A woman, an elephant, and an uncommon love story spanning nearly half a century.
Issue no. 136 — “Sanctuary” by Shannon McCaffrey — is now live at The Atavist.
Here outside the small town of Attapulgus, near quail-hunting plantations and pecan groves, Buckley had built a refuge for elephants. It was the culmination of a nearly lifelong devotion to the world’s largest land animals. But at the moment, Buckley’s refuge lacked any elephants—and one elephant in particular.
There are many kinds of love stories. This one involves a woman and an elephant, and the bond between them spanning nearly 50 years. It involves devotion and betrayal. It also raises difficult questions about the relationship between humans and animals, about control and freedom, about what it means to own another living thing.
The woman in this story is Buckley. The elephant is named Tarra. They met at a tire store in California, and together followed a serpentine path from spectacle to safety: from circus rings to zoo enclosures to a first-of-its-kind sanctuary. But now their bond was being tested. For complex reasons, Buckley had lost custody of Tarra, and just before Michael struck, a jury had deadlocked on whether the two should be reunited. In a few months, the case would go to trial again. If Buckley won, she would bring Tarra home to Attapulgus. If she lost, it was possible she’d never see the elephant again.
The uncertainty was a nightmare. But the fence Buckley built for Tarra had withstood a monstrous storm. This was, she thought, a good omen.

i wrote out the post so formal though so they couldn’t get a whiff of the fact i am not asking because i intend to write an article for cinemablend but instead for my tumblr blog so my fellow mentally ill queers and i can go insane over a piece of prop to prove one of the hundreds of theories we all have ping ponging between us

entertaining the idea of shared journals
one of my favourite fake rumours which i can’t, unfortunately, find the source of at the moment, is that when they are apart, they have a couple of journals where they write in, and they exchange them when they meet
i swallow this whole, this would be a nice trope if i were to write fanfiction, so this is what it is: fake, fanfiction, cpn
this idea entertains me, because journals have been a part of my life since i was a teen. for a while, it was the only space where i could feel free to express myself
twice in my life i had experience of writing in a journal that was intentionally kept for another person and from time to time exchanged with them
once with a younger best friend, and the other time with my then-boyfriend. it is a very special experience, to carry a notebook and jot down thoughts, observations, reflections, quotes; it is like letter-writing “on steroids”
with my younger best friend, it was before the time of the Internet, or cellphones, or instant messaging.
each of us carried some loose paper along, and each time he or i were hit with an urge to write something, we jotted down the date and the time, and just wrote whatever we felt like writing at the moment. every three weeks or so we took the sheaves of paper, put it into an envelope and sent it by snail mail. we lived in different cities, and intercity phone calls in our country were expensive and inconvenient
for two neurodivergent persons, this sort of asynchronous written communication was perfect
this sounds like some sort of makoto shinkai’s plot embellishment, I can just see it in my imagination :) but it was real, and it was magical
it was very romantic to wait for the thick envelope to arrive, and then to find a spot to sit comfortably and read, comparing his journey with mine — were we synchronised in our thoughts and experiences, despite being apart?
with my then-boyfriend, we had not much time to spend together, because I worked 3 jobs, including night shifts several times a week, and some weekend gigs; we did not live together. He wanted to spend more time with me, and so we decided to keep shared journals. it was a treasured experience.
…i do believe that since becoming involved in art studies, xz might have kept art notebooks, this is very common; maybe, while reading books, he copies the passages that struck a chord with him?
anything that is shared digitally can be stolen, stored for future nefarious uses, kept as a bargaining/ blackmailing chip, or leaked, duplicated at infinitum, and distorted
the quaint analogue journal, plain old pen-and-paper, can in general be a safer option as far as privacy is concerned. it can be shredded and destroyed to ashes, if the person gets in an especially tight spot, and so far technology is not advanced enough to reconstitute the contents from the ashes
...and i don’t forget the therapeutic value of writing; every little bit that can be available for strengthening resilience, is valuable

