Hatake Kakashi x Yamato | Tenzo
3773 words.
Ao3 Link [x]
for @kakayamaweek2022 Day 7: Vows.
When Kakashi risked his own life, reputation and career to help Tenzo escape from the clutches of Root, Tenzo vowed to follow him wherever he went.
The boy's life leading up to the event had been turbulent and chaotic, a mix of indoctrination and harsh training, when all name, all recognition, all emotion and all humanity was pushed out of him thoroughly. He’d wanted to be nobody, just wanted to be a vessel to be used, just as Danzo-sama wished he was. Tenzo was too eager to comply with the man who had gotten him out of the tube, who had shown him the tiniest bit of fatherly compassion just to turn around and use it against him again. Tenzo did not care who he was or what his powers were used for, good or evil or right or wrong, that was at least until he met Hatake Kakashi.
Just a chance meeting, two people on the same mission on opposite sides, but Tenzo had not gotten Kakashi out of his mind afterwards. From the very first time their ANBU masks laid eyes onto each other their fates seemed irrevocably connected to each other, like it was destiny that they were to be sent away together, to chase Orochimaru for different gains, to meet and fight alongside each other to save Yukimi’s innocent life, to give her a future.
Tenzo had watched this, the passion Kakashi put into everything he did, the fluid motion of his fighting and the light in his eyes. He was stern and had conviction, but not in any way Root operatives had. Kakashi was human, every one of his actions was bathed in his humanity. His desire to help, his desire to fulfil his mission, his desire to be a good shinobi in every aspect he could. It was fascinating. Tenzo wanted to see more, but before long they were both separated again and he didn’t know when he could see Kakashi again.
And once they met again, when Tenzo was rude and aweful to him, convinced killing him was for the greater good, Kakashi showed nothing but his humanity, his kindness. He was not shy of calling Tenzo a friend, taking him in like an old acquaintance and taking care that he was safe. Nothing Tenzo had done would have required such an action, in fact, Tenzo couldn’t have blamed him if Kakashi had just let him die, especially after calling him the rude and untrue nickname the villagers had made up for him. But in his reaction to being called a murderer, Kakashi was just human again, slouching forward, eyes falling and most of all, he did not disagree. Maybe that was when Tenzo knew that Kakashi was everything that he’d ever want to be.
The boy had been ready to die to let Kakashi survive. He knew Danzo would never allow such a blatant disregard to his orders. He had seen other children get the curse mark, swallow their tongue and die. Danzo was not playing around with his elite squad. Tenzo was weirdly unafraid about it. He knew it was well worth it if Kakashi was going to have a life, because he desrved it, because he deserved growing up and learning to disagree when people falsly called him a murderer. So while Tenzo was afraid of Danzo just a little deep inside him, he was ready to be sacrificed. It was one of the first choices he’d made for himself and it felt good.
But Kakashi was there again, by his side, pulling him away from the danger. In those moments in which Tenzo followed Kakashi through hallways of Root facilities, watching his hair fly in the air behind him, the way his arms moved and his hand grabbed Tenzo’s, he knew that he’d never be able to repay this debt. After Lord Third, a man Tenzo had olny known as an incompetent old guy, leading the village into the ground, at least according to Danzo, stepped in an officiall released Tenzo from his burden of being a vessel and nothing else, the first piece of humanity that Tenzo freely felt in this short life of his was his devotion to Kakashi. He’d always follow him, he’d always be by his side, he’d always be his support. Until the day either of them died and beyond.
***
When Kakashi was swaying a little on their way back to their apartments after they had cleaned up the bodies of the Uchiha massacre, Tenzo vowed that he’d always be right by his side.
They’d been called out at a late night and brought here, to the Uchiha district of the village, which was littered with dead bodies. While ANBU life was generally more enjoyable than Tenzo’s previous life in Root had been, it was not free of gruesome missions either. ANBU was the elite assassin and clean up squad directly under the hokage for a reason, and Kakashi’s team, that Tenzo belonged to, was the most elite of them all. So when the entire Uchiha clan had been murdered in one swift swoop in a night, they were called to the scene to assist with the cleanup.
Tenzo was still struggling a little with expressions and emotions, but even he could feel the chill when he saw the bodies of children and adults, old people and infants, going up into the hundreds. Bodies, everywhere. They began the clean up, they were told the village was not to see what had transpired once they woke in the morning, and so they hurried. No time to hesitate and give a proper burial, no time to stop and mourn the loss of many innocent lives, no time to hold on and think of who could be so heartless.
When most of the dead were burning on a mass fire, a very undignified way of burial, Tenzo thought, but orders were orders, they finally learned who was responsible for the carnage. “Itachi”, Kakashi said defeated, shoulders slouching forward so far as they only did when his humanity became too heavy for him to carry, “He killed them all and disappeared.” Itachi had been in their squad, he had been young, a child basically. He had been good and kind and a fast learner and it was almost impossible to think that someone like him was capable of such a horrible action. However, it was undeniable, because the only survivor had given an eyewitness account.
Kakashi was affected that it was the Uchiha that were murdered, memories heavy of a friend he had had as a child that had gifted him the sharingan eye he was now carrying, but Tenzo knew that his captain was also struggling with the fact that it had been one of his squad members that had done it. “You couldn't have foreseen it”, Tenzo said softly, one hand stroking over his senpai’s shoulder. “None of us could have suspected Itachi to be this monster.”
But Kakashi took it to heart, of course he did and so his eyes became empty and tired and stayed that way for a long time. Tenzo held him up, took him home, made sure he was showered and got some sleep and as he watched his senpai struggle against nightmares he thought of it again, the promise he had made to himself that he’d never leave him, that he’d always give his all to make him feel better.
***
When Kakashi left the ANBU squadrons, while it was a shock, Tenzo knew it was for the best. He vowed to himself that he would always watch over Kakashi from the sidelines, and be his shadow bodyguard when necessary.
In the years following the Uchiha massacre, Tenzo watched his senpai’s mental health deteriorate slowly but surely. He got more reckless, more violent, more strict. He stopped going out with his team, he stopped team bonding, he became an empty shell of the man Tenzo had been so fascinated with as a young boy. Kakashi was losing the thing that Tenzo loved so much about him: his humanity. IN fact, in those days, Kakashi reminded Tenzo more of a Root member than a normal Konoha shinobi. This was amplified by Danzo himself, who in every meeting they had with each other pointed out that Kakashi would have been a great agent for the foundation.
Tenzo wondered what could be done, mostly because he himself had a hard time working through his own emotions, but Kakashi had other friends, arguably better friends, that were watching him from afar and noticing the change Tenzo had noticed. They had known each other as children, even before Kakashi’s father had died, before his best friends and teacher had died, before Tenzo ever laid eyes on his Hound mask, and they were sure that there was a way to get the older version of him back. Tenzo heard them talk, he saw them speak to Kakashi, Gai even stopped him to talk to Tenzo directly, ask for advice and he was happy for his senpai, that he had so many people that cared for him, but he was also jealous, because it was something he could never provide.
