My review of episode 9x07
It’s not easy to put into words all the thoughts in my mind and the feelings in my heart, most of all I think my poor words can’t express and honor the sheer perfection of the dream sequence set in the 1940s, a true masterpiece on every level: the performance of every single actor, the writing, the amazing soundtrack, the sets, the costumes… every single detail… I truly was in awe the whole time. I admire the talent of everyone who worked to bring this to us more than I can say.
What I loved the most about this long, perfectly conceived and delivered dream sequence was what it told us about Steve McGarrett. I’ve learned it’s not possible for me to say that I couldn’t love this character more than I already do, I’ve learned I grow to love him more episode by episode and this episode raised the bar so much. I’ll try to explain why.
Steve’s subconscious could have chosen any day, but he chose December 6th 1941, the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the day his namesake grandfather lost his life… he absorbed Milton’s words about Steve McGarrett senior dreaming about being a detective, about the way December 7th 1941 changed everything… how things might have been if Steve hadn’t lost his life that day? And Steve dreamed about that, he kept his grandfather safe in his dream, far from the attack, far from death, still able to achieve his dream, still able to be a father to John McGarrett… and that’s the first image he sees when he starts to dream: a picture of his grandfather next to his grandmother, pregnant with John… in his dream, his grandfather gets to be a detective and a father, John gets to grow with his father. Just like in his drug induced hallucinations, in the 100th episode, John gets to live. This is Steve McGarrett, the man who would do anything to make the people he loves happy. And if he can’t do that in his life… he does that in his dreams.
Another scene that shows so perfectly who Steve McGarrett is and is, in my opinion, one of the greatest scenes of the whole show, is the one where he puts Layla’s picture (I hope I got the name right) in front of Chang Apana’s picture… see, Steve’s life has been riddled with unanswered questions, mysteries, lies… he knows well too much the value of the truth, the value of closure… so this need he felt to give closure to Chang Apana and all those who cared about Layla – Milton, his grandfather…  – it was so much like Steve. There was Steve’s heart in this scene.
What about that ending scene in the restaurant? I can say I feel it’s not the end, I feel like this storyline is far from over. I may be wrong, I don’t know, but it’s how I feel. I think it’s not the right moment, they rushed things, they’re not ready, there’s too much on their plate, too muck at stake… but there was this scene in Steve’s dream, the one where Steve senior and Milton ducked behind a car to protect themselves from the blast that reminded me (I don’t know if it was just a case, but it did) the scene in 7x18 where Steve told Danny for the first time that he wanted to be somehow part of the restaurant, and I can’t help thinking that the restaurant looks just like the one in Danny’s dream, the one where Grace and Will have their wedding reception, the one Steve and Danny will work while Captain Tani Rey and Junior Reigns run Five-0 as work and life partners…
I think there’s a lot of truth in those dreams and I think that they’ll realize how right Steve was when he told Danny “I believe in you, I believe in us and that’s all that matters”. At this point in the future, they’ll realize it’s really the only thing that matters. Right now, I think they panicked… sometimes it happens, even with things that can make you happy. And I think that everyone who loves McDanno like I do can see the parallel with their relationship.
While hoping so much more for the future and not denying I was taken aback by this turn of things, I think it was the right choice… there were too many hurdles, too many fights, and that means it wasn’t the right moment… maybe the right moment will come, I hope that so much… right now I’m happy with the way this change happened, I’m happy because of Danny’s “if you’re out, I’m out”… that is also a “if you’re in, I’m in”.
That’s the way they do things: together. As long as they’re together, as long as they need to be together and can’t even conceive the idea of not being together, I’m happy. I’ll just be here, watching their relationship evolve, because that’s what they’ll do, that’s for sure: they’ll move forward, and they’ll do it together.
Thinking about this episode being the 200th one makes me feel proud, excited, happy, grateful… it even moves me, am I being silly? Since 2010 it holds such a special place in my heart and that feeling grows stronger season by season, episode by episode.
There are TV shows and then there’s Hawaii Five-0. Its heart and soul makes it different from every other show, unique, magic.
Thank you to the writers, the actors, everybody who works to give us this. Thank you so much and my very best wishes for the future, because I’m sure much more success and wonders will come: ad maiora semper, to greater things, always.

