The last two lines I wrote:

“Are you sure about this?” Evi asks. “I know you’re-“

“Desperate?” I raise an eyebrow. “I am, Evi.”

And here’s a little thing that happened before the beginning. It takes place about a year or two, three before the start of the story. I mainly just wanted to introduce the other Lowell siblings, and give you a look at their dynamic.

The long, winding hallways of the palace are quiet. That’s nothing new, although this silence feels heavier somehow. My footsteps echo and bounce off the walls, throwing the sound back at me as if to taunt me.

A shadow shrouded in purple and black slips out from an alcove and keeps pace with me.

“Any changes?” Morgan asks. Her voice is familiar: rough around the edges if you know her well, but smooth to everyone else.

I shake my head. “Nothing so far.”

“And Jason-“

“He doesn’t know any more than we do.”

Morgan slips a knife from the folds of her dress and flips it open, spinning it expertly between her long fingers. When we were children, it scared me how comfortable she was with knives. Even though she’s older than me, I always worried she would get hurt. But she never did.

“I wish there was something we could do rather than just wait,” she says, twisting the blade between her fingers. Then she flips it up in the air and catches it in her other hand. “It’s driving me up the wall.”

“I know.” It’s a meaningless statement, but I don’t know what else to say. Still, I don’t want to be adding to the suffocating silence.

We take a turn by at the end of the corridor, into a hallway with open arches leading outside. Morgan gracefully swings her legs over the edge and sits down, heedless of the blizzard outside. The cold wind tugs at her long black hair, peppering it with snow.

I join her and look down. I can barely see the pines far below, let alone anyone who might be approaching.

“There’s my favourite siblings,” a loud voice exclaims over the howling winds.

Morgan and I barely have time to scoot aside before our younger brother, Jason, drops down between us. Morgan immediately fixes him with a stern glare.

“Were you scaling the walls in this weather?”

Jason has the decency —or common sense— to blush. “Maybe?”

Morgan is entirely unamused, and it’s times like this that I remember she’s the oldest. She decides against having this discussion now, however, and just sighs. Jason’s grin fades when he sees how tired she looks.

“Any news from dad?”

He’s the only one of us who stills calls our father —our king— dad.

“No,” I reply, opting to take this burden from our sister. “The messengers won’t be able to get to the palace in this weather.”

Jason glared into the storm as if it has personally offended him. In follow his eyes, back to where I know the mountains are. Beyond those mountains, our father has joined the battle to protect our lands. We have so little fertile ground, the ground hard with frost nine months of the year, and our neighbours are still trying to claim them.

“He’ll be alright,” Morgan says decidedly.

I nod, more for Jason’s sake than because I believe her.

He’ll be alright. He has to be. I’m not ready to become king.

Fancasting for a Trigun live-action tv series/movie!! I know we got just Trigun Stampede, but we can’t let Cowboy Bebop get a live action and not Trigun right??

For all my selections I would say about 75-80% are actors I have seen in one or more of their most well known roles. For anyone else I narrowed down to 2-4 options and I did extra research into their filmography, interviews to hear their voices and general vibe, etc. And I also looked at what kind of roles they trended towards—sci-fi/fantasy and superhero media giving them bonus points.

See below for info about the actors and my runner up choices for each character. I included tidbits like their age, height, and notable roles.

For Vash and Knives I wanted to first look for real life identical twins. After some research, I believe I found a fitting pair. Cole and Dylan Sprouse, best know for their childhood roles in the Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Although I don’t think I knew their adult roles as well as their Zack and Cody days, that real twin dynamic just adds that extra layer.

Of the two, I found Cole having a softer look, and lately it appears he’s been going with black hair which seemed fitting if we think about black-haired Vash at the end of TriMax. Dylan’s look has just that different sharpness and edginess that I slotted him to Knives.

Ruby Cruz (Kit Tanthalos, Disney+’s Willow) is a very talented young woman and recently made a feature length movie debut as Hazel Callahan in Bottoms (2023) and will be starring in an upcoming rom-com The Threesome. (See notes about edit below.)

Milly was a tricky one for me. I have a couple of runners up below. My current pick is Mina Sundwall, especially for her role as Penny Robinson in Netflix’s space family drama Lost in Space.

Although I’m on board with the HC that Wolfwood is Latinx, I had to go with famous werewolf Jacob Black from Twilight, Taylor Lautner. I got a couple other choices below too.

Liam Hemsworth (or Chris idkkkk). Nuff said?

Rem was a bit hard to choose. I had to go with Candice Patton as a personal big fan of her role as Iris West in The Flash as a DC fan. She has just the right oh-crap-I-have-kids-I-am-not-prepared-at-all motherly acting vibe down pat that is essential for Rem.

Despite the fact that Christopher Daniel Barnes is always smiling in photos, his breath of filmography makes him such a good fit for wise Drunkle Roberto.

