You’re going on a journey. A journey through memory. The destination? A place and time you’ve been before. The time? When movies knew to let Hugh Jackman be a romantic lead and not just get his shirt off because he was a superhero putting his adamantium claws through someone’s torso but actually giving him a chance to be a romantic lead and sex object.
He wasn’t actually a romantic lead in SWORDFISH (though he did get knobbed off). I just love this picture of  he and his SWORDFISH costar Halle Berry.
Tumblr media
He was a romantic lead in AUSTRALIA, though.
Tumblr media
Thankfully the place to revisit Jackman’s romantic leading man past is Lisa Joy’s  REMINISCENCE, currently in theaters and HBO Max.
Tumblr media
REMINISCENCE marks the feature film writing and directing debut of Joy who wrote for ABC’s PUSHING DAISIES, USA’s BURN NOTICE and is currently writing for HBO’s WESTWORLD which she co-created and co-produces with her husband Jonathan Nolan.
Tumblr media
Unlike WESTWORLD,  REMINISCENCE is mercifully uncomplicated, less confusing and less confounding.
With the concept of using technology to access people’s memories, it’s easy to compare the film to Joy’s brother-in-law Christopher Nolan’s film INCEPTION. However, REMINISCENCE is more in line with James Cameron and James Cocks’ STRANGE DAYS, directed by Kathryn Bigelow. In that film Ralph Fiennes plays a former cop who peddles discs with people’s memories so that other people can experience it through virtual reality. A vice he feeds into to revisit his past with this ex-girlfriend.  Angela Bassett plays his friend and moral compass.
In REMINISCENCE Jackman plays Nick, a former vet who is now a dream merchant. The present - a time where climate change has flooded cities, including Miami where everyone has to travel by boats and tread on waterlogged streets,
Tumblr media
while the rich - the new land barons - have taken control of dry land. With a bleak present and no future to look forward to, people pay Nick and his business partner/friend Watts (Thandiwe Newton (the film marks the first time Thandie is credited using her birth name)  to use a device to access their favorite memories.
Tumblr media
Enter Mae (Rebecca Ferguson), a picture of  classic Hollywood femme fatale if there ever was one.  Mae, a chanteuse, goes to Nick for his services and before long the two end up an item.
Tumblr media
But when Mae disappears Nick goes on an obsessive mission to find her delving into both his memories and her past.
Tumblr media
NO SPOILERS
Love the world building that Joy did which is so simple but inventive. In keeping with the idea that there has been a monumental change in the climate, society is now largely nocturnal with people coming out at night and inside during the day because it is too hot. So instead of classic noir films that are always cloaked in the dark, this is in the light.
Tumblr media
Jackman and Ferguson, who already worked together in THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, proves once again they’re a great pairing.
Tumblr media
And unlike THE GREATEST SHOWMAN where Rebecca Ferguson didn’t actually sing, she lends several songs to the REMINISCENCE soundtrack including a brief cover of Cigarettes after Sex’s “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby”.
youtube
Thandiwe Newton isn’t the only WESTWORLD cast member in the film. Angela Sarafayan who plays Clementine has a small role
Tumblr media
and the score was composed by show’s composer Ramin Djawadi.
The film also stars Daniel Wu (INTO THE BADLANDS), Cliff Curtis (FEAR OF THE WALKING DEAD) and Natalie Martinez (The I-LAND).
Also in a small role is Newton and director Ol Parker’s (MAMMA MIA 1 and 2, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL) 16-year old daughter Nico Parker.
Tumblr media
Nico followed her mum to HBO as she stars along Pedro Pascal in HBO’s THE LAST OF US series adaptation.
Tumblr media
-You can see Rebecca Ferguson again on HBO Max when DUNE is released in October.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And she will be seen in her third outing of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE when MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 7 is released.
Team Impossible Mission Force with director Christopher McQuarrie and assistant director Mary Boulding.
Tumblr media
She reunited with her MI work husband Simon Pegg at a recent REMINISCENCE screening.

