"I Wish To Ask You A Question," said the golem.
"Yes?"
"I Smashed The Treadmill But The Golems Repaired It. Why? And I Let The Animals Go But They Just Milled Around Stupidly. Some Of Them Even Went Back To The Slaughter Pens. Why?"
"Welcome to the world, Constable Dorfl."
"Is It Frightening To Be Free?"
"You said it."
"You Say To People 'Throw Off Your Chains' And They Make New Chains For Themselves?"
"Seems to be a major human activity, yes."
Dorfl rumbled as he thought about this. "Yes," he said eventually. "I Can See Why. Freedom Is Like Having The Top Of Your Head Opened Up."
"I'll have to take your word for that, Constable."

Anyway let's talk about Callum, Finnegrin, and the concept of "dirty work" / "getting your hands dirty"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
According to definitions, lmao, dirty work or" to do someone's dirty means to do a task for them that is dishonest or unpleasant and which they do not want to do themselves". This is, in many ways, one of the first things we learn about Finnegrin, and how he consistently dodges getting his hands dirty:
We learn from Villads he has a reputation of simply drowning people (or feeding them to sea leviathans) rather than outright murdering them first hand
Elmer is the one who directly tortures Callum and mandhandles the prisoners, whereas (with the exception of the blood freezing spell), Finnegrin does not
Rayla even critiques this trait in Chasing Shadows.
Deadwood pulled back his red-spattered fist and looked to the balcony. Finnegrin leaned over the railing, still half-shadowed, but Rayla saw him give the slightest nod of his head. Deadwood lowered his fist. Rayla prickled in anger. “Coward. Why won’t he fight his own battles?” “Because he doesn’t have to,” Redfeather said.
Finnegrin continues this train of thought with Callum. He's not going to pick who loses a hand; he's going to make Callum do it. He's not going to do dark magic directly, he's going to force Callum into doing it. Whether Finnegrin intended to force Callum to perform the revenge spell beyond just giving the ingredients is unknown, but it'd definitely be in character.
Callum, meanwhile, always does his own dirty work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is, in some ways, also where Harrow faltered, because he didn't do his own dirty work. Viren is the one who escalates Avizandum's murder in both bringing up the idea of and going to kill Zym, and procures the ingredients for the revenge spell (something it seems unlikely Harrow would've outright asked him to do, if he knew). Sarai, in spite of her moral objections/reservations, is the one who actually kills the Magma Titan. Harrow let Viren do his dirty work until it steadily destroyed both of them. (But post for another day, maybe.)
Aaravos also works through / uses other people for his own ends, heaping blame and harm and dark magic on their shoulders till they collapse or meet their ends to well, meet his intended ends. Callum and Claudia are just his most recent victims/collaborators.
Likewise, Finnegrin not doing his own dirty work is also his undoing, because the person who was actually doing his dirty work turns against him and defeats him.
I don't know if I necessarily have a point to all this, but 1) thought the contrast was interesting, 2) the juxtaposition between dirty vs cleanliness as a concept and how Callum technically straddles that line while still being very much a good person, and 3) the usual "Elmer foreshadows Callum breaking away from and ultimately defeating Aaravos" schtick. Also irony - gotta love the irony

I know that my blog is primarily DC, but did y’all know that I’m a really huge fan of the hunger games series?
Yeah when the prequel came out a few weeks ago my whole TikTok for you page was hunger games, then Palestine, then a grwm to go to this fancy restaurant, then a hunger games edit that sexualizes a character who’s whole point was that he’d been forcibly sexualized since he was a kid, then a story about Israel bombing a Palestinian hospital.
Yeah actually I’m such a big fan of hunger games that I had watched an interview where Suzanne Collins said that the series was based off of Chanel surfing and going from coverage of the Iraq war, to a reality TV series. I could t help but wonder if Suzanne was sitting down in her sofa, watching what’s happening in Gaza, and thinking about how it was even worse than the books she wrote.
Yeah I’m actually such a big hunger games fan that when Bissan stood at the doors of Al-Shifa, screaming that they’d bombed the gate, I remembered Katniss, standing in the rubble of the bombed hospital in district 8 and how we all called the capitol animals and evil and vile for doing that. But do you call the US that? Do you call Israel that?
Yeah I’m actually such a big fan that when i saw the Israeli girl post a “day in my life we’re at war edition” I couldn’t stop thinking about the capitol’s residents and how incredibly out of touch they had been.
Yeah I’m actually such a big fan that when I watched countless Palestinian kids saying they’d grow up to be just like Motaz or Bissan or Plestia, I couldn’t help but think of the kids that said they’d volunteer just like Katniss. Because to be just like one of the journalists Palestine would still have to be under siege and still be the concentration camp it is today so that they could show the world “look what you’ve let continue for decades” “look what you’ve done to the heart and soul of the world”
If you stand with fictional resistance stand with real life resistance, stand with justice and truth always, and never get tired of fighting, because don’t you think they’ve gotten tired too?