And so, when Lord Hiruzen finally dismissed Kakashi against his will, Tenzo was both relieved and scared. This was good, Kakashi needed to get away from this place, he was not like Tenzo, he wasn’t only half human half experiment, Kakashi was a full fledged human and the cruelty and darkness of ANBU life should not break him. But there was also this fear that Tenzo could not completely quell, that Kakashi was now out of his reach, that he would no longer be able to stay by his side and help him in case that was necessary, that he could no longer fulfil his promise.
Kakashi came by the day his discharge came into fruition. He sat on Tenzo’s couch and looked miserable and angry. He did not know then that his friends had been detrimental in getting him out of ANBu, he did not know then that this choice in his life would ultimately be very good for him, that he would be so much better in just a few years, but Tenzo knew, or at least he had a feeling. That day however, he sat by his senpai’s side, listened to his complaints, told him, when he wanted to hear it, that the discharge was unfair, and just was trying to be a good friend. Tenzo wasn’t Kakashi's only friend, no, but he was the one who could understand how his life in ANBU had been like, how hiding behind the mask had been like and how hard it was to let go of that now.
Side by side with his long time friend, his saviour, Tenzo’s fear of abandonment subsided slowly. He remembered what he promised himself, that he’d always be there for Kakashi if he needed him and even in his new life, away from ANBU and Tenzo’s squad, he would continue to be a presence that could uplift and support Kakashi.
***
When Tenzo returned to a destroyed Konoha and heard that Kakashi had died and then been resurrected while he was gone, he vowed to himself that he’d never go away far from him again, at least not if he could help it.
Tenzo, now called Yamato by some that were not his senpai, was taken to trail Orochimaru to find his underground facilities now that the snake himself had been dead. Tenzo dreaded Orochimaru still from when he was a child, but it had been what he had been tasked to do and it was for the betterment of the children he was now looking after, so he left, leaving Kakashi alone in the village. They’d been separated for missions before, of course, but after Kakashi had been recently almost killed in his face off with the Akatsuki, Tenzo was hesitant to leave him alone again. Not that Kakashi knew any of his friends’ internal struggles.
Konoha was about 3 days behind them, they’d moved agonisingly slow to avoid possible traps or detection, when the numbers started appearing on Tenzo’s hand. Soft lines of kanji that insinuated that Naruto’s nine tailed fox was taking over his body. The fear crept back into him, the fear for his student, for the village that had just given him a normal life and for Kakashi, who would not have a chance against the fox on his own, not without Tenzo’s mokuton there. So he abandoned his work, hurried back, running and running, eyes on the palm of his hand for the changing numbers until they eventually disappeared, which left him dumbfounded.
He only realised what had happened when he arrived and looked at the crater that used to be the village he was sworn to. It was almost entirely wiped off the earth, only a few houses stood at the outskirts asif nothing had happened. People walked around in tents, back and forth, injured, crying, but he noticed instantly that there were no bodies being carried. An explosion of this size must have killed at least a few if not shinobi then civilians, but nobody seemed to be dead. That was when Tenzo heard the rumours, the mumblings of people around him, that all the dead had come back to life in some odd twist of fate.
Hurrying to find Kakashi he met Sakura, had her tell him that her teacher had in fact died a few hours ago and since been brought back to life, that Kakashi was now resting in his own tent. “His wounds are completely healed,” she said in awe. “It is like a miracle.” IT was, objectively, but Tenzo’s stomach felt like a pit and he wanted to throw up at the idea  of Kakashi dying while he wasn’t around. He ran to the tent Kakashi was in to convince himself of his health or not. HIs senpai sat there, back upright, a book opened in front of him, as if it was nothing but a routine checkup. Tenzo felt tears burning in the side of his eyes, something that had never happened to him before.
They talked, quick exchange of information on both sides Kakashi had fought valiantly, had made the conscious choice to let himself get killed only to be brought back by a reanimation technique that was somehow related to Naruto. The Uzumaki boy had always been a little bit Tenzo’s favourite, his enthusiasm and excitement was so infectious that he just couldn’t stop himself from loving him. Now he felt like finding the boy, pulling him into a strong hug and thanking him over and over again for his kindness, his bravery, his personality, because it had brought Kakashi back to him.
Seeing Kakashi bandaged up, imagining him broken up beneath a pile of rocks without anyone to help get him out or save him, Tenzo reminded himself how he had promised himself to be his bodyguard and how he had failed the task. He told himself he would not make that mistake again and silently left a tracking sapling under his senpai’s skin.
***
When Tenzo awoke from his Infinite Tsukiyomi dream and Kakashi was right there next to him, holding his back up, making sure he was alright, even though he was injured himself, that was when Tenzo vowed to himself that no matter how hard it would be, he’d always care for Kakashi as he cared for him.
The beginning of the war saw the two separated, no matter how much Tenzo had not wanted to be parted from Kakashi again. Naruto needed his help and Tenzo loved the boy, so he went with him, not because the mission demanded it, but because Tenzo wanted it. To help Naruto learn to use his power, become stronger, was a vital part of their success against Madara and his moon plan in the future, Tenzo believed deeply in that, even when part of the reason Naruto was shipped off was just to get him to safety. Tenzo let the tracking device on Kakashi, to be alerted at any sight of danger.
But it never came that far, instead Tenzo was the one who was in danger first. While Kakashi was preparing for his task as a commander in the fighting forces, Tenzo did his job making sure Naruto could learn and grow and he did a good job at that, until he was attacked. Suddenly encircled by a big snake, swallowed and taken away by a man called Kabuto, thrown to the ground and tied up, Tenzo found himself a vessel again, all rights of humanity taken from him, nothing but a mokuton user. Somehow they put him into a deep, dreamless sleep and used his body against his own wishes. To them he was nothing. It was like working for Danzo again.
He woke up later, how many days later he did not know, utterly disgusted at himself and the world around him, unable to grasp immediately what had happened to him. That was when he saw the light in the sky, the bright, shining genjutsu that reflected off the moon. Before he could understand what had happened or what was happening he was out of control of his body, back in a deep sleep. This time he did dream, however, a convincing, real feeling dream that while feeling oddly wrong also felt entirely correct. Kakakshi was there, he showered Tenzo with praise. Everybody was happy, nothing hurt. Tenzo was at Kakashi’s side again where he belonged.
Once the dream ended the reality flooded back into his mind. Tenzo sat on the ground, surrounded by other shinobi who were slowly waking up, finding themselves again, but he could barely feel his body. It seemed so strange and foreign to him, that he took several minutes to look at his fingers before he realised that it was actually him. He’d been used and then forgotten, he’d been left out. Nobody had come for him, nobody admired him, that was all just a genjutsu in his head. It shook him and for a moment he felt like throwing up. It was like all the humanity had been taken from him once that snake had swallowed him.
