I am still not over the fact that Magneto immobilized both Rogue and Gambit to stop them from doing something stupid and then sheltered them with his last power.
Because he knows Rogue would jump into the pits of hell after him and Gambit would follow her every time.

Herondale Textpost #30              [In Simon's Van in CoB]
Clary: So what's with the 'hey' thing?
Simon: What 'hey' thing?
Clary: The 'hey' thing that guys always do. Like when you saw Jace and Alec, you said 'hey', and they said 'hey' back. What's wrong with 'hello'?
Simon: 'Hello' is girly. Real men are tense. Laconic.
Clary: So the more manly you are, the less you say?
Simon: Right. That's why when major badasses greet each other in movies, they don't say anything, they just nod. The nod means, 'I am a badass, and I recognize that you, too, are a badass', but they don't say anything because they're Wolverine and Magneto and it would mess up their vibe to explain.
Jace: I have no idea what you're talking about.

I want to talk more about Rogue. How she’s left a queen over a broken dream, wearing a crown over a broken ideal and so many deaths.
Tumblr media
I think Erik knows. I think his heart aches. Because he’s lived with himself and his survivor’s guilt throughout. And he’s inflicted that on her.
Tumblr media
I wonder if she understands. I wonder if she knows the reason why she was the right person for Genosha. I wonder if, once the pain in her heart quiets down, she will truly understand Erik’s ask and the responsibly he needed to share with her. Because she is better than him. Better than anyone who’s only known how to play on just one side of the fence.
Because she is the only one strong enough to overcome.
Everyone is so focused on Magneto and Gambit and what they did. It was astonishing. But we need to talk more about the ones that are left with the excruciating task of having to rise up from the ashes and fill the void.

Magneto was happy for one day. No. For one evening. A couple of hours that made him think - ‘There is a light at the end of the struggle. There is finally a victory; there is finally a dream instead of a fight. There is a brighter future.’
For mutant-kind. And for once, just for once, for himself too. Finally able to see a world that’s worth living in and a world worth sharing with someone. For a couple of moments he could allow himself to see what’s right in front of him.
And then it was gone.
Tumblr media
I too, would lose my kindness. And I would never forgive.

This is where my heart exploded! I'll cherish this moment with its narrative.
I don't want a love drama, I just want these two when they are at their best: understanding one another, the kind of understanding that happens without words. They had that in the comics, and I know people like to freak out about it, but I think there is a level of respect and honesty (through the good and the bad) that really clicked for me. (especially in later years). And I say that as someone who grew up with Rogue and Gambit as the OTP.

‘I wish to be alone, Rogue.’
To which she basically says ‘Maybe you do, but we both know it’s not what you need.’
Rogue continues to be one of the few people that can casually call Magneto out on his bullshit and it fills my heart with joy.
The best part is that on most occasions, when she sees right through him, and tells things as they are, he doesn’t pull back, doesn’t double down, doesn’t get angry, doesn’t retaliate. He is grateful for it. He accepts it. Keeps him humble. Keeps him grounded. And even in those versions in the comics where he refuses to acknowledge her point of view or back down from his ideals, we still get to see how her words matter to him.
It’s been one of the things that drew me to their dynamic to start with and I never expected for any of this to be so well shown in the animated series.

‘But you were worried if you still felt how much he loved you, you wouldn’t be able to go through with your crusade.’
Yep, even today this line still plays like a pingpong ball between my mind and heart.
Tumblr media
She sees right through him, like it’s her job!!! She says the things this man is afraid of formulating coherent thoughts about. She learned his defensive mechanisms because she’s been there with him, in a similar scenario before. And the fact that he is silently acknowledging it just shows how effortlessly comfortable they can be around each other.
I am (still) losing my mind over how this entire scene was written. It was so beautiful and deep, with a complete understanding of what made their connection in Savage Land (comics) memorable.

Filed under ‘penny for your thoughts’ :
In Age of X, when Magneto says ‘there must be a shrine in some remote corner of your being. A place of sanctity.’, in that entire speech, and in that moment, that place for him is Legacy. It’s Anna.
Because he didn’t imprison her as his own laws would have asked for; he didn’t kill her in the rubble to secure his fortress. He sheltered her. He preserved that corner of himself. Legacy (her ways and the world seen through her eyes) represents that piece of humanity in him while the rest of his soul is a butcher’s shop. He wants to trust her judgement even if her actions are breaking his world apart. He chooses to put his faith in her at the cost of himself and at the cost of the world he fights to keep afloat because he trusts her to be the better part of him.
Tumblr media
The story starts with Legacy reminding him of how long they have been fighting for, making him reflect on the meaning of their lives. And by the end of it he comes to terms with how tired he is of that struggle, of surviving just to wake up again and again to the same grey day. So when she exposes the cracks in his fortress he chooses to see the rays of light that are coming through.
Yes, I do love that story - it had so many details written with care and respect.

