Looking back now, it almost seems as though everything happened at once. In a decade dominated by youth, London had burst into bloom. It was swinging, and it was the scene. The Union Jack suddenly became as ubiquitous as the black cab or the red Routemaster bus, and all became icons of the city...Quite simply, London was where it was at. Fuelled by growing prosperity, social mobility, post-war optimism and wave after wave of youthful enterprise, the city captured the imagination of the world’s media. Here was the centre of the sexual revolution – the pill had been introduced in 1961 – the musical revolution, the sartorial revolution. London was a veritable cauldron of benign revolt.

the most important sabres videos from the 2022-23 season so i can cheer sabresblr up
because it is vital that we remember this year!!!!! this is the team that made us love sabres hockey again, no matter how far they didn't go.
now, in no particular order:
exclusive day with rasmus dahlin
youtube
what a GREAT way to start the season, truly!!!!! one of the first embeddeds we got featuring multiple members of the team, and UGH it gave us so many iconic moments. krebsy telling dylan he'll work him all day and that he's a fucker (muted for the children's sake). the chirps from everyone!!!! dylan and peyton literally encouraging each other to cheat just to try to beat ras. gave us some great character moments and really just gave us a good inside look into what the team dynamic is like and how much the guys love each other.
2. what a great day to be mic'd up | best of sabres mic'd up from december 2022 (actually from like february lmao)
youtube
lots of good moments from this one!!!!!! maybe not a fave for everyone, but certainly for me. lots of skinny and sammy in this one, and again it's just the daily interactions for me! i love to hear them talking about stupid things like gum and "too strong" is a classic dylan moment. it's just some silly good practice fun that makes me smile :)))
3. between 2 stalls
you all know and love it, i've included the whole playlist because every single one hits in a good and different way. it's absolutely the funniest thing the sabres have done media wise this year. it deserves an emmy and jeff skinner best leading actor or smth. i will pay good good money for more of these next season because they are hilarious. give me owen power squirminng while being questioned by jeff please and thank you.
4. hit the boards | owen power and ukko pekka luukonen
youtube
two soft and gentle giants not understanding that this is supposed to be a competitive series!!!!!!! you are not supposed to work together, you are supposed to compete!!!!!!! highlight of this one is owen getting "explosive diarrhea" way too fast and not being able to speak spanish. all with a small little laugh and smile along the way!
5. can't keep the beast in the cage
youtube
the fact that this is just a run of the mill presser that ended up creating a nickname, chirps in ANOTHER unrelated presser, just proves how good this video is. i mean what more can you want, it's just an excited kid ready to get out there! and we all need more devon levi in our lives if we are being truly honest.
6. sabres react to meme tweets
youtube
an ICONIC piece of media right here, i swear!!!!!!! "can you send me that?" so sammy can use this against them in the gc. jack quinn not knowing how to read allegations. tyson jost being so wholesome and hyping up his buddies. tommy dangles if you know you know. AND OF COURSE "daddy tuch".
7. jack and jj give the sabres holiday gifts
youtube
part 1 of this series is also a GEM, but unfortunately due to the 10 video attachment limit, i can only include part 2. highlights from part 1 include them buying owen a million gifts, dylan cozens' anger issues, them breaking a poster display because they don't know how posters work, and deciding to get gifts just to piss people off. part 2 however is this and MORE!!!!!! we get to see mostly EVERYONE get their gift! tage's this is slay moment was memed so many times, owen was overjoyed with his gifts, and let's not forget that "this is what the holidays are all about!" not to mention, sammy being the only one to get a fucked up gift made him so mad he decided he wanted the three pound gym weight
8. at home with casey mittelstadt, rasmus dahlin, dylan cozens, and jacob bryson
youtube
i'm honestly just here for dylan trying to hide from the camera and having to show up to "pay his rent" via being on camera. he also brings like a shit ton of water with him?????? AND "juicy lips" is a top 10 dylan cozens quote of all time. "they gave you pimples" too.
very much just. dylan cozens in this.
9. owen succumbs to peer pressure
youtube
aka the boys tell owen to take his hat off and let the flow go, and in true ferda fashion he does. of course, OF COURSE, the resounding cheer after is deafening and this is one of the best actual pressers from this season because of it
10. what's in the box
youtube
the first truly viral sabres moment from this season !!! ending it kinda where we started tbh. i STILL laugh about this moment, from the "i think it likes me" to the TENDER dylan/tage hand hold to peyton proudly pronouncing he knows his poops...this is just perfect. it set out all the narratives for the season and gives us an amazing glimpse into the boys. sabres socials set the bar high with this one and continued to meet it for the rest of the year
other honourable mentions include: tyson jost + others doing community work (highlights include tyson being wholesome and owen's awful rat photo being called unrecognizable), the la entourage trip (jack quinn speaking. that's it, that's the tweet.), sabres choose owen power's goal song (jack's loud proclamation of fearless and kyle's singing), how well do the sabres know their moms (owen being a momma's boy stands out here), matt savoie mic'd up (this one is self-indulgent and just for me), and owen and ras' podcast interview (shocked owen can speak for an hour straight without literally curling up into a ball and hiding; and also bagged milk)
so there you go!!!! hope this cheered you up like it did me. i love our boys as always and can't wait to see what they do next year!