Then, before he could notice, Kakashi’s hand was on his shoulder. Tenzo recognised it by touch alone that it was Kakashi. “Are you alright, Tenzo?” Kakashi said and squatted next to him. Tenzo grabbed his hand, pressed it against his chest and Kakashi let him do it, stroking with his finger over Tenzo’s thumb softly to assure him that it was alright. There weren't many words spoken, Tenzo only learned about what had happened much later, but just their presence next to each other soothed Tenzo’s wounded soul. As if he suddenly remembered who he was under Kakashi’s touch, under Kakashi’s watchful eye. Tenzo was Tenzo again.
That was when he knew to name the feeling he felt deep in his heart, what it meant to follow Kakashi to the ends of the earth, to the edges of death and through a war. Later he would say it hit him like lightning, but in truth it had just grown slowly, steadily, and taken root all over Tenzo’s being. He’d always be with Kakashi, no matter where they’d go next. He had, after all, promised it to himself.
***
When he leaned over the desk in the Hokage office, one hand under Kakashi’s chin, the other hand pulling down his mask to kiss him, Tenzo vowed to himself that he’d always love him like this. All encompassing and devoted.
No, he hadn’t loved Kakashi immediately when he met him, it had started with admiration and adoration, a childish crush on an older boy that he just wanted to impress, that he wanted to be liked by. Slowly, very slowly though, this admiration had turned into more, a stubborn devotion and silent love, that Tenzo had barely noticed until it was already there. He wanted to be by Kakashi’s side, always, he wanted to be the one by Kakashi’s side. Tenzo learned that love brought jealousy, that it brought hurt and confusion as well.
Kakashi needed time, he’d been through too much during the war. Tenzo could only imagine how it must have felt like to see an old friend come back to life only to die again. Tenzo had his own issues of course, violent dreams and disgust at his own body, so while they spent tons of time together, lifting each other up, staying by each other’s side, they didn’t let whatever was sprouting between them bloom until they’d both gotten better. When they finally let themselves feel again, feel what was there, what had always been there it was an evening of light touches and soft spoken words and breathed kisses. They were careful, as if either of them could break apart if handled without care.
It shook Tenzo that Kakashi loved him just as much, that the roots in Tenzo’s soul ran deep in Kakashi’s too. Kakashi cherished Tenzo’s body when Tenzo could not and Tenzo loved Kakashi for all he was, his past, his present, his future, when Kakashi lost himself. They decided to be together, in any capacity possible and so Tenzo became the right hand man to the hokage. Finally, his wish was granted, his promise had come true, he’d be by Kakashi’s side all the time, at work and at home. With Kakashi’s hand close to his, Tenzo always felt like he was human, like it had been worth that he’d survived the experiment, like he was worth the abilities he’d been granted.
He remembered then, when he kissed Kakashi that day in the Hokage office, the day he had promised to follow Kakashi wherever he would lead him. He remembered when he decided to always try to help Kakashi no matter what. He remembered when he decided he would never leave him, when he decided he’d never let him get hurt and when he decided to be with him, no matter what the future held.
Tenzo smiled into Kakashi’s lips, letting their sweet taste sweep over his tongue into his soul. He felt happy, more than he’d ever thought would be possible. “I’ll always love you”, he said out loud, a little whisper between them that let Kakashi hesitate for a moment. Before Kakashi could ask why he had said that, Tenzo pushed their lips together again. It didn’t matter why, a promise was a promise.
He vowed silently that he’d always devote himself fully to Kakashi.

Haters can hate but reposting this as its own post so that it's not entirely under the long post cut. Re: KakaYama Week 2022
Soooo many great prompts this year! Too many for me to stick with my initial plan of just one, multichap fic. Here’s a quick preview of what you can (tentatively) expect from me. These are in various states of progress, so not all of them have summaries or even snippets yet. My hope is that I can get most if not all of them out during KkYm week. The two big iffy ones are Stripped Screws, which is still largely just a concept, and Working Title: Losing Tenzō, which has been a wip for so long that I can't say with confidence I will be able to get it where I want it to be.
Deep Summer in Willow Oak
AU, 7 chapter fic Prompts: Envy/Kindness, Gluttony/Temperance, Modern AU, Greed/Charity, First Times, Pride/Humility, Sloth/Diligence, Stolen Moments, Lust/Chastity, Vows, Wrath/Patience Rating: Explicit Summary: Dense summer air trapped under an unbroken canopy of leafy branches. No rush, no obligations, and certainly no cell phone service. Though it’d been fourteen years since he had seen it last, Willow Oak was almost exactly as Kakashi remembered it, even down to the ice cream selection at the local gas station.
This week-long vacation was supposed to be just the break he needed to clear his head so that he could return home to New York prepared to handle the mounting problems in his life.
But he hadn’t considered for even a moment that Tenzō would still be in Willow Oak. Tenzō, with whom he’d spent the countless summers of his youth, racing through the woods, floating in the lake, and sharing secrets in the dark. Tenzō, who had done a lot of growing up in the intervening years, it turned out.
And now, after a week of rediscovering their friendship and uncovering something new and promising, Kakashi is realizing that Willow Oak has problems of its own, and no matter how long he stays, the ones he left behind in New York will be waiting for him when he returns.
The Debt Collector
One-Shot Prompts: Day 1 - "You Deserved it" Rating: Mature Snippet: If he’d taken even a second to consider his words, Tenzō would have never have had to bear witness to his stuttering, incoherent admission. His feelings and failures spilling out haphazardly. His flaws catching on the harsh fluorescent light of the locker room, the reflecting flash enough to jolt anyone out of respecting him.
But Kakashi hadn’t been in control. He hadn’t considered. And Tenzō had stood across from him, twenty years old and forcibly disillusioned as Kakashi had burdened him with the worst of it.
To Tenzō's credit, he hadn’t let the disappointment show on his face. He had fetched a first aid kit and stood silently by Kakashi’s side as he had washed and bandaged his hand. When he had finished, Tenzō had asked him what he could do to help.
Kakashi had placed his bandaged hand on Tenzō's shoulder, squeezing once before letting it fall to his side again as he exited the locker room.
At that time, Kakashi had foolishly thought that would be the end of it. Sure, Tenzō wouldn’t see him as the bastion of surety that he maybe had before, but perhaps that would be a good lesson for him. Kakashi had been telling him for years, after all, to stop looking up to him.
Tenzō hadn’t let it go, though. And after every mission Kakashi had been subjected to offers for company, all of which he had rejected. And every new bandage the following day had been unmistakably scrutinized by Tenzō's watchful stare.
Until finally they were here. At some kind of tipping point.
Watch
One-Shot, Smut Prompts: Day 2 - Late Nights Rating: Explicit From the outline:
Tenzō scoffs. “Kakashi. No. The protocols are clear. Someone has to be keeping watch, undistracted, while anyone is sleeping.
"Hm. You’re right.” Kakashi says defeatedly, and Tenzō nods approvingly. His eyes scan the trees again finding nothing.
Two seconds later, the unmistakable sound of a zipper being undone reaches his ears. His head whips around to see Kakashi, hand disappeared down the front of his pants
“Senpai! What are you doing?!” he hisses
Kakashi’s right eye crinkles closed in a smile. “It’s like you said. The protocols only require one person on watch. You’ve got it. I trust you."
