hiya! how about things you said that i wasn’t meant to hear + ningcheng for the ask game?
"A-jie, Zixuan-ge, I'm here again." Jiang Cheng's voice is soft, and Wen Ning wants to leave, but... but Wei Wuxian had asked him to watch out for Jiang Cheng. Even when Wei Wuxian doesn't put any power behind his words, it's still difficult to disobey. Wen Ning should tell him, but wouldn't Wei Wuxian feel bad? So he stays.
The Jin ancestral hall is nothing like the Jiang clan's. Engulfed in gold, Jiang Cheng is a point of darkness kneeling before grandeur.
"I'm not sure what that brat a-Ling has told you, so..." Jiang Cheng describes the past few months of Jin Ling's life--a notable night hunt, a well-negotiated treaty, the fight for the watchtowers. He tells them that Jin Ling has grown again, and that he's almost taller than Jiang Cheng already. That his friends are sweet, annoying, and promising. That he very obviously maneuvered so that Jiang Cheng would have to take care of Fairy while he studies in Cloud Recesses, because it would be 'so helpful, jiujiu.' He pauses. "He's such a good boy, a-jie."
He laughs, self-mocking. "Your a-Xian, though." Wen Ning should leave! "Your a-Xian has bewitched Lan Qiren's perfect, dutiful nephew, which is somehow something he thought I should be advised of. Not one personal letter in almost eighteen years, and this is what he thinks I want to know? Your didi was responsible, though, and he did not describe every imperfect act by Hanguang-jun. So, you see, I am still diplomatic."
Jiang Cheng curls down, perfect posture forgotten. His hands grip the skirts of his robes. Wen Ning can't see his face. After a few silent moments, he adds, "Jin Ling says that your a-Xian is gaining weight. So he must be eating something, even if it is bland."
The silence of the ancestral hall presses in.
"I wish..." Jiang Cheng whispers. "I wish..."
But then he shakes his head and wipes his face. "I'll visit again soon."

hi! zhanchengxian for the ask game?
Ship It
What made you ship it?
Awful people should stick together <3. No, seriously lol, initially I didn't ship them, but I read one fic that made me consider them as a thing ( pillow talk by sugar_shoal). And I figured out that I enjoy their dynamic!
What are your favorite things about the ship?
Putting in a room people who have caused each other great harm and watch what will happen is my jam tbh. I like how all of them have to struggle to be together! We have jc's insecurities and grief, wwx's aversion to open vulnerability and his resentment, lwj's stubbornness and pettiness... So juicy!
Like, how do they get there? How do they reach a point of balance? How do you reconcile wwx's deflecting mannerisms, jc's snapping attitude and lwj's selective mutism? imo wangxian works so well (novel canon) because there isn't history, there aren't dead bodies or broken promises or broken comradeship. But, with jc in the mixer, we have it all! They can get on each other nerves (lwj, jc), bring the worst out of each other (jc, wwx) and enable each other worst traits (lwj, wwx). We can have interesting dynamics! They can heal each other wounds or they can cut deeper each other even more... It's so interesting!
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
Mmmm. Idk even know what is unpopular here lol, but, I do think that if zhancheng happens during wwx's death, canon is different! While I emphasize with the desire of skipping the hassle of changing canon, and like, people can be into whatever, imo, to have the characters ring true to me, things have to be different!
If lwj has an affair with jc, I don't think he won't fall in love/be softer with him! If they have occasional hook up, fine, but a whole ass (sexual) relationship? He's going to catch some feelings! My interpretation of lwj's character is that, despite his cold demeanor, he's soft and squishy inside! He's prone to love! He's going to understand and emphasize with jc! Cql!lwj is already doing an half attempt at encouraging a yunmeng bros reconciliation, but a lwj who has been ball deep inside jc? Who knows that jc is cruel and snapping, but who knows that jc is much more too? Canon changes imo. (again, I fully understand people who don't want to touch canon)
(I am not talking about jc because it's obvious that he's having feelings for lwj. He's also very mad at all of them!)
(and, if they have a relationship but jc -feeling too much exposed, not used anymore at someone really watching him, doting on him- lashes out and breaks their 'arrangement'... Then yeah, lwj could be even worse than in canon imo lol)
Also, mmm, while zhancheng is mostly about wwx (and it should be like that!), lwj was very much dumped back then during the war. jc was his first real friend! They understood each other! They were a team! They were on the same page! And jc dumped him :-/

What do you like about jc? Why he is your favorite?
