Jupiter Influence Among Korean Actors

Over the years, I have noticed a distinct pattern in the Korean entertainment industry, where most stars considered to be icons have strong Jupiter influence in their charts. Korean general public prefers celebs with a graceful and elegant image, who also have "duality" (they're cute but fierce) and Jupiter natives are endowed with these charms.

I had already mentioned female Kpop idols & Jupiter influence on a previous post, so, this post will focus mainly on Korean actors.

Song Hye Kyo is arguably the most successful Korean actress of all time. She has been in the top billing for over 20years at this point.

She has Hasta Moon (I had mentioned in another post about how Hasta women are revered for their femininity and grace), Uttarashada Ketu (UA gives one a glamorous image) and Vishaka Mercury Atmakaraka.

Atmakaraka is what signifies our soul's purpose, hers lies in the Jupiterean nak of Vishaka.

In fact, its very common for Korean actors to have their atmakaraka or amatyakaraka in a Jupiter nakshatra.

2. Park Minyoung has Venus in Purvabhadrapada as her atmakaraka

She rose to fame playing a young girl who disguises herself as a guy in order to attend school in ancient Korea. It is her family's dire circumstances that push her to attend school in order to find work. This whole drama is very Jupiter coded and the majority of the cast have strong Jupiter placements as well.

Her most popular drama is What's Wrong With Secretary Kim where she plays the secretary to a CEO who is almost inept without her micromanaging his life. I've noticed that many Jupiter women tend to be in this position where, in whatever relationship dynamic, others don't know what to do in her absence because she often single-handedly runs the whole place and makes it look easy and only in her absence do they realise that its far from easy.

3.Kim Ji-won is Punarvasu moon

One of her best known roles is that of Choi Ae-ra in Fight My Way, which I would say is a very typical Punarvasu character. Punarvasu's enthusiasm, almost childlike behaviour and charm can fit the description of a quintessential Asian romcom protagonist and Choi Ae-ra is a very good example of the same. Her rise from the bottom rung of the ladder to working hard to get where she is, is also a very Jupiterean tale (since Jupiter moon natives go through their Saturn mahadasha as young adults).

4.Kim Go-eun has Punarvasu mercury & ketu

Kim Go-eun's first ever starring role was as Eungyo in the movie of the same name.

It is the story of a teenage girl who becomes the object of desire for a 70yr old poet. The movie is very Punarvasu coded imo. In fact, regarding her casting, the novelist, whose book was adapted to the film, had this to say:

 "She was perfect for the forever virgin and forever young image that Eun-gyo symbolizes."

This is literally the embodiment of Punarvasu energy which makes the native simultaneously sensual and innocent.

5. Gong Hyo Jin has Vishaka moon atmakaraka and mercury in Purvabhadrapada amatyakaraka

Her character in When the Camellia Blooms is very Jupiter coded. Jupiter energy can often be manifest as a kind of innocence and naivete and a tendency to be a goody two-shoes.

6.Shin Min-ah has Saturn in Vishaka as amatyakaraka

Her most well known role would be that of a doctor in Hometown Cha Cha Cha, in which she plays a person who refuses to compromise on her principles/ethics to get ahead in her career and has to end up leaving Seoul for a small town. This is again, very Jupiter coded because Jupiter influence makes natives very righteous and possess a strong sense of integrity.

7.Han So hee is Vishaka sun

She was recently in an MV for Jungkook's song 'Seven' which features a quarrelling couple. I've often noticed that with many famous Vishaka women, fighting with their partner, often publicly seems to become attached to their public image. This could also apply to their relationships becoming controversial in general. Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Lana Del Rey, Jennie etc all have their luminaries in Vishaka with the exception of Lana who has a Vishaka stellium and they've all had relationship drama that caught public attention in a major way.

The role that catapulted Han So Hee to fame was that of a married man's mistress in the drama The World of the Married👀

8. Jung So-min has Purvabhadrapada Sun & Venus (atmakaraka), Punarvasu Moon (amatyakaraka)

in Because This Is My First Life, she plays a broke writer who despite being a good daughter is not appreciated by her family at all, and despite being good at what she does, faces trouble in her workplace and is overall just going through a not so good time . As I've said before, Jupiter natives go through their Saturn Mahadasha as young adults and this phase is a difficult one where they have to work very very hard to get things done and make any kind of progress. Most K-dramas that focus on the adversities of life, as experienced by a 20 something probably has a Jupiter dominant native as its protagonist.

in general, the reason why Jupiter dominant men & women dominate Korean entertainment, be it music or dramas, is because of the kind of content that Korean entertainment focuses on and the kind of people that the Korean public chooses to support. K-Dramas are known for their complex plots, often focusing on people at conflict with their values and ideas, struggling with their conscience, facing life's challenges and overcoming adversity; class struggles, portrayal of wealth/lack of it, rising to the top, underdogs emerging as winners etc. These are inherently Jupiterean.