reasons minnesota is the best us state
vote minnesota here, because im right and you know it
minnesota is the longest running democratic state. true blue. these colors don't run. this is probably because we want everyone to know its freaking cold here and staying blue every time we're on a map gets the point across
has the actual worst football team and everyone knows it but no one cares
home to the mayo clinic, 3m, target, and general mills who made what... that's right, count chocula, kids.
hot dish is a cool word and basically like depressioncore cooking
if you live in the south part of the state the hormel plant is slowly killing you to make canned spiced ham which is cool
one time they just elected a wrestler to office and like no one said anything
the state bird is the common loon who minnesotans have turned into indescribable monsters that attack children, cars, and trucks much like the geese that also terrorize half of the state
it is a major activity in at least one minnesotan town to tie a dollar store sled to a truck via rope and do donuts at extraordinary speeds with high schoolers loaded on top of each other in the sled until someone has to go to the er (that town is my town (no one has died (yet)))
Minnesota has the Mall of America which smells like that because there's apparently no heat. The sheer power of sweaty gross tourists helps the mall face the winter. baller.
if you like grocery bags with handles then man do i have good news for you
Diversity win! Gay icon Judy Garland is from Minnesota
Diversity Loss! Straight Icon Bob Dylan is from Minnesota
Minnesota has an amusement park named Valleyfair, which used to host the Berenstain Bears who famously smelled like b.o. and the broken dreams of children. This was good for tourism but bad for children. Now they have peanuts characters who cant dance but do smell better.
Minnesota has the world's second most mid renaissance faire, but you can bring your dog to it and I think that's something you need to know.
the average minnesotan eats 19 gallons of mayonnaise a year. this isn't a real fact but it sounds like it could be.
the minnesota state fair debuted butter on a stick. this was widely regarded to be 'an idea' and 'something that happened'
the twin cities are very flammable. burn them down.
trespassing is a very common hobby with many minnesotans breaking into private or abandoned property because there's not much else to do. this is because there is no jack in the box drive-thru in the state
Lutheran sushi is a dish that was invented by god and probably whispered to a lady named Edna in the middle of the night. It is made of pickles, ham, and cream cheese. Legend says it was the front runner for the official secret state food, bravely competing against tatertop hotdish.
Tumblr media
Every minnesotan town is the birthplace of paul bunyan. this is because he was very big. the only place that is not the birth place of paul bunyan is eden prarie which 90% of minnesota inexplicably hates
Minnesotans love complaining about the snow and how cold it gets there, unless you mention that you feel a chill elsewhere, then all minnesotans become the picture of winter survival and mock you for disliking the cold.
in summary, minnesota is the best, screw the rest.

