Spent the last week slowly building another stool, this time completely by hand. This came out of my last post where there was a discussion about how hard it would be. Overall it wasn't that much harder then the first one. Only arduous part was ripping the legs out of the stock, and part of that was my rip saw needed sharpening.

I think it turned out pretty great, but my leg placement makes it look a bit wonky. The grain pattern on the seat is nice though.

Full pictures and process below the break

Step one find (or glue up) a large slab of wood, this one was sitting out in the garage. It's a piece of Ash.

Step two cut off part of the slab for the seat. (Also I still haven't made a proper handle for my vice. It's fine. It's only been 6 months)

Step three mark and cut the corners to make an octagon. I tried cutting a couple as I did in the picture, and a couple across the face. Both ways worked.

End up with a nice octagon, now plane it smooth

Then take the remaining bit of the original slab and rip it into three legs. (Forgetting to take a picture is optional.) Also take a break half way through and sharpen your saw. It makes the second half a lot easier

Finally end up with three legs, turn those legs into octagons and shave down the ends, My previous posts have a bit more info on that process.

Glue some legs on, and you have yourself a stool. All it needs now is some bits cut off, some sanding, and it’s ready for some shellac.

These were all the tools I used. (Yes I did cheat a bit with the hand drill, but I don’t have the right bits to put into my brace). Tools: 1. Marking Gauge (Could use a combination square as well) 2. Compass 3. 5/8th drill Bit, and 5/8th reamer, 5/8th tenon cutter. 4. Power Drill 5. Jack Plane 6. Block Plane 7. Spokeshave 8. Rip Saw 9. Crosscut saw 10. Bevel Gauge.

so i have this little birdhouse thingy, which is actually a place to put your keychains so that you can organize your keys (and doubles as an emergency whistle!)

and it got me thinking because, you know, the thing with al haitham and kaveh is that al haitham keeps snatching kaveh's keychain by mistake whenever he goes out, right?

so what if. what if you're in a poly relationship with them, and on your anniversary you gift them a handmade little bird house to hang on the wall, with three keychain slots, and a handcarved bird keychains for each of you?

al haitham's is obviously a hawk. kaveh's would be birds of paradise. and yours would be whatever bird you think would describe you best.

just imagine them receiving the present from you and kaveh just. straight up bawls. because finally. no more getting locked out of the house in the middle of the night. he'd probably kiss you all over your face while he's at it too.

and al haitham is touched too, of course - his little hawk is a tad wonky but he knows you carved it with love. but he's just standing there looking at kaveh and you, like "by some inexplicable inkling, i have a hunch that you are indirectly scolding me by giving me this present... still, thank you."

xey will only start acknowledging your efforts if you kinda play along with the whole ‘power dynamic’ thing gnarpy has set between your species. weird creature? that’s okay, gnarpy, but have you eaten anything today? xey’ll groan and walk off to do just that, telling you xey didn’t need a stupid reminder from you. but xe really did.

sometimes gnarpy’s uniform can get a little torn in battle, leaving xem looking a bit ridiculous, and complaining all the way back to you. that’s one thing you noticed, too— gnarpy always comes back. regardless of how much xe claims xey don’t need your help, xey don’t like you and never will, xey always find xeir way to you. as tv girl once said: “you know where to find me, and i know where to look”

back to my ORIGINAL point— the uniform. gnarpy may know... a lot of things, but one thing xey don’t know? how to sew. even a little hole has xem clueless. how did xey handle this problem before you? throwing the whole suit out, whether it’s salvageable or not, and retrieving a new one. that whole process nearly made your brain explode

you explain the concept of sewing to gnarpy and xey don’t seem to be having it. managing to sit the alien down on a stool with some bribery, you take your time patching up the hole, the fabric appearing as good as new. the whole time gnarpy was shaking a tad bit, somewhat fearing you’d poke xeir skin on accident, but seemed appreciative of the gesture, saying it wasn’t bad work for someone like you. and perhaps... a quiet thanks?

there’s a small chance gnarpy will purr if you’re alone together. whether you’re bandaging xem up from a battle, providing xem with some sustenance, or if you even manage to get close enough to comb xeir messy fur, you’ll be able to hear the faint noise. it’s a little embarrassing for xem so as long as you don’t poke fun at xem or mention it too much, it’ll be more reoccurring thing.

despite the verbal protests, grunts of frustration and cold stares, gnarpy deeply appreciates having someone like you in xeir life. it’s safe to say xey didn’t have much of a motherly role growing up based on how indifferent and rejecting xey are of your care at first, so to finally have someone fulfill that role means so much to xem, so so much. more than xey’d ever let you know.
