Oh how smug you felt, that a song you had written that was purely dedicated to your boys, could still be released and put onto your latest album, Sonder. Truth be told, it was masked as a song to all your 'girls' out there, about spending time with them being your most favourite thing in the world, and not needing anything else. That was how it actually made it onto the album. But you knew who you really wrote it for.

You wrote the song for Chan, who dedicated his life to protecting each of his partners and prioritising them over himself.

For Minho, who willingly let you read him like a book and get to know him because he wasn't scared of opening up to you.

For Changbin, who often indulged in late night deep conversations with you, whether they were trivial matters that you spiraled deeply into, or more serious ones that helped each of you lift the weight off of your shoulders.

For Hyunjin, whose dramatic antics yet romantic attitude always made you swoon, no matter how goofy he would suddenly become.

You wrote it for Jisung, who always managed to keep you on your toes, whether it be from him bursting into song, his sleep clinginess or his rambles about his new favourite anime that inspired him to write a song or two.

For Felix, who was your constant source of happiness, smiles radiating sunshine and reflecting his light across your shadows, forever brightening your day.

For Seungmin, your cheeky yet very emotionally intelligent partner in crime who helped you stay rational in times when all you could see was doom and gloom.

And finally for Jeongin, who always insisted his admiration for you, was levels above your own for him, because he couldn't believe that it was possible for anyone to be more adored in this world than you.

They were all you needed. And you couldn't wait to show them that, and finally be able to express that to them through the other thing you all loved - music.

Gorgeous yet eery piano notes echoed across the walls of the stadium as you made your entrance, like you were a mystical being that your fans laid their eyes upon.

"She's so hot," Jeongin sighed as he leant across the railings.

"Real," Hyunjin nodded, tongue grazing his upper lip.

"Stop perving on our girlfriend," Seungmin sighed and whacked them on the backs of their heads.

Your boyfriends were sat on an upper tier of the seating in the stadium, safely away from fans and any possible suspicions to why they were there. Luckily, if that case was ever made, fans would be sure to defend you, knowing that you and Jeongin were friends at SOPA.

If only they knew that the two of you were way more than friends. As well as his seven other band members.

Suddenly a new track they hadn't heard started playing, some calming guitar sounding out before a drum track starting kicking in and their girlfriend's poppy voice blended perfectly with the music.

"Come and take a ride with me, I got a credit card and some good company..."

"Wait, that's about us, right?" Chan's eyes widened and a big grin appeared on his face.

"She literally said her girlies," Minho said bluntly, making Chan laugh.

"We're sort of the girlies," Han shrugged.

"Yeah Jisung you do give baby girl energy to be fair," Felix laughed.

"So does Binnie," Jisung added on, smiling as their girl performed.

The fun, light-hearted choreography made you shine with your bright energy.

"I feel so proud, wahhh," Changbin held his hand over his heart, bopping along to the music much like his other boyfriends.

"Quick, let's head backstage!" Felix pushed his other boyfriends forwards down the stairs in pure excitement as the concert came to an end.

Stretched out on the sofa in your dressing room, sipping from some water, you nearly choked on your mouthful as the door burst open with eight men pouring through.

"You were so good!"

"That song was about us right?!"

"Right?!"

You giggled as you were quite literally smothered in their love, kisses being peppered across your face, your neck, your hands, swallowed up in the arms of your boyfriends.

"Yah! What if I was getting changed?" you gasped playfully as you pushed them all away.

"I wouldn't be complaining," Hyunjin smirked before getting a neck slap from Minho.

"Hey!"

And on they went playfully fighting as Chan gave you one of his hoodies he brought with him, just for you.

"Thanks love," you smiled fondly, pulling the fluffy black hoodie over your head as Jeongin tugged you into his arms.

"You really wrote a song about us?" Felix grabbed your hands to gain your attention.

"How could you tell?" you pushed your lips together, trying not to let any words spill out straight away. You'd keep them guessing just that bit longer, that was your game.

"Credit card and some good company? You literally said that to us one time," Seungmin shrugged knowingly, with shake of his head to get the hair out of his face. He had been growing it longer recently - no objections from you.

"That could just be about my friends," you feigned ignorance.

"Nah!"

"No way!"

"Hey I have friends!" you stood up, folding your arms and detesting their claims.

"We know you do, we know love," Changbin back hugged you tightly.

"But you also have us, hmm?" Minho smirked, tickling under your chin like you were one of his cats.

"And we're way better company!" Han declared, from his spot sat on top of Jeongin as he teased the younger and cooed like you all normally did with the maknae.

"I think Jeongin would disagree," you said dryly.

"I would!" the fox boy choked out, nearly sounding suffocated with distraught as he wrestled the older boy off of him.

"But you wouldn't, would you? Don't deny it, that song was for us," Seungmin pointed out.

"Mmm, sure, whatever you want to believe," you looked down at your feet shyly, knowing there was no turning back from here. They had caught you out. But you didn't mind anymore, you were happy because they were too.

OH this is the best question i have ever received! Thank you! I hope this can be a helpful resource for you or anyone else interested in getting into shojo!!!

I’m gonna define “Good Beginner Shojo” as stories with an interesting premise, strong narrative(? this is VERY subjective sorry?), and also lacks some of the more squicky/uncomfortable tropes: predatory romantic relationships, borderline sexual assault as flirting, or incest**. This list is split between short and long series. I’ll also try to keep the genres diverse! These are all stories I’ve personally read/watched and are popular enough that they’ve been officially translated in different languages.

Good Shojo for Beginners, Short Term Investment

Princess Tutu: A dark fairy-tale-esque anime about a young girl who studies ballet in the day and fights demons at night using ballet + emotional intelligence. The deeper plot is that the entire cast are treated like puppets by a grand and elusive storymaster, and they all must struggle to escape being doomed by the narrative. There’s a lot of references to Swan Lake, the girl keeps getting turned into a duck, many emotions are felt. Complete, one anime season.

From Me to You: shy young girl is a social outcast due to misunderstandings that blew out of proportion. She receives an olive branch from a boy in her class and this gives her the confidence to start making friends and support herself!! The aforementioned boy is also her love interest and is endearingly too flustered to make a move. high school drama ensues. Two anime seasons, manga complete ~120 chapters.

Magic Knight Rayearth: three girls get transported to a fantasy world and have to learn to work together in giant magic mecha suits order to rescue a trapped princess + save the world. They make friends along the way as they try to fight monsters. One anime season, manga complete ~30 chapters.

Kase-san: sapphic high school romance with a jock girl and gardener girl who plants flowers near her practice field… they are both kinda shy and build up confidence as their bond gets deeper. it’s just 100% fluff. anime OVA and complete manga, ~15 chapters, there's also a sequel-series though

Library Wars: what it says on the tin. militant librarians fight the government to stop book censorship. the story follows a soldier in training: a reckless young woman who dreams of meeting the "prince" who inspired her to take up arms to protect books. this is more of an action-comedy than a political drama, so don't expect too much from the plot, but it's fun to watch our failgirl get put into situations. one anime season, 73 chapter manga, live action movie. you'll be okay just watching the anime but obvi the manga expands more on the characters + world building.

Orange: high school girl receives letters from her future self that tell her that a boy from her friend group is planning on committing suicide. She works with her friends to prevent this from happening, but things are definitely more complicated than they seem. An emotional drama, discussion of mental health including depression and suicidal thoughts. It’s a really heartfelt series. One anime season, ~38 chapter manga. (originally published in a shoujo magazine, then switched to seinen probably for marketing reasons.*)

In the Clear Moonlit Dusk: Masculine studious girl feels distant from her classmates who idolize her as a “prince,” but then she catches the attention of the local sparkly bad boy “prince.” An innocent, fluffy high school romance about a prince and her prince. SO many sparkly anime eyes, if that's you're thing. It’s a simple plot, but I enjoy the execution a lot. Ongoing, currently ~27 chapters

Tokyo Mew Mew: Captain Planet but magical girl. group of teen girls get accidentally infused with the DNA of endangered animal species + magic and transform into a hero squad to fight aliens trying to destroy earth's resources! Their cover for their secret headquarters is a maid café, where they all work part time. Manga complete ~30 chapters, anime adaption complete + one season of anime reboot.

Good Shojo for Beginners, Long Term Investment

Yona of the Dawn: historic fantasy setting, coming of age for a naive young princess who grows into a capable leader by abandoning her sheltered life within palace walls for…plot reasons (major spoiler in 1st chapter LOL). there’s a slow but thorough exploration of the political issues in her kingdom, i would say the world-building is an unexpected strength of the story. She’s supported by her hot magical anime boy harem, but the story emphasizes found family dynamics over the romcom. there’s still a primary love interest established early on, it’s just VERY slow burn. one anime season, manga ongoing 300+ chapters

Kageki Shojo!!: Follow the adventures of an all-girls vocational school to train to become members of the historic Kouka all-girls musical theater troupe, where women play roles for all genders. The protagonist is a girl who grew up watching Kouka performances and never lost her sense of childlike wonder. Theater doesn’t come naturally for her, but she’s also very talented. Fun cast, lightly discusses social issues as they come up with sincerity and care. Very reminiscent of 80s shojo. One anime season, Ongoing manga 90+ chapters

My Love Mix-Up! what if there was an ACTUAL high school love triangle. boy likes girl who likes a different boy, but that boy is interested in the aforementioned boy. what if this was all a misunderstanding and actually boy and girl like the same boy. what if that was also a misunderstanding. have you ever been a dumbass high school student trying your best. protagonist is bi king. 120~ chapters, no anime, but a live action show.