Meet the Civil Rights Leaders Who Served on Planned Parenthood’s 1942 Advisory Council
The National Negro Advisory Council of Planned Parenthood Federation of America formed in 1942 to lead educational and outreach efforts in Black communities. Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee, Mabel Keaton Staupers, and Dr. Paul B. Cornely were just three of more than 100 Black leaders and health care providers who joined the initiative, along with W.E.B. Dubois and Mary McLeod Bethune. This Black History Month, we honor Black leaders of the past who fought for the lives, dignity, and future of black communities in the US.

Dr. Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee (1898-1980) was an obstetrician and civil rights activist who was the first medical director of the Mississippi Health Project, working to administer health care to thousands of Black Mississippians during Jim Crow. Later, she became president of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, president of the National Council of Negro Women, and a vice president of Girl Scouts of the United States of America.

Dr. Paul B. Cornely (1906-2002) was a physician and civil rights leader who fought for desegregation in hospitals and became first Black president of the American Public Health Association (APHA) in 1969.

Mabel Keaton Staupers (1890-1989) (center) was a nurse who helped establish the Booker T. Washington Sanitarium, a Harlem-based health care facility that was the first to treat Black tuberculosis patients. Later, she fought against quotas that limited the number of black nurses allowed in the military during World War II.

Day 540
Saturday 24thJuly 2021
Rain again today for our weekend, but regardless of the rain, we had a good day. It started off with a tea in bed while benoit and I finished off our movie we started last night, The dig. A film based on the discovery of one of the oldest algo-saxo burial sites found. It was a good film. Then we had a early lunch while we watched some of the Olympics before we headed out for the day. Benoit and I decided to go for a walk before heading to the climbing gym. Although it was raining, it wasn’t too hard and we managed to make the most of it. We headed to Banneaux, a place near home where apparently the virgin mary made an appearance, so it is a very religious place, a lot of small areas of worship all around the place, and so many places where you can buy little figurines. But honestly it was stunning, so many old churches hidden in the woods. After a short 7km walk we headed to the boulding gym for a quick climb. It is good to get back to the climbing gym as it has been a while, as I have missed it! To make the most of our time in liege we decided to try out a little café that looked neat, the theme was alice in wonderland, they served tea and scones and offered a whole range of board games to play. Honestly it was super cute and a fun way to end the afternoon. Once we headed home, we helped out with getting dinner ready as Joelle invited her brothers and sister over for dinner. A big lively group, but a good night! And delicious food. For dinner we had a delicious duck lasagana and dessert melon and peach marinated in honey, lime and mint and then quickly cooked in the pan, it was delicious!
Love Kate xxx
One: being able to chat about everything with Benoit, its good to always have a sounding board Two: café dates, it was such a treat Three: seeing all the family, a big group, but a good one

Black Nurses of WWI
Tumblr media
 Black Nurses of WWI
Aileen Cole, Clara Rollins, and Susie Boulding along with 15 other women of color became the first American Black nurses to officially join the war effort in WWI. They had faced rejection and discrimination from both the military and the Red Cross but as the death toll of the 1918 Flu Pandemic and WWI mounted, the color barrier was finally broken because of the shortage of skilled nurses.
There had been about 181 documented Black nurses, both men and women, during the Civil War, including Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman. There were Black nurses in hospitals and as private care nurses such as Mary Mahoney (WCW 39) -- the first Black woman to attend nursing school. However in 1911, the Red Cross officially banned the recruiting of Black nurses. Since the military took their nurses from the Red Cross, the military opportunity was automatically closed to them. However, Black male doctors and dentists were allowed to join the military.
In 1918, Robert Moton, President of the Tuskegee Institute, repudiated the Red Cross condemning the “indifference on the part of colored people which ought not to be when the country needs every ounce of effort along every available line”.
The 18 Black nurses still had “separate but equal” living quarters but overall were treated as part of the medical team and valued by their patients. Aileen Cole wrote of her experience: “The story of the Negro woman in World War I is not spectacular. We arrived after the Armistice was signed, which alone was anticlimactic. We had no opportunity for ‘service above and beyond the call of duty.’ But each one of us, in the course of our professional relationships, did contribute quietly and with dignity to the idea that justice demands professional equality for all qualified nurses.”

