Mr evershed x teen!reader - family isn’t always blood

Part three:

Sitting in your office at the dorms, you flicked through the pages of a very old book, eyes scanning over the words as you took some time to yourself.

There was a knock on the door, and you called for whoever it was to come in.

“Ms Carter and Mr Evershed would like to know if the students can come watch the rugby game with the other students.” Yato said.

“If they wish to yes.”

Yato walked in, closing the door and he sat on the chair on the other side of your desk, picking up one of the books.

“This magic has been outlawed right?”

“Yes, it has. However I’m not interested in practicing it.”

He hummed a little bit.

“You’re looking for the way to reverse what they did.”

You nodded your head, setting the book down that you were reading.

“Yes, i have been looking for centuries but I see no way of going about it.”

“You’ve been doing this for years, perhaps it is time to accept you can’t reverse the curse.”

“Every curse has a way to break it, I just need to find the way to break this one.”

Yato sighed.

“I have been with your for as long as I can remember, we’re still no closer to finding out what that may be.”

You ran a hand down your face.

“Look, come with me to watch whatever this rugby is, then we’ve got to plan the yearly tournament afterwards, use it as a break.”

“I don’t have the time to be taking unnecessary breaks.”

“You are taking a break, now come with me.”

He stood up, grabbing your jacket from the back of the door, holding it out to you.

You got up, taking your jacket from him you pulled it on and followed him outside, and you both walked to the end of the hallway.

He held his hand out, opening a portal to the school and followed you through it, both of you making your way outside to where Julie, Sebastian and Ben were already standing with the students.

You stood next to them, hands clasped behind your back.

“It’s a really interesting game.” Yato said.

“I thought you had no interest.” Sebastian smirked.

“I have no interest in taking part, watching however is intriguing.”

You heard a small commotion among your students and you looked to the side, making your way over to them.

“What’s going on?”

Immediately all the students straightened up, hands behind their backs as they looked at you.

“Josiah?”

“The Ackley students are mocking us.”

You slowly nodded your head, flicking your gaze to the small group of normal students who were grinning and snickering to themselves.

You looked at the summoning circle in the middle of your students, and you held your hand over it, balling your fingers into a fist to break it.

“So you thought you would retaliate with magic?”

They all took a nervous step back.

“All of you, classroom. Now.”

They quickly nodded, and jogged away, and you turned to the other students.

“Do not let me catch you using your powers for anything outside of the classroom.” You warned.

They all nodded their heads, and you made your way into the school, straight to your classroom where all of the students were waiting.

“Let’s go.”

They quietly followed you as you led them to the hall, and you looked at the few teachers that were setting it up for a parents evening.

“Hello, could I have the floor for a few moments, thank you.”

“Yeah, of course you can.” Ms Carter smiled.

She ushered everybody to the side and you sat on the stage, placing a hand behind you as you looked at your students.

“So, would anybody care to explain to me why you thought that behaviour was appropriate?”

“They started it, throwing things at us and trying to hit us.” A boy scoffed.

“Then you should have informed one of the teachers, whether it was one of yours or the others it doesn’t matter.”

“We did! We told Mrs Carp! She told us to grow up!”

You slowly nodded your head, watching as Ms Carter walked over.

Yato and Julie walked in with Mrs Carp and Mr Evershed.

Ms Carter stood next to you.

“Then why did you not inform somebody else?”

“We just thought if we scared them a little they’d stop…” a girl mumbled.

You sat up straight.

“So you thought you would retaliate with magic?”

The group of students all went quiet and you stood up on the stage.

“A question demands an answer!” You snapped.

All the students stood up straight, clasping their hands behind their backs as they looked up at you.

“Yes!” They replied.

You began pacing back and forth.

“You are the elite class supposedly the best and brightest that MTA have to offer!”

You turned to them all.

“You know the rules of magic! You know the consequences of using it outside a permitted environment!” You yelled.

You turned fully to look at them all.

“Not only did you endanger yourselves by using a summoning spell you have no idea how to control but you endangered everybody else at that field!”

“Lukas preformed the spell, he knows how to summon things.” A boy replied.

You turned your gaze to Lukas who nodded his head.

“And do you believe you have full control over your spells Lukas?”

He stepped forward.

“No.”

“Then why would you think it’s acceptable to use it?!”

“I acted rashly, I apologise.”

You took a small breath, composing yourself.