Even with Korean music, it has a unique system in place where idols have to "train" for several years before they make their debut. Being hardworking and being an "ace" who excels in several areas is prided on in Korea; in such a culture, it makes sense why Jupiter dominants emerge as the ones on the very top of the food chain.

Now, we'll talk about some male actors😋😌

Lee Minho has Mars in Punarvasu & Mercury in Punarvasu (his atmakaraka & amatyakaraka)

Honestly, his entire filmography is very Jupiter coded 🤣 The role that made him a household name was that of rich, spoilt heir to an immensely wealthy family who is the most popular guy in school and leader of his rat pack.

His most successful role is that of a King in the drama The King: Eternal Monarch which is about an ancient Korean emperor who time travels through a portal into modern-day Korea. Both the fact that he's playing nobility as well as the fact that the drama features time travel/alternate reality esque things makes it VERY Punarvasu coded.

(Punarvasu's element is ether and its deity Goddess Aditi is the Mother Goddess and creator the universe itself, many time travel/movies about the nature of reality feature Jupiter natives)

The drama co-stars Kim Go-Eun, who I have already mentioned above as a Punarvasu girlie🥰

2. Gong Yoo is Punarvasu sun (amatyakaraka)

He starred in the movie "Silenced" which was based on a horrifying true story where he plays a teacher at a school who tries to stand up for and protect differently abled children who are routinely subject to extremely cruel and abusive treatment at a boarding school.

Punarvasu natives are known for standing up for others, especially those who do not have a voice/who are unable to stand up for themselves. These natives have a strong sense of justice and empathy and do not think twice about questioning authority.

His character in Coffee Prince is one which made him a household name and in this drama, he plays a chaebol heir who falls for a young guy who is actually a woman disguising herself as a guy 💀I feel like Jupiter men have at least one movie/show in their filmography that is very queer coded (ex: Keanu Reeves, Punarvasu Moon with My Own Private Idaho)

His most well known character is that of Goblin in the drama of the same name, where he plays an immortal who seeks salvation. Very Punarvasu coded.

This is just a personal observation but I've noticed how many Punarvasu men have an androgynous vibe 🥵

3.Kim Woo Bin is Punarvasu sun (atmakaraka) and mercury

His breakout role was that of a wealthy chaebol heir in the drama, The Heirs.

Playing the CEO's son or the CEO, who is initially arrogant and then faces different trials and tribulations and ultimately redeems himself is a common Kdrama trope and I've noticed that the actors picked for these parts the most tend to be Jupiter-dominant.

4.Song Joong Ki has Vishaka moon & saturn (his atmakaraka)

Vishaka is a rakshasa gana nakshatra and I'd previously observed how many mafia movies feature rakshasa gana natives as the main leads. Joong-ki's Vincenzo sees him play a mafia lawyer.

His character is Arthdal Chronicles (featuring fellow Jupiter girlie, Kim Ji Won) is also very Jupiter coded. Its about the birth of civilization and life in the ancient world. Joong Ki plays the leader of his clan.

5.Park Seo Joon has Purvabhadrapada moon (his amatyakaraka)

He is one of those actors who plays himself in every show/movie he does. This means all his characters are charming, slightly awkward or a little dumb, but good natured and caring individuals who go above and beyond for others. This is like a quintessential Jupiter man trope.

Especially his character in Fight My Way, is VERY Jupiter coded and features fellow Jupiter native, Kim Ji-Won.

A slightly stupid but endearingly adorkable guy who works a low end job and trains to be a boxer whilst looking out for his friends and loved ones? Especially his whole side arc with his ex gf on the show is such a Jupiter guy thing; to forgive a woman and be there for her even though she never cared for him and only kept him around because he was sooo nice to her and did everything for her. I've seen this happen with many Jupiter guys because as Claire said in her video these are the nice guys who women keep in the friend zone because even though they're perfect and extremely courteous, women don't feel like they could be a serious partner.

His character in Itaewon Class explores Jupiter in a different way. He is a struggling businessman who is engaged in a long drawn out battle with a chaebol and finally emerges victorious in the end. Despite the chaebol's petty and below the belt tactics, Seo-joon's character always took the high road and held on to his principles and conducted himself with integrity. Jupiter natives are almost always destined to be the bigger person.

