Since When does the Fandom Hate Horses?
It absolutely baffles me that people out there hate the scene in RoP where Galadriel and Elendil go horse riding. Of all the things to be nit-picky about, you chose that?!?
I shit you not, I saw a review that complained that the horse riding scene was "a pointless usage of riding in slow motion and something PJ would have never wasted time on" (I'm paraphrasing here, but that was the gist).
Like, AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Seriously?
I so wish I could find that review again because it was so damn obvious that this guy's hate had nothing to do with the fact that riding horses in slow motion took up screen time.
I mean, let's look at the evidence. Peter Jackson would never have had people riding horses in slow motion, huh? Bud, I think it's time to rewatch those movies.
Oh yeah, I guess you are right. No slow-motion horses in the Fellowship of the Ring.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Come I think of it, there was none of that in the Two Towers either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, imagine how lame that would have been in Return of the King.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(This was maybe not the best choice of gifs, but you probably get it)
In my personal opinion, this scene was done in a way that blends beautifully with the previous movie adaptations.
So, what was this dude's (and other people's) problem?
Let's take a look at the scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apparently, I am in the minority here (at least, that's what it feels like), but this scene was breathtaking.
The colors! The flowing robes! The stunning cremello horse! The cinematography!
This. Is. Art.
Watching this scene made me understand exactly how this show is "a love letter to Tolkien".
Yet a lot of people hate it.
And, surprise surprise, it's not about the horse or the use of slow motion.
Let's compare this scene to its predecessors, shall we?
What do they have in common? For the most part, they can be described as:
Dark
Grim
Urgent
Perilous
Dangerous
This new scene, on the other hand, can be described as:
Bright
Light
Freeing
Leisurely
High Spirited
Two completely different moods, with two different receptions. This is surely a huge part of the negative reaction. People just did not like the lack of tension.
And that's ok.
If you found this scene boring and generally unimpressive due to this lack of narrative pressure, that is completely valid.
But if that was the root cause of the widespread hate for this scene, I would not be writing this.
Because "cringy" is not an adjective used to describe something you find boring and unimpressive. And cringy is the descriptor I have seen used over and over again.
So what about it is "cringy"?
Well, it's not the slow motion. Many people pointed out that there was a lot of it. Does the scene lean too heavily upon slow motion? Meh, in the end, it boils down to personal preference there, but as I have pointed out above, slow motion alone is not the source of enmity.
Nor is it the artful aspect. Many people have expressed their appreciation for the shot where we can see Galadriel's flowing robes.
No. Interestingly enough, the shot that I see the most complaints on, the moment that the enraged masses cry "cringy", is this one.
Tumblr media
I mean, look at her! For the first time, she feels joy. And it shows.
Our poor emotionally constipated Galadriel, who has shown nothing but pride, rage, and impatience (all symptoms of her trauma from the hell that was the First Age), is finally happy, even for a brief while.
This poor woman has been shown nothing but disbelief, skepticism, scorn, and outright hostility from other characters. Everywhere she turns, these people patronize her and her growing sense of urgency (I think a lot of people have forgotten/are not aware that she has foresight). Her concerns are not unfounded.
Finally, she catches a break, and her expressions show it. Morfydd Clark does a wonderful job of capturing that freeing release.
Instead, people say it "looks ridiculous, laughable, and out of place", and they complain that it "looks like an advert for a feminine care product".
No. I fear that this reaction stems from something else. Because this was never about the horses.
Our society is twisted and skewed so that many people are not willing to tolerate a female lead—let alone a woman who does all the things that typically male characters do. They have no interest in a female-led narrative. They don't want to see women expressing emotions that don't immediately cater to their egos.
This is mostly a man problem, hence the several instances I've heard of men complaining that this scene looks like advertising for feminine care products (since when did that become a derogatory thing?), so in all fairness, I now point out that some women are also guilty of this through internalized misogyny.
Now, I'm not saying you have to like this scene. You don't have to like anything about RoP. If you don't like it, my advice is to stop watching it and making yourself and everyone else miserable. Go find something you actually like. I promise it will make you feel better.
But, if you hated this scene and other parts of RoP because you are mad that a female lead is showing emotions and doing things that don't fit with your ideas on how women should look or act, then I have a few choice words for you stinky misogynists.
Eca, a mitta lambetya cendelessë orcova, catassa.

