The cold, dark ocean water fell upon them like a savage beast. Its touch felt like as if the sharp blades of a thousand knives were leaving their marks on the woman's skin. But the sharp pain of the saltwater in her wounds was nothing compared to the burning sensation inside her body.
Like a ruthless force, the fire inside her tore at her guts; melted her bones and boiled her blood. She could literally feel her body turning and twisting under the heat. Her head felt like it was about to explode any second and the ear ringing howling of the alarms, which created a counterpoint to the splashing and gurgling of the icy seawater as she waded through the masses, only worsened her state. What in God's name was happening to her?
“Hang in there, okay? We'll be out of here in no time. Just keep moving,” a unfamiliar voice urged as a pair of hands kept pulling at her.
Every step felt like as if someone had put weights on the woman's ankles. Stumbling and groaning, she moved forward. The world around her was spinning. With her eyes wide open, she tried to see something in the blackness around her as she followed the unknown voice. But no matter how much she blinked, or how hard she squinted her eyes, the world around her remained dark. A wave of panic came over her.
Was she blind?
She wasn't a medic, but she could definitely tell that something was wrong with her eyes. They were burning, just like the rest of her body. The only thing she could "see" were sudden flashes of light. But these were not enough to help her find her way in her surroundings. Desorientated, presumably blind and resisting the urge to throw up, she did what the man had told her and kept walking.
“We're almost there, just hold on a little longer, yeah? We'll get you out of here.”
The woman wanted to lift her head to see who was talking to her, but she could barely muster the strength to stay on her feet. When she opened her mouth to ask the stranger what was going on, a grotesque sound came out.
'My voice! What's with my voice!?' The woman panicked, trying to reach up to feel if her throat was being ripped open. But the moment she tried to move her arm, another wave of excruciating pain rushed through her body. She let out a quiet whimper. Why did everything hurt so much? What the hell was happening to her?
“Shh, don't talk. Save your energy,” the man said in a gentle voice and carefully wrapped his arm around her shoulders. Something about the way he talked to her felt comforting.
“Come on you two! This whole thing will collapse any moment,” a second voice yelled. It sounded a lot rougher and commanding. The woman could feel the person next to her stiffen up. She half expected him to say something, but he just sighed, tightened his grip on her and began to walk faster. That caused her to let out another pained groan.
“I'm sorry,” the man mumbled and and gently squeezed her hand. “It's not far now, I promise. We're almost out.”
The woman just nodded and let the unknown man drag her through the masses of water. At first she tried to keep up with him, but the more she tried to adapt to his pace, the more her legs gave way. It was thanks to the strangers strong hold that she didn't fell to the ground.
“Shit!” The male cursed loudly before lifting the sniper onto his back. Panting and grunting under the extra weight, he began to continue his way.
Unfortunately, the sudden movement caused the woman on his back to have a coughing fit. A violent one at that.
“Hey! Hey! Don't die on me now,” the stranger barked, his voice full of panic at the blood coming from his teammate's mouth and running down his body.
Icy claws were running over the female's body as she coughed up more blood and even bits of her intestines. Something felt terribly wrong with her body. Wide eyed and with her mouth full of blood and vomit, the woman began to gasp for air.
“Let go of me!”, she tried to say, but the only sound that came out of her mouth was a gurgling scream, followed by another gush of blood.
“It's okay, I've got you. Help is on the way,” the man tried to reassure her, but it was no use. Within seconds, the injured sniper had regained enough energy to thrash and squirm on his back with such force, that he could no longer hold her and had to drop her.
With a loud »splash!« the woman fell into the ankle-deep water. The man immediately reached down to help the woman sit up. But as soon as he touched her, she aggressively swatted his hand away.
“What-”
“Stay... away from me,” the sniper managed to say before throwing up another load of blood. Tears streaming down her cheeks at the stabbing pain in her head and chest. A sudden urge to hurt the other person rose up inside her. “Please... go...” she whispered.
“I will not leave you here!”
“Not.... safe.”
'Kill him!' Another voice hissed, causing the woman to clench her fists. She had to make the other person leave, before it was too late.
Despite her warning, the male reached down and grabbed her arm, forcefully pulling her back onto her feet and sending a wave of pain and rage through the sniper's body. Making it even harder for the woman to control whatever the fuck was telling her to kill her teammate.
'Kill him! Kill him! Kill him!' The voice chanted almost joyfully. 'I know you want it too!'
'Leave me alone!'
“Let's go! We don't have much time,” the other person said and pulled at her jacket, but the sniper didn't move an inch. Leaving the man confused and worried.
'Come on, just rip out his throat, he deserves it! It's his fault after all!' With a honeyed tone the voice added: 'I just want to help you, my friend~'
The woman shook her head, trying to get that horrible voice out of her head. But all it did was making her feel more dizzy and her tormentor laugh.
'Fine then. You don't want to cooperate? Then I'll have to force you!'
The voice hadn't even faded away yet, when a red flash suddenly shot through the sniper's body. And then - as if someone had flipped a switch - the woman lost all her self-consciousness; a primal urge to kill overcame her. Only seconds later, a bloodcurdling scream rang in the woman's ears, followed by a gurgling and a sickening crushing sound. A warm, sticky liquid ran down her chin and the overwhelming stench of fresh blood made her gag.
“Forgive me...”
“Rachel?” The faint voice of a male called.
“Rachel, wake up!”
With a gasp, the woman awoke to the call of the man's voice. Her heart was pounding painfully against her ripcage and her grey eyes were wide and filled with terror as she looked around frantically. Tiny pearls of sweat, which were glistening in the yellow light, covered her forehead as she slowly came to the realisation, that she just had another one of those terrible dreams again.
