Remembering David Bowie
8th January, 1947
David Bowie was born David Robert Jones in Brixton, South London, UK
Bowie paired with Queen in 1981 for a one-off single release, "Under Pressure".
🔸Rudi Dolezal: With what other people would, could you think of co-operating like you did with Bowie, and Jackson, on this unreleased stuff? What other people who are interesting to you
Freddie Mercury: No it depends, I mean I just um, I don't, I don't sort of think of those things, I mean sometimes you just meet friends and er, if you, if you think about er, doing a song together you talk about that, otherwise that's not what I think about all the time, I mean they're, Elton and I have been friends for a long time, but we never, we've actually sort of said to each other one day we probably go in there together and, and, and write a song, but it's, it's, it's better being friends, you know what I mean, and er, and the thing about it is, is spontaneity, so I mean, it's just er, if it happens that we're talking and suddenly we say 'oh, let's go in the studio and do it', that's the best thing, and that's what happened with David Bowie, we were just, he was just around, we were having dinner for a couple of days and we, we were recording in the studio and he just said 'oh, maybe I'll come in and just see what happens', so it wasn't planned, if it's planned then it's boring, because then it's just, and we were just going in there and, fooling around to see what happens, and suddenly there's this song started taking shape and we said 'oh that's quite nice, let's work on it a bit' and um, the result of that was 'Under Pressure' so. I'm not really um, I don't get up every morning and say OK which, who am I gonna work with today, that, those kind of things don't work
- Freddie Mercury

Madonna's Summer Song -- Holiday
An artist’s first hit!  For some it’s also their last hit.  For some talented artists, it’s the first of many.  But, there’s a lot that the first hit often tells you about the artist.  Consider Madonna’s first hit “Holiday”.  Madonna was living in New York and frequented nightclubs to get disc jockeys to play her demo songs.  Mark Kamins a DJ at Danceteria (and friend of Madonna) arranged a meeting for her with Seymour Stein of Sire Records (part of Warner Brothers). He gave her a three single deal, with an option for an album.  Her singles cracked the top 10 in Billboard’s “Hot Dance Club Songs” chart. With that success, Warner Brothers hired a producer and they began to cobble together the album that would become her first, the self-titled “Madonna”.
Madonna was unhappy with the way the album was progressing and the way the songs were moving away from the sparser beat-based form of the original demos. This is the fork in the road where things changed. As a New York dance club aficionado Madonna asked John Benitez the DJ from The Fun House to do some remixing of the tracks.  The Fun House was a 26th Street Manhattan dance club, with a decidedly anti-Studio 54 club vibe, full of younger less affluent clientele.  Benitez knew the pulse of the city’s youth. Nicknamed “Jellybean” because of his initials, he remixed her singles “Burning Up”, “Borderline” and “Lucky Star”. They needed one more song for the album and “Jellybean” knew of the song “Holiday” written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens-Crowder for their own musical act Pure Energy. They refused at first, but agreed after meeting with Madonna.  Again, another game changing moment. Benitez then produced the track.
Released in August 1983 “Holiday” hit #1 a month later on Billboard’s “Dance Club Songs” chart and then #16 on Billboard’s Top 100.  It also hit #25 on Billboard’s “Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs” chart. By the time of Live Aid on July 13, 1985 Madonna was an international star with a #1 hit song, multiple top 5 songs and the title role in the movie “Desperately Seeking Susan”. But, with all that going for her, she reached back to her first big hit "Holiday" for her set at Live Aid.  The huge crowd and the mood of the song and her “no auto-tune” singing makes it the very best version of a great song.  It’s a great summer song!

Damn right. I never get sick of it!
Queen would return exactly one year later and conquer Wembley and the world once again!
He came. He sang. He conquered.

We talk about this a lot atleast irl, but I can't wait for the day my niece or someone maybe gets into Käärijä in like 15 years, just like kids are now getting into old rock bands, and I can tell them what it was like to actually experience everything as it was happening. Like yes we did have a fucking yogurt with his face on it, he had hairspray, you went to London and saw his cumface ad on a bus stop, around nye you couldn't step on the metro without seeing his face on the vuosi vaihtuu ad, during spring facebook marketplace and tori was filled with any neon green item being sold as "Käärijä toilet brush" or "Käärijä bottle opener", when he lost his bolero on the highway it made national headlines, every week you'd hear of yet another small town filled to the brim as he performed at some tiny festival, during Eurovision we dressed our lantern bearers in Helsinki in giant boleros, a presidential candidate referenced him as like the 8th word in his opening speech, he really was fucking everywhere. Like how crazy that all of us got into this as it all started and we've seen these updates live as they come

That day in July when Queen ruled the whole world and it only took a couple of notes for Freddie to become emperor for at least 21 minutes. GOAT!
