Camera+Pro, NativeCam

I closed out 2023 last week by driving up to Portland to see an old friend and meet his new partner. Little Josh and I traveled well together and he was a hit in their home.

One afternoon, Nate and I took a walk in their neighborhood to visit some galleries and a couple of wonderful used bookstores. When we stopped to take a break, we ducked into a well-worn neighborhood bar to have a beer before walking home. We hadn’t been there 10 minutes when the couple in this picture came in. We were the only four people in the bar.

I was so curious about how it was that this elderly couple set up to play pool together.

When Nate went to the restroom, I got up and went over to the woman to say I was curious because they didn’t look like any kind of pool sharks.

Her kind smile lit up her face and warmed my heart. She told me her husband used to be a pool shark - before he got dementia - and that she had brought him in to see if his muscle memory might be triggered by playing a game.

It was all I could do not to burst out crying at the beauty of their friendship.

When I retreated back to the table with Nate, I told him what she had said and, together, we watched quietly while the man flailed the cue around in the air for a while. In a bit, the woman showed him he could use the cue on the table to get a ball into one of the pockets. He started using the stick to scoop the colored balls directly into the pockets.

After about five more minutes, he became enamored with the black ball and started rolling it around the table and then used his cue to shoot the black ball into other colored balls for a while. Colored balls were flying into the pockets along with the black ball. It took maybe another 10 minutes before he noticed the white ball.

Over the next 15 minutes, the man remembered what the white ball was for and shot every one of the colored balls into the pockets. When nothing but the white ball was left on the table, he had the biggest smile on his face. It was getting dark inside the bar but I thought he might just light up the whole city.

My New Year’s Resolution for 2024 is to do whatever shows up in front of me each day that allows me to use my enthusiasm (my human experience of God within me) to spread the kind of loving kindness I saw the man’s wife use to nourish her husband’s enthusiasm.

Happy New Year, my friends. Next week, I start teaching the third round of a five-week iPhoneography class I developed while I was living in the RV last year. My students are beginning iPhoneographers, seniors who are teaching and learning together at the OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute at Southern Oregon University.

Can’t wait.
