Kelp Forests and trinkets
Hello lovelies!
My brain is very empty but it is Mermay and I had to! Because somfte! Please enjoy!
Oh, and Kuri I love you, thank you for Beta reading, you are a gem!
On Ao3 here    For the @thepassifloradiscord Merweek
Normally, Geralt would roam in the Kelp Forests of old. He enjoyed the sunlight filtering down from the surface, the broken off rays of light shimmering between the kelp's thick leaves.
It is not without its dangers, but that is why he is there, to guard their little reef. His folk rely on him to keep the dangers at bay, and he does so to the best of his ability. His body wears the scars to prove it; bitemarks, and sometimes even claw marks from surface creatures.
Usually, it is not so bad. It heals up fast enough when he is allowed to rest back home. But one of his side-fins took a bad beating a few years back, and every now and then it pains him. It is healed, as well as it can be with being torn into pieces, but sometimes when he makes a sharp turn, or when he gives chase after some pest trying to eat his family, he feels it for a long time after.
The Kelp Forest is calm. Their stems sway in that soothing way of theirs. Dancing, Jaskier called it once, and Geralt thinks that, yes, maybe they are. At least when Jaskier sings to them, they do.
That is how they met actually.
Geralt was patrolling the outer edges of the Kelp Forest, when a voice reached his ears. Distance was tricky sometimes, but it sounded close. Geralt had followed it, only to find Jaskier singing to himself as he sat on the edge of a big rock formation, his scales glittering in the sunlight.
At the time, Geralt had been pissed about it because the singing had attracted a rather large shoal of Razers, a small but sharp toothed fish that were too nosy (and hungry) for their own good.
Jaskier, the idiot, apparently did not yet know what it meant to be out in the open like that. While singing in itself is an innocent activity, and usually a good strategy for placating whales or even sharks, it can be a bitch when his folk were unable to read their surroundings and attract attention such as that.
They were not in mortal danger, but would have been had Geralt not stepped in and not only shut Jaskier up, but pulled him into the relative safety of the kelp. After that near-death experience, he took to following Geralt, watching his every move, *singing* until Geralt finally relented and admitted they were friends.
It took even more time for Jaskier to nestle himself into the reef, but no time at all to make sure that there was a place for him in Geralt's home.
Living together came surprisingly easily; his family took to Jaskier like algae to a bone.
And since then, they have been living like that for years. The cave system Geralt had chosen was perfect for inhabitants more than himself. Maybe he had hoped one day to fill those rooms with life, despite the aching loneliness when he originally chose it. Maybe Jaskier had already known, and that is why it was so easy to slip into Geralt's life, once he found the door.
This time, he is making the rounds on his own. It is a longer route this time because his brother, who would usually meet up with him halfway, had to stay home.
Eskel mentioned something about a 'hatchling' that needed his help in the message sent earlier, but Geralt knows full well it's because said 'hatchling' is in fact a full grown mer who had been courting Eskel for a full year already.
If he had the guts to do it, Geralt would probably attempt courting too. Sometimes when he is on patrol, he would spot something Jaskier would like. A pretty shell, smooth sea glass, sometimes even a pearl.
He has a little pouch of things he has found. He has only once ever given Jaskier something from those treasures. The smile Jaskier gave him stayed with him for days.
A few days later, he would be the one who let someone else take patrol. Geralt had made up his mind just the night before. Yes, he and Jaskier live together, do pretty much everything together, but there is one thing he is missing.
The one thing yesterday had given him a taste of. Jasker had fallen asleep while clinging to his arm, his lips pressed against Geralt's shoulder. And Geralt would do anything to get that again.
So this morning he sent Roach with a message, the little sea horse speeding off to Eskel's home. Payback for flirting instead of working, he thought, as he collected another armful of seagrass.
Jaskier won't be back for a while yet, so he should at least have an hour or two to finish up the first step of his plan. When he decides he has enough seagrass, he settles into a nook in the cave wall, weaving the grass together so it becomes thick and soft. Perfect to nest on.
It takes some time, some swearing, and some more gathering of sea grass when he butchers a few too many to keep going, but when he is done, he has new, bigger bedding for his nest.
There is just about enough time to put it into place when Jaskier returns, calling down the halls to announce his arrival. It makes Geralt's blood pump with nervous energy, and before he can change his mind, he rummages through his hidden bag of courting gifts, and picks out a shark tooth.
As per usual, Jaskier bursts into the room, telling Geralt about his day, arms waving and fins swirling with expression. Sometimes, Geralt feels like he could watch him speak forever.
"What's that?" Jaskier interrupts himself, mid story, finally picking up on what Geralt is hiding in his hands.
Geralt feels his face heat up, and he offers up the little treasure to Jaskier with an open palm.
"Found this when patrolling," Geralt mumbles. "Thought you might like it."
Jaskier's smile is blinding. He picks it up, the very tips of his fingers brushing against Geralt's palm. There is no reason for that to send a shiver through him, down to his tail fin, but it does.
Jaskier studies the tooth this way and that, holding it up in the light as he asks what kind of animal it came from, if you can tell the creature's age from it, what this spot right here means, would this be better as a knife or as a necklace, and so on.
Geralt answers all of his questions, and when he quietly offers it to Jaskier as a keepsake, he is rewarded with a kiss on the cheek. As much as he had decided that today would be the day asked Jaskier to be his, he can't fight off the nervous grumble at that.
Jaskier just smiles and swims back to his own nest to place the gift somewhere safe until he has decided its fate.
As soon as the other mer is gone, Geralt finds his little bag of treasures again. This time, he chooses three very small pearls he found. Rolls them between his fingers, feeling their smooth surface, letting them ground him.
He wonders if he can give them to him just like that? Or maybe he should save them, give the pretty rock instead, the one that glitters when turned.
Before he can make up his mind, Jaskier returns, words exploding out of his mouth again with ideas for the tooth. It has Geralt smiling, glowing inside with how his gift was so well received and with so much enthusiasm.
He doesn't notice himself floating closer until Jaskier turns silent, looking up at him with quiet wonder.
"Geralt?" he asks, quietly for once, eyes big and questioning.
"If I told you I picked you dozens of courting gifts, but lacked the courage to give them to you..." Geralt starts, but trails off. The naked hope on Jaskier's face, it catches him off guard somehow.
"Yes?" Jaskier whispers, inching closer too.
He blushes, even his gills turning a pretty pink, and Geralt just wants to reach out and touch him.
"If I collected them to give them to you... would you accept them?" Geralt braves, and when Jaskier's smile wavers, when his chin wrinkles and his brow furrows, Geralt thinks for a moment he read it all wrong.
"Can I show you something?" Jaskier whispers, and when Geralt nods, Jaskier reaches for his hand.
He is guided out of his own room and down the hall, to where Jaskier has his nest. He should be used to Jaskier's tactile nature, but he still isn't. It always surprises him when Jaskier reaches out, when he offers reassurance or seeks comfort.
As soon as they are inside, Jaskier lets go and swims up to one of the upper shelves. His nest has always been a mess, full of things that Jaskier finds interesting and beautiful, his ornaments and instruments strewn about the room, mixed with the little corals growing here and there. Jaskier returns with a sheath, and inside it a whale bone, carved into a knife.
It is beautiful, if a little crooked, but wonderfully decorated with runes and carvings.
"Where did you find this?" Geralt asks with wonder.
"Lambert helped me make it. Or, well. He made it mostly, didn't let me near any of the sharp objects."
Geralt snorts and Jaskier smiles, coming closer and pointing out the finer details on the knife.
"Yennefer helped me with this bit. Said it would help keep you safe. And this one, Ciri put it there."
Geralt admires the handiwork, recognizing the runes and symbols. The one Ciri had put on it was a charm to lead him home.
"And this one?" Geralt asks, pointing to an inscription along the top blade.
"If I told you this is a courting gift, would you accept it?" Jaskier whispers, mirroring what Geralt had asked before.
Gently, Geralt sheathes the knife and puts it down. Then he reaches forward, cradling Jaskier's face in his hands, leaning forward.
