The Butterfly Cluster, M6 // Wolfgang Promper
The Butterfly Cluster is an open cluster, a star cluster of only a few tens to a few thousand stars that were formed at (roughly) the same time. These are loosely bound, and so can come in a multitude of shapes as they are disrupted and dispersed.
The Butterfly Cluster was discovered in 1654 by Giovanni Hodierna. It is likely around 1,600 light years from Earth, making it just 12 light years across. It has about 120 member stars, with most of them being hot blue giants.
