Genuinely good YA thriller.

The Stagsblood Prince by Gideon E Wood - 4.25/5 stars

This one ripped my heart out and I am going to be PISSED if there isn't a happy ending in the third book in the trilogy.

You First by JC Lillis - 4.25/5 stars

You'd think a book that is essentially an Incredibles AU would be lighthearted, right? You wouldn't think you'd practically be sobbing by the end? Haha! You thought wrong!

Wranglestone by Darren Charlton - 4.25/5 stars

I initially rated this 4.25 stars but honestly I might bump it up to 4.5. It's a zombie story but it was really well done, and I ordered the second book in the series the minute I finished this one.

The Falcon and the Foe by AJ Truman - 3.75/5 stars

Felix Silver, Teaspoons, & Witches by Harry Cook - DNF

This one was too Middle Grade for me.

Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers - 3.5/5 stars

So I won my local indie bookstore's trivia in March and the first place prize was a bunch of books that I never would have picked up on my own, including this one. I bumped it to the front of my TBR pile because I thought it would make a good comp for the manuscript I'm editing - it's about a woman who meets and drunkenly marries a stranger in Vegas, then falls in love with her afterwards. The book is really not a romance though, and is actually about burnout. I might have rated it higher if it didn't sell itself as a romance.

The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley - 5/5 stars

"What if France won the Napoleonic Wars because of time travelers" shouldn't have shattered me the way this book did, but of course it's a Natasha Pulley novel so it absolutely did. There isn't a single one of her books that don't live in my mind rent free for apparently the rest of time after I read them, but man. I'm not sure if this one hurt as much as The Lost Future of Pepperharrow, but it's pretty close. Missouri Kite is the most Gay Little Man™. And Joe, poor Joe. The PINING. The YEARNING. When the reveal happens, I had to go back and read prior sections of the book and good god do they hit different. Different and SADDER. AKDJF;AKDJFKDAFJ;D JUST PLEASE READ IT PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

A Destiny of Dragons by TJ Klune - DNF

Not only did I DNF this, I removed the rest of the series from my TBR pile and will be offloading them at my local indie bookstore's next book buy-back. I think the worst part of this one was that he dedicated it to his eighth grade English teacher, who apparently told him his stories would never amount to anything. And like. What an awful thing for a teacher to tell a kid (sidebar, my eighth grade English teacher is one of the reasons I started to really take writing seriously, she was amazingly supportive - thank you, Mrs. Brzezinski!). But reading this series is like...you know, she might have had a point. I KID I KID WE ALL KNOW KLUNE ACTUALLY CAN WRITE but holy shit again, this series is so bad. The writing was a little better than The Lightning-Struck Heart but the characters are so fucking annoying. The term Mary Sue gets thrown around a lot and I'm generally not a fan of its application (since usually it's used to tear down teenage girls) but Sam of Wilds is such a fucking Mary Sue (or Gary Stu, I guess, but down with the gender binary, let's just have one word). Everyone wants to have sex with him and while it may have been sort of funny at first (it wasn't), by book 2, the joke has worn extremely thin. Also there's a prophecy about him, because of course there is. And he's the most powerful wizard ever. And yeah, I've read a lot of books where there's a prophecy about the MC and they're the Most Powerful Magic Person Ever, but they're usually not this annoying.

Chainbreaker by Tara Sim - 5/5 stars

This is book 2 of a really interesting and original fantasy/steampunk series. I really enjoyed the first one but this one was even better. It takes place in a world where time running correctly is controlled by clock towers. The main character is a clock mechanic (obviously an important job) who falls in love with the clock spirit of the town of Enfield (delightful, since my wife is from Enfield and it's not a place you often see mentioned in fiction). This book raises the stakes of the first one and takes place largely in India. Highly recommend.

Hummingbird Heartbreak by Max Walker - 2.75/5 stars

I found Dusty's reaction to the reveal of Brandon's past to be over-the-top and unreasonable (like, unreasonable within the context of the story - obviously characters can react unreasonably to things, but it still needs to make sense for them!). I probably would have rated this 3 stars if not for that, because it's a sweet enough love story.

The World We Make by NJ Jemisin - 2.5/5 stars

NK Jemisin, please do not read this. Jemisin has been open about how difficult this book was to write, and about the fact that she couldn't handle the trilogy she'd planned and took it down to a duology, and…unfortunately, it shows. I loved the first book but this one was a disappointing finale. The pacing was uneven and the character development stalled. Plot threads were introduced and either vanished (Bronca's new girlfriend) or were resolved in a way that felt unearned (the mayoral race, Manny's true identity, honestly the whole big conflict). Aislyn was an interesting character who ultimately felt underutilized. I actually, physically cringed at a couple points during this book—the coda was really just one long cringe, and the other moment was when Brooklyn calls...Beyonce. Who is an old friend. But then Beyonce is never brought up again and I couldn't tell you what the purpose of her inclusion in the book was. I'm sure some people love that kind of stuff but I can't stand it.