“Finally, you're awake,” the man sighed and it was just now that the young woman realised, that the faint voice belonged to her younger brother.
“Jackson...” she croaked but was interrupted by a small coughing fit. Her throat felt sore, almost as if she had spend the past two hours screaming non-stop, and her lips were drier than a fucking lawn in the summer heat.
“Hang on, ima go get you some water,” the young man said and rushed out of the room; leaving Rachel with the rest of their team who was now wide awake and eyeing the young woman with curious and worried expressions. One of them, a tall man in his late twenties with short, dark brown hair and green eyes named Vitali Dogranov, walked over to her. His scarred face showing a concerned frown.
“Hey, are you okay, comrade?” Vitali asked. He was the youngest of the senior members and also Alexey's second in command.
“He, kroshka,” the lieutenant said, squatting down to get a better look at Rachel, “you know you can always talk to us when something's upsetting you, right? We're family and there to help each other.”
The woman responded with a short nod, but without looking at the slightly older man. Instead, she kept her eyes focused on the heavy blanket - which she had kicked to he foot rest of her bunk bed - and tried to somehow process that fucked up dream. That horrible scream was still ringing in her ears. Faintly, but it was there.
Vitali sighed and was about to say something when Jackson returned with the promised water. But to Rachel's dismay, he brought more than just that with him. Right behind him was their captain, Alexey Dogranov - a retired member of the Soviet Army and founder of the Special Alliance Against Terrorism, also known as S.A.A.T.
“Good morning, comrades,” Alexey greeted his team with his deep, accented voice. His bright blue eyes scanning the room.
'Fuck!' The woman thought and quickly got out of bed, trying her best not to look too worn out in front of her captain. The last thing she wanted was to raise any concerns.
“Morning captain,” the troop replied with sleepy voices, which caused Alexey to look at the team with a frown.
“Now, what's that you lazy sloths? Is this how you greet your captain? With sleep dancing on your tongues?” The older man snorted, surveying Robin Kozbi - the team's explosives expert and Jackson's best friend - through squinted eyes.
“It's almost five, where's your motivation, Coyote? This isn't a slumber party! Up! Up!” Alexey scolded the younger soldier. His loud, raspy voice, paired with his strong accent and intimidating appearance was enough to get even the laziest of them all out of bed in no time.
“Yes sir, sorry sir,” Robin, a sleek, blonde man in his mid-twenties said, as he practically jumped out of bed and almost knocked his bunk bed buddy - and the team's medic - Tyler Mulani off his feet.
“Good, now that everyone is awake and out of bed,” Alexey said and checked his watch, “training starts in fifteen minutes. I expect you to be at the training ground on time, and if you're not, then you'll do five extra push-ups for every minute you're late!” The older man warned before leaving the room.
“Here's your water,” Jackson whispered after Alexey had left and handed Rachel the glass. The woman gave her brother a grateful smile before emptying the whole thing in one go. She hadn't even realized how dehydrated she actually was.
“Alright, you heard the Cap, boys. Ten minutes. Go go go!” Vitali said sternly and watched, as the rest of the team began to gather everything they needed for the day.
“Aw man,” Robin yawned and scrubbed the back of his head. His icy blue eyes were clouded by sleep.
“Aw, were you sexting with your girlfriend again, Rob?” Jackson teased the blonde man with a grin, wich earned him a grim glare and a punch to the shoulder in return.
“Fuck off, Jack!” Robin snapped and quickly turned around to grab his clothes.
“Oooh, someone's blushiiiiiing~” Jackson chanted and had to duck to avoid getting decked in the face.
Rachel just shook her head and turned away from the quarreling duo and decided to make her bed first. As she picked up her blanket to fold it, she couldn't shake off the feeling that someone was watching her. And like so many times before, her intuition had not failed her this time either. Out of the corner of her eyes, Rachel noticed that Vitali was watching her intently.
With a raised eyebrow, the young woman turned around and mirrored the lieutenant's expression. “What's up, Vitali?” Rachel asked, knowing damn well what his problem was, but decided to act completely oblivious. Maybe there was a chance to get out of this whole thing without having to have an hour-long heart-to-heart conversation with mother hen Vitali himself. As small as it might be.
The soldier frowned a little at her question, but his voice was calm and collected. As if he were talking to a child.
“I'm worried about you, Rachel. It's not the first time this happened. Say, is something troubling you? You seem a little distracted lately.”
The laughter in the background died down immediately. Everyone was now looking at the two soldiers. Something, that annoyed Rachel but more so made her uncomfortable. She never liked being the centre of attention, so, she quickly dismissed her superior with a short wave of her hand.
“I'm fine, Vitali. I probably shouldn't have read that novel Isaac gave me. It somehow must've messed with my mind.”
Vitali raised his brow; a clear sign that he absolutely did not believe her - admittedly weak - explanation.
“You sure?” He asked more insistently. His piercing gaze practically urging her to tell the truth.
Rachel nodded and quickly folded her blanket to keep herself busy and to hide her growing discomfort. She really didn't want to cause a fuss over a stupid nightmare. She wasn't a fucking child anymore.
“Yep, I'm totally fine. Can I make my bed now, or is there more you want to ask me?”
Rachel didn't mean to sound aggressive, but since Vitali could be a bit of a pain sometimes, it was the only way to get out of this situation without sinking any further into the pit of discomfort and unwanted attention.
“Fine then,” the lieutenant sighed with a disappointed undertone and finally turned his attention to his own messy bed.