6.Park Bogum has Mercury in Punarvasu as his atmakaraka

He rose to fame for playing a motherless prodigy on Reply 1988. His character was a typical Jupiter one; he's very talented, successful and recognised for the same but he takes no pleasure in it and does not really indulge in the privileges it offers him.

His most famous role would be that of a Prince who falls in love with his eunuch (who is actually just a woman pretending to be a eunuch) in the drama Love in the Moonlight. Like I said before, Jupiter guys have at least one queer coded project in their filmography lol.

7.Park Hyung shik has Sun & Mars in Vishaka (his atmakaraka & amatyakaraka)

His most famous role is that of a CEO in the drama Strong Girl Bong Soon.

8.Yoo Ah In has Venus in Vishaka as his atmakaraka and Jupiter in Purvabhadrapada as his amatyakaraka

His character in the movie Burning represents the dark side of Jupiter men.

His drama Chicago Typewriter features him reincarnating in present day Korea after initially living in the 1930s.

Jupiter influence is visible in movies/shows that have tropes of alternate reality, reincarnation, time travel etc.

maybe i’m mistaken but.. the way the media treats louis has changed a bit. (not necessarily in a Good way just. different?) hear me out.. i was reading this shitty daily mail article that talked about harry’s 30th - and ofc it was filled with all kinds of daily mail typical nonsense. but when it predictably started listing off the “shortcomings” of the other 1d members and how they weren’t nearly as worthy of having their ass kissed as harry, louis’ bit wasn’t as bad as the others..? especially compared to the way they focused on liam’s alcoholism and had several paragraphs dedicated to insulting zayn.

they described him as “pint sized” and said his venues were “noticeably smaller than harry’s” (which, no fucking shit? holo was in the works starting back in 2013). the worst part was alluding to jay and fizzy’s deaths being some kind of “one direction curse”. other than that though - no mention of freddie, the airport arrest, the chile leak (which.. didn’t DM leak that..?), beef with H, tiffs with journalists, etc.

i just think it’s super weird that the worst insults they could come up with were calling him tiny and comparing his tour to H’s? it’s almost like the strategy they’ve collectively taken in the last year-ish is to downplay his success and aid in the gp not taking his solo career seriously (by minimizing any of his solo accomplishments/focusing on 1d/sexualizing or objectifying him) rather than being outright insulting and aggressive and throwing vitriol at him hoping he breaks.

could also just be that they were too busy lavishing so much nauseating praise on H that they surpassed their word count or they wanted to insinuate that louis was forgettable or not worth their time, but idk!

First, it’s actually very on-brand for an article about Harry Styles’ birthday to consist mostly of insults about the other 1D guys. The fact that this is 2024 but media still feel the need to do this belies the hollowness of the Harry Styles hype.

After three years of build-up in 1D (2013-15) and eight years of industry propping him up, giving Harry Styles the access to the biggest songwriters and producers in the industry, the best venues money and power can buy, Azoff clients and adjacent saying his farts don’t smell, movie roles handed to him on a silver platter, with Christopher Nolan no less?, iconic Phoebe Waller-Bridges making a music video with him, Chloe Zhao saying he’s the second coming of Christ, Bono loving him more than his own child, even Billie Eilish and Miley Cyrus wanting to work with him, bought Grammys over Beyoncé etc., and this is the best they can do for his birthday? That Harry is “better than the rest of 1D”?

DM sounds a little like Harries on Twitter boasting about Harry Styles’ streams, or his wealth, or his Grammys and stadium tours, all of which amounts to the same boast: look what industry can create.

Look what they did with someone so white, bland, and pretty. Look at the money machine they built from a guy so vaguely defined as to have no identity at all. Harry Styles says nothing, supports nothing, sings about nothing, stands for nothing. Harry’s convictions are those of Jeff Azoff & friends. He truly lives up to his name: all style, absolutely no substance.

But Harry has… numbers. Harries (and media) cling onto numbers like peasants worshipping the god of hard currency. They love that money. The way they boast about Harry’s numbers is a little scary, to be honest. It suggests that there’s nothing else they like about him.

We can also tell, nine years later, that Harry isn’t the deep-thinking romantic poet he was painted to be, the one who cared about social issues and community, the one who thought deeply about human relationships and love, the one who cared for his fans enough to speak to us like family, to treat us with care, to do one-on-one fan service, to look genuinely happy in our presence, to look and act grateful even as those words pass his lips onstage AND off, to measure the people he works with with genuine, heartfelt friendship and not only because of their power and influence.

