Caspian’s Soulmate

The next in my anniversary soulmate oneshots. Thanks for sticking around!

The dress that your seamstress had made was gold and beautiful. You twirled in front of the mirror and watched as it swayed around you. There were different jewels that you were supposed to be putting on, a request from your parents, but you were more entranced by the dress.

Would you dance with the king in this dress? Most of these balls that you were dragged to by your parents ended with a few of the ladies dancing with the king. Of course most of the ladies wanted to see if a red line would appear from their hand to their heart, but you knew that finding a soulmate wasn’t guaranteed.

Your parents weren’t soulmates and they believed that the king would be pressured to find a queen before he could find a soulmate. Most of the lords and ladies had paraded their daughters in front of the king at this point in an effort to entice him should a red line not appear at the first touch.

The dress had thin straps about an inch wide rather than sleeves with just a little lace to cover your chest. It was not as scandalous as some of the dresses you had seen the women wearing, but it was less coverage than you were used to.

You did not want to be whored out to the king for fame and prestige, the things most people hunted for. Your own parents were as desperate to get you in front of the king as the rest had been, but you didn’t mind.

It might be pitiful and childish, but you wanted to wait for your soulmate.

Your parents would not be happy if they were aware of that so you kept it to yourself. For their sake, you would dress up and smile pretty. You would dance with the king if it happened.

And then you would go back to dreaming about what your soulmate would be like.

“The king has only danced with one lady tonight,” your mother said into your ear as she fixed your hair. “He has been reserved and difficult to reach. We need to get you in front of him before they decide he is not to dance with anyone else tonight.”

Perhaps he was tired of being whored out as well. The king was a handsome man with a lovely smile, but you knew it had to be exhausting to have a parade of women thrown at him in hopes one of them would entice him.

“Mother, perhaps we should just–”

But your words were swallowed because your father came up and shook his head jerkily.

“The servant I paid said that the king will not be dancing with any ladies he is not already acquainted with. This is unacceptable.”

Unacceptable? That the king wouldn’t want to dance with ladies he had never met before just because the parents wanted to take the chance he might fall in love with one of them within one dance?

With both of your parents pouting at the fact that you would not be meeting the king tonight, you went around the room alone for a while. You knew some of the ladies so you smiled and greeted them, but when all of the conversations strayed back to the king, you politely made your excuses.

The king was handsome. His long hair fell around his face attractively and he smiled at all of the people in the hall. And from the times you had heard him speak, he seemed like an intelligent and caring man. He would be a wonderful catch for any woman, soulmate or not.

That said, you couldn’t understand why people traveled hours just to go to balls where he would be in attendance? Was the idea of being queen that interesting to them?

One of the gentleman in the hall asked you to dance and since neither of your parents were there to chaperone you, you told him yes yourself. On the floor mixed with other couples, you tried to let yourself be guided through the steps and focus on your partner. He was a handsome man as well, but without the heartline appearing, you could not focus on him.

Instead your mind and eyes started to wander. Off to the far side, the king was dancing with one of the ladies you knew he was friendly with. She was married though, so no one was holding their breath to see if this one would sweep him off his feet.

He was good at dancing. He moved her easily, laughing and talking as they twirled. Your dance partner had already stepped on your feet twice although you knew it wasn’t on purpose.

The first song melted into another one and you didn’t have a chance to politely decline before your partner was sweeping you around the room again. You wanted to find a corner to sit in until your parents would tell you it was time to leave, but you refused to be impolite.

Even if your feet hurt.

Your partner had twirled you out and you bumped into the back of someone. You immediately turned to apologize.

“I’m so sorry,” you said as you checked the lady to make sure you hadn’t hurt her, “I think my partner was a little overzealous with our turns.”

The lady laughed, telling you that she was fine. You turned to also address her partner, as was polite, and found yourself face to face with the king. He was smiling kindly, not upset that his dance had been interrupted. And the moment you realized who it was, you bowed low.