"There would be no higher honor," Geralt whispers, and Jaskier's face crumbles again. He looks devastated, and Geralt doesn't understand it, but then the mer is throwing his arms around Geralt's shoulders, pressing close.
He tucks his head in under Geralt's chin, the hands that had been cradling him now holding him close instead, and Geralt finally, finally feels whole.
"Beloved," Geralt whispers, and Jaskier makes a pained sound and presses closer.
"I have had that knife for months," Jaskier admits into Geralt's collarbones, lips grazing the sensitive skin there.
"I have collected courting gifts for years."
They stand there for a long time, just holding each other. Then they hold each other while lying on Jaskier's nest, barely fitting together even with their tails curled around each other.
"I had another question for you," Geralt murmurs into Jaskier's hair eventually, and the mer looks up at him.
"I... uh....made my nest bigger...."
Maybe it is too soon to ask? It feels soon, but also oh so very late. But Jaskier is smiling at him, adjusting them so that he is looking down at Geralt, bracketing him in between his arms.
"Would you share it with me?"
Jaskier kisses him. Soft and lingering and warm and perfect, one of his fingers slowly dragging along Geralt's cheek bone. When they part, Jaskier is giving him another of those blinding smiles.
"There would be no higher honor," Jaskier replies, leaning in for another kiss. Geralt melts into it, losing himself in Jaskier, in the sensations of finally, finally being close the way he has always wanted but never dared.
Too scarred or too broken to think someone like Jaskier would ever want him, but here they are. It has barely reached midday, but it is hard to do anything other than hold each other close and trade kisses.
Eventually, Geralt's stomach growls, and they have to get up and get food. Now that it is allowed, Geralt can't stop touching him.
Brushing their fins together, resting a hand on Jaskier's lower back, thumbing away food from the corner of Jaskier's mouth... He can't stop.
They wrestle, which dissolves into cuddling, into kissing, and it is like all those years of waiting has led them up to this. The first touch is tentative, hands exploring and kisses deepening.
When Jaskier presses closer, presses them together, Geralt can't help the low moan slipping out.
"I thought the courting came first," Geralt teases, but Jaskier won't have it. Not entirely, at least.
"I have spent years courting you in my head. I want this. Please."
Despite those years of mental courting, it is too early for the final step. Maybe this will all fall apart in time, maybe it will turn out they won't be able to stand each other within a few months.
Jaskier just laughs when he says it, and Geralt doesn't believe it either. But for Jaskier, he wants this to be done right.
Day by day passes as he empties his courting bag. Trinkets and gifts and findings are given, and Jaskier accepts each and every one.
Until Jaskier is gone for two full days, returning with a golden ring for Geralt.
The inscription matches the one on the knife, and what Geralt had called him that first night.
Beloved.
Geralt still makes his rounds in the Kelp Forest. He doesn't hesitate to pick up the treasures he finds now. He brings them home to his husband, his mate, presenting each and every one as a gift.
Jaskier calls him a romantic. Geralt calls him home.

Swim - Sidon x mermaid!reader
Tumblr media
“Headcanons about sidon with a mermaid s/o (she/her) please” - @thereal-agentrose
oooh! interesting! i haven’t written anything for a mermaid reader since my hp fandom days, so this is super exciting for me! *insert wild flashbacks to mermay and the merweek my old friends and i accidentally started in the fandom i used to be a part of*
i hope you enjoy <3
y/n - your name
Sidon’s favorite thing to do with you is swim
and he especially loves it when the two of you explore underwater
he’ll swim with you for hours on end, exploring every underwater cave you manage to find
you can’t climb up the falls
but he’s more than happy to have you ride on his back when he’s ascending them
the stories he shares about his land travels are so detailed
and it feels as if you’ve been there before
he oh so desperately want’s to take you to his favorite places
but considering you only have fins…
that’s a problem
a lot of the time, you’ll share picnic meals at the Bank of Wishes
Sidon’s more than happy to prepare the meals to bring
and if you’re out late, he’ll set up a campfire to roast fish and/or any other food you may like
he’s so entranced by your tail
the way it shines and shimmers in the sun
and even in the moonlight
sometimes you’ll catch him staring
and it’s SO cute
“Sorry, I just can’t help it. The way your fins glimmer… it’s beautiful!”
late night swims are common
and if he misses a few meetings the next day from how late he was getting home, he doesn’t seem to mind
Muzu is furious about it though… as always
he shares stories about you to everyone who will listen
and the Zora Guard knows to watch over the river and the surrounding areas for your safety
when Sidon is busy, you like to travel
you find the best trinkets to give to him
and the look on his face when you surprise him:
priceless
“Oh, y/n! These are beautiful! Thank you!”
you bet he’s showing them off when he returns to the domain
all the children ask about you
and Sidon has so much to say
he does plan to have you visit Zora’s Domain at some point
he’s just trying to figure out the best way to bring you
because swimming up the falls that flow from the Luminous Stone floor can be tricky, especially with another person
but until then, he’s so happy to spend time with you on whatever bank side you find yourselves at
he loves you so very much
and he’s so happy to have someone that shares his passions for the water

four little words
MERWeek 2021 - Prompt: Long Time No See
read it on ao3!
“You will let me see my daughter!” The receptionist just smiled plaintively and nodded at Hannah’s outcry, her hand reaching for the phone that kept ringing.
“Ma’am, she’s just come out of surgery. She won’t be ready for—“
“You don’t get to tell me—“
Hannah was cut off by an asari slamming both hands into the hospital counter.
“I’m looking for Liara T’Soni. Asari. About as tall as I am. Biggest fucking blue eyes in the galaxy. Should be with that stupid redhead, Commander Shepard.”
The offense that had been stirring within Hannah died as the asari said her daughter’s name.
“We don’t have any asari in this hospital ma’am,” the receptionist said, clearly stressed as her phone kept ringing. “Now if you’ll give me one moment I need to answer that call.”
“She’s not being treated, puckerfuck. She’s with her girlfriend.”
“Yes, just one moment—“
“You touch that fucking phone and I will remove your fucking hand.”
The receptionist pulled her hand back.
The asari smiled, but it was more like a baring of teeth.
“Good choice. Liara T’Soni. Commander Shepard.”
“First name?”
“Of who? Me? The Commander? I don’t fucking know. She’s the Savior of the fucking galaxy. How’s that for a first name?”
“It’s Nova.”
The asari turned to Hannah, and Hannah had to say that her attention was really rather startling. The burning of a thousand stars was held within her eyes. “What did you fucking say?”
“Her name is Nova. Nova Shepard.”
“And who are you.” It was not a question so much as a command.
Hannah stuck out a hand in greeting. “Admiral Hannah Shepard. Her mother.”
“Aethyta.” The asari did not shake her hand, just turned back to the receptionist. “Well, you heard her. Now tell me where Liara is.”
“What relation are you to Miss T’Soni?”
“It’s Doctor T’Soni. And I’m her father.” Father? Hannah’s mind hung on the word.
The receptionist nodded though, either knowing something she didn’t, not hearing, or not caring. The latter was most likely, especially as she eyed the ringing phone again.
“Of course. As I was telling Admiral Shepard here though, Commander Shepard is coming out of surgery. She needs to rest. Doctor T’Soni is the only one allowed into her room as of current.”
“Listen here: I’ve had enough of this bull--” The receptionist reached for the phone.
Aethyta’s face twisted into a snarl, body tensing and arms starting to glow blue.
Hannah placed her hand on the receptionist’s, stilling it on the handle. “I think it would be wise for you to tell us where to find our daughters. Otherwise, you’re going to have a pissed-off Admiral and Matriarch in the waiting room. And I don’t think you want that. Now do you?” Hannah squeezed the receptionist’s hand a bit too tight.
The girl’s eyes widened at the unspoken threat and yanked her hand back. “Room 308.”
“Thank you, dearest.”
Hannah took off from the desk at a brisk pace, knowing that her daughter was behind one of these doors. She didn’t care if Aethyta was following her, though she knew it was likely that the asari was a few steps behind her.