'Oh thank God!' The woman thought, threw the blanket on her bed and grabbed her clothes before hurriedly leaving the room to change in the tiny bathroom at the end of the hallway. Within five minutes, she was ready and on her way to the training ground where Alexey already awaited her.
They greeted each other with a short nod, before Rachel began to warm up her muscles by stretching them thoroughly. One by one, the others came onto the training field and just like Rachel, they also did some warm up first.
“Where are Robin and Jackson?” Alexey asked, the annoyance in his voice was unmistakable.
“Robin went to the bathroom,” Vitali reported. “But I don't know where Jackson-” the lieutenant admitted, but was interrupted by a loud, heartfelt “Fuck you, Jackson!” Followed by a familiar cackle and an even louder “I'll rip your fucking dick off!”
“Sounds like they're on the way,” Tyler stated nonchalantly, before continuing with his sit-ups.
Vitali and Alexey both sighed.
Less than ten seconds later, Jackson came running onto the field. And right behind him, a raging, drenched Robin.
“Get your ass here, dipshit!” The blonde man cursed and pulled Jackson's leg away, causing the much taller male to stumble and - after an unsuccessful and rather hilarious attempt to keep his balance - eventually fall to the ground.
Like a bunch of feral alley cats, both men rolled on the floor; one highly amused and laughing his butt off and the other red in the face from his anger and cursing loudly.
Rachel just shook her head. There really wasn't a single day where her brother did not decide to be a total menace to everyone.
Alexey, who had watched the duo with furrowed brows, took a step forward and reached down to pull Robin off his 'victim'. “All right, that's enough you two,” he scolded sternly, but Rachel did not miss the amused sparkle in his eyes.
“Ten rounds, for each of you.”
“But captain-” Robin tried to argue, but Alexey interrupted the younger man with a sharp “Ten rounds, Coyote!”
“...Yes sir.”
With that, Robin took off; Jackson joined him quickly after. And while both of them dutifully did their laps, the others formed pairs to practice their hand-to-hand combat skills; something Alexey was particular keen on. He believed, that a good soldier should never rely on his weapons only and must be able to resort to his physical abilities at all times.
“Need a partner?” Vitali asked, his lips twisted into a impish smile as he walked up to Rachel.
'Oh no.'
“More like a mortician,” Rachel replied wittily, which earned her a amused snort from the lieutenant.
“Still mad about last time, huh?”
Rachel scoffed. “Well, I can't really say I was thrilled about that dislocated shoulder.”
“Yeah, I wouldn't have been either.”
The woman rolled her eyes; she knew there was more to Vitali's offer than he was willing to admit. His tenacity was both one of his greatest strengths and his greatest weakness.
“Look, Vitali, I know how you work. I told you, I'm fine. There's no reason for you to rack your brains.”
The male's brows arose in surprise.
“Nothing gets past you, does it?” he chuckled, his green eyes sparkled with what seemed like mild embarrassment.
“It's not that hard to read you, my friend,” Rachel said and playfully flicked the lieutenant's forehead, to which he retorted with an annoyed grunt. “I could make you do fifty push-ups for your disrespectful behaviour towards your lieutenant.”
“But you won't,” Rachel replied with a daring smirk.
“Why so confident?”
“Because if you do, I'll tell Mamushka that it was you, who ate all the oreshki.” Rachel said with a triumphant grin. Checkmate.
Vitali's eyes widened and for a few seconds, he looked like one of those silly cartoon characters which elicited a soft giggle from the sniper. Vitali quickly cleared his throat and switched back to his usual calm expression. “Are you blackmailing me?”
Rachel chuckled. “Yes. I absolutely am.”
The male let out a defeated sigh. “Fine, I'll give you a pass on this one. But don't expect to get away with that attitude all the time.”
The sniper clicked her tongue. “I really wish I had that kind of daring confidence. Must be fun.”
Vitali rolled his eyes at her words and as he opened his mouth - ready to scold Rachel for her sassy attitude - another voice sounded from behind them. “Ooh Vitali, are you flirting with my sister again?” The lieutenant quickly turned around, his eyes practically glowing with anger and annoyance. “For the last time, I am not flirting with her you moron! Now shut up and do your laps, before I add ten more!”
“Oi! Cranky aren't we? Oh, by the way, you're blushing mate,” Jackson hummed and wiggled his eyebrows a little; irritating Vitali even more with that. For a brief moment, the siblings exchanged amused glances. “Run,” Rachel mouthed silently, knowing that, if her brother kept annoying their lieutenant like that, he'd be in a lot of trouble.
When Vitali - who had had enough of Jackson's teasing and ambiguous allusions - approached him, the younger of the two siblings suddenly emitted a hyena-like cackle and ran off to avoid getting whacked upside the head.
Rachel couldn't help but snort at her brother's ridiculous behaviour; or at the fact that Vitali's cheeks were indeed a tad pinker than usual. Damn, Jackson really must've hit a nerve here.
As soon as Jackson was out of earshot, Vitali let out a suffering groan. "Remind me to tell my mother that your brother is now responsible for cleaning the clogged drains."
“Only if you can defeat me,” the sniper said with a bold smirk and adjusted her stance, encouraging her training partner to do the same.
“Challenge accepted.”
The two soldiers slowly began to circle each other, careful not get too close as they tried to find a weak spot in the other's posture.
'If I fake an attack, maybe I can get him to use his arms, then I could dodge the punch and go for the solar plexus.' Rachel thought and took a small step forward. Her eyes were now fixed on Vitali's muscular arms. She knew the lieutenant was not only strong, but also quick to strike. Escaping his firm grip was nearly impossible once he got a hold of you, so, she had to be extra careful here.