Hello! 👋 Could you list some of the best comic books that explore the Rogue/ Magneto relationship?
Hey there!!! 👩‍🚀 Oh gosh! With pleasure! I might be a bit rusty because I haven’t gone through older Marvel comic books in a while and also because I am not up to date with the recent years of X-Men comics BUT there are still a couple of issues that are very dear to me when it comes to Rogue & Magneto, so happy to share:
It all started in the year 1981:
1. Uncanny X-Men #269 ; Uncanny X-Men #274 & Uncanny X-Men #275 (1981, Written by Chris Claremont) [The story is pretty self-contained to these 3 issues and it all starts with Rogue realising that her Ms. Marvel powers are gone and Carol Danvers somehow has her own body now. (a very simplified context of what was going on in that era with the X-Men) I absolutely love Rogue in these issues. She has sass and personality, and she still carries a lot of her energy from the 80s.]
Tumblr media
2. X -Men Volume 2 (Issues #1 - #3) - (1991, Chris Claremont) [They meet again after the events in the Savage Land, now on opposite sides.]
Tumblr media
3. Magneto Rex: Issues #1- #3 - (1999, Joe Pruett) [This miniseries… is a bit weird and needs some context. It’s at a time where Marvel really wanted to have Magneto return to his evil ways and be a villain for the X-Men (regardless if it made sense or not). Not one of my favourites and generally can live without but it’s a ‘next stop’ in their interactions, so adding it to the list.]
4. Then we have X-Men Legacy! ( 2008, Mike Carey) [This one is a chonker, and to make things worse it is connected with other series running at the same time. It has pieces of Rogue and Magneto through the entire run but all in all, the story sees them reunite under the same team in Utopia (starting with Legacy #231). The full run of Legacy can be difficult to follow up on but if you have the time, it’s really worth it. It’s also the first story in YEARS where Rogue is allowed to shine and do her own thing. If you need a more detailed list of what issues are really worth reading, in what order and what is happening in between them let me know and will be happy to write down a breakdown!]
Tumblr media
5. Memorable mentions in the main series: There are quite a few tiny bits about them in the comic books but here’s a list of issues that give more context to how they interact and how they feel about each other:
a. Marvel Fanfare #33 - (1982, Chris Claremont. I love Rogue in this one and it’s such a nice example of what a good and powerful duo they can make. Something that is later explored in Legacy as well. b. Legacy #223 (during Rogue’s journey to control her powers) we have a glimpse of how she remembers and sees Magneto’s presence in her life. c. Magneto #10 (2014, Cullen Bunn) - Similarly, a glimpse into Magneto’s mind on how he remembers Rogue and the impact their connection in the Savage Land had on him. d. Mr & Mrs X #6 (2019) - there is a page between Rogue and Magneto where, in all that mess, at least Magneto’s honest feelings for her and his care for her happiness shine through.
And last but not least, Age of Apocalypse. [This is a completely separate timeline that the comic books liked to visit from time to time. In this universe Rogue and Magneto are pretty much in love and married but… it’s a very tragic universe. Original series started in 1995; then it got revisited in 2005 and again in 2015… I think? The series… is far from perfect, there are so many things that can be described as unhinged (dialogue included) but, there is so much love for these two characters and I absolutely recommend it if you are ok with investing some time into reading it, and most of all if you are ready for a real heart break (again and again).]

Hope this helps! Happy to go into more details or put aside a cleaner list if interested! 💜
There are a couple other mentions in the comics so in case I missed something important I will summon one of the gods of endless knowledge when it comes to X-Men to correct or add to the list: @maedelin

Ha ha I absolutely love how my tumblr posts, screenshots and gifs for X Men ‘97 Rogue and Magneto are being set free on twitter and other social media.
I love when people care and are excited and share that joy with others instead of gatekeeping. It’s so damn refreshing. 💛💚💜
Release them into the wild, let them grow beautifully! And the best part… I am not done! Now that the weekend is here and I have a moment to breathe from work, there’s more on the way.
