Kirinmaru: Redeemed Villain
Tumblr media
Despite riku, the tree of ages, osamu kirin, and some others think, I really didn't see kirinmaru as the villain, more like zero, konton, totetsu, tokotsu, jakotsumaru, and kyuki.
Character
In the original, Naraku was the main villain everybody hated and the reason that he was despised because he had the elements that made him a great antagonist, something that kirinmaru completely lacked as he barely had a personality.
Kirinmaru is a daiyokai while Naraku was a hanyō who eventually ended up becoming a yokai at the end.
Naraku is a sadist who enjoys inflicting emotional pain on others, Kirinmaru seems to prefer granting swift and quick deaths to his enemies. The emotional pain that Kirinmaru causes others comes more out of a failure to account for collateral damage or consider the emotional well-being of those around him in his drive to fight the strongest foes he can.
Naraku would often bring the fight to Inuyasha's and sesshomaru's groups through allies, people he had tricked, or his incarnations, whereas Kirinmaru only acted when provoked such as when he was told the prophecy of his death or when towa, setsuna, and moroha were close to his ship. kirinmaru's incarnations, lieutenants, and zero battled against towa, setsuna, and moroha on their own initiative, not under orders to kill them from above.
The ones under Naraku’s command were often incarnations whose hearts he removed and threatened with death to ensure their obedience while the demons under Kirinmaru’s command are completely loyal to him with the exception of osamu kirin, riku, and Kyūki. While Naraku never cared about the lives of his incarnations and was willing to threaten and abuse them and would kill them if they failed or tried to betray him, Kirinmaru is apathetic towards his subordinates but he does at least acknowledge that anyone who serves under him must be a powerful warrior and while not above disciplining them himself, he was never shown to outright abuse his followers.
naraku rarely trusted anyone except for byakuya and kanna with anything including information, moments before her death, as he especially didn't trust hakudoshi, the infant, and kagura. While kirinmaru was too trusting as he didn't know osamu kirin, riku, and kyuki weren't loyal to him and easily betrayed him. naraku was very smart and calculating as he went all the way to mount hakurei to properly remove his heart after a failed attempt and nearly dying by sesshomaru and inuyasha's hands and defeat kikyo and knew when he created hakudoshi and the infant and knew that they were going to betray and kill him. kirinmaru was smart but he wasn't smart like naraku and wasn't calculating with others as he charges ahead without thinking.
Naraku would seldom resort to physical combat, relying on his barrier to protect him and his miasma to kill his foes. Kirinmaru not only fights directly in combat but lives to give his all against worthy foes.
While Naraku would flee from battle if the tables were turned Kirinmaru would stand, fight and fall even when fighting opponents stronger than himself, like Tōga.
Naraku saw himself as superior to all beings, human and demon alike, and especially despised hanyōs while Kirinmaru is at best apathetic to most beings. While he does hates humans and hanyōs, he still acknowledges the ones who gain his respect, such as the likes of Inuyasha, Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha.
Naraku was cowardly and preferred to trick and manipulate others to fight his battles for him whereas Kirinmaru would openly face his opponents in combat.
Naraku would often take advantage when his enemies were weakened whereas Kirinmaru was insulted by this notion, preferring his enemies be at their strongest when he fights them as seen when he orders Riku to take medicinal herbs to his arch-rival Tōga.
naraku rarely lets his guard down as he always has his barriers and miasma while kirinmaru lets his guard down as he gets stabbed by his incarnation riku and towa and drugged by a human method by his other incarnation osamu kirin.
Whereas Naraku sought the Sacred Jewel and its power for himself Kirinmaru gave the Rainbow Pearls he had to his lieutenants and seemingly had no desire to retrieve the ones that were taken or the ones in possession of Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha.
Didn't act like a villain as seen during most of his appearances in season 1, kirinmaru was on his ship reading, sitting down, sleeping, and looking up at the sky.
Despite the Tree of Ages stating that Kirinmaru was power-hungry by wishing to warp time itself to his will, it was noted by Myōga that Kirinmaru was content in only ruling the Eastern Lands, which was supported by the fact that he left Tōga to govern the Western Lands in peace for years, with him expressing shock that Kirinmaru would be trying to rule the Western Lands and desires to warp time to his will and stating that he isn't the type to go this far.
Sure, kirinmaru tried to hunt and kill moroha once when she was a baby but soon gave up on it.
2. Nerfed
Kirinmaru should have been far more powerful than Naraku, yet he was nerfed for every fight with Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha. Why? To skip over a huge opportunity to develop Kirinmaru’s character and just claim he’s holding back.
I really wish Kirinmaru would’ve blocked Riku’s sneak attack with ease and just completely annihilate him. They spent the entire season 1 building him up to be a powerful daiyokai and to see him get stabbed and almost beaten up by a shihanyo and a hanyo is quite anti-climactic.
I understand that there was Toga and Sesshomarus blood/demonic energy involved but Kirinmaru coming out unscathed would’ve hyped an epic showdown in season 2 but what a way to completely disregard a character that was supposedly on par with Toga.
But the idea of a hanyo and a shihanyo squaring up against a great demon like kirinmaru and actually holding their own is still ridiculous. They, Towa especially, have not had nearly the amount of training with their abilities to have earned that battle. The girls are awfully overpowered. kirinmaru could have killed riku with ease but they may have wanted him to wound kirinmaru so towa, setsuna, and moroha would have a fighting chance.
Inuyasha had a deep story about the struggle of being half. He was an outcast from both sides, and his strength was limited by his half human heritage despite being the son of Toga. Sesshomaru bested him in most of their battles, and the only reason Inuyasha didn't die was because he allowed him to live. Inuyasha got stronger primarily through wielding and mastering Tessaiga's many forms and through making strong and useful allies. His demonic form, though it helped them get out of a few scrapes here and there, was a hindrance and a danger to himself and everyone around him.
In comparison, these girls have been kidding around for a whole season 1 and are now using their demonic energy like a super saiyan or jojos power up.