“You will all be suspended for two weeks, you will have your powers contained until I am confident that you can be trusted to use them again, and you will all be forbidden to enter or be present at the tournament.”

“No! You can’t do that!” Someone yelled.

They all began to protest and you stared at them all.

“Enough!” You shouted.

Immediately they went quiet, and you held your hand out, a small pentagram appearing, and it vanished after a second, the same mark on the backs of their hands.

“You will report to Yato, he will send you back to the dorms where you are to sit in your own rooms until I come to speak with you all.”

They all nodded, following the other teacher out of the room and you turned to Ms Carter, gesturing to her.

“Your turn.”

They had brought in the next group of student who had started the trouble, and Ms Carter began to tell them all off.

You walked over to Julie, standing next to her.

“Did you have to ban them from the tournament?”

“What other choice was there? That behaviour was unacceptable.”

“Shall I inform their parents?”

You thought for a moment.

“No. Not on this occasion, next time if this happens again then yes.”

She nodded her head.

“Have we organised a venue for the tournament yet?”

“Yes, an island just on the coast of Scotland. Everything is being set up now as we speak, it will be ready for next month.”

You nodded your head.

“Good. I would like you to go and oversee the preparations.”

“Very well.”

She left, and you turned to leave, making your way back to the office so you could make yourself a cup of tea.

You made another one, walking outside you set it down on the reception desk, sitting down on one of the chairs.

“Oh is that wonder chai tea you make?” Loraine gasped.

“It is, I told you I would make you some when I received my ingredients.”

Loraine beamed brightly, picking up the cup and sat down.

It was quiet for a few minutes, Ms Carter and Mr Evershed came through, both of them smiling at you.

“All the students have been dealt with.” Mr Evershed said.

You nodded.

“What is the tournament?” Ms Carter asked.

“Every year MTA host a tournament for all students across all schools, students will go head to head against each other to see who is stronger, faster. It is also when we host our entrance exams for new students to decide where they should be placed, the students that come top of their classes are given an extra two weeks holiday, and can train under a mutant of their picking for the training month.”

“Is that even legal?” Mr Evershed asked.

“Completely yes, the students don’t fight against each other. Their skills are tested by the teachers and then graded upon a point system.”

The both nodded their heads.

“It is also an opportunity for masters in their field to see who they would like to join their team, work alongside of them.”

“What jobs do mutants do?” Mr Evershed asked you.

He sat down next to you while Ms Carter went to deal with some students.

“We can either join normal jobs, police, doctor, chef, cleaner, shop assistant, whatever they’d like. Or, we can go into specialist fields, government work with mutants, science, engineering, whatever requires magic or powers to use. We can also go into other professions such as a gatekeeper. You need top qualifications to do this, as well as an affiliation to summoning, a gatekeeper ensures that all spirits summoned do not break free.”

He nodded his head in understanding.

“Very few are selected to become teachers for MTA, they must be elites, able to contain out of control magic at any given point.”

“So you’re an elite?”

“Not quite, elite is the classification given to a mutant who has the ability to master every aspect of a mutant, these are naturally born. Nobody can be simply taught how to do this, it is part of that persons bloodline.”

“Then what are you?”

“As I said, I am a very powerful sorcerer. A mutants powers oriented from the curses placed on people by sorcerers which means that I am able to master these aspects to a deeper level than an elite.”

“How can you tell the difference between a sorcerer and a mutant?”

“A mutant has the ability to use their powers without summonings circles, a sorcerer no matter what it is they are trying to achieve will always need a summoning circle. A mutants power is from within, a sorcerer relies on the energy from nature.”

You stood up, walking to the reception desk you set your cup down, gesturing for him to follow you out to the field and he did.

You looked over your students.

“Ah Julio, can I borrow you?”

“Of course.”

He walked over and stood in front of you.

“Julio here is our most proficient when it comes to botany, plants and herbs. He is also on a fast track to becoming a natural healer, using his knowledge to create ointments and creams for mild injuries.”

Mr Evershed nodded his head.

“Julio, can you give Mr Evershed a demonstration on how you would grow a plant that you need?”

“Of course, first I would need to find a suitable spot for that plant. Somewhere with rich dirt, sunlight.”

You followed the pair of them.

Julio crouched down.

“Next, I visualise the plant I need, if I don’t know what the plant looks like then I can’t create it.”

