“And you’re sure about this guy?” said McCree.

“For the 23rd time, yes,” said Hanzo, irritated as the door slid open to Athena’s secondary terminal near the Watchpoint training area.

“Agents, you must understand I’m diverting  much of my processing power towards logistics with Winston and Lynx Seventeen,” said Athena as soon as they walked in.

“We know, Athena,” said McCree, pulling out the swivel chair and allowing Hanzo to sit down, “But you’re still able to run the comms systems, right?”

“Of course,” said Athena.

“I’m going to need you to open a new comm channel,” said Hanzo, tapping away at Athena’s keyboard, “Identification numerals 11--”

“You do not yet have clearance to open new comm channels,” Athena said automatically and Hanzo’s brow furrowed. He looked at McCree.

“I think we should think about--” McCree started but Genji stepped forward.

“Agent override,” said Genji, “Vocal confirmation: Shimada, Genji. Granting temporary overrides to probationary agent Shimada Hanzo to open new comm channels.”

“Override recognized,” said Athena, “Probationary Agent Shimada Hanzo?”

Hanzo drew in a steady breath and began typing at the keyboard again, “Identification numerals 111801110514.”

“Identification numerals accepted,” said Athena, “Would you like me to hail?”

“Yes,” said Hanzo.

“Comm or Vid-Com?” said Athena.

“...Vid-Com is available?” said Hanzo.

“Yes,” said Athena.

“Vid-Com,” said Hanzo.

“What difference does it make?” said McCree.

“We should,” Hanzo cleared his throat, “We should have visual clarification.”

McCree’s brow crinkled with skepticism but Genji just leaned forward and pressed a key on Athena’s keyboard.

“Hailing Comm ID 111801110514,” said Athena.

“Genji!” McCree said with irritation, “We need to think this through!”

“Angela doesn’t have time for us to ‘think this through!’” Genji snapped back.

“Connecting,” said Athena, “Connecting...”

Athena’s screen blipped to a blurred environment and several chimes sounded.

“Hailing,” said Athena, “Hailing.”

Something muttered and distorted sounded over Athena’s speakers and the screen unblurred to reveal a man in dim light in what appeared to be the bridge of a luxury yacht. A handsome man plopped into the captain’s seat, clearly exhausted and rubbing his eyes.

“This is Josué Dosou--head of staff for Vernand Sainclair’s yacht crew, currently reporting from The Sainclair...Vernand is not available at the mom--”

“Baptiste?” said Hanzo.

“Hanzo?” Baptiste’s eyes suddenly lit up and he slapped his hands on the dashboard of the yacht, “Hanzo! It is you!” His eyes instantly flicked to McCree and Genji on either side of Hanzo. “...is it safe to talk? Who are your friends?”

Hanzo cleared his throat, motioning to both McCree and Genji as he spoke. “Baptiste, this is Jesse McCree of Overwatch, and my brother, Genji.”

“Genji!?” a smile split across Baptiste’s face, “I’ve heard so much about you!” Baptiste seemed to catch himself and his eyes flicked to Hanzo briefly before flicking back to Genji, “Good things!” Baptiste saw fit to clarify.

McCree and Genji exchanged glances as Hanzo cleared his throat.

“As much as I would like this to just be a call to catch up, my friend, I’m afraid I’m contacting you regarding a very serious matter,” said Hanzo.

“Well, I did say if you ever needed a helping hand...” Baptiste started and a quiet smile crossed Hanzo’s face. McCree looked from Baptiste on the screen, to Hanzo, back to Baptiste, back to Hanzo, then finally to Genji. Upon making eye contact, Genji just shrugged.

“An ally of ours,” Hanzo continued, “Angela Ziegler, has been captured by Talon.”

Baptiste’s face suddenly dropped from its jovial expression. “Talon took Doctor Ziegler?” he repeated quietly.

“It’s of utmost importance that we get her back as quickly as possible,” said Genji, leaning into the call.

“No-no--I mean, yes, I understand completely,” said Baptiste, “If Doctor Ziegler has been taken, that means---” A bell could be heard ringing and Baptiste suddenly sprang to his feet, “Excuse me one moment,” he said, getting up and rushing offscreen. The ringing sound stopped and Baptiste could be heard grunting in the background.

“Baptiste?” said Hanzo, leaning into Athena’s microphone. There was only grunting on the other side. Hanzo cleared his throat and dropped his voice slightly, leaning into the microphone again, “Jean?” he said.

“I can hear you! I’m still listening!” Baptiste yelled from offscreen.

“Is... everything all right?” said Hanzo.

“Everything’s fine! Keep going about Doctor Ziegler!” Baptiste yelled from offscreen.

Genji cleared his throat. “Doctor Ziegler had been spending the past three days at a medical conference in Malta. About 5 hours ago, she was taken from the bar at the Hotel Eupheme. We don’t have any audio, but we do have video.” Genji hit a few keys on Athena’s keyboard and sent over the silent footage of Mercy and an enormous man with a white streak in his massive mane of black hair at a hotel bar.

“Give me a second!” Baptiste called again from offscreen.

“I’ll just... set it on ‘replay’ said Genji, tapping a few more things onto Athena’s keyboard.

“...loving this contact so far,” said McCree flatly.

“He’s an ally you’d want on your side,” said Hanzo, giving a sharp look to McCree.

“Sure. Ex-Talon. I’m itching for it,” said McCree with an eye-roll.

“Ahh... sorry about that,” said Baptiste, coming back into the view of the screen, a large dentex under one arm, still flapping slightly.

“Is that--” McCree stammered, “Were you just fishing?!”

“Man cannot live on Sainclair’s mini-bar alone, my friend,” said Baptiste, pulling a cooler out from beneath the yacht’s dashboard and stuffing the fish into it, “But now that I have the next few nights’ dinner secured, I’m more than happy to help with--Mauga!?” his eyes practically bulged and he looked back at Hanzo as if the video footage Genji had sent him couldn’t be real.

“So it is Mauga,” said Hanzo, thoughtfully, “I thought he matched your descriptions of him, but---”

“Wait, you know this guy’s name?!” said McCree, looking at Hanzo.

“I wasn’t sure,” said Hanzo, swiveling his chair in McCree’s direction, “And furthermore, I only had audio on your meeting with Jack. This is the first I’m seeing of him as well.”

“Oh I’m so sorry you couldn’t bug our conference room better,” said McCree with an eye roll before turning back to Baptiste on the screen, “So who the hell’s Mogwai?”

“Mogwai is a band. Or a gremlin. Mauga is an old coworker,” said Baptiste, “Really not someone you want to mess with.”

“Really? I thought he looked like 7 feet and three inches of fun,” McCree muttered under his breath.

Baptiste stared at the screen, apparently studying the replaying footage of Mercy leaving with Mauga. “Talon had to have had the hotel locked down,” Baptiste said, apparently mostly to himself, “Mauga knows how to throw his weight around, but from my own experiences with Doctor Ziegler, not even he could get her to a second location just through intimidation. A lockdown of that level couldn’t be Talon’s long-distance drop teams. It would have to be local--they probably only took her to a facility a few hours away.”

“You worked with Ang--with Doctor Ziegler?” said Genji.

“Only for about a week, in Venezuela. She leaves an impression though,” said Baptiste.

“You worked with Mercy and Talon?” said McCree, leaning into the screen.

“McCree,” Hanzo hissed under his breath indignantly, but McCree kept up his glare at Baptiste.

“I had defected from Talon well before meeting Doctor Ziegler,” said Baptiste, “But as I was saying, the facility they took her to would likely still be in the mediterranean--You said she was taken from Malta, right? And if they didn’t knock her out, that means they needed her medical know-how, rather than just striking a blow to Overwatch, which means they’ll be keeping her at a Talon facility with well-equipped labs. My money’s on Venice--highest possible security with all the administration there.”

Genji gave a somewhat impressed look over to McCree but McCree just shook his head. “We already knew that,” said McCree, leaning into the screen, “How can you help?”

“Aside from pretty much having all Talon attack strategies and logistics memorized?” said Baptiste, leaning back in his seat, “I’m a full-fledged combat medic and on top of that, a pretty good shot. And I want Doctor Ziegler safe just as much as you do. For what it’s worth... I really wanted to join Overwatch when I was a kid.”

“If you can help us---” Genji started.

“Hold up hold up hold up,” said McCree, before looking at the Shimada brothers, “Sidebar?”

“Baptiste, I apologize---” Hanzo started.

“No, no, it’s fine,” said Baptiste with a wave.

“Athena, mute audio,” said McCree and a small crossed out mic icon appeared in the corner of their screen.

“We’re rushing into this way too fast,” said McCree.

“I assure you, no one wants to take down Talon more than Baptiste,” said Hanzo.

“And how do you know that, exactly?” said McCree, “And if Genji hadn’t rushed in, I would have asked this question earlier, but how the hell do you have this contact?”

Hanzo’s lips thinned thoughtfully and he cleared his throat. “Technically we had known each other only briefly while he was still in Talon,” said Hanzo.

“...I’m sorry, what?” said McCree.

“It--it was negligible,” said Hanzo, “A few words exchanged. Little more. I knew he was a good man back then--even if at the time our father decided against an alliance with Talon.”

Genji’s visor suddenly brightened. “I thought he looked familiar!” said Genji, excitedly, “The estate security had to practically drag you off--”

Hanzo cleared his throat sharply and Genji gave a short glance to McCree and a nervous chuckle. “I--mean---” Genji just looked at Hanzo, “Go on.”

One corner of McCree’s mouth twisted up in a grimace. At this point, he was used to drawn out and dramatic stories where Hanzo was involved, but now he had a pretty strong idea of where the story was going.

“We wouldn’t meet again until a few years later,” said Hanzo, “It was shortly after Genji confronted me at Hanamura castle and said we must take a side. I am not proud to say I decided to flee as far from Hanamura as I could. I decided to run from the decision. And in my flight I found myself in the Caribbean, and then...I met Baptiste... again. Through a whole... mess of circumstances, we found ourselves fighting against a Talon incursion in San Pedro de Macoris. He is---His fighting style is unparalleled.”

They fucked, the thought came to McCree as a knee-jerk reaction but it was all he could do to stuff it down and fold his arms. Hanzo was withholding too many details, too many exchanges between himself and Baptiste for that not to be the case. But he didn’t care--at least he told himself that--and anyway if Hanzo was emotionally compromised that just undermined Baptiste’s whole presence in this mess, didn’t it? 

“Well that’s a vote of confidence,” said Genji, looking at McCree, but McCree was now avoiding eye contact with both of them, itching beneath the brim of his hat.

“...I don’t believe I would be here without Baptiste,” said Hanzo, “I knew there were two sides, that conflict was unavoidable, but my time with Baptiste showed me that I could not flee in grief forever. That eventually... I would have to take action.” Hanzo drew in a steady breath, “I know I do not have your trust. But I would have you trust Baptiste before you trusted me. That is his strength of character.” 

“I trust you,” said Genji, putting a hand on Hanzo’s shoulder.

“He killed you,” said McCree, flatly.

“I trust you,” Genji said insistently, giving Hanzo’s shoulder a squeeze.

“Genji, you don’t trust him, you’re just terrified of losing the Doc,” said McCree.

“I can do both,” said Genji, his shoulders bunching up.

McCree huffed.

“It’s a two to one vote,” said Genji.

“Hanzo’s status is probationary. It’s one to one. And if I bring Ana in here you can bet we’ll actually be involving the vetting process for this Baptiste guy.”

“I thought you believed in redemption!” Genji snapped.

“I do!” McCree said on reflex.

“Then why is it so hard to believe Baptiste might share our cause? That Baptiste might want to help Angela?” said Genji.

“I--It’s--I--” McCree tried not to look at Hanzo as he stammered. He inhaled sharply through his teeth. “Fine! Fine! Let’s bring in Ex-Talon-Look-At-My-Fish guy! Don’t come crying to me when it blows up in our faces!”

“I assure you, you’re making the right decision,” said Hanzo.

“Yeah,” said McCree, not making eye contact with Hanzo, “Yeah let’s hope so.” He looked back at Hanzo and Genji. “So... unmute?”

Hanzo and Genji gave a simultaneous nod and McCree said, “Athena, unmute.”

The crossed out mic icon in the left corner of the screen disappeared.

“Baptiste, you still there?” said McCree.

Baptiste glanced up, slightly startled and in the midst of cleaning the dentrex he had caught and pouring the guts into his bait bucket. “Hm? Oh-” He nearly fumbled with the fish, then smacked it against the bait bucket a few more times before throwing the fish into the cooler again and setting the bait bucket aside. “Yes. Yes, I’m listening.”

“What are your current coordinates?”

“I can calculate that, with his permission or your override,” said Athena.

“That’s really not--” Baptiste started.

“35°34'24.8″ North, 15°52'07.8″ West,” said Athena, projecting the map on a picture in picture.