Compared to the high summer of E Bould’s 1852 sampler, the simplicity of Marie Wills’ sampler (dated 1800) feels like the bare branches of winter or very early spring. The flowers with their prominent stamens remind me of an early-flowering clematis...and yet if the original colours were brilliant pinks and vivid greens, would I think more of July than January? 🌸🐝 #sampler #antiquesamplers #samplerstitchersofinstagram #crossstitch #bluecoppice #samplers #wightwickmanor #nineteethcentury @nationaltrust @wightwickmanornt (at Wightwick Manor & Gardens) https://www.instagram.com/p/B76rH71JRrT/?igshid=1exnuqgm5lntm

On This Day In TCXPI History The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was founded on December 5, 1935, with the support of the leaders of 28 of the most notable Black women's organizations. The Founder and President until 1949, Mary McLeod Bethune, envisioned a unified force of black women's groups fighting to improve racial conditions nationally and internationally. The NCNW focused on gathering information, making credible contacts, and sponsoring educations programs. The most notable effort in the 1930s was the 1938 White House Conference on Governmental Cooperation in the Approach to the Problems of Negro Women and Children. Beginning with this conference, representatives of the NCNW began to regularly visit the White House to call for more black female administrators in upper-level government positions. In the 1940s the NCNW engaged in a series of activities including the campaign to desegregate the armed forces and assisting women globally during War World II. In 1941, the NCNW became a member of the U.S. War Department's Bureau of Public Relations under the Women's Interest Section where they lobbied for black women in the U.S. Army. By 1942, The Women's Army Corps (WAC) accepted African American women, admitting them into the service overseas in the 688th Central Postal Battalion. They also launched education campaigns, urging black workers to improve their job skills and to maintain professional attitudes and appearances. In its concern for minority women around the world, the NCNW advocated U.S. participation in the United Nations. In 1949, Mary McLeod Bethune was succeeded by Dorothy Boulding Ferebee who refocused the group's efforts toward using the legal system to gain black rights and promote voter registration and education. The NCNW also lobbied for women's rights legislation, federal aid to education, establishment of a national health-care system, and a permanent Fair Employment Practices Commission (FEPC) to prevent racial discrimination in employment. In 1953, Vivian Carter Mason was elected president. Mason centralized the structure of the NCNW and was successful in making local councils adhere to NCNW guidelines.