“I imagine it would take a good memory to remember them all?”

Julio hummed.

“Yes sir, and a lot of reading as well. Next, I just take what’s around me, and the energy inside of me to grow this plant.”

He placed his hand on the grass, a small green glow emitting from his fingers as a small plant began to sprout, started as just a stem before some small white flowers grew.

He moved his hand away, plucking on of the flowers and he stood up, holding it out.

“A daisy is used in a lot of ointments we use, purely to help neutralise everything else we may use.”

“Wow, that’s amazing. How long have you been doing this for?” He asked.

“Since I was a boy sir, a mutant generally finds their power at a young age, I enjoyed being with nature, and one day when my mom was sad I grew her a whole field of wildflowers.”

Mr Evershed smiled.

“That’s wonderful, you have an amazing power Julio.”

“Thank you sir.”

You stood next to the student.

“As a sorcerer I can’t do what Julio did, I require a summoning circle to do so.”

You held your hand out, a pentagram just in front of your fingers, a green glow to it as another appeared on the grass, creating the same flowers.

You broke the circle and clasped your hands behind your back.

“A summoner doesn’t just create, we take things from another location and bring them into our location. In order to create things from the energy of nature it requires a lot of practice, a lot of dedication and time.”

“Does this mean there are books and such to teach you this stuff?”

“Yes.”

Mr Evershed nodded his head and you turned to Julio.

“Thank you Julio, you can go now.”

He beamed brightly before jogging away to be with his friends.

“I am the only sorcerer left, which means all these books fall under my protection.”

Mr Evershed nodded his head.

“Thank you for explaining all of this.”

“If you have any more questions I will be at the dorms.”

With that, you were gone, and you appeared in your room, hanging both your blazer and your jacket up, walking over to your mirror.

You took your tie off, setting it aside and unbuttoned your shirt slightly, pulling it down so you could look at the mark just below your shoulder.

It wasn’t a summoners circle, this pentagram was different, but you still weren’t able to place it, but you were getting closer you knew that for a fact.

Buttoning your shirt back up, you put your tie back on and walked over to the sofa and laid down, resting your arm over your eyes as you let out a heavy sigh.

If you could break that seal, you could finally grow old and leave this dreadful life you despised behind

The perfect secret

Izaiah blamed Alara for bringing them down this path, but the truth is, those boys got their hands dirty long before that. Izaiah owed Carter for the favor that came years before. Those very close to young Izaiah and Isabella knew that their father was a cruel man. He would beat the shit out of them for any minor inconvenience. It went too far, one day in particular, he put his hands on Isabella in a way that left her badly beaten, he of course got in the middle but enough was enough.

The police report said a burglar broke in and murdered his father, a cold case never solved. That was not the case. It was Izaiah who pulled the trigger, to free his family from the abuse. But who to call to help? Carter. They left the body, cleaned the prints off the gun, and provided each other with alibies, playing video games at Carter's house. No one knew it was unsolvable.

Flash forward 12 years or so, and Carter picks up the phone and called Izaiah, he had a mess he needed help cleaning up. When Izzy showed up at the provided location, he saw no other than McKenna dead on the floor. Old times die hard, right? But that was when he got sucked in. He owed Carter, and thanks to him, he didn't spend the rest of his life in jail. So he did what he was told but that came crashing down at the carnival. Nadia was killed, Alara escaped and Carter was arrested.

At this point he was stuck, Harrison was stabbed and sent to find Izzy, and the next part of the plan was set in action. It started out with stabbings, first Jesse, followed by Brody, one he made sure was non-lethal. and he finished it off by killing Josiah, his sisters husbands brother... not his finest moment. He felt particularly guilty for stabbing Danny, he was a sweet kid, but oh well. Now that the ball was rolling, he was able to use his talents more and stop getting his hands dirty. Setting the Jones' house on fire was too easy, and quite fun as Izaiah always had a thing with playing with fire. The poison for Nico was a nice touch. The thing about these murders is they were less random and more focused for Harrison. After Alara was dead, they didn't have to take her barking orders anymore, that was a plus, but sadly it wasn't a way out... like he would take one anyway

The only thing he regretted was getting caught because some sick bone inside him might have snapped, but for once in his life he had control and he liked it. Standing in that office, he knew Harrison was going to die, he deserved it anyway. All three of them should have... Regardless, Carter betrayed them. When the cops busted in and Carterr told him he would like prison his face dropped. "Carter you bitch." He sneered. How could he do this to them? "Officers, I did nothing! I'm just an innocent witness." He would never admit to being guilty, maybe someone would believe him, until then, this was his downfall.

