Salvage Showcase: Blue Ink AKA Shinobu Togami
Now it's probably no lie to say that Danganronpa Togami is probably the most controversial to disliked entry in the Danganronpa Spin-off universe. Its earned a reputation in the fandom that, for the small few who know about it, for being utterly bizarre to the point that many write it off as being non-canon.
So one can imagine that when doing it for my Showcases, I’m also under a bit of pressure on how I should approach this. In my view, DRT isn’t nearly as bad as people think it is (that honor goes to Killer Killer) and deserves at least a fair shot against its criticisms and some misunderstandings about it. Of course, there’s quite the snag when talking about its original cast. Or rather, the fact that a good chunk of the major cast are essentially crossover characters from Yuya Sato’s Kagami Family Saga series and even then, when you also include those made (likely) for DRT, well, let’s just say they have quite the limited shelf life in the trilogy which makes talking about them pretty hard. Add together a few having some...baggage, and picking the first one just became an ordeal.
So after a lot of mulling over, I decided it was probably best to do the first Showcase on the series protagonist - Blue Ink, better known in the fandom by her name of Shinobu Togami. Primarily because she is the easiest to get a clear understanding of and, of the major developed originals, has less of that ‘baggage’.
...
....Also this would be the part where I post a character’s image but, well, she doesn’t have one. The DRT trilogy doesn’t have illustrations for the cast desgins so...I guess this shot of her Borges works? Sorta?
Tumblr media
DISCLAIMER: The following is talking about a character with history of SA. If this might make you uncomfortable, its probably best to overlook this one. I try not to mention it too much, but just to give you all a head’s up.
Summary
Blue Ink is a girl that is enrolled in Hope’s Peak Academy as the Ultimate Secretary and apart of its 77th class batch. Not only that she is the official secretary of Byakuya Togami, being responsible for writing his autobiography: Journey Under The Midnight Sun.
When the Despair Novel caused riots to break out all over the world, Byakuya was called by the Council of Global Controllers, an organization that truly ran the world, to help discuss what the fate of the world should be. Blue Ink was invited as his secretary to attend. However, what neither knew was that Sonia Nevermind, who was a member of Despair High School (AKA Ultimate Despair), had told of the location of the meeting which was in the Church of Bones in Prague. As a result, DHS operatives stormed the building, killing everyone by Byakuya (who got knocked out and clothes stolen off of him aside form his glasses), Blue Ink (who carried him to safety) Sonia (who wasn’t there) and Mukuro (who was there because she was a bodguard for one of the members...but like, he died so she kinda just left).
From there the World Domination Proclamation, started by the the Ultimate Imposter begins. The world has 24 hours to find either the pitful cattle in the world or kill Byakuya Togami. Failures results in ‘Byakuya’ taking over the world. This leads into a chaotic frenzy that has Blue Ink try and survive the bonkers event about to unfold with her Master and whatever allies that they can scrounge as literally everyone wants Byakuya, either dead or captured.
However, not everything is at it seems. First, its revealed that Blue Ink is really Shinobu Togami, older sister to Byakuya Togami via adoption. In addition, her full-blooded older brother is the Ultimate Hitman, Suzuhiko Otsuki, and both were participants in the Legacy Crown Championship. Or rather survivors of that incident.
According to memories of that incident, Shinobu was a part of fifteen participants meant to compete in the LCC to become the new heir to the Togami Congolomerate. In order to win, one must obtain the ‘reliance’ during the ten day time limit. The one who wins gets to become the new heir, while the losers are stripped of the name Togami and meant to go about normal lives. During the LCC, Shinobu isn’t just competing with Suzuhiko and the others, but with her younger adopted brother, Kazuya. Kazuya was adopted after Suzuhiko’s first hit job had him slaughter an entire village, but Kazuya, who was left alive by pure accident. But, things go awry as the participants start getting killed mysteriously one by one and the clashing of selfish personalities aiming for the throne is felt throughout the entire time.
The truth? As it turns out Kazuya was responsible for the majority of the murders, some in self-defense and others because the power had gotten to him. Due to a ‘strange power’ that he had -  a light saber from his hand. This is revealed to an injured Shinobu...all whilst Kazuya ‘loved’ her wounded body. Indeed, Shinobu (with Kazuya being recent during the LCC) has been on the brunt of being sexually abused by both her brothers, more of the case with Suzuhiko, who claims what they have is ‘love’ and they were together. A confusing matter pushed aside by Takaya Togami, the final antagonistic sibling who seeks to be the last sibling standing by lighting the castle on fire and hoping the others burn to death. During this, Suzuhiko carries out an unconscious Shinobu out of the castle...
