Snom review! :3 (and frosmoth too ig)
Tumblr media
Snom basically became a hit as soon as it came out, and that's no big shock. Based off a jewel caterpillar, Snom replaces the usual gelatinous covering with icicles and some matching ice-typing, which is a nice twist on the original organism.
Tumblr media
As an added bonus, the fact that icicles are made of water means that its spikes are semi-transparent, and you can see its body through them. Not only does this match the actual caterpillar, but it also just makes for a cool effect.
Outside of that, the design is super simple. The compact, fruit-gummy-esq body is super cute, and I love that it just has a tiny dot eye located far back on its head. The stylized mandibles are also fun.
Tumblr media
This line is one of the ones that skip the middle stage in favor of jumping straight to the moth. I don't have any problems with Pokemon doing this (they're fantasy creatures, they don't need to match real life all the time), and this line does feel good as a two-stager.
That aside, I do find Frosmoth fairly forgettable. It's not really a bad design or anything; it's just that we've gotten tons of moth Pokemon over the years, and there's not much going on conceptually with Frosmoth to really make it stick out (compared to Snom, who's status as a jewel caterpillar instantly makes it look pretty different compared to the other caterpillar 'mons out there).
Visually, I do like how chunky its body is. It's more akin to a silk moth than an actual jewel moth caterpillar (which tend to be very fluffy but with smaller abdomens), but it is something very moth-like. It also has little "paws" hidden against its body, which I wish we saw more often because they're very cute.
The shape of the antennae are also very pretty, as are the snowflake-like patterns. And you can't tell it here, but the gray areas of its design are actually semi-transparent, which is a nice callback to Snom:
Tumblr media
But there's just no singular element that really stands out to make it memorable; Volcarona, for example, has six wings. I don't know what its thing might've been (maybe it could've retained some spikes somewhere in the design), but it does feel like it's missing something. regardless, its still a pleasant design from a visual standpoint.
Tumblr media
Anyway, overall, Snom is adorable and has a fun concept and design. Frosmoth is a bit more generic, but still pretty, and both designs are nice and simple.

You mentioned volcarona in the tags of that one post. If Im remembering correctly, Volcarona may be loosely based on the Atlas Moth
Tumblr media
The largest moth in terms of wingspan. I love bug pokemon, nearly every single one is based on some sort of real world equivalent (caterpie being a spicebush caterpillar, heracross being a japanese rhinoceros beetle, snow being a jewel caterpillar etc etc)
-
yep! i actually went directly to check what volcarona was based on right after i rbed that post lol. i luv when pokemon draw insp from animals real or mythological <3

May I interest you in this selection of crawlies I’ve found lately?
In order we have an Australian Jewel Bug, the larval stage of a most likely Common Christmas Beetle, the caterpillar of an Orange Grass Dart and finally an Anthela Acuta caterpillar I’m currently raising and observing for science as this species is little documented! I’ve already determined some new food sources and noted previously in observed behaviour. It’s currently in its cocoon so I’m hoping to see a moth sometime soon.
what a lovely hemisphere to be in now