“...you’re in sneezing distance of Gibraltar,” said McCree.

“You mean this stupid party boat actually made it across the Atlantic?” said Baptiste incredulously.

“With Agent Vaswani’s help, we are theoretically capable of opening up a teleporter at his coordinates without compromising our satellites,” said Athena.

“Huh,” said McCree, before looking back at Baptiste, “You said you wanted to join Overwatch, right?”

“Yes...” said Baptiste, hesitantly

“So how soon is good for you?”

“Well that depends---”

“Five minutes enough?”

“What?” said Baptiste.

Gency Week 2018, Day 3: Mistletoe

Overwatch, as an organization, did not exactly hold a unified "winter holiday festival”. Not only was the organization made up of a diverse group of people from a wide variety of regions and religions, some of whom did not celebrate December holidays (or, in the case of the residents of the Southern Hemisphere, didn’t even have winter in December), but the widespread structure didn’t make a single gala or party feasible. Add in the around-the-clock nature of most of the organization’s work, and all the ingredients were in place for a half-assed “holiday celebration” where a variety of icons, from Christmas trees to menorahs to Kwanzaa Kinaras and Shinto Kadomatsu decorated the hallways, front doors, walls, floors and ceilings in Overwatch bases around the world.

Genji Shimada, in particular, did not care for these added distractions. He still practiced the Shinto New Year traditions, but as an acting member of Blackwatch he didn’t have the time or reputation to spend on elaborate celebrations. His black-and-red circuitry and exposed chest gave off an aura of brutality that he was happy to exploit to be left alone in his search for solitude and places to focus his rage and frustration. By fermenting these powerful, violent impulses inside himself, he was able to intensify his energy whenever he was next needed in combat. It didn’t make him the best person to be around, but he didn’t care.

Only a few people had been able to get him to relax a bit around them. His fellow Blackwatch agents, for one, especially McCree. Tracer, on occasion, especially when they were finished sparring. He respected Captain Ana Amari, thanks to her maternal concern for her subordinates matching the severity she drilled them with. Winston, thanks to his to-the-point speaking pattern that minimized wasted time. And the medic, Angela Ziegler, also known as “Mercy”. She had been instrumental in saving his life, but that was long ago and no longer informed any part of their dynamic. Outside of that she had treated Genji with patience, respect, and empathy. He did not open up fully to any of them, but he was definitely able to loosen up around some of his fellows.

Which is why he was caught so off-guard when he stumbled into Angela standing stock-still in a doorway in the organization’s Swiss headquarters. Genji was leaving the training ground after slicing up a training dummy on McCree and Ana’s recommendation, and had been looking absentmindedly at the walls when he’d walked into the combat medic. Frowning, he looked up at her, opening his mouth to ask her what was wrong, when he followed her gaze upwards.

Ah. That explained it. Some prankster had set up mistletoe above the doorway leading from the training room: a childish custom whereby any two people who stood underneath it had to kiss. And seeing as he had been the only person in the room for the last hour and that this hallway led nowhere else, and it hadn’t been there when he’d entered...someone was trying to prank him. And Angela as well.

 Well, he wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. Genji would have shoved his way past the person blocking the doorway if it hadn’t been Angela. He was wrathful and capable of great violence, but he wasn’t going to take that out on her. “Ziegler. I understand that this is awkward, but perhaps we can just ignore this and move on with our lives? I’m willing to pretend that this did not happen if you are.”

Angela was horrified. The last thing she remembered was Lena asking her to meet her in the training room to “take a look at a funky lil’ thing the accel’rator does when I use it a buncha times”. She should have been suspicious that Lena was asking for her help rather than Winston’s, but when she went to Winston, he’d given her the a-OK to talk to Lena. When she’d found the mistletoe, she’d planned on turning around and walking away, but then she’d heard someone approaching and waited to see who it was. The fact that Genji was the one who had rounded the corner froze her feet to the ground, but she didn’t know why. She could only stare up at the offending plant in shock until Genji spoke to her.

 The medic averted her eyes. What could be the harm? It was a little bit of fun, after all, to play along with the holiday customs.

 “...Ziegler? Are you well?”

 Without thinking, she grabbed Genji by the shoulders and mashed her face into his faceplate. Her lips met the cold metal covering his face, but she swore she could hear his lips pressing against the metal separating them. Genji’s eyes widened in surprise, but he didn’t push her away, even as his breathing got heavier beneath his mask and he found himself returning her kiss as best he could against the barrier between them. Mercy’s eyes closed as she deepened the pseudo-kiss, her fingers running over his biceps, on his pectorals, along the back of his neck as he found himself holding her by the small of her back. What was going on?

A hissing sound interrupted them and he realized, with some embarrassment, that he was venting heat, his body reaching a critical temperature as his face grew hot: pore-like openings in his right shoulder unlocked and let loose a blast of cool steam. The sound was enough to break them out of the reverie, and they both pulled away from each other simultaneously. Mercy’s face was beet-red and she was breathing heavily, and he knew he was in the same situation.

 Mercy’s head felt hot and she was slightly dizzy with the surge of emotion that had gone over her. “I...am not sure where that came from.”

 “Nor do I.” Angela decided not to point out that Genji now had a bright red lipstick mark where his mouth was beneath his faceplate. “That was…”

 “Sorry, Genji, I…” He raised a hand.

“That was nice, Ziegler. I…” Genji trailed off, and the two of them stood in an awkward silence, faces hot, cheeks red, chests heaving as they regained their senses. Genji tried not to notice how Angela’s rising and falling chest made her breasts sway slightly, cooped up as they were beneath her tight combat suit.

 “...”

 “...”

 “...I’ll see you around, Genji?”

 “...Yes.” Genji replied, still dumbfounded, as Angela paused for a moment before turning around and walking away. He waited until she’d turned the corner before he started after her. Why did he only now just notice how widely her hips swayed when she walked, how much her pants hugged her thighs, how tightly the back of her suit clung to the outline of her rear?

He needed a break. And a shower. And perhaps some time alone with the memories of what he’d just seen and experienced, and then another shower after that.

Angela, meanwhile, was trying hard not to hop-skip like a schoolgirl down the hallways of her employer’s organization. She had to be professional. But that had been some of the most fun she’d had in a long time. She needed a bath. And a bit of time to think about how Genji’s muscles felt underneath her fingers. And then another bath.

As the video feed showed Genji and Angela taking different exits from the hallway leading from the training room, chuckles rang out from the observers.

 “Well, I’ll be. That went better than expected. And I know what that awkward lil’ gait means for Genji: last time I saw ‘im move like that, he’d been reminiscing ‘bout the time he got the Prime Minister of Japan’s daughter in bed with him…’longside Miss Korea an’ the heiress to some South African renewable energy megacorp.” McCree nodded sagely, as if this wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. “Tracer, I believe ye owe me. Pay up.”

 Tracer pouted, but forked over a stack of bills to the American gunslinger. “S’not fair, y’know. I said they’d snog, for sure, just not that they’d get handsy. No gropin’, even!” The winnowy, flighty operative crossed her arms and frowned.

 “Ahaha! S’yer loss, Tracer. My boy’s got it. Speakin’ o which...hold up.” McCree flipped through the paper, then glared at Tracer. “This’s worthless British pounds! What’re ye doin’, givin’ me currency that’s not worth th’ paper it’s printed on?” Tracer stuck her tongue out at McCree, then laughed again.

 “Sorry, McCree! S’not my fault we’re in Switzerland. Next time yer in the UK, I’m sure you’ll have a doozy of a time…’less you wanna exchange it for francs here for seventy percent of the value, of course!”

 “Cut the chatter, you two.” Captain Amari spoke sharply, wagging a finger at McCree and Tracer, but couldn’t disguise the glee in her voice or the twitch of her tattooed eye that gave away her mirth. “We all did great. Winston, good job on the camera placement. Tracer, well done setting up the mistletoe. McCree, fine work convincing him to work out. I think we’ve given the lovebirds plenty to think about. Maybe keep the cameras off them next time they’re alone together, hm?”

 “Actually, captain, I’m fairly certain that it’ll be quite a bit longer before…” Winston cut himself off when Ana glared at him, nervously drumming his toes on the floor of his Swiss laboratory. “Uh, nevermind. I’m glad that this turned out well, and my camera caught it all. Should we delete the footage?”

 Ana tapped her chin, then shook her head. “No, keep it. Not for nefarious purposes, mind you. But it’ll be fun one day, I’m sure. I can imagine Genji and Angela as an adorable and very saucy couple. Those two need to unwind with each other.”

 McCree’s eyes danced between Winston and Tracer, and he mouthed the words Grandma really wants grandkids, huh? Tracer guffawed, then covered her mouth, while Winston just looked confused.

 “Nothing so crass, Jesse.” He gulped and scooted away from Captain Amari, who winked in his direction.

 “Well, if’n that’s all, I’ll be headin’ to the mess. I’m thinkin’ Genji will want some time alone.”

 “Not without me, cowboy! Race ya to dinner!”

 Tracer gave McCree a whole minute’s head start before leaving herself, but Ana and Winston knew it wouldn’t matter. She’d be there in a few seconds.

 “So...matchmaking success?” Winston eyed the camera feed, considering when he next might be able to discreetly remove the bug he’d planted in the hallway.

 Ana patted Winston on the shoulder and nodded, replaying in her head the passionate kiss that Genji and Angela had shared. “Matchmaking success.”

8. “We play online games together all the time and you keep flirting with me over chat. Is this a thing or are you just trying to get pocket heals???”

"Good news boys," Rose says over voice chat. "I found us a healer."

This is met with instant scepticism in the form of many voices speaking at once. Lailah is chuckling faintly in the background. Sorey speaks up.

"Like a real one? An authentic one?"

It is a notorious inside joke among the group. At five people, they make an almost complete team, and everyone's favourite choices of heroes include everything but actual focused healing. Sorey himself tends to lean on damage dealers or tanks, and today will be no different.

"A healer main, with some focus on Mercy," she says, "or, as he described it in short, a person with terrible friends."

"He's not gonna find better here," Zaveid says, and Rose laughs.

"True, but I'll let him find that out for himself. I'm inviting him."

They wait for a few silent moments, until their Discord channel chimes with a new arrival.

"Guys, this is Mikleo," Rose says. "Mikleo, these are my terrible friends."

"Hey!" Zaveid chuckles. "What about letting him find out for himself?"

"Well, show him then." Rose is clearly grinning. "Now, play nice."

"Hi guys," a new voice sounds over the channel. "I'm Mikleo, and I'm here to babysit you today."

He is met with muted laughter. Lailah queues them up for placement, and the timer begins to tick.

"I like him already," Sorey says.

They place in Dorado, and Zaveid, Eizen, and Rose make their choices in an instant. Winston, Reinhardt, and Genji. Sorey sighs fondly.

He watches as Lailah chooses Mei and wonders what he should pick for himself. Mikleo's icon is still blank and static.

"Hey, Mikleo," he says. It is the first word spoken after all the introductions have gone around. "Stick with the backline, okay? Don't fall for the temptation of following these reckless fools."

"Excuse you," Rose's tone is playfully offended. "I am perfectly capable of coming back when I need to."

"I'm not," Zaveid says gleefully. "I don't know about you, but I'm dying a hero's death."

They wait for a few silent moments for Mikleo's reaction. Sorey bites his lip.

"Backline it is, then," Mikleo says, his tone warm and amused. Sorey grins.

He selects Junkrat and waits for Mikleo's choice. The timer ticks down.

Mikleo is a good healer. Like, a really good one. Over two matches, they have won both and only had a few deaths and they were all Rose's or Zaveid's.

Sorey tries to stick with Mikleo as much as he can, but he finds himself distracted a lot with chasing kills. It doesn't seem to matter, though, as he seems to find Mikleo just behind him every time he turns to return to the control point. Mikleo waves once, and Mercy greets him warmly. Sorey greets him back, and Orisa waves as she runs.

Mikleo keeps them all alive, zipping like a fly back and forth between them. He never stills and always keeps moving. Sorey finds himself emboldened by it, and makes some reckless moves he would never attempt otherwise.

It has mixed results, but overall it leads to some impressive wins. Sorey begins thanking Mikleo for almost every little heal, though Mikleo remains silently focused.

In Dorado, Sorey selects Pharah and flies up to the bells, sticking close to the edge where Mikleo can join him as Mercy. Together, with some practice and a lot of amusement, they learn to play the Overwatch theme on the bells.

For the last match for the evening, Sorey selects Doomfist. After a few matches of remaining with the backline, he is beginning to itch for some action.

It takes him away from Mikleo, who has now selected Ana and remains with the backline. The loss is noticeable, and one or two deaths quickly returns him to his usual caution. It still goes as it should, and they stop the capturing of the point - the limousine in Hollywood - until the timer ticks down to a minute and a half. That is when things begin to go south.