Schuyler elopements

The following accounts are from Women of Colonial and Revolutionary Times: Catherine Schuyler (1897) by Mary Gay Humphreys.

Regarding the elopement of Angelica Schuyler and John Church:

“Carter and my eldest daughter ran off and were married on the twenty-third of July. Unacquainted with his family connections and situation in life the matter was exceedingly disagreeable and I signified it to them” [Philip Schuyler to William Duer, pg 191]

[One can read my speculation about why, (x), considering the above, AH was nevertheless acceptable to the Schuylers]

Regarding the elopement (that I don’t think was an elopement, just a surprising marriage due to SVR’s youth) of Margarita (Peggy) Schuyler and Stephen Van Rensselaer:

“Stephen’s precipitate marriage has been to me a source of surprise and indeed of regret. He certainly is too young to enter into a connection of this kind; the period of his life is an important crisis; it is the time to acquire Fame, or at least to prepare for its acquisition. It is the Time to engage in a busy life, to arouse the Facultys into action, to awake from a lithargic Inattention, which is generally the consequence of youthful pleasures, and make a figure upon the active Theatre. Instead of this our field has indulged the momentary impulse of youthful Passions, and has yielded to the dictates of Remorseful Fancy.” [Harrison Gray Otis to Killian Van Rensselaer, pg 195]

Regarding the elopement of Cornelia Schuyler and Washington Morton:

At the Morton home in New Jersey there had been a notable wedding, that of Eliza Morton to Josiah Quincy of Boston. The Rev. Samuel Smith of Princton College performed the ceremony before all the aristocracy of the time....Among the guests was Miss Cornelia Schuyler. The bride had a brother, Washington Morton. He made himself prominent as a lad during the British occupation by losing a darning needle which, being the only one in the neighborhood, accordingly had to be loaned from house to house. He was now one of the young bloods of the time. One of his recent enterprises had been a walk to Philadelphia on a wager. He was accompanied by various young men on horseback and in carriages. That night he gave them a dinner at Philadelphia, and was one of the liveliest of the company. He was of superb figure and very athletic. The admiration of Miss Schuyler and Mr. Morton was mutual and prompt. He followed the young lady to Albany and declared his attentions to her father. His walk had given him much distinction, but it was not the sort likely to win the approval of so strict a disciplinarian as General Schuyler, or the championship of so considerate a mother as his wife.

The young man’s suit was refused. “He has not taken that place which befitted a married man,” and the General, to make sure of his position, led the young man to the wharf and saw him aboard the New York sloop. Returning home he called his daughter into the library and told her what he had done. “My wishes will be respected? Promise me to have nothing to do with him by word or letter.”

“I cannot.”

“What! do you mean to disobey me?”

“I mean I cannot bind myself; I will not.”

The issue was made. What steps were taken to secure obedience do not appear. In time, however, the impatient lover found opportunity to send his love a letter, and one moonlit evening two muffled figures appeared under Miss Cornelia’s window. At a low whistle the window opened and a rope was thrown up. Attached to the rope was a rope ladder, which making fast like a veritable heroine of romance the bride descended. They were driven to the river, where a boat was waiting to take them across. On the other side was the coach-and-pair. They were then driven thirty miles across country to Stockbridge, where an old friend of the Morton family lived. It was Judge Theodore Sedgwick, not unknown to General Schuyler in Congress and about the troublesome boundary commissions. The affair had gone too far. The judge sent for a neighboring minister and the runaways were duly married. So flagrant a breach of the parental authority was not to be hastily forgotten. Philip and Catherine Schuyler had had had various experiences in kind, but this transcended everything out of fiction, from which in fact it seems to have been carefully copied. It was some months before the young couple was pardoned, by the stern father at least, for the mother’s heart quickly responded to the happiness of her children, even though they had been so willful. As in the case of the other runaways, the youthful Mortons disappointed expectation, by becoming important householders and taking a prominent place in the social life of New York, where Washington Morion achieved some distinction at the bar. Industry’s voracious but volatile demand for labor was met by immigration to the United States on a grand scale. Fifteen million immigrants arrived in the United States between 1890 and 1914, and nearly 70 percent of the new arrivals were Catholics, Jews, and Orthodox Christians from southern and eastern Europe.