“Scared, Rachel?” Vitali teased, his eyes never leaving her body as he watched her every move closely. It was obvious that he was hoping to distract her enough to make a mistake, which he could use to his advantage in return. But Rachel wasn't stupid. If Vitali really wanted to land a hit on her, he had to come up with something better than that.
“In your dreams maybe,” she replied cockily and leapt forward. Vitali, who was prepared for her attack, swerved to the side and immediately launched a counterattack. Little did he know that Rachel had foreseen that outcome and therefore was quick to react to that. Turning on her heels, she now stood face to face with the larger man. With a coy smirk on her lips and a triumphant spark in her eyes, she grabbed his fist, stopping it from landing its fatal blow.
“Surprise!” Rachel snickered and lifted her leg to hit Vitali in the guts, to which he raised his own to dodge the blow and protect the sensitive area. “Nice try, Ray,” he panted and grabbed her left arm with his free hand, catching the sniper by surprise. “But don't try to play dirty unless you know how.” With that, he tossed Rachel over his shoulder and onto the hard ground.
A stabbing pain shot through the woman's body, causing her to let out a loud, pained gasp. And as she laid there, with her eyes wide open, immobilised and unable to breathe, the memories of her dream returned. Masses of water crashing down on her; filling up her lungs and burning every inch of her body. The bitter-sweet taste of vomit and blood rose in her mouth, making her gag and shudder in disgust.
'Please. Not again.' She thought as she forced herself not to throw up. Luckily, Vitali noticed her distressed expression and immediately bent down to pull her up into a sitting position; his hand resting comfortingly on her back as he called out to Isaac to get some water.
The rest of the team stopped their training and looked over at the two soldiers, while Jackson rushed over to them.
“What's wrong?” he asked, his voice and eye filled with worry as he checked his sister for any injuries.
“We were practicing our combat skills when I performed a shoulder throw. She hit the ground pretty hard,” Vitali explained with a guilt ridden face, to which Jackson replied with a grim hum.
“Vitali!” Alexey barked, “what happened?”
The lieutenant got up and explained what had happened. Alexey listened attentively before turning to Tyler and signalling him to come over.
“Yes, sir?” the man asked and eyed Rachel through squinted eyes. Listening carefully as his captain explained the situation to him. “I understand. Jackson, would you be so kind and help your sister to the hospital wing?”
Jackson nodded, and just as he was about to help Rachel to her feet, the woman gently, but firmly pushed him away. “I'm fine,” she assured him and attempted to get up on her own. Slowly and with some effort, she managed to stand again. “I don't need a check-up, Cap.”
But Alexey, who had the welfare of his team at heart and didn't want to put up with the young sniper's stubbornness, gave her his best "I'm the captain and my word is the law"- voice. “And I say you do.”
“But-”
“That's an order, Rachel!”
The woman lowered her head in submission. “Yes sir.”
With a simple nod, Alexey dismissed Tyler and the siblings, before returning to the others, who were still watching in anticipation.
“Come on,” Jackson said and gently led his sister off the training ground.

Do you think the story of the war rape of the Midianites in inherently bigoted?
The passage you're referring to is Numbers 31. The Midianites were descendants of Avraham and his wife Keturah. Relations between Midianite and the Hebrews were good at first: Moses' wife Tzipporah was a Midianite woman, and he served Jethro for forty years. They even used Hoab, Moses' brother-in-law, as a guide through the desert. However, when the Midianites worked with the Moabites to attack and curse the children of Israel, there were mass conversions to worship Moabite deities and assimilate into Midianite culture (Numbers 25:17-19: HaShem spoke to Moses saying:  “Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader”) Midianites also severely oppressed the Israelites (In Judges: “Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help”)
So, with that background, you're talking specifically about this passage:
"Why have you kept all the women alive?" demanded Moses. "These are exactly the ones who were involved with the Israelites at Balaam's instigation, causing them to be unfaithful to God in the Peor incident, and bringing a plague on God's community. Now kill every male child, as well as every woman who has been involved intimately with a man. However, all the young girls who have not been involved intimately with a man, you may keep alive for yourselves."
The story in the Bible is that the women were part of a larger campaign to convert the Israelites to their religion and culture. It was working, so HaShem instructed Moses to stand up against them. It is a lesson against assimilation into idolatry. Were there problematic parts of the Hebrew Bible? Of course to modern standards they are, and they're not events that should be repeated. No one is arguing there are not parts of the Torah that are problematic.
But none of that is what you actually care about. This ask is a response to my assertion that Christian texts are antisemitic, which they are. I responded to an ask that essentially asked "If Christian texts are antisemitic, what should they use instead?" to which I said they're not going to use another text, they just need to acknowledge that the ones they use are antisemitic and call out antisemitism within their communities when they see it.
If your response to a Jew calling out antisemitism is "Well what about you!" your problem is deeper than one I can solve.

41. Parsha Pinchas. "The Oracle." From Numbers 25:10-30:1.
Pinchas AKA Phineas means "the brass mouth".
Tumblr media
*Brass* is the most reflective surface mentioned in the Torah, one in which man can face himself. The mouth that speaks the truth is pinchas, the brass mouth one we want to listen to because it bring salvation to the self.
Recall from Parsha Balak, to whom to listen was an issue:
In the middle of the Big Sojourn from Egypt, after Moses told the Column of Israel it was time to visualize the future, a civilization called Canaan, a place of vineyards, orchards and plenty to go around, the people refuse, and are besieged by strife.