“Please, rise,” he said to you and your partner who you had almost forgotten about. “This song is a beautiful one. I wouldn’t want the two of you to miss it.”

You looked at your partner and nearly winced. Your feet ached and you were tired of being spun around in circles. As if the lady had read your mind, she let out a gasp and touched the side of your dress.

“Oh, I think one of my beads snagged a thread on your gown. Here, let me fix that. Your partner will need to come back later to finish the dance.”

Most likely the presence of the king made your partner shy because he bowed and walked off without a word. You giggled and then sagged with relief. The lady laughed as she released your arm.

“I can recognize a lady in need of rescue,” she laughed. Then she sighed and waved at someone off in the distance. “Please excuse me for a moment, my husband seems to have gotten lost again.”

You laughed as she wandered off. And then you realized you were alone with the king.

Stunned, you turned to face him and fought the urge to give another bow. You felt like an idiot just standing there so you cleared your throat.

“I suppose perhaps I should head off the dance floor before someone runs into me,” you said with a smile.

The king looked around the floor for a moment and then looked back at you.

“It really is a beautiful song. How would you like to dance the last of it with me before I return you to your partner?”

He laughed at the face you made at the second part of his offer, but you gave him an honest smile as he held a hand out to you. Your hand slid into his and the two of you started to get into position for the dance.

Except you felt something crawling up your arm. You pulled back a bit to see what it was and found yourself in awe. A red line was creeping up from the palm of your left hand up the inside of your wrist, up your forearm. It went up and over the length of your arm. And from under the lace, you could see it stop and rest over your heart.

The king pushed his own sleeve up to see that yes, he had a matching red line up from his palm.

His eyes met yours and you found yourself breathless. His dark eyes were locked on yours and both of you melted into the scenery. The hall could have burned down and you wouldn’t have noticed.

“I’m Y/N,” you said quickly, giving your name the moment you realized that you hadn’t even introduced yourself yet.

“Caspian,” he offered as he squeezed your hand. “And I believe I’m your soulmate.”

You felt a rush of happiness through your body at the mere words. How did you manage to not only find your soulmate but for it to be the king?

Not the king. No, your soulmate was Caspian.

A whole pile of books and notes hit the wall with a loud crash as you threw them off the table in a rush of helpless anger. It was all too much. Endless pages of notes, long, incomprehensible chapters in books. Scrolls, papers, notes, cheat sheets. Everything to pass that one damn exam. If only that knowledge was valuable, but it was set of nonsensical rules that existed only to keep teachers like yours working. Yet the course was so difficult that many students had been forced to end their studies prematurely. With a heavy sigh, you hid your face in your hands, unable to bring yourself to look at the letters and words any longer. The first tears of helplessness appeared in your eyes. Time was running out and you felt like the whole world had collapsed on your head, pressing you mercilessly to the ground.

Suddenly you heard a soft knock on the door. You wanted to tell this person not to even try to come in. You were angry, annoyed, ready to throw your chair at anyone who dares to come inside your room. "I told you not to come in here!" you screamed, not rising your eyes. You were in no mood to deal with people. However it was too late, the hooded figure stepped inside and looked at you. You lifted your head to see who dared to come in, and immediately met the gaze of golden orbs. "Mentor..." you muttered, feeling another wave of humiliation. Great, the last person you wanted to see right now was Altaïr himself. The man looked around your room, noticing the pile of books, and let out a small sigh. "Getting angry and crying won't help" "Yes, Mentor" "Do you need help?"

Your heart almost stopped at the thought that Altaïr might stay here and help you. But on the other hand ... what would he do? After all, he will not force words and definitions into your head. You didn't want him to see you so desperate.

"No, mentor." "Lying won't help either. Collect your books off the ground, I'll be right back," he only said, leaving your room just as suddenly as he appeared in it. For a moment you wondered if Altaïr was here at all. Maybe it was just a figment of your exhausted mind that decided to kill you. However, whatever it was, you picked up the books from the ground and put them back on the table, trying to find the last page you were reading.