Published: September 20, 2019
LAS VEGAS — Three world title bouts and a highly anticipated light heavyweight unification fight are on the docket for Top Rank’s fall schedule, which will be unveiled TODAY at 12 p.m. PT at a special kickoff press conference at the MGM Grand’s KA Theatre. The press conference will feature all eight fighters, and it will be streamed live on @ESPN through the ESPN App, available to all viewers unauthenticated. The fall schedule will kick off October 18 with the previously announced light heavyweight unification bout between IBF champion Artur Beterbiev and WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia (ESPN and ESPN Deportes, 10 p.m. ET). The entire undercard will stream on ESPN+ starting at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. “This is a tremendous lineup of fights that Top Rank is bringing to ESPN and ESPN+ in the fall,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “You have young superstars and established champions in the toughest fights of their careers. It doesn’t get better than that. When it’s all said and done, new superstars are going to emerge.” October 26: Stevenson and Gonzalez to Battle for Featherweight World Title Shakur Stevenson is only 22 years old and 12 fights into his pro career. For his first world title shot, he’ll return to the sight of many of his greatest amateur accomplishments. Stevenson will face Joet Gonzalez for the vacant WBO featherweight title Saturday, October 26 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada. Stevenson and Gonzalez are the WBO’s top two contenders for the belt vacated by Oscar Valdez, who is now campaigning at 130 pounds. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Let’s Get It On Promotions and Golden Boy, Stevenson-Gonzalez and a co-feature will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+, the leading multi-sport streaming service, beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. The entire undercard will stream on ESPN+ starting at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. "I have been working for this moment my entire life, and no one is going to stop me from becoming a world champion,” Stevenson said. “I had some of my biggest amateur moments in Reno, and I can’t wait to win my first world title there. This is my time to show the world that I am the best young fighter in boxing. The Shakur Stevenson era will officially begin on October 26.” “It’s about time I got my world title shot,” Gonzalez said. “I’ve been asking for this opportunity for a long time. Thanks to my promoter and manager, it is finally here. Shakur Stevenson has done a lot of talking. But I’ll do my talking in the ring with my fists on October 26.” Stevenson (12-0, 7 KOs), the fighting pride of Newark, New Jersey, turned pro in April 2017 following a standout amateur career that included a 2016 Olympic silver medal for the United States. He is familiar with Reno, having won four national titles in “The Biggest Little City in the World” from 2013-2015, including his triumph at the Olympic Trials. Stevenson returned to Reno as a pro, shutting out Juan Tapia over eight rounds in February 2018 to improve to 5-0. He has fought three times thus far in 2019, including a career-best performance April 20 against former world title challenger Christopher Diaz on the Terence Crawford-Amir Khan pay-per-view undercard. He followed up the unanimous decision over Diaz with a triumphant return to Newark, where more than 5,000 fans packed the Prudential Center for his third-round stoppage over Alberto Guevara. Gonzalez (23-0, 14 KOs) is a seven-year pro who has the edge in experience, and at 25 years old, is three years older than Stevenson. Like Stevenson, he had a storied amateur career, nearly qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics and winning a U.S. Junior Olympics title. Gonzalez has won three consecutive bouts by knockout since a split decision victory over former world title challenger Rafael Rivera. He last fought July 13 in Carson, California, capturing the WBO Global and WBA Continental America featherweight titles with a sixth-round stoppage over Manuel Avila. Immediately following the Avila bout, he expressed interest in fighting in Stevenson, and the two have since been engaged in a social media back-and-forth. The talking will stop — and the fight will start — on October 26. November 2: Miguel Berchelt Set to Defend Super Featherweight World Title Versus Jason Sosa WBC super featherweight world champion Miguel Berchelt will defend his world title for the sixth time against former world champion Jason Sosa in a can’t-miss battle Saturday, November 2 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Berchelt, who has won four in a row by stoppage, is the division’s longest-reigning world champion and is ranked No. 1 by both ESPN.com and Ring Magazine. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Zanfer Promotions and Peltz Boxing, Berchelt-Sosa and a world title co-feature will air live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT. The undercard will stream on ESPN+ starting at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT “On November 2, there will be another classic war between a Mexican and a Puerto Rican warrior,” Berchelt said. “I will prove once again that I am the best and most spectacular super featherweight in the world. This title ain’t going anywhere.” “I can’t express how happy and grateful I am to Top Rank and Russell Peltz for once again working together to give me another shot at becoming world champion,” Sosa said. “I am training harder than ever. I want this so bad, and I am not going to let anything stop what God has planned for me. We are incredibly focused knowing the importance of this fight. Berchelt is a strong opponent, and we are not taking his talents lightly. We both throw a lot of punches so expect an action-packed fight that will be the next chapter in the Mexico versus Puerto Rico rivalry. It’s a rivalry that’s been ongoing for years, and I plan on making my island very proud. On November 2, I plan on becoming a two-time world champion.” Berchelt (36-1, 32 KOs) has reigned as WBC super featherweight king since January 28, 2017, the evening he dethroned Francisco Vargas via 11th-round knockout in a Fight of the Year contender. He has maintained his reputation as an all-action star, besting Miguel Roman and Takashi Miura in dominant title defenses. He last fought May 11 in Tucson, Arizona, battering Vargas in their rematch until Vargas retired on his stool following the sixth round. A native of Cancun, Mexico, Berchelt has won 15 consecutive bouts and hopes a win over Sosa will move him closer to a world title unification