In season 2, kirinmaru was battling sesshomaru like equals but gets injured by towa's, setsuna's, and moroha's attacks and gets easily pushed back by osamu kirin.
3. Easily Persuaded
naraku was a master manipulator as he tricked many characters in the series including sesshomaru and kikyo while kirinmaru was easily manipulated by sesshomaru, jaken, zero, and even by his own incarnation osamu kirin.
4. Sudden Change
In season 2, kirinmaru was mostly received a character change. In season 1, you've noticed that he doesn't like grapes when eating one but in season 2 he's seen happily eating them.
In season 1 and a little bit of season 2, kirinmaru was disgusted by zero using rin as a human shield and didn't attack his rivals and enemies' love ones to hurt them but in episode 47 he went against his word.
In season 1, kirinmaru was an honorable daiyokai who was naive to an unstable and overprotective father.
5. For Plot
In season 1, we see in episode 23 that kirinmaru sees the grim comet through osamu kirin and in season 2 he wants to destroy it but the creators wrote that he wants to destroy it to be known as the strongest by humans, even though he despises them.
they tried to make kirinmaru have villain qualities during his fight with riku and rion by making rion stab riku.
we see kirinmaru show up to fight or start conflict.
Ex.
kirinmaru appearing before riku, towa, and rion to fight and accidentally blinding riku.
kirinmaru showing up and demanding sesshomaru to come out before battling inuyasha, kagome, and moroha.
kirinmaru battling riku and rion and kidnapping rion to go to the modern era.
kirinmaru and sesshomaru having a final battle and loses.
In episode 46, kirinmaru gets easily drugged by a human method.
Unlike naraku and his group that were easily off especially in the final act, only one person was brought back which sadly was riku.
6. Osamu Kirin
osamu kirin, who barely appeared in the series, was suddenly the villain of the last episodes of season 2.
osamu kirin has convinced himself that he is god's gift to humanity. osamu's whole situation is pretty hilarious, except that he's now in way over his head and has made the very bad decision to take on not just Kirinmaru, but probably also sesshomaru and inuyasha, and all other yokai out there, who he thinks need to be wiped out because rion died, even though she died at the hands of a hanyo not a yokai. As osamu is overzealous but confusing as he wants humanity to know about demons instead of being folklore yet he wants to kill them, even though rion is a yokai as well.
In the end, osamu kirin gets easily killed by riku and towa only to come back and emotionally tortures rion before getting permanently defeated.
7. Riku
He is one of the most awful characters in yashahime as he's more of a villain like zero. The creator of yashahime wants to disgustingly pair him with towa at the start of his debut but yet only wants to kill people he loves which includes zero and towa.
riku gave us a bad excuse on why he hates the 4 perils, even though they serve kirinmaru and zero, and manipulated everyone and themselves for them to be killed for the rainbow pearls.
riku taunted homura by touching tamano and evil smirking while homura burned himself alive.
Riku was very scheming and manipulative in Season 1, but he was not really punished by it back then; literally nothing that he did affected negatively his relationship with the people he cared about.
In this season, I expected the things he did in the past to come back to bite him in the form of drama between him and Towa, but it didn't happen. Towa didn't find out how involved he was in everything that happened to her family, and the bits she did find out she really wasn't bothered about.
Despite characters calling riku handsome he really just weird and ugly, I strongly dislike riku's appearance as they didn't put any thought into it from his awful hairstyle, face, and attire and in season 2 they changed his attire and eye color from green to lavender to turquoise.
Unlike kagura, riku had no reason to kill and/or betray kirinmaru. kagura was forced to serve naraku and couldn't really leave his side but before riku betrayed kirinmaru, he was free to do what he wanted to do and had a life of his own.
After he killed zero, riku cried but instantly got over her dead within seconds.
I don't understand why the creators of yashahime made riku sickly in love with towa as he knew about her before she was born but I guess that they wanted create a romance for the main character just like Inuyasha and kagome, a pairing I strongly hate.
I really wished they kept riku dead and somehow brought back kirinmaru.
8. Rion
For most of rion's appearances that she's cruel and bitter at kirinmaru and wants to stop him, wants to redeem zero, and wants to die.
rion wants kirinmaru to kill but wants zero to live, even though zero wants to kill towa, setsuna, and moroha for revenge on toga.
Rion can't let go of her resentment towards her father for keeping her in a cocoon in Mount Musubi for 600 years. That resentment is preventing her from moving on to the afterlife. She's a disgruntled spirit - not an evil one. She thinks that she is the only one who can fix the situation with her father. Her situation is very similar to Kikyo's situation.
At episode 47, when towa, setsuna, and moroha, rion suddenly realizes that she still held affection for her father and wants him to stop fighting.
Instead of convincing kirinmaru to move on in life, rion decided that she wants him to die with her so they can join zero together.
rion knows how to fight as we see her and riku fight kirinmaru but she doesn't fight back when it came to sakasa, the hanyo that killed her, and she had the flute sword. But they had towa sacrifice her body to rion so she can face her fears before she dies.
The only thing I don't like about rion's design is her hairstyle and the length of it.
9. Zero
In season 1, she looked more like she was the big bad of the series than Kirinmaru, who didn't even act like the villain.
Zero possessed much more of a threat to our main characters, as she is responsible for the forest fire that separated Towa and Setsuna and indirectly separated Moroha from Inuyasha and kagome. She's done various other things, blackmailing Sesshomaru by cursing Rin. She feels very much that she had the same level of connection that she had that the same connection Naraku did with Inuyasha.
zero's back story as well seemed uninteresting and confusing, having feelings towards Toga, and when he dies her love for him drives her to kill his descendants. She could have become more interesting as the series progressed. If the rainbow pearls sealed away her emotions, then why is zero taking revenge on toga's descendants and got angry at sesshomaru's mother.
But that was not the case, as when season 2 aired, is when Zero started to run down downhill by gathering the rainbow pearls, for revenge, kidnapping towa, and basically holding rin's life hostage, and it all ends in episodes 36 and 37.