It's a little-known fact that the actual reason Tolkien objected to the presence of Father Christmas in Narnia was that his children had been receiving letters from the real Father Christmas for years, and he was nothing like that.

20. watching the same Christmas movies for the umpteenth time
She was just as gentle unwrapping her gift, her eyes growing wide as she revealed the title and then the cover, an antique painted version of Father Winter with his sack of gifts. She traced the silver title, the small printed name of the author, and then dragged gaze back up to Bill.
“Where the hell did you find a copy of Letters to Father Winter?” She breathed the question out, barely able to process what she was holding and her surprise.
“I have my ways.” His smile grew as he watched her wonder and her wide green eyes, the way her mouth parted and she was at a loss for words. “And a few little Vipers to help me search around.”
“Gods…” She shook her head and then hugged the book to her chest. “I can’t believe it.”
She quickly approached him, one arm still clutching the book close and the other wrapping around him so they hugged with the book pressed between them. He nuzzled his face into her slightly sweet-smelling hair and pressed a firm kiss to her head.
“You did so much for me,” she whispered against his chest.
“I want to,” he replied, his voice just as soft. “You deserve it.”
She looked up at his words and crashed her lips to his, pouring every ounce of love and affection into the kiss. He groaned and grabbed her hips, holding her close as she melted against him.
“Kids are gonna be here soon,” he grumbled when they parted for breath, their foreheads pressed together.
“Damn.” She laughed breathlessly and kissed him quickly. “I love you.”
“I love you too, Laura.” He pulled back and he adjusted his uniform while she set the book aside.

The Mysterious Star
Of the many things I see people absolutely losing their minds over in RoP, the most lore noteworthy is the star that shows up on Galadriel's armor, as seen below.
Tumblr media
Now, many people (not all of you, I see the wise still voicing their objections) have jumped to the outrageous conclusion that this is the symbol of Fëanor. These people (and I would agree with them if I thought for a second they were correct) are horrified that Galadriel would openly wear the symbol of her genocidal maniac uncle who murdered her mother's kin on a petty whim.
That point alone is the first reason why I do not think anyone on the RoP team would be stupid enough to label it as such. Fortunately, Fëanor does not hold the Middle-Earth copyright (if you are looking for someone who would, try Varda Elentári).
Many astute people have accurately pointed out that many, many elves use the star as their symbol and/or embedded them in their heraldic device. This is because when the first elves awoke at Cuiviénen, the first they saw was the stars, and the first they heard was the sound of flowing water. Henceforth, all elves had an enormous love for both things.
Notable mentions in the "I, an elf, use stars as my symbol club" include Finwë (Galadriel's grandfather), Fingolfin (her sane uncle), Finarfin (her father), Eärendil (Elrond's father, and Galadriel's first cousin twice removed), and Gil-Galad (Galadriel's great nephew), to name a few.
Now, Finwë's star has 16 points, Fëanor's, Fingolfin's, and Finarfin's all have 8 points, Eärendil's has 6, while Gil-Galad has a whopping total of 12 stars ranging from 4-6 points each.
The star Galadriel wears here has 8 points, falling into the category of Fëanor, Fingolfin, and Finarfin. As I have said before, we can easily rule Fëanor out. While Fingolfin would be an acceptable answer, it most likely is the symbol of her father Finarfin.
However, an interesting thing I have noticed, makes me think the star might be derived from elsewhere. If you would, please hear me out.
First, let's take a look at Galadriel's armor in the beginning.
Tumblr media
Notice the distinct lack of the star on the breastplate of both her armor and that of her comrades. Now, why is that?
The most simple answer is that these sets of armor are from different places. We can assume the first is from High King Gil-Galad, whose command Galadriel is under. This set, she abandons when she yeets from the ship to Valinor and into the sea. Yeah, there was no taking that with her for sure.
So where does this new set of armor come from?
There is only one place it could be.
Númenor.
Tumblr media
This here is what I think is probably the first time we will see Galadriel wearing this armor, and that is hands down Númenor in the background, a Númenórean soldier at her side, and a Númenórean ship she is boarding. Númenor is also the only place where she would have the opportunity of acquiring new armor before reaching Middle Earth.
This leads us back to the question of who else uses star symbology?
The answer again is Númenor.
The Númenóreans, as once close buddies with the star-loving elves, also love the stars.
Elendil himself says that his name means "one who loves the stars" in addition to "Elf-friend". The isle that the kingdom of Númenor is built on is named Elenna, meaning "starwards", and the island itself is formed in the shape of a 5 pointed star.
While the 8-pointed star Galadriel wears does not quite match the Númenórean symbology, I present you with the following screenshot.
Tumblr media
I ask pardon for the darkness of this screenshot, so let me explain if you do not recognize it.
This is from the scene where Míriel leads Galadriel to the Palantir. Note, in the top center, on the wall in gold, is a star with 8 points. It is nearly identical to the star seen on Galadriel's armor.
Coincidence, I think not!
While Númenor is not typically associated with 8-pointed stars in the lore, I think it is probably a safe guess that for the Rings of Power show, 8-pointed stars are going to be a symbol of Númenor.
So why is this 8-pointed star nowhere else on Númenórean armor? Yeah, ok, I don't have an answer to that one.
Did they make that armor special for Galadriel? Is it old armor still sitting around from when all of Númenor was an elf-friend? Yeah, I don't know.
But, I sure am excited to see this in the next episode or two. Maybe they'll address it, maybe they won't. I don't know. I don't have foresight.
If I'm wrong, then feel free to say that I'm running headlong into laughable speculation like a colt in full gallop.
But I'm also damn sure that is no star of Fëanor.