Ouran High School Host Club: ah yes a classic romcom. girl gets a scholarship to an elite high school and accidentally falls into debt on her first day to the school host club (boys who professionally flirt with girls during lunch). To pay off her debt, she pretends to be a guy at school so she can work as a host. The comedy is a blend of making fun of shojo tropes and the disaster personalities that make up the supporting cast. it's funnier the more shojo you have read/watched before this one. one anime season, 200+ chapters, complete

BL Metamorphosis: elderly widow accidentally reads a BL manga and gets invested, she bonds with a high school girl who works at the bookstore about it. Very cute parallels between her late husband and the fictional love story. Depicts fandom culture without normalizing the creepy and invasive BL fan behavior. Reminds me a lot of spending time with my grandma, which makes me want to cry.~90 chapters.

Sailor Moon: I know i know everyone is going to tell you this but it's actually a classic for a reason. (Sapphic!!!) magical girls traveling across space and time? Fighting evil with the power of friendship and love? Cute character designs? It's a good time. Protagonist is a total brat (normal 14yr old!!!!) AND a good hero. I'm putting this last because I wanted the other stories to have a chance, but it's honestly so good like please. There technically an inappropriate age gap relationship but it's like the disney movie Tangled where you don't realize it until you literally look up their ages. 150+ chapters, complete.

**When I first read shojo, I was a very young child, basically the target audience, but there are things I read as a child that would make me feel a bit disgusted to read now. Knowing this, I want people who are new to shojo to make informed decisions. There are problematic tropes present in MANY well loved stories--and they are well-loved for a reason!!! These complexities are part of reading and enjoying fiction. I've excluded some of my all-time favorite stories from my childhood thanks to the criteria I set as good "beginner" shojo--but I also don't want to contribute to a world that divides stories as "problematic" and "unproblematic" as if such a binary exists. Ultimately, this list is just based on my PERSONAL taste, what I deem more comfortable to read than other stories, so I can't guarantee that you'll have the same experience. I can't even promise I would have the same experience re-reading some of these, since the stuff that made me comfortable/uncomfortable in the past has changed in the present. It's all very subjective. That's why I'm intentionally specific about the tropes I've excluded. Note that this doesn't mean the stories listed are not littered with their own flaws. I hope this disclaimer didn't seem too excessive, haha.

Headcanons about Yandere Simulator!COD.

Simon "Ghost" Riley

Warning: mention of suicide, mention of alcohol, drugs, mental problems, possibly traumatic moments, etc. My personal vision of the character. OOC?

I think he's perfect for the role of Yandere.

His childhood was disgustingly shitty, and you can't blame him for that.

Born into a dysfunctional family, Simon was doomed to a hard life from childhood. His father was a drunk, a bloody alcoholic who prided himself on being able to drink for weeks and stay on his feet. A dirty man, with filthy and sadistic tendencies taken out on those closest to him. A freak who broke everyone he knew, trampling on his own son, turning the poor child into an unwilling broken doll.

Simon remembered those lonely nights in the old shed next to the house, cluttered with trash and rusty tools, like it was yesterday. The cold wind blew through the cracks between the boards, leaving goosebumps on Simon's skin and forcing him to pull his legs tighter together, curling up in a ball to keep warm. A night in the old barn was Mr. Riley's favorite punishment, a man crashing home after another rave binge to find out his son had gotten an F in school? Late for first period? Or maybe spent his pocket money on some silly comic book? - no matter what, Simon will fly instantly to the Locked Shed. No matter what happened, Simon was always drawn to his older brother, who, unfortunately, wasn't as good as his younger brother would have liked. Tommy was a jerk, that bad boy in high school who publicly cursed the teacher, broke the toilet faucet, and did stupid things. But the dumbest thing in Tommy's life was drugs - this jerk decided to prove once again to everyone that he was cool, not realizing that very soon this addiction would consume him, like everyone else who once got addicted. And Simon hovered between two fires, like a child dreaming of a normal family, like a son who had never seen his father smile and never heard praise. And the mother? Mrs. Riley-a dandelion of God, withering rapidly in her husband's dirty hands. She was a beautiful woman, the only person in that family who cared about Simon, and he loved her immensely, and still does. Mrs. Riley died when Simon was 14. It was a cold Sunday morning when a loud gunshot rang out, waking Simon from his sleep. Feeling an animal fear, he rushed to the sound, recognizing a sight that forever shattered his poor mind. On September 6, Mrs. Riley shot herself in the temple.Haunted by her husband's nightmares and torture, she couldn't take any more of this abusive behavior, couldn't watch her firstborn wither under drugs, couldn't see Simon hurt.But her act didn't make it better, hell, that kind of thing never makes anything better. After that day, Simon withdrew more than ever. Hitting his father was nothing, hunger was nothing, being forced to kiss a poisonous snake was a challenge.

Simon grew up, and with it grew his hatred and repressed aggression towards his father.One day in a club Simon watched his father attack a poor girl. She simply refused to spend the night with him and the drunkard, not confused, began to beat her as if he were a wrestler in the ring Simon could not do anything, just as he could not save his mother, stop his father's beatings or convince Tommy that drugs are evil. And he didn't understand why his father wasn't in jail. They'd find the girl, but when they did, no one would really care what happened. The freak always gets away with it.

After the death of his mother, Simon was forced to work part-time at the local machine shop. Old man Carson was happy to help the neighbor boy, so he took him into his shop as an assistant without any questions or demands. Yes, and Simon was a handy and understanding guy.

Simon started out washing cars, and after working like that for half a year, he was promoted to Carson's apprentice: the old man explained and taught the boy mechanics, letting him stay up late reading books about cars.

The old man was able to replace Simon's father, teaching the teenager simple things necessary for basic survival. For example, Simon, at 16, learned how to fix some appliances and how to use tools. But Mrs. Carson had already taught Simon cooking, laundry, and household chores, and he, as a bright boy, grasped everything on the fly. Simon noticed Mr. and Mrs. Carson had a son, which they never had, for unfortunately Paula Carson was barren.

Simon lived as a two-family household, mostly spending his days at his mentor's house, but when his father began to rage and throw himself at the neighbor's door, Simon would return, falling asleep again in his little room.

The work in the workshop brought quite a good income and Simon, having entered the desired college, was even able to rent a small apartment on the outskirts of the city, and finally moved out of his home, so as not to see this den, and not to put, in Simon's opinion, the family of his mentor in danger.

The old man Carson told him fatherly: "Simon, you'll be happy when you find love. Simon thought so, but he couldn't imagine what that love looked like. He couldn't believe it would happen someday, not just pass him by like it always did.

But one day that day has come. First day of college, Simon is walking toward the auditorium when a stranger suddenly sweeps him off his feet like a small tornado. It was just a moment when he looked into your eyes-- He felt like he was going to drown in them. The way your eyelashes fluttered as you stood there, rubbing your forehead after the blow and babbling something, was in his head. From that day on, he couldn't imagine his life if you weren't there for him.

"Finally, I'll be happy."

But is this how it's going to be? Simon can't contain his anger at seeing you talking sweetly to some cocky kid in the back of the class. And the voice in Simon's head whispered sweetly: "eliminate."

Sayaka:

It's a clever play on the story where, rather than the littlest becoming human for love and a soul, instead she becomes a mermaid after loosing both, even gaining the bittersweet ending of having a chance at heaven but she still needs to do good after death

i was surprised to learn that sayaka's story is based on the little mermaid, but it makes more sense the more i think about it. such a heartbreaking, tragic tale that i get emotional ocer every time.

A lot of Madoka Magica fans believe she is based off of the original Little Mermaid story cuz, just like the original Little Mermaid, Sayaka loved a boy and said boy did not reciprocate. SPOILERS, she makes a contract with Kyubey to become a magical girl and in return her wish was to help Kyosuke (the guy she likes) who was disabled. Later on when she becomes a witch cuz she felt she wasn't good enough for Kyosuke and doesn't tell him about her feelings, her witch form is a mermaid. I suck at explaining but I hope my propaganda helps 🙏

(Major spoilers for madoka magical)Okay so I will admit her allusion to the little mermaid ain't super obvious, but let me explain, she is based on the original story for the little mermaid, she makes a wish for the sake of a boy she loves basically sacrificing her soul, well he ends up in love with another girl, and as a result she ends up going on a downward spiral and transforms into a monster known as a witch, her witch form is a mermaid.

Even though she's not a mermaid outside her witch form, her story is made to be a direct parallel to the self-sacrificial nature of the little mermaid, even letting herself die. This isn't the end tho because in one of the happier endings of the little mermaid she still becomes sea foam/dies but she also has a chance at becoming a sea spirit and helps others, this is very similar to Sayaka's final fate in the anime where after Madoka rewrites the universe Sayaka still gets corrupted/dies but instead of becoming a witch, she becomes apart of the law of cycles and helps Madoka save other magical girls. There are way to many similarities to her story and the little mermaid for it to just be coincidence imo.