The Spear of Government enters the picture and forces the issue. Civilization and the Fruits of its Actions, yes, strife and "talkers" no. God's anger at the Israelites over their lack of conviction about this mounts but resolves itself as this Parsha begins:
The Lord said to Moses,
11 “Phinehas "the oracle" son of Eleazar "God has helped", the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”
14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri "musician, song of Yah" son of Salu "maker of highways" , the leader of a Simeonite "law abiding" family. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi "a liar" daughter of Zur, "rock" a tribal chief of a Midianite "cavilers" family.
16 The Lord said to Moses, 17 “Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor "dirty hole" incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”
-> When you have intercourse in the dirty hole with lying bitch and make a crying, shitty baby, God, He getteth angry.
Ears get dirty too...the liar, the daughter of a complainer, sullied the ears of a song maker, an Israelite and both were cast out. No sing along songs with lies in their verses, please.
The Oracle showed up and explained how killing liars and the lying cunts they schcrew with is essential if the future is to be born pristine, a reflection of the past from which it came.
The Second Census
26 After the plague the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, 2 “Take a census of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army of Israel.” 3 So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said, 4 “Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the Lord commanded Moses.”
-> I think these are the Traits associated with the First Two Commandments and or the first Two Days. The Rabbi from the Chabad.org essay says 20 years of age are the minimum for the Age of Reason, and this corresponds with both, but read the actual definitions before drawing conclusions:
These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt:
5 The descendants of Reuben the Leader, the firstborn son of Israel, were:
through Hanok, "inauguration."  the Hanokite clan;
through Pallu, "distinguished."  the Palluite clan;
6 through Hezron, "village" the Hezronite clan;
through Karmi, "the vineyard." the Karmite clan.
7 These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.
There are 12 Second Generations of Israel, according to the Torah and 12 more Root Tantras associated with the end of the Sojourn into Canaan:
"Distinguished leaders alone should be inaugurated. Those that cluster men together in villages like grapes in the vineyard by telling the truth. They exalt God the Most High and follow the Decrees [instead of worshipping liars as if they were gods.] "
8 The son of Pallu "distinguished" was Eliab "God is my father", 9 and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel* "God is with us", Dathan "decree, or a well" and Abiram "father of loftiness" .
The same Dathan and Abiram were the community officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the Lord. 10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah "to make bald, to mark", whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men. And they served as a warning sign. 11 The line of Korah, however, did not die out.
->The earth swallowing the rebels means time passed and left bodies in its wake, but history, unchanged, went on to become an era, one that did not look promising because of strife so the government used "a spear" and cut it off in it tracks.
What happens in an era must be clearly ascertained at all times, sans religion, politics, any kind of dogma. Should strife surface, any kind of proposed agitation from within politics or the polity, the government, so the Torah says needs to resort to its Principals and shut it down at once.
Rebellious Community Officials, the Torah says, are not to be tolerated.
*Probably a form of immanuel.
12 The descendants of Simeon "law abiding" by their clans were:
through Nemuel, "Day of God." the Nemuelite clan;
through Jamin "the Right Hand in the Southern Direction." , the Jaminite clan;
through Jakin "He will establish, give certainty", the Jakinite clan;
13 through Zerah "rising dawn", the Zerahite clan;
through Shaul "asked for" , the Shaulite clan.
14 These were the clans of Simeon; those numbered were 22,200.
"The descendants of Law abiding citizens give certainty as the Right Hand of God, they are what God asked for."
15 The descendants of Gad "exposed treasure" by their clans were:
through Zephon, "Lord of the Hidden Things, Lord of the North." the Zephonite clan;
through Haggi, "festival." the Haggite clan;
through Shuni, "of the tooth" the Shunite clan;
16 through Ozni, "He gives my ear" the Oznite clan;
through Eri, "concentrated on yah" the Erite clan;
17 through Arodi,[a] "fugitive, wild ass" the Arodite clan;
through Areli, "gathered by God" the Arelite clan.
18 These were the clans of Gad; those numbered were 40,500.
"They expose the future not through divination (as with Balak) but by listening to the Speaker, who gives my ear, a fugitive, all the knowledge God has given us in the past."
19 Er "a city, aroused" and Onan "vigor, from trouble" were sons of Judah "praise", but they died in Canaan.
20 The descendants of Judah by their clans were:

This belief pays dividends to everyone."
51 The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.
52 The Lord said to Moses, 53 “The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names. 54 To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those listed.
55 Be sure that the land is distributed by lot. What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe. 56 Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups.”

(Kohath "to obey" was the forefather of Amram "enthralled"; 59 the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed "Yah is impressive", a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites[e] in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses and their sister Miriam. 60 Aaron was the father of Nadab "to donate" and Abihu "Father's house" Eleazar "God is my help" and Ithamar "palm tree coast". 61 But Nadab and Abihu died when they made an offering before the Lord with unauthorized fire.)
="Enthrallment with all Yah has made should inspire obedience. To be enamored of creation and its provisions is the remedy to slavery to want, to the god of Egypt"
62 All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000. They were not counted along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance among them.
=Men good, women bad.
63 These are the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab "strife" by the Jordan "the descendant" across from Jericho "fragrant place". 64 Not one of them was among those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai "I brought you to me". 65 For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb "faithful" son of Jephunneh "Beholds" and Joshua " deliverer" son of Nun "faith".
="To behold God, the source of all happiness, is all the help one needs."
Zelophehad’s Daughters
27 The daughters of Zelophehad "ruptures fear" son of Hepher "dig, shame", the son of Gilead "testimony stones" , the son of Makir "to know", the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. Whose daughters names were Mahlah "disease" , Noah "respite, from violence", Hoglah "partridge", Milkah "queen of counsel" and Tirzah "Goodwill"
= "The Ephod, the imprint of the Principals upon the current generation by those of the past ruptures fear and digs out the shame, reveals it and allows us to put it behind us. The call of goodwill ends the diseases, provides respite from violence."