To start with, Setsuna learns from Rin that she must save Zero to stop the curse from killing her. Really wished we knew that before. Thanks, Rin, which leads into the next episode.
At this point, Zero has been emotionally torturing Towa for the entire night by reminding her of her sadness and suffering, and is pretty much trying to get Towa angry enough so that she can kill her, and in doing so kill Rin. She's almost successful when Setsuna shows up, shows Towa the dream butterfly, and suddenly Towa loses all the anger she has towards zero in a matter of seconds.
towa then thanks zero for what she's done and it is really annoying. zero prepares to kill herself and Setsuna cuts the thread of fate tying Zero to Toga and she removes the curse from Rin and commits suicide by Riku as she tells kirinmaru that he's also going to die.
All of these in a matter of minutes, they make Zero, this threatening and uninteresting villain and rendered her more pathetic. They had to give her a redemption arc when she's been the most villainous character in this sequel. Kirinmaru felt more like an obstacle the same way Koga was in Inuyasha. But this, this was so dumb, and when I was watching episode 36 and heard what Rin said, I knew what this was leading into but it was so much worse when Towa thanked her for it. She really didn't need to thank the person who separated her from her twin sister and tried multiple times to kill her, sister, and rin because it's just wrong.
The creators of yashahime couldn't even give zero an actual conclusion that fitted with her character, and she's forgiven so easily. You didn't see Inuyasha thanking Naraku for setting him and Kikyo against each other and killing Kikyo, Sango thanking naraku for killing her village and controlling her kohaku, and miroku thanking naraku for cursing his bloodline. Could you imagine how messed up that would have been?
I also don't like her character design and hairstyle as just like other characters they didn't put any thought into it.
10. Death
It was cringe and lazy.
After kirinmaru loses to sesshomaru, he tells sesshomaru to kill him, gets sent to the grim butterfly, weakly watches rion get tormented by osamu kirin then reconciled, apologizes to towa, setsuna, and moroha before setsuna cuts his and rion thread of fate, and get suck into the amatsumikaboshi then rion told him that they will join zero before they fly away.
11. Appearance
There's something's I love about kirinmaru's appearance and there's also what I hate about his appearance, one of the things I love is his shirt and I hate his armor but we all know with other characters they didn't put any thought into the designs. I really dislike his hair and the style of it.

see, like. i can understand kashiwagi having survived yakuza 3. he's not actually standing in the helicopter's line of fire for that long; it sweeps over him once and he falls down out of range just after kiryu does:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
obviously it did enough damage and caused enough blood loss for him to almost pass out while talking to kiryu (and then pass out for real)
but RICHARDSON???
if 1) mine isn't also confirmed alive 2) kashiwagi doesn't SWAT revolve bar at some point during the runtime of rgg8 i'm going to be sorely disappointed (delusional)

man i genuinely really like Osamu Kirin and the idea of him being the true final villain, i just kinda wished he had... ya know, had a consistent goal at the end instead of changing his motivation like 20 times lmao
like, all of his ultimate motivations, none of them are bad- it’s just that he switches them like. 20 times in the span of like 4 episodes

They really shouldnt have tried to force setsuna and towa being older than moroha
but also imo… the twins still kinda fall short in development… and Moroha is still way more entertaining to watch than those two………
The last episode also highkey shows how much they dont understand their characters. I seriously don’t think Sessomaru would concoct a 14year plan to help his kids grow up and this was all just tough love, and honestly they should have gone in to more detail to flesh out his reasons for basically putting everyone he cared about in cages.
It would have been great to be able to compare his parenting against Kirinmaru’s, as they were BOTH overprotective. It’s just a really big waste of opportunity to not dive into more of his decisions >:0
Also the fact that Inuyasha and Kagome were conveniently hidden because they were too OP is funny, but also ehhh they couldn’t have thought of anything else for them?? ehhhh?

Strongest as Three!
Combining their powers, Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha overcame their battle that crossed between the Feudal Era and Reiwa Era. What they obtained after their fierce battle was a time of rest with their family and the strongest bond!
The end game of the battle between the Yashahimes and Kirinmaru took an unexpected direction. In order to write history anew, Kirin Osamu, Kirinmaru’s right arm that lived in the Reiwa Era, had the giant “Grim Butterfly” take in Rion and enter the feudal world, plunging it into chaos. To defeat Kirin and rescue Rion, the three princesses infiltrated the Grim Butterfly with Riku. They cut Rion’s complex threads of “fate” which have been mixed with love and hate towards her father. Then, with Towa giving Rion a push of encouragement by risking her life, Rion gains the courage to fight. Having gained independence from her father’s protection, she was able to reconcile with Kirinmaru. Father and daughter return to the sword of Amatsu-Mikaboshi and ascend to heaven.
Thus, the Yashahimes’ long battle finally came to an end. Moroha exchanged smiles with her parents, Inuyasha and Kagome, and Towa and Setsuna finally hugged Rin. Then, there was also Sesshōmaru who watched with a quiet gaze—.
Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha’s journey, called life, will continue from here on for a long time. There’s no doubt that the three Yashahimes, who have become connected with the strongest bond, will cut open a bright future by combining their strength!
Character Bios
Higurashi Towa Though she once lost her life, she was revived with the kon and haku of the parent-child pair of Kirinmaru (and Rion) as they ascended to heaven. She chooses to live in the Feudal Era that Setsuna and her mother, Rin, live in.
Setsuna She can see the threads of fate that connect people and cut them. By cutting the thread of fate between Kirinmaru and Rion, she lends them her strength to undo the ill feelings between the two of them.
Moroha She helps Setsuna in the final battle by severing Rion’s threads of fate with the bow and arrow that she received from her mother, Kagome. With the help of her father, Inuyasha, the last of her debt is paid off!!
Sesshōmaru Though he overwhelmed Kirinmaru with extraordinary strength, he did not strike the final blow for the sake of his daughters. After the string of battles ended, he gifted high quality fabric to the girls.