I did really love the other cities though! If Jemisin ever returned to this universe, I'd read a book about Faiyum in a heartbeat. His snark and his gay little crocodile earring were chef's kiss.

Jemisin is a fabulous writer and all my issues with this book feel like the result of an author forcing herself to write something she wasn't feeling and just wanted to be done with. Disappointing all the same since I had really been looking forward to this one.

The Sugared Game by KJ Charles - 5/5 stars

It is not possible to go wrong with an AJ Charles book and this one is no exception. I love Kim and Will so much, and I really really hope the third book builds on the trust they established in this one.

Sixteen Souls by Rose Talbot - 3.75/5 stars

I liked this book but I did find myself, at the climax, wondering why on earth living people would sacrifice themselves to save ghosts from...being more dead? Like. They're...already dead.

As far as I remember, there was an arranged marriage between wwx and Iwj, but on the next day/a week after the wedding Iwj goes to see wen qing, which makes wwx miserable and yzy mad because of his "incompetence" as a spouse. Then there was a discussion between sect leaders, including wrh, where wrh announced that wq will become Iwj's concubine and their children will be considered Iwj's and wwx's. Wwx accepts the terms, but is shocked, mad and heartbroken beecause he concludes that it was planned in advance and Iwj is in love with wq. He does not try to listen to lwj, warns him not to touch him and runs away to a cottage in yiling (maybe? And maybe owned by jc or jyl) where he usually resides when mdm yu gets mad at him and kicks him out of the main sect territory

He takes in some homeless kids, including xy, as his little students?/adoptees? and i think mm is his servant, and he chills with them and makes talismans for common people maybe, remaking his reputation which suffered after the marriage fiasco. There was also a ghost of a woman who was in the house and was looking at wwx silently but in a very sad way (maybe possibly it could be madam lan or just undisclosed ghost lady)

There was a scene when wq comes to visit him. She has a lan ribbon on her arm which makes wwx heartbroken again. She somehow explains without apologising that everything is not as it seems and that it had to be done to save her family. It all makes wwx feel like he was outcasted by everyone in the knowledge of the situation for no real reason and with no care for his own reputation and life. Also I think mm who previously thought that she and wq were maybe friends says after the talk that it seems like they are not really friends because wq seems to treat her not as an equal but as a friendly servant instead

Then something something with wc and I remember a scene in a cave where wx and Iwj are trapped and somehow kiss, and then Iwj is like pulling himself away and mentioning wq, which makes wwx miserable because there is possibly a soulmate thingy? btw them and he feels awful

And then i remember jzx, who is maybe friends with Iwj, being mad at wwx for something and asking if he knew what Iwj did for him and wwx has absolutely no idea

The latest chapters I remember included some nsfw, more angst and misunderstandings, and possibly Iwj blaming wwx for pretending to ignore/knowingly hiding the fact that they are soulmates and wwx being scared that his kids will be taken away from him and given to the lans. And there was a heavy sence that there are lots of things happening wwx has no idea about, including (possibly) lwj's letters to him

Wei Ying sent Lán Wangji his drawing of a field of white bunnies (and I belief his donkey was in the picture as well?) and a letter. This was the last thing he sent to Lán Wangji before he disappeared. I remember Sizhui being with Lan Wangji and other junior disciples in the search for Wei Wuxian. Hello, for fic finder I want to find a short story set post canon where Wei Wuxian is transformed into a cat and keeps Jin Ling company, I vaguely remember a scene where Wei Wuxian in cat form bapped Fairy on the nose with his paw and stared in wonder at his paws possibly realising he had claws or in wonder that he touched a dog without running away screaming. I think he later figured out how to transform into his cat form at will to nap in sunbeams. Finding this story has been driving me nuts any help is greatly appreciated. @sorathemasterofmasters

- its a modern fic. wei ying is sick then he lives with the lans. i remember him going to the same school(?) with lan zhan. i think lqr told lz to take care of him smth like that. then there's a girl that is also sick(?) there's a scene where wy asked lz to stay with him but then lz left and chose the other girl (lz didnt know that wx is sick and he was like the girl needs me more than u) there's a confession on a radio station(?) then when lz found out that wy is sick he ran back to him. there's also jiang-wen family connections. wy is cousins to the jiangs and has a connection with wens, im not sure if rouhan is his grandfather or uncle or smth. then they found out there's a scene where madam yu slapped the girl because of what she did (hurt wy) and they cut off ties (business/job) with their family

im not sure if im talking about one story or two.