This reminds Tenzō of his duty and he faces forward again but he can feel that his cheeks are hot. He’s grateful for the dark. “So what?! You’re just going to…?!”
The log is shifting beneath him and Tenzō's brain provides plenty of possible explanations for what is going on next to him that he can’t block out.
“Don’t worry about what I’m doing. Stay vigilant, Kohai.”
Working Title: New Challenges
One-Shot Prompts: Day 4 - First Times Rating: G First Draft Snippet (unedited):
“Senpai, I’ve never used one of these before either. Should we maybe ask Yugao?” Tenzō hated to admit that Kakashi had called upon the wrong former team member, but he knew when to admit that he was out of his depth.
“That might be insulting to her, I think,” Kakashi replied. “To assume she would know because she’s a woman.”
Tenzō supposed that was true. “Maybe Itachi, then? He lives at home.”
“No. Kakashi said definitively. “I am not asking Uchiha how to use a washing machine.”
Tenzō understood, then, why he had been summoned. It was not because he possessed some skill set that Kakashi admired. It was because he was the person his senpai would be least embarrassed to admit this truth to.
Tenzō felt a bit deflated at this realization. But then, Kakashi trusted him. He knew that Tenzō's opinion of him would not be tarnished by this. And Tenzō would not let this show of trust go unappreciated. He would help. He would figure out how to use the washing machine.
“Okay,” Tenzō said, full of determination. “What do we know so far?”
The relief in Kakashi’s expression bolstered Tenzō's confidence even more. He watched as his senpai pressed a round button on the device, causing it to beep to life, green lights blinking on in various places.
“This turns it on,” Kakashi said.
“Yes,” Tenzō said, studying the display with as much scrutiny as he would a mission brief scroll. “I understand.”
“And then this dial…” Kakashi continued, spinning the dial in question a few times so that Tenzō could see the way the green light followed it, indicating the available settings. “You have to make a choice with it. But I don’t understand any of these options.”
Tenzō frowned, leaning closer to see for himself what the choices were.
“Tenz, there are six options, and not a single one of them is ‘wash clothes,’ Kakashi said, and the frustration in his voice told him that his senpai had struggled with this on his own for quite some time before calling in for reinforcement.
Tenzō pointed to the option on the far right “This one has the word ‘wash’ in it,” he observed.
“It does,” Kakashi agreed. “It says ‘hand wash’, though, which is…perplexing. I’m trying to avoid hand washing. Why is that even a choice?”
Tenzō had to agree. He reviewed the other options. Most of them were nonsense combinations of words as far as he was concerned.
“Permanent press…” he mumbled to himself. “Sounds somewhat severe.”
Stripped Screws
One-Shot Prompts: Day 5 - Soulmates Rating: Not yet rated Concept Snippet (unedited): Tenzō wondered what it was worth, one more try. Second chances were all well and good but at what point did the damage caused by failed previous attempts render a project untenable? He and Kakashi had tried to make it work countless times over the years. Would the pieces even fit together properly anymore? Were the screws not stripped bare by now?
Working Title: Losing Tenzō
One-Shot Prompts: Day 7 - Vows Rating: Not yet rated First Draft Snippet (unedited):
“I don’t need a team. I can go by myself,” Kakashi insisted, still standing at attention in front of the Fifth Hokage’s desk. His square shoulders and straight spine contrasting noticeably with Tsunade’s own hunched form.
“And what?” Tsunade demanded, tongue sharp enough to cut through flesh. “Get yourself killed before we can even get our feet under ourselves? I need you here and you know it.”
Kakashi gritted his teeth. “I know, but if I can find him, if you could have us both at your disposal-” “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. And we don’t even know where he is.” It was obvious that Tsunade was losing what little patience she had. Kakashi could see a vein in her forehead pulsating threateningly.
“I can find him.” Kakashi said the words confidently, though there was admittedly nothing to back them up. Where there was a will, though, there was a way. And Kakashi had the full force of the Will of Fire within him, if nothing else.
Tsunade let out a frustrated growl. “I said no, Kakashi! I expect better of you. Of all people you should know we have to put the village first! You should know how to deal with losing a comrade!”
“Tenzō's not lost! He’s still alive!” Kakashi found himself at the edge of Tsunade’s desk without having even consciously made the choice to break rank. His palms were pressed flat on the mahogany surface, the structure creaked in protest.
“He-he’s still-” Kakashi couldn’t get the words out. The sentences wouldn’t come together, their syntax unzipping apart even as he tried to articulate them. “They didn’t kill him- they- they took him, and-and that means they wouldn’t-”
A soft, manicured hand on top of his own quieted Kakashi’s rambling.

Tenzo. 10.8
Kakayama week :) But unfortunately I can't take part all week, I'm way too busy with other things (I'm sad but what can I do!). I will do 3 days tho, and this is the first one :)
Hatake Kakashi & Yamato | Tenzo (this is very platonic really, so I don't think it needs the shiptag)
2993 words
Ao3 link [x]
warning: one mention of underage drinking, as in Tenzo had one cup of sake to try it and nothing else.
for @kakayamaweek2022 Day 1: Birthdays & You deserved it.
Kakashi introduces Tenzo to many things after he has left Root. One such thing is the concept of a birthday party.
Because he had no recollections or records of his birth, Tenzo did not know when his birthday was. Not that he cared. For the first six years of his life he was stuck in either research facilities or tubes and that was already horror enough, imagining the passing of time by “celebrating” birthdays would have probably been too much.
From there he neatly went into the Foundation. Some kids there remembered their previous families or the clans they used to live in. Some remembered their birthdays and would tell you about them at random times if they felt like it. Those kids never survived long in the Foundation. Danzo-sama hated weakness and being excited about your own day of birth was one of such weaknesses. Tenzo did not have a birthday either when he was in Root.
Naturally, the entire concept seemed strange to him. Who wanted to celebrate their own day of birth, he’d ask himself. Maybe it was his harsh upbringing, the absence of love and support in his very early years, but he didn’t see birth as something that needed to be remembered every year. He knew he was growing, he could see it in mirrors and hear it when he spoke, but he didn’t need a dango or a cake to remind him of it. Who cares if he was 15 exactly or 14 and a half or older or younger. He was just who he was.
On top of all of that was that Tenzo was nothing but a vessel to be used. Birthdays were for humans, for people with families and personalities and existences that mattered. He didn’t matter beyond the scope of his abilities, beyond the fact that he had been in a freak accident that should have probably died young. No, Tenzo was not special enough to know or celebrate his birthday, so he didn’t even waste any thought to it.
Once he left Root many things stayed the same for a good while. He was still sent on dangerous ANBU missions that could be gruesome and leave him with nightmares. He was still expected to do his job flawlessly, even though the punishments were less severe. HIs skills were very much needed and often used. He was a vessel to be used, even if it was by a different master now and with a different captain.