Finally coming to the correct door, her hand rested inches above the door, waiting to knock, but hesitating. What if Nova didn’t want to see her? What if the girl beyond this door was not the girl she had known before? That was a silly question though. Of course, Nova was different. After this war, they all were.
“Are you just going to stare at the door or are you going to open it, hun?”
Hannah glanced up to Aethyta, who stood with both arms crossed, one hip jutting out. Her brown eyes seemed to take all of her in with one long look that stretched from toes to head. Hannah’s face burned.
“Yes, of course,” she mumbled, and gave two polite taps. There was no answer. “Perhaps they’re both sleeping.”
Aethyta scoffed and lightly pushed Hannah out of the way before barging through the door.
Hannah, frowning, followed her through.
“Father?” Another asari, presumably Liara, started out of her chair, where she had been tucked up, likely sleeping.
Hannah could hear the gravel of Aethyta’s voice in return, but the words were drowned out as she saw Nova laying there in the hospital bed. Her face was a mess of scrapes, her hair burned away in some places, and she was covered in bandages, but Nova looked…peaceful. Calm. Content.
Hannah covered her mouth to stifle a sob, using the other to take Nova’s hand in her own. “My baby girl…”
Nova’s eyes fluttered open, revealing the matching set to Hannah’s own. “Momma?”
“I’m here,” Hannah whispered, tears streaming down her face. Momma. She had called her Momma, as she hadn’t since she was a small child. “I’m here, baby girl.”
Nova’s eyes closed again, settling back into that peaceful expression. “I missed you.”
“I missed you too.” She could hardly get the words out. When was the last time she had held her daughter’s hand? Seen her face in something more than a holo-projection? Three years ago, Hannah had thought she would never have the opportunity again. And then by some miracle, she had come back to Hannah. Yet still, they had not seen each other. Just a few short messages between them. A call that had lasted less than a minute before Nova set course to die. Again.
“I love you Momma…” The four little words were sleepy, her tongue thick with whatever medicine that was keeping her out of pain. But Hannah’s heart still squeezed.
“I love you too, baby girl. I love you too…”

“Yo, Shepard, can we talk to you for a second?” Jack’s voice came across the comms. “Sure thing. Did someone break something?” Shepard tried to tease the biotic. “Not yet, but I can’t promise not to break the cheerleader's arm if she doesn’t stop tapping her fingers on the console in a condescending way.”
Shepard sighed and put down the armor she was cleaning. She made her way to the elevator. “Hey Edi, if anyone is actually about to kill each other, let me know.”
“Of course, Shepard. If I were to inform you each time Jack complained about Operative Lawson, I believe you wouldn’t have any free time.”
“True enough,” Shepard chuckled. The AI was really growing on her.
Shepard exited the lift and turned into the mess hall, and was surprised to see her entire ground crew sitting around the long table. She glanced at Garrus, but he gave nothing away, other than popping a mandible out to the side in a sarcastic half-grin. “What’s all this about?”
“Shepard, it seems the crew have been discussing our current course of action,” Miranda started.
“You mean, our current course of non-action?” Shepard cut in.
“Yes,” Miranda said slowly. “Garrus has been adamant that he has tried to persuade you not to return to the Alliance.”
“He has, and as I told him, I’ve made up my mind. It’s something I have to do.”
“You don’t have to do shit,” Jack countered.
“You could go to the Council, Shepard. You’re a spectre, with spectre authority. They’ll be just as displeased as the Alliance, but they can use that authority to ride out the storm. The Alliance is just going to lock you up. Or worse. You don’t deserve that.” By the time Tali finished, she was wringing her hands and bouncing slightly on her feet.
Shepard looked down, “Listen, I appreciate your concern. But if I don’t go and take the fall, the political fall out will be detrimental to the Alliance. I might be a Spectre, but everyone in the galaxy knows where I came from.”
There was a horribly awkward silence in the room.
“I promise, I won’t let it affect any of you. Your names will all stay out of the report, and I will be adamant about the fact that I went there alone.”
“I could give two shits about what other people think. I still think you should take me up on the piracy thing,” Jack said, crossing her arms and nearly pouting. Shepard nearly laughed at the stance. Jack looked back at her. “It’s a nice ship. Stealth drives and all. Perfect opportunity wasted.”
“She’s not wrong,” Kasumi said, appearing out of thin air next to Jack.
“FUCKING SHIT!” Jack said, “God damn it I hate it when you do that.”
Kasumi blew her a kiss as she disappeared.
“Siha, it appears you are not willing to change your mind,” Thane said as calmly as ever.
“I find it admirable,” Samara nodded her head.
“I think falling on your sword to protect the very people who put you in the situation, the same people who expect you to follow orders blindly and not take responsibility for their own actions, isn’t exactly admirable,” Garrus said darkly, still leaning back in his chair.
Shepard knew he was angry. She didn’t blame him. But she kept a cool mask of command on her face. “I’m not changing my mind.”
“Then we would ask for a few days dry-docked. For repairs,” Miranda said slowly.
“Repairs? I thought we were nearly done with repairs. You all have been working around the clock on the Normandy.”
“Yes, well, there’s a few things we could take a look at on the outer hull. It’d be safer on the ground. We thought perhaps, since we’re close, we could stop here.” Miranda pulled out a map and pointed to a spot on the planet below. “We’ve actually been planning this since we left the Bahak System.”
Shepard blew out a small stream of air.
“The crew needs a break, Shep,” Garrus said.
“And time to say goodbye,” Tali added.
“Fine,” Shepard said. “You have anything to add Joker?”
“Not since you ever so reasonably agreed, no. Setting a landing trajectory now. Ready EDI?”
“Ready, Jeff.”
--------------------------------------------------------------
Shepard was sitting at her desk, finishing the last of the reports she had. She’d always hated filling out reports. Now though, she thought she might end up missing even this. She wasn’t sure what the Alliance had planned for her. A trial? Jail time? A harsher sentence? She didn’t think they’d hand her over to the Batarians, but the thought was still there in the back of her mind. When she had mentioned it to Garrus, he said he’d be there breaking her out before she even reached a Batarian system. And she hadn’t argued.
Just as she thought of him, he walked through her cabin doors. “Done with those reports yet?” he drawled.
“This is the last one,” she said as she signed off and sent it. “Done.” She blew out a breath and stretched her arms above her head. She looked over at Garrus, and saw he was carrying a duffle bag, and was dressed in shorts and a Turian style t-shirt. She couldn’t help but chuckle, “I know you’re not on duty, but that’s a little informal. Aren’t you freezing?”
“I am freezing my ass off Shep, but I won’t be for long. Let’s go.”
“Onto the surface?”
“Yeah, where else? I’m not letting you spend your last shore leave in this cabin.”
“Hmmm,” she said suspiciously.
“Here,” he said as he threw the duffle at her. “Put these on.”
Shepard opened the bag and rose her eyebrows at him, “I can’t tell if this is practical, or if you just want me in a bikini.”
Garrus laughed, throwing his head forward and shaking it slightly. “Maybe it’s both?” He took out the sunscreen from her bag. “And don’t forget this.”
“Do you need some too?” she asked as she started spraying it on.
He shook his head. “The sun and radiation would have to be a hell of a lot stronger for me to need something like that. Palaven’s sun throws a lot more than this one.”
She nodded, “All right, all right Mr. Tough Guy, I got it.” She stripped off her civvies and threw on the bikini and sun dress. She put her hair in a braid that came over her shoulder. “All right, let’s do this.” She wouldn’t have planned a vacation. It wouldn’t have felt right. But her crew planning it, or needing it? That was a different story. And she was grateful.
They walked throughout the empty ship towards the cargo bay doors. “Where is everybody?” she asked.
“Already down there,” he said. “I think they were excited.”
Shepard stepped off the ship and was shocked. It was stunningly beautiful. It reminded her of when her parents had taken her to Jamaica once when she was young. “Wow,” she said softly. There was nothing within many kilometers of them. Not a soul in sight other than their ship and crew. “A private beach?”
