A really good friend today exclaimed to the world that Final Fantasy X has "one of the best rpg battle themes of all time" and like-
It's fine? There is nothing bad about it. It is perfectly acceptable as battle music, but I feel like I'm going nuts trying to understand how it's "best rpg battle theme" material.
It's not even the best Final Fantasy battle theme, so contender for "best rpg battle theme of all time" seems like ridiculously high praise.
Is it me or does this feel like legit JRPG main menu music right here?
I mean it does have strong Kingdom Hearts-Final Fantasy theme remix vibes-and I just love it.
Feel free to check out more of Tor's music here and show them some appreciation :https://tormusic.bandcamp.com
I think my most obscure aesthetic hangup is that thing soundtracks from JRPGs out of the 2000s do where the music that plays when you're fighting an important boss has this a motif involving a series of three triplets in ascending pitch with increasing emphasis on the terminal notes, like dum dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum DUM.
If you're not acquainted with JRPG soundtracks of that era I probably sound like a crazy person right now, but if you are, then you Know.

"In Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom, music and love weave their way through the past, present, and future! As the concluding installment of the stories of the Marl Kingdom and its characters, this is one magical story you won't want to miss.
Though true love is the destination, there are many magical paths that can lead you to it. Experience the stories of Cornet, the ruler of the Marl Kingdom, her daughter Kururu, the 'Tomboy Princess,' and other lovestruck souls in Marl Kingdom, all of which span the past, present, and future of the Rhapsody series. Tales of true love both new and old await you, including the fate of Kururu's impending marriage, two starcrossed lovers and their warring families, and the journey of Cornet’s mother, Cherie. The trials and tribulations each of these characters face will put their hearts to the test like never before. Will true love truly prevail?"
This is the third and final game in the Rhapsody series - a trilogy of romantic comedy musical JRPGs - released in English for the first time.
You can get the Steam version here, the PS5 version here, or the Nintendo Switch version here! The console releases contain both Rhapsody II and Rhapsody III, under the name "Rhapsody: Marl Kingdom Chronicles".
Less that 24 hours to go before Small Saga drops! So hype.
Things you (yes, you!) should do:
- Go get the game on Steam https://store.steampowered.com/app/1320140/Small_Saga/
- Go follow its dev, Darya Noghani: @sketchylogic here, or @Sketchy_Jeremy on Twitter. Probably other places too!
- Darya was also one of the devs on Avian Attorney, a cool game about birds, lawyers, and lawyers who are birds, so play that!
- Darya let me guest on their soundtrack, which was so cool of them! Go pick up my EP, Rat-Tailed Rover, which has the songs I contributed to the game: https://kofiyoung.bandcamp.com/album/rat-tailed-rover-songs-from-small-saga
- From tomorrow, you can also listen to Rat-Tailed Rover on Spotify, Apple, YouTube…anywhere you get your music streams!
Anyway, thanks for reading and enjoy the game! Sam and I are gonna be playing Small Saga every Monday night on our Twitch, so watch this space!