Meet woman who uses healing power of spa to help dementia sufferers
By the time Sarah Tester’s mother was diagnosed with vascular dementia, she had started to forget her grown-up daughter’s face.
Instead, she inhabited the world as it was 40 years ago, when Sarah was a toddler.
‘Sometimes she’d talk to me and tell me about myself, having no idea that I was sitting there with her. She’d say: “I’m having real trouble with my little girl at the moment because she’s not sleeping.” ’
For Sarah, one of the saddest parts of her mother’s decline was that she — the daughter who did most of the caring — was the person most frequently forgotten.
Sue Davies, pictured, is wellness director at Lifehouse Spa & Hotel near Frinton in Essex which is the UK’s first ‘Dementia Spa’ where therapists have been trained to work with sufferers
‘Mum tended to remember other family members but not me. I was probably the closest to her out of the whole family, and the one who looked after her, but I was the one she didn’t know. I know she couldn’t help it — she was living in a different era — but it was hurtful.’
There was one thing Sarah and her mother did together, however, that never failed to put them both in a better mood, often for days at a time.
A gentle walk around the spa where Sarah worked, sometimes with a hand massage and a spell sitting in the sunshine in the glorious grounds, seemed to calm her mother’s anxiety and distract her from repetitive behaviour.
‘She loved to be taken to the spa,’ said Sarah. ‘Most of all, she liked sitting in the gardens, which are English Heritage-listed and very beautiful. But it was the atmosphere, too, the calm of it all. Her symptoms definitely improved when we were there.’
It made Sarah aware for the first time of the potential of spa treatments to help people with dementia.
Eventually it would lead, in part, to a whole new direction at the upmarket Lifehouse Spa & Hotel in Thorpe-le-Soken, near Frinton in Essex, where she is now finance director.
A pretty seaside town where 45 per cent of the population are retired, Frinton is precisely the kind of place to be most affected by the rising number of people living with dementia.
Therapists at the spa, pictured Sue outside the building, have been trained by the Alzheimer’s Society to recognise symptoms and become ‘Dementia Friends’
Although dementia rates are falling — by 15 per cent every ten years since 1988 according to research — 850,000 people have the condition in the UK according to the Alzheimer’s Society.
At the Lifehouse, it wasn’t just Sarah who was caring for an affected relative. Several other staff members had similar experiences, including the former director of the spa, whose father was ill.
They knew what eased their loved ones’ symptoms, but they’d also witnessed the stigma attached to the condition.
How common is dementia?
Some 225,000 people will develop dementia this year — that’s one every three minutes
‘Out in public, at shops or restaurants, people with dementia are often seen as a nuisance or in the way,’ says Sue Davies, wellness director at the spa.
‘People have no patience for them. They tut if they’re slow, or even get cross. There certainly seemed to be very little empathy in public places for Mum,’ agrees Sarah.
‘Having said that, if you don’t have experience of it, the behaviour can seem really difficult. Mum would have a drink for example, put down the empty cup, and immediately say: “Can I have a drink? I’m thirsty.”
‘You’d say: “But Mum, you’ve just had one.” But she’d keep on asking and this could go on for two or three hours. The point is, it’s much easier to stay patient if you understand the condition.’
It was in that spirit of awareness-raising that the spa called in the Alzheimer’s Society to train therapists to recognise symptoms and become ‘Dementia Friends’.
The spa’s finance director Sarah Tester said a walk around the grounds, pictured, would help lift her and her mother’s mood
Sue began to devise packages of treatments for people with dementia — and last year the Lifehouse was named the first ‘Dementia Spa’ in the UK, a title that owes much to the passionate advocacy of its staff.
‘We wanted to create a haven,’ says Sue. ‘We have packages for burned-out City workers up from London, and for all sorts of other guests who might want to detox, go on a juice diet or get over divorce. Why shouldn’t people with dementia get pampered in the same way?’
Guests notice the difference from the start of their visit to the ultra-modern spa, on the former site of Thorpe Hall where Lord and Lady Byng once entertained Winston Churchill, Queen Mary and Rudyard Kipling.
What is dementia?
A global concern
Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of progressive neurological disorders, that is, conditions affecting the brain.
There are many different types of dementia, of which Alzheimer’s disease is the most common.
Some people may have a combination of types of dementia.
Regardless of which type is diagnosed, each person will experience their dementia in their own unique way.
Dementia is a global concern but it is most often seen in wealthier countries, where people are likely to live into very old age.
How many people are affected?
Alzheimer’s Research UK reports there are more than 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK today.
It is estimated that the number of people living with dementia in the UK by 2025 will rise to over 1 million.
In the US, it’s estimated there are 5.5 million sufferers. A similar percentage rise is expected in the coming years.
As a person’s age increases, so does the risk of them developing dementia.
Rates of diagnosis are improving but many people with dementia are thought to still be undiagnosed.
Is there a cure?
Currently there is no cure for dementia but new drugs can slow down its progression and the earlier it is spotted the more effective treatments are.