The enemy team's Lucio and Reinhardt are both down and respawning, but their own team has taken a heavier hit. Sorey is alone on the point, waiting for Lailah, Zaveid, and Eizen to spawn again. Mikleo is hidden on the rooftop above him, while Rose waits in the building as Torbjörn. Her turret is mounted in the hallway, ready to go.

The three remaining members of the enemy team attack as one. A Reaper and a Junkrat, flanked by a Mercy who boosts the Reaper's attack.

It all happens very quickly then. Sorey readies himself for a meaningless escape and turns around, only to look up and see something falling towards him. It is just a small spot in the sky, and it lands too quickly for him to realise what it is before it does.

His screen lights up yellow for a second. He turns and sees three life bars, all halfway depleted, all painted a sickly purple. His breath catches in his throat.

It takes him less time to react than it does his enemies. The Mercy on the other team is still frantically healing the McCree, only letting go once she realises what is happening. By then it is too late. Sorey lunges, and a username blinks in red across his screen as she falls.

He turns to the reaper, who fires a last shot before Sorey returns fire. Reaper's body bounces off the wall and falls limp to the ground.

Last is the Junkrat, who has had a few moments to turn and run. Sorey rocket punches to get himself closer, and as the Junkrat turns for a harried glance at him, he aims carefully and presses shift.

Both he and Junkrat go flying into the sky. The uppercut takes all but a fraction of his health, and Sorey is quick to finish him off with a simpler melee attack. The last name appears, and Sorey is safe again. At least until he lands on the ground, flanked on all sides by Junkrat's bombs.

He yelps, loud and undignified, into the microphone. As he presses a frantic back and scrambles out of the minefield, he becomes aware of his screen once again lighting up yellow. It pulses, again and again, as he is mended all the way back to full health.

He hears it then, now outside of the single-minded haze of focus. Mikleo is laughing, clear and bright as a bell.

"No way did that work," he almost yells. Now Zaveid is cheering too.

"Way to go, Mickey!"

Rose as well.

"What the hell!" She hollers. "Lailah, can we keep him?"

Now out of the grip of adrenaline and forceful tension, Sorey begins to laugh too.

"Dude," he says. "You just saved my life."

It takes them all a moment to gather their wits and quiet down. Sorey is already moving to rejoin the group, with Mikleo's healing shots still following him. Sorey may be moving a tad predictably, but he is impressed with his aim all the same.

Mikleo clears his throat, his voice warm with laughter.

"That'll be ten dollars, please," he jokes, and Sorey laughs happily.

"How about I just become your personal bodyguard instead?"

There's a pause, then Mikleo answers, "Deal."

They finish the match with no contest. The enemy team trickles in and dies one by one as the last minute ticks down, and they cheer loudly over voice chat as their team appears as the victorious one.

As promised, Mikleo takes his leave amongst more praise and congratulations. When he logs off, Sorey shakes his head, still amused and giddy.

"What just happened?" he asks. Zaveid answers him.

"You just became a personal bodyguard, that's what," he says. Eizen's chuckle is deep and fond.

"Sounds familiar," he says, and Zaveid laughs.

The Various Game Modes

There are many different game modes in Overwatch, excluding Quick Play and Competitive Play. Many of these modes are included with limited time events, which are usually seasonal (winter, summer, etc.). Something else worth mentioning would be that these game modes are all in “The Arcade.” This is a more laid-back style of playing, and is where you access these game modes. Many of them are also available in custom games (private matches), where you play versus your friends with any settings you want.

In this mode, the maps are limited to a much smaller number, and the maps themselves are much smaller (also mirrored, like the King of the Hill maps). Also, they’re generally unique to a few arcade game modes.

One of these maps is the Necropolis, and personally I enjoy playing on it. As you can tell, the map is a lot smaller and offers the same opportunities to people on both sides.

Each team is obviously made up of 3 people, and they fight over the course of a few minutes. Respawns are disabled, so each player gets 1 life per round. If at least one player is left alive on each team after this time, a point in the middle of the map unlocks and whichever team captures it wins the round, even if the enemies are still alive. If one team is entirely eliminated, then their opponents win.

There’s also another variation of this mode, which is 3v3 Lockout Eliminations. The rules are the same, except for one thing. After winning a round with a specific character, your team cannot pick that hero for any other round in that game. For example, if one team wins with Mercy, Roadhog, and Soldier 76, then that team can’t use any of those heroes regardless of who was playing who. However, the other team can still use those 3 heroes (until they win a round with them).

The scoring is best out of 5 rounds, so teams race to win 3 rounds.

A very similar game mode, 4v4 TDM is also played on smaller maps, but also includes various versions of other maps from the main game. For example, Hollywood is restricted to the middle third of the map and is available for play on this game mode.

The teams are made of 4 people, and hero choices are not limited like in 3v3 Eliminations (you just can’t have the same hero twice on 1 team, same as the main game). Respawns are enabled, so you can respawn as much as you need to.

Whatever team reaches 30 eliminations on the other team wins, but Mercy’s Resurrect ability subtracts one point from the other team’s score (personally, I dislike this feature, because teams can win just because they have a Mercy on their team).

Very similar to Team Deathmatch, 8 Player Free for All is all about getting eliminations as fast as possible. 8 players play on small maps (same map pool as 4v4 TDM) and get as many “final blows” as possible. This mode was introduced with the map “Château Guillard,” specifically made for FFA.

While eliminations include small contributions to kills in the main game, getting a “kill” in these deathmatch game modes means delivering the final blow on an enemy. Additionally, because 8 players are fighting against each other and every man is out for himself, this is one of the most hectic game modes in Overwatch.

Hero selection is not limited whatsoever, but damage heroes should generally do the best. However, some heroes like Winston, Moira, and Brigitte do surprisingly well in this game mode. This is because they can easily “steal kills.” This is done by doing a small amount of damage to finish off an enemy who was already weak. Many times, the enemy was already fighting someone or had just concluded a fight.

In mystery heroes, there’s only one difference from the regular game: every time you spawn in, you’re using a different hero, randomly selected. Ultimate abilities are reset every life, so the use of them is rather rare.

In no limits, it’s simple. Just like mystery heroes, the main rules of the game are the same, besides hero selection. In this mode, you can have any amount of one hero on a team.

For example, you can have 6 Lucios skating around a team of 3 Genjis and 3 Winstons all in the same match.

In total mayhem, a regular game takes place (regular hero selection, too), but pretty much everything is enhanced. All heroes double their health, ultimate abilities charge faster, and abilities are only on “cool down” for half the time. These games are usually very hectic, and can last for a long time because of increased survivability.

Now, let’s go over some limited time event game modes. As mentioned before, these are usually seasonal, and are featured in the Summer Games, Halloween Terror, Winter Wonderland, and the Lunar New year event.

One of these game modes, which recently ended, is Lucioball.

Lucioball is very simple, and is very similar to Rocket League. 3 Lucios spawn on each side of the field and try to play soccer with a giant ball, punching it and shooting it across the field. It’s pretty much just soccer, and that’s why it’s included in the Summer Games event, which lasts around mid August.

Halloween Terror’s iconic event is Junkenstein’s Revenge, which is PvE (wave survival, 4 players vs. bots).

This game mode has multiple different variations, including difficulty (beginner, expert, etc.). There is also an endless version, where all heroes are available for selection. In the regular mode, only 4 heroes are available: Soldier 76, Hanzo, Ana, and McCree. Halloween Terror begins in early October and ends on the 1st of November.

In Winter Wonderland, 2 events are available. The first one to be introduced was Mei’s Snowball Offensive, and the next year Yeti Hunter was available.

This game mode is pretty much just 6v6 eliminations (1 life per round), but with a 1 shot 1 kill system of snowball shooting, which can be reloaded around the map (an old and weird game mode, personally I didn’t like it so I don’t know much about it).

Yeti Hunter was a 5v1 game mode, the lone player being a giant yeti (a Winston cosmetic) with a lot of health. The 5 Meis have to hunt the Yeti down, otherwise he’ll have chances to eat meat around the map and become stronger. If the Yeti dies, he loses, but he wins if he gets 5 eliminations on the Mei team (respawns enabled, which means that 1 Mei can die 5 times and lose for the team).

Lunar New Year, lasting between January and March, brought us Capture the Flag, which has changed a lot between its release and right now. There have been many gameplay changes, as well as map changes.

Quite simply, each team has a flag at their spawn, and the other team must take it and bring it back to their spawn. While there are many more specific and unimportant rules, I haven’t played (or enjoyed) the game mode long enough to know all of these. With the introduction of the map Ayutthaya, the game mode was made available on that map for most of the year. However, the game mode is also played during the event on many of the King of the Hill maps, the most famous of these being Lijiang Tower, which makes sense because it is a Chinese holiday. The map is decorated with Chinese lanterns and many other lighting effects during this time.

While there are even more game modes after all of these, most of them are sort of spinoff game modes, or are just map restrictions (and this post is already long enough). For example, whenever a new map comes out (like Busan, not even a week ago), that map is available in its own category of the Arcade.

As you can see, Petra Deathmatch is currently available in the Arcade, but it’s really just 8 Player FFA limited to that 1 map. Also, Mystery Duel is a very similar game mode to 3v3 Eliminations, but incorporates Mystery Hero rules (2 players spawn on opposite sides of a small map with the same character, and duel with Elimination game mode rules).

The last notable thing about the event game modes would be that all of them are available in the few weeks of the Anniversary event, which lasts from the middle of May to the middle of June. In the Spring, additional PvE game modes are available (Retribution and Uprising), which are very story based. While I personally enjoyed these, I wouldn’t really consider them game modes of Overwatch.

One Ally Ana Tip for Every Hero

Hey! So, I’ve been getting into this series by a youtuber named KarQ, where he has a pro player come in as a guest to his channel, and makes a video where they talk about their main and every single matchup in the game, including the mirror match. He also has them offer one general tip for the hero.

I really love this idea and the series has taught me a lot for playing as and against several heroes in the game, so as a very un-professional Ana player, I wanted to make a list of things that I wish my allies would do when I’m on Ana. Ana is easily the most mechanically intensive support hero in the game, and there are a lot of small things that you, as her teammate, can do to help make her a lot more effective. Without further ado, click the readmore for one (several) tips to help your ally Ana as every hero!

General Tip: A significant amount of the Overwatch community is divided over the “I need healing” ping. Some, usually healer mains, think it’s always disrespectful, while others think it’s okay if not used in excess or when healers clearly can’t get to you, and then there are some who spam it when they have 195/200 HP. So, what I recommend is as follows: If you’re low on health and within an Ana’s line of sight, she knows. Healers get a big “CRITICAL” icon over your silhouette, even through walls, when you’re low. So when you’re on the point and low, Ana knows to heal you, don’t ping her. However, since Ana is a sniper hero, I actually appreciate it when my allies ping healing if they’re behind me as I spam down a choke point. In that case, the 70 HP or so you’re missing is more important than what I was doing, and I couldn’t see you because I was scoped in.

TL;DR: Ping healing when you’re behind your Ana. Don’t ping it when you’re behind a wall off the point, because usually she’s looking that way and is waiting for you to walk out from the wall.

Also, please, if you’re full HP, don’t walk or stand directly in front of your Ana. You’ll tank the shot and get healed instead of letting the shot go to its intended target, which is likely either a low hp enemy or ally, so you might have just doomed a teammate or saved an enemy.

ATTACK HEROES:

Doomfist: Realize that Ana can’t heal through walls. You have a big hitbox, and it’s even bigger for her, but when you punch away, chasing a flanker or a low target, you’ve probably left her line of sight. However, if you have a good Ana player on high ground and you ult while you have low HP, ask her for healing before you land. You’re invulnerable for a teeny bit after you land, but not to her healing, and since your landing zone is telegraphed as hell, she might be able to get a shot or two into you before you can even take damage. Use voice chat for this though, as it’s a big ask if she’s not expecting it.

Genji: PING WHEN YOU HAVE DRAGONBLADE. You are one of Ana’s best friends; treat her right and she will win games for you every time. Your blade is the second best target for Nano-Boost, after Tactical Visor, so unless you have a Soldier, always always always ping your Ana when you have your sword ready. Also, Nano-Boost is a point-and-click ability, sure, but it still requires Ana to have line of sight on you, so look for her before you pull the sword out and dash onto an enemy. In addition, with a nano-boost, if you dash-cancel a slash, that should be enough to kill a 200HP target where you’d normally need two swings, so make sure you remember that and don’t waste a swing on the empty air where an enemy used to be. This does allow you to kill most heroes through Transcendence with enough precision, so definitely keep that in mind. Also, just in case you two didn’t counter poor Zenyatta hard enough, if she doesn’t have Nano or you don’t have sword, her Biotic Grenade will prevent Zen’s allies from healing in his ult, so if you pull blade and hear Transcendence, you might still be able to kill some folks with purple health bars. Lastly, and this is very important: Nano-Boost lasts for eight seconds, and your blade only lasts for six. If she hits you before you pull your blade out, you have a whole two seconds to select the first person you’re gonna try to cut in half before any enhanced blade damage is lost. Take your time and select your target properly, don’t feel like you have to sword in right away.