Poor girl is stuck in a craptastic world where horrible monsters kill you, the only way to fight back is to become a zombie child soldier killing what remains of your own kind for survival, the wish you made will inevitably blow up in your face because the person granting it is a jackass, and the writer is hellbent on shitting on the girl power ethos of the magical girl genre by making it so that girls suffer and die for trying to achieve reasonable desires like "not starving to death" and attaining agency in their lives dooms you even harder because of womanly emotions. She needs a win. Also, she is explicitly paralleled with The Little Mermaid--she is a tragic figure who makes a deal to help the boy she loves in exchange for putting her life on a ticking clock, only to be passed up in favor of another girl. As a result, she dies and becomes something else--in this case, Oktavia von Seckendorff, "the mermaid witch."

As a child i did not even realize this was a little merm adaptation, but it really reads. She is sooo strange and other worldly and the movie absolutely captures that dreamlike fairy tale vibe

Ponyo a roughly five-year-old magical goldfish who can transform into a frog-type thing and a human girl. She's the eldest daughter of the literal goddess of the sea and a former human sailor given immortality. She falls in love with the five-year-old boy who cares for her and is thrilled to explore his ordinary yet magical world. She's bouncy, exuberant, and joyful. She loves ham. She doesn't have to give up her voice.

So I was thinking about creating a loose list of recs for ORV fans or, in other words, "If you liked ORV, you also may like this." I decided to add things less obvious because I think people already read works like Trash of Count's Family, etc.

Princess Tutu

“The beginning of a story is a sudden event; the start, a happy accident, the end, the fate for which it's meant. A story that never ends is a sad fate.”

Let's start with Princess Tutu (PT), anime, not manga because they're different. I watched it about a week before ORV and after finishing both, I can't help but notice their similarities. However, meanwhile, ORV is about the relationship between the reader, the author, and the protagonist, and PT is more about the relationship between the author and their creation: the story and its characters. Don't let the name fool you, don't be like me. It's much darker than I expected from this style and genre. Be ready for angst.

Plot: Ahiru is a small duck in a pond. One day she notices a dancing boy with a very sad gaze. Boy every day goes to dance near the pond and the little duck is completely mesmerized by him. She can't help but notice sadness and loneliness in his dance. She wants to make this boy smile and at that moment a writer Droselmeir appears. He tells her that she could do this by collecting shards of his broken heart but under some conditions. He gives her a magic pendant that can transform her, first into an ordinary human girl, then into the graceful ballerina Princess Tutu, a fictional character from the tale that was doomed for tragedy in the original story.

Later we find out that this city is kinda enchanted by Droselmeir's tale (reverse isekai before it became mainstream) and some characters broke out of the tale like the boy by the lake - Mytho or Raven - the villain of this tale. Tale elements blend interestingly in the city and its residents.

Also, I have no idea wtf is happening with the main characters' dynamic in this complicated rectangle, but there is no straight explanation for this.

I can't help but see some parallels between Mytho - KDJ, Fakir - both YJH & HSY, Ru - HSY, and Droselmeir - Dokkaebi. I love how the story describes characters doomed by narrative and the struggles of being a writer. Also, all of these subtle references to fairytales at the beginning of the episode? Love it. I bet there are more references for the ballet part, but I probably didn't get it. I gently encourage you to check it out. (Definitely not gently, I'm as desperate as Kim Dokja trying to advertise TWSA to other people)

Miss not Sidekick

It's a much simpler read, just to chill and have fun while laughing at Mc shenanigans. Plot: Typical isekai story, where Mc is a fan of the internet novel of the reverse harem genre. When isekaied decided to invent popcorn and enjoy full time 4d immersion in the story.

There are not so many similarities in themes like with Princess Tutu, but more the role of MC – Latte as reader. I liked how she continued to behave like a spectator of a story inside Isekai world, treating it like she's inside a special 4D theater, not existing in this world as a part of it, until she couldn't.

Until her 4th wall is shattered (*badabums* it's a bad pun, she doesn't have it like kdj) and she realizes she could actually die, (quite shocking I know). Also, MC invents BL for this world and converts other people into it. Overall, the art style is different from other isekai romfant and it's something you need time to get used to, but after a while, you understand it suits perfectly for the narrative and silly tone of the comic.

Inso's Law or My Life as an Internet Novel

I feel like it's more reverse isekai similar to orv, where the story becomes part of your life. But if in KDJ's case, this transition is obvious and life-crashing, then in MC's situation is really creepy. It blends seamlessly into her regular life making her feel insane because everything remains the same except having a whole new friend who behaves like your bestie and a different school, where everything starts to feel like a romantic novel full of clichés. MC like KDJ is also unreliable in her perception of others here and thinks her knowledge of clichés like a reader-outsider makes her more omnipotent than she really is. Too bad they used 3 person POV, so it's really obvious, but funny nevertheless. (One of the cases where she thinks one of her classmates is a girl pretending to be a boy cause of some kind of cliché family drama, when in fact it's just a boy and I find it funny how this classmate looks like Jang Hayoung twin and have similar fate, poor souls) guess she also has similarities in her character to pre-scenario or regular life KDJ. They both seem to have this introverted avoidance type of personality. I'm curious about supernatural events happening in manhwa and I hope we'll get some explanation for it.

Study Sessions

You stared at your father as he called a family meeting, usually, these go horribly wrong. Especially as of recently, when your father decided that you, the youngest and the only girl (other than your older sister, April) should go to school…and not the school Donnie and (as of recent) Draxum have been teaching. No, human school. A human high school. You sat down at the table and hugged your knees to your chest, Donnie leaning on the wall, Raph and Leo sitting in the chairs and Mikey sitting on the counter. Splinter smiled but before he could speak Red spoke “ Pops- if this is about school I’m sure Donnie could teach her about algebra and..whatever else human kids learn! “ Donnie snarked “ I could teach her rocket science! “ Splinter nodded “ I’m sure you could purple but, she needs to be with other humans, learn to socialize “ you looked away as he slid papers on the table “ April’s parents did me a favor and enrolled her with Casey Jr! “ you felt doom and anxieties cloud your chest, you took the papers and read it, the papers were illegal documents that Donnie made…you read through each line before getting your schedule. How fun. It was seven classes a day with each class being an essential skill…apparently. What I’m the actual fuck is Home Ec.

The next few weeks came quicker than anticipated. Donnie made you and Casey matching bracelets, they were emergency bracelets (ignoring that your ninpō could just…tell them if something was wrong). And of course they were genius tech! He was making an empire after all! You did clothes shopping with April and also learned how to be socially acceptable with not only April's help, but also Sunita…and finally, the dreaded day. You and Casey stood shoulder to shoulder and stared at the high school, it was bustling, a few interesting faces but mostly everyone already knew each other. There was a larger group, of about seven people. You noted how one had a pretty sapphire necklace and a prosthetic arm that was so fluid it rivaled Donnie’s own he made for Leo. You gave Casey a hopeful smile and walked into the high school, you were immediately overstimulated. Going from a rather empty sewer to a high school was anxiety filling. A blonde haired girl bumped into you, when you turned to apologize for being in her way she immediately apologized. She was probably 5 '6 with sea green eyes and blonde hair “ my names Nyssa, you two seem a bit lost- do you need some help? “ Casey immediately nodded, Nyssa smiled and held out her hand “ oh right! They/Them! "Oops. You smiled and spoke your name, Casey following your lead. Nyssa led you two to your first class “ Your schedules are exactly the same, I didn’t know they could do that. You may get separated when testing comes up, you could be boosted into honors or lowered to just skills class “ Nyssa stopped at the first door. How amazing, math at 8 AM.

When the class finished you saw the white haired boy meet up with a brown haired girl with a tiger eye brooch. All the jewelry you’ve been seeing was very similar to Sunitas cloaking device, the brown haired girl seemed to be a senior based on how old she looked and sounded. You smiled and led Casey to your other classroom. Science.. how lovely, you knew you’d get this fine. Casey had a bit less of knowledge than you, they didn’t exactly have a need for schooling in the apocalypse. While you…well your brain has been nurtured by your older brother since the both of your youth. You could speak four different languages fluently, you could do some math that college students learn, you could do most things. Your biggest problem? American history. You learned Japanese history, your father telling you myths and legends that he learned. And you knew a bit of history from China. A sudden electrical feeling ran through you and Casey, it was simply a blue warmth, less like a fire or a sun and more like an electric heat. You were more than happy to welcome it into your ninpō, walking with it through your science class. It was simple biology, you slept through most of it with Casey and answered any questions sent your way. It left soon after second period and left you alone during third.