The brutal reestablishment of white supremacy in the American South confronted African Americans with disenfranchisement, debt peonage, and organized racial terror. Native Americans, decimated when Europeans colonized America, were decimated again by coerced relocations, carried out by a postbellum US Army in need of new missions. Egged on by agitators like Dennis Kearney, white mobs attacked Chinese immigrants, accusing them of undercutting the American workingman.

The women who chose to live among the immigrant poor in city slums called themselves “settlers,” not neighbors.

Richard T. Ely and his colleagues, John R. Commons and Edward A. Ross, campaigned to bar immigrants they judged racially inferior.

The first generation of progressive scholars and activists who wielded these views, including those previously named, were born largely between the mid-1850s and 1870.

Nearly all descended from old New England families. More often than not, progressives were the children of Protestant ministers or missionaries.

The progressives’ urge to reform America sprang from an evangelical compulsion and they unabashedly described their purposes as a Christian mission to build a Kingdom of Heaven on earth.

The American Economic Association (AEA), founded in 1885 by these same prpgressives' embodied the social gospel’s distinctive amalgam of liberal Protestant ethics, the evangelizing activism of pious, middle-class reformers. Clergyman Josiah Strong praised the AEA for its Christian political economy. Of the AEA’s fifty-five charter members, twenty-three were clergymen.

Richard T. Ely was the the prime mover behind the AEA’s establishment.

Just as Christian salvation was increasingly socialized, so too was sin.

“God works through the State,” Ely professed, more so than through any other institution, including, he implied, the church.

One of the AEA’s leaders was Henry Carter Adams whose father, Ephraim Adams, was a Congregationalist missionary who had moved his family to the wilderness so that they could dedicate their lives to building a Christian west of the Mississippi.

Economics, Adams wrote to his father "is work which a follower of Christ may do.”

Charles Richmond Henderson, was a minister who served as the University of Chicago's chaplain. Just as Ely regarded the state, so Henderson regarded the new social sciences, as a God-given instrument of Christian economic reform.

Later, even as they secularized their Christian idiom, they did not abandon the evangelical idealism driving their reform mission.

That's a great question and a fun task for me! I had considered doing predictions for Baby C but decided against it since I didn't think there was any chance we'd find out the name anyway. But let's go for it!

Name Predictions for Swanson-Duggar #2 - Boy

We have speculated that this baby is a boy because of the notable absence of bows in pics we have seen, although it's possible it could be a girl too. I will only include boy predictions in this post.

Previous Naming Information

Josiah Matthew Duggar and Lauren Milagro (Swanson) Duggar share one child together, Bella Milagro Duggar (b. 2019) in addition to this speculated baby boy. Additionally, the couple suffered a miscarriage before Bella's birth, and they named this lost baby Asa. The couple has confirmed they are doing an alphabet naming theme, so this baby's name should begin with C- unless they have lost another pregnancy prior to this one.

Preliminary Predictions

Since we have a clear, confirmed theme, I'll begin by making a list of C- boy names in the top 500 or so on the Social Security list from 2021, the most recent year data is available. I will be excluding Charles/Charlie from the list though because this is the name of John and Abbie's second child. Even though he was born after this speculated SiRen offspring, I don't think John and Abbie would have chosen a name already used by another couple.

I think that gives us a pretty good selection, although there are already some I'd think they'd be much more likely to use than others. I will add another into the mix that wasn't in the top 500 but is Biblical and could still be a contender: Canaan.

As for the middle name, I would say it's pretty likely they would use Josiah's middle name, Matthew. Other contenders might be Dwain or Charles after Lauren's dad.

My Final Predictions

This is a little difficult because the styles and popularity of Asa and Bella are so different. It is nice knowing that there is a definite theme though. I would say the five most likely contenders for the first name in my opinion are Carter, Cameron, Connor, Caden/Cayden/Caiden, and Canaan. However, if Caleb were not the name Michelle had given to one of her pregnancy losses it would be my frontrunner. I don't know if that's enough to prevent them from using it, but it gives me pause at least. Cooper also gives me the same "nicknamey, dog-name" vibe that Bella has.

Overall, I think my top choice is Caden or some spelling variety of that with the middle name Matthew. Here is my list of top ten first and middle name combinations.