For #17 I'm sure I've read the fic but it was when I was early into fandom and new to AO3. Also the girl is engaged to LWJ or something. WWX already is in love with LWJ, but he's sick and gonna die in a year

19. I’m looking for a wangxian modern with cultivation fic where WWX was kicked out of yunmeng for something that Jiang Cheng did. He wound up having most of his golden core removed but was able to recultivate one. Cultivators had to wear body cams when on assignment, and someone hacked into the files and released the film of what actually happened during the night hunt that WWX got kicked out for.

I didn’t actually read it, I saw the summary and tags and planned to go back and read it later…and now I can’t find it. 90% sure it was complete and it’s on Ao3.

hi! so I just watched the netflix show xo, kitty and I absolutely loved it!! Now I'm very much in a fun ya queer romance mood. my problem is there are SO MANY out there I don't know which to pick! (never thought this would be an issue id be having when I was a teenager! that makes me happy :)) anyway I was wondering if you could give me some recs you wish more people would read so I can pick from those instead of my massive wishlist lol. thank you!

I haven't watched the show so I don't know what's a close match, but I can definitely recommend some fun YA queer romances! Jennifer Dugan writes some of my faves of these - I personally love Hot Dog Girl most but Some Girls Do is her most popular. Love love Leah Johnson's You Should See Me in a Crown, Kelly Quindlen's You Drive Me Crazy, Adiba Jaigirdar's Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating, Alyson Derrick and Rachael Lippincott's She Gets the Girl, and Becky Albertalli's Imogen, Obviously - those are all Sapphic, and I have a few books that fit, too - Cool for the Summer, Home Field Advantage, and Going Bicoastal!

For some other pairings, I love Camp by L.C. Rosen, Fifteen Hundred Miles from the Sun by Jonny Garza Villa, Always the Almost by Edward Underhill, and How to Repair a Mechanical Heart by JC Lillis in m/m, and I'll Be the One by Lyla Lee is a fave for me in m/f!

Ashrah:: works(owns?) a small business, Erotic Arts, a sexshop. Everything from BDSM to fetishes to accessories - you can buy it there. Part-timer tattooist and does piercings at Kenshi's. Sareena's older sibling. Quan Chi's daughter. Nonbinary she/they.

Baraka:: owns his own shop "TARKAT VEHICES ENGINEERING", he's repairing cars, bikes, anything on wheels. Has a happy, simple life with his wife and children.

Chameleon:: Khameleon's twin brother. Hockey is his hobby and job, he doesn't really get along with his teammates but is loyal and reliable during games.

Darrius:: a part of the hockey team. Rain is his childhood friend who was bullying his brother(now sister) whenever hanging out.

Quan Chi:: human trafficker, works in business with Shang. Single dad (did he sell off his wife🤔), father of Ashrah and Sareena, he didn't raise them, he sent them to foster care.

Raiden:: a Sun Do University student. Helps out at Syzoth's pet shop.

Rain:: JC's neighbour. Lilly's half-brother (they have parents in a polyamory relationship, one mom, two fathers). He works at the bigger hospital in the city.

Reiko:: Hockey player. Was adopted by Shao before he was ten years old. And is traveling when having a match in other countries.

Reptile:: pet shop owner, has a big selection of reptiles.

Sareena:: Ashrah's little sister. Quan Chi's daughter. A freelance fashion designer for Nitara.

Scorpion:: second bouncer at Madam Bo's. He's the only brother who knows of Diya's workplace and is backing her up when necessarily. Does self defence classes with Bi-han on the weekends though.

Shao:: used to be a weight-lifter. Now is a welder at Baraka's shop.

Shang Tsung:: pharmacist. Drug dealer

Shujinko:: Madam Bo's ex-lover. Works as a doctor.

Sindel:: a principal of Sun Do University.

Smoke:: works at Kenshi's tattoo shop. Anime geek and gamer. Yearly goes to comic cons for sure!

Stryker:: works at Kano's gun shop.

Sub-zero:: ice-cream shop owner. Also does self defence classes 3 times a week when his schedule allows it.

Tanya:: works as an engineer for Baraka. Met her girlfriend there UwU

If superheroes are your thing and you want queer reading stuff, have you considered reading Dreadnought and Sovereign by April Daniels?

If you don't mind Netflix stuff, have you considered watching some hidden (and not so hidden) gems like Dark, the Girl in the Mirror, or Warrior Nun? Heck, Arcane, too.

If you don't like Netflix stuff, Our Flag Means Death and The Last of Us are right there; Amazon Prime has a fantastic Sci-Fi show called The Expanse that's worth a watch, and the Legend of Vox Machina just got a new season I believe, and The Wilds is pretty intriguing.

And these are just me, personally, off the top of my head. That doesn't even touch the danmei side of things. I don't even consider myself much of an avid watcher of shows, but there's a plethora of things available.