Then it was time for your language class…you spoke flawlessly, holding a full conversation with the teacher in Spanish before halfway switching to Japanese to see if the teacher could too. He couldn’t. Casey suddenly spoke up next to you and you turned, the two of you happily chattering in Japanese, sometimes clicking at each other before you realized that was weird, so you continued in Japanese. Yes, both you and Casey are fluent in the “ turtle language “ but shhh that doesn’t matter. Language class moved quickly and then off to fourth. You met Nyssa again, they said hello as you sat down next to Casey in biology. It was announced that you’ll be dissecting something. When you questioned what the teacher smiled “ oh! we’ll be dissecting something super exciting tomorrow, a red eared slider! “ you felt queasy. Quickly shooting up your hand to ask for the restroom, you sped off and found yourself emptying your stomach in the school hallway, a trash can in your hold, your ninpō going crazy and altering not only all of your brothers of your panicking but also a feeling…someone who was spewing mystic energy somewhere in this school, and no, it wasn’t Draxum. His mystic powers felt a certain…way. It wasn’t long before Casey found you and rubbed your back. The feeling of Raphs sturdy ninpō wrapping around your panicking one helped calm you down. You breathed and wiped your mouth with a sanitary wipe Donnie was demanding you keep with you. Slowly you and Casey went back to class, you still looked clammy and jumpy as you sat down and looked anywhere but the board that was a display of snapping turtles insides, Casey was holding it together, but barely. Like an overstuffed suitcase. The bell soon rang after that.

You made your way to lunch where you spoke to Draxum a bit and then was swept away by Nyssa. Brought to a table with the same few interesting people you’ve seen that day. When you really got closer to them, most of the jewelry was spewing mystic energy…cloaking devices. The brown haired senior was named Bellezza, there was a tan girl with short curly hair and a seal coat named Öskra, a blonde senior with blue eyes named River, she had a opal gemstone in a choker on her neck. A brown haired girl named Ésme who shared a ruby ring with the white haired boy (whom you learned was named Mason) and was the only one who didn’t buzz with mystic energy. And the last person, a black haired boy with burgundy eyes named Alexander, he had a garnet bracelet on. They all seemed to be able to pick up on your free flowing ninpō, and how it was prickling from previous panic. You were stuck close to Casey as you rested through lunch, your ninpō reaching and searching for two in particular. One that kind of felt like Mc Donald’s sprite and the electrical warmth. They both responded immediately, their ninpōs like two cats curling around a scared kitten. Your ninpō is the metaphorical kitten.

You didn’t eat lunch that day, moving into fifth period, ELA. The teacher gave you a free period and you simply slept. Your lashes attached to your cheek before you woke up with a startled noise, your eyes wide before looking up. There was your purple clad brother, staring at you as you looked at the ceiling tiles. You glared at him, before looking around and getting yourself into the roof quickly “ what are you doing here?! “ you hissed “ I’m just seeing how my dear sister is doing! and if this school is really better than my teachings! '' you sighed “ it’s super easy right now- “ Donnie laughed “ of course it is! He said confidently “ you smiled at your brother and sighed “ How’s everyone holding up at home? '' Donnie hummed “ Nardo has been fighting Raph to not just portal in this school and hunt you down. I didn’t let him come! “ you stared at him dead panned “ and you can? '' Donnie stared and then slowly backed away into the shadows of the dusty air vent. You dropped down quietly after that and slipped back into your seat, knocking dust off yourself. The bell rang again…god you were tired of that damn bell. Time for sixth period.

Next was a world history class. The teacher had turtles as a class pet, you were immediately drawn to them. Casey watched as you quietly chirped and rumbled at them. The turtles craning their heads closer to you as you made noises at them, their quiet voices responding. You quickly scampered to your seat, far away from Casey. Squished between two boys that made your ninpō scream and demand you return to Casey’s side, anxieties pulling your brain into mush. The teacher put on a video about ancient Egyptian mythology. Stuff you already knew. Your eyes grew heavy as you fell asleep, halfway through your rest the sound of a large bang startled you awake.

You whipped back with a noise and fell out of your chair. Backing up a bit, you didn’t see a classroom. You saw the tunnels, kraang infested as they chased you and your brothers. Raph missing. That was your whole mission, to retrieve your oldest brother. Leo and Casey Jr got separated. Mikey and Donnie hid in the tank. Leaving you, to get stolen away. You fumbled and looked around for something, anything to fight the kraang. Someone grabbed your arm and you started hitting it, the arm didn’t relent, it was softly pulling you away from the tunnel. The whole…incident… was traumatic for you. any really, everyone. You, Casey, Raph, and Leo got the nastiest of the flashbacks. The yokai therapist that the family got said they were classified as panic attacks. Even as the soft arms pushed you to the floor you continued hitting and thrashing, pausing when the feeling of something wrapping around your ninpō entered your brain. Your body is basically shocked to real life. Casey was holding you by your arms, you had hot tears running down your face and hurt vocal cords. You stared at him and blinked before letting out a quiet sob and leaning forward, him just holding you throughout the entirety of sixth period.

You guys didn’t go to seventh period. You just sat in the corner of a hallway and breathed, at some point the same blonde senior, River, came and sat down with you two. And after that? Mason, the albino boy, and Bellezza the senior with auburn hair joined her. They were all siblings, Casey theorized that they were wolf yokai based on how they flocked like a pack. Seventh period ended quickly, when April came to get you guys she immediately noticed the tense mood from you two, walking back to the sewers…she could only wonder how the brothers would react. When the three of you walked in, Raph was the first to notice you being back, he looked at your and Casey’s sour faces and lowered his snout so it rested on your head and hugged you, chuffing hard enough your entire body vibrated. You made small similar noises, but they were weak and halfhearted. Raph was so worried about what happened to you at school. Leo and Donnie soon returned to the main area and joined the upwards cuddle session, Casey and April being pulled into it as they all wrapped around Raph to feel his churrs, Mikey soon attaching to Raphs shells and starting to chur as well, you forgot how amazing it felt to be held like this. You took off your cloaking device and the scars that were hidden from the public eye became known. Oh how much they wanted to ask about school, why your ninpō wailed in pain, why your chirps that normally sounded so nice were half hearted and deflated

Summary: you are sent to Storm's end with your twin Aemond, preventing catastrophic consequences of your brother's rage.

Warnings: mentioned violence, canon-level incest, spoilers of HotD season 1 finale, me liking Aegon, English is not my first language, hopefully, the high valyrian is right.

"I am going to Storm's End" my brother's voice booms through the chamber. "For Lord Baratheon's support, I know. what of it?" I retort, grieving my interrupted conversation with Aegon. "Come along then! Mother didn't inform you?" By the confusion on his face he declines any jesting from his side. "Inform me of?" I raise an eyebrow as I turn to look at the Queen Regent. "I think it would be best if you went with your brother" she answers my question almost immediately. She says an entirely different sentence with her eyes though. 'go with him and make sure he doesn't fuck up' is what the look says. I have given her body language too much thought over the years not to notice it. "Very well then. Your dragon then?" I say to Aemond, despite my gaze lingering on my mother still. I don't wait for and answer as I get up from my chair. "Take care, please" pleads Aegon, still holding my hand. "I will love" I say back, kissing the crown of his head in silent promise.

Aemond is already out of the door and I follow his long strides for what feels like hours, until we reach his dragon-mount Vhagar. He gets on her back first and helps me up as well. We take flight and in no time we land in Storm's end. As we enter the throne room, I don't bother to engage in the talk that happens between my twin and the storm lord. Until the words "We have come with an offer" reached my ears. That was my cue to say my part. "What could you offer me, my prince" said lord Baratheon with a doubting look. "We're here to propose a betrothal" i answer before Aemond bothers to open his mouth. The lord looks me up and down and with a slightly clueless tone he says"Pardon me, your Grace, yet the last time I checked, you were already wed" I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes, not sure if because of the new title as Queen Consort, or his stupidity. "Not me, him!" I gesture to the man standing next to me. "We propose that one of your daughters marries prince Aemond" i clarify. The frown of the lord face dissapears as if he cracked a difficult riddle."Men" I sigh as Aemond struts towards the Baratheon girl. 'if she likes him and he stops being insecure, we're fine'.

My train of thoughts is interrupted as my nephew Lucerys, the son of Rheanyra, the self proclaimed Queen, enters. 'we're not fine, we're fucked' my inner monologue spirals as the boy hands off the message by his mother. Being clearly met with denial, the 'Velaryon' plans on taking his leave, however, my twin seems to finally snap.

"Wait, my lord Strong" he calls out. And that is where it goes down. I approach him like a wounded animal, while he declares how he wishes to make the child's eye a gift to our mother. "Give me your eye bastard!" He yells as he launches forward at Luke's denial, yet I am quick to catch up to him. I grab him by the shoulders and look deep into his eyes, his now uncovered sapphire reflecting the occasional lightning above us.

"Aemond stop this madness!" I raise my voice. "He took my eye!" he bites back just as powerfully. We are two dragons, fighting eachother other, fire in our gazes. "Is his eye worth a war? The destruction of house Targaryen? The death of everyone around you and yourself?!" I spit. The rage in his expression fades. "If you do this right now brother, you will be the doom of us all" my voice ceases in volume and the tone is new, soft. I grab the both sides of his face hurriedly, yet gently in a way."It is you, the younger brother who studies history and Philosophy" I begin, the look on my face affectionate as I quote his words from couple of days prior."it is you who rides the biggest dragon in the world. You are bigger than this Aemond, don't let yourself become a kinslayer." He is an educated man, he knows how bad the title is. "Ÿdra daor gaomagon visa ñuha idaña" don't do this my twin. Lucerys is but a shadow in the maze of clouds by the time we finish arguing. He is alive, however unbeknownst to us, The Rogue prince will take the threat to Luke's life to heart.