‘We don’t book in someone with dementia at the main reception because it’s busy and it’s disorienting,’ says Sue. ‘The ringing phones can confuse people. So we take them into a private office instead where it’s much quieter.’
You also won’t find black rugs or carpet at the Lifehouse, since certain types of dementia can affect the ability to judge depth, making black rugs look like holes in the floor.
People with dementia are given more time, not only for individual treatments, but to plan their day and choose meals, too.
Therapists are also trained to understand that sometimes those with dementia have heightened emotions and might be more sensitive to treatments.
‘Realistically, we don’t see many people with very advanced dementia because those people are likely to find a new environment very difficult,’ says Sue. ‘But even those at the beginning of the disease can lose emotional filters and cry more easily. Our therapists understand that.’
She adds: ‘We then spend lots of time talking to the person with dementia and their carer about the treatments they’d like.
‘A full body massage might be too much, for example, so we’d offer a very gentle hand and foot massage with a blend of essential oils, with the person sitting in a chair rather than lying down.’
‘We might do a Reiki healing session, if they’re open to it. Or singing bowl meditation with bowls made of precious stones that resonate with different areas of the body, which is also very calming.
‘All these things will relax you, but they’re pampering too.’
A spa day might seem like a trivial response to a serious, disabling disease (and cynics will scoff at singing bowls). But there are undoubtedly real benefits, backed by expert research.
Last year a study in the Journal of Clinical Nursing, for example, reported that aromatherapy can help people manage some dementia symptoms, and suggested certain oils could improve memory and thinking skills in people with Alzheimer’s.
Lemon balm specifically has been shown to help with mood swings and lavender oil with aggressive behaviour sometimes associated with the condition.

Mindfulness is especially useful to people starting to worry about problems with memory, as is the emphasis on calm breathing in yoga and Tai Chi. Studies on the benefits of massage, meanwhile, have shown positive effects on anxiety, agitation and depression.
But perhaps most significant of all is the simple act of prioritising the person over the dementia.
Study after study suggests people with dementia do better if their feelings are valued and they’re helped to carry on experiencing life to the full for as long as possible.
A relaxed mood is likely to last, too. ‘Short-term memory loss is the best known symptom of the condition, but in many people mood and emotion don’t disappear as quickly,’ says Alzheimer’s Society project manger Emma Bould.
‘A person with dementia might well forget what they’ve done at the spa quite quickly or even that they’ve been at all, but how they feel emotionally will stay with them, potentially for the rest of the week.
‘If they feel valued and relaxed, having had someone really focus on them to make them feel good, then that positive mood can hang around.’

For every person with dementia, there’s almost always a carer like Sarah, often struggling with the emotional toll it takes. For them, the Lifehouse also aims to provide a sanctuary.
Chris Brett, for example, is the chief carer to her father, 87, who nowadays needs help with cooking and personal care. For Chris, it’s meant cutting back her paid work in supermarket merchandising.
‘He was always a big family man,’ she says. ‘There were six of us children, and we all had a dog each. Can you imagine six kids and six dogs running around? But he didn’t mind the noise or the chaos.
‘Nowadays, I’m never quite sure if he’ll remember me or not. Sometimes he will, and we have a really good day and it feels like I’ve got Dad back. Other times, I walk in and he says: “Who are you?” I make a joke of it, and he then says: “Funny, you’ve got a laugh just like my daughter.”
‘It’s hard work, and sometimes I do struggle.’
The spa aims to provide a ‘sanctuary’ for carers who might be struggling with the emotional toll of looking after a loved one. Pictured is the spa’s pool in the dark
When they can afford it, the family sends Chris’s dad into a specialist home for a few weeks’ respite care and that’s when Chris gets her time at the Lifehouse, where ‘it feels just like I’m on holiday’.
‘I could be hundreds of miles away, not just up the road from my house,’ she laughs. ‘I can relax there. I do an aqua class or just talk to other women my own age — we’re all in the same boat — and can stop constantly worrying about Dad. My husband says it’s like I’m a different person when I come back.’
Spa visits don’t come cheap, of course. At the Lifehouse, a basic day costs from £80, with massages starting at £65 and a facial another £75.
For Chris, it’s an occasional but ‘lovely treat to look forward to’.
It was always a treat for Sarah Tester’s mother, too. Sadly, she died in October 2016, aged 75, leaving her daughter determined to help others with the disease.
‘She was aware of her memory going for quite a long time, and she used to get frustrated and depressed by it,’ says Sarah.
‘It was important to do things that took her out of herself and stopped the anxiety. A day dedicated to calm, to nature and to feeling well was absolutely brilliant for that.’