McCree: In the lore, this woman taught you how to shoot, so keep that in mind. Nano High Noon isn’t the best combo in the game, but it works in a pinch. Also, her shots deal 70 damage and so do yours (before damage falloff), so if an average enemy takes three hits total from you two, they’re dead. Also, she can’t headshot, but you can, so if you see a 200HP hero surrounded by the purple aura of her shot, click on their head for an easy kill. Lastly, if your Ana is dying too much, or if you’re dying too much, stand right with her. She can keep you both alive by throwing a ‘nade at her feet, and you can peel those pesky flankers off of her with your Flashbang. Low-mobility friends have to stick together!

Pharah: Your mom is the second-best healer for you after your skywife Mercy, so keep the skies clear for her. She can still miss you as you jetpack around, so if you’re really low, try landing behind a wall where she can still see you. That’s pretty much it, other than the very niche case where you’re very low and you notice that your ally Ana just respawned. Several maps, especially control point ones, have a pretty clear line of sight from the spawn doors to the air far above the point, so if you need healing and your mom just spawned, fly straight up. I’ve found this works really well on maps like Oasis: City Center, Lijiang Tower: Night Market, Illios: Well, Eichenwalde, first point on defense, and King’s Row, first point on attack.

Reaper: Ever since the nerf to Nano-Boost that no longer increases your movement speed, the Beyblade combo is significantly worse than it used to be, but it still works in a pinch, so ping Death Blossom if she asks or if you’re the only real target on her team for it. Secondly, Biotic Grenade increases all healing that happens to you, including your passive lifesteal, so if you’re getting low and she tosses a ‘nade at your feet, consider continuing to shoot to keep yourself up instead of just Wraith Forming out, because you’ll be damn hard to kill through your passive and a ‘nade. If you do have to Wraith Form out, remember that she can still heal you, so either head in her direction if you’re really low or get out of her way for higher-priority targets if you know of a nearby mega health pack you can use instead.

Soldier: 76: You are Ana’s very best friend, better than Genji and even Reinhardt. Tactical Visor is the ultimate for Nano-Boost, so try to combo them as much as possible. If you haven’t enabled ally health bars on Soldier through the game’s settings, you really should. If you have done this and you see an allied Ana below 100 HP, use your Biotic Field on her. Her Biotic Grenade is ridiculously powerful on every hero in the game, except for her. She has no other way to heal herself other than tossing it at her feet, and it only gives her 100 health, and then no way to benefit from the increased healing after that. Your field can patch her back up to full no matter what unless she has to leave it, and in turn she can throw her grenade at you and perhaps other nearby allies as well, and continue to shoot those allies, healing them more. In contrast, if she has to ‘nade her feet and then you start taking damage on the point and throw down your field, you two have burned the same cooldowns but resulted with significantly less healing overall. Finally, if you both get caught in a Graviton Surge or are just near each other and taking lots of damage, the combo of ‘nade and Biotic Field together makes what I like to call a “Budget Transcendence,” and it will absolutely save your life.

Sombra: There isn’t much synergy that you two have, other than an EMP and a big anti-grenade being probably the most disabling combo in the game. If you hack a health pack and see her running to it, let her have it, because she can’t heal herself nearly as efficiently as she can heal you. Also, if you’re feeling very protective, you can just camp her and hack the Tracer and Genji that’re diving her all day, and from there, she’ll be able to reliably win that 1v1.

Tracer: In order for her to heal you, you have to not be blinking all over the map like a lunatic, which is really what you need to do in order to be effective, so usually the only healing you’ll get from her is when you run all the way over to her. However, all you’ll ever need is two shots to get back to full. Finally, and this is very important: If you see her land a sleep dart on an enemy Zarya or Orisa, do not, I repeat, DO NOT STICK THESE HEROES WHILE THEY ARE ASLEEP. Both have 400 max HP and will die to a bomb, but the initial contact of the bomb deals 5 damage, waking them up and giving Zarya just enough time to bubble herself and take no damage, or Orisa enough time to use Fortify and survive through her damage reduction. If you see an Ana sleep either of these heroes, just wave, maybe put down a spray, and gently drop the Pulse Bomb right next to their sleeping soon-to-be-corpse. Same goes for Moira, Reaper, and an enemy Tracer, but those heroes usually die when slept anyways, and aren’t worth a Pulse Bomb.

DEFENSE HEROES:

Bastion: Ana is the best support for keeping you alive in Turret form. You don’t move an inch, so she’ll never miss a shot, and if you’re dying, she can put 75 HP into you 1.2 times a second without ‘nade. If she does ‘nade you, your self-healing will be even more effective than before. However, if there are people in your face and she’s healing you, it might be a better idea to keep shooting instead of healing yourself, because there are very very few single heroes who can out-damage the healing of an Ana who is completely focused on you, especially with your armor. Finally, your ult is actually a decent target for Nano-Boost, especially against tank-heavy comps, so be sure to watch her ult charge and ping your own.

Hanzo: There isn’t much synergy here. If she randomly Nanos you after you toss your ult, it does actually enhance the damage, so don’t worry, she didn’t waste it. She really appreciates Sonic Arrows, because she is also a sniper. If you can Scatter enemy flankers off of her, she’ll really appreciate it, but that isn’t really your job. Just try to remember where she is and try to get to a position where you can still take shots but she can see you for healing, because you’re far more mobile than she is.

Junkrat: Tragically, she cannot heal your tire. I know, I was disappointed too. Other than controlling the area where she’s set up with your ridiculous zoning potential, there isn’t much you can do to help her. If you really want to get advanced, you can put extra priority on breaking things like Winston bubbles or Orisa shields when your allies are behind them, because that will allow her to heal those allies. In a similar vein, if you get dove by a Winston and you’re low, try to use your mine to knock yourself out of the barrier in her direction, and if she’s watching, she’ll heal you, because you’re pretty easy for her to snipe while you fly.

Mei: Be very considerate with your wall. It can completely cut her off from an ally she was healing if you aren’t careful, and unlike with an enemy Mei, she can’t even break a small section of your wall and shoot through it. Finally, she cannot heal you through your Cryofreeze, which is something unique to Ana. However, you will still benefit from Biotic Grenade’s healing increase if you freeze after it, so she might be able to let you pop out faster. Finally, the slow from your primary fire on a big tank like RoadHog or Reinhardt will usually let her land an easy sleep dart, which is often an easy kill.

Torbjorn: For once, your giant hitbox is actually a benefit to you, because you’re pretty easy for her to heal, and she’s pretty well-equipped to quickly top you off from far away. However, keep in mind that your turret will block her shots and not heal from it, so if you’re low, try not to let it be between you two. Also, if you’re both insane, Nano Molten Core is a thing that could potentially happen, so try it out if you have literally zero other options. Also, give her armor. 

Widowmaker: You’re generally a loner, and Ana isn’t as well-suited to heal you as someone like a Mercy or a Zenyatta, but she’ll certainly help you more than a Moira or a Lucio would. If you ping healing, it might take her a second to get to you, because she needs to find a line of sight to you and has no mobility. Other than that, try to save Infra-Sight for when she’s alive, because she’s a sniper too and will benefit from the ability more than some of your other allies.

TANKS:

D.Va: Sadly, you are probably the worst tank for an Ana to Nano-Boost, because it applies to your mech, and not you. As an Ana player, I’ve had my heart break because I desperately Nano’d a D.Va who threw down a Self-Destruct right after, which essentially wasted my Nano. That being said, you still do have 600 HP, so you can play even more aggressively than you normally do if you feel a Biotic Grenade splash on you. Just try not to chase anyone too far out of her line of sight.

Orisa: Nano-Boost reduces the damage that you take, just like your Fortify ability. Combine these two with her Biotic Grenade and constant healing and you can basically tank the world. The amount of damage that you can just flat-out negate with this combo is very surprising. Just be careful to not let your Ana die during it, because that 75 HP 1.2 times a second is a very key component in your ability to survive everything.

Reinhardt: All these wimpy DPS heroes need to combine their own ultimate with Nano-Boost to get value out of it. Real heroes like you can make the best of a Nano anytime, anywhere. When you hear “You’re powered up, get in there!” just charge into the enemy team and start swingin’. Just be careful if you two are the only people left, because if you charge away from her, she’ll likely die without you or another tank. However, if you get a Nano as or after you land four or more heroes in a Shatter, then it doesn’t matter at that point, they’re all dead. Lastly, while it is your job to stand in front of your team and hold up your rectangle, try not to stand or move directly in front of your Ana, because your body will block her shots, unlike every other ally of yours.

Road Hog: You thought you were unkillable before? Try having an Ana give you a Biotic Grenade. That 100 initial HP combined with the 300 from your Take A Breather, which will be increased to 450 by the grenade, will make you a very, very tanky pig. So, yes, if you have just 50 HP remaining and both you and your ally Ana press the E button, you will return to full HP. Also, Whole Hog is a really great ultimate for Nano-Boost, so ping her when you have it. Just try not to spend too much time flanking, because if she can’t see you, she can’t help you. If you do have an ally Ana, consider playing more like an anchor tank than a half-tank/half-dps, because she really can allow you to block almost as much damage as something like a Reinhardt with just your face. It’s also a great way for her to build ult charge.

Zarya: Bubble her. Bubble her often. Ana’s self-peel, unlike Moira’s Fade, Lucio’s boop, or Mercy’s Guardian Angel, requires a lot more skill from her in order to work, and also has a much longer cooldown, so a bubble will definitely save her life quite often. You probably won’t get as much charge as you would from something like a fellow tank or a less-mobile DPS hero, unless you’ve reached that stage of the game that happens to every Ana player where they have to stick so close to their team that their weapon might as well not have a scope. Finally, if you have an amazing Grav and then the enemy Zenyatta responds with a Transcendence, don’t despair: A good Ana will follow up with a Biotic Grenade and negate all healing for the Zen’s entire team, which will usually result in the monk watching his allies die around him and start sweating for when his invulnerability ends.

SUPPORTS:

Ana: No Limits is a fun game mode, for sure, but I’ve literally never seen this happen in Arcade, so I don’t have much. I guess you can really torture an enemy by chaining sleep darts...

Lucio: Her grenade and your Amp it Up on healing will allow a team to survive pretty much anything. Just try to visit her every now and again, because you can heal her better than she can heal herself. Also, while being impossible to hit as you wallride is sort of your job, remember that this also makes it difficult for her to heal you. Finally, try to use your speed boost to bring her back to the point or out of tight spots. She’s getting older and isn’t as fast as you or some of your more mobile friends.

Mercy: Tragically, your damage boost does not increase the amount that she heals with her shots. If you play a lot of Mercy, you’re probably used to staying on tanks, which is definitely your primary job, but you are far better equipped to stay with high-mobility flanker heroes than she is, especially on more cramped maps. She, however, is extremely well-suited at keeping tanks alive with her burst healing through her grenade, and she does actually heal a little bit faster than you if she doesn’t miss, until she has to reload. Finally, as this is always a suggestion, keep her topped off so she doesn’t have to throw her grenade at her feet to stay alive, and can use it on the rest of the team instead. Lastly, starting a match with your damage boost beam on her is a great way to show support player solidarity, and also a funny way to tilt your dps players.

Moira: You do short-range, she does long-range. Like every healer, keeping her up is a good idea, but you two share the trait of being able to heal others better than yourself, as she has to ‘nade her feet and you have to lifesteal something other than a shield. Thusly, you two should try to watch out for each other. Also, Ana/Moira is probably the best support combo for triple or even quad tank compositions, because her grenade and your healing both working very well for tanks. Finally, while Nano-Boost sadly doesn’t increase the team healing you do with Coalescence, it does increase the damage, and therefore the amount that you heal yourself. Biotic Grenade does the same, so Ana can press two buttons and make you into a psuedo-tank just from the obscene amount that you’ll be healing yourself.

Symmetra: You’re actually a far better Nano target than people think, just running around holding down the left mouse button with no remorse. Ana also greatly appreciates your shield generator, because it allows her to take 175 damage before she needs more than one grenade at her feet to get back to full, instead of the 100 she’s used to. Other than that, try to save her life from things like a D.Va bomb with your barrier, because she’s a slow grandma and might not be able to get behind a wall in time.