Because it’s very clear, nine years later, who that person in One Direction was. It’s the guy who never put 1D down, who, despite everything that has happened since, values the journey and can articulate it with all of the bittersweet authenticity to his experience. It’s the guy whose album was delayed for years because his first solo single competed a little too hard with Harry’s.

To your other point about press being nicer to Louis this year, other people have noticed the same thing, that Louis has been winning touring awards and other peripheral awards not central to the music industry. He isn’t going to walk the Brits or Grammys red carpet, and he won’t be nominated for VMAs or Aria awards.

But Louis isn’t even supposed to have a solo performing career in 2024. After 2017, the industry shut him out of radio and streaming. Faith In The Future was shut out of critical reviews. He started touring with a 1500 capacity venue. He isn’t supposed to be able to sell arenas, let alone stadiums. He wasn’t supposed to set a livestream world record— not when Niall did one the same year. Louis isn’t supposed to be friends with indie musicians, or have a reputation as “rock ‘n roll royalty”— having been shut out of the BBC. He isn’t supposed to tour the biggest venues in Australia. He isn’t supposed to sell arenas in Poland or Romania or Finland or Turkey. He isn’t supposed to create his own festival, give fans the first festival completely free, and showcase young, upcoming bands. Louis wasn’t supposed to be in the position to nurture any band, was he? He was supposed to be ancient history by now. They all were supposed to kneel before the legendary Harry Styles and disappear.

But Louis is selling upwards of 700k tickets for his second tour, and here we are, Harries following his every move, Larries relying on him to launder Harry’s image, and DM having to acknowledge that Louis is successfully, happily touring and making music on his own terms, with his own employees, singing his own lyrics to his enthralled audiences. He doesn’t take the bait to compare himself to his bandmates, nor relive old fights, nor stir up band controversy. He doesn’t talk badly about the other men’s relationships or families. He’s the only one who has watched Niall’s and Liam’s concerts and publicly supports all the guys’ careers. If the worst they can say is that Louis isn’t Harry Styles, thank God he isn’t. Thank god he stayed himself, went through the fires and came out better. One Direction mythology has eroded over the years, but at least Louis remained good, inside and out. Not perfect, but human, trying, and genuinely, actually good.

Who really knows why media can show some positivity to Louis now. I am cautious about any real change. I guess the rest of 2024 will be revealing. I’ve been waiting for so long that I don’t really expect anything different. We’ll see.

Microfic: Crown of Thorns

The first time he saw him (since the War, since the trials, since they were boys, really) was in the National Gallery. He stared across the gallery hall at the slim figure standing before a pièta, his silver blond hair shining in the soft overhead lights. He found himself making his way over to him in a daze, half-expecting it to be someone else, a stranger. Draco didn’t even look over at him when he finally reached him, only twitched his lips in an amused smirk. Harry tried to focus on the painting, but felt his attention sliding back to the man beside him - for he was a man now, five years later, only a trace of boyhood left in the soft curve of his cheek.

“You know, Potter,” said Draco in a low murmur, “I don’t know much about Muggle religion, but I could swear he looks like you did that day.”

And in that moment, Harry realised that he had been running from that memory for so long, from the pain and the fear like acrid smoke in his lungs. He looked at the painting, the limp figure of the thorn-crowned man in his mother’s arms. His chest tightened, and he tried to take a steadying breath, but it came out ragged, broken. Draco watched him, eyes softening.

“That day,” said Draco, “I remember thinking, if he’s gone, that’s it, I could run to the ends of the earth and never outrun what was coming for me. But then…” He chuckled softly. “When it turned out you were alive, I had never been so relieved. You brought me to the light that day, Potter.”

After a moment, when Harry had swallowed back the grief and exhausted tears, Draco said, "Come on. Let's get you a cup of tea." Liam signed switching off his phone once he landed at the airport. Ignoring the onslaught of texts and messages that arose from the TMZ article on his divorced. 

  It was never his plan to be 30, divorced and sulking back to his childhood home. Yet here he was. Craving a long hug from mum and an ice cold beer.

Chris laid out on the deck, letting the Australian sun warm his body, in nothing but sunglasses and board shorts he was finally getting into the grove of relaxing until a sudden jerk of his deck chair meant he was hitting the ground.

  “Holy shit! Joel!”

  Joel was Liam’s best mate from high school.

  He pulled his old friend into a bro hug.

  “Good cause you’re coming to the pub tonight.”

  “Is that where they’re having the reunion?”

  “Nah mate can’t we just hang out here.”