bout. Sosa (23-3-4, 16 KOs), from Camden, New Jersey, is in the midst of a career revitalization following a two-bout skid in 2017. Sosa has reeled off three consecutive wins since a controversial decision loss to Yuriorkis Gamboa in November 2017, and he is now ranked in the top 10 by two of the major sanctioning organizations. He last fought August 10 in Philadelphia, knocking out Lydell Rhodes in seven rounds to earn his shot at the title. November 9: Jamel Herring Set for Ballpark Title Defense Versus Lamont Roach Jr. in Fresno Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring, the U.S. Marine veteran who upset Masayuki Ito in on Memorial Day weekend to win the WBO junior lightweight title, is set to honor his comrades by returning on Veterans Day weekend. Herring will make his first title defense against the undefeated Lamont Roach Jr. on Saturday, November 9 at Chukchansi Park in Fresno, home of the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies. This is a return engagement for Herring, who fought at Fresno’s Save Mart Center last September and had more than 1,000 active, retired and aspiring service members in the crowd cheering him on. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Golden Boy, Herring-Roach and a co-feature will stream live beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT on ESPN+. The undercard will stream on ESPN+ starting at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. “Our camps have gone back and forth, and I’m just ready to get to work,” Herring said. “I have a great team, and Terence Crawford will also be in camp to make sure I’m at my best. Overall, the night means much more than trash-talking, since it’s the weekend of both Veterans Day and the Marine Corps birthday. “I’m glad to be back in Fresno. I had a huge crowd supporting me last time I fought in the area. I know a victory here will lead to bigger and better things.” “I know Jamel very well and he knows me,” Roach Jr. said. “I’m super excited, and I’ve been waiting for this moment my entire life. This victory will be only the beginning of my legacy. I’m here for a reason, and I can’t wait to show the world why! I will be the WBO junior lightweight world champion on November 9.” Herring (20-2, 10 KOs) served two tours of duty with the Marines in Iraq and captained the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team. His pro career stalled with a 1-2 skid from 2016-2017, but after signing with Top Rank and moving down to 130 pounds, he won three straight fights to earn the title shot against Ito. His September 2018 fight against John Vincent Moralde was a particularly special occasion, as dozens of Marines lined the Save Mart Center walkway as Herring made his entrance. He shut out Moralde as the ESPN-televised co-feature, and now he returns to California’s Central Valley ready to put on a clinic under the lights. Roach (19-0-1, 7 KOs) is one of the best young fighters to emerge from the boxing hotbed of Washington, D.C. in recent years. His only hiccup as a pro — an April 2018 draw against Orlando Cruz in Cruz’s home country of Puerto Rico — was a minor speed bump in what has been an otherwise sterling run up the ranks. He is 3-0 since the Cruz fight, winning a pair of regional belts and putting forth his best performances on high-profile cards. He last fought May 4 on the Canelo Alvarez-Danny Jacobs undercard in Las Vegas, scoring a 10-round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Jonathan Oquendo. Roach is trained by his father, Lamont Roach Sr., who has been the head man in his corner for his past five bouts.

All men are created equal. Then some become Marines.
Connor was born to protect and serve - ask anyone, they'll tell you the same. And although Connor's proud of all he's done, there's no greater achievement in his life than getting married to the love of his life and becoming a father; and, luckily for Connor, he's gotten to do it...twice, he'll proudly admit. It may have taken getting broken-down, bruised and beaten to get where he is today but that's what a good Marine does: he may get broken down, but he always gets built back up, one way or another.
Childhood was nothing more than a few good, friendly blows between two rowdy brothers, Connor and Jeff, the sons of a housewife (Michelle) and a hardworking, oil rig worker (John). Michelle adored her boys, despite the headaches they caused and had no problems separating the two from one another when their fighting got out of hand; but it was all in good fun. Boys will be boys, after all. When they were harassing one another, the two got along relatively well and school gave them a good, much needed outlet for all their energy, a god-send for Michelle. The two entered their teenage years without much fanfare, both of them taking a shot at football with success but after only a year, Connor called it quits and focused his attention on school instead, or, that was his intention, anyway.
Katelyn was a beautiful, bright young woman who had just moved to Houston and stood in front of the class, confidence radiating like sunshine, detailing her life as though it were a movie. Connor was smitten from the first words that came from her perfect lips but Katelyn wasn't too sure about yet, blocking him every which way he tried to come at her until she finally yielded three years later during their junior year of high school and accepted his offer of a first date; it would be the beginning of something beautiful but beauty, too often, is followed by tragedy. It would be a gorgeous spring day in his fourth period class when Connor would be pulled out, sat beside his brother in the principal's office and dealt the horrific blow: their mother and father were hit by a semi-truck and neither of them survived. The pain was unbearable but Katelyn stuck by Connor's side through the angst he felt and Jeff pushed for the two to live off their parents' savings until Connor turned eighteen the following year. Life was difficult, it was different, but it continued on none the less.
High school and college were a breeze for Connor and Katelyn worked tirelessly as an assistant to a prominent lawyer in town, none the wiser that Connor was planning something big. It would be a romantic dinner, followed by a date beneath the stars when Connor popped the question and the two tied the knot three months later, just before they got their biggest, and final wedding gift: Katelyn was pregnant, much to Connor's excitement. The couple's joy quickly turned to Katelyn's frustration when Connor admitted that he had signed up for the Marine Corps and, should he be accepted, he would most likely be away at training or deployed during their child's birth.