Kasumi walked up to her with a small cooler, “Take your pick, Shep,” she said with a smile. There were beer and wine coolers. Shepard took one and thanked Kasumi. “The Dextro beers are all over by Tali,” Kasumi said before she skipped away.
"She’s even in a cloak on beach day,” Garrus rumbled, wiggling his brow plates at her.
Shepard laughed and walked towards Tali, “Go get a beer, big guy.”
“SHEEPPHHEEERRDD,” a loud voice boomed from a ways down the beach. Shepard looked down and saw Grunt splashing through the water with a small pistol, shooting at fish. “This is fun, heheh,” he said to himself as he picked up a fish he had somehow managed to shoot.
“Aww,” Zaeed said sarcastically before rolling his eyes. The man was sitting on a lounging chair with 5 beer cans on the sand around him. He laid back, closing his eyes before saying, “Good day Shepard. Good day.”
Joker was sitting next to the man with his eyes shut as well. “If I get a sunburn, I’m blaming you.”
Shepard threw her sunscreen at him. “If you get sunburned, you’ll worry EDI.”
“Har-har,” he said grumpily as he started spraying the sunscreen.
Thane was down the beach further, on the opposite end of Grunt Shepard noticed, showing Samara something that resembled Tai Chi. Actually, Shepard was pretty sure it was Tai Chi. She could still remember all the moves from when she took classes aboard her mother’s starship as a kid. She joined them silently, and allowed herself to meditate peacefully.
Once she’d had enough, she stopped, unsure of how much time had passed. Samara and Thane gave her small smiles as she walked away. She found Garrus was shooting blanks with a sniper rifle into the trees. Suddenly, Shepard saw the shimmer of failed shields and Kasumi’s cloak came down. “Damn!” the thief swore. “How in the hell did you know where I was that time?”
Garrus shrugged, “A gentlemen never tells.”
Tali swooped in from behind and jumped up to grab at his visor. “I’ll give you two guesses,” she said as she inspected it.
“Hey!” Garrus said, in a more shocked tone than Shepard would have expected. “Give that back,” he said as he pushed down on the Quarians helmet, reaching up so the visor was far out of her reach.
“Alright Garrus, no visor,” Kasumi said as she disappeared.
Garrus held the visor in one hand and aimed with the other. It took 10 seconds before he placed his next shot, and Kasumi’s shields went down again. Kasumi grumbled and switched on her cloak again.
Garrus’ eyes went wide and he hunched over his weapon slightly. Shepard heard him make a small noise of satisfaction before pulling the trigger.
“Oh, you’re good, Archangel,” Kasumi purred as she sauntered up to him. “I can see why you’re into him, Shep,” Kasumi called over to her.
Shepard just waved back with a grin and kept walking down the beach. There was a slight bend and suddenly she could see Mordin by the water, bent over looking at something. As she approached, she realized he was poking around some kind of sea creature with a stick. She stood next to him quietly as he observed it. “At first, wasn’t looking forward to ‘beach day’,” he said with air quotes. “Looked forward to comradery of course, but can get that on ship, or in lab. Surprising results. Thoroughly enjoying discovering new marine wildlife.” She saw his eyes flick back towards the sand. “Perhaps will try hand at fossils and shells next.”
Shepard smiled. As Mordin continued searching the shallow waters, Shepard started searching for shells on the beach. When she found what she thought must be the most beautiful one on the beach, she walked back over to him and handed it out to him.
“Ah!” he exclaimed, turning towards her and taking the shell. “How interesting! Gastropoda, free of inhabitants. Periostracum still slightly spongy, not old. Whorl, apex, aperture all typical. Extremely symmetrical. Red and orange in color, unsure of internal structuring.”
Shepard waited patiently as he continued his analysis until he stopped suddenly. He looked down at her and took a deep breath. “Beautiful. Thank you, Shepard.” He put the shell in one of his lab coat pockets.
She rose a brow, “That’s rather sentimental for you, isn’t it doctor?”
He shook his head, “Sometimes, sentimentality - appropriate. No point to life without the enjoyment of it.”
Shepard smiled at him. “Some friends make that exceedingly easy to do so.”
Mordin seemed genuinely taken aback, but nodded enthusiastically. “Indeed, they do.”
Legion walked up behind them, “Shepard Commander, are you searching for marine wildlife? This unit believes it can be of assistance.”
“Doctor?” Shepard asked.
“Hmmm, could prove useful in cataloging findings. Legion, please assist in cataloging findings of new marine biology.”
“Nice, thanks Legion,” Shepard said with a smile.
The Geth’s brow plates rose and fell quickly, “This unit enjoys being useful.”
Shepard rose her brows at Mordin. Before their adventures, she doubted Legion would have used the word “enjoys” at all. “I’m glad,” she said back before turning around.
She let them continue their search in the waters as she made her way back to the group. She came around the bend, and saw Jack, Jacob, and Miranda teaching Garrus and Tali how to play Volleyball. “Shepard, we need another player!” Jacob yelled out.
“I’m in,” she said as she ditched the sun dress and dug her toes into the sand to run towards them. “I grew up on a ship, but I managed to learn how to play. They know the rules?” she asked, pointing towards Garrus and Tali.
“I think we’ve got it,” Tali said.
They played for nearly an hour before they tired themselves out. “Forgot you had about a ½ a meter in height on us Vakarian,” Jacob grumbled as he and Miranda walked off towards the drinks.
Garrus shrugged with a grin, “What can I say.”
“Want to cool off in the water?” Shepard asked.
Garrus looked out at the ocean apprehensively, “Uhh… yeaaah, I’m not so sure about that.”
“Look, we don’t have to go in too deep. Mordin found a nice quiet spot around the bend a ways, there are hardly any waves at all. Just go in to your waist and get cooled off with me.”
Garrus sighed heavily. “Fine.”
They walked till they were just past Mordin and Legion. “Alright if we swim here?” She asked him.
Mordin came up from his studies. “Of course, Shepard.” Then he rose his brow at Garrus. “Aware of Turian aversion to submersion in waters. Interesting. Found a cove 20 meters that way. Completely shallow and secluded from waves and wildlife. Should be more comfortable.”
Garrus looked at Shepard and she could tell he was about to say no to the whole thing. “Alright, thanks Mordin, c’mon scaredy cat. Let’s go to the cove.”
“Shepard, I have no idea what a scaredy cat is. Is it some kind of pet?”
She laughed and marched forwards.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The cove was beautiful. There were trees above keeping it mostly in the shade, and the water was calm and shallow. Shepard waded in and it only went up to her chest. “C’mon Garrus, look, it’s not deep. It won’t go up to your cowl, for sure.” He looked at her with a look that said he’d rather jump in a varren pit. “I’ll make it worth your while?”
He rose a brow plate, and dipped his feet in. The water was warm at least, so he continued until he stood next to Shepard. She took a step into him so that they were touching and wrapped her arms around him. “Alright, it’s not so bad,” he said reluctantly.
She gazed at him with a look that could melt metal, and took a deep breath in, before slowly sinking below the water. “Shepard,” he said nervously, although he knew she couldn’t hear him.
Shepard held onto his hips to stay below the water with one hand, and started moving his shorts aside with the other. Garrus’ breath hitched. He couldn’t help the rush that went straight to his groin, and he also couldn’t help but still feel nervous in the water. Shepard pushed him back and he took a few steps backwards until his legs hit something when they were nearing the edge. A rock. She pushed him again and he stumbled awkwardly, sitting on the rock. She came up for air and kissed his mandible, sucking on the tips. Garrus groaned, digging his talons into her waist. She submerged again, and he held his breath, partially out of anticipation of what she might do next and partially out of nerves for her being under the water. He knew humans were better with that, but it was ingrained.