Being so effing hyped about Nicholas playing Lex Luthor in Superman Legacies (2025) he has the perfect mix of heroic and villain roles for Legato’s psychotic righteousness. And he’s already had blue hair (and fur all over his whole body) as Hank “Beast” McCoy, c’mon too easy.

Zazie Beetz… that couldn’t have been a coincidence? Like Studio Orange must have know about this actress when they worked on the Beast’s revamped design. For a second option I’d probably pick a child/adolescent actor but Zazie can pretty much take whatever form they want, so why not both? Edit: I’m going with Scarlett (Trixie from Lucifer). Very very talent young woman. She’s funny, smart, sassy.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., told Hunter Biden's attorney, Abbe D. Lowell, on Friday, that an Oversight Committee hearing on alleged influence peddling and the Biden family's business dealings "will proceed forward — with or without Mr. Biden" next week, after Lowell said the president's son would not attend.

Comer had invited Biden and business associates Tony Bobulinski, Devon Archer and Jason Galanis to testify at a public hearing at 10 a.m. on March 20.

WASHINGTON – Hunter Biden, the president’s son, was indicted on charges he failed to pay his income taxes, Justice Department special counsel David Weiss announced Thursday.

The announcement came months after a plea deal over tax and gun charges collapsed. Under the agreement, which a federal judge rejected, Hunter Biden was set to plead guilty to two misdemeanor counts of failing to pay taxes in 2017 and 2018.

Biden is charged in a California federal court with three felony tax offenses and six misdemeanors. He engaged in a scheme in which he failed to pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed taxes from 2016 through 2019, and also evaded tax assessment for 2018 when he filed false returns, according to the indictment.

From 2016 to 2020, Biden spent money "on drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature, in short, everything but his taxes," according to the indictment.

Separately, Weiss has charged Hunter Biden in Delaware with three federal gun charges, basically alleging he lied about using drugs when he bought a revolver in 2018. Biden pleaded not guilty to the charges Oct. 3.

"Based on the facts and the law, if Hunter’s last name was anything other than Biden, the charges in Delaware, and now California, would not have been brought," said Abbe Lowell, an attorney for Hunter Biden, in a statement.

"Now, after five years of investigating with no new evidence -- and two years after Hunter paid his taxes in full -- the U.S. Attorney has piled on nine new charges when he had agreed just months ago to resolve this matter with a pair of misdemeanors," Lowell said.

Biden faces a maximum penalty of 17 years in prison if convicted on the tax charges, the Justice Department said in a press release. It noted that actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than maximum penalties.

Congressman Jason Smith, who heads the House Ways and Means Committee, said in a statement that the new charges further confirm the need for Congress to conduct an impeachment inquiry of Joe Biden "in order to uncover all the facts." The charges address years in which Hunter Biden earned millions of dollars by selling access to a family brand that was built on Joe Biden's political career, he said.

What are the tax charges?

While failing to pay his taxes, Biden allegedly spent millions on an extravagant lifestyle. In 2018, for example, he made about $383,000 in payments to women and spent about $151,00 on clothes and accessories, according to the charges.

Biden faces two felony charges of filing a false return and one felony charge of tax evasion. The six misdemeanor counts are for allegedly failing to file returns or pay his taxes when required.

Prosecutors have said Hunter Biden took in $2.4 million in income in 2017 and $2.1 in 2018 through Ukrainian energy firm Burisma, a Chinese-development firm, as well as domestic business interests and legal services.

Leo Wise, an assistant U.S. attorney, said at a July court hearing that an accountant prepared Biden's taxes both of those years, but his corporate and personal taxes were not paid. During this period, Hunter Biden made large cash withdrawals and covered other expenses like car payments on a Porsche, Wise said.

Hunter Biden told the court a "third party" paid the back taxes along with interest and fees pursuant to a personal loan he has not begun to repay.

Why did the judge reject the plea agreement?

Prosecutors had recommended probation for the two misdemeanor tax charges in the plea agreement, despite each carrying a maximum sentence of 12 months in prison. The agreement over the gun charge anticipated a pretrial diversion program that would wipe the charge off Biden’s record if he complied.

House Republicans called the agreement a “sweetheart deal” for lack of jail time.

U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika rejected the deal because of a dispute between prosecutors and defense lawyers over what it meant. Biden's lawyers argued that he would be protected from prosecution in future cases, but prosecutors denied that.

Cadoc finds himself conducting a burial service during which Black Jel takes the opportunity to follow a local Saxon to the nearby pasture marked with symbols holy to Woden before all four Heroes follow the clues revealed to Fynn by his Sight. There's a Mysterious Winding Path, a Fae Guardian, and a Revelation that suggests both the Christ God and the Allfather are being set up to take the blame. Then...a monstrous Raven and the souls it has consumed before the Darkness within it flees...

They must battle these threats and retrieve the Engines, all while keeping the Leviathan from awakening. But the cost includes Radiant/Sia's fall into eclipse.