They came forward 2 and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, 3 “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s "bald, frosty, without intelligence" followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. 4 Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”
5 So Moses brought their case before the Lord, 6 and the Lord said to him, 7 “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.
="You may not leave a land that is war torn and in a state of upheaval to future generations to figure out."
8 “Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. 9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”
=see my notes below on how to interpret the Offerings.
Joshua to Succeed Moses
12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim "across the Jordan" Range and see the land I have given the Israelites. 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin "thorns, dry place", both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh "Holy place of strife, in the Desert of Zin.)
=We must leave whatever it is that causes strife on our world behind. We have to "cross the Jordan" into Canaan, an era where the Principals named in the Censes rule the land.
This is not an option. We are indentured to this by the Maker of Heaven and Earth, their Owner and Supreme Governor.
15 Moses said to the Lord,
16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,[f] and lay your hand on him. 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim "the Fire" before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”
22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the Lord instructed through Moses.
Daily Offerings
Epahs are "glooms" or sins that are diametrically opposite the Commandments. All sin comes from sins against the First Commandment. The following says if you offer a hin "a little Grace" in response to an ephah, things turn out all right.
Food = what you read, study, learn, the substance that is eked from the company you keep. If you eat a nasty creep or a freak, for example you simply won't eke.
Grains= raw ideas, swear words, lies, "inedible, not digestible."
Flour + oil= words, books, sciences, arts, creations that come from civilized persons and institutions. These we are indeed to consume.
Aromas= thoughts, words, deeds that honor the Decrees.
Olives= grown like libraries and schools and governments only by secure, stable and civilized persons.
Fermented Drinks= wine, also the product of civilization. Any jackass can squeeze a grape. The process of fermentation and serving the juice in a glass, from a bottle, both of which are sitting on a table around which sit your family, friends and guests is the culmination of the work of a firmly fluent and prosperous host.
Lambs are idiots, but willing to go with the flow.
Bulls are persons possessed of the personalities of toddlers.
Rams are arrogant, stubborn, egoistic.
Goats are hairy lads that have finally grown up. When we sacrifice a goat, or any animal for that matter we are putting him to work, applying effort equivalent to those listed in the Torah Tantras.
Days and nights: today vaults yesterday from tomorrow and don't you forget it. History lasts but a day, and if it wasn't a good one, then that day must come to an end and never repeat itself.
= "Boys are like Kleenexes. A fresh one should come out of the box every time."
Tenths: any kind of tenth refers to one or more of the Decrees. Two tenths = the Second Commandment. Three Tenths= the Third, etc.
Days, months numbers of animals by species: It's too complicated to create every set here but if you are so moved, all you have to do is look at the Day of the Week, which is a stage of evolution between troubling or unformed moments in life and their resolution in some newly enlightened place in life.
Take each scenario and recipe and decode according to the key I have provided and you will see the different ways the Torah can be used to put an end to all those bleak yesterdays.
ex. Food offerings are teachings that feed the intellect. A pleasing one would be a language class instead of a comic book. Two lambs a year old are two perfect days spent offering Grace (hin) instead of strife to repair some damage done by violating a Commandment, something called an Ephah and bringing upset to another person.
Contemplate the wrongs, ask the person out for food or a cocktail, bring yourself back into their graces and this will achieve Sinai, "unity with God".
Sometimes sins are cooked up, others are burnt or washed away, there are sacrifices of ignorance in exchange for incense, each offering places different evolutionary pressures on self and society in order to get them to comply with the expectations named in the Torah.
28 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Give this command to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Make sure that you present to me at the appointed time my food offerings, as an aroma pleasing to me.’ 3 Say to them: ‘This is the food offering you are to present to the Lord: two lambs a year old without defect, as a regular burnt offering each day. 4 Offer one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight, 5 together with a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah[g] of the finest flour mixed with a quarter of a hin[h] of oil from pressed olives. 6 This is the regular burnt offering instituted at Mount Sinai as a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord.
7 The accompanying drink offering is to be a quarter of a hin of fermented drink with each lamb. Pour out the drink offering to the Lord at the sanctuary. 8 Offer the second lamb at twilight, along with the same kind of grain offering and drink offering that you offer in the morning. This is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.
Sabbath Offerings
9 “‘On the Sabbath day, make an offering of two lambs a year old without defect, together with its drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah[i] of the finest flour mixed with olive oil. 10 This is the burnt offering for every Sabbath, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.
Monthly Offerings
11 “‘On the first of every month, present to the Lord a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 12 With each bull there is to be a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah[j] of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; 13 and with each lamb, a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil. This is for a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord. 14 With each bull there is to be a drink offering of half a hin[k] of wine; with the ram, a third of a hin[l]; and with each lamb, a quarter of a hin. This is the monthly burnt offering to be made at each new moon during the year. 15 Besides the regular burnt offering with its drink offering, one male goat is to be presented to the Lord as a sin offering.[m]
The Passover
16 “‘On the fourteenth day of the first month the Lord’s Passover is to be held. 17 On the fifteenth day of this month there is to be a festival; for seven days eat bread made without yeast. 18 On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. 19 Present to the Lord a food offering consisting of a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 20 With each bull offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, two-tenths; 21 and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth. 22 Include one male goat as a sin offering to make atonement for you. 23 Offer these in addition to the regular morning burnt offering. 24 In this way present the food offering every day for seven days as an aroma pleasing to the Lord; it is to be offered in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering. 25 On the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.