That was the biggest change in the first place. Hatake Kakashi, the boy, who was almost a young man now, had been instrumental in not only showing Tenzo that there was a future for him outside of Root, that he deserved more than he already got, but that had also pulled the strings to get him out of the Foundation. Kakashi was his squad leader, he was his friend, he was his mentor, and Tenzo admired him more than any other person he’d ever met.
Gruesome missions and nightmares were so much easier to take with a person standing right next to you making sure you were ok. Kakashi showed Tenzo how to cook, Kakashi helped Tenzo with his fist laundry alone, Kakashi brought food and sweets and other Jounin into Tenzo’s life. He had gained so many new things just by being allowed to be part of Kakashi’s life. It was an immeasurable gift.
One day at a birthday party for a different squad member, Tenzo felt tipsy for the first time. He was almost sixteen and it was not like they had given him much alcohol to drink, just one cup of sake, but it had hit him like a truck immediately. Right there, shoulder to shoulder with his captain he mentioned off handedly that he technically did not have a birthday. At least not that they knew of.
“You don’t know your birthday?” Kakashi- senpai said over the noise, turning his head and looking at the younger man with his usual soft, grey eyes. It made Tenzo blush when Kakashi looked so fondly over him in this kind of way that he couldn’t quite describe. Kakashi had always had this magic over him, ever since they had met for the first time two years ago.
“No. I - I don’t think experiments get such a thing”, Tenzo replied shyly. Kakashi frowned as he always did when Tenzo made himself look like he wasn’t a real human worth of dignity.
“Nonsense,” he said back immediately, “Every human on earth has a birthday. It's your choice whether or not you want to celebrate it.”
Tenzo didn’t know how he could reiterate that he technically did not have one, or at least one he was aware of, so he just averted his eyes. It was once again Kakashi who spoke. “Don’t worry, the next birthday we will celebrate will be yours.”
It sounded like a promise, but Tenzo didn’t dare hope.
Kakashi was a good person, way too good of a person for what Tenzo deserved. He was a busy person too, someone who knew many people in many places and got solo missions to do even without his anbu squad. Then there were also the periods in which he would just disappear without a word, spent nights and strangers' houses or out of the village, the times in which Tenzo didn’t dare ask where he went or where had come from. So all things considered, Kakashi was busy and his mind full with his own worries, so Tenzo did not think anything would come of the half promise.
He decided to just forget about it.
But with so many things in life, when it came to Kakashi-senpai, Tenzo was completely wrong about everything. Maybe two days had passed when there was a knock on his door suddenly. Since leaving Root, Tenzo had moved into this small ANBU apartment that was provided to him. He didn’t own anything, so Kakashi had helped with that too. It was the height of summer, which meant that his little place warmed up more than a hot spring could and he was laying flat on his back in his bedroom, a summed up branch of leaves fanning air into his face, when someone was on the door.
Tenzo at first didn’t even think of the promise, at least not when he opened the door and Kakashi was there, a bag stuffed under his arm. “Senpai,” Tenzo said in surprise, “Have you said you’d come over? “
It could be a mission, or it could be that Kakashi hat just decided to show Tenzo another recipe to cook, especially considering that he had apparently brought a box of groceries. The silver haired man took off his shoes wordlessly and only after moving passt Tenzo into the apartment did he finally turn around: “Well, yes you should have expected me, don’t you think?”
He made it sound like it was the most obvious thing that could have ever happened, but Tenzo’s face was just a big question mark. “Hm? Did you mention -”
“Because you spend birthdays with friends”, Kakashi cut him off, “And today is your birthday, so you should have known i'm coming over.”
Tenzo’s face fell a little and he didn’t know what to say in response to that. The promise came back into his mind “Today?” Tenzo said, voice a little shaky.
“Today,” Kakashi nodded. “August the 10th. Happy 16th birthday, kouhai.” He handed Tenzo the package he had been holding, and when the boy opened it he noticed that it was a round chocolate cake.
Not often was Tenzo thankful for his rigorous training in Root, that kept him from showing emotions too much, but right now, when his entire body wanted to fall over like a house of cards and sob, he was clad that he could push it away. “This is.. the nicest thing someone has ever done for me.. '' Tenzo articulated his thoughts out loud and was proud that he still did not burst into tears, even when he felt like doing so. “Thank you.” He didn’t know what else to say.
Kakashi smiled beneath his mask. “It’s just what you deserve, Tenzo, after all the hard work you’ve done in the past year.”
Tenzo took the cake and walked over to his kitchenette to put it down. His hands were shaking, but he was still successfully fighting off the tears. No matter what his senpai was saying, he didn’t feel like he particularly deserved this more than any other person, this attention Kakashi had been paying him ever since they had met. He knew that his Senpai had lived through some tough times before they met, that he was maybe hellbent on making sure they wouldn’t repeat themselves, but still, this was too much.
“There are others coming” Kakashi said casually and sat himself down at one of the only chairs that the tiny room had to offer. “They’ll bring some more things to eat and then we will have a proper party.”
“N-Nonsense, Kakashi-senpai, you did not have to do that at all.” Tenzo’s mind was racing with happiness and embarrassment. Had his complaining about not having a birthday led to this? He hadn’t really tried to force Kakashi’s hand, he wasn’t the type of guy that complained about stuff. If they hadn’t given him that one sake cup, maybe he would not have even thought about it. IN his mind Tenzo swore to never drink alcohol ever again.
The other man looked over and raised a brow. “You’ve never had a birthday, as you said” Kakashi tapped his fingers on the table. “I looked into your ANBU records, the ones that exist anyway, and it seems that you have not been lying about not having a recorded birthdate. So I thought, Let's just do it tomorrow.”
He stopped for a second, then: “And I invited other people, who all agreed to come immediately by the way, because you’ve never had one. Technically, there are 15 birthdays to make up for in only one and I don’t think I can provide that, but I can at least make your first one memorable.”
Tenzo leaned against the counter, eyes looking everywhere but Kakashi. He could not deal with compliments very well, the root training too ingrained into his mind, but he could especially not deal with Kakashi compliments very well. There was something about Kakashi that just made them extra special, as if a compliment done by his Senpai was worth ten compliments from someone else.
“Tenzo”, Kakashi got up and walked over to the other. Tenzo tried to go further back, escape his towering presence a little, but only hit the counter behind him. “The whole squad thinks you are doing a great job working with us, and we all like you, as a person, not a vessel. It was easy to convince the others to come, because they like seeing you happy.” A pause as if he was considering his next words. “I  like seeing you happy.”
He could feel the warmth on his cheeks burning, but Tenzo’S heart felt so full and excited and happy in a way it rarely had before this. Every day Kakashi was showing him new things and taking him by his hand into this new world. One day maybe he would be able to repay that gift.
“Alright”; Tenzo said and his eyes moved into a smile, “Thank you for surprising me for my birthday. I like the 10th of August, square middle of summer. I am a summer child.” He went through it in his head. The idea that the only memory of his mother that he held onto like a lifeline was maybe a summer memory, when it was hot out and the cicadas were screaming in the background like a large orchestra.