Summary:

Most people would prefer being the protagonist of a world full of adventure, be it in a game or in another world. But, unfortunately, a certain girl is not so lucky. Regaining the memories of her past life, she realizes that she was reborn in the world of Fortune Lover—one of the games she used to play.

Unfortunately, the character she was reincarnated into—Catarina Claes—is the game's main antagonist, who faces utter doom in every ending. Using her extensive knowledge of the game, she takes it upon herself to escape from the chains of this accursed destiny.

However, this will not be an easy feat, especially since she needs to be cautious as to not set off death flags that may speed up the impending doom she is trying to avoid. Even so, to make a change that will affect the lives of everyone around her, she strives—not as the heroine—but as the villainess.

Propaganda:

This show is so much fun. The protagonist is a lovable girl himbo, who is completely oblivious to everyone around falling in love with her. It’s a bit of a harem anime, but with equal opportunities: the girls are just as enamored with the main character as the guys are. The increasingly dumber ways in which she thinks she’s going to meet her doom (she is supposed to be the villain of the story, after all) are a delight to behold.

Trigger Warnings: Incest, Rape/Non-Con. The main character gets assaulted like two or three times, but it’s not graphic. One of these instances, where a kiss is forced on her, is by her adoptive brother, who is also her cousin, who is one of her main love interests.

Summary:

While in search of his precious friend, a young boy named Nai falls captive to a beautiful woman, whose looks are matched only by her taste for human flesh. Meanwhile Gareki, a clever thief, is in the midst of robbing her luxurious home. After causing a distraction, Gareki agrees to help Nai escape, but they are discovered upon the woman's return. As she transforms into a ghoulish monster, the boys flee.

On the run, Nai and Gareki are found by “Circus,” a government defense agency that deals with criminal activity too difficult for the police to handle and protects civilians from “varuga”—terrible monsters that devour humans for sustenance. In the hope that it will lead Nai to his missing friend, he and Gareki decide to join Circus. On their perilous journey, they face dangerous varuga and begin to uncover the secrets behind a shadowy organization known as Kafka.

Propaganda:

Karneval has two of the best protagonists I’ve ever seen. Gareki is superior to every other teenage boy protagonist in anime. His character arc, even in this one season that covers just a fraction of the manga, is so well-developed. I like that his arc is an emotionally driven coming-of-age and not a power fantasy.

Along with the main characters, Karneval has fantastic characters across the board. There is not a single supporting character I don't love (even the ones who annoy me). None of the female characters are reduced to love interests and are all unique and interesting, which can be hard to find sometimes in anime.

It is made by a female writer, which is always great to see, and for people who aren't really interested in romance, the anime is extremely friendship and found family driven. The found family aspect is really at the forefront of the series as Circus is not a glorified group and they don't get to have families which makes the bond between members so important.

The tone balance is amazing. In one episode, you can go on an emotional journey from laughing to crying in seconds. The plot is engaging with wild reveals and compelling mysteries to follow. The fantastical world is unique with the contrast of the dark monsters in a bright and colorful world. If you watch it in Japanese, the voice cast is so good and the soundtrack is also really good.

TL;DR it’s an interesting story with amazing characters to whom you will get attached.

The last three Donkeyskin tales in Cinderella Tales from Around the World come from South and Central America: Brazil (@ariel-seagull-wings), Chile, and Nicaragua.

*The Brazilian version featured in this book is Dona Labismina. A queen prays for a child, "even if it is a snake," and as a result, her daughter is born with a snake around her neck. But the princess, named Maria, and the snake, named Labismina, grow up together, and Maria loves Labismina and sees her as her sister. Eventually, however, Labismina leaves the land for the sea, but she promises to come back and help Maria whenever she calls for her. Some time later, the queen dies, and the king decides to marry Maria because only she fits her mother's ring. At Labismina's advice, Maria asks for gowns that like a field full of flowers, the sea full of fishes, and heaven with all its stars, then sails away on a boat that Labismina provides. Labismina tells her that someday she'll marry the prince of the kingdom she sails to: on her wedding day, if she calls for Labismina three times, then Labismina will be freed from her snake form and be a princess too. Maria becomes a poultry-girl at the prince's palace, then attends a three-day festival in her gowns, and when the prince falls ill with love for her, she slips a jewel that he gave her into a bowl of broth that she sends to him. Thus her identity is revealed and she marries the prince. But sadly, she forgets to call for Labismina, who is doomed to remain a snake in the sea, and this is why the sea storms and rages to this day. This unexpectedly bitter ending parallels some oral versions of Puss in Boots, where the young hero forgets to be grateful to his animal helper after he becomes a prince.

*The Chilean version, Florinda, stands out for one main reason: it's a lesbian version, or possibly a transgender version, much like the Romanian tale of The Princess Who Would Be a Prince! When Florinda's father (a commoner, not a king) wants to marry her, she runs away disguised as a boy. Soon she meets the king, who so admires the "young man's" beauty that he decides to give "him" his daughter's hand in marriage. On the wedding night, Florinda secretly admits her true gender to the princess, who is delighted to be married to a woman! But when the king sends the news of the princess's marriage to her godfather, another king, the latter consults a fortune teller, who reveals that the new "prince" is really female. The other king sails to their kingdom and makes a bet with the princess's father that he can reveal the "prince's" true gender. But Florinda upholds the masquerade, until the visiting king insists that they all bathe nude together in the river. But thanks to a mystical crucifix, which earlier helped Florinda to escape from her father, Florinda is bodily transformed into a man. Thus the visiting king loses the bet, and Florinda and the princess live happily ever after.

*The last story in the book's Donkeyskin section is the tragic ballad of Delgadina, which exists in many forms throughout all Spanish-speaking countries, though the version here is from Nicaragua. It's not strictly a Donkeyskin tale, or a fairy tale at all, but is about a princess with an incestuous father. In the version that this book features, Delgadina's mother is still alive and her father just wants to sleep with her, though apparently in some other versions her mother is dead and he wants to marry her. Either way, when she refuses he has her locked in a tower with no food or water. She pleads for something to drink, until finally her father relents and sends servants to bring her wine. But when they arrive they find her dead, and two doves and two butterflies fly from her body.

Jan-Feb 2024 Manhwa round-up

it is MARCH so it's two whole months of manhwa that I wanna talk about I'M SO SORRY so here are the top 5 new (to me) manhwa that I read the past two months!

5. Estio

The story of a boy with the ability to communicate with animals, a power that grows and evolves into something fearsome as he grows up. It's the story of Estio's search for a meaning to his life and his powers, and to understand humanity's place in the world. (This series had me crying over a cactus at 1am, so it's earned it's place on top 5!)

4. The Way to Protect the Female Lead's Older Brother

The villainess of all time. Roxanna is the reason for 'she can step on me and I will thank her' phrases. Transmigration story, except this time the lead realises that the only way to prevent the bad end is to be a greater villainess than the original character. With an entire villain family to deal with, Roxanna will manipulate, seduce, and kill her way to take them all down and save the character whose death starts the tragic novel she's now living. (Probably discontinued, but good enough to still recommend with the chapters that are out.)

3. Death is the Only Ending for the Villainess

A 'transmigrated as the villainess' story where the original villainess was merely a victim, and every choice leads to death. Thanks to the system, Penelope knows her only chance of survival is to seduce one of the romance targets before the female lead arrives-- except they're all red flags a hair's breath away from murdering her if she so much as says the wrong thing. Her manipulations and scheming in order to survive, however, is leading her to become a greater villainess than the original ever was, and that might actually be the key to her survival... if she doesn't get murdered by her romance targets first.

2. The Greatest Estate Developer

A transmigration story where... the mc's past life is relevant?? Lloyd Frontera was meant to be a scummy noble who dies at the beginning of the story as a way for the protagonist Javier Asrahan to leave the family he was serving, but when a modern day civil engineer takes over Lloyd's life, the fantasy world he's now living in is about to get an upgrade! (An absolutely hilarious story with what might be my favourite mc and protag relationship. The ridiculous artwork is a bonus and I look forward to how much more deranged Lloyd can look with each chapter!)

The S-Classes That I Raised

I started reading this 10am Jan 1st, and I know this because I have liveblogging receipts. I literally wrote 'this one is going to break my heart' and 'BRING IT ON' and then proceeded with 79 reaction comments the first day. When I finished the manhwa, I went straight to the novels and spent the NEXT MONTH AND A HALF reading all 850+ chapters. This series has catapulted it's way to my #1 manhwa in my heart, and I posted a whole powerpoint on why. It's a story about F-ranked hunter Han Yoojin and his S-ranked little brother, Han Yoohyun. It's a story about brothers absolutely doomed by the narrative and their attempts to save each other, even if they have to save the world in the process. It's about the family you choose, and about love (not even the romantic kind) bringing people together, and how people don't need to be strong to be important. It's a story of Yoojin turning back time to save his brother, and then saving a girl who needed help, and then saving a man who needed a friend... and he continues to reach out to people who didn't even know they needed human connection. It's about a doomed world that fears S-ranks as much as they revere them, because people with that kind of power are nothing short of monsters, but they are the only possible way of saving the world. It's about a boy rejected by the world, and his brother who rejected the world to keep him safe. (And later on, it's about a man who was meant to be a protagonist, but even he can't save the world from what's coming.)