He suddenly felt a small tongue lick up the seams of his pelvic plates and he groaned again, digging his talons through her hair. He felt small fingers dig between the plates in his waist. She came up for air again, straddling his lap to kiss him. She ground her hips against his. She was weightless, floating above him, ghosting over his plates, until she pushed herself down into him and began grinding harder into him. “Shepard,” he growled as he nipped at her neck. She suddenly went back under water and nipped at his pubic plate quickly, and licked all the way up and down his seam slowly. He felt his seam part as he groaned loudly, bucking his hips into her as his erection began to grow, emerging from his seam. He felt her lick at it until it came all the way through, and she sucked his cock into her mouth as it grew.
“Fuck,” he said as he threw his head back and bucked his hips. She sucked hard, head bobbing up and down twice before she had to come up for air. She was panting hard and she straddled his lap again, slowly lowering herself onto him, until  his tip was hilted within her.
Shepard moaned loudly and rocked back and forth slightly with her hips. He felt her muscles contract around him a few times and he groaned. Shepard grinned at him before lifting up and moving back down. He could tell it was harder for her in the water, and he placed his hands on her hips and began lifting her up, and slamming her down onto him. It didn’t take long before they were both panting, and it just wasn’t enough. He put her legs around his waist and stood, walking to the back of the cove, he pressed her back against the stony wall and pushed himself into her with a grunt. Shepard squeezed her legs around his waist, one arm holding on around his back, the other wrapped around his neck with her hand massaging under his fringe.
She was so tight, and he hadn’t yet been fully inside her. He took his finger and massaged the nub he knew drove her wild. Shepard began moaning loudly. “God, yes Garrus, fuck,” she groaned. Slowly, with each thrust he pushed further and further inside of her until even the bulge of his base slipped inside of her with a pop. Shepard screamed at that and held on tighter. “Don’t stop,” she screamed, and he didn’t, couldn’t really. He felt her come hard, her walls squeezing him. “Garrus,” she panted. Garrus couldn’t speak, he was too far gone. He merely groaned against her neck as he continued pounding into her, faster and harder.
“Come inside me, Garrus,” she moaned, and he lost control. He came hard with a roar, continuing to pump inside her in erratic thrusts. His body completely enveloped hers against the stone. She was so small, wrapped up in his arms, and he curled around her, willing himself to stay standing. He felt her kiss his mandible lightly. “God, you’re sexy.”
He chuckled, kissing her forehead, “So are you.”
Shepard slipped down and swam in the water to cool off before they headed back. Garrus sat back on the rock and watched, enjoying the view and surprisingly, the cool water around his waist.
--------------------------------------------------
Shepard and Garrus walked back along the beach, hands brushing often. The sun was setting, and it was creating a beautiful glow around them. The whole team was sitting, watching the sunset when the pair joined them.
The group was quiet, reflective. Even Grunt, to Shepard’s surprise. He was growing up, after all. Shepard leaned against Garrus’ shoulder, and they sat there until the sun dipped below the horizon.
“Alright you bunch of pussys,” Zaeed said, elegantly as ever. “Round two.” He started throwing beer bottles at everyone.
“That’s more like it,” Jack huffed.
“Bonfire’s made!” Jacob said as he got the largest bonfire Shepard had ever seen lit using driftwood from the beach.
The team drank under the numerous stars. There were drinking games and songs, friendly wagers and shoot-the-bottle competitions. It was 3 in the morning before they packed up and headed inside. Shepard held Garrus’ hand to pull him back behind the crew and gave him one last kiss under the stars.

MerWeek Day 2: Long Time no See
Summary: Axel and Kaidan are living happily ever after now that the war is over, but there’s only one more thing to solve. A lifetime of anger towards his mother, can he manage to put that all aside for the sake of his newly found daughter?
Ship: M!Shenko

To say Axel was upset that Kaidan had invited his parents to come visit them in Vancouver was a monumental understatement. He was looking forward to seeing his father, but his mother’s an entirely different story. The woman hadn’t sent so much as an email since his return from death and then she had the audacity to pretend nothing was wrong when he had begrudgingly contacted her at her behest during the war. She stated how proud she was of him for commanding his own ship, how he was living his dream. It wasn’t his dream, it was her dream.
Here he was almost thirty-three fucking years old and he doesn’t know what to do with the rest of his life now that the Alliance is behind him. He needs time to think, evaluate and having his mother come over and force feed the Alliance down his throat is not helping. Maybe if he hadn’t lived his teenage years in sex and alcohol, he might have been able to stand up to her and tell her to fuck off like he had wanted to do so many times and have a better grasp of he is as a person and not as Commander Shepard.
Unconsciously, he reaches out to the gravity well of dark energy and he slams the cupboard door in the kitchen, and pounds his glowing fist onto the counter, denting it slightly. A small yelp is heard behind him, and he curses under his breath. The remnants of his biotics fade in blue licks.
It wasn’t about him, it was for his, their, daughter. Her whole life she had known but only one side of her family; her mothers. Axel had been hidden from her her whole life until only recently when Melanie was discovered to have died with Hammer Team. She had been right there. After so many long years, he hadn’t seen her. Damn her for keeping so many memories away.
“So I managed to get most of what was on the list. I couldn’t find asparagus so I’m tweaking tonight’s meal.” Kaidan deposits the brown grocery bag on the counter and pecks Axel on the cheek. It takes only but a moment for him to notice the tension in Axel’s jaw, his temple pulsing as he’s gritting his teeth. Kaidan places a hand over Axel’s and slowly he feels the younger man's tension dissolve away. Axel unclenches his fist, and Kaidan laces his fingers with his. Bringing Axel’s hands against his lips, “I know today is going to be difficult for you. I have your back. But can you promise to try and behave for her?”
Axel glances over his shoulder back at their daughter Ashley. He takes in a deep breath to try and quench the torrent of anger boiling inside him. Looking back at Kaidan, he looks eyes and sighs. “I can’t make promises I know I can’t keep, but I will try as long as she doesn’t mention me returning to the Alliance.”
“Okay, so if she does bring it up,” Kaidan unlaces his fingers and starts putting away the meat and produce in the fridge, “let’s have a ‘safe topic’ plan… like maybe how we need a new countertop?” Kaidan teases as he looks over at Axel.
“We needed a change anyway.” Axel mumbles as he picks up his coffee mug and takes a sip.
“I was thinking about getting a wood countertop.”
“Kaidan…”
“And like Ashley’s soccer. Her academics.”
“Now you’re more on track.”
“Oh, of course! Her track and field too.” Kaidan shuts the fridge door, “see, it’ll be alright.”
“They’re here for two days, Kaidan.”
The sound of the doorbell makes Axel freeze momentarily, his face blanching. There wasn’t a lot that could make the man anxious, but his mother was at the top of the list. He places his mug on the counter before heading out of the kitchen. “I don’t suppose it’s too late to back out of this?”
Kaidan following behind him starts pushing him lightly towards the door, rolls his eyes. He reaches for the door and opens it, one hand still on Axel’s bicep, keeping him in place.
There, standing in front of them, was Axel’s parents. Hannah’s hair was a little more gray than the last time he had seen his mother, but she was still tiny. In her hands was a dish. She hands it over to Axel. “I figured since you’ve been on the mend, you probably haven’t cooked in a while and forgot how to.”
Frustration boils over, and Axel shoves the plate to Kaidan before throwing his hands in the air and walking away.
Kaidan puts on his most pleasant smile, “don’t mind him, he’s having a rough morning. Come inside.”
“I can’t imagine why.” Well, I guess we know where Axel gets his charm from, his father, Kaidan thinks so himself as he steps aside to let the in-laws into the house.
“Kitchen’s down the hall to your left. There’s fresh coffee in the pot.” Kaidan gives them directions as he closes the door behind them and follows the in-laws to the kitchen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The outdoors proved to be a temporary relief from the stress of having his parents over. Not even a second inside the house and she was already on him.
It never ceases. To her, he simply can’t do anything right.
Resting his arms on top of the railing, he leans as he watches their dog run back and forth down below the porch.
This is going to be one hell of a weekend. Facing a thresher maw was easier than facing that woman.
The door opens behind him and he hears light footsteps approaching him. The smell of lilacs reaches his nostrils and he groans. “Mother.”
“Axel. Son. I don’t want animosity between us this weekend. I know I haven’t exactly been the easiest to be around.”