Then the door re-opened. Altaïr had tea with him, which filled the room with the mesmerizing smell of herbs. Besides that he had fruits. He put everything next to your books and came back to close the door. Then he opened the window wide to let fresh air fill the room. With fresh spring air and sunlight, the atmosphere in the room had changed diametrally.

You looked at him speechlessly, not really knowing what to do.

"What are you staring at? Go back to studying."

His voice was as deep and calm as ever, making your heart tremble. Altaïr could convince anyone with his voice to do anything, no matter how stupid it was. A shiver ran down your spine and you immediately sat obediently in your chair, going back to your book and trying to focus. However, feeling the careful gaze of the golden irises that were drilling into your back, you couldn't concentrate. You were sure that bastard was smiling to himself, he knew what he was doing to you! He knew how hard it was to resist him. And then you heard your bed creaking. Insolence! He laid on your bed and made you work? "Haven't you got something to do, mentor?" you asked, a bit gruffly. You were used to his presence, but that didn't make it easier for you to focus.

"I suppose I do. But first I have to hide from Malik. He's in a lousy mood and I don't want any extra work." You could swear that you heard him chuckle.

"And that's why you came to make fun of me when I have to study? And lay on my bed as well?" "I brought tea and fruits, isn't that enough payment for using your bed?"

You sighed, shaking your head, and went back to the book. It was actually kind of fun. Mentor of the Brotherhood, Master Assassin hiding from his friend and his responsibilities.

"What are you actually learning?" he asked after a few minutes of silence. You've read the next page, but not much was left in your head. Your thoughts were occupied by the handsome man who was so close... You turned to look at him and you gasped in surprise. He took off his hood and shoes and was currently lying only in light outwear on your bed with his hands behind his head. He was still looking at you. And there was curiosity in his eyes, and something else ... something you didn't know yet. You told him what you were learning, and he sighed in response. "Show me that book," he said, reaching out his hand. You rolled your eyes. He didn't even feel like getting up to take it himself ?! It wasn't that far! Lazy asshole! But you got up from your seat with the book in your hand and walked over to him, handing it to him. You only managed to see the flash of his smile when instead of a book he grabbed your wrist and pulled you on the bed. One arm was wrapped around your waist so you couldn't escape, the other he kept under his head. "Altaïr!" you screamed in surprise, but you stopped struggling. You couldn't win against him anyway. However, since he was not doing anything obscene, you decided to let him touch you. It's not like you never hugged him. You even had the opportunity to sleep cuddled under one blanket when it was very cold during one mission, "It's comfortable now. Tell me all about what you're learning. One by one." "Why? It's not ...-" "Shh, just tell me. I don't know anything about that, so today you can be my master." "Altaïr's Master? I like that title." you chuckled and you heard his low groan. His hand gently pinched your hip as a warning. He really didn't like being mocked. You took a deep breath and then started telling him everything. Definitions, examples. Altair spoke every now and then, asking you to explain something better, asking questions, sometimes you had the impression that he was actually pointing you to the right answer. His hand was almost motionless all the time around your stomach. When you were halfway through another topic, his hand began to slowly move. Long, warm fingers traced your hip. You felt him shifting position to get closer. Then you felt him pressing against your back, his warm breath puffing against your neck. And that's when you start to quiver, feeling the flush on your cheeks. "You would be a great teacher. And I'm sure you can pass this exam. Just imagine that you are explaining everything to me. I'm sure you will do great," he assured. You squeaked in terror when you felt a light kiss on your neck. You jumped on the bed, surprised, making Altaïr chuckle. But then he slipped the book from your hands. "That is enough for today. I'll come tomorrow so you can explain the rest to me. Now we can have some tea." The man got up, leaving you alone on the bed for a few moments, and you couldn't take your eyes off him. Something was amazing about this sight. Barefoot, unarmed, Altair, serving you tea... He looked so... normal. And you felt like it was a view you could get used to. Just the two of you, leading this simple life. "Thank you, Altair." "You are welcome. You're an exceptional woman. Sometimes everyone needs help. You have saved me more than once so it's only normal for me to repay my debt" "Me? Saved you? From what? You are invincible! Nobody stands a chance against you!" you exclaimed surprised. No one could match Altaïr! Not in this world. He chuckled again as he sat down next to you and put one arm around your waist. His breath wrapped around your naked neck again as he leaned in to whisper in your ear. "You saved me from myself." his lips almost brushed your earlobe "now it's my turn to save you."