“Sure, summer child. That is why you are always so upbeat and excited” Kakashi said a little sarcastically. “It’s almost like you are the most outgoing person in ANBU.” Tenzo punched him into the shoulder.
The rest of the squad arrived about half an hour later, by then Tenzo had thoroughly collected himself and adjusted into what he assumed was adequate for his birthday. Team Ro was not small, around 6 or 7 people led by Kakashi, but they were a constant revolving door as far as Tenzo could tell. People died all the time. So birthdays were celebrated bigger than maybe other squads did. Another year survived!
They brought more food, another cake, and sake for themselves. Kakashi looked with his stern captain's eyes at Crane who lifted the bottle out of the bag and said: “This is the birthday party for someone underage, put that away.” And if Kakashi said something in his Captain's voice, nobody objected. So this was surely not another afternoon in which Tenzo would try out alcohol.
What they also brought along was another stable of birthday celebrations: presents. Tenzo hadn’t even spared a thought about them, maybe because he had really never gotten one, other than the cake Kakashi had brought earlier, but when they started handing him things and patting on his back in friendship, he had to put all his willpower in not to cry again.
Most had bought things he could use on missions, bandages, special kunai, someone brought him wood works that he could have probably carved himself, someone else just bought him a plant for his apartment. Tenzo took all these presents gladly and placed them in front of him on his coffee table, admiring them like he had just found the treasure of a lifetime.
The best gift however, was given to him by Kakashi himself. Not that Kakashi would have needed to give Tenzo a gift, as he had already given him so much, but of course he did anyway, because that was just the kind of person Kakashi-senpai was. It was wrapped in paper sheets that looked like Kakashi had found it at any regular craft store in the civilian area of the village. When Tenzo what it was out of the paper he couldn’t hold a gasp back.
A new happuri, adjusted to his changed head and face. Lately he’d had a growth spurt and more and more had trouble with it not fitting quite right anymore. He’d loudly considered where he could go and get a new one, but then had never done it. Navigating the normal village world was still a little nerve wracking to him. But now here it was, a little big, but beautiful and shiny and a gift by his senpai.
Tenzo turned it in his hand speechless and then noticed that on the other side, the one that would link to the left side of his face, there was an engraving. Three little symbols and a date. Tenzo. 10.8. He rubbed his finger over it as if he couldn't believe it was there. Kakashi had engraved his name, his new name, and his new birthday. Seeing them both side by side on metal almost made it seem real. As if he was a real person that had always existed with this name and this birthdate.
They exchanged a look. Tenzo could feel the tears burn in his heart even if they did not burn in his eyes and Kakashi nodded slowly and then smiled. There wasn’t a word exchanged between them, because their faces said everything that needed to be said. Kakashi could see that Tenzo was touched and that was what mattered.
For the rest of the afternoon Tenzo’s eyes always went over to the happuri again, laying on the top of the gift pile. He didn’t know how long it would take him to grow out of this one, or if it would even survive that long. Even metal things could break on missions or get badly scratched, but still, it filled him with excitement to know he’d carry something Kakashi had picked for him from now on everyday.
It took a while for the first people to leave. Everyone was just too happy to sit around and eat cake and other sweets. Tenzo sat in the middle of his squad, all of them older than him, and listened to their stories, let them tease him and joke with him. He wondered if birthdays were always like that, happy and carefree and wonderful and how his life would have been if that fateful day he had not met Kakashi how his life would be now.
The sun had already set when the others left one by one. Tenzo was stuffed full with food and in a good mood, whistling like a child when he cleaned up the dishes they had used. Kakashi helped out with tidying up wordlessly, letting Tenzo whistle away in his own little world. Everytime Tenzo caught him in the corner of his eye he was smiling, which in turn made Tenzo smile even wider.
“I will go now too”, Kakashi said eventually, putting on his sandals at the door.
Tenzo walked him the two steps to the door as if he wouldn’t find his own way out. “Thank you for everything-'' he began, but was cut off immediately.
“I told you not to thank me. What I did today is nothing special and something every person deserves, especially if they are as hardworking as you are. I hope you enjoyed yourself, that is what matters.” Kakashi put his chin forward in a motion that showed he wouldn’t accept any discussion about this.
“I did”, Tenzo then said and opened the door for his Senpai. “I really, really loved it.”
Kakashi smiled. Even if you could not see his mouth he always looked good when he smiled. “Goodnight, kouhai.”
“Goodnight, senpai.”
Before he left Kakashi stood at the door and turned around one more time: “And oh, don’t expect me to come up with such a good gift every year from now on Tenzo. I’m a terrible gift giver, better get used to it.” Then he left.

for @kakayamaweek2022 Day 2: Late Nights.
It was impossible to find someone that he could distract himself with in the busy city of Konoha, at least while he looked the way he did, yes, but he needed somebody. Somebody, who was not disgusted when he was dirty, somebody who would let him in even if it was late at night and dark, someone who was always eager to help, someone who would please him if he asked for it.
Tenzo was such a person. No, Tenzo was that person.
Restless, Kakashi was walking up and down his apartment. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. He had not even taken off his shoes yet, dirtying the floor with what was underneath them without a care in the world. He did not spare a thought to the cleaning that would need to be done in the morning, to the fact that he was probably stomping and disturbing the people in the apartment below him. In fact, Kakashi wasn’t thinking any thoughts.
There was dirt on his ANBU vest at the front and dry blood. He should have taken this thing off hours ago, when his squad had finally been dismissed from duties to go and sleep off whatever horrors they had just witnessed during the night and early mornings, but Kakashi had done none of the sort, not taken off his dirty clothes, not showered or slept. Instead, he had gone in circles in his apartment. Back and forth. Without rest.
When he’d been woken up at night by a missive sent urgently, he had not expected the subject of the missive to be as gruesome as it turned out to be. Itachi, who had been in his team, a young, soft, reliable boy, had killed most of his family and relatives in what could only be described as a fit of rage. Murdered and murdered in cold blood, to leave nobody but his little brother alive. When Kakashi and the rest of his team arrived on the scene it was full of bodies and blood.
ANBU guards, Kakashi in particular, were used to gruesome sights and horrific missions. It was their job after all. But even with a strong stomach and a way to deal with all the horrors in front of their eyes, Kakashi could not fault others for throwing up or looking away. The sight in the Uchiha district was almost unbelievably traumatic. His squad had been asked to clean up the mess and Kakashi had complied, they all had, putting bodies on bodies on bodies and burning them. No time for the Uchiha custom burial for any of them. It was disrespectful in a way, but there were just too many of them.
Fact of the matter was, Kakashi had not been there. He had been there physically, but he had not been there mentally. The moment he had stepped in the Uchiha district and seen the dead bodies a rush of memories had almost entirely knocked him out. He used to be there a lot as a kid, he used to know Uchiha, Uchiha that had since died. And the thought that if they had not died as children they would have certainly died now, killed by the hand of someone Kakashi had mentored, was too much for him to handle.