Zenyatta: You probably won’t see her on your team too often, since you two fulfill a rather similar “off-healer, off-dps” role. However, if you do end up on the same team as her, try to give her your Harmony Orb pretty often, because she can switch healing targets much faster than you can, but struggles to heal herself. She, like any sniper, also appreciates Discord Orb on her targets, so if you really trust her, you can just babysit her with your orbs and make her a very significant threat. Finally, if you see her use her Nano-Boost, especially on a high-mobility target like a Genji with Blade, give that person your Harmony Orb. It’s Ana’s job to keep her Nano target alive, but unlike her shots, your orb doesn’t miss once you select who gets it. If you’re a three-person team of a DPS main and two support mains, Ana, Zenyatta, and Genji or Soldier is a very potent composition.

Let the Summer Games Begin

A/n: Y’all probably didn’t know, but I am a huge Overwatch fan. I play the games, read lore, fanfiction. It has ruined my life, but this in honor of the Summer Games and the Overwatch World Cup. Good luck to all players out there ;)

Warnings: Foul language, Extremely sarcastic language, and just regular things most people who play Overwatch says

“Yes! My boy is back in the games again!” You yelled off the top of your lungs as you threw one fist in the air and the other held your phone.

“(y/n) it is way too god damn early in the morning for me to talk to you.” Jungkook grumbled, walking out of his room all wrapped up in his blanket. He was just a walking blanket burrito that was shuffling around your shared house. It wasn’t even that early in the morning, but Jungkook stayed up till four in the morning playing.

“Yeah yeah fuck you too.” You mumbled as you jumped off the couch to walk over to your laptop. “In case you wanted to know this year’s team for Korea has just released their members’ names.” You informed. “Hurry up and get on so we can group up. At least I’ll have one DPS to depend then some dumb kid on reaper doing nothing.”

“Wait the members for the Korean team were released?!” Jungkook, seemed to have finally woken up.

“Bitch did I stutter?”

“(y/n), you’re a horrible best friend why didn’t you tell me?!” Jungkook threw off his blanket and made the dash for his computer.

“That’s what I screaming about earlier. Damn you’re dumb and deaf now.” You rolled your eyes as you watched the blue light from Jungkook’s screen reflect over his face.

“What?! Miro is not on the team this time? But he was mvp last year, and he so killed it.” Jungkook whined. “Who the fuck is Mano? I’ve never heard of him.”

“Yah, Mano was a good pick over Miro.” You defended.

“And why is that?”

“Because Miro is shit on Reinhardt, Mano is way better. Mano is more efficient and can execute better hammer downs than Miro. Give the dude a chance you’ve never seen him play.”

“And you have?”

“Obviously more than you to know about this tanker than you.” You stuck your tongue out at Jungkook.

“But isn’t Saebyeolbe so attractive? I’ve never met such an attractive player, he’s beautiful inside and out.” You swooned over the most attractive player from LW Blue.

“Yah, what about me? Or Yoongi or Hongbin?” Jungkook shot back.

“Tsk, no way I would date one of you guys. You are all ugly, especially you Jungkook. You’re like some weird muscular bunny, and I would have never thought that ‘muscular’ and ‘bunny’ would ever come together.” You teased.

“Yah you punk! I swear I will leave you to die on the battlefield.” Jungkook threatened.

“Too bad he has a girlfriend~” You sighed, ignoring Jungkook’s threat. “Also the god is on the team again. Ryujehong is back! For sure we are going to win.” You smirked and tucked your chin in between your thumb and index finger.

“You need to calm down (y/n), I’ve never seen anyone go insane over Ryujehong before.” Jungkook scoffed.

“Take that rude comment back. Ryujehong is the best Ana in the world, he is god. You’re just jealous because you can’t aim like him and he’s a better support than you.” You gasped loudly.

“Yes, I would love to have his aim. And of course he’s a better support than me, I don’t play as a support.”

You smirked, “that’s how I know you are shit at support.”

“Aish shut your mouth.” Jungkook groaned as he threw a small tsum tsum plush, that was by his laptop, at you.

“Hurry and accept my invite.” You said, changing the subject. Jungkook rolled his eyes and accepted your request to play. Once you were set up in the game and you had to choose your hero. You immediately picked Mercy, your main hero. On the other hand, Jungkook picked McCree.

“Aren’t you excited for the summer games event? That Mercy skin is so mine.” You said.

“Same here, but I want that McCree skin.” Jungkook agreed. The game loaded and you were dropped onto a map. You and Jungkook were on defense, on assault map. So in order to win the opposing team couldn’t take the two capture points on the map. You had fifty seconds to set up your defense around the first capture point with the rest of your team. Countdown for the match to begin ticked down to zero, and the opposing team came rushing out of their spawn. You powered Jungkook up with a blue damage boost ray that came out of your staff. You could hear that hit meter tick as Jungkook fired off bullets, and soon a red skull flashed in the middle of your screen informing you that Jungkook killed the other McCree.

You could hear the heavy foot steps of a Reaper hoping to get an easy pick off of you. “Jungkook there is a Reaper behind me, get him!” You screamed as you backed away, pulling out your pistol to hopefully land some damage. To avail you ended up getting blasted in the face with shotgun rounds, killing you.

“Jungkook, you thot! You were supposed to kill him. Protect your healer or something.” You scolded as you were rushing to get back to your from spawn.

“What, what do you want me to do?!” A second after he said his sentence, you saw that he got eliminated by the same Reaper in the kill feed.

“God damn it, you’re a shitty healer (y/n).” Jungkook cursed.

“What do you want me to do? I was coming back from spawn, after you betrayed me.” You flew to your other teammates who needed healing, as you began to build up to your ultimate ability.  

“What are you doing rez me!” Jungkook said, you gave him an ‘are you shitting me?’ face, and pressed the button that displayed the status of your ultimate.

“My ultimate is charging.” Jungkook heard the light German accent feminine voice through his headphones.

“And no way am I going to solo rez you. The least I will do it two because it is actually worth it. It is so dumb to solo ult as Mercy.” You rolled your eyes as you kept pocketing a D.va. Jungkook was then back in the fight, trying to ward off many enemies, by eliminating them.

“(y/n) I need healing...” He said, but you didn’t start to heal him, by then he started to spam the ‘I need healing’ button.

“Hold on I am pocketing this D.va give me a second.” Before you could use your guardian angel ability Jungkook was trying to run away, but he already died.

“Oh my god (y/n) you’re so fucking awful you could have helped me.” Jungkook whined.

“Hush you weird ass bunny, I am not going to fly to you in a feeble attempt to heal, but fail because it was inevitable that you were going to die, and then I will be left going against three people and ultimately getting gang banged. I am the only support on this team, because you bone heads decided to run a single support meta.” You explained. By the time you were done talking you had your ult, and so you just needed to keep pocketing as a distraction so your team could re-group. You flew to a Hanzo to heal him, but he got shot in the head, quickly ending his life. You were surrounded by a Pharah and a Genji.

“Holy shit Jungkook, I’ve got a Genji and a Pharah up my ass help!” You screeched as you started to run backwards pulling out your pistol. You started to aim and fire as the Genji was the first to attack, you started to fire while pushing your jump button, you final killed him. You kept going backward until you found the health pack.

“Jungkook where are you?” You asked, as the Pharah kept advancing. You pulled the same strategy as you did with the Genji, and you ended up eliminating the Pharah with a head shot.

“Holy mama Jin tiddies, I did it! Haha, I killed her Jungkook. That was sexy as hell.” You smirked as you switched back to your healing staff to rejoin your group.

“My ultimate is ready (y/n) come and boost me.” You followed Jungkook as you and him were going to find the high ground to pick off some enemies on the point. One by one you’re teammates were dying on the point. You heard McCree’s iconic line he says when the “Q’ button is pushed.

“It’s high noon.” Jungkook was trying to zone some head shots, but got sniped be a Widowmaker.

“What the shit, my tit is fucking pineapple.” Jungkook yelled in frustration. Right at this moment it was now or never for your ultimate, you were the only one left and you were in range, of resurrecting all five of your dead teammates.

“HEROS NEVER DIE.” WIth a brilliant yellow flash you’re whole team was alive again, and ready to contest. With a few ultimates that were popped you were able to get all of your opponents off the capture point and win.

“YES (Y/N) YOU ARE THIS MATCH’S SAVIOR I LOVE YOU.” Jungkook yelled, jumping up from his chair and started to bunny hop around your house. You blushed at Jungkook’s comment about him loving you, but the heat that painted your cheeks quickly dissipated. You sadly knew he never meant those three words in the light you hoped he said them in.  

“Are you two holding your nerd fest again?” An older male yawned as he walked past you and Jungkook into the kitchen.

“Oh Jin hyung, good morning.” Jungkook chirped to look up to tired male.

“What do you two want for breakfast?” Jin asked.

“Crepes?” You suggested.

“Fuck yeah, crepes.” Jungkook enthusiastically agreed.

“Okay, coming right up. (y/n) can you come and help me?” Jin said, as he started to take out ingredients for the batter. You hopped to your feet, to join Jin the kitchen. Jungkook involuntarily pouted as his favorite support player left him to play on his own.

“Jungkook what do you want in your crepe?” You asked, pulling out the fruits you wanted.

“Can you make me that protein crepe you always make me? Also can I have a chocolate and strawberry crepe?” Jungkook requested. Already at his age Jungkook was tall and pretty muscular, he also had a fast metabolism that left him always hungry. Sometimes you found yourself running from your house to the gym to drop off snacks for Jungkook while he was at practice. It was a bit of a pain in the butt, but you didn’t mind because it helped you get some exercise in. You washed strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries; while Jin was cooking the delicate crepes. You pulled one golden sheet and loaded it up with egg whites that were already cooked, ham, and a sliced avocado. You folded up the crepe, and moved onto the second crepe. You slathered the second crepe with a chocolate spread, and sliced strawberries; also folding up that crepe.

“Here you go muscle pig.” You said as you placed Jungkook’s plate down on the table.

“Thank you mom, thank you dad.” Jungkook said, as he sat down to eat. Both you and Jin looked at him.

“Wait, who’s ‘mom’ and who’s ‘dad’?” You asked curiously.

“Well isn’t obvious?” Jungkook took a bite out of the savory crepe first. “Jin is ‘mom’ and you are ‘dad’.”

“How so?” Jin wondered.

“Jin is the one who takes care of me the most, he always watches over me, cooks me food. And (y/n) you’re the one who can not be trusted with me, because you will probably lead me off a cliff. Also you do the least amount of work when taking care of me, and I will always ask where Jin is because I don’t want to die while I am with you.” You felt your eyebrow twitch with anger as you processed everything Jungkook said. You were about to say something, but Jin’s windshield wiper laugh cut you off.

“Haha that is one of the most accurate things I have ever heard.” He said in between giggles.

“That is so not true I am perfectly capable of taking care of Jungkook, I do not endanger him all the time.” You argued.

“That is so not true (y/n) that is a load of bull.” Jungkook said,

“He’s not wrong.” Jin agreed.

“Don’t expose me!” You screamed, “You two are so rude.” You said, taking your place at the dining table to eat with your plate.

“I will kill you both as you sleep.” You threatened, followed by you shoving a mouthful of crepe into your mouth. You sulked as you ate your crepe as Jungkook watched you with his wide bunny eyes and his two front teeth resting on his pink lips. Jin observed the younger creepily staring at his crush and chuckled to himself silently.

‘You two are the stupidest kids in love.’ He thought as he started to eat his own breakfast.

“(y/n) remember you have to play Overwatch with me after practice today. I want to win in Lucio ball so I could get summer loot boxes.” Jungkook said, pointing his fork at you. You rolled your eyes at Jungkook’s request.

“Yeah, I’ll try to play. Depends on how much homework I finish before practice today.”

“No exceptions...except for homework.”

“Yeah yeah I’ll be there.” You said, as you took your plate to the sink. “Also I don’t have any extra snacks in my bag, so I can’t run to the badminton gym to refuel your dumb ass. I have enough for only me.” You added.

“Fine I’ll bring my own food.” Jungkook grunted. Jungkook followed your lead and placed his own dirty dish in the sink.

There was knock on your door and your ears perked as you heard the sound of knuckles against the wood. Your head peeked out of your room, and you ran to the door with your bag and books in hand.

“That’s Jimin. We’re going to study at the library together. See ya Kook, see ya Jin.” You said as you dashed out the door. Jungkook could hear your voice from behind the closed door as you greeted Jimin happily. Jungkook wrinkled his nose in envy as you walked away with the handsome physical therapist major.

“You’re jealous again.” Jin said, not even making eye contact with Jungkook.

“Am not.” Jungkook defended.

“Unlike you muscle pig, I use my eyes to see. I know wrinkle your nose as if you smelled rotten eggs stuffed in a old sock, when you are jealous.”

“But why does (y/n) spend all of her time with Jimin.” Jungkook whined. “It is so unfair hyung.” Jungkook motioned to the door, from which you left.