Axel groans deeply.
“Please listen.” Hannah rests her arms on the railing and clasps her hands. “I’m sorry. I didn’t treat you like a son, but as my little soldier. I am proud of everything you did, despite it all, I know I was wrong. I put my career above family. Your father made that abundantly clear the other night. When we got the invitation to come over from Kaidan, he demanded I deny it. Said you wouldn’t want me to come. I see by your reaction that he wasn’t wrong. I hope one day you can forgive me and we can start fresh. Hopefully, this weekend.”
Inhaling deeply, Axel looks up to the clouds, “It’s going to take some time. But I think I can manage.”
“We have all the time in the world now, thanks to you.” Hannah pulls away and heads inside but not before giving her son a gentle pat on the back.
Yeah, All the fucking time in the world.
Heaven knows I might never sleep
          Day 5: we are family Describe or draw a familiar moment. Are they close, or estranged? Are they blood relatives, or family found with friends?
ship: Tali + Wrex word count: 618 summary: During Shepard’s party, Wrex and Tali have some down time to chat.
          Putting the two of them in a box wouldn’t yield impressive results. At least that’s what she assumes for the most part. Tali sees Wrex as a good friend, someone who is kind of like her crazy uncle or grandpa, in terms of human speak, but she isn’t close to him like she is with Shepard, considering he left the Normandy soon after they defeated Saren together.           Not because he didn’t want to defeat the reapers and helps Shepard and the crew, but because Wrex has his own people to look after, and well, those were the terms of their verbal contract. Actually, they’re the terms for a lot of them, even Tali could’ve left the Commander but she stayed on and helped until it was destroyed over 2 years ago.
          Wrex and Tali are good friends, forged in the fight against the reapers with Shepard and the Normandy crew. The pair definitely aren’t strangers.           After the Normandy was taken, and after Tali showed Shepard her favourite movie, it’s time to party and taking a break from talking to everyone from the ship, Tali decided to visit her favourite Krogans (or at least one of her favourites, she still has a soft spot for Grunt). Tali sits next to Wrex, wearing her regular outfit, she holds onto her drink that has an emergency induction port.           “How do you drink that, Tali?” Wrex asks.           “Simple,” she begins holding onto the straw. “Take this and put it here,” she explains before taking a sip.           “Huh.”           Tali smiles, whether Wrex could actually see that or not, none was the wiser. Wrex decided on wearing his usual red plated outfit, the one you’d normally see on missions. But, unlike Tali, doesn’t have to wear a face mask of sorts.           Wrex was doing some work around the citadel and decided to drop by, at a good time too — while Shepard was being obliterated by bullets, Wrex did the one thing he enjoys, and that’s murder. Of course, not against the average person, but against someone like Shepard, it’s the obvious reason why.           “How has reclaiming the home planet been?” Wrex asks.           Tali stops drinking for a moment to ponder Wrex’s question for a moment. “Good, I think we’re all just waiting for the war to be over, and then we can go about habitation again.”           “Sounds like a party, I can’t wait to visit,” Wrex said with a bit of a deep seated chuckle.           “It will be,” Tali says, smiling to herself, “It’s been nearly 300 years since our people have been home, so it’ll be nice to finally… go home, I guess.”           “Must be a lot, for you,” Wrex says.           “What do you mean, Wrex?” Tali asks.           Wrex lets out a long sigh, “I think about if I had to rehabilitate my planet with people, and life, I think it would be overwhelming.”           “But aren’t you doing that now?” she asks.           “Sort of, but we already had Tuchanka. You Quarians have all been on ships for your entire lives, it’s only now do you finally have a place to call home,” Wrex prefaces.           Tuchanka will be able to be rebuilt into the lush green planet it once was. Wrex doesn’t think he’ll be alive to see it, but he hopes that his children and his children’s children will be able to see it.           “Home is a state of mind, anywhere can be home, Wrex,” Tali says.           Wrex hums and nods his head for a moment. Tali sighs and leans over so she can rest her head on Wrex, who initially was taken a back by the moment, but settled into it.           Sometimes, home can be a crew and their crazy uncle/grandpa.
2019 Mass Effect Relationships Week - Fanfic Prompts
Tumblr media
As part of the Mass Effect Relationships Week, or #MERweek, being held by @cactuarkitty to celebrate all relationships within the original Mass Effect trilogy and Andromeda (all kinds of relationships - romantic, platonic, friendships, bromances, familial, enemies, frenemies, working relationships etc.) I was asked once again to put together a fun set of optional fic prompts for writers to have some fun with.
The week runs from  July 1st to July 7th and is for both the original Mass Effect trilogy AND Andromeda. Remember, these prompts are all optional - so have fun with them! :)
As always please be sensible and sensitive when writing fics - tag for appropriate triggers and follow all of the main MERweek event rules on @cactuarkitty‘s blog.
The Prompts
Day 1: Tall Tales
All relationships have those stories. You know the ones. Those famous stories. The good ones. Like the time Shepard took down the reaper on foot. Or Kaidan got involved in the Vorcha mafia. Or the time Vega got drunk and kissed Steve. What? It happened. It totally happened.
Day 2: A Night on the Town
A lot can happen late at night. Maybe Down a dark alley ... or maybe in a bar. Enemies can meet for that final fight. Friends can have hilarious adventures. And lovers can do what they do best!
Day 3: A Friend in Need
You can take this prompt where you want to. A genuine plea for help on the battlefield, a moment of kindness in which one person realizes how much they love the other. Go nuts.
Day 4: Gifts
What monster doesn’t like getting a present? But who knows what’s inside of that box, and what it might lead to ...
Day 5: Extreme Emotions
Write about a moment when emotions between your characters became a little extreme. Did their relationship become stressed? Did things get hot? Did loves almost break up? Drama, angst, smut, fluff - everything is on the table!
Day 6: Confessions / Secrets
Relationships are all about confessions ... or the things we don’t confess. Go on - tell me a little story about your characters deepest darkest secrets.
Day 7: Real World AU
Let’s have some fun for our final day! Time to drop your characters into an alternate universe story set in the real world. Hey - it’s all optional. If you don’t want to, you don’t have to! ;)
Please make sure to tag your post #MERweek2019 in the first five tags so we can reblog and share it. Have fun! Please check out @cactuarkitty‘s blog as she will be posting the main MER Week post some time on the 3rd June. And @rock-paperback-scissors who has some amazing art prompts! ♡
Mass Effect Relationships Week 2019: Art prompts!
Mass Effect Relationships Week (MERweek) is happening July 1-7, 2019! Hosted by the amazing @cactuarkitty, it’s a time to celebrate relationships of all kinds (romances, friendships, rivalries, etc) from the original trilogy as well as Andromeda.
I was asked to provide daily art prompts. These are, of course, just suggestions to help get inspiration flowing. Be sure to use #merweek2019 in the first five tags of your post to have it reblogged as part of the event!
Day 1: Competition. Shooting contests? Board games? Arm wrestling? Show us how (friendly) competition can bring people together!
Day 2: Comfort. These characters have, of course, been through a lot. Show us how they comfort and support each other - physically or psychologically.
Day 3: Secrets. Do the characters share a secret that no one else knows about? Or is one of them keeping a secret from the other? Create a piece of art that explores things that are kept hidden.
Day 4: Don't let go. Draw a character holding another. Maybe it's a hug, or a dance, or one is trying to stop the other from joining a brawl.
Day 5: Alternate universes. It's time to explore all the glorious non-canon possibilities! Bring together two characters who never got to meet in the games! Or, send your favorite couple off into a Regency AU!
Day 6: Memories and reflections. Imagine the characters looking back on the relationship. Are they going through old vacation photos? Replaying their first meeting? Or are they struggling to recall details that they used to know like the back of their own hand?
Day 7: Relationships beyond the game. Create a piece of art to celebrate a friendship that you’ve formed as a result of Mass Effect. Illustrate someone else's fanfic, do a trade with another artist, draw your friends' Shepards having a party - the sky's the limit.