How to Live as the Enemy Prince

MC was the prince of a country that was invaded and conquered for a mysterious time artifact, but after he was killed in battle he finds himself decades in the past as the sickly third prince of the enemy kingdom who was originally murdered before he reached adulthood. His goal was to help his original kingdom by preventing his new brother's ascension to the throne, yet he finds out that in this timeline, the king of his previous kingdom didn't have a younger brother who fought for him, and that the time artifact disappeared when he woke in the new body.

Max-Level Player's 100th Regression

MC is part of a brutal death game that he's consistently died to, only to realise right before his final regression that the last stage of the game required teammates-- and now he's on a journey not only to survive the game, but the level up the people around him so that they can finally defeat the death game. Almost made top 5 because the art is... hnnnng. So good. Also MC has a cute little brother he's very protective of, and I desperately wanted another story like S-Classes.

My In-Laws are Obsessed with Me

Genuine Fruits Basket successor, it feels like! After being murdered by her supposed loving family, MC wakes up weeks before her death and throws herself into an contract marriage with a duke powerful enough her family wouldn't dare go against, only to eventually find out that the duke's family has a mysterious and deadly curse-- one that she's immune to (because she's already died from it before), and her immunity sparks hope that perhaps the family curse can be broken after all. Really intriguing plot as it's soon revealed she's not the only one who died and then woke up several weeks in the past, and that there are outsiders who want to make use of the family's curse for their own gains.

The Crown Prince That Sells Medicine

Set in the same world 300 years after Greatest Estate Developer! A doctor wakes up as a sickly crown prince and the system once again pulls shenanigans where the only way to live is to save lots and lots of people, so he goes to save the novel protagonist who becomes his personal guard! Less than 20 chapters so far, but it's super promising and really funny!

The Newbie is Too Strong!

A great take on the tower ascension trope and streaming sponsorships-- except rather than the gods watching, it's other players who are watching the progress! After finding out the orphanage he grew up in would only have three more years of funding, MC discovers a series of videos sent to his phone that featured himself in the future challenging the tower and decides that would be the perfect way to make enough money to keep the orphanage going. By the time he's drawn into the tower, he's ready for every challenge-- or so he thinks.

Debut or Die

Reincarnation idol series with a system! MC wakes up one day three years in the past in someone else's body, with a system that tells him he has to debut as an idol within a year or die! He ends up on an idol show using unconventional thinking to climb his way to the top. Really funny concept with a lead character who has to be the most blank-faced and deadpan debut idol I've ever seen.

Pick Me Up

What I call 'I got isekai'ed into Raid: Shadow Legends' because that is what it is. MC gets isekai'ed into the mobile gacha game he played where characters stay dead if they die in battle, and now he's a character at the whim of an unseen, unknown 'master' who summons heroes and pushes them to fight-- even killing off characters by 'combining' them with others in order to help one get stronger. He has to survive the game he was playing, and this time without control of anything at all!

I Thought My Time was Up!

Hilarious. Almost made top five this time! MC is told she has three months to live, and so she proceeds to stop worrying about everything and live her life the way she wants-- and her bucket list includes having a hot boyfriend! Thus begins her utterly shameless and relentless pursuit of a fearsome Duke, winning the hearts of everyone around her with her fearless and go-getter demeanour (which is really just a result of not fearing death at this point).

Tyrant of Tower Defense

Another 'main character gets isekai'ed into the game he was playing', except with heavy Fear and Hunger and Bloodborne vibes. In a game where the goal was to defend a city against waves of monsters, each level more impossible than the next, the MC is out to discover the secret of the world he's stuck in-- because in his previous life he barely managed to defeat the game with one surviving character, and this time he wants everyone to live. Now he's out to discover just where the invading monsters come from, and why they're here.

Hunter World's Gardener

In a hunter and dungeons world, the MC is the class 'labourer' which doesn't quite allow him to raid dungeons, and thus he opens up a general store for hunters instead. My slice-of-life pick this month! Finally, a sweet cinnamon roll MC who is 1, not struggling in his life and 2, not being taken advantage of by other people in a way that will later leave them scarred or jaded! Seriously, this series is sweet in every way: a kind MC whose kindness is rewarded in turn, and people around him who genuinely want to help him keep that innocence and ensure no one takes advantage of him! (Another around 20 chapters so far story.)

My Favorite Novel has a Weird Epilogue

MC is an olympic gold medalist fencer who gets transmigrated into her favourite novel-- except 20 years after the horrible ending! All her favourite characters are dead and gone, and now she's determined to protect the son of her OTP, which means she's definitely going to do the same thing as her favourite character (his mom), and pretend to be a boy in order to be his knight. Again, around 20 chapters, but this is shaping up to be really really funny.

Moon-Painting Alchemist

Less than 20 chapters so far, and the first bl to make the list! MC is a genius alchemist tasked with creating a spell that would show people their future spouse, but when he finally thought he had it, the spell showed him-- a man? When he fixed the spell again, it showed him a boy the second time-- a boy that he soon meets, who disappears soon after right before he meets the man he saw in his spell-- who hires him to break a complicated curse. (I'd give this one a mature rating for the Duke's dirty mind, lol, but so far it's played off as humorous intrusive thoughts.)

The Tyrant Wants to be Good

This story led me to tears. About a tyrant queen who woke up at the beginning of her life after she was executed by her country, and rather than revenge and power, she decides that this time she will live her life quietly and learn to be a good person. Starting with her as a young, unloved princess, it really explores how she went down the path she did, and her quiet exhaustion as she examines what originally led her to kill her brother for the throne, and her descent into madness as she took up the crown in the first timeline. This time around, she's resigned to a life without love so long as she doesn't cause the downfall of the people she cares for. (Every scene with her and her brother had me in tears, because he loves her so much but it took her a lifetime and a half to see that.)

The Academy's Undercover Professor

I had to debate between this series and Estio on the top 5 list, because this one is also very, very good but in a different way. Complicated world-building, factions and politics, with events that will keep you on your toes-- this is almost a Sherlock Holmes-esque story where the intrigue keeps you going and you don't know who is actually who. Set in a fantasy version of Victorian England at a magical academy, the MC is accidentally roped into a role he was never meant for while he investigates criminal organizations and searches for relics that contain a hidden power, all the while being hunted by different knight and police groups.

Series I read that didn't quite cater to me but it doesn't mean that it wouldn't be good for other people (mostly because I really couldn't connect to the main character, but it doesn't mean the story is bad)!

Into the Spider-Verse: SP//dr: Edge of Spider-Verse #5 (Sponsored by WeirdKev27)

Hello all you happy webheads and welcome back to our second dose of action as your reward… for what I don't know. Maybe you petted a dog recently or something and they were a very good boy/girl. I don't know. With our main spider-trio clear, we're now into the other three spider-persons starting with our only other spider-woman SP//dr.. which is going to be annoying to type out already I can tell you that.

SP//dr is also the only spider-person in this retrosepective to not really have a lot of indivdual focus. She's mostly shown up in team up events only getting one shots in this and the edge of spider-geddon mini series, and the most she's gotten for a solo is a story arc is marvel unimited's spider-verse series. In contrast looking at the other spider-people miles is on his fifth solo series and has tons of minis, gwen has had three solo series and also tons of minis, Spider-Pig had a short lived solo we'll be visiting soon and multiple minis and while never having an ongoing, Noir has had three full mini series and a few one shots. And of course peter has had multiple runs of amazing, spectacular and adjetivelss spider-man along with marvel team up, giant size spider-man, two volumes of web of spider-man and spider-man unlimited, untolt tales of spider-man, two volumes of sensastional spider-man, webspinners tales of spiderman, spider-man's tangeled web, avenging spider-man, and spider-man/deadpool among COUNTLESS mini series. What i'm saying is while Peni has a great issue here and a great concept she really hasn't had the big character defining storyline most of her peers got, and out of the 6 chosen, she's easily the obscure pick, though it likely helped Lord and Miller switched out her origins considerably while leaning into the anime style to give them another distinct spidey to roll with. Kimiko Glenn's impecable as always performance probably didn't hurt.

So going into this.. Peni was a mystery to me, as I hadn't read this issue, spider-verse or spider-geddon. And boy howdy was this a massive fun suprise: For starters Peni was co-created by GERARD FUCKING WAY. For those who don't know him

But for those who don't, Gerard was, and maybe still is?, the lead singer and creative force of the emo band to end all emo bands My Chemical Romance. Naturally my faviorite album is their last one, an over the top and glorious punk album set in a comic style corprate wasteland and where Grand Motherfucking Morrison played the main bad guy. No joke, they showed up in two diffrent videos as the character. He rocks.