Shinobu awakens outside the castle tended to by the winner of the event: Byakuya Togami, who disguised himself as Suisei Nanamura’s girl assistant: Polaris  P. Polanski. Concerning the other participants, they’re dead, except Kazuya and Suzuhiko, who have disappeared. With nowhere else to go, Shinobu passes Byakuya’s test to become his new assistant, thanks to her inability to care for Hope or Despair for her future. Thus, he has her remain in the family as his secretary and big sister. The wounds she recieved in the LCC cost her one of her arms, which replaced with a prosthetic, and an eye. For the eye, she received a gold mechanical one that she calls Borges. Borges can give her news, be a dictionary, and just in general be a hi-tech little assistant that she uses for her autobiography of Byakuya. As for her brothers, Suzuhiko reconnected with the Togamis as their hitman on standby (before he defected during the WDP) and Kazuya would reveal himself to be alive and apart of WHO as Orvin Elevator, Captain of the Infectious Disease Prevention Unit during the WDP. Both serving as antagonists that want Byakuya dead, to be with Blue Ink, and, well for Kazuya at least, desire to become Byakuya Togami. Something that Shinobu doesn’t want to make happen.
But...something is off about the entire ordeal. At least, Shinobu’s perspective of it is off. For example, the LCC she knew of...didn’t match up with another LCC where she recalled both her and Byakuya working together. Also, whenever she mentioned something like the Hasegawa Institute people seemed confused by what she was talking about or why she was referring to them as a completely different title. What was going on?
In truth, from a conversation with the creator behind Borges and its AI, a man known as K, she learns that Borges itself had been showing Shinobu unreality. By feeding into Shinobu’s desire to see Byakuya as a God, as well as taking characters and ideas from various novels, like the Kagami Family Saga, Borges had been showing her fake conversations, information, memories, and even overlaying real people in real time with characters from those novels. It isn’t until Borges is destroyed prior to talking with K that Shinobu has the chance to gradually experience the truth of her situation. To forge her own path without the aid of Borges and even giving up her Ultimate talent.
But that wasn’t the end. During the climax of the WDP, where she finally reunites with Byakuya (who had been hiding out in Prague Castle with the Imposter), she learns the full truth: she...wasn’t Shinobu Togami, the original ‘died’ in the true LCC. She was the Kudan that people were seeking after, the ticket to the Togami Family’s Prosperity with her predictions. Or rather was and she hasn’t been for years now after Byakuya had become the Ultimate Heir.
Byakuya intentionally had Borges installed in her to erase memories of her prior life and of the original Shinobu’s identity. As means to get rid of the prophecy element since to Byakuya that was cheating, a sentiment Despair High School agreed with. Regardless of her former life, Shinobu chooses to stay with Byakuya, her own journey at this point giving her the means to tackle reality head on.
Ultimately, both Byakuya and Blue Ink are given a choice. If Byakuya chooses to rule the world, Shinobu dies,. If he refuses, Shinobu will have her mind wiped again and forced to live out a new identity away from Byakuya whilst everyone of the 78th class that came to Prague (like Toko Fukawa) would have their minds tampered to muddle the incident and erase Shinobu from their memories. Byakuya refuse and, before both loses their memories, Blue Ink gives Byakuya memento of her: a blue fountain pen he keeps in his pocket. Blue Ink blacks out after ingesting the drug.
With hope that, eventually, she reunites with Byakuya in a world conquered by him!
Personality-wise, Blue Ink shares similarities with Toko Fukawa, with her most dominant traits being her severe reverence and loyalty to Byakuya, who she considers to be a God. This love manifests between almost akin to a religious fanatic, to a supportive big sister to, well, someone whose clearly in love with him (incest runs deep in Ink’s little family huh?)
She is more open and emotional that her arrogant and reserved brother, though it's been observed she’s colder than people realize. It's implied that the abuse she suffered under Suzuhiko eventually lead to her stop caring about herself personally, no matter what good or bad fate awaits her and she sort of lives with a deattachment towards life unless it involves someone she really loves, like Byakuya. She is without Hope or Despair, but throughout then ovel feeling this way does gradually bother her. This also means if a horrible fate would happen to someone else, she can quickly move from it without issue.
Concerning back to her lack of care towards herself, in a similar vein to Peko, she doesn’t see herself as ‘person’ but rather Byakuya’s property - a writing machine made manifest. Much of her development in the novel is learning to become her own person and see life for how it truly is beyond what a machine wants to tell her. Thus leading to a resolution where, while she doesn’t give up her devotion to Byakuya, she finds the strength to accept reality for what it was and move forward to a Hope created by her own original style.
 Rundown
Shinobu’s character in DRT reflects on its central theme of ‘Truth and Lies’, or rather ‘Escapism/Unreality vs Reality’, if better to make it more distinct than to what V3 was going through with its ‘Truth and Lies’. With this theme, its represented in three parts with the, what I’m going to refer to them at least, the Unreality Siblings (Shinobu, Kazuya and Suzuhiko). Shinobu represents the ideal - a previously ignorant escapist being confronted with the truth and willingly choosing to accept it. The Accepter, to be brief about it.