Thanks to Mr. Professor J. R. R. Tolkien (sir), I finally look at names on paper like “Celebrant” and read them as keh-le-brant (or “brahnt” sometimes), even though it’s a word in the works of Brandon Sanderson, who (while endearing) has the linguistic sensitivity of Google Translate.

To anyone who believes fairy tale romances never happen in real life, may I remind you that JRR and Edith Tolkien met and experienced a forbidden love in their youth, and then were separated for five whole years because of his guardian’s rules that he could not date till he was 21, and she got engaged to someone else only because she assumed he’d forgotten her and lost hope that she could ever be with him, but then on his 21st birthday, he wrote her a letter saying he still loved her and wanted to marry her, she responded basically saying ‘if I’d known you hadn’t left me on the shelf, I would never have said yes to anyone else,’ then a week later she greeted him at the train station and then immediately dumped her fiancé, and they got married and she converted to his religion and danced for him in a flowering field far away from the trenches into which he was drafted, which left such an impression that he crafted an entire story about the most beautiful maiden in the world who danced in the woods and made enormous sacrifices to be with the man she loved, and they had four kids and remained faithful to each other and blissfully grew old together and their gravestones are now marked with the names of that same fictional couple that he created, who broke every rule and overcame every possible obstacle to be together and get a happy ending, who only did all that because he based it all on their own real love story.

I've been rereading some of my old travel diaries from my early 20's, and one of them seriously reads like a slow-burn fanfic. I was on tour with a small indie band and there was a cute guy my age traveling with the band. And we spent two weeks "accidentally" hanging out and sitting close to each other at the merch table in smoky bars and reading Tolkien poetry to each other and taking walks at the beach and sharing food and stargazing and sleeping next to each other on living room floors and giving each other back rubs and talking late into the night gazing into each other's eyes.
We never kissed. We never even held hands. I pretended to fall asleep on his shoulder once in the car, and one day I gave him a little kiss on the cheek. And that was it. We said goodbye two weeks later and we both thought it was forever and I pined so hard that I threw up.
A month later he sent me an apologetic letter saying that he was sorry for being so presumptuous when I clearly had no romantic interest in him, but that he had to be honest that he was in love with me. And I was like, "What?! He was in love with me this whole time???"
So yeah, we're married now (celebrated ten years last autumn) but if you're ever wondering if your slow-burn fic is too slow, or that your characters are too oblivious, just remember me and my now-spouse mutually pining over each other every single second of the day for two weeks without ever saying a word to each other about how we felt. I was reading my own diary yelling, "JUST KISS HIM ALREADY!"