Bellumbeck is such an interesting final boss, because not only is it your ally, some of the bosses actions/details make it clear that Linebeck is fighting back. Retraining Ciela instead of killing her, using moves he's seen Link do, and more darkly in the manga - willing to destroy himself if it protects Link. Link is forced to fight not just an ancient evil - but one of the closest friends he's ever made besides Tetra, and one of the few adult figures he respects. To fight Linebeck is to potientially lose another mentor as was with The King of Red Lions
Bellumbeck is so… he really stands out from pretty much all of the other final bosses and its so cool- and it’s like you say, Bellumbeck is not just some final form of varying flavors of Evil Thing or a dangerous character whose defeat the world would benefit from, that’s your fucking friend. It doesn't feel heroic like other final bosses, it feels like a desperate fight for the survival of you and your friends.
Linebeck being capable of fighting back or otherwise resisting Bellum is an interesting one; definitely a fun way to give him some sort of agency or role to play, suggesting that he may be fighting against Bellum just as hard as Link is. I think I've seen some people suggest that the slight hesitation or pause before some of Bellumbeck's attacks may be caused by Linebeck trying to stop himself (like the manga shows him doing).
I absolutely ADORE the idea that Bellumbeck uses a spin attack because it's something that Linebeck has seen Link do. The idea that it might be unconscious, or something Bellum just happened to pick up on from Linebeck's memories... UGH it's good no matter how you justify it.
On the other hand, I personally don't see how Linebeck fighting back would've had an effect on Bellum restraining rather than killing Ciela. I understand stuff like a hitch in the attacks or unconsciously influencing what attacks are made, since all of that is stuff that Linebeck has a direct (though unwilling) hand in, but Bellum grabbing Ciela is something that... Bellum individually does. I don't imagine that Linebeck would be able to have any ability to influence what Bellum himself does, especially considering that even if he can affect the part he's directly involved in it's only ever a small effect. Bellum restraining rather than killing Ciela is, I think, a deliberate choice on Bellum's part without any input from Linebeck, and honestly even that way it's still interesting to think about.
The manga's take on events is interesting, especially with the idea that, to some degree, Linebeck was able to overpower Bellum in order to move how he wanted (even though it was clearly limited to only specific parts and with clear difficulty) and the idea that he'd do... well, anything he can to ensure Link's safety is pretty good.
The general concept of a Link having to fight a possessed person isn't really new and wasn't new when Phantom Hourglass rolled around, but I honestly think ph did it best, holy shit. Link having to fight a close friend and someone in a role akin to a mentor to him is already one hell of a devastating setup, but one extra thing I've seen others point out is that the Bellumbeck fight is the second time Link's be faced with a sword fight with another human, and he ended the first one by killing his opponent. So, that's a fun correlation for Link to make during this fight!
Bellumbeck is just... it's such a cool, unique battle even compared to the other final bosses, and while it may fall short in difficulty or gameplay, it has some fantastic music and all of the story and character surrounding it is honestly amazing.

coming to grips with the possibility that i might not go to grad school at all and i’ll genuinely learn organic/regenerative agriculture and agroforestry from the farmers in my community is so scary but also feels like something i’m inevitably sliding towards and something that will guide me towards a life that i’ll love forever

And what’s funnier is that the prophecies DO come true. It’s just that characters made the wrong assumptions about them. A man wielding a spear leads the armies at Ragnarök and a bearded, bald man dies in Atreus’ arms. Brilliant.
“Fate only binds you if you let it”- no, but, actually. The characters kept saying it but only in hindsight do I realize how deep it goes. Truly the best way forward, even with some hint of the future, is to proceed as you would regardless. Make your own story and ignore if it matches the prophecies or it doesn’t. Or else you end consumed by thoughts of it (cough, Odin). And in the end it’ll come somewhat true without the details that YOU projected onto it.