Shinobu starts off as obsessed with Byakuya and constanlty using Borges for assistance. Throughout her journey, more and more of her fantasy gradually becomes unravelled to the point she is questioning why some people don’t know who some others were or why her memories weren’t lining up. She becomes confused, agitated and scared. This leads up to two important events that make her ar truly great.
The dinner with Hiroyuki that has her confronted properly with the idea that what she has been relying on isn’t actually as helpful to her as she thinks and her meeting with K, who serves as a harsh, yet important, teacher of the dangers of becoming lost in her own fantasies and assures her that she’ll be able to eventually see reality for what it is - as her own person this time. She becomes self-aware of the truth by her own notice, yet its with guidance towards what truly is at fault and giving her Hope of being her own individual without her ‘crutch’ that what allows her to be firm in her resolve to embrace the truth.
What’s more is that learning about her true past doesn’t throw in her in an existential crisis anymore, but she is able to take it in and weave it with her own tempered passion for Byakuya.  It’s a legitimate message with her against overelying on people or technology, forming your own identity and, while you don’t have to drop your strong interests, you can at least enjoy them in a healtier mindset.  Which is a far better conclusion than either Suzuhiko or Kazuya (those two are going to be a doozy...)
In many ways, with these traits, she is reflective of Toko Fukawa - writers who, after a horrible childhood past, comes to obsess over a guy who...isn’t the humblest person around, seeing him in a grander light than they would ever see themselves. Likewise, their arcs are about, while not getting over such a guy, realizing they were other avenues in life they haven’t given a try or were misguided by, with Toko finding her own goals and wants with her trusted friend Komaru and Ink coming to terms with trying to carve out her own path after seeing nothing but lies for a good deal of her life.
Personal Thoughts
Blue Ink is definitely one of the most underrated protagonists of the Danganronpa series and honestly one I feel many should at least read DRT to know more about. Similar to Komaru or Yui, Shinobu works well in bouncing off of Byakuya as his loving and loyal secretary that he actually gets along with, because Lord know Togami needs some more of that......well, not really healthy (get to that in a sec), but just positive bonds in DR. Plus, she actually does work well in bouncing off the other castmates of DR1, such as her rivalry with Toko to her banter with the Imposter back when she thought they were Kazuya and even once it was all over.
Though, there were a few hiccups. I did find it disappointing how quickly she affirmed her loyalty to Byakuya even after learning that he willingly chose to erase her first personality and memories. Would have liked for her to maybe instead have her, while not happy with it, she wants to give Togami another chance. Not because of her infatuation with him or ‘because he’s a God’, but because she has faith in Togami being more benevolent than how he acts. But that’s just personal preference.
Will also say concerning the....Unreality Mess Triangle with Ink, Suzuhiko and Kazuya and their baggage I wish it involved more outsiders, particularly of the mainline cast variety, reacting and interacting with it? A lot of time Ink is spent with her brothers apart from everyone else and it feels too isolating, in a sense? These three are at their best when they’re interacting with the mainliners, such as Ink witnessing the threeway ‘Byakuya’ discussion during their flight or watching Suzuhiko and Genocide Jack fight. Heck, this also goes especially for Ink herself being away from the other prior DR casts so much, which happens suprisingly a lot, especially in volume 3. While occasional one on one conversations are great, ultimately people are likely there to read Togami and his interactions with the main protag and both old/new casts, not just see the protag and the new cast, but little of Togami or the old ones. There needed to be a better mix of it I feel.
...Oh, right the incest too. Due to DR3 and UDH desensitizng me to this, I can say that Ink’s crush on Byakuya is something that I’m personally numb to at this point. Especially since the trilogy is determined to make being numb better than what the Hell was going on concerning her brothers. Also helps, it doesn’t come up as much as her fanaticism to Byakuya and she has more traits going for her to help balance it out.
But those are minor nitpicks, Overall, she’s just plain fun to read about and def think people should give her pov a try. (think about how many protags in this series can say they legit nearly choked out a hitman with one arm!? That’s kickass!~).
With that that’s the first DRT Showcase down! Next up is for the Minor Spin-off Squad AKA Kirigiriso/Ultra Despair Hagakure/Makoto’s Worst Day Ever. Their entries are too short and not enough cast members to give them their own distinct sections so, yeah, they’re all lumped together. To next time!