So his body and his voice had worked on its own, while his mind had turned off to shut the unwanted feelings of anxiety out. Kakashi needed to be there for his squad, to be the leader he was appointed to be, but inside he reverted into the body of a twelve year old, losing too many people he loved in one sweep together.
After they’d been dismissed, Kakashi had not really wanted to go back into his apartment. Being alone with his thoughts right now was the worst thing that could happen to him. It would only lead him down a thought spiral he didn’t want to go down. He delayed as much as he could, offered more help to the hokage and his aids, but eventually Lord Third had put a grandfatherly arm on his shoulder and said: “Time to get some sleep, Kakashi” and there was nothing to do, it was an order after all.
Normally Kakashi would seek distraction in a moment like this. When he didn’t want his thoughts to drown him. It was easy to go downtown and get the attention of someone, someone that would take him home for a few hours to give him distraction. He did it all the time, pretty much since he was old enough to realise how charming he could be with his words. People also told him he was good looking, though he did not really believe any of that. Whatever the truth, people liked sleeping with the Copy-Nin, no matter where he went.
But today he was dirty and hadn’t even taken his blood stains off and just his appearance alone made it impossible for him to find anyone that was appropriate in a restaurant or bar. Not only that, he couldn’t go out in this state. People would stare and whisper and while Kakashi didn’t care about nicknames or other rumours they were spreading about him, he didn’t want those rumours to get to Lord Third. The last thing he needed was a forced break because his mental health wasn’t well enough for him to work.
His eye fell on the plant on the window pane. Mr. Ukki was written on it and Kakashi stopped to let his fingers run along the leaves. Tenzo had given it to him for his birthday and looked sternly. “You have to take care of it well,” he had said. “Don’t drown it but don’t let it dry itself out.” Overall terrible advice for someone who had never known how to handle plants, but Tenzo was still working on how to express himself. He was always eager to help, even if explanations could be a little hard.
That was when something crossed Kakashi’s mind like a flash of lightning.
He ripped the door open before he could change his mind and jumped over the rooftops away into the night. Tenzo, yes, Tenzo was there. Sweet, helpful, handsome Tenzo. He’d grown right before Kakashi’s eyes into a tall, good looking man. It was not like Kakashi hadn’t noticed it before, how Tenzo’s voice sounded when he spoke, how it vibrated and echoed, how his chest got larger and sturdier and his face more refined and manly. He was a man now and thought Kakashi had forbidden himself to look too much out of respect for his kouhai. Now, in this state he was in, with his brain shut off and his needs leading, he thought to himself that he was allowed to look. To do more than look.
Tenzo’s apartment was dark and when Kakashi looked into the living room it was empty. He hesitated for a second. He wondered if he might regret this choice, just for a split second, but then the darkness took over him. He wanted it, if it was good or not. He needed it, he needed nothing as much as this. So he knocked at the window, once, twice. It took Tenzo a moment to walk over, a kunai fast in his hand as if he expected Itachi himself to stand on the window sill, but when he realised it was Kakashi his eyes widened and he hurried to open the window.
“Senpai” he said with a gasp and then. “Why did you come here?” His eyes ran up and down Kakashi’s appearance and Kakashi knew he must look perfectly miserable, unshowered and full of blood, but he did not care. Instead he looked over Tenzo’s face, the hair that was still ruffled from sleep and a little too long for what he had lately, he was only wearing sweats and a shirt and Kakashi wondered when he’d ever seen him so casually. His eyes blurred
Tenzo softly reached out for Kakashi’s vest: “You should take this off.” Kakashi straightened his back to let Tenzo do the work on the vest. He wondered if Tenzo had ever undressed someone before, someone that was not him. He wondered if Tenzo had ever had someone in that way before. Months ago Kakashi had mentioned to him that he needed to get laid urgently, when he had found a stack of smut magazines lying around in his room, but had Tenzo taken the advice?
“Did you wash yourself?” Tenzo asked as he pulled the jacked off Kakashi’s shoulders. Kakashi shook his head so slightly that it was almost invisible and when Tenzo lifted a finger to wipe some dirt off Kakashi's face, the older man caught it with his hand as if it was a fly he needed to crush. Both men stared at each other, eyes to eyes and Kakashi could feel the heat inside him burning. “Tenzo” he said like a breath and leaned his head in closer. The need was overflowing him, drowning him. He needed it now, now, now.
Kakashi was fast, he was skilled, he knew how this worked. It was like a game he had played more than once. He wrapped a hand around Tenzo’s hip and drew him in, pressed himself against the other man's body as much as he could while taking his mask down with his free hand. He found Tenzo’s lips easily and pressed against them, leading the younger man backwards against a wall. Kakashi’s tongue forced its way into the other man's mouth and Tenzo replied, ever so the diligent student, ever so willing to please if that was what would make Kakashi happy. The fire burned hot now. It was like a form of self harm, a relief that could not be described with words. Kissing and fucking and all the sort, it was what let Kakashi truly turn off the world.
And Tenzo was a great partner. He let his body be moved from hands on back to hands in hair to hands in pants. He copied what he needed to copy, touched Kakashi the way Kakashi touched him and when the older man finally found his way down to Tenzo’s cock he found it hard and ready for him. Clearly Tenzo was enjoying himself too, Kakashi thought and took this to mean that he could continue what he was doing.
He was the one deciding where the dance lead and his body could do it without his mind’s occupation. In truth, Kakashi was only half present, completely in a fog of lust and need and pleasure that only such situations could provide him. Like a drug that instantly made him feel better. It wasn’t Tenzo specifically that did that, but it amplified the effect. That he could plug these sighs and moans of pleasure from someone he deeply cared about and not just a random person he met at a bar, somehow made it better.
They stumbled to the bedroom upon which Kakashi undressed Tenzo first and then himself. The younger man's face was flushed red and his eyes were wide in that way they usually were when he was nervous about something. But he did not complain, he did not say no, he let Kakashi crawl over him, touch every inch of him and let him lose himself too. They could both get over this day, the last night, together. They could both forget about the pain that waited for them on their next ANBU mission. Reality could wait at the doorstep.
Kakashi took a while to get completely satisfied, there was a lot on his mind that he needed distracting from, but Tenzo did not whine or complain and gave him everything he wanted. Sun was almost rising when Kakashi put his clothes on again, his breath going heavy and thoughts in his head spiralling. The guilt now crept in slowly, the fact that he had used someone that was so dear to him. It felt like a bitter pill on his tongue. He didn’t dare look at Tenzo when he left and so he just mumbled some generic goodbye message and opened the window again to leave.
At home he finally shed his dirty clothes and drew himself a bath. He felt better now, more awake than he had in over 24 hours. Maybe it would have been healthy to find someone else to fuck just for this night, someone that would not bring up questions later. But when Kakashi thought of Tenzo’s flushed face, the sounds out of his mouth, the way his body looked sweaty and pinned under him, then he could not help but think that he’d love to experience it again.
Sometime maybe, Kakashi thought. Maybe someday he would visit Tenzo again for a repeat.