What do you think Bombalurina would be like as a mother? What was her own mother like?
Sorry anon, I had a crazy few days, but I didn't forget this!
Bombalurina's relationship with motherhood is....complicated.
First and foremost, whenever I think of Bombalurina and motherhood, I think of this picture:
Tumblr media
But particularly the overall mood I can craft (in my mind) from the way the kitten is being held - a little uncertain, a little awkward, slightly wary, but with something achingly gentle about it. It fits because overall, I think Bombalurina's feelings towards motherhood were and are mixed.
Bombalurina remembers very little of her mother other than she left her behind all those years ago (to do what she never really figured out), and she's got a lot of unresolved trauma in regards to that. So much, in fact, that it prevented her - for the longest time - from thinking she could even be a good mom. It's one of those feelings where she has crafted a very specific idea of what motherhood is meant to be (based on what she needed and what she would conjure up as a kitten), and she doesn't quite fit that mold. Realistically, she didn't really want to be a mother either - in her mind, motherhood sort of meant the end of all things. A passing on of who you were before, even if you aren't ready to leave it behind yet (and what if - a small voice reminds her - that's how your mother felt? What if you turn out just like her and leave them behind?)
It's an uneasy thought, certainly. Better stick to fancy free - that's more in her element. That's what she wants to be - not tied down to anyone or anything. Larger than life, plenty to go around and then some, voluptuous and generous in her words, in her mind, in her actions. She can be the fiercely protective mother hen to her fellows, to Demeter. She can take care of them. She's good at that.
I like to think that Electra is Bombalurina's - but born in a circumstance which was, in all honesty, a bad situation all around and at a time she wasn't really ready *to* be a mother. She never even really *considered* motherhood until it became a very palpable, very alive and slightly frightening reality. And since she was on her own, she had to figure out the baby thing very quickly. But in true Bombalurina fashion, she took it right on the chin. She's always had all of these things thrust on her all her life, and her reputation is usually to go with the flow of it and take it head on, exuding confidence out of every bone in her body. Even if she has no idea what she's doing, she'll make it up as she goes. She'll put the mask on and wear it until the sun rises. And it was no different with her foray into motherhood. Headstrong and stubborn, she is, and it came about so fast she didn't really even have a chance to stop and think about it.
In technicality, she's a really good mom - she knows all the tricks and figured out the best way to feed her and knows which sounds she likes best when it's time to wind down and remembers all her likes and dislikes, and managed to keep Electra safe and - most importantly - a *secret* the entire time they were under that roof together. And she loves Electra - she didn't know you could love such a little thing so much - but she scares her. Inside, Bombalurina's adrift, holding that weight on her shoulders. Even when she stops to consider it when the whirlwind finally quiets down, tries to digest it, she doesn't know how to feel. She feels suffocated, limited, as though now this was entirely who she was meant to be, but she wasn't *ready* to be that yet and sacrifice everything.
But then looking at that little face, feeling the pride she does in her breast or the relief when a fever was broken, she thinks - yes, I want to be her mother. I want to give her everything I didn't have and get her away from this place and make sure she never worries about anything ever again.
But - and isn't it painfully ironic - Bombalurina doesn't think she'll be *enough* for her. Electra doesn't need her - she needs those foggy images of motherly presence Bombalurina holds like cobwebs in her fists. That's what she needed, why wouldn't Electra? And she continues in these hopeless circles for a good long while.
Meanwhile, Bombalurina is Electra's sun and moon. She's everything to that little gal; her whole world for a good chunk of her early life. She's safe and warm; she holds her when there are thunder storms and brings her treats whenever she can. She knows all the words to Electra's favourite song (it's a rock n' roll song she slows down) and curls the ends of her whiskers and tells her what the stars look like. She's a *good* mama, because she is Electra's mama. That's the long and short of it.
(Bomba learns - as the time passes - that there is no real one way to be a good mom. That a "good mom" doesn't look like any one thing. But it takes a lot of coaching through that when they get back to the Junkyard, a decision she is free to make, and with the help of the other queens, she finally starts allowing herself to believe that.)

Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-MT) introduced the Safeguarding Americans from Extremism Act on Thursday, seeking to prevent “Palestinian terrorists” from entering the country by halting the Department of Homeland Security from issuing visas or granting asylum to individuals seeking to enter the country with a Palestinian Authority passport. The bill would also expel any immigrants who were granted visas or entered the country on or after Oct. 1. The bill has 10 co-sponsors, including Reps. Andy Harris (R-MD), Aaron Bean (R-FL), Ralph Norman (R-SC), Scott DesJarlais (R-TN), Clay Higgins (R-LA), Ronny Jackson (R-TX), Bill Posey (R-FL), Barry Moore (R-AL), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and Andy Biggs (R-AZ).