PS: be sure to also check out @vorchagirl’s fanfic prompts here!
MERweek2019 - Day 2 - A Night on the Town
Event hosted by @cactuarkitty with fanfic prompts by @vorchagirl
Prompt - A lot can happen late at night. Maybe Down a dark alley … or maybe in a bar. Enemies can meet for that final fight. Friends can have hilarious adventures. And lovers can do what they do best!
Here’s a fic with a Shepard whose... generally not the best at flirting. =P
---
Tumblr media
“An Evening at the Casino”
Sitting in a quiet booth, Tali'Zorah felt like a queen ever since she arrived at the Silver Coast Casino.  She and her boyfriend, Commander Adam Shepard, went out on a couple of dates before, but this was the first time they ever went someplace fancy.  It wasn't that they never wanted to - although there were a lot of places that had both levo and dextro menus, not many had quarian-friendly options.  Neither of them knew about the casino until they had to go on an infiltration mission with Maya Brooks.
Of course a week-long shore leave just had to start with trouble in the form of a identity thief with a mercenary band, property damage in a restaurant and a car dealership, and the infiltration of C-Sec.  And that was all within an hour during lunch time!
Shepard let her purchase the nicest shawl she had ever owned for the gala.  It was light and made with real silk and patterned with black and white swirls.  The next time she was in Shepard's cabin, she planned to wrap the shawl around her body and feel the silk with her bare hands.
When they arrived, they received what humans called 'the red carpet treatment.'  Tali didn't fully understand the concept and the whys, but she didn't care.  Strolling in on Shepard's arm, dressed in their best, and waving to those who watched them walk by – not to mention the beaming smile he gave her – made Tali feel like royalty.
Brooks was currently somewhere in the ventilation shaft above their heads  The plan was to shut down security to the panic room where they expected to find the casino owner Elijah Khan, an arms dealer who may or may not know who Shepard's identity thief was.  Brooks only ran into a small problem in the beginning, but otherwise things were going according to plan so far.
All Shepard and Tali had to do was provide support... and mingle with the crowd in between to ward off suspicion.  They did talk to a few people and danced a little (Tali always found Shepard's... eccentric dancing endearing), but they eventually decided to grab a booth and drinks. Shepard offered to get both of their drinks while Tali relaxed in their chosen booth, one located in a quiet corner and away from prying eyes.  It didn't take him long to return.  He gave her a beaming smile and, despite wearing her helmet, she did the same.
“Here's your triple filtered turian champagne, miss,” Shepard said in that pleasant way most servers do as he placed the container of wine in front of her on the table.  He then placed down a long, thin sterilized bag next to it. “And here is your... emergency induction port.”  He ended that last sentence with a wink.
Tali groaned.  “I'm guessing you're never going to let me live that down.”
“Nope,” Shepard bemused as he sat down next her in the booth.  He placed his own drink down on the table.  “I figured it was fair since I'll likely never live down accidentally closing what is now apparently everyone's favorite sushi place.  Even my Mom sent a message telling me, and I quote, 'I'm not mad about my favorite sushi spot being destroyed... I'm just disappointed.'”
“Well,” Tali began to tease.  “You did break their floor before I could fulfill my childhood dream of going there for a nice dinner.”
Shepard raised a single eyebrow at her.  “Did they even have anything you can eat there?”
Tali leaned into him to whisper in his ear.  “Not.  The point.  Dear.”
Shepard sighed.  “If it makes you feel any better, I didn't get the chance to even place an order.”
Tali folded her arms as she quickly shook her head.  She also turned her nose up at him.  “Nope.  That doesn't make me feel better at all. Not even close.”
Shepard took a sip of his champagne before he scooted closer and leaned his head towards her ear.  “I can make it up to you.”
Tali didn't bother to turn to him.  She tried to sound indifferent as she replied, “How?”
Shepard leaned in just a little closer to where his face was just a few inches away from her.  “Well...” he whispered.  “I was going to surprise you with this news much later, but... the master bedroom and bathroom have a full working de-contaminator and sterilizer unit.”
That made Tali's eyes go wide as she turned to look at Shepard.  “Really?” she squeaked.
Shepard grinned as he nodded.  “Really.  It was Anderson's gift to us.  He had a company install it just before he gave me his apartment.”
Tali tilted her head, astonished by Anderson's sweet gesture. “That's... really generous of him.”
Shepard simply nodded, and Tali didn't miss the small frown on his face.  She knew that he was thinking about his mentor, who was fighting the war on Earth as of this moment.  He always felt guilty about leaving Anderson behind despite the Admiral pushing him to leave.
Tali brought his attention back by brushing a single finger along his jawline.  “When this thing with the identity thief is over,” she murmured.  “I'll take my herbal supplements.”
Her words weren't exactly the most flirt-worthy thing she ever said, but it still made him grin nevertheless.  He wrapped one arm around her shoulders before he gently pulled her in closer to him.  “Herbal supplements... just the very words every guy wants to hear.”
That somehow made Tali giggle.  As charming and handsome as Shepard was, he was definitely not the most graceful at flirting.  Still, she found it very endearing because, well... it's Shepard.
“You know what I want to hear more?” Shepard whispered as he leaned closer to his lover, lowering his voice even more at his next words. “I want to hear you shout my name as I take you on the new bed over and over until you are completely satiated.”
Tali's suit suddenly felt too warm... and too snug.  “Oh I bet you do,” she managed to say as she looked directly into his blue eyes – and oh, how he looked at her with such love and adoration, it made her grin so wide it nearly made her cheeks hurt.
“You're smiling,” Shepard suddenly mentioned as he grinned at her.  “And it's a big smile, too.”
Tali tried to act like she didn't know what he was talking about.  “Oh? And how do you know this?”
“The way your eyes curve,” Shepard mentioned.  “It makes your eyes look like a pair of crescent moons.”  The hand that was on Tali's shoulders moved a little down her arm.  “Did I ever tell you that of all your beautiful curves, your smile is my favorite one?”
His words were both sweet and... what was the human word?  Oh, right! Cheesy.  And yet, she was blushing like a young quarian who just earned their new suit and who tried to talk to her crush. Speaking of suits, she really wished it came with an air conditioner right about now.
Tali moved closer to Shepard until her visor gently pressed against his forehead, the closest to a kiss they could manage while she was in her suit.  She was still smiling as she said to him in an alluring voice, “You know people are probably watching us right now.”
“Good, let them,” Shepard replied, his own voice low and husky. “Let them watch and be envy of you.  Let them wish they were as gorgeous as you are right now.”
Those words sent a pleasant shiver down her spine as Shepard's free hand moved to rest around her waist.  One more inch closer and Tali knew she'd be right on top of him.  The thought of sitting on his lap with her long legs around his waist in this booth, in view of the other patrons, sent a thrill through Tali's core.  She was very tempted to do just that.
She was about to respond when suddenly, their comm crackled to life and the sound nearly startling them both.  “Uh... Commander...” the voice of Maya Brooks whispered, her voice hinted with worry.  “I think I tripped a wire... help!”
Tali groaned... she almost forgot about Brooks and why they were at the casino in the first place!  Shepard groaned as well as they pulled away from each other.  “Did I ever tell you how amazing of a hacker you are?  You would've never tripped a wire.”
Tali giggled as she lightly tapped a finger at the tip of his nose.  “You better never forget that, mister.”
“That would be such a crime,” Shepard said with a grin.  He then took a moment to gulp down what remained of his champagne before placing the glass down back on the table.  “Come on, let's get this over with. Then we can get back to what's more important.”  He gave her a wink at that last sentence before he began sliding out of the booth with Tali following not too far.
10, 13, 27 and 40 for the ME asks.
Thanks so much for the asks!
10. What kind of friend is Shepard? Loyal, but a hard nut to crack at first. She tends to keep people at arms length until she really gets to know them. Once she becomes someone’s friend though, she would do almost anything for them.
13. How does Shepard get along with their family? Ohhhhhh, a sad one. Marie is a colonist and outside of her immediate family that she lost on Mindoir, she doesn’t have anyone else. She got along well with them though. Her older brother was a little more rebellious and itching to get away and do something more exciting than farming. Marie assumed she’d take over the farm some day and just stay a colony kid forever.