Free from the Shadow: Samurai Fantasy (Session 5) Lowell Francis runs for Cale P, Elle, Mike Minutillo, and Sherri The protagonists travel to the north to met the Tengu and gain their aid in Asaka's recovery. Then the great Imperial Project is complete and we move the story forward ten years.

Hearts of Yokai (Session 5) Lowell Francis runs for Agatha, Anders, Donogh, and Sabine V. Scale gets a call from his rival about the decapitation of the Dominus of the Court of Tides and attack on Spinning Ginny. He arranges for a meet up with his three companions, who eventually arrive after complications with a stolen gift panther. They discover the murder weapon they "picked up" is not the same blade they encountered earlier. Following that back leads them to a dead cultist, a sticky punk club, and a cadre of vampires waiting out in the street.

Micah, Jason and I saw Gruff (pronounced Griff) Rhys (Reese) last night in Sacramento. It was one of the coolest overall shows I've seen in a while. Gruff and his band rocked hard and also performed a few "skits".

Opening was Sacramento band Desario. I'd never heard of them, but when I saw the rhythm guitar and bass player had Rickenbackers I was locked in. I'd looked them up before the show and had seen shoegaze bands Ride and Lush used for comparison. But someone also mentioned The Chills and Orange Juice.

Without a doubt there is a shoegazey sound at work, but I see the other band comparisons as being legit. "Signal and Noise" is their newest release (LP on Fort Lowell Records, and CD on Sunday Records) but this band goes back to the early 2000s. Members have been in other Sacramento bands Rocketship and Holiday Flyer.

Does not yet have the confidence and bravery of their dads but will get there in time. Has a love-hate relationship with her cousin Amie, who picks on her like its her job but will also be there to give her some stoic words of wisdom. Hell I can imagine Amie taking a valuable collectable he had out of the box and spinning it into some kind of narrative about enjoying life instead of just dreaming about it. While she's the Aimarusoranulf kid's nibling, she's essentially like a younger sibling, especially since she and Tycho are the same age (Tycho is a month older). Jarvis is probably closest with Tycho because of this, and Tycho tries their best to get Jarvis out of his shell alongside Griffen. Feels a lil intimidated by how accomplished and high-ranking most of her family is, and feels a bit out of place. Is probably the most comfortable working on Link's farm, where they don't have to worry about impressing anyone. Her weapon of choice is PSI!

Golden Bears Win V8+, 2V8+, Freshmen 8+ Races

LOWELL – The No. 1 California men's rowing team had another outstanding week of racing, securing the Pac-12 Championship title for the second year in a row. After winning the 2V8+ race, The Golden Bears had a three-point lead in the standings going into the final race as they split the 3V8+ and freshmen 8+ races with Washington, leaving it up to the varsity eight crew to bring home the title. In the V8+ race, Cal and Washington were even through the start but the Bears we able to build a deck lead in the opening 500 meters. Cal continued to push and opened a bow to stern lead through the halfway mark. The Bears didn't let up and grew their lead to open water in the third 500 meters, managing to finish four seconds ahead of Washington in a time of 5:34.673 to secure the Pac-12 Championship. "I'm really proud of how the entire team raced today led by the varsity eight, who I think had a great race," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "I'm also really pleased with how the second varsity eight, freshmen eight and varsity four raced. The conditions were a little rough with the crosswind at the start, but calmed down through the morning and were pretty good by the time the varsity eight race. After jumping out to an early bow to stern lead over Washington, the second varsity eight crew overcame some adversity in its race as the Stanford boat veered towards it during the second 500 meters. The Bears were able to maintain their composure and managed to pull away, but then had to fend off a surging Washington boat that pulled within half a length in the final 500 meters. Cal was able to hold off the Huskies' push and finish a half-boat ahead in a time of 5:38.058. "I'm really happy with how the second varsity eight got out and attacked the race, which was a focus, and then managed the adversity through the middle and dug in and held on for the win," Frandsen said. In the 3V8+ race, Cal got out to an even start with Washington but fell a deck behind early. The Huskies increased their lead to a half-boat by the halfway mark and continued to push the distance between them and the Bears throughout the remainder of the race. In the beginning of the freshmen 8+ race, the Bears fell behind half of a boat in the opening 500 meters behind Washington; that lead stretched to almost a length by the 1000m. Cal started to move back on Washington through the third quarter of the race and drew level roughly 200m before the finish line. Showing great composure and belief, the Bears pushed ahead to win by one-second win with a time of 5:47.100. In the varsity four race, Cal and Washington jumped out ahead of the pack with the Bears about a half boat back through the opening 500 meters. Cal made a strong move towards the halfway mark and overtook the Huskies with a deck lead. The Bears continued their push building a bow to stern lead through the third 500 meters and came away with a two-second win in a time of 6:24.270. The Bears now shift their focus to getting faster over the next three weeks leading up to the IRAs in Mercer, New Jersey June 2-4. "It's always good to get beyond the exams and beyond this weekend and have about 12 days in Berkeley before we move east to New Jersey.