But even with Katelyn's mounting frustration, she could see Connor's determination and supported his decision, even as his daughter Nicole was born, as Connor had predicted, during his deployment. But, if anything, the new girl in his life made him all the more dedicated to do something great with his life and after his service in the Marine Corps had been complete, Connor shifted his focus from the military to public safety. The timing couldn't had been any more perfect as the city of San Antonio put out a call for new, dedicated officers to join the force so, just as he did as a Marine, Connor was called and he, without hesitation, answered. Working as an officer allowed him to help his brother get on his feet and support his own, small family but the long hours and stressful nights caught up with the one happy couple sooner than they had hoped; only a year and a half after his return from the Marines, the two filed for an amicable divorce. Their custody agreement was painless and mutual for the sake of their daughter Nicole and, when the papers hit the table, neither wasted any time in signing them, unaware that an accident would force the two back into each other's lives years later.
Six years had passed since Connor joined the police force and despite his divorce, he was shining in his department, looking forward to a long career climbing the ranks of the police department until a call came. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary: a domestic dispute between a young, victimized mother and her abusive boyfriend that had gotten physical and he had refused to let her leave. Connor responded, as he always did, and ushered the woman and her young child to his squad car per her request, assuring the woman that they could be sheltered for the night and would be able to return the next morning, police by her side, to gather her things. Connor radioed his dispatcher to let them know the situation when he felt a piercing pain in his back followed by total numbness in his legs that dropped him to his stomach. With radio still in hand, Connor was able to send out a distress signal - "Officer down, requesting back-up". He watched as the boyfriend rushed up to a car that he had never seen before, speeding away recklessly down the street shortly before officer closed in on the scene and Connor blacked out. His ex-wife would be clutching his hand, her hushed sobs bringing him to a sobering state of wakefulness as he puzzled out where he was: white walls, the smell of rubbing alcohol, the repetitive beep of the machines. It would be her that would ultimately break the news that the doctors had been waiting to tell him: he had sustained a T-11 spinal cord injury and, as a result, had been paralyzed from the waist down. The man who had shot him had been arrested and was now awaiting trial for the attempted murder of a police officer after fleeing the scene but even as the news sank in, Connor wasn't sure how to process it all. A doctor appeared moments later, noting that with proper physical therapy and training, Connor would be able to use a wheelchair but even with leg braces, his ability to walk again was likely nothing more than a dream. Faced with no other options, Connor accepted the therapy without a second thought and put on a brave face for both himself and his ex-wife. It would take almost fourteen months for Connor to complete his rehabilitation and return to work as an officer - but, as expected, things were never quite the same. He tried to find passion in work at the station for the next several months but, due to both boredom and pride, he had no choice but to leave the department.
Now, the accident is nothing more than a memory and Connor has adjusted well to his new life in Austin, despite his wheelchair. His weekends are spent traveling the U.S on his modified motorcycle while his days are spent catching up with his old police buddies when he's in town, enjoying the life he's lucky to have. Now, all he needs is a new lady in his life to sweep off her feet and one such lady may look little and petite but she is a beast (in a tiny package).
But the miniature butcher and mother of one has troubles of her own, problems that Connor is about to realize become his baggage too, and he's not talking about his new daughter. An ex-boyfriend has re-appeared in April's life and he's not willing to let her slip between his fingers without a fight, no matter what that means for him and everyone else around him. All his life, Connor has chosen to live by his one true motto, even if that means he must make the ultimate, heartbreaking sacrifice in the face of what's right: Semper Fidelis.

I’ve said elsewhere, when Peter Parker faces his creator, Stan, and finally says “I like myself” then his story is complete. He’s gone beyond his creator. He’s now his own creation. A lot of people think I threw Stan in there as a cheap gimmick, but the bigger, more cosmic issue is overlooked. Here’s a guy facing his creator (in essence his deity) and saying, ‘Guess what? I’m beyond what you created, with all my flaws and problems. I faced the challenge you set out for me and I’ve progressed beyond it. And I really like myself.’ When he can say that, then the hero’s journey has been told and the saga is complete. Who cares if he gets the girl or not?”

When the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon’s designs were initially released many people alternately dismissed or mocked them as bad. This was profoundly unfair. Putting aside how different aesthetics of designs appeal to different people, the designs were intended to be animation friendly and to really move. Which they did.
However at the same time those criticising people who shallowly insulted the Spec designs shouldn’t then be criticizing the 1994 cartoon designs. Again aesphetic appeal of designs are subjective.
Even if some of the choices were bad let’s remember that...it was the mid-1990s. It wasn’t like fashion was in a wonderful place back then. But even so I feel some people get way to hung up on the designs to bash the show.
Like Peter Parker was maybe too muscular and broadshouldered in season 1. Is it that big of a deal honestly?
He spent most of the show as Spider-Man in which his body shape was perfectly correct for the character, especially if you look at Romita Senior and Bagley renditions of the character at the time. In fact McFarlane, Larsen and even Bagley renditions of Peter Parker in the 1990s draw him as fairly musclebound when in his civilian guise.