And for most people being a world famous rock star and having his own money bin only with pennies painted pink , black and red would be enough. For Gerard.. he wanted to write comics too and was damn good at it. He created Umbrella Academy out of his love for the x-men, which as far as I know he has'nt gotten to work on and i'ts a damn crime, and Doom Patrol, one of my faviorite DC Comcis teams. Thankfully he DID get to work on the latter and rescued them from a decades long limbo, crafting a run that's as batshit insane as it is damn fun and creative. It may not entirely make sense at times but like Morrison's own team defining run, it dosen't always need to to be awesome. He's also written multiple comics based on Danger Days, the album I mentioned, and the 12 issue series Cave Carson has a Cybernetic Eye. While his work is sporadic it's always memorable and this is no exception. So look alive sunshine as we plug in under the cut.

We open with the death of a spider-man: Peni Parker's dad peter dies horribly. How?

But there are two key points from this striking two page spread: SP//dr the man is dead.. btu the actual spider somehow bonded with him is alive

We then cut to young peni parker, age 10, who talks to her uncle ben and aunt mei who break the news which she takes with chilling calm… and then ask her to bond with SP//dr to help defend japan… and also prove their GREAT new caretakers by revealing they released the genetically altered spider her dad died with into the room to bite her without making sure she was okay with it. It bites her and a new spider is added to the web. As you can tell… they changed the tone a LOT with Peni. In the movie she's mostly just "LOOK ANIME'. Here.. it's more cyberpunk, with SP//dr likewise having a more mechanical design. I get Why they did it.. but wish they'd still kept peni unique while making her look anime instead of being generic anime school girl with robot buddy. Especially since SP//dr's armor is fucking sick looking as you could see on the cover

5 years later, she's on duty as this universe's mysterio is attacking.. and also really weird. While the guy inside we'll find out is some nerd in a cool suit and weird globe as usual… his way of attacking the populace is this cool ominous floating doom orb

It's honestly a hell of an interpretation and makes me mad we didn't get to see MORE of way's takes on various spidey rogues, as he naturally goes all out with it while still keeping the core: mysterio is still a showman, but more as a mad artist than a hollywood schster, and his hallucinations gas is stil la thing now just poored onto the street> The art is also incredible, fitting Way's pop punk astetic like a glove, being both colorful while also fitting the mildly gritty tone: this work is cyberpunk but more the anime brand with lots of flash and sound, aka the better version. Aunt May serves as Peni's mission contorla s she prepares to get in, admits sh'es a vegetarian and crashes in on mysterio while playing the song Love is a Weapon by Cult Summer Feat Gloss.. which is a song i'm not even sure actually exists.

What we get is an awesome sequence as our mechanized heroine busts in.. sadly she dosen't say this

But I think she DOES meet this guy eventually so it balances out. It's awesome especially once the hallucinogens kick in and our hero has to punch the guy out. We also find out he's a looney fan who sent her a mix cd.

We then cut to.. school as we see peni's id is public: SP//dr which is both the suit and the spider, and is confusing as you would imagine is there, and when Daredevil shows up to pick her up for superhero stuff she's excused. There's also what looks like anime mj looking at her. Neat.

I like this unvierse's daredevil too: he seems to work as SP//dr's handler, ;ally and a friend of her dad's, has a nice look to him (lookiing like armored daredevil but less 90's and more badass), and ikt's again why I wish we knew more or got a series, even a mini as this universe really ISN'T that explored. I mean granted given how way's work can go we could get more questions than answers, but we'd also get some real neat shit along the way.

We also get a really nice bit where the two break for lunch… where Peni both admits she's tired and asks about her dad. While we don't see MUCH of her here.. we get plenty of character as it's clear Peni feels lost, coming off stoic.. but it's clear there's a real sadness to her: She lost her dad, there's a job she was forced into and didn't ask for and she can never really have a normal life, something Peter, Miles and Gwen all struggle with, but it's magnified here: all of them at least can TRY thanks to the mask. Peni.. is stuck with everyone knowing she's the spider-person and we see that not having to hide.. doesn't make her feel any less alone.

The ending… is a bit more tied into the event than Gwen's.. I mean granted anything's better than

Btu the last few pages are Peni being greeted by Spider-Ham, does whatever a spider-pig does and Old Man Spider. Old Man Spider, who I hadn't seen before this is Ezikiel. He's a LOT to explain and I could just brush over it.. but i'm a wordy bastard so instead here's

JAKE EXPLAINS AN OLD SPIDER-MAN MOST OF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF AND DON'T CARE EXISTS

During the early good parts of J. Micheal Strazenski's long run on spider-man, we found out spider-man was tied into the "web of life and death" and picked as the spider-totem for his universe, with the reason he has so many animal foes being their drawn to him via destiny and stuff. I think it's fine: it's not a necessary explanation but I don't mind adding some magic to peter's science based world. He soon met Ezikel, a successful businessman who also had spider-powers and used them for personal gain, but showed up to help Peter against morlun, a mystical vampire man who hunts spider-people who was cool at the time but sadly got a bunch of generic siblings who are the main reason i'm not super into reading spider-verse and were wisely replaced with kingpin for the movie. Point is he's a cool old guy and in this universe peter died fighting morlun, so Eziekl became spider-man.

Anyways our heroes go to get the suit, and we get Peni stating she's a weapon to keep going till termination, seeing her once again brush her emotions aside… because the reality is too terrifying. All that matters is the job. So with that our spider-'s swing off and we get Spider-Ham's classic catchphrase.

I mean i'ts no crackers and milk... oh who am I kidding it's SO crackers and milk. That'll do pig. That'll do. INto The Spider-Verse #5 is amazing, a ncie short story. If I have any complaint it's that it feels fragmented, with three diffrent stories: peni fighting mysterio, peni and daredevil fighting thgs mysterio told them about, and spider-verse spider-verse. But the energetic tone, art and great characterization for peni means it comes quick, hits hard and leaves a hell of an impression. Hopefully we'll see Peni again in al lher death metal glory. For now.. this is a nice single tha tstands on it's own

Next Time: Just say Noir as a very different Peter Parker must avenge his uncle's murder and dawn a spiffy fedora.

MORE LORE this time it doesn't involve Reena (that much) and is just LJ and his carnival it's hc and a story but the story is gonna be angsty so I'll put it under a read more so you can skip it if you want :)

Okay so basically when LJ first was created, he was more of a dream figure for Isaac right

LJ could bring him to a carnival, but the carnival did not exist outside of Isaac's dreams, so it was a reflection of him.

Well, when Isaac abandoned LJ, LJ needed a purpose because otherwise he felt as though he was nothing

That is where LJ met Creation, a God-like being that could make almost anything

(Exceptions being humans, animals, etc)

Creation takes the souls of sentient beings and puts them back into other forms, for example, taking a lost soul and placing it into a vessel like a tea pot, with the right kind of magic.

The only problem is that Creation is not infinite; it needs a bodily host made from the two lineages that formed a pact to sacrifice someone once every so often. Without that host/sacrifice, Creation will eventually use all of its magic, and die out.

So Creation figures it can use LJ to harvest souls to stay alive long enough to have another host, plus, a little company isn't so bad every once in a while

Upon meeting Creation and becoming bound to it as a proxy of sorts, Creation grants LJ access to a pocket in the fabric of reality, where he has an actual carnival, which Creation uses and continues to use as a reservoir for souls just in case

(It has to use it because kid souls aren't exactly very large because THEYRE KIDS)

Issue #2 is eventually a woman comes along and it's at this point that Slender isn't the nicest person, so he basically locks her in the basement and uses her to try to further his rule.

GUESS WHAT BABY THE MULTIVERSE IS REAL YOU CAN TAKE THE KID OUT OF THE UNDERTALE FANDOM BUT YOU CANT TAKE THE U

So anyway she's from an alternate dimension where she's married to Slender but he has 99 problems and a bitch ain't one

So LJ is like "wow, I have emotions and I feel bad for her" so they become friends :) and a little more :)

And then he's like "she talks about her kids a lot, I should give her some so she doesn't have to miss them too much because they're right here!!!"

spoiler alert: that motherfucker is infertile.

SO HE GOES TO CREATION

And Creation is like "[WHY][DONT][YOU][MAKE][VESSELS][FOR][YOUR][SOULS][?]"

Yeah it talks weird keep scrolling

And LJ is flabbergasted and is like "oh em gee you're right I have all of these souls and I need somewhere to put some of them too!"

Insert comically large corn maze

LJ, being the sick bastard (/aff) he is, creates a game for the souls.

Start at the edges of the maze, no cutting through walls, get to the middle and jump down the well, without getting caught by LJ. With a 5 minute headstart, of course.

Well our notable figures here are LJ, and a girl named Eloise.

Eloise was LJs first victim after Isaac, an older girl, about 10, who was the oldest in an orphanage she was in.

And you know how they treated women/girls in the 1800s

Eloise made her way around the maze, she'd gather kids, and lead them towards the center, but when LJ would pop out, she'd disappear, off to help another less doomed child or group.

Eventually, two were left, a boy and a girl, Mary and Tansel. And Eloise had brought them to the center.

LJ rounds the corner, jumping out at them, but Eloise is quick to dump the two into the well and run away.