On ‘Danganronpa Togami’ also, I would be of the viewpoint that most of what happened in the present in terms of actual events not merely spoken of was real (unlike the interpretation of certain others) and that the way Borges worked was essentially like a more advanced versions of the vision filters from ‘Black Mirror’, replacing what was seen/heard by Blue Ink with regards to the identities of (some of) the people who were being encountered then being obscured/replaced with others if they seemed to contradict what Blue Ink’s reality (as Byakuya’s biographer) was supposed to be, and what words they were saying. That what can be guaranteed to have been real 100% would be those scenes Borges wouldn’t have had the right context to in order to properly filter it off into something else, like most of the Ultimate Despair encounters, Byakuya calling Junko, the brief Mukuro encounter, Toko showing up and Genocide Jill going into action, etc., as well as any information given by characters in the games (like there being 15 to 108 Togami siblings). One particular fan theory building on this concept that I like being that the real Shinobu who died was the actual decapitator in the island flashbacks, Borges having switched around the identities of the major players in terms of what they did in presenting a facsimile of the past for her to look back upon. And that while the Ultimate Imposter may very well have been one of the many Togami siblings, it didn’t matter anymore to his present goals with Ultimate Despair, the ‘Kazuya’ Orvin made that way basically to see how his original plan might have gone if he hadn’t met Junko. It was a trilogy that seemed to assume one had played the other games/read the other novels, that its readership would understand what certain things would be referring to, even if not explicitly spelled out.
What would be your thoughts on the trilogy?
If you want a very short description of my opinion of Danganronpa Togami, it's basically this image.
Tumblr media
I can't help but think that maybe if i read the Kaguya Family Saga novels or if there were just better full translations, maybe i would have liked Danganronpa Togami more. But the truth is, I REALLY don't like Danganronpa Togami. It's honestly one of the worst media experiences I've ever had 😭
Tumblr media
My biggest gripe is that i hate that any flaw with its storytelling can be exempt by just saying "well actually it was all fake and you don't know what's real and what isn't" because that just makes it worth nothing, if the bad stuff can be exempt then so can the good stuff. And it is HEAVILY implied that a majority of the novel is fake, the themes rely on it, it's the main point of the novel. And if they were real, that would make it actual dogshit and also just noncanon because it would contradict Danganronpa 3 and Zero.
I genuinely can't tell if I really like the twist or if I really hate it because it makes so much sense in retrospect but getting to that point was an actual pain to read, and the implications of it are also so baffling.
There's so much god awful stuff in this book like Kazuya and Suzuhiko, the weird recurring incest stuff, Byakuya's really bad and flanderized characterization, and all the absurd stuff that happens like Sakura projecting herself or the despair novel but it's all dismissed by the "it was all made up" thing which is so awesome but so stupid at the same time. If that twist was in literally any other novel I might like it but it's handled so poorly that I end up despising it.
Basically, I don't like this novel. And while parts of it matter, for the most part it can be easily dismissed because most of it was canonically made up.
I shouldn't have to read a completely separate book series to enjoy this. There was no need for all of the gross and poorly handled incest and sexual abuse stuff. Byakuya's characterization just makes him insufferable and his entire motive and actions is kind of gross. And to top it all off, NONE of it mattered. It's not like V3 where the events had an effect on the people involved or changed something, the book literally just describes it as another weekend in Byakuya's life and it's all forgotten and most of it didn't even happen. I sat through all of that for none of it to even matter. Basically what it results is self nullifying nonsense that means literally nothing as none of the events happened.
I'm sorry if you like this trilogy, I just can't find many positives. I went in thinking that maybe the hate for it was unfounded, I wanted to like it. I mean, I think Danganronpa 3 is great, I found redeeming qualities in Danganronpa S and Ultra Despair Girls. So if anyone can find something to like in an unpopular piece of Danganronpa media, it would be me. And honestly volume 1 wasn't even that bad, I remember thinking that it was kinda dumb but harmless. But my experience with Danganronpa Togami can best be described as a decent into madness. I have a lot of issues with it, but that's just my opinion.

As someone who likes a lot of the concepts presented by DR:T, I'm glad someone else agrees that it was kind of a letdown on so many aspects.
Fortunately, in the novels themselves, they do explicitly say that it's almost all a fabrication of the AI in Shinobu and Kazuya's minds in an effort to make Byakuya out to be some savior.
My city and my Togami OCs now that all happen to have the same name and general basis but with more complex motivations and personalities outside of paralleling THH characters.
Oohhh, cool! I myself mostly focus on Byakuya in my backstory rewrite, so I can't say I'm doing the other Togami kiddos justice. Like, it's purely about Byakuya and hom only. Though, Kijo appears to.
It's not that I don't like them, there's just not a lot of reason for me to give them devopment, so it's great to see somebody else doing that!
That said, the Togami kids do all have different personalities in my fic. They're all linked to a THH character- that was one of the only things I liked about DR:T and more parallels lile that will appear- but not all of them want to become heir.
Some are nice, some are mean and some just simply don't care... And none of that really matters to Byakuya. Like, he just wants to win. The only siblings important to him are the ones that could be a threat.
But it's cool to see that somebody else is making them in full characters! They deserve it... and if I wasn't already made multiple fics, I might've written something about them already!!