Is that yellow cardigan ugly on Mary Jane. In my opinion yes it is but it really is the one and only thing wrong with her design. Everything else she wears including the boots is fine, the boots in fact are things that Mary jane has on and off worn throughout her history, including in her first appearance.
It’s just...a pretty shallow thing to say the show rides or dies on. Especially when you consider most of the other character’s looks are mostly just replicating the comics.
Really the show if you bother to put it in the context of it’s time is very strong where it really counts, that is to say the story and the characters.
For all the loud criticisms about ‘But the Moussy?’ or ‘Hobgoblin came first!’ or ‘Mary Jane wasn’t like she was in the comics!’ or ‘It wasn’t as good as Batman the Animated Series’ the show did sooooooooooooooo much right and many of those criticisms don’t hold up to scrutiny.
 Let’s do some analysis.
Was the show as good as Batman the Animated Series?
No but apart from the Simpsons and Gargoyles what American Animated series from around most of Spider-Man TAS’ airing actually was?
Not even the New Batman adventures or Superman the Animated Series hit anywhere close to BTAS’ quality.
Those shows were a perfect storm of quality and caught lightning in a bottle.
Saying a show is terrible for not reaching those heights is utterly unfair, it’s like saying a movie or a gangster movie is terrible because it’s dared not be as good as the Godfather. Or a fantasy movie is terrible for not being as good as Lord of the Rings.
 It’s stupid and ignorant.
You grade things based upon the NORMS of the time.
In the mid 1990s there were quite a few cartoons attempting to be more serious, trying to rise above cliché simplistic Saturday morning adventures and since that’s what virtually every cartoon for the previous three decades had been doing each show attempting to do that in context thus deserves major, major kudos.
And that’s what Spider-Man the Animated Series did too.
Does the censoring hurt it? Does it’s restricted budget (due to the pricier ventures of other shows, including BTAS) hurt it?
Sure, but it’s like classic Doctor Who. You judge it based upon the limitations placed upon it not merely on the surface level of the final product. I know that is not the common wisdom for tv/flm criticism...but frankly that just means that common wisdom for TV/film criticism is really, really narrow minded and should instead be reformed. Doing otherwise is like grading a kid with dyslexia harshly when he literally has factors beyond his control holding him back despite him doing his best.
So bearing that in mind no Spider-Man the Animated Series really isn’t a bad show at all, nor a bad Spider-Man show. Especially when you put it into context of the previous Spider-Man shows or even the ones since.
In terms of it’s characters and handling of supporting cast and subplots it’s absolutely not just clear cut obvious that Spec Spidey is superior.
Consider that the show was so well plotted that the grand finale in season 5was being seeded as early as seeded in season 3. That the show managed to hit the emotional truth of the Death of Gwen Stacy DESPITE not being able to kill anybody and then looped that back around into motivating the character for the grand finale and his ultimate emotional fulfilment. Consider the show is arguably the most soap opera-esque American animated series for children ever, with some episodes haveing love polygons let alone triangles. The latter being in fact something all too appropriate for Spider-Man.
Consider that whilst the show might have altered some characters in a detrimental way, others they made more interesting. Yet others they changed but the altered characters were not uninteresting characters unto themselves despite being different. The Felicia Hardy of this show is a very different beast to the Felicia of the comics, but she is also more reltable and has a more significant arc. She is also not an uninteresting love interest.
Look I do think it’s a shame that the alterations made to some characters were drastic and detrimental. But taking them in isolation, unlike the crappy USM show, again they weren’t unlikable characters unto themselves. Plus as the first legitimate attempt to properly adapt Spider-Man teething problems were bound to occur. USM being made so long after Spider-Man was a pop cultural icon doesn’t have that same excuse.
Hell for all people’s griping about Mary Jane in this show, honestly there isn’t much wrong with her as a character unto herself. She just isn’t Mary Jane from the comics, but still has elements of her nevertheless. Her backstory with her father is tweaked but not uninteresting. She can still be resourceful when needed. She could still be supportive and brave and all that. Just watch the Hydro Man episode to see her character in action.
And for all the griping about character changes...Spider-Man himself is basically perfect.
Whilst not as whining or neurotic as the comic books (and thereby less aggravating) frankly this version of Peter Parker is how Peter should be written. That is to say not word for word like an exaggerated 1960s Stan Lee comic book character nor as later renditions of the character were which flanderized some of those traits.
This Spider-Man could feel guilt but wasn’t at times seeming like he was mentally ill.
He was funny, confident, sometimes selfish, sometimes angry, but ultimately altruistic and heroic.
Yeah every so often like in the Dr Strange episode the writers goofed up, but on the whole Spider-Man in this show was the first time in any adaptation you got to see the character properly represented which is...well kind of the most important thing.
More poignantly this show did the spirit of Spider-Man correctly. Despite changes to the characters and lore, the sequence of events and so on this was the first time we got the ‘feel’ of the original Spider-Man comic books.
Spider-Man was a down to Earth regular guy albeit a smarter and more altruistic one, who dealt with regular life events alongside fantastical superhero stuff. His fortunes vacillated often in relation to his activates as Spider-Man.