Mandrake Sanctuary
It doesn't get a ton of page traffic, and I think people here might enjoy it, so I wanted to talk about Mandrake Sanctuary.
Mandrake Sanctuary is a journaling ttrpg that you play by collecting and growing little plant creatures.
The plant creatures you grow are all based on real world plants, such as the rose, lotus, or prickly pear, and they start out as seedlings but then grow according to the soil mixture you put them in.
Different soil mixtures have different activation requirements, and these can be anything from 'activates when you go to school or work' to 'activates when you exercise' to 'activates when you take time to rest.' When a soil activates, the mandrake in it grows a little bit, and you draw these changes.
To put it differently, with Mandrake Sanctuary, you pick habits in yourself that you want to cultivate, and you pick adorable plant gremlins that you want to raise too. Your mandrakes grow when you work on your habits in the real world, and over time you can release them, swap out the soil mixtures, and adopt new mandrakes.
It's slow-paced, cozy, and gentle, and the book supports journaling as well as drawing if you're more comfortable with words than art (or vice versa.)
Mandrake Sanctuary has been out for a while, but it got a big update patch a few months ago basically doubling its size and adding more art and more player resources.
If you check it out, I'd love to hear about the kinds of mandrakes you raise.

Moral hazards.  September 19, 2022
Robert B. Hubbell
“Moral hazard” is an evocative phrase that recognizes the moral dimension of economic and political decisions. An easy example is Trump’s promise to pardon January 6th insurrectionists if he is elected as president in 2024. In that scenario, insurrectionists are encouraged to engage in more insurrection. Moreover, some voters are encouraged to support an aspiring dictator, which in turn encourages the aspiring dictator to take even more lawless positions. In that example of cascading hazards, Trump’s behavior seduces and corrupts people to support a dictatorial regime that is the antithesis of their native beliefs in law, order, and personal liberty.
Trump is a moral hazard to the Republican Party. In six years, he has convinced the party faithful to support and engage in increasingly corrupt, cruel, and reckless practices that undermine their morality and ethics—while posing a danger to our republic. Ron DeSantis’s callous abuse of refugees to make a political point (and gain a few votes) is an example of the GOP’s willingness to engage in increasingly cruel and reckless behavior to regain political control.
After the widespread condemnation of DeSantis, one would think that DeSantis would back off the offending behavior. On the contrary, DeSantis has followed Trump’s model by doubling down on the cruel behavior—because many Trump voters supported the heartless trafficking of refugees. See CBS Miami, More migrant flights likely; Gov. DeSantis: “The legislature gave me $12 million.”
Many commentators say that “The cruelty is the point.” What does that mean? It means that extremist Republicans take perverse glee in seeing the moral indignation of decent people shocked at the sight of gratuitous cruelty. They call it “Owning the libs”—an immature game that comes at a steep cost. By applauding political stunts that treat humans as stage props, extremist Republicans are debasing their humanity, morality, and decency. As Jennifer Rubin wrote over the weekend, “Republicans are wearing cruelty as a badge of honor.” That is the moral hazard of supporting Trump, DeSantis, and their acolytes.
The cost is particularly steep for those who—like DeSantis—somehow rationalize their cruelty in the name of Christianity. DeSantis has begun spouting the cri de guerre of Christian nationalism, i.e., “Put on the full armor of God,” and Trump has engineered a hostile takeover of large swaths of the evangelical Christian church.
The PEW Research Center recently released a report modeling the future of religion in America. The report's primary finding is that “[i]f recent trends in religious switching continue, Christians could make up less than half of the US population within a few decades.” Christians currently comprise 64% of the US population, a decrease from 90% in 1970.
It would be foolish to assert that the substantial decline in Christianity is caused by the increasing political activism in the church. But it would also be foolish to pretend that the increasing political activism of the Christian church is unrelated to its rapid decline in America. When “going to church” feels like “going to a political rally,” the obvious question arises: Why not just go to the political rally?
The current hatred of immigrants by Christian nationalists hollows the soul of an institution that has welcomed and cared for immigrants since its founding, e.g., the Nativity Narrative and the parable of the Good Samaritan. It is too much to expect that Christian nationalists will recognize their hypocrisy. But it is not too much to expect that other Christians will condemn those who have perverted a founding principle of the Christian church. Until the voices of Christian charity and love drown out the hate-filled rhetoric of Christian nationalism, it is up to the media and concerned Americans to highlight the hypocrisy and cruelty of the Republican Party.
And as Christian nationalists follow Trump over a moral precipice, he may be leading them to a freshly minted circle of hell. Trump is now using QAnon imagery and slogans at his rallies. See APNews, Trump openly embraces, amplifies QAnon conspiracy theories. Will Christian evangelicals follow Trump as he promotes a fringe conspiracy theory with religious overtones, e.g., an apocalyptic “Storm” that will end the reign of Satan-worshipping pedophiles? They already are. See CNN, How QAnon uses religion to lure unsuspecting Christians. Such is the moral hazard of supporting and excusing Trump’s politics of hate and cruelty. After a while, nothing seems too outrageous or hateful to believe.
Finally, DeSantis’s effort to engage in human trafficking poses a legal hazard to DeSantis. He is currently unconcerned, but when Ted Cruz says that a fellow Republican is engaged in illegal behavior, you should worry. See The Independent, Ted Cruz forced to admit trafficking migrants to Martha’s Vineyard is illegal in Sean Hannity interview. An attorney for thirty of the refugees trafficked by DeSantis is demanding a DOJ investigation. See The Independent, Migrants’ lawyers call for criminal investigation into DeSantis’ Martha’s Vineyard stunt.
And while the political fallout may be the least important consideration, Spanish-language radio stations in Florida were harshly critical of DeSantis’s virtual kidnapping of the Venezuelan refugees. See Politico, ‘Huge mistake’: DeSantis’ migrant transports could undercut support in South Florida. As noted in Politico,
“Florida Republicans in recent years have made it a priority to court Venezuelan Americans, many of whom fled their home country in the past decade amid the political and economic turmoil under Nicolás Maduro and his predecessor Hugo Chávez. It’s a story that has parallels to Cuban Americans — a crucial bloc of support for the GOP — who left their country to escape communism.”