(To Mod) In your opinion, how much of a disaster a KG would be if these are the participants: Byakuya Togami, Nagito Komaeda, Kyosuke Munakata, Kokichi Ouma, Takumi Hijirihara, Tsurugi Kinjo, Kanade Otonokoji, Shozo Asayoru, Seishi Yodogawa, Maya Canzanilla, Jane Holmes, Teruka Tawaki, Damon Maitsu, Kazuya Makishima, Storm Maverick and Matta Gyalusetsu.
//Just THINKING about this is giving me a headache!
//The way I see things, Byakuya, Matta, Jane and Damon are the most reliable of the group. Yes, they've got issues, but there's no denying they're smart, perceptive, and more on track with the moment than everyone else on the list.
//Same can be said about Nagito and Seishi. Nagito can really be helpful, but only if he wants to be, and that's where the issue lies. If he thinks the others can use their talents and hope to solve the crime, he won't lift a finger. Seishi on the other hand, would kind of be the game's David Chiem, kind of like he is in the original ReBirth, being the deuteragonist up until he's revealed to be Zen Katagiri (assuming this is Zen Katagiri and not the real Seishi Yodogawa, because then he'd be the most mentally composed person there.)
//Assuming Munakata acts similarly in the game to how he does in DR3, he'll go down quick. He'd have more than enough reason to end the game by killing everyone himself, since they're all strangers to him. The only thing I see stopping him is the games rules, or if the others band together to apprehend him.
//Kokichi, Shozo, Maya and Kazuya are the one's who cause problems in the trials for playful or stupid or selfish reasons. Maya I feel could be a distraction unintentionally, because she is easily the dumbest person on this list, and couldn't really contribute much to anything except wanting to make the others burst into flames, but she is the only one of the four I just mentioned who isn't a total asshole and actually means well.
//Hijirihara and Teruko would probably both cut themselves off from the others, Teruko for her own safety, as well as everyone else's, and Hijirihara because he just likes isolating himself. At the same time though, I do see Hijirihara being the Ultimate Detective of this Killing Game because despite his craziness and the unfortunate intricacies of his character, he is still a very perceptive guy and a great sleuth. Teruko also wouldn't hesitate to cut a bitch if she was given good enough reason.
//Kanade and Storm are just straight up NOT to be trusted. The both of them are complete and total psychos, and with no Hibiki around, there's no telling what the former would do in this sort of situation.
//And lastly, Tsurugi would be a mix of the two - a problem solver AND causer. I imagine he would have a migraine when the secrets about everyone comes out because the vast majority of this cast are criminals. (Matta and Zen are assassins, Nagito is technically a terrorist, Kokichi is a "public enemy" and Hijirihara, Kanade and Storm are all serial criminals. That is literally HALF of this cast.)
//It's exactly what you expect it to be. Chaos incarnate. And it'd be a surprise if any of them lasted a day.

In regards to your reply to the ask of another anon:
"Furthermore, when we finally learn about "The Most Despairing Event in the History of the Togami Family" via Danganronpa Togami Vol. 2, I was disappointed that we never see Byakuya do anything so twisted and ruthless. Instead of showcasing where he fostered such a cutthroat attitude, we're shown that his ultimate victory over his numerous half-siblings was about as lazy as possible."
I find it interesting as i personally always assumed that the entirety of the flashback itself WAS another attempt at what we saw Byakuya do to Syo by tampering with the crime scene but on a much larger scale, seeing as not only is it confirmed later on that, at the very least, the entire second half of the flashback and Kazuya's confession were forgeries (mainly hinted at by the fact that Chapter 3 of Volume 2 is specifically referred to as "Unreality Side" as opposed to the "Extraordinary Side"), but we're also given pretty blatant hints time and time again that Byakuya at least was deep into the conspiracy going behind the scenes (with the Kudan deliberatly writing the "prophecy" so that Byakuya Togami is the one to stand victorious and Nanamura well... Being Nanamura, lot of evidence piles up on him having rigged the game beforehand) and may or may not have comitted some of the acts by himself (the novel making a pretty clear point on how no one was able to find the weapon used to stab Wasuke at the start, only for the ending of Chapter 3 to show how Byakuya, while disguised as Polaris, was carrying a pair of shears with him that he uses to cut off his hair). Its something i find weird in regards to the way most of the fanbase consumes this book, but to me at least it was always pretty set in stone that Byakuya went out of his way to gaslight Blue Ink into rewriting the book and convince herself that Kazuya was the murderer while prying on Shinobu's pre-existing insecurities brought upon by the confrontation Nanamura had as he named Kazuya as the suspect. The main difference here being that Byakuya is smart enough as to not leave any decisive evidence pointing torwards his true actions at that time, despite the novel leaving around hints so you can come to that conclusion. ...Also the fact that psychic lightsabers are very much not real, so there is no way that Kazuya could have been giving an accurate account of events as he says that he killed everyone.