He had a friends and family and acquaintances of people who could exist in real life, a ost of colourful adversaries with their own plot lines weaving in and out of Peter’s own.
There was a continuity to the show wherein the events of one episode could have an impact down the line, characters had arcs.
And the series ended with an adoring love letter to the character by highlighting what makes the character who he is. The last few episodes of the show Spider-Man meets a version of himself who’s lost everything and gone to the darkside and contrasts that to another version of himself where he had everything and appreciates the fact that he isn’t either of these people but rather himself. He then saves all of reality  and proceeds to tell his God, his creator, Stan Lee himself that he is his own man beyond what Stan intended for him and goes off into the sunset to be happy.
But I guess all of that is worthless because of Mary Jane’s cardigan...

I gained a whole new equilibrium. The agility of a spider. The strength too. And a spiders craving for dark corners and new heights.
Spider-Man the Animated Series Season 3 Episode 2 “Make a Wish”
Look whether you think it’s accurate to the character or not, I’ve always found this description of Spider-Man upon getting his powers to be I dunno...resonant.

Okay lets dismantle this one for the road. But it’ll take a few goes to do it properly
To begin with what a charming header image.
“He may have abandoned his alternate universe of the same description, but Miles Morales is, without a doubt, the ultimate Spider-Man.”
 SPOILERS!
There is more than a little doubt.
“In just a few short years, the webheaded wunderkind has stolen the shine from right underneath Peter Parker’s nose. ”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“His adventures hearken back to the high school heyday of the original wall crawler (soon to be returned to on the big screen in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”) while offering a completely new, modern and unique perspective of the teenage superhero.”
Why does this make him better?
Peter Parker grew in popularity under John Romita Senior when he had LEFT high school and was in college. Most adaptations which have the option of choosing tend to either begin with him as or quickly progressing him into a college student.
Spider-Man the Animated Series only briefly showed him in high school in a few flashbacks.
Spider-Man 2002 began with him in high school on the cusp of graduating and then advanced him into college by the half way point of the film.
 Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 depict him as a college student.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 depicts him as a college student.
The only major TV and film adaptations which have not had to do things for the sake of synergy which have actively chosen to make Peter a high school school are:
 -       The Spectacular Spider-Man Animated Series
-       The Amazing Spider-Man 2012
-       Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The Ultimate Spider-Man Tv series might also be counted but it was released the same year as the ASM movie meaning there was likely a desire for synergy there.
The Spectacular Spider-Man Animated Series was the first major adaptation which chose to make him a high school student when they didn’t have to and they did it because they were the first attempt to truly replicate the Ditko run and differentiate themselves from all previous adaptations.
The ASM movie was retelling Spider-Man’s origin and also desperately seeking out any uniqueness amidst the fact that they were covering the same ground again. So they had to make him a high schooler and keep him there.
Spider-Man: Homecoming similarly wishes to depict Spider-Man’s early days as it’s depicting the early days of the Marvel universe as a whole and it makes no sense for Spider-Man to have been publically active off screen for any length of time.
Furthermore another CBR article actually listed over a dozen reasons as to why the 1980s (a decade where Peter was never a high school student) was the best decade for Spider-Man ever.
http://www.cbr.com/1980s-greatest-spider-man-decade/
So what’s the big deal about Miles harkening back to the early days of Spider-Man?
Or should I say what would be the big deal because between his mother dying, SHIELD having anything like a presence in his series, Venom, Blackheart and frequent crossovers and events and big events which might potentially shape the Marvel universe, there is more than a few elements unsuitable in Miles’ adventures if he is in fact harkening back to the simple down to Earth days of the Ditko era where Spider-Man was just living his day to day life, trying to make ends meet and coping with regular life ups and down.
And...completely new and unique perspective of the teenage super hero?
 How so?
It can’t be in so far as he is the first teenage superhero ever. Well over two dozen characters preceded him.
It can’t be that he’s the first teen hero or hero in general to have spider powers or call themselves Spider-Man.
It can’t be that he is the first teen hero or hero in general to have spider powers in post millennial society because we’ve had Mayday Parker/Spider-Girl and Ultimate Spider-Man do that.
It can’t be that he is the first poc teen hero. There have been shittons preceding him and shittons more after him thus he hardly offers anything unique even if he was the first out the gate (but again he wasn’t....at all).
Well okay maybe Miles is ‘unique’ as a take on the teen superhero because he is the first teen hero who’s taking over the legacy of another hero...whoops no he isn’t. See every Robin ever.
Let’s tweak that. He is unique because he’s the first POC teen hero to take over the legacy of another hero...oh hello Cassie Cain what are you doing here over 10 years before Miles Morales was ever dreamed of.
More tweaking? Okay. He’s unique because he’s the first POC teen hero to take over the legacy of another DEAD white hero who’s superhero identity was based upon a creature usually thought of as an insect and who Steve Ditko had a hand in creating.... Miguel O’Hara and Jaime Reyes? Who are they?
AH! Could it be that he was the first poc teen hero who offers an African American perspective of regular life as a teen?