The Festival of Weeks
26 “‘On the day of firstfruits, when you present to the Lord an offering of new grain during the Festival of Weeks, hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. 27 Present a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram and seven male lambs a year old as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. 28 With each bull there is to be a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, two-tenths; 29 and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth. 30 Include one male goat to make atonement for you. 31 Offer these together with their drink offerings, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its grain offering. Be sure the animals are without defect.
The Festival of Trumpets
29 “‘On the first day of the seventh month hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. It is a day for you to sound the trumpets. 2 As an aroma pleasing to the Lord, offer a burnt offering of one young bull, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 3 With the bull offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah[n] of the finest flour mixed with olive oil; with the ram, two-tenths[o]; 4 and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth.[p] 5 Include one male goat as a sin offering[q] to make atonement for you. 6 These are in addition to the monthly and daily burnt offerings with their grain offerings and drink offerings as specified. They are food offerings presented to the Lord, a pleasing aroma.
The Day of Atonement
7 “‘On the tenth day of this seventh month hold a sacred assembly. You must deny yourselves[r] and do no work. 8 Present as an aroma pleasing to the Lord a burnt offering of one young bull, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 9 With the bull offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, two-tenths; 10 and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth. 11 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the sin offering for atonement and the regular burnt offering with its grain offering, and their drink offerings.
The Festival of Tabernacles
12 “‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. Celebrate a festival to the Lord for seven days. 13 Present as an aroma pleasing to the Lord a food offering consisting of a burnt offering of thirteen young bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 14 With each of the thirteen bulls offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; with each of the two rams, two-tenths; 15 and with each of the fourteen lambs, one-tenth. 16 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
17 “‘On the second day offer twelve young bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 18 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 19 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering, and their drink offerings.
20 “‘On the third day offer eleven bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 21 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 22 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
23 “‘On the fourth day offer ten bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 24 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 25 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
26 “‘On the fifth day offer nine bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 27 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 28 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
29 “‘On the sixth day offer eight bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 30 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 31 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
32 “‘On the seventh day offer seven bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 33 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 34 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
35 “‘On the eighth day hold a closing special assembly and do no regular work. 36 Present as an aroma pleasing to the Lord a food offering consisting of a burnt offering of one bull, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 37 With the bull, the ram and the lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 38 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
39 “‘In addition to what you vow and your freewill offerings, offer these to the Lord at your appointed festivals: your burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings and fellowship offerings.’”
40 Moses told the Israelites all that the Lord commanded him.[s]
Vows
30 [t]Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel: “This is what the Lord commands."
Thus ends Parsha Pinchas, "the Oracle" numbered 41 of 54 contained in the Holy Torah.
*Mentions of brass in the Torah also certainly date it past 250 BCE. Brass, unfortunately, was mainstreamed by Rome and used to make those spiffy helmets the boys all liked to wear after they volunteered for the Legion.

1While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, 2who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the Lord’s anger burned against them.
4The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the Lord, so that the Lord’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”
5So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”
6Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand 8and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; 9but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.
10The Lord said to Moses, 11“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. 13He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”
14The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family. 15And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.
16The Lord said to Moses, 17“Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. 18They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”

The Second Census - Numbers 25-27
Synopsis: The Israelites were in Shittim (in plains of Moab). The Israelite men "began to indulge in sexual immorality" with Moabite women and made sacrifices to their god (Baal of Peor). This made God angry. He told Moses to kill the leaders. Moses ordered the judges to kill those who worshiped the Baal of Peor. An Israelite man (Zimri, son of the leader of the Simeon tribe) brought a Midianite woman (Kozbi, daughter of a Midianite tribal chief) to Phinehas (son of Eleazar, the head priest). Phinehas stabbed both of them and God ended the plague that had killed 24,000 Israelites. God told Moses to kill the Midianites because they deceived them with idols.
There was a second census since the Exodus where all of the men over 20 were counted. The results of the first can be found here. Here are the results of the second census. Land was allotted to tribes based on their population. The only men still living from the first census to this point were Moses, Joshua, and Caleb.
Tribe of Reuben - 43,730
Tribe of Simeon - 22,200
Tribe of Gad - 40,500
Tribe of Judah - 76,500
Tribe of Issachar - 64,300
Tribe of Zebulun - 60,500
Tribe of Manasseh - 52,700
Tribe of Ephraim - 32,500
Tribe of Benjamin - 45,600
Tribe of Dan - 64,400
Tribe of Asher - 53,400
Tribe of Naphtali - 45,400
Total - 601,730
Tribe of Levi (Separate, no inheritance) - 23,000
Grand Total Israelites - 624,730
The daughters of Zelophehad (in the tribe of Manassah, in the tribe of Joseph) requested to receive Zelophehad's inheritance because he died without any sons. Moses asked God, and God made the following line of succession for property of men.
Sons
Daughters
Brothers
Father's brothers
Nearest relative
God told Moses to go up a mountain in the Abarim range to see the Promised Land. Moses would be "gathered to his people" before entering the Promised Land because of the Israelites rebellion in the Desert of Zin. God chose Joshua (son of Nun) to succeed Moses. Moses, Eleazar, and Joshua went up the mountain. Moses laid his hand on Joshua, in front of Eleazar, to transfer his authority.
Christian takeaways: God takes his commandments seriously. The Israelites broke two of the Ten Commandments (you shall not bow down before idols and you shall not commit adultery). Because of this, God punished the Israelites with a plague. There is a lesson in remaining pure and faithful to God in this story. God was progressive for the time by allowing women to inherit property.
