entertain or match him. fucking useless dad per haskell / mr woodhouse is a weaksauce hypochrondriac, and jordie / isabella has gone and got married and ditched kaz, the bastard. the only consolation is their neighbour inej / mr knightley, who is rich, sensible, popular, and elegible as hell... glory be, an intellectual equal for kaz!

in order to be less bored, kaz takes on a protege, mysterious randomer and natural son wylan / harriet smith, who kaz decides to mould in his own image and make a good match for. wylan is in love with gentleman farmer jesper / robert martin, but kaz is a snob and tries to push him towards local vicar kuwei / mr elton (I KNOW. I'M SORRY KUWEI), but that all goes tits up bc turns out kaz is a fucking terrible matchmaker, who'd've known.

meanwhile, unassuming and a little cold, but locally well-liked matthias / jane fairfax has arrived back in the village, and kaz busily commences hating on him because he's another accomplished young man and he makes him feel inadequate. hot on his heels comes the mysterious nina / frank churchill (NINA I'M SO SORRY I FUCKING HATE FRANK BUT THIS IS WHAT WORKS FOR THE COUPLES YOU CAN BE A NICE FRANK CHURCHILL ): ), who kaz is kind of fascinated by and enjoys sparring with, and hence kind of misses the really obvious signs that nina and matthias are secretly engaged, even though inej, ever thief of secrets, has lowkey noticed something's up, like matthias getting mysterious gifts from someone. kaz ends up being convinced that possibly it's inej that's pursuing matthias, which nina encourages because it helps her cover, and kaz kinda panics.

everyone has petty village drama which culiminates when kaz sneers at pekka rollins / miss bates (LISTEN. LI actually you don't need to listen bc I laughed out loud when I thought of this comparison but hear me out, if you just think of it as the equivalent of the church of barter scene except instead of 'I buried him' it's 'when have you ever stopped at three?' it kind of works. sorry to miss bates tho who is still kinda my fave austen character) at box hill, which culminates in inej going BOY WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM and kaz is like wow she kind of has a point should I be a better person :/

uhh what else even happens. there's a ball after nina massively encourages one, inej saves wylan from being partnerless and later dances with kaz (think of the gloveless dance scene from the 2020 adaptation? yeah? yeahh??). the regency gender conventions here are getting so messed up lmao, never mind. in emma harriet fancies herself in love with mr knightley and emma is forced to realise that she likes him, so let's say that wylan pretends to be after inej, in order to strong arm kaz into realising that he's wanted to marry inej this entire time. wylan's dad turns out to be minted (I'm stretching the book here to make it work w SOC but never mind) but that's after kaz has admitted he fucked up and sent wylan off to marry gentleman farmer jesper, yaaay. nina's relatives who are stopping her from marrying matthias die and hence there's a massive revelation with 'oh they were engaged this whole time lol', kaz is PISSED bc he didn't clock it. uh. everyone gets married and now kaz can escape the shit village and actually go places. the end.

Things we can still get in a possible SoC Spin-off

now that i'm done ranting about the things that annoyed me, lets talk about this.

1: Some light on Inej's backstory, the abuse and exploitation she suffered, her own struggles with touch, her vulnerable side, her fun side especially when she's around Jesper and Nina, her fears and how she rises above them. According to this article by tvguide, showrunner Eric Heisserer states that a script has already been written about her incorporation back into the Dregs. Let's just hope they stop reducing Inej's personality to a mere “knife wife” and “girlboss” , and address her actual depth.

2: Tante Heleen's return! Since we never actually see her body onscreen and her death is merely mentioned twice and shrugged off, I'm hoping she's alive and that the production team is keeping her for the spin-off. She's an integral part of Inej's character arc.

3: The Dregs. I wanna see Rotty, Specht, Anika, Pim, Per Haskell, Big Bolliger and the rest of the bunch. Also Dime Lions, Razorgulls, The Liddies, and other prominent gangs. And a shot of the entire Merchant Council would be nice.

4: Since Inej will return and Matthias is still in Hellgate, we'll get the entire Hellgate breakout and Ice Court Heist. (I'm assuming during Matthias's breakout, Pekka Rollins will also manage to escape from Hellgate 🤔) So we can still have the entire book 1 ending at Vellgeluk where Wylan's face has been tailored and Inej gets captured by Van Eck.

5: Crooked Kingdom plotline till they rescue Inej— Kaz throwing off a rapist from the lighthouse after gaining intel, Kaz threatening a little girl, Jesper and Wylan going to receive Colm Fahey and the whole “people pointing guns at each other is basically a handshake” 😂, Nina's struggles with Parem and Matthias trying his best to be there for her, the iconic Kanej reunion at Goedmedbridge,..

