Chuck's inability to connect to Metatron's experience in SPN 11x20 "Don't Call Me Shirley"
In the previous episodes, we saw Metatron insult Castiel, try to goad Castiel into killing him, lament the difficulties of life, and finally beg for help. ("Oh, Castiel. HELP ME!")
Castiel put him in traction. Dropped him off at the hospital.
And that shook Metatron to his core.
///
METATRON: You saw what happened the last time I was with your B.F.F. Castiel. CHUCK: Yeah, he beat you nearly to death. I gotta tell you, even from far away, you kinda had that coming. METATRON: I did. (gets up) But Cas-hat... he spared me. He showed mercy. (sits down opposite CHUCK) And do you know what was the first thing I heard when I woke up in my cold hospital bed? It was hands-down the sweetest, loveliest song I ever heard in my whole, long, sad bottom-feeder existence... My heartbeat. I was still alive. The joy of knowing that you're still alive, and the simultaneous panic of knowing that someday that heart is going to stop beating, that's humanity. It's frail and it's flawed, but damn it, it's worth fighting for.
And Chuck? Chuck responds with unbridled cynicism. Metatron fires back:
CHUCK: That's a really sweet story, Metatron. Good details, nice balance, and a healthy dose of truth. But it's a little late for a redemption arc, don't you think? METATRON: For me, or for you?
///
Chuck immediately frames Metatron's experiences as STORY, then clinically ANALYZES it. Chuck does not CONNECT to it.

Wait. Hold on. I just finished my second watch of season two and I have a theory…
I think Aziraphale knew he fucked up before he ever got on that elevator.
HEAR ME OUT!
I think the moment that he heard that his big project would be the Second Coming, he instantly realized Crowley was right. As soon as the Metatron mentions the Second Coming, Aziraphale looks directly to Crowley with what I think is very-well-concealed panic. I don’t think that was a wistful gaze at what-might’ve-been. I think that was an instinctive entreaty for help from the person he trusts most in the world, followed by the immediate realization that he can’t ask for Crowley for help without letting the Metatron know something’s wrong.
Because Aziraphale KNOWS that the Second Coming is just a different flavor of Armageddon, it’s literally the rapture. There’s no planet where our boy has changed so much that he’d be willing to bring about the end of humanity, and the fact that he didn’t object to the idea instantly is important. To me, it means that Aziraphale must’ve made a split-second decision to play along. He didn’t have time to tell Crowley what was wrong, and even if he could’ve, he didn’t have enough information to put a stop to it.
Basically, I think that in the moments after the Metatron mentioned the Second Coming Aziraphale realized several things in quick succession
Crowley was right.
He and Crowley were going to have to save the world again.
If they were going to stop another apocalypse, they needed to know what they were up against.
The only way to know was to have a man on the inside.
There wasn’t time to tell Crowley any of it.
Now the question is, how does Aziraphale let Crowley know what’s going on?? Because he can’t stop Armageddon 2 (Electric Bugaloo) by himself.

Never getting over the way Cas’s dialogue when he thinks he’ll die in Stuck in the Middle (With You) parallels his final speech to Dean in Despair
Just !! talking about their time being the best prt of his life, saying the things they’d done changed him, even the willingness to let himself die so that they can live. And of course it’s all framed very generally, so it might apply to everyone, but his whole speech starts with Dean saying “Cas, come on” and Cas saying “No, you listen to me,” because this is what he has to say to DEAN.
Like, don’t get me wrong, the things Cas says applies to the others, too! That’s honestly kind of my favorite part of it: that he took all the things he wanted to say to Dean—the things he eventually would say—and chose the pieces that applied to everyone else, too. But his speech is FOR Dean, and the famous “I love you…I love all of you” drives that home, because that’s the moment Cas intentionally shifts his meaning to include the others.

I was reading the draft script for 9x22 Stairway to Heaven and I found this part in it hilarious. Castiel opens the gates of heaven and finds shirtless pictures of Dean plastered everywhere. The next page cracks me up the most because it sounds like Sam is implying that this is Castiel's ideal version of heaven. Is he too ashamed to admit he's got a schoolgirl obsession with Dean? If they actually included this in the episode, it would be the most wildest thing ever.

i hate supernatural and it's unfortunately beautiful yet poorly executed message about humanity being flawed but still worth saving because it's not about what you are born as but the good that you do

OK WAIT
metatron specifically asks crowley if he recognizes him, but how would metatron know crowley saw video files of him? unless he has met crowley before and knew that crowley knew him too, and later metatron says that crowley always asked "damn fool questions"
AND
angel crowley in the opening scene talks about putting his questions into a suggestion box for god, which we know IS the metatron, as we see in season 1 when aziraphale tries to talk to god
SO im pretty sure that means crowley asked his questions to the metatron, and the reason he fell at all is because of whatever was said in that conversation, (obviously he wasn't struck down immediately, the war still had to happen, but im sure whatever metatron said made crowley want to 'hang out with the wrong crowd') and metatron left enough of an impression that he remembered what he looked like more than metatron's own fellow angels
just a thought I hadn't seen anyone talk about

Part 11
Angel.
Crowley called him ANGEL.
He's spent a couple of long and tiring months without hearing that word, not like that. In Heaven, being an angel is a responsibility, a duty. But Crowley doesn't use that word like that. He only calls Aziraphale 'angel'.
Angel. It has become an endearing word between humans. Sometimes, Aziraphale asks himself if his demon calling him like that could have anything to do with that. Maybe they saw them as a couple and started to use that word for their loved ones as well.
Aziraphale doesn't like being a Heaven's angel, but, oh God, he LOVES being Crowley's angel.
"Aziraphale?" Crowley knows what he just said. The word just slipped out of his mouth. He's so used to it, he can't help it! But he didn't think it would affect the angel that much. But it has. Aziraphale is frozen, his eyes teary. "Are you-"
"I'm fine." The angel recomposes himself. "Come on, there's no time to lose."
"Are you sure? You look..." He doesn't finish the sentence. Both of them know what he means.
"I mean it, Crowley."
"Yeah, listen to your angelic boyfriend..."