My takeaways now: God's jealousy is not a good trait. He kills a lot of people for not giving Him enough attention. This is not the loving God that Christians like to advertise. It even goes beyond the "eye for an eye" standard of the Old Testament. This also not a peaceful cohabitation of cultures of Israelites and Midianites as portrayed in "The Prince of Egypt". I don't know enough about history to determine how progressive the inheritance law in Numbers 27 for the time period, but I know it is very limited and still heavily favors men. The confusion between Moabites and Midianites in Chapter 25 is strange. My understanding is that this was the result of combining stories. I still think the imagery of Moses being "gathered to his people" is beautiful. Even though I don't believe in an afterlife anymore, I believe a similar metaphor could be said about establishing a legacy with one's ancestors. Moses was about to join Joseph, Jacob, Abraham, etc. as legends of the Israelites. Today, thousands of years later, he's still a symbol for hope for delivering people from hardships.

Numbers 25
This short chapter is intense. Even though it isn’t mentioned in the two previous chapters, it is evident by other passages in Scripture that Balaam advised Balak and the Moabites to lure Israelite men into sexual immorality with Moabite women, get them to sacrifice to their gods, and thereby yoke Israel to Baal.  The Moabite strategy worked.  Israelite men succumbed, YHWH’s “anger burned against them,” and a great plague came upon the Israelites. The people of Israel were weeping and mourning, presumably those killed by the plague, and an Israelite man (Zimri) and Midianite woman (Kozbi) brashly went into the tent of meeting, right past the mourners. Phinehas, a priest and grandson of Aaron, followed the couple into the tent and thrusted his spear through the man and into the woman—one thrust, 2 kills. And because of Phinehas’ act, YHWH’s anger was turned away from the Israelites and the deadly plague ended, but not before killing 24,000. YHWH made a covenant of peace with Phinehas, ensuring a lasting priesthood in his lineage.  Psalms 106:30-31 tells us this act “was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come.”  These “generations” would eventually include the priest and prophet, Ezra. Let’s go back to verse 4:
“YHWH said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the Lord, so that the YHWH’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”
This verse describes a practice common in the ancient Near East whereby a person convicted of a capital crime would be killed by impalement on a pole (kill = impale; expose in broad daylight = hang up, exposed to the elements). Sometimes the person was placed on the pole, tree, wall etc. post-mortem (e.g. Saul’s sons:2 Samuel 21:5-9,  various enemy kings: Joshua 8:29 & 10:26) and displayed as an example to others and to humiliate the condemned.  At other times the condemned would be nailed to the pole or tree and left to die by exposure. Deuteronomy 21:22-23 specifically references this practice, requiring the body of the condemned to be removed from the pole by nightfall and buried. Does this sound familiar? It should. The Romans perfected crucifixion but they didn’t invent it. This practice predates the Roman Empire by centuries.  Jesus was condemned and impaled on a pole as well.  He was killed so YHWH’s fierce anger would be turned away from us. The big difference: unlike these clan leaders in Israel, Jesus did nothing to deserve punishment.  He took our place on the pole. The similarity of Jesus’ death on a cross with ancient Near East practices of impalement was not lost on Jews of that time including the Apostle Paul.
“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.’ He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”  Galatians 3:13-14

Shabat Shalom.

MATTOT-A Flagrant Demotion
The Torah tells us about the battle against Midian[1]:“They killed the kings of Midian along with their slain ones: Evi, Rekem, Tzur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian; and Bilaam the son of Beor they slew with the sword.”
When the Jewish people defeated the Midianite armies, we read a name with which we are vaguely familiar: Tzur. His first appearance in the Torah was on Parashat Chukat, as the father of Kozbi bat Tzur (Balak), the woman with whom Zimri sinned publicly.
The Midrash Tanchuma tells us that Tzur was the greatest of the five Midianite kings, but he was demoted and appears third in the Torah’s listing of the Midianite kings because he readily sent his daughter to commit a vile, immoral act in public.
We have to wonder when we read such a midrash: does Tzur really care? Does it bother him in the least if the Torah lists the Midianite kings and places him third instead of first?
A similar question strikes us when we read a midrash in Parashat Chaye Sarah. In one of the pesukim describing Avraham’s purchase of Mearat HaMachpelah (See Bereshit 23:16 with Rashi), Ephron’s name is written without the letter vav. The midrash tells us that Ephron lost the vav because of his deceitful conduct in the sale of Mearat HaMachpelah.
As in the case of Tzur, again we have to wonder: does Ephron care? When we read the parashah, it is obvious that Ephron was a particularly greedy person, who was far more concerned about the amount of money he could derive from Avraham Avinu than with the number of letters he merits in the Torah.
The truth is that these questions stem from a false perception that most of us have to some extent.
As long as we are here in olam hazeh, the physical world seems so real and tangible to us and Olam Haba (the World to Come) seems so far off that we consider the physical world a reality and the spiritual world somewhat intangible and almost fantastic.
In the physical world, one can blatantly ignore or shrug off even the greatest of insults. In Olam Haba, however, all the false illusions of “the Real World” are exposed. Every single person, even a person who had no spiritual values in this world, suddenly realizes that spirituality is all that matters. The Torah, the source of all spirituality, is the only entity that the souls in Heaven bother contemplating.
As long as they were here on earth, Tzur and Ephron would have laughed loudly if we would have told them that they were being punished by being mentioned disparagingly in the Torah.
As they look down now — or up, as the case may be — from their rightful spot in the next world, Tzur and Ephron suffer extreme anguish because of their stinging demotion[2]. ____________________________ [1] Bemidbar 31:8 [2] On the other hand we may say that the vast majority of people at some extent understand that spirituality is extremely important but they are blinded by the physical world.