haven't seen this on here yet so:
Tumblr media
in case you don't want to slog through the shitscape that is the bird/letter website, take a peek beneath the cut (shamelessly copied from the something awful forums dungeon meshi thread)
- Her first memory of video games was watching her father playing Wizardry on Famicom, also Dragon Quest, Ultima, and Fire Emblem among others.
- She was a difficult child so her parents didn't let her play. Wizardry is a boring game to watch, but the monster illustrations on the walkthrough evoked her imagination and made her keep watching.
- She only started becoming a serious gamer after the serialization of Dungeon Meshi was locked, for research purposes. Before that, she read fantasy novels such as The Neverending Story (Michael Ende) and The Lord of the Rings (JRR Tolkien).
- The international title for Dungeon Meshi: Delicious in Dungeons was decided by her editor.
- D&D popped up a lot when she researched the history of video games, so she read the rule books, replay novels, and games inspired by D&D.
- One of the first games she studied was the Legend of Grimrock (game's 80% off on Steam atm). Originally, she wanted Dungeon Master (FTL Games) which was famous for "RPG with meals" but hunting down the game and machine was too much.
- She didn't like games other than turn-based RPGs at first, but she decided to stop being picky and play anything that piqued her interest.
- She played Zelda: BotW and TotK on a borrowed Switch from her editor due to the console's scarcity at the time.
- She enjoyed Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War for their stories. RDR2's incredible attention to detail had Kui engrossed so much that she asked her editor and other mangaka to play it so she could discuss it with them.
- Kui praised The Witcher 3 localization as something only possible with full support from the developer. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of her all-time favorites.
- Papers, Please was her first taste of indie games.
- Disco Elysium is the perfect game for her due to the lack of fighting, intriguing story, charming character interaction, and top-down perspective. She tried playing it in English at first due to an unlikely chance for JP loc, but it was out of her ability. Thus she is forever grateful to Spike Chunsoft for localizing it.
- Kui played Baldur's Gate 3 from the time it was in Early Access. Again, she's grateful for Spike Chunsoft's JP loc. She hoped BG3's success would bring the possibility of JP loc for other titles too, such as Pathfinder: wotr
- She likes games with top-down perspective because they have narration text for monologues and scenery description. Even if the graphic is lacking, the texts show the atmosphere and each character's behavior and psyche. Also, characters that react to your choices.
- She praised Unpacking and House Flipper for being able to tell what kind of person lives there only through their belongings, and that there's no right or wrong for the placements; she would make the best arrangement and then enjoy her hard work while sipping tea.
- The biggest inspiration for Dungeon Meshi was the Cosmic Forge pen from Wizardry VI. With improved graphics from its predecessor, now it could show broken farming tools in the background and many more details that made exploration so much fun.
- At the time of the interview (Dec '23) she still hadn't watched DunMeshi anime, but she attended the recording sessions. She's embarrassed that the dialog she wrote now acted passionately by professionals. Marcille's screaming was wonderful but also made her want to flee.
- Kui was anxious about the CP2077 anime adaptation, but she was relieved it was the Night City she knows and loves.
- Other than minor adjustments, she left it to TRIGGER as to how to adapt
- She's happy that Mitsuda Yasunori was chosen as the anime composer, as she used to play Chrono Cross and rewatched the opening many times.
- Her anticipated games in 2024 are Cloudpunk, Nivalis, and Avowed.
- DunMeshi would be hard to adapt into a game because in the first place, what Kui depicted in the manga are parts that are omitted in games for the sake of brevity.
- If DunMeshi game was Wizardry-like, it'd be told through Laios' perspective and eating was essential not to die