->Part 1
This is a short one ^^
I just felt like posting something cute (more or less). Maybe I'll be a bit off, I've got exams...

Devastation: Metatron calling Chuck out on his nihilism, SPN 11x20 "Don't Call Me Shirley"
///
METATRON: It wasn't just the saps who were praying to you. The angels prayed, too. And so did I – every day. CHUCK: I know. METATRON: You want to sell the best-selling autobiography of all time? You explain to me – Tell me why you abandoned me. Us. CHUCK: Because you disappointed me. You all disappointed me. METATRON: (Stands up and looks at CHUCK with wet eyes.) No, look. I know I'm a disappointment, but you're wrong about humanity. They are your greatest creation because they're better than you are. (CHUCK starts to look more guilty as he looks at METATRON.) METATRON: Yeah, sure, they're weak and they cheat and steal and...destroy and disappoint. But they also give and create and they sing and dance and love. And above all, they never give up! But, you do! (CHUCK looks devastated. METATRON continues to look at CHUCK with a tear rolling down his cheek. CHUCK puts on his glasses, clears his throat, and starts typing with determination in his eyes. METATRON looks heart-broken.)
(CHUCK starts to look more guilty as he looks at METATRON.)

ok but metatron meeting god in s11 is beautiful and heartbreaking because he is THE fallen angel.
lucifer is the king of hell and castiel is the winchester’s kingpin but metatron? metatron is nothing. he is the sisyphus of humanity. he is doomed to rot amongst the lowest of existence and relive his worst mistakes ad nauseam. his pride has been beaten to a bloody pulp and his divinity taken from him, but still he reveres humanity. he is full of so much hatred and vitriol and fury but its because he flew too close to the sun. he loved too strongly, and he was abandoned.
metatron is such an intriguing character in general because he is such a cunt and so disgustingly awful in his self-satisfaction, yet still so vulnerable. he is a human that walks among angels. he is a meaningless speck in the larger picture. he knows he is flawed, he is pathetic, he is worth so little, yet he still stands up to his creator. he is the scribe of god who was left behind. he has spent countless millennia hidden away in awe of god’s creation, enraptured with their wit and ingenuity yet too scared to ever partake. he’s all sorts of awful and fucked up but when push comes to shove he gets up in chuck’s face and tells him he’s a goddamn coward and half the man that he loves.
yet despite this metatron talks about god with such awe. such reverence. god was his maker and his destroyer, his world and its downfall. god was everything to metatron, and he never forgave him for leaving. it filled him with such dismay and rage to be his most trusted confidant, the one to speak directly with the lord himself, then to be left behind in silence. i mean, just look at the way metatron describes him:
Tumblr media
you are light. beauty. creation. wrath, damnation and salvation. why did you abandon us? why did you abandon me? you picked me. your light shined upon me, but then you left me. i prayed, every day. i know i am a disappointment, but you are wrong about humanity. they never give up. but you do. they are better than you are.
i dunno man. it just makes me feel all sorts of ways about the broken, bitter and twisted shell of god’s voice telling him that he was his first love and his first light, but that he’s also a coward. that an angel of the lord knows he is flawed of his own mistakes but that what god did to the world— and to him, was blasphemy, no matter how bright He shines. tis a stark reminder that supernatural is the Family Is Hell show and that generational trauma has roots too deep to cut loose.

Am I the only one that thinks Aziraphale could fix heaven? Maybe I'm an optimist or naive, but he puts his heart and SOUL into things. Heaven doesn't want to be fixed, but he's not gonna make the "ineffable plan must be armageddon" mistake again. He's going to stop the world from ending. And if Crowley helps? They don't stand a chance

We all know that S3 is gonna be about the Second Coming-slash-Final Judgement blah blah blah blah blah but what i NEED is for Jesus to radiate so much little sibling energy™. I need them and Crowley to be a chaotic-sibling-bestie duo ok??? It's one of the only ways i can heal
#good omens#crowley#i need jesus to be a very chill dude (gn. they could be a little girl for we know) who pops out of the silver plane and surrounded by CIA#angel bodyguards and then they see Crowley and just fucking runs up to him to choke-bear hug hybrid him the way only little clingy sibs do#and then the angel operatives freak out#jesus: GASPS!!! HI BESTIEE🥰🥰🥰!!! how are ya doin?#crowley: what#angel mafia: !!!! AKDSKSDHASDJKL#and then crowley proceeds to kidnap him and then babysit him. they go to the barbie premier and the Eras tour and the bahamas and just went#around the world. leaving chaos in their wake. we're talking about confusion bafflement and maybe a whole ton of buffets being suddenly#replaced with fish and bread that could feed 6000 people. and then they fuck over governments without even trying and giving the poor the#queers the conspiracy theorists and all of the marginalized peeps everything they WANT#and where was aziraphale in all of this? stuck on heaven's top floor just seething that he can't go out cause the metatron locked him in.#the metatron angel-proofed the whole building just so aziraphale cannot leave. they're in lockdown and everyone is panicking. Aziraphale#the pedantic loophole-obsessed bastard that he is. was like "If they fucking angel-proofed superheaven then I'm gonna escape the good old-#fashioned human way. He then demolishes the glass with his bare fists. everyone screams and he walks out of heaven wearing#his tartan and shades because cool bamf angels don't look at the chaos they unleashed.