Note: This is a follow-up to this ask.
Asker, you seem to know more about Volume 2 than I do. Last I checked, we English-only plebes are stuck with merely some lengthy summaries of Volume 2, but no complete translation. And the summaries don’t make any mention of some of this stuff.
**SPOILERS FOR DANGANRONPA TOGAMI VOLUMES 2 and 3**
As you’ve noted, Kazuya does confess to the murder of Yasuke. And he claims to have done it with his light-beam projection weapon — the silly psychic lightsaber which we eventually learn (in Volume 3) does exist, albeit without any kind of superpowers at all. It’s just a mechanical trick device he wears up his sleeve and extends as needed. Which doesn’t preclude it from being a murder weapon.
So it’s at least possible that he killed Yasuke with his fake lightsaber device. I never caught onto or considered the possbility that Byakuya might’ve used his scissors to sneakily stab Yasuke — but I really think the narrative would’ve called attention that possibility instead of just mentioning the shears casually once time and then ignoring them. (Or maybe it did? And the summary failed to note that??) Furthermore, if we fully embrace this scenario, are we then assuming that Kazuya legitimately believes he killed Yasuke, or do we assume he’s fully aware that Byakuya was the real killer? If it’s the former, then Byakuya would’ve had to do it from the back in order for Kazuya to not know he did it, right? Which would create a very different kind of wound. And if it’s the latter, what purpose does Kazyua have for lying about it? Just trying to appear to be more in control than he really is?
I guess that, ultimately, I’m just saying that everything you said may or may not be true — but alas, I have no way of knowing. :-/ I continue to hope that one day, one of these friggin companies translating light novels will see that there’s money in DR!

Salvage Showcase - Suisei Nanamura
Sorry for the longer delay with this one! To make up for it, for the DRK entry and this time its one of the more flashier supporting characters in the DRK/T adventures: Detective Suisei "Allegro Agitato" Nanamura!!
Tumblr media
Summary
For the sake of things. I'll cover DRT's portion first, given its smaller length and earlier 'placement' in the timeline (I'll get to that later on).
Suisei Nanamura is a detective registered in the Detective Library as part of only 20 Double Zeroes to ever reach that rank, being 900, specializing in homicide. He's been in about four prior Duel Noirs before the event of DRK2. In addition, he's also open to being hired by rich clientele. One of his being a member of the Togami Conglomerate.
During the Legacy Crown Championship, on the seventh day of it, Suisei would be hired by Mitsuzo Togami to solve the mysterious murders that were plaguing the competition, rapidly dwindling the number of contestants still alive. While outsiders weren't necessarily allowed, when the housekeepers took the only boat back to safety, Suisei and his assistant, Polaris P. Polanski, were stuck there and allowed to do their investigation. Suisei would interrogate the survivors and eventually pressure Kazuya into showing him around for the more reclusive participants, Suzuhiko and Saburo. Activities that lead Suisei into being told more of Kazuya's dark past involving the Kuchinashi Vilalge Fire (which had almost the entirety of its population slaughtered by Suzuhiko) and how he was adopted into the family (by being the only survivor on accident), likely as another 'chip' to use in the LCC. Though Suisei also theorizes that Kazuya doesn't even count and there was another participant in the game that was hiding.
On the eighth day, Suisei would put out a fire that apparently claimed the life of Asa Togami, though he was doubtful on that aspect. On the ninth day, when the surviving twin Yoru was found beheaded, he declared the culprit was out of luck and declared that he knew who the culprit was.
In the cafeteria, where most of the survivors were gathered, he went through the various mysteries and details of the case: from how Asa was really a doll that was burned instead of a person in an attempt to win the LCC, how he believed there were only three murders (the one who killed Wasuke, Ichiro and Yoru) and there were only three people who could have really done it: Suzuhiko, Saburo and Kazuya.
Ultimately, he declares Kazuya as the culprit. Suzuhiko lacks the heart to win the LCC and his pride won't let him kill without his knives. Saburo had recorded himself non-stop, singing naked and eating snacks to verify his alibi. Kazuya has both a strong motivation to win and no alibi to speak of. Despite the kid's attempts to defend himself, its when Suisei had Polaris bring out Yoru's severed head that was found in Kazuya's room that ends up making Suisei 'the victor' and Kazuya is sent to the dungeon....
Up until his client, Mitsuzo is found hanging in his room - dead. With his client dead, and only half of what he got upfront received, Suisei decides to leave in a helicopter he called on. Before he leaves, he states that, given the situation, Takaya (who was the one to actually kill Mitsuzo) would likely be the victor and congratulates Kazuya for his early release. What neither boy realized was that Suisei's assistant was still on the island...and near the tenth day would become the new Togami Conglomerate heir as Byakuya Togami.