Rin She attains the long wished for embrace with her daughters, saying “I have waited for this day.” Using the fabrics that Sesshōmaru gifted, she tailors the girls’ kimonos.
Inuyasha While socially awkward, he shows a fatherly figure by helping Moroha pay off her debt. When Moroha holds his hand, his face turns completely red in bashfulness.
Kagome When she learns that Moroha is shouldering debt, she immediately decides to pay it off. As if to make up for the time they spent apart, as a mother, she tries to be of strength to her daughter.
Takechiyo Though he previously had a cowardice side, he gradually matured through traveling with Moroha and the others. In the decisive final battle, he assisted in stopping the Grim Butterfly alongside Inuyasha and the others.
Hisui Having an unrequited love for Setsuna, he decides to go through special training with Kohaku to become a man worthy of her. He has the favor of Princess Aiya of the Kantō Deputy Shogun family of Ōgigayatsu Hiiragi.
Kirinmaru With Sesshōmaru’s words, he comes to realize he’s been caught up over that which he’s lost. Having Setsuna cut his thread of fate with Rion, he ascended to heaven with his daughter.
Rion Though she always wished to take down Kirinmaru, she actually loved her father. With Towa’s aid, she was able to overcome her trauma with the half-demon, Sakasa, and reconcile with her father.
Kirin Osamu He planned to write a new history by having the Grim Butterfly take in Rion and wipe out demons from the world. However, he was defeated by Towa and Riku in the end.
Riku Having been severely wounded in the battle with Kirin, he tells Towa “I love you” and perishes but revives later on. Calling himself “Kai”, he appears before Towa once again.
Their Last Work as Sunrise Director Hishida Masakazu
A Story Built on the Exchanging of Various Opinions
— Thank you for your hard work in the running of Hanyō no Yashahime, The Second Chapter! Having finished production, what are your thoughts?
Hishida: I must say, it was very hard. While listening to the opinions of each area involved and having arguments, how to bring this story together was A LOT of trial and error. The broadcasting period for cour 2 was merely half a year. However, I’ve been participating in this work since around the summer of the year before last and while I cried like a baby like “It’s not finishing no matter how much I work”, I somehow managed to get through it (laughs).
— In episode 48 (the final episode) “A Future That Goes on For Eternity”, the parents and children who were long separated were finally able to spend a peaceful time together. With Riku, who we thought had perished, reviving, it was a (grand) finale.
Hishida: If that’s how you feel, then it was worth the hardship. It’s just that, there were a lot of ideas for the final episode. Actually, in terms of Riku, there was an idea to leave him extinguished as is.
— What, really?!
Hishida: I think this is where tastes differentiate. Even amongst the staff, there was quite a split in opinion. I was on the extinguish Riku side by the way. To elaborate, I was on the side of having Riku perish, lose his memories, and then come back to life as a completely different person, Kai. As for Towa, she currently doesn’t recognize it as love but 10, 20 years down the road, having her think like “That may have been my first love……” would’ve been heartrending but beautiful, I think.
— And a different flavor…...
Hishida: On the other hand, Sunrise’s literature producer, Takahashi (Tetsuko)-san and others were on the revive Riku side. Various opinions came up, but in the end, (the original creator of Inuyasha, Takahashi) Rumiko-sensei said “Towa would be pitiable” so it shaped into Riku being revived.
— In other words, when Riku revived and called himself “Kai”, that was a remnant of Director Hishida’s idea?
Hishida: Oh, about that, there was a plan a further while back for two more characters that were exactly like Riku to appear. Kai and one more who was named “Kuu”, so the three of them would be like Land, Sea, and Sky.
— Hence the saying early on of “Pirate come ashore”.
Hishida: However, there were all sorts of difficulties in introducing two new characters, so we decided on just Kai. Then after that, Kai also vanished and at the very end, it was decided that (Riku) would be revived after all.
— By the way, what sort of mechanism allowed Riku to revive?
Hishida: After perishing in the battle with Kirin-sensei, Riku turned back into a horn and Towa placed that into her breast pocket. Then, when Towa revived receiving kon and haku from Kirinmaru and Rion, the horn in her pocket also received kon and haku. After some time, (Riku) revived; that’s the mechanism.
— A coincidental result so to speak.
Hishida: Regarding that as well, there was an idea to not use the kon and haku element anymore in the final stage. However, there were repeated exchanges of ‘this element was especially brought out so wouldn’t it be best to use it until the end’ and as a result, it came out like this. That’s how much the staff exchanged heated discussions on whether to use an element and tempered things out. Putting all that together was the really hard part.
You Won’t Mature Unless You Toil Yourself
— While producing the climax, what sort of things were you conscious of Director Hishida?
Hishida: Having been passed the baton at The Second Chapter, I felt that my role was to figure out how to make the Yashahimes grow within cour 2. In any case, the number one thing on my mind as I worked was how will the girls, including Towa, Setsuna, Moroha, and Rion, move forward? To start with, if it’s just defeating a powerful enemy, then having Sesshōmaru and Inuyasha is fine. Afterall, put those two together and they can defeat anyone. Then what exactly can three girls do? When I thought about it, I felt “How can they save Rion who has the same position as a daughter” was the only thing. As a result of probing into that, the final battled turned out the way it did instead of a Kirinmaru vs Yashahimes composition.
— I really thought the plot would pan out so that…… the three princesses would combine their strength to defeat Kirinmaru while getting assistance from Sesshōmaru. Hence, the final battle of the three princesses helping Rion to overcome her trauma of the half-demon, Sakasa, was a little unexpected.
Hishida: Children grow up arbitrarily, even if their parents don’t look after them. If anything, if a parent anticipates and helps them with everything, they end up like Kirinmaru and Rion instead. It’s not like “not enough to live but not enough to die”, but I think fundamentally, leaving (a child) alone and only giving them a lifeboat when needed is important in child rearing. Children won’t mature if they themselves don’t toil after all. That is also the hidden theme* of this work.
(translator’s note: Hidden theme is basically what the creator themself thinks the story is about. There’s the apparent/surface theme for the general public and then there’s the hidden theme for the creator.)