“Ah poor muscle pig...” Jin ‘tsked’, chaking his head. “You train all of your bodily muscles, but never train your brain to become stronger. You do remember (y/n) and Jimin have the same major right? It does make sense that they would study together.” Jin explained.

“I don’t care about that. Jimin still gets her attention.” The poor bunny boy was still pouting.

“Uh who’s the one who makes (y/n) run from our house to the gym to deliver carrots and apples to them? Or plays Overwatch with them until four in the morning? (y/n) practically hovers around you whenever she has free time.” Jin pointed out.

“You’re right...” Jungkook sighed dejectedly. “ I do make her do a lot of things with me.”

“Yeah, remember in high school you would close your locker around the same time (y/n) would just so the two of you could walk home together?” Jin teased.

“Yah, don’t remind me about my unfertilized cell days.” Jungkook screamed at the older.

Jungkook was doing squats with weights for his practice as he still thought about you and Jimin. The both of you would be like a power couple on campus. The best freestyle swimmer and butterfly swimmer together? That is a match made in heaven. You and Jimin were probably easily the most charming people in your university; you both had many diverse talents; rarely lost your tempers; would be kind to anyone, even though you could secretly hate them, but never admit that out loud.

“Jungkook? Jungkook!!” A female voice interrupted him from his squats. Jungkook looked up to see a female teammate waiting for the weight bar.

“The last circuit is up, you’re supposed to be at the medicine balls now.” She said.

Jungkook licked his chapped lips out of bad habit, for when he was embarrassed because he did something wrong he would lick his lips. “R-right. I’ll get to it, sorry.” He apologized and walked over to the weighted balls. Usually around this time you would have stopped studying to deliver some sort of snack to him on your way to swim practice. He chuckled to himself as he remembered that sometimes you would run as fast as you could because you lost track of time and you were running late for practice. However, you still found time to drop off a tangerine or a bag full of nuts.

“Hey nice run today (y/n), I can’t believe we pr’d.” Sungkyung said, slapping your back. Sungkyung was part of your relay team, and she swam the back stroke portion.

“I mean I can’t be the only who can makes it possible, all of you guy help me.” You said, rubbing your wet hair, that was a few shades lighter than your actual (h/c) shade, with a (f/c) towel.

“(y/n) are you going to join the co’ed relay team? You are the fastest free style swimmer.” Hyeja asked. You wrinkled your face as you thought about the possibility.

“I’m no too sure...” You trailed, “I mean there’s probably someone who wants to swim in the race.”

“But Park Jimin is going to swim in the butterfly leg, it’ll be the perfect team. Guaranteed to bring home the gold.” Jayeon fantasized.

“Talk about Park Jimin...” Hyeja, smiled and elbowed you in the arm.

“He’s coming~” Jayeon squealed, as the broad shoulder swimmer came walking towards your group.

“We’ll see you later (y/n), good practice!” Syungkyung said, a little too loudly obvious, as she herded Jayeon and Hyeja away from you.  You waved them off, and turned to talk to Jimin.

“Hey (y/n)...” Jimin said, as you stopped right in front of you. His short pink hair was already dry, and looked fluffy to the touch. The both you were wearing the same swim team jackets of black and baby blue, with your university name printed on it. You both also had swim bags slung across your bodies of the same black and blue, stuffed with wet swim suits, goggles, caps, and towels. You could smell the permanent faint scent of chlorine that clung to Jimin’s tan skin, from all of the countless practices Jimin attended. The chlorine was also mixed with Jimin’s natural scent, it reminded you of clean sheets and detergent.

“What’s up Jimin.” You said, greeting him.

“So are you going to join the coed relay team for the freestyle leg?” He asked.

“Most likely I’m not going to join. I think there are other girls who would want to swim that leg. I’ll see, if there isn’t anyone who doesn’t want to swim the freestyle, I’ll do it.” You answered. Jimin stared at you with complete adoration, he thought your consideration was admirable.

Jungkook was biking towards the swim center. He was done with his night classes so he thought maybe you would want a ride back to the house. He clutched the brakes of his bike as he saw you and Jimin standing together.

“So did you want to go and get dinner with me? My treat, we can go wherever you want.” Jimin offered, with a shy smile. Jungkook looked at you Jimin sadly, he thought you were going to say ‘yes’ so there was point in him being there. So turned in the direction of the house, and sped off. His anger and sadness, pumping the pedals of his bike.

You remembered what you promised Jungkook earlier today, and shook your head. “I’m sorry Jimin, but I’m going to have to decline.’

“Oh....” Jimin said sadly, and looked at the ground.

“I’m sorry... I just promised my roommate something, and I have to hold that to him.” You admitted, smiling as you thought about the bunny like boy.

“No, it’s okay. I’ll just catch you at another time, okay?” You could see the melancholy behind Jimin’s kind smile.

“Okay..” You said quietly.

“I’ll see you then (y/n).” Jimin said, as he walked away, waving to you. You waved back and watched his figure walk away. When Jimin was gone, you turned to walk home. On your way home you stopped in a restaurant to order some lamb skewers for your two little, not so little, kids.

“I’m home.” You announced, slipping your shoes off. The plastic bag that held the skewers of meat rustled with every step you took.

“Where’s Kook?” You asked, expecting him to be on his laptop already playing.

“The bunny edge lord is sulking in his room.” Jin said, not even looking up from his rose gold iphone. You placed the plastic bag on the table, and Jin looked up from his screen.

“Don’t eat them all, the bunny still needs to eat. You might lose your fingers if you eat them all.” You said without missing a beat.

“Bunny Kook you in there?” You knocked on the bedroom door. You heard the rustling of sheets, but no pads of feet walking across the floor. You knew Jungkook never locked his door, so you pushed the door open. Jungkook was curled up on his bed cradling the medium sized Iron Man tsum tsum you gave him.

“Wow who stole your carrots?” You joked, hoping maybe you could bring Jungkook out of whatever funk he was in, if you approached comically. Jungkook sat up to look at you, still holding the soft toy.

“Park Jimin.” He grumbled.

You couldn’t help but laugh. “Park Jimin? When did he bite you in the butt?” You said.

“Today, like an hour ago when he asked you out to dinner.” Jungkook screamed. You were a bit taken back from Jungkook’s confession.

“Wait, what do you mean by that Jungkook?” Your face straightened with seriousness.

“I-I....uh....” Jungkook shrank back a little, squeezing the Iron Man tightly. “Aish, I’m such dumb muscle pig...but I really like you (y/n). Maybe I don’t actually like you, I’m in love with you. You just compliment me so well, you help me where I am weak, and I always find joy in helping you in where you need it. You are super considerate towards me, you probably take care of me better than I can care for myself. You work hard, but you play hard, always making it fun to play with you. Only you play Overwatch with me every time I ask, you bring me snacks when I ask, and you make me whatever I ask for. It’s a bit selfish that I take advantage of your kindness, from time to time, but I fell in love with you. You are the perfect level of weirdness, kindness, and beauty. Only someone who does not have their five senses is the only one who can’t fall in love with you.” Jungkook hung his head lowly, after he confessed.

“I agree with you.” You said warmly.

“What?” Jungkook looked up to meet your warming smile, that made his heart flutter.

“I think the only person who can’t fall hopelessly in love with a weird mutated bunny like you, is someone without their five senses.” You confessed.

“Wait you really mean it?” Jungkook asked, round eyes filled with hope. You walked Jungkook and squeezed his large frame with your arms.

“Of course I mean it.” You said. Jungkook pulled you away from him, but captured you again with his lips.

“It’s about time that my two dumb roommates have found out that maybe you two have mutual feelings.” Jin screamed. Jungkook held you in his arms as the two of you giggled at your older roommate.

“Shall we go? There is lamb skewers and Overwatch waiting for you.” You said, earning a smile from Jungkook.

“Of course, I get to have my three favorite things in the world.”

“Okay, I know you like Overwatch and lamb skewers. What is the third thing?” You asked.

“You~” Jungkook answered cheesily as he nuzzled his bunny nose against you cheek. “Ew, you smell chlorine.” Junkook pulled away and crinkled his nose.

“What did you expect from me you dumb muscle pig?” You chuckled.

“But I am your dumb muscle pig~”

~Extra~

“Are you ready for this (y/n)?” Jungkook asked curiously.

“Yes, I am ready.”

“Are you absolutely sure you want to do this?”

“Yes Jungkook my body is so ready.” You answered,

“Are you absolutely sure?”

“Just hurry up and do it Jeon!!” You screamed, begging.

“Okay...three...two...one!” Both you and Jungkook opened your summer loot box. You saw a flash of yellow flipped on your screen. Your excitement was building up. But when all of your prizes settled you saw McCree dressed as a life guard. You stared at your screen with shock. 

“I got the McCree skin what?!” You screamed. Jungkook then opened his mouth. 

“The fuck I got the Mercy skin!” 

Lingo: (in order of appearance) 

DPS: Damage per second. A DPS hero is the hero that does the most damage in the game in terms that they usually get the most elminations in a game

Hammer downs: Reinhardt’s ultimate ability.

Tanker: Term used for someone who mainly plays a tank hero.

LW Blue: A competitive gaming team from South Korea. 

Spawn: The area where one team begins or re-spawns when killed.

Rez: Short for resurrect. Mercy’s ultimate in the game allows her to bring dead teammates back to life.  

Solo Rez: To use resurrect for one person. 

Solo ult: To use a hero’s ultimate for one person.

Pocketing: When healer uses all of their abilities for one person, and ignore the other team. Healers usually pocket tanks.

Meta: Any strategy, action or method used in a game which transcends a prescribed ruleset, uses external factors to affect the game. In this situation I am referring the team composition as the method of strategy used.

Pr’d: To beat a personal record. PR means personal record.

Appearance: Toshi is a young man, of average height, with a toned build. He has short blonde hair and deep green eyes. Before joining Overwatch, he would usually wear his street clothes; a black shirt, black and grey jacket, blue jeans, and black sneakers. Though not normally seen, he does have freckles on his face and shoulders.

When he joined Overwatch, he began to wear an outfit consisting of a sleeveless skin-tight shirt under a long, black coat. baggy cargo pants, a blue beanie with the Overwatch icon on the fold. Additionally​, under the fold is his logo, four small crosses lining a small mirror. (this is also his common default design).

Personality: Toshi was a silent person, usually stoic. A strange quirk with Toshi is that he always would refer to Reinhardt as ‘Father’ and Jack as ‘Dad’, this might be a result from him being for informal with Jack. something interesting about Toshi, is that he thinks of himself as always alone, only finding company in the Illusions he makes.

Weapons: Hardlight Mirror. Through the use of a special mirror equipped with reverse engineered Hard Light technology from the Vishkar Corporation, provided by by Lucio. This mirror lets him create barriers and shields, plus near identical Copies of himself. But also, after Winston figured out how Sombra modified Tracers Chronol Accelerator into a Translocator, he was given the prototype called ‘warping glass’, a small pocket sized mirror like device that allows Toshi to swap locations with one of his illusions.

Background/Bio: growing up, Toshi didn’t have a great life. His father was a founding member of Overwatch, Jack Morrison. When Toshi was four the Overwatch Base was attacked, and shortly before that his mother passed due to illness. With no one left in his immediate family, Toshi had only one person to go to, his godfather; Reinhardt Wilhelm. After that Reinhardt became the closest thing Toshi had to a father. Toshi had always wanted to be apart of Overwatch, but when he could it was disbanded.

-Game play-

Health: 250. 200 HP and 50 Shields.

Primary fire: Hardlight Mirror. He carries a Medium sized Mirror. He fires four small beams that converge into one large beam, this beam deals around 30-60 damage dependent on the relative distance to the opponent, dealing more damage the closer he is for around 5-10 seconds, but has no reload cool down. If the opponent survives, they will be marked with a ‘shard’. A character can only be marked twice, but Toshi can mark as many as he needs to, making for a total of twelve shards if he marks the enemy team twice. If he fires at an ally, they will be healed for the same amount. They will also be marked with a shard that heals for 10 damage every half a second for five seconds. With either an ally or enemy, the shards will vanish if they are eliminated.

Secondary fire: broken mirror. Cracks his mirror, this deals 100-150 damage to the opponent depending on their max health and how many shards they have. This can only used if an opponent is marked with a shard and will remove all shards from those who are marked.

             Voice cue: gaze into the looking Glass.

Ability 1: Illusion. Toshi can make illusory clones of himself or his allies, the player can actually choose which character he clones. The purpose of these clones is to distract the opponent, leaving them vulnerable to an attack. These illusions will follow their designated character and heal them for ten Health over five seconds if damaged, but the longer they heal the less they last. After ten seconds of healing they vanish. The Illusions will also vanish if Toshi is eliminated.

            Voice cue: try and guess.

Ability 2: Warping glass. Toshi can swap his current position with that of one of his clones

            Voice cue: seeing double are we!