Anon, this has been sitting in my inbox because I was afraid to open this can of worms. I've rotated this character nonstop for, like, the past three years. I got on Tumblr because of this character. I'm not even that wild about MDZS as a novel! I'm a SVSSS main! I don't know how I ended up here!
He loves his nephew so much. I love what we get about Jiang Cheng's relationship with Jin Ling, who had what was probably an indescribably weird childhood, but who has never once thought to himself that his uncle didn't love him. Jin Ling is evidently spoiled and rude but also so genuinely courageous, forgiving, and loving in his horrible teenage way. I love these two and they love each other!
He's dutiful. I think people sometimes think of duty as a burden, and obviously it can be, but I also think of it as an expression of care towards others. He sincerely cares about his responsibilities, which include all of the people who joined the Jiang sect to follow him.
He's supremely competent. We see the poor guy fail a lot, but he restored a massacred sect to Great Sect status in 13-15 years with what seems like no familial support and no apparent close external connections. He must be really, really good at his job.
He's such a bitch. He's here to make things hard and unpleasant on purpose! He's witty and will say the meanest possible thing he can think of in a fight! Just like his mother, he can sense your insecurities like a bloodhound and tear into them at will! I think this is a good and endearing quality (for a character, obviously).
He is profoundly screwed by the narrative. Dude is, as @winepresswrath puts it, "ontologically cursed." He exists to fail. His creator made him the most determined little toaster and then put him in 1000 unwinnable situations. He is trapped in, like, a bespoke torment matrix, that he only really escapes at the end of canon (dignity in tatters but nephew in hand).
Killer style in CQL and maybe also the donghua from what I've seen of the gifs? Fashionable king. Deeply uncool despite the drip, which endears him to me more.
Wang Zhuocheng's crying face. Yes, it's that gif set again. It haunts my dreams.

hiya! chengning for the ship meme?
Tumblr media
The thing about chengning is that THE INSTANT Jiang Cheng became aware of Wen Ning's existence, Wei Wuxian immediately compared them, saying Jiang Cheng, Guy Who Earns Love By Being Good, wasn't as good as Wen Ning at archery. How could they be friends then? The next time Jiang Cheng is conscious around Wen Ning, he was just tortured by Wen Ning's cousin (possibly while Wen Ning watched); before Jiang Cheng can process anything, Wen Qing puts him--a coreless torture victim--into a coma.
(Does anyone else think about how hungry he was when he woke up! How weak his legs were! How many aches he had deep in his bones!! While Wei Wuxian lied to him over and over again that his core could be restored?)
Jiang Cheng is blindfolded and pretending to be someone else the next time Wen Ning sees him. Wen Ning stays silent, but what was he thinking? He'd had those days of bonding and planning with Wei Wuxian, those days of travel with Wen Qing, to think about what was going to happen to Wei Wuxian. He knew about damage to lower dantians, and how most people don't recover. He knew, too, that Wei Wuxian was insistent that Jiang Cheng needed his cultivation to live; that Jiang Cheng is so competitive that he'd never be able to survive like this; because that's what Wei Wuxian told him.
Wen Ning doesn't know the dynamic between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian is, at its best, best friends/brothers/sword and shield; he doesn't know they finish each other's sentences and protect each other from harm. Wen Ning, raised as the meek brother of a favored maternal cousin to Wen Ruohan, has seen every vice of the powerful. Does he look at Wei Wuxian and see a livelier Wen Zhuliu, equally bound to serve Jiang Cheng regardless of his own morals and thoughts? Does he look at Jiang Cheng and see a more circumspect Wen Chao?
What a perfect, tragic form of fealty it must have seemed to him. How noble and giving of Wei Wuxian, to not even want credit! Especially to give anything to him, that awful loud boy bursting with pride. (Different of course from Wei Wuxian's pride, since Wei Wuxian is so marvelous!)
