Gaming with chronic pain
I love videogames. i am not, however, incredibly good at many videogames due to slow reaction times and my disabilities.
here are some things that accessible (for me) games have, as well as tips to make some games more accessible:
captions. for hearing spoken cues as well as noises and directions. i remember instructions better if i see rather than hear them
mod. those. games. even "cozy" games like Stardew valley have a bunch of controls and modding reduces the amount of clicking (thanks, automate mods), and remembering what you need to do in the game - reducing the cognitive load required. Modded stardew on my laptop is playable in a flare up, which unmodded stardew on my switch just wasn't at all.
interested about if you can play a popular game? Can I Play That has you covered.
Story/easy modes! options to reduce damage, immunity and less penalties for dying are great for both focusing on the story, and just not being able to keep up with controls.
ability to change button mapping, press fewer buttons, simplify controls. the ability to turn off long press commands, and reduce the amount of time you need to hold multiple buttons is *great* (side note: yes, i am mad about the amount of buttons and memory required for Zelda Tears of the kingdom. what about it)
beloved faves (steam links):
-hades. the first hack and slash i can actually play and an excellent low cognitive ability distraction to pain flareups
-animal crossing. goes without saying
-cell to singularity. a free clicker game with an amazing classical soundtrack that is excellent when more than one control is not happening.
-the outer worlds. good plot driven story with a sandbox feel but clear tasks and good accessibility menu.
-sims 4. when i'm in a lot of pain the time management of sims is too much for me, but the endless hours i can waste on character creation are *awesome* and its now free!