Ultimate: Mirror barrier; Toshi unleashes a large burst of energy that not only gives all his nearby allies a shield worth 300 Health but restores them to full health and temporarily reflects damage for 7 seconds. It’s similar to Symmetra’s shield Generator and Lúcio’s Sound barrier.

            Voice cue: use them wisely.

Second ultimate: Rebound. Toshi surrounds himself in a barrier for seven seconds. Any and all damage directed at Toshi will be reflected back at them. It’s similar to Zarya barriers and Genji’s Reflect.

(Epic) steampunk: the steampunk show Toshi in bronze and brown 18th century clothing with a gear/ steampowered motif. His beanie is replaced with a pair of goggles with gear design and reflective lenses.

(Legendary; summer games): archery; this Skin depicts Toshi as an archer, complete with an orange shirt and blue lines, matching pants, white knee socks, and white sneakers. His master craftsman gloves are replaced with archery gloves, a bow, and a quiver full of arrows.

This skin has its own voice line interactions with Hanzo. Toshi; ‘I hope that my practice has payed off’. Hanzo; ‘we will see, won’t we?’. Implying that Hanzo was the one who taught him Archery.

(Holiday) Tinsel spinner: this Skin, turns his outfit a reflective gold and silver with a Bronze mirror. On the back of his coat, is a silver spider. This Skin pulls inspiration from the Tinsel Spider, an old European folk story.

(Halloween Terror) two face; This skin appears as a pallet swap of the Ringmaster Skin. in well-lit rooms or in maps that are set during the daytime it appears as a black suit, but in dark rooms or at night, a neon skeleton and skull design is seen on his suit and face. He appears to be holding a cane with a skull ornament adorning the top. This skin comes with a highlight intro called ‘Carnival of chaos’ which shows him doing a tumble roll bow. He drops in tumble rolling, when he lands he does a bow. It conveys a message of ‘I can be spontaneous and crazy, but also Graceful and poetic’

(Legendary; year of the rooster) red lion: this skin depicts Toshi as the Nian, a large red lion-like monster that hates loud noises, and the color red.

Emotes: Hello; *waves* or *give a two-finger salute* “Hello” “Hi” “sup”

Guess; Toshi creates a copy of himself that copies him.

        Patience; “I guess I’ll wait” *sits down cross legged, after a while He’ll shake his leg and be forced out* “bah, waiting’s boring”

Dad! *facepalms and shake his head disappointedly* “Dad, Please”

Dance: either a short irish jig or, if performed next to someone else’s, he’ll copy or perform a responding action. If done next to roadhog’s cabbagepatch Toshi will also cabbagepatch. If done next to Soldier’s dance emote, Toshi will groan and shake his head in disappointment. If done next to either Reinhardt waltz or Widowmaker’s balle, he’ll perform a similar dance. If done next to Pharah’s, he’ll bob his head and progressively bob faster, he’ll then put up the devil horn and bob even faster, until he starts bobbing uncontrollably and hits his head on the ground.

Victory poses: Chill *crossing his arms behind his head and crossing his legs*  

Highlight intros: skater. Toshi skates into the frame, skating around for a few seconds. The camera pans up, showing the he’s carved the Overwatch logo into the ice.

Carnival of chaos. It shows him doing a tumble roll bow. He drops in tumble rolling, when he lands he does a bow followed by a hat tip with his cane.

“Heroes Never Die” - Kurt & New Directions, Kurt/Blaine

continuing my new favorite thing of throwing Kurt and Blaine into videogames... the world could always use more heroes. :)

AKA the New Directions play Overwatch, and Kurt makes a new friend AKA I, Skivvy, would very much like to be at home playing Overwatch, but I’m not off work yet

I don’t know how many of you fellow klainers/gleeks play, but here are some references for anyone who doesn’t *know* the game and wants a little more clarification! you’ve probably seen some of these around tumblr?

“Kurt, I need heals!” 

“Then you shouldn’t have run in alone and then gotten stuck in an enclosed space where I can’t heal you, Sam,” Kurt sing-songs into his headset, keeping his wing-suited Mercy attached to Artie’s jet-packed Pharah as they fly around the point area they’re trying to keep control of in King’s Row. Besides the chance to get a good look at the beautiful, futuristic London panorama around them, sticking with Pharah allows Kurt a bird’s-eye view of who needs help. As Mercy, he can see Genji’s low health through the walls, Sam hiding from their enemies in a little room behind the point with a bright red and white plus symbol over him.

“This wouldn’t have happened if you’d switched characters like I asked. Don’t pick Genji if you don’t know what you’re doing,” Artie says, firing off a rocket in Sam’s general direction for no other reason than to express his bitterness.

Kurt shakes his head. Artie is obsessed with Genji, and skillfully plays Genji as his main character, but Sam had snagged him as soon as the game started and stubbornly refused to switch. 

“Like you never get hurt as Genji? I never get to practice him in matches because you always take him!” 

“I ALWAYS TAKE HIM BECAUSE HE’S MY MAIN! And you just jumped in there like an idiot--”

“I was going to knock out their Reinhardt from behind, I didn’t realize they'd gotten their Symmetra on the point, too!” Sam whines, frantically spamming the healing request button. Genji calls out over the team chat, “I need healing!”

“If you’d picked your own main instead of stealing someone else’s, you could’ve healed yourself,” Artie snaps, referring to Soldier: 76′s biotic field, a handy little bubble of healing energy that he can use on himself and his teammates. 

Ignoring Artie and his salty attitude, Sam’s Genji keeps calling out, “I need healing! I need healing! I need healing!”

Kurt presses the acknowledgement button (”Understood,” Mercy responds in her soft Swiss-German accent) and ignores the healing request. “BOYS! If you don’t shut up and focus, I’m not healing either one of you. Come on, we can win this one!”

“Can someone do something about this fucking Lucio?!” Santana snarls in frustration over the voice chat. 

Kurt turns briefly in the air to watch the enemy healer. Lucio has been a problem this entire game, deftly dodging their team’s fire and keeping his own team protected and mobile with well-timed speed and healing boosts. At the moment, he’s circling around on the point as though it’s a very small roller rink, attempting to capture it for his team, though the capture rate is slow because he’s on his own and keeps wall-riding off the point to dodge Santana’s Widowmaker. Kurt sees her sniper shots missing over and over, uncharacteristic for Santana and her main; her bullet streams come close to Lucio’s head but can’t land, and body shots are quickly made irrelevant by Lucio’s self-healing ability. Whoever’s playing him is good.

Santana swears when Widowmaker takes a couple hits from the enemy Torbjorn’s rapid-fire turret and backs off a little, Kurt quickly flying over to her for a quick healing boost before he links back up with Artie. “We’re running out of time and I can’t get him off the point, he’s too fast!”

“Where the hell is--? Oh, there she is,” Kurt mutters, hearing Tracer’s gleeful “Whee!” as Brittany speeds her towards the enemy Lucio. She blinks behind him, in front of him, behind him again, shooting all the time and maneuvering faster than Lucio can catch her. When he finally gets frustrated enough to try and push her back with a sound wave, Tracer rewinds, flipping behind him and taking him out before he can turn around. 

“Wooo!” Brittany yells, laughing before she blinks away again. “Got him, babe!”

“That’s my girl,” Santana sighs, resuming her careful attacks on the enemy Torbjorn’s and Symmetra’s arrangement of turrets.

Genji calls, “I need healing!”

The enemy Reinhardt, who Artie and Kurt have successfully kept distracted with rockets up until this point, finally turns and unleashes his special, ultimate ability. “HAMMER DOWN!!!” he shouts, throwing down said hammer and sending a burst of fiery energy rumbling through the ground to catch Tina’s D.Va and knock her off her feet as she tries to sneak up behind him.

“He solo-ulted me!” Tina wails, D.Va’s mech legs wiggling uselessly in the air like an overturned beetle as the Reinhardt marches ominously towards her. From overhead, Kurt can see D.Va’s tiny human figure flailing inside the mech suit, powerless to escape; it would be a comical sight if she weren’t about to take a Reinhardt hammer to the face. 

Genji calls, “I need healing!”

Artie and Kurt react in tandem, Artie shooting a concussive rocket to push the Reinhardt off his path and Kurt swooping down to Tina to give her a power boost in case the Reinhardt moves more aggressively than anticipated.

“Thanks!” D.Va chirps, a little thumbs-up icon appearing above her. Tina and Artie team up to take out the Reinhardt, pummeling him with shots from behind and breaking down his shield from the front until he’s finally eliminated. Tina’s D.Va turns her attention to the enemy McCree and Soldier: 76, and Artie and Kurt get back in the air to assist from above. 

Thirty seconds remain. 

“Enemy turret destroyed,” they hear Widowmaker announce in her smooth French accent, the sound merging nicely with Santana’s satisfied snickering in the background. 

“Symmetra and her turrets are out, too!” Brittany adds, activating a voice line so that Tracer calls out her cheerful, high-pitched signature: “Cheers, love! The cavalry’s here!”

Then, just as Kurt notices that the enemy Lucio, Symmetra, Torbjorn, and Reinhardt are storming back to the point way faster than they should be after dying so soon, Genji announces, “The enemy has a teleporter.” 

At Sam’s prompting, Genji also calls, “I need healing!”

“Crap - everybody go, we have to clear it out! Destroy the teleporter if you find it!” Kurt calls. The entire team moves as quickly as they can, including Sam’s Genji, who darts out of his hiding spot so that Kurt’s Mercy can finally heal him.

Then, several things happen all at once, beginning with Kurt’s least favorite words in the entire game. 

“IT’S HIGH NOON...” 

Kurt barely has time to react before the enemy McCree groans in agony, his deadly ult interrupted by a swift headshot that prevents him from taking anyone else out. 

“No the fuck it’s not,” Santana hisses as the rest of the team laughs and cheers over the voice chat. Kurt sees her Widowmaker jump down from her perch to join the team on the ground and start shooting at the enemies, who have all gathered on the point. 

Tina pops her ult, D.Va yelling, “NERF THIS!” and ejecting from her mech as it speeds towards the enemies and begins to self-destruct. 

That infuriating enemy Lucio pops his ult at the same time, jumping in the air and slamming his speaker-gun on the ground. His call of “LET’S BREAK IT DOWN!” accompanies an impenetrable shield around his entire team, protecting them so that D.Va’s exploding mech, normally a debilitating and unforgiving ult, merely pushes the enemy team away from her a little. 

“Nooo, that was perfect! That would’ve been Play of the Game!” Tina screams, D.Va immediately jumping back into her replacement mech to keep fighting. Tina’s so loud in her fury that it seems no one but Kurt notices the next horrifying announcement:

“I’VE GOT YOU IN MY SIGHTS...” 

“Shit, shit, shit!” Kurt releases his link from Artie’s Pharah, gliding out of the enemy Soldier’s eye line and away from the inevitable carnage. Soldier: 76 pops his ult, his shots landing with deadly power and accuracy on whoever he can see.

Kurt’s the only one who dodges the attack. A bright yellow, triangular icon pops up on his display, noting four teammates dead from Soldier’s ult. Then all five of his teammates are down as the enemy Reinhardt fulfills his inexplicable vendetta against Tina’s D.Va and pins her mech against a nearby wall, his teammates helping him finish her off. Kurt can see little skull icons hovering in the air where each of them fell. 

He hears his team’s rage and disappointment over the voice chat but quickly yells over them, “This is our last shot, get ready!” With three seconds remaining, his Mercy locks on to one of the death icons littering the point and swoops in, emerging from her hiding spot and shouting, “HEROES NEVER DIE!”

In a burst of yellow beams, all five teammates reappear on the point, rising from the dead to send the game into overtime. Artie’s Pharah leaps into the air and shouts, “JUSTICE RAINS FROM ABOVE!” as a barrage of rockets comes down on the enemy team, taking out three of them as the rest of the team cleans up the survivors. 

The enemy team doesn’t have enough time to get back to the point before overtime runs out. Kurt’s team recaptures the defense point, “VICTORY” appearing on the screen in huge glowing letters. The match is over. 

“Oh my GOD,” Artie yells, the whole team whooping and chattering about how close that was. Kurt breathes and presses a palm to his face. He loves being Mercy, but god, is it stressful sometimes.

The Play of the Game animation begins, and Kurt is delighted to see Mercy on screen, spreading her wings and raising her arm in her signature Resurrection move. As expected, the replay shows his game-saving, 5-person rez in the eleventh hour. 

“Kurt, that was so good!” Brittany exclaims, all of their teammates voting for Kurt as MVP in the end-game recap that shows the match’s strongest players. He even gets one of the enemy team’s players’ votes, though all the other votes go to their team’s healer, Lucio. 

Sam whistles. “Seriously saved our asses, wow...”

“Wouldn’t have been so close if we had a useful Genji...” Artie mutters. 