"Disney owns everything" is such a lazy excuse. You can just admit that you have a comfort zone.

The Extraordinaries by TJ Klune also comes to mind for superhero books. You First by JC Lillis is another one, though I haven't read it yet so can't personally vouch for it.

Other non-Disney properties I've personally enjoyed (not necessarily superheroes) lately: Severance (Apple TV), Shadow and Bone (Netflix), Smiley (Netflix), Young Royals (Netflix), 911 Lone Star (Fox), Derry Girls (Netflix). That's also just off the top of my head, I know I'm missing plenty of stuff. Note that Smiley, Young Royals, and Derry Girls are all non-American productions—don't discount foreign television!

Hell, you don't have to stick to new stuff. We have what, seventy years of television for the viewing? Get into Star Trek! Deep Space Nine is still my favorite show ever. Or how about Babylon 5? All the Stargate shows?

If really you just want to watch Disney properties, that's fine. You don't have to pretend that you don't have a choice. I love the MCU. I love Disney (I literally just renewed my annual pass to Disney World). I choose to spend my time and money on those things because I enjoy them, not because there's no other way to entertain myself.

How to Repair A Mechanical Heart by J.C. Lillis

This book was such a cataclysmic experience for me-it was like two of my favorite worlds combined and then combusted and blew apart. “How to Repair A Mechanical Heart” is a short and sweet YA novel from author J.C. Lillis who apparently has written other novels although I haven’t heard from her before.

I could tell that this was one of those novels where the author took the whole ploy of “write what you know” to the extreme and while sometimes it came across as cheeky and charming other times it just came across as indulgent and ridiculous.

But let’s jump in.

The novel features primarily our main character Brandon who is going through a repressed-gay-awakening and suffering though crushing amouts of Catholic guilt (same bro, same), crippling self-doubt, and regular bouts of self-loathing and criticism from said Jesus-filled upbringing.

Despite all this, surprisingly, Lillis manages to keep a pretty upbeat, light, and humorous tone, which to some extent is appreciated when discussing all these particularly heavy topics, but also shaves off the gravity of the situations the characters are facing and the depth of the characters themselves.

Brandon finds himself on a six week road trip around the US with his best friend Bec and his would-be-crush Abel as they travel the continental midwest for Castaway Planet conventions, the made up fandom that both Abel and Brandon are obsessed with.

The book features at length discussion on fandom culture, including but not limited to merch, action figures, fan vlogs, fangirls, twitter beefs, and fanfiction. Holy Hell, the fanfiction. About ⅓ of this book was about fanfiction and fanfiction culture and norms.

Now, I’d like to intercede here to say that I. LOVE. FANFICTION. Honestly, it gives me life. I write it, I read it, I adore it. I have loved fanfiction since I was twelve years old and to this day there are still fanfictions that are dearer and nearer to my heart than actual novels.

That being said, I didn’t really enjoy it here in the novel? I thought I would like it, but Lillis makes fandom and fanfiction culture simplified and almost petty and I didn’t always groove with her portrayal of it. Now, this might very well be her own personal experience with her own fandoms, but it’s not mine and it rubbed me the wrong way even if I can recognize that.

The clash between the fanfiction world and the real world in the novel often collided so much that the line was blurred between what I was reading really being a novel or if it was a glorified fanfiction. Or both. Or consequently neither.

And while the love story between Abel and Brandon is cute, it’s just...not anything else? It’s cute and Abel is witty, but them as characters and their story as a whole is highly forgettable.

There wasn’t much about this book, other than the blatant cross-over of the fanfiction trope, that was stunning or memorable to me. And Bec, Jesus (oh, no Father Mike must be condemning me!), the super OC, super bland, could-be-the-poster-girl for Corn Flakes, was about the most useless character I’ve ever seen. I think Lillis used her just to have someone be able to film Abel and Brandon because she had very little to offer in terms of character, personality, or plot.

This is one of those books, that while enjoyable in the moment, fades with pleasure as time goes on, like chewing on a piece of Juicy Fruit, it’s sweet and satisfying for a hot second and then turns bland and boring and you spit it out. And while that may seem harsh for “How to Repair A Mechanical Heart” it’s unfortunately true.

I did like the double entendre that the fanfiction Brandon was reading and then consequently finished was also called by the same name-how clever!-again, it just shows the distortion between whether Lillis was writing fanfiction about OC characters that nobody cared about, or about a novel that didn’t quite get the depth or maturity it needed to flourish.

Recommendation: If you are absolutely starving for some LGBTQ+ fiction and have scrounged up dry then I suppose you can read this. Or if you really get a kick out of seeing your secret fanfiction world come to life in another fictional world than this will really get your socks off. But in general, not the greatest love story, deepest characters, or best writing that I’ve seen, although some of her metaphors were quite funny and well put.

Score: 6/10