Jewel caterpillars, which form into the zygaenoid moths called Dalceridae that have 80 known species are toxic; at least in moth form, their hairy bodies contain toxins. It is a common trait in caterpillars particularly that have hair, when hair is seen in caterpillar, it is most generally toxic. However, in this case; it is the vice versa. Moths that have hair aren't usually particularly toxic, although there are other moth species with hair that are; most generally though it is uncommon to see moths with hair and a species with such for example is the monarch moth. ──────────────────────────────────────────── ⇾ Follow my page for more epic, silly and boomblu content; share so I can grow if you wish, and come visit my other socials at my Linktree [Just click the word Linktree, it's hyperlinked :)]. ⇽ Check out the rest of my posts too!!! More more more fruitbugs. Do you think i was joking with the post-depression creativity burst?
Stink Currant- but he prefers to be called Teo, bc no one likes being called 'stink'. He's a Shark Moth. He's the annoying beach dude that thinks of everything as a competition- literally everything. If he sees someone tanning for example, he'll try to 'do it better' just to show he can. He also pretends to be a shark and bites people underwater. He's banned from most beaches.
Brown Turkey Fig, he's a Western conifer seed bug. A strange, alien like creature who unintentionally scares people with his big red, reflective eyes.
Jack-o-Lantern Pumpkin, he's a Pumpkin Patch Tarantula, and brother of 'regular' Pumpkin. While the latter represents different types of enjoyment of halloween (childish, teenage and adult), Jack-o-Lantern represents 'sexy' halloween. He owns many, many skimpy costumes that he wears during his work hours as a model. He only advertizes for halloween related things, usually candy.
Citron Watermelon, he's a Wooly Aphid. Despite his mummy-like appearance, Citron is not dead. He just gathered bandages to form his 'outfit'. No one knows that though, so people think he's a undead pharaoh. The fact that he does his best to scare away people from his 'residence' in a unused palace.
White Currant, he's a Lymantriine Moth. You'll probably recognize his insp if you've known me for a while, but when canon bad and miss opportunities: i gotta (make an oc). He was once a happy, eager and adventurous caterpillar who would often get into trouble. However one day, said trouble caught up to him and cursed him, making him unable to express any emotion. Since then he grew up to be a cult leader, hoping to know the occult enough to lift his curse. He does bad things because he feels he has to, to 'be freed'.
Picholine Olive, he's a Common Green Lacewing. He lives in the Medit level, specifically inland in the various orchards. He acts as a volunteer to pick the fruits for the orchards' owner(s)- but he also happens to secretly drive away animals and make plants grow. He has the ability to make plants flourish and control them if he wants to. And he can drive away animals- especially bugs, simply because he's a Lacewing (they're pest control).
Cardinal Grape, he's a Ostearius melanopygius spider. He has 'wings' but he's a spider. He's very often seen with Picholine Olive and they work together- Cardinal is aware of his friend's plant controlling powers and keeps it secret. He also works as pest control, being a spider- but he's very nice and always willing to listen to others. Though he has a bit of an ego, despite not having any abilities.
Tangerine, he's a Buthus Occitanus (Common Yellow Scorpion). A man with a solar disposition, but in a overwhelming, blinding way- literally (he glows and can burn to the touch) and figuratively (he's too much to handle). He has a big ego and thinks the world revolves around him. No one got close enough to him to figure out if he changes around friends...
Ambika Mango, he's a Jewel Beetle. i discovered colour bass recently so character about it! He's 'regular' Mango's brother and also makes music, but Ambika does so in his room- but he wants to do concerts one day. He's eager to share his music and show colour bass to new people, and hopefully make them dance to it one day.
Simka again but mummy bf outfit!
Vanilla X Tahitensis, he's a Sand Flea (which is a crustacean if you didnt know. i didnt until a few years ago). He prefers to be called Vanihi for short. A pleasant individual who's most often seen on the beach, or inland tending to tropical flowers. He's extraverted and loves meeting new people, but be gentle with him, he can be sensitive. If he gets angry, he'll turn beet red and jump away like a real sand flea would. (Note that while his skin tone is white, he isn't, that's just bc he's a sand flea and i fear that if i make his skin darker he'll look like someone else's oc)
Bubblegum Toka Plum, he's a Pink Ladybeetle Spider (another one, not related to Rio Star Grapefruit). He represents Bubblegum pop! He makes music and is a pop star, albeit a small one because his genre is new and not for everyone. He's always happy to interact with fans and considers them his friends.
Victoria Comet Plum, he's a Coccinella undecimpunctata (Ladybug). Part of the universal monster group, except victoria isn't a monster (by fruitbug standards. Still has a big monstrous bug true form like most do). Instead he was a once normal opera singer (Mezzo soprano), but his building caught fire and disfigured him. Since, certain people call him a 'monster' for simply looking different. He still wants to be a singer, but most don't give him a chance. If only he had somebody to sing with that accepts him...
Pomegranate, he's a Achrioptera Manga (stickbug). A dancer who's always looking for his true love- without overstepping others' boundaries and/or personal space. He's a charmer, but in a considerate way and respects others' orientations- that being said he loves to dance with people that want to! He's never seen without his fans (which are actually his wings).
Pokeweed, he's a Black Widow. A poisonous 'femme' fatale who never lets go of his prey. He's no stranger to deception and false relationships. However he also happens to be lonely and likes people trusting him- he simply likes playing with people's feelings. If you were to want a real relationship with him, you'd have to ignore his jabs and show that you truly wish to be close to him.

