Closeup details of an Ares illustration entry that I made for my Sing O Muse zine contribution last year. Ares, in my version, is often hanging out with Aphrodite and the Graces, Hera + her daughters, and Poseidon the most, either for his warrior bodyguard duty or just running casual errands in his home. Zine is out now, so you better check them out and grab them while you can since they are still piping hot from fresh printing !!!!

The temple background was that of Aphrodite Ourania in Kythera, one of the oldest structures dedicated to her located in mainland Greece dated from the 6th century BC, which was later converted into Agioi Anargyroi church (St. Cosmas & Damian) during Byzantine times.
According to legend, Aphrodite was born from the sea foam stranding to the seashores of Alvemonas Bay of Kythera first before arriving in Paphos, Cyprus. Aphrodite Ourania, as in her “heavenly love” aspect was depicted as an armed warrior goddess within this modest temple right here, and there are still fully preserved walls + niches within the current ruined building along with its Doric columns!!!!

Over on the sight of the divine couple is another chryselephantine statue of Aphrodite Ourania herself, with her foot standing on a tortoise. Made out of gold & ivory, with black stone eyes and carved by the famed Phidias who was known for the Athena Parthenos and Athena Promachos in the Parthenon, Athens; as well as the statue of Zeus of Olympia. (I knew that this statue of Aphrodite Ourania would later be transferred to Elis, in the further northern region of Arcadia, but I still loved it to be standing there, tbh.)

Tokens I made for Kythira, the Bronze Dragon in both Humanoid (Nereid) and Dragon form. Her design goes hard on the idea that Bronze Dragons are aquatic and I gave her some Shark features in both designs. I really like how it turned out.

Kythera is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, southwest of the Peloponnese. It is known for its picturesque villages, beautiful beaches and rich history.
Here are some of the places you can visit in Kythira:
Chora: The capital of the island, Chora, is a picturesque town with traditional houses, narrow streets and an impressive Venetian citadel.
Mylopotamos: A traditional village with beautiful houses and a square with plane trees.
Kalami: A picturesque fishing village with a beautiful beach.
Firi Ammos: One of the most popular beaches of the island, with golden sand and crystal clear waters.
Halkos: A secluded beach with white sand and turquoise waters.
Myrtidiotissa Monastery: A holy monastery dating back to the 12th century.
Venetian Castle: A well-preserved Venetian castle with a panoramic view of the island.
In addition to the above, in Kythira you can also go hiking, cycling, swimming, fishing and diving.
Here are some tips to help you plan your trip to Kythira:
The best time to visit Kythira is from spring to autumn.
You can reach Kythira by plane or by boat.
There are many hotels, rooms for rent and apartments on the island.
To move around the island you can rent a car, motorbike or bicycle.
I wish you a wonderful time in Kythira!

This week’s newsletter from AthensLive is out:
*   Nazi salute in courtroom goes unpunished
*   Two deadly shipwrecks
*   The good news of the week
- are the main headlines to be found inside this highly informative weekly must-read from and about Greece.
The Golden Dawn trial at second degree has resumed after a summer break. This week’s hearings were marked by the testimony of the murdered antifascist Pavlos Fyssas’s mother, Magda, and the nazi salute of a Golden Dawn defense lawyer. On the same day, neonazis attacked leftists and pupils in an Athenian suburb.
Two boats carrying migrants sank off the shores of two Greek islands on Wednesday night. Dozens were left dead, with bodies floating at sea even two days after the shipwreck.
At Kythira island, though, a rescue operation set up by citizens and local authorities, who literally improvised, managed to save some 80 lives. The contribution of one citizen, in particular, proved most critical.
By reading the newsletter - and even better by subscribing or becoming a supporting member - you will also find a lot of links to other sources and to events and developments that you will not otherwise come across. And even if some of them are in Greek only, by using a Translator in your browser, it will be easy to read no matter how familiar you are with the Greek language.
It cannot be recommended strongly enough to read and share this week’s updates on the events and developments in Greece here:

For anyone with a wish or need to follow and to gain an insight into recent events in Greece and to read and support independent and investigative journalism in English, the weekly newsletter from AthensLive should be a core element in the reading flow.
If you want the best overview of the events and developments in Greece right now, this is the place to go. Not the mainstream Greek news, but independent journalism with sharp analysis and links to interesting and important topics from a variety of sources.