“Seriously, bro?”

“Get good or get over it, Sam,” cackles Tina.

Kurt says nothing. He’s with Artie on this one.

“For fuck’s sake... I’m over this for the night, see you losers tomorrow,” Santana says, she and Brittany quickly exiting the group. The others follow soon after, until Kurt is alone and pressing his fingers to his temples with his headphones resting around his neck. 

A bell rings as a little pop-up appears in the upper left corner of the TV, noting that Kurt has a friend request from Nightbird1995. His eyebrow quirks with interest. It’s the enemy Lucio. 

The accompanying message reads, GG! By that, I mean ‘great game’ instead of ‘good game.’ Or ‘glorious game!’ What an AMAZING Mercy!!! :) healer buddy?

Kurt grins. What a sweetheart, this Lucio. He accepts the request and sends back, You’re pretty good yourself! I’ll be honest, you were irritating. The mark of a great player :P

If the enemy isn’t frustrated you’re not playing hard enough lol

Agreed. Though I doubt you had as much screaming in your voice chat as I did. My friends are... a lot

Lol. Wanna team up for a few quick rounds? My friends left :(((

Kurt answers by sending an Overwatch invitation to Nightbird1995 and putting his headset back on.

“Hi, Mercy! Or shall I call you ‘Blackbird?’” Nightbird1995 asks, a buoyant tenor voice playing in Kurt’s headphones. The player’s icon is a jar of peanut butter. 

Kurt snorts at the picture, but doesn’t comment on it. “You can call me Kurt... Nightbird?” 

“Ah, no, that’s my superhero alter-ego. I’m Blaine.” 

Blaine... Hmm. “Superhero by day, skilled healer by night?”

“That’s me,” Blaine laughs. The sound is wonderful. “Actually, I can play a lot of characters, if you want to stick with healer. Or I can. I’m versatile.”

What a refreshing change from his usual play group. Kurt likes it. Kurt likes him.

“We’ll see what kind of group we get. Ready?”

“Let’s save the world!” Blaine exclaims, pulling a chuckle from Kurt as he puts them in the queue for a game.

I bought all the Overwatch LEGO sets. These are the best.

I love Overwatch. I love LEGO. When the two combined, I couldn’t resist buying all of the themed sets that LEGO released at the start of 2019.

If you’re not quite as enamored with this geeky peanut butter-and-jelly combination as I am, or if you’re on a limited budget and you want to know which sets are the best, I’m here to break it down for you. The list follows from best to worst, with a particular emphasis on the quality of the sets compared to Overwatch’s fantastic character design. Here we go!

The Best: Big Bastion ($50)

If you only get one Overwatch LEGO set, make it this one. The only one of the bunch not at least attempting to build to minifig scale gets a lot of freedom in its design, and it’s a lot better for it. This guy stands about ten inches tall, from the top of his rotating turret gun to the bottom of his surprisingly stable feet. He transforms into turret mode, his head lights up with a special LED brick (no external batteries necessary), and he gets a little buildable Ganymede (that’s the bird) to keep him company.

Bastion’s robotic character design is ideal for a big, beefy LEGO set, and little touches like the decals on his shoulder plates and knobbly accents on his legs really stand out. It looks fantastic on a shelf. The transforming design means you get a lot of flexibility in posing him, too, which is a problem with the tank set below.

The turret mode isn’t all that exciting in and of itself---LEGO isn’t as flexible as polygonal models, after all--and they couldn’t squeeze in a tank mode. But posing Bastion in his standard mode is great fun, and the build is surprisingly simple for such a complex result. It’s the hardest set of the series, and even so, I’d say a ten-year-old would have no problem getting through it.

The Next Best: D.Va and Reinhardt ($40)

The set that probably has people most excited is the combination of two tanks in one box, the Korean mech pilot D.Va and the geriatric German knight Reinhardt. And they’re definitely some of the highlights of the series. If you’re a fan of either character you’ll love the way they’ve been modeled here. Both the MEKA and Reinhardt’s armor look fantastic posed.

Both six-inch tanks come with minifigs: D.Va in her “baby” mobile form and Reinhardt in a miniature version of his armor, which can also be accessorized with a tiny hammer. That said, the scaling is weird: while both match the rest of the minifigs in the other sets, the mech and the armor are about twice the size that they should be at minifig scale---though I appreciate this was the only way to get them both inside with any detail. I do like the inclusion of a sans-helmet Reinhardt option, complete with his flowing snowy locks. The character is so expressive in the game it would be a shame to hide him behind a helmet all the time.

The gamer decals on the MEKA and the bits of livery on the armor are fantastic. But both knight and mech are very unbalanced, and need to be posed in specific ways to keep from tipping over. I wish Reinhardt came with some kind of shield, and D.Va’s mech has only one canon on each arm, instead of the distinctive triple rotating guns in the game. It’s the one sore spot in an otherwise fantastic translation of the game model. I also wish there was some way to secure D.Va inside the mech---she just kind of sits in there, rattling around whenever you move the model.

Even so, both were great fun to build. They’re ideal for desktop companions if you’d like to show off your gaming habits in LEGO form.

The Rest: Dorado Showdown ($30), Tracer vs. Widowmaker ($15), Hanzo vs Genji ($20)

The smallest three sets with minifigs have a focus on the stages themselves: Dorado, Gibraltar, and Hanamura, respectively. They’re also good choices if you want quick, easy builds with a bit of Overwatch flavor, without having to dedicate an hour or more to setting them up.

Among the three, Dorado takes the definite lead. This set includes Soldier 76, Reaper, and McCree, plus the hovertruck payload and a stage-themed arch and market stall. The elements really come together nicely, with minifig scale working well between all of them. The truck is particularly nice as a translation of the game model, with plenty of places to stick the minifigs for posed battles.

Next comes Tracer vs Widowmaker, the cheapest set of the whole line. There’s no scenery to be had between these two rivals, but they can duke it out over a nice rendition of the Gibraltar spaceship payload. The Tracer minifig in particular is a highlight, with her dual-wield pistols, mop head hair, and translucent “blink” trail.

Genji and Hanzo get a minifig recreation of their battle from the Dragons animated short. The Japanese castle interior is nice, but the inclusion of action pieces that shoot dragon-themed discs is kind of forced, and the Yakuza lackey minifig (the only one in the series not of a playable character) is unnecessary. You’re buying this for the great Shimada brothers minifigs.

The Ones To Skip: Watchpoint Gibraltar ($90) and Omnic Crisis Bastion ($25)

The biggest and most expensive set is Watchpoint: Gibraltar, a recreation of the game stage with no less than four minifigs. And these minifigs are popular heroes that many will want: Mercy, Pharah, a wonderful BigFig Winston, and a repeat Reaper with a special smoky shadowstep bottom option.

Unfortunately these figures are saddled with a huge and underwhelming spaceship and launch tower. The ship itself actually has some cool elements, like a pop-out deployment module, crew quarters, and pilot cockpit. But the spaceship at the end of the Gibraltar stage is never part of the actual game, so the massive 15-inch long shuttle feels unnecessary at best, as if LEGO just needed a big set piece for the most expensive Overwatch box on the shelf. (The Overwatch team dropship, the starting point of many maps, would have been a better choice.) 

The launchpad and tower, while having some nice high spots to stick Mercy and Pharah, are likewise mostly unnecessary. Maybe this set would have been better if it had been combined with the Tracer vs Widowmaker set, which includes the themed payload, as the manual none-too-subtly reminds you.

The minifigs are a bit of a mixed bag as well. Winston looks fantastic, but Mercy and Pharah are a bit simple, and Reaper can be had in a much cheaper set, sans the admittedly cool shadowstep feature. All in all, this is one to skip unless you want another rather generic LEGO spaceship or you just have to have Mercy, Pharah, or Winston---its price just isn’t justified by its weak connection to the games.

There’s one last set you won’t find on store shelves: Omnic Crisis Bastion. This much smaller, orange-skinned version of the cheerful robot is exclusive to Blizzard’s online merch store, and it comes with its own placard stand and Ganymede in a matching cardinal skin. This one fits in well with the D.Va and Reinhardt tanks at five inches high, though it’s still way too big to match minifig scale.

With no mode transform option, only two decals on the shoulders, and a high $25 price tag for just 182 pieces, Omnic Crisis Bastion is only for those who love the character but can’t find a place for the much bigger, better Bastion. I have to assume that, since it came out in October, Blizzard wanted a LEGO Overwatch set for its store before Christmas.

Omnic Crisis Bastion is an “exclusive,” and unlike the other widely-distributed sets that can be found in most retail stores stocking LEGO, it may be hard to find later. But even if it is, it won’t be worth the effort.

Minifig Breakdown

Once again I’ll go from best to worst.

Tracer is the face of Overwatch, so it’s good that they nailed her minifig (especially since it appears on all the retail LEGO boxes). Her spiny pistols are faithfully depicted with a few translucent pieces, and the “blink” effect on her backpack looks great and lets her balance while holding the heavy guns. The custom spiky hair is spot-on. LEGO could have left her legs plain orange without much grumbling, but they added a few splashes of paint for straps.

The Winston BigFig is a close second. The Hulk-style figure is a natural fit for his gorilla frame, and both Winston’s torso and arms get custom moldings. His tesla gun and jetpack are both made from only stock pieces with decals, but they’re still very good approximations of the game models. Winston’s also the only tank that fits in with the scale of the other minifigs.

Genji and Hanzo are probably the best minifigs in terms of accessories. Genji’s iconic helmet is rendered well---no face underneath, so you can’t peek. Genji gets his sword and several shurikens, plus a scabbard. Hanzo gets his bow and a quiver for his back, with the single flesh toned arm and custom hair with bandanna insert being highlights.

For a character that’s little more than a cowboy with a few bits of armor, McCree looks great, with excellent painted patterns on both the chest and legs. I love the little detail of a grey left hand, since McCree’s arm is robotic. I just wish they’d given him a custom hat with his Blackwatch band...or painted a tiny “BAMF” on his belt buckle (though I can guess why they left it off).

The Reapers are pretty good: one included in the Dorado set, another in Gibraltar with an optional shadowstep bottom. Granted, it’s hard to get Reaper wrong. Even the oversized shotguns, much bigger than the game model, fit with Reaper’s ridiculous character design. But it is the start of a trend in overscaled guns with these figs.

The “baby” D.Va minifig is also simple, but effective. Her custom hair and headset work well---note the grey and pink paint. And while her gun isn’t custom, it’s all that’s needed to approximate her in-game pistol. A secondary face, complete with bubblegum, is a great inclusion.

Widowmaker’s minifig is serviceable, with a nice custom hair mold that includes paint for her visor. But I wish the visor could fold down---it’s not like LEGO hasn’t done this before. The sniper rifle made out of stock pieces is oversized and looks nothing like her curvy, expandable gun. I know toy guns aren’t a huge focus for LEGO, but it doesn’t even have a rifle stock, just a handle from a smaller gun piece. Widow gets a hook, but no line or separate piece for her to hang from, a la the Spider-Man LEGO sets. 

Soldier 76 suffers from some of the same problems. He’s painted well with good contrasting colors, but his multi-piece gun is ridiculously massive. It’s bigger than the sniper rifle or Pharah’s rocket, and again, looks nothing like Soldier’s intricate machine gun. This character really deserves a custom weapon.

Reinhardt’s minifig is almost unnecessary, since he’s always in his armor. But perhaps being aware of the odd scale of the tank set, LEGO painted a tiny version of his armor on the minifig and includes instructions for a scale-appropriate hammer. Still, seeing Rein as the same size as D.Va and Widow just looks odd. At least they included a hair piece for when you want to see his face outside of the helmet. The tank set also has a spare Overwatch team medallion, as seen in the Honor and Glory short.

Pharah is a let-down. The shoulder pads and attached “wings” don’t do a good job approximating her flight suit---these look like pieces recycled from a Nexo Knights set, with none of the fins or pieces her Iron Man-style getup really needs. The helmet looks good, but there’s no sign of Pharah’s hair or distinctive beads. And finally, there’s no way to elevate her, no jet effects. How can justice rain from above when she’s on the ground? At least her rocket is both correctly-sized and shoots a tiny capsule. 

Mercy is easily the most disappointing of the Overwatch minifigs. The wings attached to her backpack are stock “angel” wings, not the high-tech gliders from the game. Her caduceus staff is just a stick and a hook. And her skin tone face printed on an all-black head looks washed out and doesn’t match the colors of the rest of her outfit. Nice paint on the chest and leg pieces can’t save it. This figure is a big stumble for one of the game’s most visible characters.

If these complaints sound like nit-picks, well, they are. But in a game with an overwhelming amount of attention paid to character design, the Overwatch minifigs would inevitably be the focus of their LEGO sets. They range from great to embarrassing, so if you’re trying to buy a set with your favorite character included, choose accordingly.