— In the final episode, Rin spoke of this message (on your behalf). Rion herself rejected her father, but in a way, there was a part of her that still depended on him.
Hishida: That is what I think. I think there was an aspect of even though she’s the child of a greater demon, she herself didn’t fight and instead, left it completely to her father. Despite possessing the Star Slicer Flute (= Zanseiken) as a sword of protection from the start, Rion probably never used it when she was alive; not even once. For that reason, when Sakasa seized her, she was killed while at her wit’s end. If that’s the case, when she does use it, I thought that would become a step forward in her growth. Hence why climactic battle had that kind of composition. Although, there was actually quite a bit of controversy on that development. Among the staff opinions, there was one that voiced “I don’t get the meaning of Rion fighting”. However, that’s when I said “No, I do!” and conveyed my view. This is where I’m glad my view came through (strained laugh).
— In the January issue interview, Director Hishida, you mentioned “Having done anime geared towards elementary school girls for the past 10 years, the answer I came up with was ‘I think battles between girls cannot be resolved with brute strength’” and it certainly felt like “a non-brute force method of resolution”.
Hishida: Yes, I think I crammed in everything I gained from working on anime geared towards elementary school girls. To start with, in the beginning, there was an idea to have the last battle be a “battle with the Spirit of the Tree of Ages”. I mean, the ultimate mastermind behind this story was the Spirit of the Tree of Ages.
— That is true.
Hishida: The one who instigated Sesshōmaru was the Spirit of the Tree of Ages and in the end, Inuyasha’s family got separated because Sesshōmaru didn’t go against what the Spirit of the Tree of Ages said. I feel a little bad that Inuyasha’s family got caught up in all this and not just Sesshōmaru’s family. However, we just couldn’t have the Spirit of the Tree of Ages brought down (strained laugh).
— There really was a variety of opinions exchanges while working on this.
Hishida: There were heated arguments with fellow staff members at times too (laughs). Including Rumiko-sensei and Shōgakukan, there’s no mistake that we discussed unreservedly to make this. We repeatedly had conversations that were quite secretive regarding the plot for the final decisive battle, starting from around episode 43 “The Blackout Stage”. The final episode became one that was especially packed with Rumiko-sensei’s feelings.
— In the final episode, there was also a scene where Rin made kimonos for the girls using fabric that Sesshōmaru delivered. Seeing them wearing the clothes they wore in the ED (ending theme) was a happy surprise.
Hishida: It’s an homage to Inuyasha, The Final Act. There was originally this idea that “I want to make plain clothes for the three princess and have them wear it at some point”, and so then it became “then let’s have them wear it in the ED first”.
— Moroha in the ED wore a priestess outfit, but does she not wear a priestess outfit?
Hishida: I’m sure she’ll wear priestess attire when she’s helping Kagome with priestess work. Hishinuma (Yoshihito)-san (animation character design and chief animation director) strongly wished that since “Towa and Setsuna are going to wear new clothes. I want Moroha to wear (new clothes) too!”. Moroha is cute so she looks good in anything.
If People Can Feel Something from the Various Family Dynamics
— Was there a scene within the end game that particularly left an impression on you?
Hishida: Mmmm, I want to say all of it but…… if we’re going to praise one as strong, I’d have to say it’s the scene I mentioned earlier about Rion fighting, I think. I mean, we did push aside all sorts of opposition to do it and it was message to the kids watching too. Encouraged by Towa’s figure of fighting with the Zanseiken, I think the part where Rion wields the sword herself is a scene that’s packed with one of the themes for The Second Chapter which is “stop hiding behind your parent’s back, take a step forward, and fight.”
— Then which character was the most memorable? As an average viewer, (I thought) Kirin Osamu’s strong character was very entertaining.
Hishida: I’m glad. I was also fixated on Kirin-sensei. He was a more ordinary character in the beginning, but Rumiko-sensei pointed out that “Kirin-sensei’s character is a little weak” and after all sorts of trial and error, he became the strong character (that you see). Although, the person in charge of producing the storyboard for episode 44, “The Time of The Grim Comet’s Crash”, did go overboard so it did leave a taste like Kirin Osamu alone was from a different work (laughs); however, it was entertaining, so it was fine.
— His eyes that periodically peaked out from his glasses were just like Kirinmaru’s which was also interesting.
Hishida: He really only showed his eyes during critical moments. There aren’t any bottle bottom glasses in the Feudal Era, so we were able to use that idea because he was a character in the Modern Era.
— By the way, why was Kirin-sensei naked when he came out of the well when Riku was born clothed?
Hishida: When Riku was created, Zero and Rion were in the vicinity, so perhaps Kirinmaru was mindful of the women in his process, maybe? Kirin-sensei was…… inspired by The Terminator (laughs). Truthfully, I was just thinking a silhouette, so when I was saw the footage, I was surprised like “The view is unexpectedly clear?!”. I think everyone (as in the audience) was surprised too but I was surprised as well (laughs).
— Around how many years prior to the story of Hanyō no Yashahime was Kirin-sensei born?
Hishida: It was during a time when the Bone Eater’s Well was open, so probably around the time of Inuyasha, when Kagome was going between the feudal and modern era. Starting from that naked state, he first got clothes somewhere, travelled around the world somehow, and then became a teacher. Although he was unable to become a history teacher and became an English teacher instead, I think he can speak the language of the places he’s visited. Chinese, Arabic, and French.
— Was it just by chance that Kirin-sensei worked at the school Towa transferred to?
Hishida: It was by chance. Although I think the Spirit of the Tree of Ages had something to do with that too. I bet (the Spirit) manipulated something so that the “fellow foreign bodies in the era” could meet. In my mind, this entire incident is connected to the Spirit of the Tree of Ages. Afterall, this incident had already started way before the start of the story, Hanyō no Yashahime.
— Well then, were there any characters that you felt were difficult to move?