Genderabsurd
[PT: Genderabsurd]
A gender that’s absurd in nature. This can be due to it being full of seeming contradictions (such as specific vagueness, strange familiarity, different similarity, etc), a connection to absurdist art and the absurd, or the gender itself feeling simply absurd. This gender maybe experience some fluidity or fluctuation, but is never stable in a binary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fluffmothgender
[PT: Fluffmothgender]
A gender related to fluffy moths.
This can be due to the gender itself feeling like a fluffy moth, due to it being scary at first glance yet softer and cuter when looked at closer, or simply related to the aesthetics of fluffy moths!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dalceridaeic
[PT: Dalceridaeic]
A gender related to Dalceridae, also know as the jewel caterpillar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bogghowitchic
[PT: Bogghowitchic]
A gender related to the idea of a ghost of a witch, barefoot, in a flowy white dress or skirt, seen within the water of a bog or swamp.
A gender related to ghosts, witches (both supernatural and real), swamps and bogs, muddy water, nature, dirtied or ruined (stereotypically feminine) white clothing, bare feet in mud, a human, divine or otherwise spiritual connection to the earth, and other such related ideas/aesthetics.
This gender may be xenic and connected to femininity (though the gender itself may not be feminine in nature), though not necessarily.

What are your thoughts on bugs and creepy-crawlies? Do you like them because they are little creachers? Are there any you’re scared of?
i love little weird bugs... actually fun fact i have while it's at the top of my mind- there's a specific bug that Arval's design might be based off of called a jeweled caterpillar!!
Tumblr media
i want someone to make a gummy that looks like it. BUT ALSO!!! IT TURNS INTO A MOTH THAT MIGHT INSPIRE EPI'S DESIGN
Tumblr media
at least the colors and all. it looks fluffy and i want to pet it
i don't really have a fear of bugs themselves but i have a fear of a dangerous bug biting or stinging me akjhbfdhjdg... i don't really like wasps
but like. how bugs look is fascinating to me!! and there's so much variation too.... how many legs or eyes or how big they get or the colors they have and if they can fly or not and how they survive!!
bugs are fascinating little critters

More yucky bugs! This time they are, in order from left to right: Some type of mud dauber wasp, cat-faced orb weaver/jewel spider (Araneus gemmoides), poplar borer (Saperda calcarata. It’s a longhorn beetle!), one-eyed sphinx moth (Smerinthus cerisyi), and I am not 100% confident on the caterpillar but I think it’s a cabbage butterfly (Pieris rapae) that hitched a ride on my shirt on my way home from work. It’s neat to see up close the difference between a caterpillar’s true legs (the first three pairs) and its prolegs!

Thoughts on Wurmple?
Just Wurmple?
Tumblr media
Wurmple is fairly straightforward--there's a bit of a gimmick with the entire line, but at this stage it's mostly a regular caterpillar--but for being a regular caterpillar, I rather like the design for what it is. It doesn't really resemble any kind of IRL caterpillar that I know of, though the back and the texture in the official art kind of makes me think of a jewel caterpillar. Ironically, we got a jewel caterpillar 'mon later on in the form of Snom, which also has a butt-face like Wurmple here. COINCIDENCE? Yeah, probably.
Anyway, the yellow/red/cream palette is nice, I like the stylized mouth (kind of like abstract mandibles), and the horns on the head and tail. Overall, I think I'd say that I prefer it to Caterpie; both are pretty straightforward caterpillars, but Wurmple is more charming, and doesn't look as much like an actual species (Caterpie looks a lot like a Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar to me).
Also, this is only partially related to Wurmple itself, but I don't really care for the random evolution method. The idea of a caterpillar that evolves into either a moth or butterfly is a fun idea and works just fine; but why make what it becomes effectively RNG based? It's not like it connects to anything, and it makes it harder for players to get the evolutions they want (RIP to everyone with a shiny Wurmple, myself included). It would've made far more sense to have it evolve into Silcoon/Beautifly during the day and Cascoon/Dustox during the night, seeing as butterflies are day-flying and moths are mostly nocturnal (not all, but most).
Anyway, the point is that Wurmple is fairly plain and isn't bring that much new to the table, but the design itself is perfectly fine and I don't have much to nitpick about it, either. I would say it's my favorite caterpillar 'mon, but Sewaddle exists. Sorry, Wurmple, I still like you.
Also, this has nothing to do with anything, but this anime screencap is amazing and I want everyone to take a moment to appreciate it.