27. Did they ever cheat on each other? Nope. I think both Marie and Garrus realize they are both pretty fragile emotionally at times and something like that would not only ruin their relationship, but probably create a lot of mental issues for themselves and the other person as well. For the most part, they both feel they’re exactly where they’re supposed to be.
Now, Marie was in a relationship with Kaidan in ME1. After receiving his post Horizon letter, she wrote him back telling him she was sorry she didn’t contact him, that she had tried to but no one would tell her where he was. She also tells him it’s probably best he move on since this could be suicide mission and she doesn’t want to put him through that again. The Illusive Man blocks it, so Kaidan never receives it. In her mind, they had broken up before she started her relationship with Garrus.
40. Is there someone in the squad of ME/ME2/ME3 Shepard dislikes? Why? In ME2 I think Miranda is her least favorite for most of the game. Mare has a lot of complicated feelings about being dead and then not being dead and Miranda is tied into that. She also doesn’t trust her because she knows how close Miranda is to the Illusive Man. Things start to soften after Miranda’s personal quest and definitely after she tells off the Illusive Man at the end. They eventually end up friends but not really until after ME2 is over.
MERweek 2021 Fanfic and Fanart Prompts  (made by @cactuarkitty)
Note: These are suggestions to get you started. You can write or draw whatever your heart desires, as long as it stays within the rules. Also you can use these for edits and gifs too if you would like.
Day 1: fun(?) in the sun.
Describe or draw a fun (or not so fun) day out at the seaside. It could be an earthly type beach, or a tropical planet. Is this a new experience for them? Does the day out go as planned? Who knows what could happen after all...
Day 2: long time no see.
Describe or draw a reunion between two or more people. Had they anticipated the reunion in a positive or negative way? Had they thought about them often, or not at all? How much time has passed and are they happy to see each other?
Day 3: missed opportunities.
Describe or draw a relationship that could have been. What kept them apart? Do they regret it or are they happy the way things turned out?
Day 4: mass effect + andromeda AU.
Describe or draw a moment the two universes collide. Shepard and the Ryder twins could be half siblings or cousins. Characters from both could be related somehow or friends. Maybe even The Illusive Man and Alec Ryder used to be friends and now hate each other. The sky’s the limit!
Day 5: we are family
Describe or draw a familiar moment. Are they close, or estranged? Are they blood relatives, or family found with friends?
Day 6: pet day!
Describe or draw a special moment with your beloved pet/s. Could be special time spent together or shared time with friends/family. Let's have fun with our furry (or not so furry) friends :)
Day 7: it's christmas time!
Describe or draw the celebration of Christmas. What are some of their traditions with presents, decorations, outfits, food etc? Is this their first time ever hearing about or celebrating the holiday? Bring out the ugly xmas sweaters! (Note: you can exchange christmas out for other holidays if you wish.)
Day 3 of MERWeek 2021! Prompt: missed opportunities
read it on ao3!
This work contains spoilers for the main fic, Out of Orbit (particularly the as of yet not released Chapter 15)! Reader discretion is advised.
Blonde locks shown golden in the sunlight, dazzling as she threw her head back at the joke. Her smile was bright. Lips full. Her hand was clasped with another's. Happy. Shepard realized with a dull pang in her chest. She's so much happier without me.
“Hey Addie.”
Her smile faded. Eyes snapped to Shepard’s. “Nova?” Her voice was disbelieving.
“It’s good to see you again.”
“Fuck…” Adeline stared, mouth agape. “Yeah, it’s good to see you again too I—I thought you were—but then the news…”
“I was. And then I wasn’t. Sorry, that’s not exactly clear. It’s…it’s a long story.” Shepard took a fortifying breath and looked to the woman on Adeline’s right. She was pretty. Dainty. Nothing like Shepard. She stuck out a hand in greeting. “Commander Shepard.”
The woman shook it, eyes wide with awe. “I know who you are, Commander. It’s an honor.”
Shepard suppressed a cringe and nodded. “Thanks.”
Addie seemed to shake from whatever reverie she was in. “Sorry, Nova—uh…Shepard. Er…Commander.”
It was weird to see Adeline like this. She was usually so confident. So brazen. So full of life and unshakable. “Shepard is fine.” Nobody called her Nova anymore.
The corners of Adeline’s mouth—corners that Shepard had pressed kisses into so long ago—tugged down in a nearly imperceptible frown. It was gone in a flash though as the mask slid back on and the Adeline Daniels she knew returned.
“Shepard and I go way back, Charlotte. Went to N-School together. Or at least the first few years together. She passed me up.”
As far as Shepard remembered, it was Adeline that passed on her. Not the other way around. A ring on the counter still burned into Shepard’s mind.
She smiled though, laughed, because it was expected.
“I thought it would be the other way around! Daniels is a very talented spacer.”
Once again, Addie’s grin faltered. “Just call me Addie. I was never so formal as you were, Shepard.”
           “Addie.”
           “What?”
           “Your tongue was in my mouth. I think we’re a little beyond last names.”
Shepard blinked away the memory. God, she needed to get it under control.
Charlotte smiled brightly. “It’s not just Daniels, anymore either. We combined our names when we got married. It’s Daniels-Mays, now.” Charlotte looked up to Adeline with goddamn stars in her eyes. Like a lovesick puppy.
“How sweet.”
Addie frowned at Shepard’s flat tone, but Charlotte didn’t seem to notice.
“We were married just last month. We’ve been on our honeymoon since! Not that there’s a whole lot of places to go with you know…everything that’s been going on, but we’ve made do. Haven’t we Adeline?”
Addie hated her full name.
“Yeah. We’re apartment hunting here on the Astreous. Are you living here, Shepard?”
Not for much longer. Not if bumping into her ex-fiance would be a regular occurrence. Shepard shook away the thought. The Astreous was a large space station. Meeting Addie here today was pure coincidence. The likelihood of seeing her again was slim to none.
“Yeah. I have an apartment with my girlfriend.” The lie slipped from her tongue.
“You mean the asari? I kept seeing her on the news with you. What was her name again? Lisa?”
“Liara. Dr. Liara T’Soni.” Who was not here with her anymore. Who had gone back to Thessia. Without her.
           “I need some space, Shepard.”
           “We have nothing but space, Liara! That’s why we moved up here.”
           “I need some space away from you.”
Some vindictive part of her was glad to see the jealous spark in Addie’s eyes. The knee-jerk mine that she felt too, even after all these years. Happily married my ass.
“Speaking of, I should probably get going. She’s expecting me.” Another lie. She had never been able to lie to Addie before.
“It was good seeing you, Shepard. I hope to see you around.”
If I never see you again it will be too soon. “You too.”
Shepard turned and walked away, the empty, gaping hole in her chest cracking even wider.
Chapters: 3/7 Fandom: Mass Effect Trilogy, Mass Effect - All Media Types Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply  @cactuarkitty Day 3 - Missed Opportunities  A series of one shots from Tumblr MER Week prompts.
Here’s a little bit of it: Nihlus' subharmonics were sympathetic, kind even. Without looking at each other, they stood in silence for a moment. Then he asked, "Why tell me?" Why would she share that with him? Shepard shrugged. "Trust you, I suppose. Not sure why. Hopefully, you'll be my Spectre mentor soon. You've got all the intel on the table to work with." He appreciated the gesture. He nodded his head, his mandibles going up and out to show his appreciation. It occurred to him, that she might not realize what it meant. "Ah... thank you," he said verbally, and a bit awkwardly. She smiled and nodded, "I'm pretty good with Turian communication styles. You don't have to verbalize if you don't want to, messages received," she said with a two finger, playful salute. Honestly it was a relief. He was uncomfortable saying most emotions instead of using his subharmonics, dual-vocals, and facial cues. "Just keep in mind, humans can't hear subharmonics," she added. Damn, he thought. Oh well, he'd make due. "Understood, appreciated Commander."