Hishida: Noo, there was nothing but difficult characters (laughs). It really was a constant struggle. But I have to say, I felt that the Inuyasha characters were difficult to move. I once again felt that calling back characters from a completed work is truly an arduous task.
— It was worth the hardship as I think the characters moved very vividly. There were all sorts of family dynamics depicted like Sesshōmaru’s family, Inuyasha’s family, and Kirinmaru’s family.
Hishida: In addition to Sesshōmaru’s and Inuyasha’s daughters being the protagonists for Hanyō no Yashahime this time, this work was created during a time where those who watched Inuyasha as a kid now have families of their own and watch anime with their kids. Since there was that circumstance, we depicted “a parent and child story”, including the relationship between Rion and Kirinmaru. Right around the time we were making this, the term “*parent lottery” became popular, so I thought if I could convey something to those watching through this work…... That being said, even though the family environments of Sesshōmaru’s family and Inuyasha’s family are completely different, all three princesses were separated from their parents at a young age. However, everyone turned out decent. Reversely, with Kirinmaru’s family, father and daughter were always close together but things didn’t go well. I felt that if people could feel something from the various dynamics, I’d be happy.
(translator’s note: The idea that one cannot choose who their parents are and/or one’s prospects and circumstances in life is determined by their parents.)
— One more important thing was the relationship between the Higurashi family and Towa. This was a contrast to Kirinmaru’s family (parent and child).
Hishida: Yes, Towa and the people of the Higurashi family aren’t blood related, but I think Towa was able to become such a good kid thanks to Sōta, Mama Moe, and Mei-chan. The thing is, when Towa was in the Modern Era, the issue regarding Setsuna was big, so her heart was closed off to her surroundings in some respect. However, after that issue was resolved, that which she had closed off opened, and I think she became a gentle kid. In episode 43 when she returned to the Modern Era, she greeted her classmates. At that moment, I felt “Towa’s matured!”. Earlier, I spoke about how I felt my role was “to figure out how the Yashahimes will grow” and truthfully, I worried about how I would make them grow at first. But before I knew it, they had matured, so I thought “Oh thank goodness”.
— By the way, was there an idea to have Towa return to the Modern Era at the end?
Hishida: There certainly was. Would she stay in the Feudal Era or return to the Modern Era? The thing is, we discussed this at a pretty early stage. You see, I was on the “return to the modern era side” for this too (laughs). I thought the pattern of resolving the various issues in the Feudal Era and then having the final decisive battle in the Modern Era was the right path. However, (series composition writer) Sumisawa (Katsuyuki)-san said “I want the end to go back to the Feudal Era after all” so things turned out in accordance with that. From there, we thought about “then how can we progress the story so that it sticks well” and that’s how things turned out like this pretty much.
The Possibilities of the Three Princesses’ Future Is Endless
— Earlier, you talked about Towa’s growth, but please tell us about Setsuna and Moroha’s as well.
Hishida: Moroha was hotheaded, short tempered, and in a way, a fool. However, she’s become aware that Towa and Setsuna are her comrades and properly worries about them. In the final episode when the three of them are together, there’s a scene where she’s moved to tears when she’s told “we’re comrades”. Even when you see that, I think you get this feeling of going from she’s still childish to she’s become a little bit of an adult. For Setsuna, perhaps because she strongly inherited Sesshōmaru’s blood, she was unsociable and completely unaffectionate in the beginning; however, she gradually became affectionate over time. Seeing that figure of her, I felt that she became a proper grown up.
— In that sense, the direction of Towa and Setsuna’s growth is perhaps similar.
Hishida: You’re right. I get the feeling that the traits Setsuna got from Rin especially came out. It’s just that the three princesses becoming adults makes me a little lonely. Moroha being Moroha, I want her to stay a hotheaded fool forever and I also have this feeling of wanting Setsuna to stay aloof and not see her affectionate figure (laughs). Even so, within this story, it’s because the girls went through various hardships and battled a lot that they became adults.
— Your mental state is completely that of a parent who feels both happy and lonely over their child’s growth as they watch over them (laughs). In the final episode, Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha, go on a demon slaying journey with Riku and Takechiyo. When they return from their journey, will they then live with their parents as a family?
Hishida: Who knows. They might return or they may just go on a new journey from there or perhaps they might even get caught up in another incident. I think the possibilities are already endless. I think it would be good if everyone can have fun coming up with all sorts of wild ideas. Me personally, I think even if Towa and the others go back to Rin after finishing their journey, Sesshōmaru will likely be off somewhere again and won’t quite come back. He’ll appear in a flash if Rin and the girls are in imminent danger but once the issue is resolved, he’ll probably leave again (laughs).
— Then, what do you think will happen with Towa and Riku going forward?
Hishida: That too, who knows what’ll happen. The guy who said “I love you” towards Towa came back to life, so you never know what’ll happen (laughs).
— Come to think of it, the “I only kill those I love” ideology that Riku always spoke of; was that second-hand knowledge from Zero?
Hishida: Yes, that it is. While he may have a “kill those you love” mentality, I get the feeling that Riku still didn’t quite know what love was after all. I mean, normally, there’s no way you can kill a person you love. If you’re able to easily kill (that person), then you don’t love them. In episode 42, “The Collapsing Windmill of Time”, even though Rion had a chance to kill Kirinmaru, she couldn’t. There is the fact that Kirinmaru purposely showed an opening too but in the end, it was proof that “you can’t kill those you love”. Riku also saw that. When he teamed up with Towa in episode 47, “Father and Daughter”, it’s possible that it really did look like he was going to kill her. However, the fact that he couldn’t kill her there goes to show what I mean.
— The conclusion also made us curious about Setsuna and Hisui’s relationship going forward.
Hishida: Yes. Although, I think it’s better if a love during one’s youth doesn’t come to fruition, so regarding this too, I’m personally on the side of not wanting them to become intimate. Setsuna and Towa are Sesshōmaru’s daughters so instead of a human and horn, I want them to date greater demons of Sesshōmaru’s rank! ..…. I sound completely like an unpleasant father who meddles in his daughter’s love life (laughs). I’m a warped person like that but it was through Rumiko-sensei and Shōgakukan’s intentions that the relationship settled into something warm and fuzzy. I would be happy if everyone could imagine a variety of ideas about the future from here on.