Because of his actions and attitude, Kazuya hoped for Suisei to eventually be done in his by ways. Concerning Suisei's role in DRT, it happened in an unreality flashback created by the Story AI installed in the false eye of the main point of view characters in DRT. Thus, its very likely that Suisei didn't actually attend the true LCC nor did these characters actually meet him.
In the DRK entries, Suisei makes his appearance following receiving a request from Yui Samidare and Kyoko Kirigiri, the girls looking for help from any available Double Zeroes about the Duel Noirs and Victims Catharsis Committee. This would lead to Suisei taking them to dinner, explaining whatever information he knew (like a number of Double Zeroes disappearing in their investigation of the VCC) and eventually inviting both to accompany him to the next Duel Noir he would be invited to as the detective: the Norman's Hotel Murder case. (And also dumping the bill on the girls, but that's neither here or there at the moment).
At Norman's Hotel, Suisei and the girls would be involved in the Hotel's auction gimmick. Every day the ten participants would gather to do an auction, using the hotel sponsored money to see who would win the Detective's Right. Winning that Right would allow someone to take the Detective role of the Duel Noir for the night, and since the Culprit of the Duel Noir can't kill in front of the Detective, it grants them immunity from being killed by the Culprit. Alongside, a bonus of temporarily getting a master key that can allow them to leave their locked rooms at night and, potentially, free the others as well.
Suisei was the winner of the first auction, betting all of his money in order to obtain it. However, he would be unable to stop the Culprit from going about and killing their first Target: Akio Chage. With his money gone and the days passed, it appeared to Yui that Suisei, depsite his high rank, was also stumped on who it could be...
That is until the fourth day, when her investigation with Kyoko helped revealed the mechanics on how the Culprit murdered their Targets. One of these details being the mystery of where the money of the deceased went. While Yui assumed they were taken by the organizers, that was only true for Uozumi - the sacrificial lamb of the game. As for the rest? Well, there disappearance was caused by the prior Detectives taking the money to use for themselves.
In truth, Suisei has already deduced who was the Culprit of the Duel Noir, but instead of exposing her - Sae Yozuru - as being the murderer, he wanted to instead use the Duel Noir in order to amass more money. At the expense of everyone else's lives. Proven that very day when Suisei aligns himself with Sae, with the money he stole from Chage, with the intent that, in exchange for helping her, he'll get a sizable return once they were all free.
In the end, this alliance failed. While Sae planned for her opponents to waste all their money on the fourth day, meaning no Detective to be present on the fifth day, Kyoko had secretly stashed one million yen prior to Uozumi's corpse being dispose of. Thus, she became the Detective, using her position to save everyone from being killed by Sae that night.
But...there would be no happy ending to the Norman's Hotel case. Suisei wanted the near 1 billion yen the hotel had to offer one way or the other. After confronting Sae before she escape about said money, he ended up killing her with a hammer that she had gotten for her Duel Noir. Taking Sae's gun, he shot Yuzen Minase and Meruko Mifune, before corning Yui and Kyoko before they could leave. He wanted to use that money for his endeavors, but needed no witnesses alive for it. He was going to spare Kyoko, but since she chose Yui opted to try to kill her instead. Thankfully, for the girls, Meruko was still alive long enough to command Suisei's gun to bend. Suisei's gun jammed and he was distracted long enough for the girls to make it outside.
Suisei gave chase, only to be confronted with the Executives to the VCC: Johnny Arp, Gekka Ryuzoji and Mikado Shinsen (who had been acting as a participant in the case). Mikado hands him a gun and Suisei mumbles about the 'Fall' having begun before killing himself.
Suisei only cares about two things: time and money. Money allows him to spend as little time as possible, and in turn that saved time can be used to get him more money. He lives his life by his creed, dictating whether he speaks, pays his restaurant tab or whether he goes about committing mass murder or conspiracy for the sake of cash. As one can imagine, this means Suisei is utterly self-centered and holds an immense ego. He believes that world is better investing in someone like himself and holds no shame in his corrupt nature or murderous actions.
Masking such vanity and brutality is a man whose highly intelligent and quick on the uptake, able to analyze a person simply by how they dress. He's charismatic, eccentric, and flamboyant with his antics utterly bewildering others or earning captivation (like breaking a chair on a wall to test what's behind it or interruption Yui and Kyoko's arguing with a horn). He oozes confidence and rarely ever becomes truly shocked by an extreme turn of events. When cornered by the VCC Executives he takes their option to kill himself in utter defeat, showing he at least is someone that accepts his fate, rather than risking fighting and getting off worse.
The Rundown
Tumblr media
Suisei holds a rather integral part of the DRK storyline, despite really only lasting for about one book (ignoring his brief appearance at the end of the first novel). He's the first ally and sort of pseudo mentor of Team YK, giving them a more in-depth look of the Duel Noir and the Victims Catharsis Committee and even scolding them whenever they act unbecoming of detectives in his eyes. He holds the status of being the first of third party characters willing to join the girls in going against the Duel Noir...