Day 7. I'm writing this a week ahead of time and I'm very stressed out now, so this is short and terrible. Kakashi and Tenzo deserve better but I'm so burned out I need to stop. I'm sorry. Either way, Day 7.

for @kakashiweek Day 7: Ink
Kakashi and Tenzo talk about the day they got their Anbu tattoo.
Tenzo’s hair had grown long again. Kakashi had never met anyone whose hair was growing out as quickly as Tenzo’s was. He held the strands between his fingers as he brushed through them slowly, leaving the younger man to sigh at the soft touch. He liked when Kakashi brushed him and Kakashi liked brushing him, it was a mutual agreement.
They had just returned from a multiple week operation in the Land of Grass, where they had to infiltrate a military base and gain some intel. For that they needed to pose as workers in the base, get to know other people and through their trust earn more access to private areas. For this, they were separated for weeks, only able to do as much as nod at each other on the hallway. As if they were only strangers.
Kakashi didn’t constantly need physical affection to keep going, he had survived without it for years before Tenzo came around, but he was glad that this mission was behind them now and that they could be openly familiar with each other again. Maybe he had missed the closeness after all, at least a little.
The length of Tenzo’s hair was always varying, mostly because it grew so very fast, but Kakashi always liked it a little longer. Not only that, but their way of finally being honest with their feelings for each other was through Kakashi brushing Tenzo’s hair and braiding it, so since then Kakashi always loved doing it. It felt more loving and more intimate than anything else in their relationship.
Putting the brush down, Kakashi lightly traced the outline of Tenzo’s muscle on his upper arm. On his left, he ghosted over the ANBU tattoo that was burned into his skin in bright red. Kakashi liked the look of it, even if he had conflicted feelings on the ANBU as an organisation. When they were very close to each other, the tattoos shining on their arm, it almost seemed like a mark that connected them. Which in a way, it was.
“I got my tattoo right after I joined Anbu,” Kakashi murmured softly as he kept his thumb on Tenzo’s arm. “I was just 14 and deeply in grief. I forgot half of the whole ordeal because of the circumstances.”
Tenzo leaned over to kiss Kakashi’s fingers. “You told me.”
“I don’t remember why I chose the mask I am using or how I put on the uniform for the first time, but I do remember the tattoo. They brought me to another room and sat me down saying that I would be marked as an Anbu. When I asked why they said that this was tradition, but of course now I know differently…”
His future comrades had just tried to spare his feelings, Kakashi knew this now. Anbu tattoos were mostly used so dead bodies could be identified if necessary. Due to the nature of the job it wasn’t as unlikely that after your death your body might be submerged under water, stuck in ice or buried beneath ground. Other operatives that would find you at least would know you were from an ANBU squad, even if they couldn’t necessarily identify you.
Tenzo leaned against Kakakshi’s feet and put the head onto his knees. “Yes, it is not only aesthetic, especially not if you come from Root….”
“Right, I actually don’t know when you got your tattoo.” When Kakashi had met Tenzo, though he had still been a very young boy, he had already been tattooed as if he was part of ANBU right away. The foundation was a special case in which children became part of Danzo led ANBU squads at a young age, with no regard for their development as a human being.
“I don’t remember it very well either,” Tenzo said. “I was about ten, I think, when Danzo-sama took me to the side after training. He’d always train me alone, at least at first, as you know, and so it was also only me. When he led me into an empty room I was scared he’d do more experiments with me.”
Kakashi leaned forward to wrap his arms around Tenzo.
“Danzo had never done that, that was only Orocfhimaru, but I was scared anyway. He told me “Fear is for weak people” and he hit me..”
More often lately, Kakashi felt like it was time to cut that man’s head off. Maybe with an axe. But he was too involved in the village that Kakashi served, so it was out of his hands.
Tenzo leaned his head in Kakashi's palm. “There was a chair and he had me sit down on it. Told me I should relax as he rolled up my sleeve. I thought he’d inject a tube or anything like that, I was mad with fear….”
“You don’t have to relive this now, Tenzo, it’s fine. I’m sorry I asked.” Kakashi pressed a kiss to the other man's head.
“No, it's fine,” Tenzo said, “I want to tell you. I always feel like sharing things with you helps me in some way.”
They exchanged a look of warm appreciation  for a second, then he continued. “Instead he brought in  Badger with a needle and ink and I was tattooed. I remember thinking “This feels like a knife on your skin” and how weird I felt about it afterwards. It didn’t hurt, it wasn’t bad, but I was confused why Danzo-sama didn’t just tell me that that was what they were doing, you know? Why didn’t he just say to me that it would be the tattoo? It would have spared me a lot of fright.”
“You know why he didn’t”, Kakashi grumbled.
Tenzo sighed. “Yes, he was testing me, or punishing me, or trying to teach me something, but I wish he had just told me.” He paused for a moment. “At first I didn’t know how to feel, but then I quickly felt proud of being “branded” as part of the older generation of Root agents. I think back then I was just excited to belong somewhere, you know? Even if I was way too young to belong there.”
Kakashi remembered the first time he had met Tenzo, how young he had been, how he had always been righteous even then. If Danzo had tried to push the feeling out of him, he had thoroughly failed. Tenzo, as a person, had more feelings than most people Kakashi knew. He just portioned them well with strangers, but if you were lucky you got close to him. As soon as you made it that far, Tenzo freely and in large amounts offered you warm appreciation that was addictive
“I lost that later a little,” Tenzo continued. “Once Root was over and I realised that I had been abused there. I hated looking at myself for many reasons, that was when I first cut my hair too. And the Anbu tattoo was just an extension of that, I fear. I hated looking at it. I covered it up a lot if I could.
“I remember,” Kakashi combed through tenzo’s hair. There were these years around his mid teens in which tenzo refused to wear short sleeve shirts, no matter the weather or the mission. Kakashi thought back then that it was due to the way Tenzo’s body was changing during puberty, but now he knew the real reason.
Tenzo now looked up at kakashi. “I got over that too”, he said and then added, almost like a whisper: “because of you.”
”Because of me?” Kakashi chuckled. “Is it because it looks so great on my arm?”
The other man got up and sat down next to Kakashi on the bed. Both of them were now facing each other, Kakashi's arm wrapped around Tenzo’s shoulders.
“Yes, because of you.” Tenzo smiled. “You have it too and as such it makes me think of you when I see it.” He put his head against Kakashi. “And thinking of you is making me happy. Always.”
Kakashi didn’t know what to say as always when Tenzo was open with how he felt. Despite how he looked in public, Tenzo could absolutely be openly emotional if he wanted to, if he trusted and especially if he loved too much to keep it on the inside.
Kakashi on the other hand had more issues formulating his emotions. Instead, he let his actions convey his feelings. He leaned forward and they kissed lightly, softly, as if it was their first kiss, even though it was not. A kiss that said more than words could.
“I’m glad I have it too”, Kakashi whispered later, after all feeling like he needed to explain himself a little at least. “ANBU was not always a gift for me, but I met you, so I would do it again without hesitation.”