Altair had kept his promise. The next day, he reappeared in your room with tea and fruits and listened attentively to you for several hours, then hugged and stroked you. Every day he told you how amazing you are. How strong, independent, beautiful. And after your session of cuddling, he even started to tell you his own stories. Little misadventures from young years of his and Malik. And then? Then was the day of an exam and you nailed it. You imagined yourself explaining everything to him, just like all those days before. And Altaïr? He was waiting for you with tea to celebrate your victory. The reward for that was the kiss you desired since the very first day he appeared in your room. Delicate. Sensitive. A prelude to hundreds of kisses that you will share together for the rest of your lives.

Niall Horan is 24 years old, has 40 million Twitter followers, and a highly-ranked debut album. In addition, he has a sold out show tomorrow at Luna Park. This is easy to explain: the singer was part of One Direction, the biggest boy band in the world up until their indefinite hiatus in 2015. The band took its pass at Vélez Stadium in its golden years, but now Horan, who was never the charismatic starlet (Harry Styles), nor the most acclaimed voice (Zayn Malik), nor the diplomatic spokesperson (Liam Payne), comes to take on Buenos Aires solo.

In 2010, the Irishman born in Mullingar went to try his luck at an audition for the reality show The X Factor. The judges couldn’t agree, but they let him pass through a pair of rounds until they decided he wasn’t good enough to continue as a solo artist, but he had the potential to form part of what then became 1D, the grand hit from music producer Simon Cowell.

Although he passed through the end of his adolescence unable to sleep for the screams from the girls camped outside his hotel and surrounded by bodyguards, Niall spent his five years in the band hidden behind his guitar. The members of One Direction always spoke of ‘a democracy’, but for Niall, the majority of times, it was left to him sing the harmonies for his bandmates with stronger voices. Even the Directioners reached the point of making #LetNiallSing a trending topic. Now without a doubt it’s his turn, and he knows how he wants to do things.

This became clear last October when Flicker, his first album, went straight to the number one spot on the charts, making One Direction the only band since The Beatles to have three members with number one solo albums (completing the successful trifecta Harry Styles with his eponymous album and Zayn with Mind of Mine). The success of the album shouldn’t have been a surprise: his singles This Town, Too Much To Ask, and Slow Hands had already climbed high in the rankings, but in addition had made it clear the path Niall had chosen. Since the first cuts, the ex boy bander had proven himself assured and well planted in folk-pop, where he could position himself as more attractive, more playful, and less grating than Ed Sheeran. Despite setting himself apart from his ex bandmates by selecting this genre, it’s Niall who has stayed closest to the sound of the band. At least with the smooth ballads of heartbreak, he draws on his long-held reputation for sweetness and likability. His new style of music reinforces the sensation that if you could run into any member of One Direction at a bar and fall in love, Niall is the one.

What to expect this Friday from his Luna Park show? Certainly a show with the professionalism of someone who grew up filling stadiums, and the enthusiasm of someone who wants to show he is now on top of the world. In this second date of the Latin American leg of Flicker World Tour (kicked off last Wednesday in the Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile), it’s likely he’ll play the 13 songs from his album, plus Fool’s Gold from 1D, plus two very dissimilar covers: Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen and Crying in the Club by Camila Cabello. In addition the country singer Maren Morris will open the show and accompany him on the duet Seeing Blind.

Niall is no longer one of “the background guys” in One Direction. Now he has claimed his place by finding an opening between pop and folk music, and he has discovered that place is his alone.