And also integral in being the first to show that even those unrelated to the VCC are dangers that the girls have to be wary of, being the first outsider to not only be willing to work against the girls but try to kill them as well. Suisei serves an aspect to DRK's 'Justice vs Corruption' theme, being a representative of Corruption.
As one can imagine, this would be his Greed theme, which is also his Drive as a Detective. Suisei's is more alike with a mercenary than a 'true' detective. He works only for the sake of prestige and cash, holding an opportunistic mindset that decides what he does, even if its immoral. He had no idea who the culprit was when he first entered, but any compulsion to truly catch them was thrown away for the chance to make more money. Even it means essentially letting a culprit go or trying to kill every other survivor to obtain more wealth. This greed sets him apart not just from Team YK but even the greedier participants of Norman's Hotel. For those like Minase or Sae, while they are bad people who scammed others, they are only doing it because they are either in poverty or in an extremely rough spot in life. Suisei, while we don't know his backstory, makes it extremely obvious he's very wealthy and not in need of more. So not only is he going against his profession's purpose, he commits crimes out of a pure selfish desire for what's probably something he had more than enough.
Suisei is essentially both sides of the poor qualities that he mentioned making up a bad detective and a foil to Team YK. He's logical and intelligent like Kyoko, but his own lack of creed makes him untrustworthy and despicable. He's holds passion for his cases like Yui, but they're all dedicated to getting money instead of the client - which by his own words makes him useless. If the two of them together make up a proper detective, he's both of them together at their worst and no good by his own definition.
Even if it comes from unreality, Suisei's role in the fabricated flashback LCC is still something to note concerning the book's whole 'Reality v Escapism/Unreality' theme. He's a detective hired to do his actual job this time, yet throughout the course of his involvement his actions are constant clashing with the LCC and its participants. The competition is supposed to be a closed off affair with the cast involved being equally as secretive in their ongoings and affairs in their attempt to win. But then here comes Suisei, who gives not a single care about their whole ordeals and will gladly expose the truth or their own insecurities. Not because he cares about their lives, but the fact is he just wants to get his finished payment. In DRT, where the reality of one's situation isn't so clean, he serves the Reality aspect at its most negative: intrusive, uncaring and only caring about its truth being revealed, no matter the state of those that wish otherwise.
Personal Thoughts
Tumblr media
I really love Suisei! He's a chaotic, greedy, jerk, but God is he just fun to read about! You can tell Kitayama had his entire character down from the get go and really knew how to execute it. He strikes a good balance of charming and scummy, that even when he becomes the final villain of DRK2, you can't really fully despise him.
Compared to Sachi's messy ordeal with Gekka, Suisei's greediness can be seen wayback during his dinner with Team YK where he ditches the girls so they pay his bill instead or when he's inspecting Yui via how much her clothes cost. Right there, one knows his whole deal, yet not the extent of what he's willing to go through to get his money.
But when its finally revealed he's been using the DN for his own gain? Not only does it fit, but it feels extremely natural. We know already he loves money and how sly he is in his actions from his very first scene, so it doesn't come out of nowhere. But what sells it even more is how he acts once Team YK becomes aware of his true nature. That is to say, he doesn't change at all!!
Suisei from the start to finish is the same character we see from the beginning to end. He doesn't become deathly cold or overly aggressive (demeanor wise, mind you). No, he stays as this confident eccentric up until his death. Suisei doesn't change, what is 'changing' is the readers knowledge of the depths of his hunger for money. You think that it stops at just running from his tab or even helping a killer, but no. It's a gradual realization that he has little standards when it comes to getting what he wants. That he holds no issues in committing evil and is a human that's utterly content in being awful for the sake of himself.
He's a person that's true to himself...which is both an entertaining boon and makes for a rather unsettling antagonist when you get past the flashiness. Of the DRK cast, him being so popular (well popular in obscure side novels) is well deserved!

READ THIS NOW!!!!
this isnt finished yet but i want to let you know before you read that there will be MANY. sensitive topics such as, murder, rape, torture, cannibalism, vomit, self harm, excessive amounts of detail for most of these topics, pedophilia, grooming, incest, and like i said before theres going to be alot of detail. maybe not so much at first but once i start writing more there will be the reasoning is because i want to make suzuhikos backstory as disturbing as possible well, the amount that i can handle. if you are uncomfy reading any of this dont read it. also i put a scene between suzuhikos mom(michiko) and suzuhiko first so i can get it out of the way. but later on im probably going to write the school day prior so its like an actual book more than a silly fanfiction.
ALSSOOO idk if i said this but i wrote this like atleast a year ago so its kinda bad ill fix it sooner or later but ive been taking a hiatus