Oh no wait no he wasn’t. There is quite a lot of stuff in his life which takes him away from just being a normal teen and even if there wasn’t Virgil Hawkins got there first too (and did it better). Not only was he actually created and defined as a character by black creators but here is what John Semper Junior (himself a black writer, story editor, and producer, with work including ‘SPIDER-MAN THE ANIMATED SERIES’) had to say about the character:
“... I was one of the writers and story editors of the animated "Static Shock" TV show some years back (for seasons three and four), and I was nominated for an Emmy for my work on that show, so I have a warm place in my heart for this young super-hero character. In fact, I've always considered him the first black "Spider-Man," which made it very easy for me to segue from one show to the other....”
Yes, Miles sure is unique all right. Nobody like Miles has ever existed before in comic books ever.
“The creation of Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, since his debut in 2011’s “Ultimate Fallout” #4 Miles has gone on to utterly dominate “Spider-Man” across all media, with appearances in video games, the “Ultimate Spider-Man” animated series and a movie in the pipeline.”
Yeah dominate all media. Because as we all know he was utterly vital in all those Spider-Man video games that have come out since 2011. He was sure as heck the lead of every Spider-Man movie appearance since 2011. He was totally the main character in that crappy Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon.
He’s just so DOMINATING you guys!
“As well as doing the usual superheroics to a tee, Miles has opened the character up to a wider, more diverse audience in the process.”
Opened up what character to a wider more diverse audience? Spider-Man?
Surely most people on Earth knew Spider-Man long before 2011.
And doing superheroics to a tee?
I don’t think having spider sense, invisibility powers and a venom blast that if used in combination means every fight should last 2 minutes is doing superheroics to a tee.
Nor is just being handed your superhero costume or being fairly quickly accepted into prominent paramilitary/superhero organizations despite little experience.
“But why stop there? Here are 15 ways Miles Morales is a better Spidey than Peter Parker.”
Here are 15 ways CBR will make bullshit points for the sake of clickbait!

Writter who never worked on a Spider-man title, but you think it would be interessing to read his work on Peter Parker's life
Greg Weisman if he counts. He has only done one back up story in ASM.
Other than him...maybe John Semper Junior?
Possibly Charles Soule
Or you know...me?
TBH I am at a point now where between the terry Kavaaghs and Dan Slotts of this world along with basically everyone who worked on BND I honestly do not think Spider-Man should be handed over to anyone who hasn’t been road tested with the character properly.
Like Zdarsky might be good but I feel apprehensive because of how its become clear over the last 10+ years how many writers truly do not understand the chaacter. I want anyone being handed a regular solo Spider-Man title to have done like at least a one shot solo Spider-Man story to see how they handle him and then maybe get a title. Like Slott got to be part of BND off the back of his Spidey/Torch mini, which was good but not at all the kind of thing ASM needs to be.

For more information: www.ohpark.com. “I am excited to return to the United States to defend my world title,” Ito said. “I will be at my best, as I know Herring is a tough and experienced fighter. While I ultimately want to unify the 130-pound division, Herring is the task at hand. There is no sense in talking about the future until I take care of business on May 25.”   “I need to thank my management team and Top Rank for this opportunity,” Herring said. “Not only is this fight landing on Memorial Day weekend, but May 25 would’ve been my daughter Ariyanah’s 10th birthday. She passed away from sudden infant death syndrome, and I am dedicating this fight to her. “I have tremendous respect for Ito, but I plan on being his most difficult challenge. I don’t want to release too much of the game plan, but I won’t be bullied like his last two opponents once the bell rings.” Ito (25-1-1, 13 KOs) claimed the vacant WBO junior lightweight title with an upset decision win over Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz at the Kissimmee Civic Center. The Diaz fight marked Ito’s United States debut and the first time he’d fought away from his native Japan. He returned home for his first title defense on Dec. 30, scoring a seventh-round TKO over Evgeny Chuprakov. Herring (19-2, 10 KOs), who served two tours of duty in Iraq as a field electrician, turned pro in December 2012 and won the first 15 bouts of his career. He lost a pair of fights as a lightweight, including a razor-thin decision to Ladarius Miler in August 2017. Following the Miller defeat, Herring signed on with Top Rank, hired trainer/manager Brian McIntyre and moved down to 130 pounds. Since then, he is 3-0, including an ESPN-televised decision victory over John Vincent Moralde last September on the Jose Ramirez-Antonio Orozco card in Fresno, California. In his last bout, Dec. 14 in Corpus Christi, Texas, he notched a clear points decision over Adeilson Dos Santos. Pedraza (25-2, 12 KOs) won the IBF junior lightweight title in 2015 and made a pair of title defenses. Following a 2017 TKO loss to Gervonta Davis, he moved up to the lightweight division. In his third bout at lightweight, he won a unanimous decision over Ray Beltran to claim the WBO title. Less than four months later, he faced off against WBA champion Vasiliy Lomachenko to unify world titles. He was competitive, but Lomachenko scored a pair of 11th-round knockdowns to secure the unanimous decision. Lozada (40-2-1, 34 KOs) burst onto the world stage last March, knocking out highly touted prospect Felix Verdejo in the 10th and final round. Since then, he is 1-0-1, including a disputed draw versus Hector Ambriz. "I feel very happy because on May 25 I will be fighting in a big world championship event where I will be facing a great Mexican warrior like Antonio 'Cañitas' Lozada in front of my people in Kissimmee,” Pedraza said. “I know I will get all that affection and support of all the Puerto Rican fans. They can’t miss this great card. I want them to enjoy it and leave the venue happy.   “I'm more than ready to get back in the picture for a world championship opportunity."