I'm not sure how they'll proceed after retrieving Inej, because alot has already been adapted in this season of SaB. But we'll still have the showdown against Van Eck. Not sure what they'll replace the plague thing with but we'll see..

6: Wylan's backstory! Aside from Inej, we also have Wylan's heart wrenching backstory and we'll witness it all. His early life, the moment he lost his mother and his world became gray, his escape from the men who try to kill him, his realization that they were sent by his own father, his struggles with it all, his conflict with being a good person and working with criminals, his reunion with his very alive mother and Jesper being there for him, and so much more..

7: Kuwei! I'm a big fan of this sassy boy. He absolutely hates having to be with Crows and he chooses not to use their language simply so he can avoid conversations with them 😭 We'll see him cause conflict in Wesper's relationship but also slowly accepting and being thankful of the Crows. And I really hope, the show adds a sort of camaraderie between him and Wylan too. But despite it all, I still wanna see Wylan threaten to drown him 😆

8: The Bathroom Scene ♡ If we take into consideration the wound cleaning moment in season 2 of SaB, its a lot different from the bathroom scene. For starters, they're on Black Veil and not an actual bathroom, and Kaz didn't actually tie any bandages for her. Most importantly, the neck kiss didn't happen. So bathroom scene can still happen and it can serve as a beautiful callback and a parallel to this scene in season 2.

9: Kaz can still find Inej's parents, meet them and well, gift her a ship. Wylan and Jesper can still have their happily ever after, living at the Van Eck Mansion.

10: Since they've made so many changes to the source, can they fucking not kill off Matthias and let him and Nina have their happily ever after too? Like they can act as delegates for Ravka and Fjerda 🤔 Or they can help Hanne claim the Fjerdan throne 🤔 Anything aside from killing him off please.

shadow and bone s2 spoilers ahead!! specifically up to episode 5

this is something that i started thinking about while i was writing my last post about the crows in s2, but i just can’t get over how amazingly jack wolfe not only portrayed but further characterized wylan.

wylan’s characterization in the show is so subtle and that’s so perfect for where he is in the story right now, and what i find most interesting about it is that it factors in that he isn’t a teenager like he was in the books, which is something that i was wondering how they’d pull off because that does make a big difference for wylan’s story.

wylan being an adult in the show means he spent his formative teenage years enduring jve’s abuse, whereas in the books that is when he breaks away. which means that if wylan in the books is deeply insecure, wylan in the show has been pushed to the edge of that insecurity, and IT SHOWS.

in the show, it’s so very clearly not just about his disability anymore. jack characterizes wylan as constantly looking away, covering his face, mumbling and saying what he thinks under his breath, and visibly trying to shrink into himself. just watching him you can tell that this is someone who, putting it plainly, hates everything about himself, and that extension of his shame makes so much sense as a result of the extra years with his father. in many of the scenes he’s in (one that comes to mind is most of the booth scene in episode 2) you get the sense that he’s trying very hard to not take up space, literally and figuratively.

another great example of this is the scene where they’re trying on the komedie brute masks and he says that his is perfect because it covers his whole face. its a subtle throwaway line, but i found it really sad and also really telling— and also really great, subtle foreshadowing of in the books when nina tailors him to look like kuwei and he doesn’t see a reason to care that it might be permanent.

then of course we have jesper coming in with the “i like your face” (eeeee) line, which very well may be the first time adult wylan’s ever been told anything like that. there’s also that little moment when they’re in bed together where jesper comments on liking how he looks in the morning and wylan immediately covers his face and then jesper stops him and kisses him. not only is it extremely fucking cute but also another demonstration of why they’re good for each other.

and the best thing about the emphasis on his insecurity in the show is that it doesn’t eliminate the fact that he can be very confident and forward when his guard is down, which is how he is in the books. one of my favorite scenes in the show is when he tells jesper not to patronize him. and i can’t wait to see the glimpses of his confidence grow more and more frequent as we (hopefully) get the six of crows and crooked kingdom plots, just like they do in the books. all of that being said, i expect an emmy to be reserved for jack for when we get the “he told them everything” scene.

Kuwei is a very complicated character for me because on one hand, I hate him, but also, I'll defend him till I die. Him kissing someone without informed consent is reason enough to absolutely despise him. And trust me, I do. But also, Kaz literally murdered people and I personally have not seen anyone talk about how terrible that makes him. All of the crows are awful people. They all have trauma and they've all done things they shouldn't have. They've all killed and stolen and lied. They're criminals. I'm not excusing what kuwei did by any means, it was a ridiculous thing to do and I hate how the fandom handled it. But saying you despise Kuwei for it but then not holding any other crows accountable for their crimes just doesn't make sense to me. You can love a character and still acknowledge their flaws. I adore all 7 crows, but they're not perfect and that's what makes them so realistic.