Then, what, maybe Wen Ning is conscious while chengxian break up, and Jiang Cheng says Wei Wuxian would probably only have to give up some of the Wen remnants to save the rest? Wen Ning doesn't know that Jiang Cheng tried to defend Wei Wuxian to the other sects, and he certainly doesn't know that Jiang Cheng had no idea what had become of the Wen. He doesn't know that Jiang Cheng, who had barely been conscious, still remembered who had helped him; still spoke up for the Wen siblings. If he was aware under those talismans, what must he think of the man Wei Wuxian endured days of torment for?
Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning handle night hunts for the next year to earn money for the Wen survivors. During that year, Jiang Cheng brings Yanli in her wedding clothes; and he insists that Wen Ning leave. Wen Ning, carefully carrying a warm bowl of soup, gives them privacy.
Then Wei Wuxian, wielding Wen Ning like a sword, destroys Jiang Yanli's happiness and takes it out on his sword. Does Wen Ning blame himself, too? Does he think of that warm soup and the kind eyes of the woman who shared it with him as Wei Wuxian beats him over and over?
Is it any wonder Wen Ning walks, resentment quiescent, to what should have been the destruction of what was left of his soul?
Wen Ning remains, only to be tormented, his will subdued. Jiang Cheng remains, too, wandering the world for answers only Wei Wuxian or Wen Ning could give.
Their, what, fifth fucking meeting? Wen Ning disobeys his master; Jiang Cheng gets his answers.
And then they watch over each other's nephews.
Tumblr media
(The nephew it's implied Jiang Cheng knows damn well is Wen Yuan from the beginning.)
(The nephew Wen Ning ends the novel shielding from the same harm that orphaned him.)
How could I not be compelled by them?

happy birthday!! top 5 pete or vegaspete moments for the ask game?
ooh let's see. went with mostly vegaspete for this one
1. temple scene. I was already on board with vegaspete before this scene but this was the first one that I really went "oh ho ho ho ho" about. The way Vegas is messing with Pete so deliberately, Pete's discomfort, it's just tasty. Highly enjoyable scene particularly for how casual Vegas is about it. He's toying with Pete and they both know it.
2. highly erotic torture scene. I still kind of can't believe that this was a thing that happened on a TV show that I watched with my own eyes, but boy did it make me lose my mind the first time around (and also the second time around, and every time I think about it). It's the first time Pete really gets revealed for the fucked up little creature that he is as he stares his own destruction in the face and laughs, and Vegas's sheer determination to break him (and succeeding! at least partially), the meticulous cruelty on display...the reveal of Gun's abuse and Pete's reaction to it. It was such a WHOA WHAT THE FUCK moment in the best way possible.
2. poor Pete just can't leave crying Vegas sitting on the lawn with his dead hedgehog. I just. love that he has the opportunity to leave and escape from his torturer and Vegas is just too sad and pathetic in that moment for him to do it. The look on his face when he makes the decision to stay, too, his "oh COME ON okay fine" expression as though someone is making him do this (I don't have a screenshot at the moment but maybe I'll dig one up later), and then of course his just. reaching out to Vegas in a remarkable gesture of kindness.
3. Pete's breakdown and leaving the safehouse (bonus mention to his homecoming scene). On the flipside: Pete falling apart when Vegas flips around on him again - chains him back up after they have sex and returns to treating him like an object, something to vent his anger on, and it's also something that I think has been a long time in coming in some ways that's not just from the direct cause of how Vegas has hurt him. I think it's also a result of the way in which Vegas has cracked Pete open and broken some of his coping mechanisms that have let him live with his own dehumanization. And suddenly he is facing those things, and facing his own wants (which it seems now he can't even have), and he can't stand it. And then the scene of him just...stumbling back to the main family, broken down and barely keeping it together. and crying into his noodles. It makes me hurt for Pete in the best way that also has me going "oh no that's terrible" with an utter lack of sincerity. It's a complicated emotion.
4. poolside scene. god. me: sobbing on the couch watching this for the first time. so many feelings. so many. I've got nothing much that I can say here except that I'm still very fucked up about it in a very special way. I'd probably be even more fucked up if Vegas had actually died but
5. post-credits hospital scene. healed my crops and watered my heart. Such a relief, such a catharsis, such beautiful tenderness and there's so much still to unpack but. boy. I don't expect such gifts from shows and Kinnporsche gave me this one.
I feel like I'm remiss not mentioning the sex scene and it's a very narrow miss but I think I'll stand by my choices.