The entire undercard will stream live in the United States exclusively on ESPN+ starting at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT and will showcase a host of prospects in competitive matchups.
In a 10-round crossroads bout featuring a pair of one-loss featherweight prospects, Adam Lopez (12-1, 5 KOs) will face off against Puerto Rican puncher Jean Carlos Rivera (15-1, 10 KOs). Lopez has won four in a row, while Rivera is looking to rebound from a unanimous decision loss last October to the unbeaten Jason Sanchez.
Jeyvier Cintron (10-0, 5 KOs), one of the sport’s fastest-rising 115-pound prospects, will face his toughest test to date against former interim flyweight world champion and one-time super flyweight world title challenger Koki Eto (24-4-1, 19 KOs) in a 10-rounder. Cintron represented his native Puerto Rico at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, becoming the first two-time boxing Olympian in his nation’s history.
Steve “So Cold” Nelson (13-0, 10 KOs), a stablemate of pound-for-pound king Terence “Bud” Crawford, will take on Victor “The Spartan” Darocha (8-4-1, 6 KOs) in an eight- round super middleweight bout.
NABO junior welterweight champion Yomar “The Magic” Alamo (16-0, 12 KOs) will defend his belt in a 10-rounder against an opponent to be determined.
Antonio Vargas (10-0, 4 KOs), who represented the United States at the 2016 Rio Olympics, will fight Jose Maria Cardenas (16-4, 13 KOs) in an eight-round bantamweight bout.
Middleweight dynamo Edgar “Pachanga” Berlanga (10-0, 10 KOs) will look to make it 11 first-round KOs in as many fights against Hungarian veteran Gyorgy Varju (7-4, 4 KOs) in an eight-rounder.
Super featherweight prospect Henry “Moncho” LeBron (8-0, 6 KOs) will seek to extend his knockout streak to three versus Luis Ruiz Lizarraga Jr. (6-12-1, 2 KOs) in a six-rounder.

Jose Ramirez didn't want the hometown fans to leave unhappy. In front of a crowd of 11,102 at the Save Mart Center on Friday evening, Avenal native Ramirez retained the WBC super lightweight world title with a unanimous decision against fellow unbeaten Antonio Orozco. The scores were 119-107 3X. Ramirez (23-0, 16 KOs) knocked Orozco down with a crisp right hand in the fourth round and found success with his left hook throughout the bout. In the eighth round, Ramirez scored a knockdown with a left hook to the liver and nearly finished Orozco at the end of the round. "This was an excellent fight, and Antonio Orozco is a true warrior," Ramirez said. "We put it out there, and Antonio was a very tough opponent who gave it his all. A special thanks to all the people in Fresno who showed their support tonight." Ramirez won the belt with a hard-fought unanimous decision against Amir Imam back in March. For his first title defense, he took on a previously undefeated challenger in Orozco (27-1, 17 KOs), who on paper represented the toughest test of his career. Ramirez and Orozco went toe-to-toe and produced a championship bout for the ages. Flanked by his Marine comrades on his way to the ring, 2012 U.S. Olympian and Marine Corps veteran Jamel "Semper Fi" Herring (18-2, 10 KOs ) notched the most significant win of his carer, defeating John Vincent Moralde (20-2, 10 KOs) by 10-round unanimous decision (100-90 3X) to win the vacant USBA junior lightweight title.  "I wanted to show that I could not only make 130 pounds, but that I could be strong at the weight as well," Herring said. "Now, I'm that much closer to a world title shot." In his biggest test to date, 18-year-old sensation Gabriel Flores Jr. (10-0, 5 KOs) was undeterred by the big stage and the bright lights. Flores, from Stockton, Calif., survived a first-round knockdown to defeat Roger Gutierrez by unanimous decision in a six-round lightweight bout.  The scores were as followed: 59-54, 59-54, and 58-54.
“I could’ve done better, but I was in there against a tough guy. I have no explanation for it, but my legs locked up in the early rounds. I started moving in the last rounds, and my legs were feeling better. I boxed him and got the victory. All I can do from here is learn from this experience. “I came back strong. I know l will be better next time out.”
In other action: Vacant USBA Welterweight Title: Alexander Besputin (11-0, 9 KOs), TKO 9, 1:44, Alan Sanchez (20-4-1, 10 KOs). Besputin said: “I feel very grateful to be signed by Top Rank, the best promotional company in the world. I now want all of the big names at 135, including the winner of Lomachenko and Pedraza.”  Super Lightweights: Hiroki Okada (19-0, 13 KOs), split decision, 10 rounds, Cristian Cora (27-7-2, 11 KOs).