— Are there any flags for Moroha?
Hishida: I think Moroha is just getting started. She was always alone but she finally reunited with her parents, so she’s gotten to a point where she’s come to recognize what family is. I think right now she enjoys squawking with her father. That slightly awkward feeling Moroha has when she’s with her parents is great. I’m sure everyone was looking forward this kind of figure of Inuyasha and the others for a long time. It was quite a long wait, but it feels like we finally made it to this point.
— Thank you very much. Now then, lastly, a message for our readers please.
Hishida: Even if broadcasting has ended, the fact that you’re reading this article makes me happy. I have a feeling that in a past interview, I said “if I could make this a work that families can enjoy”, but if through this work, you were able to get a feel of what a parent and child bond is and what it means to mature and become an adult, then I am happy.
And oddly enough, Hanyō no Yashahime became the last work under (the) Sunrise (name). At the end of March, the curtains will fall on Sunrise Studio #1 which created the Heisei (Era) TV anime, Inuyasha. It will then open anew as Bandai Namco Film Works Studio #1 starting April. Inheriting the world of a work that started over 20 years ago, I feel honored that we were able to adorn a single turning point in history. Once again, thank you for watching Hanyō no Yashahime to the very end.
Love and Hate That Are Two Sides of the Same Coin
Rion opposed her father, Kirinmaru, who bound her. However, it was the result of various emotions becoming jumbled up such as her longing for her strong and kind father and feeling anxious for her father who continued to fight without considering the dangers. She comes up with a plan to defeat Kirinmaru who’s trying to plunge the feudal world into a degenerate age for her sake, but she couldn’t kill her father after all……
A Humanlike Greater Demon
Being told by Kirin that “Rion’s wish is for Sesshōmaru to be brought down”, Kirinmaru challenges Sesshōmaru to battle. However, Sesshōmaru throws the following words at Kirinmaru “It’s as if you’re human”. Kirinmaru overlaps Rin, who’s watching over Sesshōmaru’s battle, with the former Rion and realizes he’s been averting his eyes from his daughter’s death. Shaking off his doubt, he battles Sesshōmaru on pure demonic instinct and is defeated.
Strong Like Father!
In a final struggle, Kirin, who was defeated by Towa, shows an illusion of Sakasa, the half-demon who took Rion’s life. At her wit’s end, Rion ran away in circles at first, but encouraged by Towa’s figure supporting her with the Zanseiken, she receives the courage to face Sakasa. Strongly wielding a sword, Rion firmly takes a step forward from being the girl who was only protected by her father.
Parent’s Gift to their Child
Each of the parents gives their daughters a present after their battle is over. To Towa and Setsuna are kimonos that Rin tailored using fabric that Sesshōmaru acquired. Both of their new outfits closely resemble Sesshōmaru’s kimono. Inuyasha and Kagome help Moroha pay off her debt. Showing a bashful face, Moroha’s expression as she tries to close the gap between her father little by little, is adorable.
The Parental Love of a Greater Demon
Because of Sesshōmaru, Towa and Setsuna were separated from their parents at a young age and had a harsh early childhood. At first glance, it looks like a cool-headed act, but it seems to be parental love as his half-demon daughters will gain the strength to survive in the feudal world by purposely putting them in a harsh environment. Despite Towa and Setsuna being surprised by his form of affection that’s too hard to understand, their understanding of their father deepened slightly.
The Three’s Journey Still Continues!
The mysterious young man who showed up at the corpse shop, Kai. His true identity: Riku, who miraculously revived from Rion and Kirinmaru’s kon and haku. Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha decide to set out on a demon slaying journey to the Land of Iyo because of Riku’s request. Moroha, who tells Inuyasha and Kagome that she’s going on the expedition, strongly and proudly says “We’re strongest as three!”. It seems the Yashahimes’ adventure is nowhere near over yet.
Hanyō no Yashahime Timeline
This story was already in motion long before Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha met. Exactly where did the various threads of fate intertwine? Let’s organize a timeline and review.
※ The start of the story is the basis for the time periods

Toonami Weekly Recap 02/04/2023
My Hero Academia Season 6 Paranormal Liberation War Arc EP#121 (08) - League of Villains vs. U.A. Students: The Class 1-A and 1-B students led by Yaoyorozu work together to set up their trap, successfully getting Gigantomachia stuck in the ground, with the plan of forcing his mouth open and injecting a sedative into him to knock him out. They attempt to get in close to the League still on his back, but are pushed back by the villains, and literally blown away by the beast as they try to throw the sedatives inside. Dabi's fire prevents most of them from getting any closer, but using her Quirk, Mina is able to rush through to reach the beast. However, she ends up recognizing Gigantomachia from their encounter during middle school, and hesitates just long enough to miss her shot. He nearly crushes her, but is saved by Kirishima, who manages to hold onto his leg and successfully throws Mina's sedative canister into his mouth. The Pro Heroes return to battle, however everyone is stunned as Gigantomachia starts to transform his body. Meanwhile in Jaku, Shigaraki declares his conviction how heroes save people while abandoning their families, and that he is the result of them all ignoring the true problems of their society. He refuses to let up the assault, and ends up critically injuring Gran Torino, who at this time remembers back to the incident when Nana abandoned her son to save him, wondering if what they did was right. Shigaraki attempts to go after Eraser Head, but is held back by Deku and Ryukyu using all of their strength. Unbeknownst to them however, Shigaraki is in possession of a Quirk-Destroying Bullet, and uses his fingers to shoot it toward Eraser Head, hitting him in the leg.
Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun EP#11 (24) - Value: Faputa knocks Reg out and then tries to attack Riko, believing her to be the reason for his amnesia. However, her companion Gaburoon intervenes, shielding Riko and taking heavy damage in the process. Nanachi and Belaf then arrive, with Belaf allowing Faputa to attack him. As she kills him, Belaf transfers his memories of Vueko and Irumyuui to her, wishing for her to find her own value. Faputa is left confused at the new memories she has received, giving the other villagers and Nanachi time to evacuate Riko. However, with the village barrier breached, monsters from the outside begin to enter and attack the villagers. Faputa tries to repel the beasts, but is quickly overwhelmed and left near death while Gaburoon sacrifices itself to protect her. As she lay dying, several villagers come and begin feeding parts of themselves to her, transferring their value to her so she can regenerate herself. Conflicted by this show of compassion by the villagers she's supposed to destroy, Faputa fully regenerates and heads back out to challenge the monsters again.
Yashahime: The Second Act EP#47 (23) - Father and Daughter: To defeat Osamu, Towa restores her ability and destroys Kirinmaru's right arm. As Kirinmaru was about to land a hit on Sessh?maru, Sessh?maru easily overpowers Kirinmaru, unable to see it coming as the battle continues. Towa uses the Zanseiken for the final time to save Rion. Towa tells the others to carve their own fate as she uses the sword's power to save Rion from her regretful past and Osamu Kirin as she offers her body to her. Rion is now freed from her past and Osamu Kirin, but at the cost of Towa's mind as she collapses which worries Setsuna and Moroha that they truly will never see their warm-hearted relative again. If you could rewrite yashahime what would you change as far as the plot and storylines?
OH BOY THE QUESTION THAT LITERALLY EVERYONE IN THIS FANBASE HAS WONDERED SINCE S1
and this is like. actually hard for me. which is odd bc i'm so invested in Towa Higurashi's character in general and like to think a lot of her but i've never done an extensive AU idea of how to rewrite Yashahime, bc until the clustfuck of the Grim Comet Arc at the very end of S2 i was mostly fine with things i just wished they had did it better, but
Towa not bringing back Setsuna right away. i may be biased but i fucking HATE when storylines do this. when a character dies at the end of an episode or story chapter, and we don't get the next one for MONTHS later, and they're immediately brought back. Guild Wars 2 did this shit too and i HAAAATE it. i feel like it should've been active endeavor, something that should've taken 4-6 episodes to complete. there should have been a mini arc that focused on Towa's efforts to make Tenseiga truly her own sword (like Inuyasha did with Tessaiga with slaying Ryukotsusei) to be able to bring back Setsuna and allow Towa to retain ownership of Tenseiga, a sword which suits her nature more than Sesshomaru's, a sword that Sesshomaru no longer needs. Rin, Tenseiga, and Kagura were the instrumental catalysts of Sesshomaru's growth: i think it would've been incredibly fitting for his daughter, who is more oriented on helping people in general compared to her father to have proven she is a worthy holder of the sword and for it to be her's. i REALLY like Zanseiken but i think her relying primarily on Kikujumonji would've been just fine. this one gets me heated and it's not even Yashahime's fault specifically this is just a trope in writing i fucking hate. don't kill off a character at the end of a book then next year when the next book comes out they're healed in chapter 1. if i ever do this as an author i will consider this my ultimate failing
delve more into Towa's mental health. i fucking LOVED when they actually addressed "hey Towa. you're traumatized and your obsession with protecting Setsuna when she really doesn't need it and has told you that to your face is a direct result of your coping with trauma and that's not really good." i always have this little ritowa scene in my head revolving around Towa like "I want to protect everyone. That is my goal... so... why don't we compromise, Riku-kun? I'll protect everyone... and you'll protect me." like, Towa finding a more healthy middle ground for her ambitions, although i DO love that by the end, during the Grim Comet, it's explicitly clear she wants to protect everyone. maybe this was bc of the rumors of s3 getting axed but i sincerely love how we saw Towa's desires to protect evolve from just Setsuna to the whole world.
keep Kirinmaru's personality more aligned with his S1 personality, although i still like the idea of using Zanseiken or something else as a trap to kill Towa to resurrect Rion. i really love Rion and i really love how much of a dark parallel to Sesshomaru that Kirinmaru was and his own willingness to essentially betray his sense of pride and honor for his daughter, but i still think IN GENERAL AS A WHOLE he should've kept his more prideful and honorable personality. i would've loved to see him clearly disgusted with himself for how cowardly his own plan is with Towa while also refusing to stop
do more with Rion i fucking love Rion so much DO MORE WITH RION. NOBODY EVER DRAWS TOWA/RION. I WANT MORE RION CONTENT IDK WHAT IT WOULD'VE BEEN BUT I WANTED MOR RION.
give Osamu Kirin a consistent ideology and ultimate master plan. him being Towa's final boss and ultimate personal ultimate enemy when Sesshomaru deals with Kirinmaru. that fight when she has to take him on in human form was great, i just think Osamu really needed his. own ideology to be consistent (i still don't mind him having gone back on his own goals in favor of making Rion the new King however)
keep Rin's general writing more in-line with her scenes of holding Bakusaiga to her neck and standing up to Kirinmaru for the sake of the kids. idk what exactly but i would've done SOMETHING that gave her an important job that she pulled off, like something that if not done would've fucked everyone over
actually have Meido Zangetsuha be plot relevant and used once Inuyasha gets out of the pearl like Jaken said it would back in S1
Moroha getting Meido Zangetsuha somehow. Meido Zangetsuha is cool. Moroha is cool. Moroha using Meido Zangetsuha would've been really cool. it could've played into the theme of inheritance from your parents, i think!
honestly Rion being a more proper conflict as a final conflict if they delved into her personality more also would've been good, even if Osamu was the true final villain
the Tree of Ages being a villain like what was apparently originally planned. i remember once during S1 i had this entire deal where Sesshomaru had made a pact with the Tree to take both twins to the modern era in safety only for Treekyo to completely fuck him over and only do it with Towa and telling Towa to her face that in her eyes she was just a backup in case things went wrong and she always meant for Setsuna to do this shit alone basically
so yeah- i don't know how much i would absolutely rewrite, i'd just want more focus on things
