After a financially inadvisable trip to Barnes and Noble this weekend I began the Graceling series.

So far I've enjoyed it immensely and two of my cousins are ready to start the series with me but since I, of course, finished way in advance so I have to share something with the void:

I read Katsa as a trans man.

The fact that Katsa’s eyes are beautiful, they’re often complimented and called beautiful. One eye as blue as the sky and the other as green as the Middluns grasses, before her grace made itself known people would see her eyes and wonder how her grace must be something beautiful. Singing or dancing, beautiful just like her eyes.

And then a distant cousin touched her leg when she was eight years old, calling her eyes beautiful and wondering what beautiful thing her grace would be. She reacted and hit him so hard and fast that he died instantly and no one knew what had happened at first. Those beautiful eyes suddenly were a curse, marking her as a killer. King Randa decided then that Katsa, who was only eight years old, would be a weapon that would make him feared.

Does it make it easier? Knowing that you have beautiful eyes when your grace is killing? No, it didn’t. At ten years old, her uncle sent her to publicly kill a man for the first time. For six years she followed Randa’s every order, her hatred for him and herself growing with every act of violence she committed.

Randa’s Dog, they called her. Lady Katsa of the Middluns, a ruthless killer for her uncle. She hated herself and feared her uncle to the point of just hearing him say her name could send her into a panic. Then she rebelled in the only way that she could.

She started the Council, secret meetings and missions and members throughout nearly every kingdom. Katsa couldn’t outright disobey her uncle, he was the king and even though she could take down every single member of his guard and his armies she would be banished from her only home.

Katsa didn’t stay that way forever, she disobeyed him. She was banished and she was free. And then she discovered that her grace wasn’t in killing-- it was survival.

Uhhhhh idk honeslty i can think of two right now and it's midnight let's go. I don't know I'd these nessiarily describe me, more resonated deeply with my innermost feelings I didn't even know I had at the time.

Katsa - Graceling Realm

First time I encountered a female protagonist who wasn't baby crazy and that resonated SO hard with 12yo me and I saw myself a lot in that and in even in the romantic aspects of the book too as its very subtle and felt real to me in ways most works don't. Katsa is somewhat aspec fight me.

Diana - Wonder Woman Warbinger

All the parental pressure and stuff ooooffff at the time I read this my mom would get mad at me for going to the washroom while studying or making tea/snacks. I just remember reading parts of this book and crying because I felt so overwhelmed and stressed like Diana, even though my issue was a B+ in French not the world ending.

Oh my god. So I'm finally reading Winterkeep (and yes I should post this to the book blog but I have a queue running for a different series I don't want to interrupt until I finish this) and I'm just 🥺 bc Liddy became a sailor 😭 she got away! She got her freedom after Cansrel 😭

#it was a throway line but i was sitting there like... 'i know her...but i cant remember...who?..... driving me nuts' #and i looked it up and found no results and then it hit me just now #HOW COULD I FORGET???? #fire's ex gf...i even have a bloody tag for her jesus christ (it's been about four years since i last re-read the graceling series okay) #and she got shipped away to a husband bc cansrel was being a dick and didnt like what was going on between them #i mean at least he didnt kill her or worse but i was so depressed about that for ages like locked away for loving a girl #so im so happy she's gotten freedom and to explore the world as a sailor 😭 #also yeah this is one of my top three book series and i used to re-read every couple of months #but then i got busy at school and got into reading again and swept away into different worlds (plus thought the series was over) #however graceling realm remains number one in my heart katsa fire and bitterblue were such a huge part of me and dealing with the past #it really started when fire said 'not all monsters are their fathers' and katsa had the courage to stand up for herself #and Bitterblue faced her past and learned its secrets and gained a life a little less strife with fear and towards healing #there's so much more than that but you've no idea how much i related to fire and bitterblue esp my dad is...like theirs #have the exact same love hate relationship as fire did where she hated him but couldnt help still seeing him as her dad #and yet was still the first lined up to bring him down #and i was telling a friend the other day how Bitterblue's timeline was near the exact same as mine just off by a year #we were the same exact ages and went through the same process/timeline oddly enough #and then with Winterkeep it jumped ahead so again we're still the same age as i read and abt at the same place #anyways dedicated a blog to them for years of course i love them #cant believe it took me a moment to recognize Liddy but then again unfamiliar role and i literally forgot Hava 😭😅 #also can i say reading from the pov of Giddon and a literal kraken is certainly odd and was a bold move to start off the book #was unsure how i felt about the foxes at first however i like them more now that they do indeed have confirmed evolutionary continuity #by that i mean they are a type of monster they do indeed influence minds they just have the presence to keep that a secret #not to mention it makes sense considering there's no reason for the keepians to be sus bc they dont have human/other monsters #that they know they need to gaurd from #they haven't been prey thus havent learned/know to gaurd their minds like the monsean court #anyways im around 230 pages in it's gotten GOOD now! like omg i thought the cat lady was the one keeping bitterblue not- #still dont know how i feel about lovisa tbh but anyways im rambling im just happy for Liddy #p