hello!! i’ve been reading your works for the character analysis and i wanted to say that i love what you write about eddie kaspbrak! especially, getting at all the details from the book. but i wanted to ask you.
which eddie kaspbrak is better portrayed? the 1990’s version or the 2017 and 2019? personally i love the 1990’s more. :)
Thank you so much! Eddie is one of my favorite characters to write meta about, he's just got so much going on that's worth reading into.
As far as which portrayal is my favorite, I'd probably rank it like this:
Dennis Christopher is my #1, but it's a close race. He really captures Eddie's youthfulness and nervousness without making him lacking in bravery. But really, it's the behind the scenes stuff that makes this version of Eddie so great. Dennis Christopher really put a LOT of thought into how he was going to play Eddie and even though the writers didn't explicitly say he was gay, that's how Dennis played him. He also chose the iconic Running Up That Hill as Eddie's song, and made sure his hair was perfectly flouncy for the role.
Jack Dylan Grazer comes next by a hair because he struck a perfect balance between Eddie's soft side and his fiery side. His Eddie is argumentative and neurotic while still being compassionate and truly adorable. He's also very brave! Jack really made sure there was a clear difference between Eddie as he is around his mother and Eddie as he is around his friends. And Jack clearly really loved this role and put thought into it - he kept adding songs to his Wheezie's playlist ages after the movie premiered. That being said - Jack in Ch.2 flashbacks was NOT the same... it really felt like he was just playing himself in those.
Adam Faraizl comes in at a low third because he's pretty much just cute in a grumpy sort of way. His version of Eddie captures how serious he tends to be as a kid but there's not a whole lot more to his portrayal. He doesn't open up as much as Eddie does throughout the summer of '58 in the novel. There's a lot less nuance to him, but I think if you combined his portrayal with Jack's, you'd end up with a close (but not exact) interpretation of kid Eddie as he is in the novel.
And finally... James Ransone. Honestly when this casting was first announced I was really excited about it because I really liked him in Sinister and a few other roles. He looked the part, too. I went into Ch.2 with very high expectations for his version of Eddie, and was very let down. It's partly due to the script being poorly written, because they really did a disservice to Eddie's character making him mean and cowardly for most of the film and then giving him a lame death scene. But a lot of the fault falls on James Ransone REALLY phoning it in and being lazy about the role. He basically just copied Jack's mannerisms without any of the heart and soul Jack put into the role in 2017. It was just bland and very unlike 'true' Eddie, who has SO much depth and SO much nuance and really isn't aggressive at all. I blame James Ransone for doing irreparable damage to the way Eddie was portrayed in fanworks after Ch.2 premiered, and that's unforgivable to me.
That all being said... nothing can ever compare to book Eddie. He's the best of all time.

alright boys, finished the game, here are my honest opinions of chars and final thoughts
i finally finished jack's playthrough, so here i am talking to the void about my faves
Dylan This isn't surprising. Dylan's my absolute favorite character in the game and he is hashtag slay and hashtag epic. He's funny, he's silly, he's the whole package. It's impossible to hate him, and if u do, ur in denial <3 /j I'd let him ruin my life.
Emma Emma's great. She was an asshole with the whole kiss with Nick, but after that she's great. Capital G girlboss. I'd let her ruin my life, too.
Kaitlyn I am so utterly disappointed that she was, in comparison to the other characters, hardly in the game. And the times she was, we learned so little about her. She's funny and she really, in my opinion, was the greatest person for banter other than Dylan, both of them are an iconic duo I love them and her.
Laura I'll be honest, I was really confused as to why everyone loved Laura so much at first, but that was just because I hadn't gotten far enough to know she'd return. But she's another capital G girlboss that I love.
Ryan Ryan's character kind of... lacked character, to put it frankly. I really enjoyed his banter with Dylan, but other than that, he was pretty stoic. Which is his character, I just kind of wish we saw more opening up toward Dylan or whoever.
Max Himbo. Do I need to explain further?
Jacob Also himbo. Also naked the entire fuckin game which is hilarous
Abigail We literally just hardly see her ever. I have nothing against her it's just that after Nick got infected she was hardly involved.
Nick Same reasoning here. I really loved Nick at the beginning but because he got infected so early I just haven't gotten to know him.
I plan on getting the game and playing myself, but as for watching a playthrough, these are my final standings on the characters :)
I also wanted to complain about the lack of closure for these characters. Would have loved to see a Max and Laura reunion. Would have loved to see all the characters realize each other are alive, too, something that isn't just "they got arrested lol here's a podcast." I don't know how evidence plays into it. Like, if you get all the evidence, are the teens okay? Or maybe do they get freed after the podcast takes light to the evidence? I have no idea but something tells me that's unlikely?
But yeah. Great game, just lacking closure. Now that I'm caught up I'm excited to interact with the community here.
:)

I just watched Now You See Me the other day and now I can't stop thinking about the pogues as the four horsemen.
John B is J Daniel Atlas (the standard above average street magician), Pope is Merritt McKinney (the mentalist), Kie is Henley Reeves (the escapologist*) and JJ is Jack Wilder (the slight of hand hustler).
The four of them pulling off crazy tricks and Robin Hooding, running from the FBI while being the most dramatic bitches possible. JJ faking his own death in a car crash. Look me in the eyes and tell me that doesn't match up perfectly. The only thing that doesn't match up is the unresolved feelings between Atlas and Henley, but we can just ignore that and replace it with the relationship between Lula and Jack in Now You See Me 2 and it becomes Jiara (using Lula as a swap for Henley but keeping it as Kie in this AU)
And then Now You See Me 2, imagine Arthur Tressler and Walter Mabry as Ward and Rafe. I think that's iconic.
Idk what to do with Sarah and Cleo in this AU (and idk if there are appropriate stand ins for Dylan Rhodes and Thaddeus Bradley) but honestly idc, the og four pogues as the four horsemen is so fun
*I say escapologist based only on her opening scene with the piranha tank because I didn't know what else I could give her as a title other than being 'the girl'

'Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is poised to grab another record in its historic opening run at the worldwide box office, by becoming the highest grossing biopic in history after overtaking the 2018 musical film, Bohemian Rhapsody which told the life story of the iconic musician Freddie Mercury and, in a broader sense, the storied career of the legendary music group, Queen.
Bohemian Rhapsody grossed $910.8 million from an estimated $55 million budget—a staggering box office success by any measure. While Oppenheimer carried a meatier $100 million budget, it has now surpassed that box office gross and can claim the biopic title alongside various other accolates it has picked up on its enormously successful journey since it premiered on July 21.
Oppenheimer tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who served as the director of the Manhattan Project, which was based in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The Manhattan Project was a secret research group tasked with developing and putting into practice the very first weapon of mass destruction, with an eye on using it to conclude the Second World War. Cillian Murphy plays the eponymous Oppenheimer, alongside Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Kenneth Branagh, Jason Clarke, Josh Harnett, Dylan Arnold, Benny Safdie, James D'Arcy, Tony Goldwyn, Olivia Thirlby, and Jack Quaid, to name a few.
The Rami Malek Cinematic Universe
Of course, the biggest winner in this battle is Rami Malek, who appears in both films, albeit in substantially differing roles when it comes to screentime. Malek, as everyone will remember, won the first Academy Award of his career for playing the lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury, in Bohemian Rhapsody. While his role in Oppenheimer amounts to a glorified cameo, it's a mighty few minutes he's on screen in the role of David Hill, one of the scientists who idolised the work of Oppenheimer and whose testimony uncovered the conspiracy wrought against Oppenheimer by Lewis Strauss (played by Robert Downey Jr. in the film), costing Strauss his nomination as the US Secretary of Commerce.
Filled with practical effects, combined with an outstanding musical score by Ludwig Göransson and stunning cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema, the film continues to pack IMAX theaters where it still plays, and will return later this year as a dual consequence of the ongoing strikes, plus audience demand. Regarded as Nolan's most mature work to date, the film leans into an ominous, dialogue-driven tone, diverging from the high spectacle he's typically associated with. Furthermore, Oppenheimer is positioned as a strong contender in the Oscar race for 2024, and may yet nab Nolan his elusive Best Director award at last.'

105: Mink DeVille // Return to Magenta
Tumblr media
Return to Magenta Mink DeVille 1978, Capitol
Not many more aptly named acts of the late ‘70s than Mink DeVille—they absolutely sound like the most plushly-upholstered ride in creation. Though it would ultimately become a solo vehicle for lupine crooner Willy DeVille (born William Paul Paul Borsey, Jr.), the early Mink DeVille was a genuine band, and a wonderful band at that. They were one of the main draws at CBGBs during the prime years of NYC punk, but drew from the same well of classic romantic R&B sources Springsteen did (e.g. The Drifters, The Shangri-Las), delivered with a louche New York swagger reminiscent of Lou Reed. Still, there was a sympathy between Mink DeVille’s music and that of the Ramones, who were fellow Spectorphiles, and Patti Smith, who was transforming staples like “Land of a Thousand Dances” and “Gloria” into incantatory raveups. ‘70s New Wave was in part a revival of the chaotic energy and adolescent joys of pre-British Invasion rock ‘n’ roll, and no band embodied that tradition like Mink DeVille.
youtube
Both their 1977 debut, Cabretta, and 1978’s follow-up Return to Magenta are close to my heart, and I’d place them on a similar tier to the landmarks of their generation at CBGBs (Rocket to Russia, Marquee Moon, ’77 etc.). Cabretta has the higher highs (namely “Spanish Stroll” and “Venus of Avenue D”), but they don’t make more pleasurable start-to-finish listens than Return to Magenta. On Cabretta, producer Jack Nitzsche held back on the iconic string arrangements he’d brought to his work under Phil Spector, but here he dresses the band’s Latin-spiced ballads in gossamer threads. Listening to “Guardian Angel” and “Just Your Friends,” I can hear what everyone from Nitzsche to Doc Pomus to Mick Jagger heard in their music: a thru-line back to the first music the first rock generation had driven to, slow-danced to, kissed to. Amid all the triumphs scattered across 83 minutes of The River, Springsteen never wrote a ballad as stylish or elegant as “I Broke That Promise.” Bruce, though his love of the sounds of his youth was deep, wanted to do something rambling and new with it, as his idol Dylan had with folk music; Willy DeVille wanted something more timeless, to be the eternal slicked-back crooner with a switchblade in his pocket and a burning in his heart. And that he was.