Hi! I saw your post about Obsidian (for note taking) and I was wondering how you added custom fonts? Or if there's some resources you could point me to that would help figuring out some tips and how to use it
hello!
so, the simplest method for custom fonts is to first make sure it’s installed on your computer (if you download a new font, right-click and hit ‘install’).
Then if you just want to change the base font in obsidian for either all of the interface, or for editing/reading mode, you can go into settings, then under ‘Font’, you select the ‘manage’ option, and there’ll be a text box/dropdown you can type in to find the font you want. Click ‘add’ and then that’s done!
Tumblr media
If you want to do custom fonts for headings, or for specific pages/cssclasses (like I’ve done for Obedience and claws in my notes), then you will have to do a little bit of css, but it’s not as scary as it sounds i promise!
To make a cssclass, all you really need is a text editor. You can use notepad if you’re just doing a few little things, but if you want to start doing a lot I recommend getting one that’s more designed for it. I use brackets because it’s free and easy, but a lot of people use VSCode which is. too intimidating for me. and too much for my usecase anyway.
im getting offtopic. FONTS!
now, i am. out of date with all the new variables and also i write bad css, but the way I do it if I want specific header fonts is like this:
.markdown-preview-view h1 { font-family: COOL FONT; }
OR apparently, as I just learned in checking to write this, you can use ‘.markdown-rendered h1’ as the class. either seems to work…my css is very old.
now there is a way to do this for all headings at once without copy-pasting it for h1, h2, h3 etc but i don’t know how to do it right and at this point my css works and so i Leave It Alone
this only does it for Reading Mode, because i like having more ‘text-y’ fonts for writing and then pretty ones for reading when I’m done. to change things for live preview/source view, you need to do
.markdown-source-view.mod-cm6 .cm-header { font-family: COOL FONT; }
And if you want different fonts for different headers, change the ‘.cm-header’ part to ‘.cm-header-1’ (or whatever number of heading size you want.)
You can add things other than fonts in there as well, like font-size, text-transform, and other css classes. (this is why i like brackets, it suggests classes and property fills as you’re typing which is good because i. forget what the options are)
If you want to go poking around in obsidian to figure out which selector is doing what, hit Ctrl+shift+i on windows (for mac, I believe it's command+option+i), and it’ll bring up the developer console, so you can use inspect element to track down selectors. (selectors are the thing you put after the period (.) and tell the css which element to target)
I like to make custom css classes for things, and to make one of those, you just type ‘.classname’ before the variable you want to change. E.g. for claws it looks like:
.claws.markdown-rendered h1 { font-family: LEVIBRUSH; }
then to add that to a note, you need to add the ‘cssclasses’ property in the frontmatter. you can make the frontmatter with three dashes like this:
--- cssclasses: claws ---
or you can use the properties side panel and hit ‘add property’ and then make cssclasses. this then means that all the css wizardry you do prefixed with that class will only apply to pages with that class, which I really like for making unique workspaces for different projects.
adding your snippet
so now you've made your snippet, you just need to load it in. the simplest way is to head to Settings -> Appearance, and scroll down to where it says 'CSS Snippets'. Hit the folder icon, and that'll open the folder you need to save the snippet.
make sure you save your notepad or brackets or whatever document as '.css' first. you can literally just do this by right clicking a saved notepad document and changing the name to 'name.css' if you need to.
save that css document into the snippets folder, go back to settings and hit the 'reload' snippets button to get it to show up, toggle it on, and voila!
now what you can do is edit that snippet live in obsidian just by. editing it. and hitting save. it'll live update and you can tinker. that's all i do: have brackets and obsidian open at the same time and just. fuck about till things work. i like problem solving, so it's usually fun for me :)
resources!
Obsidian CSS Quick Guide - Share & showcase - Obsidian Forum → a quick guide to poking around and how to find css classes in obsidian
Headings - Developer Documentation → full list of css variables you can play with. this gives you an idea of just how many things you can customise in obsidian which is to say. all of it.
i also just recommend googling around about CSS and how to use it. W3 schools is usually my go-to, it’s pretty good. Or searching ‘how to do x with css’ and usually either reddit or stackexchange will have decent answers.
you can find fonts all over, and i know google is a bitch, but google fonts has a bunch of good fonts. that's where most of mine are from, honestly