i wanted to ask for mobage recs if anyone has stuff .. part of the reason i'm generally happy with PC & occasional switch gaming is that they 1. don't have ads 2. don't push microtransactions 3. don't inundate me with notifications (e.g., games with a mail box and a gift inbox and many little things to check)
i wouldn't mind paying for a small casual game if it means i don't have to deal with ads. i don't mind microtransactions existing, but a game that really leans on premium currency and paying for processes to be sped up and so on can get tiring.
i had fun with neko atsume and played it for years, but something with a bit more interaction would be nice. i've played casual mobile games (whose names i cannot remember) involving stuff like cats going fishing that you might check a few times a day to pick up your currency/rewards, which isn't too bad. i think pokemon cafe was pretty good too.
but yeah basically i'd be willing to pay for a game that can offer these things while being less annoying. alternatively, if you've purchased an ad-free version of a free game that is in line with all this stuff and found it to be good, then feel free to recommend that too.
so if anyone has a chill mobile (or pc) game rec involving pet/animal elements, farming/gardening, and/or food/cooking i'd love to hear it

weird to see borderlands fans who are like “if you dislike Ava it’s because you’re a toxic misogynistic bro fan”
IDK I think it’s crazy that anyone managed to like Ava, I tried to like her but the cards were stacked against her, she’s the epitome of a scrappy and the writers just kind of inexplicably assumed “well since maya likes her people will find her likable” and then they didn’t put any work into it, made her do stuff that worked towards her being wildly unlikable, and practically rewarded her for getting maya killed
some people are just misogynistic about how they choose to express their distaste for her
