“The Mazandaran of legend was inhabited by a population that was different from other Iranians: godless magicians, they were invincible to other humans, conquerable only by the power of God.”
Not gonna lie folks that sounds pretty damn villainous. (Well they're supposed to be villains in legend soooo)
“He possesses great physical strength and is skilled in sorcery and necromancy. He destroys the army of Kay Kavus by conjuring a dark storm of hail, boulders, and tree trunks using his magical skills.”
Necromancy?! Why am I surprised, I really shouldn't be.
“At the end, Rostam slays Div-e Sepid and uses his heart and blood to cure the blindness of the king and the captured Persian heroes.”
Interesting, so it has healing properties...
@innerchorus still in the process of getting through the links you provided (thank you so much by the way!) and found these rather interesting. The unambiguously villainized view definitely puts the daeva king closer to Zahhak than the clan but maybe if I tweak things a little... esp since the colour white is associated with the king and white is a significant colour in Marda culture (Marda? Mazandaran? okay that's a fucking stretch and even I know it)
I don't think I'll get anywhere with this anytime soon yet but it's... interesting. Definitely putting a pin on this.

Mazandaran links / info, because it's easier to put it all in a post than comments. So the Mazandaran of the Shahnameh (what Tanaka is referencing) is not necessarily the same as Mazandaran province, which was actually known historically as Tabaristan. The location of the Mazandaran of legend is unknown. To quote Wikipedia: 'It is not clear where Mazandaran was located – various places have been suggested. Some scholars believe that Mazandaran was a region in India, others believe that Mazandaran is in the Levant or Egypt, but there is no consensus between scholars.'
The two sections of the Shahnameh in which Mazandaran is mentioned also do not match up. See the 'Mazandaran province in literature' section here. The Tamisheh mention of the first one would actually place it in modern Mazandaran province. But the second (which seems more like the one Tanaka is evoking) instead seems to indicate a land to the west of Iran. There's some more detailed writing on the geography of the Shahnameh here.
In terms of ArSen, I've always assumed it's somewhere within the borders of Pars. The plains of Mazandaran were also said to be the place where Kaykhusraw's son crossed blades with his father, which I think lends further support to it being located in Pars itself. I suppose it's very possible that the situation mirrors real life in that what was once known as Mazandaran now goes by a different name?
(Incidentally, I used Tabaristan as the place where Isfan's mother's parents were born in my headcanon / backstory for her!).
