One of the best things about highschool ladies at 5 o’clock is that Finn himself has said that he doesn’t remember what the hell was going on with it so it’s free real estate for interpretation.

The song itself feels like Marvin asking himself what the girls he’s around daily actually do and drawing immature, incorrect conclusions on it. Surely they don’t really have rich inner lives? They’re women they uh. Go on walks? And talk about nonsensical things. They definitely look at that cool picture of me in the yearbook for sure. And when they see me of course they’re going to discuss me I’m very cool and popular, lots to discuss about me I’m so interesting. Girls would love to gossip about my love life. Wait. DO they talk about my love life? Do they compare things? Are they joining dots? Am I joining dots?

The album itself is pretty disjointed chronologically, but its always been interesting to me that highschool ladies at 5 o’clock is paired with the rape of miss goldberg. That song is a view of young Marvin’s immaturity from the point of view of an actual adult, so I think that it contrasts well with Marvin’s immaturity being expressed through his perspective of women, him once again having a sexuality crisis and immediately running off to assert his masculinity via bothering his teacher.