With the soul he needed, and the extra one that was like a little bonus, he set to work making a line of patchwork

Infusing the souls with the dolls was easy enough, she loved them so much, but was slightly surprised when they turned into children, but loved them nonetheless.

Until she was removed from the house, moved in with another mf, had a real baby AND GOT EXECUTED

The dolls were promptly ushered back into the carnival and work as performers!!

Chapter 4 - Whatever it is that we are [Chishiya x Reader]

Finding Kuina had been a major upgrade in your life. Both for you and Chishiya.

For you, because you finally had someone who took an actual interest on your life, who wanted to hear what you liked, what you didn't, what you did before all of this… and what you planned to do after. Who wanted to hear about your favorite animal (clearly GORILLAS), favorite genre of books (medieval fantasy, is there anything better? Lots of swords, and magic, and fighting!) or favorite movie (FIGHT CLUB!).

"You like pretty violent stuff for how sweet you are." Chishiya had teased, with that half smile that, when directed to you, made your knees weak.

Well, maybe it was true. You did like violence in media, as long as it was not real and you were not the target of it or the one to inflict it. But also, no, not really, since you had also maintained an hour long discussion with Kuina one night about how Shrek was probably the best movie ever created and why and it was the furthest thing from violent you could think of - it was a movie about a man (ogre) and his donkey! And love!

Anyway… For Chishiya it had been great, since now he didn't feel like he had to actually maintain a conversation with you. Or entertain you. Or take care of you.

Although, to be honest, it was not as if he did before.

Yet… you told yourself that was not the complete truth, remembering the night he gave you that damn blanket and slept next to you in the rocking chair.

Why did he have to do that? ("So that you wouldn't catch a cold and became a burden" he probably would answer) Why couldn't he just let you be cold and go to sleep in the comfy big bed? (Okay, you didn't really have an answer for that…) Why did he have to mess with your feelings a little bit longer? And why, if those feelings had their source in the loneliness you felt every single day since coming to this world, did they not disappear when Kuina joined your little team?

When you asked yourself that, you wanted to rip your hair from your head and scream into the nothingness. Luckily, you knew better than that (did you? Because you were literally so close to doing it…) and tried to keep busy as much as possible. Which was not hard since you landed on The Beach.

They took you three in, of course, why wouldn't they? You had some cards they needed and were willing to help them fulfill their dream of getting the whole deck, if only because their hypothesis of leaving this place once that was done gave you the slightest bit of hope. What else was there?

So there you were, sitting next to the pool in a bikini they had given you, your legs submerged in the water while you looked around you, still in complete disbelief and shock that people were able to forget about the deadly card-hunting most would have to do that night. In your head, you compared it to students partying the night before a midterm. Only failing an exam didn't have deadly consequences for the most part.

"Are you okay?" The voice was coming from next to you. From the corner of your eye, you saw Chishiya sitting down, in a swimsuit, of course, complying with the rules of The Beach, but still wearing his white hoodie, which made you smile softly.

"Yeah… I'm just impressed." Moving your head, you pointed to a group of people in their 20s. They were clearly drunk, each one with a beer in their hand, a girl kissing a boy intensely on the lips. All of them were dancing, laughing and having the time of their life. Impending doom didn't seem to affect them, and you wish you didn't let it affect you so much.

He nodded, understanding what you meant, but did not share his opinion with you. It didn't matter, you were used to it. Although you would lying if you said you didn't want to know. What he felt, what he thought.

He broke the silence after a few minutes. "You've changed again."

You stared at him, frowning, not knowing what he meant.

"You are somewhere in between now. You are not like when we first met, but you are also not as you were before we arrived here."

Well, it was true. It's not that you didn't feel comfortable in the beach, but there were too many people to your liking. Too many people pretending like nothing was wrong, living in denial. It was like a little oasis of happiness in the middle of a desert of despair. And it didn't fool you, but you wish it would. Happiness seemed easier to achieve when it was Kuina, Chishiya and you… or just Chishiya and you.

"I am like a cat."

He smirked, curiosity shining in his eyes. "Care to elaborate?"

"So, back home, my parents have two cats. And when we moved from one place to another, the cats would lose a lot of their hair, and even their whiskers! We didn't know what was happening, and we were worried, so we took them to the vet. She said that cats do not react well to changes in their routine, it stresses them." You stopped for a second, to see if he was following. He inclined his head slightly to the right, as a way of asking you to continue, the smile not leaving his lips. "I am like that. I don't like change. I want to feel safe, I want to eat every day at the same hour and have my little hiding space… Preferably one that does not have a lock destroyed by superglue."

He chuckled at this. The Hatter had said it to you when you arrived - the lock of all the doors at The Beach wasn't functional. There was no privacy, no secrets. No hiding anything from others.

"And don't get me started when my parents decided to get a third cat. Again, all of them were so stressed! They couldn't bear the sight of the new kitten, so they would hiss, and growl." You said. Only, you didn't know the word for hiss in his language, so you simply did a "hssssssssssssssss" sound, putting the meanest face you could.

"You didn't hiss or growl when Kuina joined us." he pointed out, visibly entertained.

You couldn't help but laugh, shaking your head from side to side, and ended up shrugging because you didn't really have an answer for that.

He lifted his hand, up until his fingers brushed against your hair. And the laughter disappeared, and all that was left was yearning. A yearning for him to touch you, to feel him close. A yearning that was almost painful, as if you had been suddenly kicked in the stomach.

"You are also not losing any hair." He observed, coming closer, pretending to inspect your scalp, while his fingers somewhat distractedly played with a strand of hair.

"…I guess not." You whispered, feeling like, at that moment, even if you were surrounded by people, only Chishiya and you existed.

You felt empty-headed. He was only touching your hair. It was not as if this was the first time a boy had done that. But still, it felt different.

After what felt like hours, but was probably no more than a few seconds, his hand descended and went back to laying on his side. Closer to yours than before, fingers almost touching.

You gazed at the group you had been observing before Chishiya came, trying to clear your head. Your cheeks were burning, your body felt feverish, you knew he must have seen that you were red as a tomato. But he was still looking at you, with an indecipherable look on his face.

You couldn't stand it any longer, the proximity was killing you and you wondered if you should just go to your room when…

You moved your hand closer to him, to the point you were touching.

And interlaced your fingers with his.

He looked more curious than surprised, but you know he couldn't have expected this. You had been travelling together for a while and still had never touched. Until now.

You were just glad he was not pulling away, if not actively participating in the hand holding.

You didn't know what was happening to you.

But whatever it was that you were… You just wanted it to last a little longer.

Avery was left in his biological father and his husband's care when he was only a baby, being the result of a one night stand, Avery's mom never felt like she was fit for the role and so she tracked Avery's dad down and left the baby with him. Avery lived a very happy childhood making no distinction between his biological father and his partner, to Avery they were both dad, both his own flesh and blood. Despite this, there was always something troubling the boy, he was loved, cared for, yes, but in a way, he felt unwanted, because he could never understand his mother's actions, and the fact she never tried looking for him, check on how he was doing, even after many years, refusing any contact left Avery with this opened wound he hasn't been able to fully close. It was when he reached his teenage years the problems began, while Avery was always a sweet, kind person, he also struggled with impulse control and anger issues, due to the never knowing his mother and her side of the family, but also this being something that runs in the family as his father struggled with the same problems. Avery would get in fights at school he couldn't stand being bullied and would never back down when someone was not nice to him, also defending those who were bullied, though mostly this was an excuse to let some of the rage out. Avery's parents did their best to help him trough this issues, while one would sit down and talk to him, teaching how do deal with all those feelings, the other would help him find a way to gain more control of those impulses trough music... and that's how Avery fell even harder for it, latter becoming a music producer and playing guitar in a friend's band. So, his life was pretty good, Avery felt he had enough with his many friends and family, he was happy, and then...one night...everything changed... It was after a band's performance, Avery had a little more to drink than usual, which lead him to notice someone, and while he never really cared much for a relationship, love, sex, had honestly never been something that present in his life, there was something about this girl, he couldn't tell what, but Avery found himself agreeing to spend the night with her... on the way to her home an accident happened... they hit something with the car, Avery couldn't just allow her to keep driving and let whatever it was to die on the side of the road so he got out of the car to check. And that's what doomed him... He didn't had time to check what was the animal they hit, something come running out of the woods, something big...next thing he knows, the beast is on top of him, Avery feels claws, and teeth and...the car rushing away, she left him, she left him to die... He doesn't know what happened, who found him, all that Avery remembers is waking up in the hospital, his parents worried sick by his bedside... And Avery's body began to change... he couldn't explain what was happening, his senses were sharper, noises were hurting his ears and the rage...oh the rage...it was just too much to keep in... After a fight with his dad turned violent, Avery knew he needed to go, seek help, he had just hurt one the men he loved the most in the whole world, he was changing, becoming something he didn't like, he hurt his family! The rage was taking over and it felt not even working on his music was helping, not like before. So Avery left, to work on himself and figure out what he was becoming...living in Greywood for the past month helped him figure out what was happening, and now Avery hopes to find others like him, others that can help him gain the control over his powers he needs. Because there's no way he's coming back to his family and risk hurting them again... Or even wrose...