  “Fine. One beer though.”

  He grabbed his beer from the barman and made his way through the crowded pub, offering “Heys” and “Good to see you’s” until he landed in a quiet spot in the back. Sulking down with a sigh and sipped his beer, watching the scenes in front of him. 

  It was comforting to be home, familiar sights, faces and smells but couldn’t help the pit in his stomach of feeling like an outsider.

  “Y/N, Hey, shit look at you!” Liam beamed when his eyes connected with yours, pulling him out of his haze. You couldn’t help but spot the hint of sadness on his face. 

  He couldn’t believe his eyes. You looked more beautiful since he last saw you, relaxed with your hair out, a little textured, clearly air dried after a late afternoon dip. Your skin pink from sun exposure, in its early stages of what was sure to develop into a tan. His eyes scanned over your body, the summery dress leaving little to the imagination, with your strong legs on full display and ample chest held together by a thin piece of string. 

  “Same old me… move over” The large man scooted on the bench, opening the space for you to sit down, drink in hand. While it was a two-person bench, his sheer size left little space between the two of you, his knees touching yours. Moving his arm to drape across the back, he gave you a little more room but now you were borderline engulfed by his arm. A tinge of nostalgia hitting you remember the same position, lying down in bed, your body snuggled up into his warm armpit. 

  “What you been up to? Heard you got a job in the city.” 

  “Yeah, but unlike you I’m not too good to come home once in a while.” You took a swig of your drink, feeling a little tipsy at the familiar taste of alcohol. 

  “I’m here aren’t I?” He quipped at you. 

  “Barely. It’s not like you to sit in a corner and sook.” Reminiscing about all those nights, he spent singing on top of the tables in the very pub you sat talking in now. 

  “Fuck everyone’s been calling me a sook lately.”

  “Cause you’re acting like one… what’s got your panties in a bunch?”

  “Do you not get internet at your joint or something?”

  “No, I just don’t spend my days googling my high school ex. So, where’s Hannah Montana?”

  “In LA.”

  “Why? does she not like it here?”

  “No, I just didn’t think I’d take my ex-wife to my high school reunion.”

  “EX Wife?”

  “Since 3 days ago yeah.” He took another swig of beer.

  “Shit, Li I’m sorry.”

  “Nah it’s fine, it’s fucking whatever.”

  “Well, it’s not “whatever” you had a connection with someone, it hurts when you lose them. And nothing anyone says can really make the pain feel better.”

  “Is that how you felt when I went to LA?” A sudden tension fell over you two. How could he ask that?

  “Well, you’re in a much better spot than me now.” He shuffled in his seat realising he hit a soft spot.

  “I’m sorry it was selfish.”

  “What do you think would have happened if I didn’t go?” He pushed.

  “We probably would have stayed together, brought a house on the beach, I’d be on my third baby by now and you’d keep doing local TV, maybe take me to the Logies hahaha.”

  “I did… like twice and your assistant would always answer and tell me you’re not taking personal calls at this time or some shit, when I saw you shacked up with Miss Best Of Both Worlds, I stopped.”

  “I don’t think there’s such a thing as too late ya know.” He piped.

  “Well, you reckon it’s too late for us but who’s to say it’s too late maybe it’s just the beginning.”

  “You’ve had too many drinks.” You laughed him off

  “No Y/N I’m serious.” He grabbed your wrist, stopping you along the shore. The tide coming as the water’s edge tickled your bare feet. 

  “Hearing you describe what could of been… honestly sounds pretty good right now. You think I’ve gone all too big for my boots, but this place is still home to me ya know… why do you think I came here when everything went to shit?” You looked up at him, barely making out his facial expression in the dark. From what you could see, he was a broken boy, he seemed wrecked, and you decided take his words seriously. 

  You sighed

  “Cause when you don’t know what to do you should turn around and go from where you started.” 

  “Exactly but I think I know what I want to do next”

  His hand, falling to your face, thumb rubbing your cheek, he leaned in and you breathe caught in your throat. Your body once a little chilly now warmed by the sensation of his mouth on yours. What started with a tender kiss turned into a deep passionate embrace. It was different to all those times before, mainly due to his now beard face rubbing against your skin and the reality that his kissing skills had definitely improved. 

  “Liam...” You pushed him off you, hands grazing the hair exposed on his unbuttoned chest, he felt firm and warm. Like the perfect mattress you could sleep peacefully on top of him.

Laughing you both passed, looking into each other’s eyes, you kissed his salty lips again as he held you against him in the water, under the moonlight. And in that moment, it felt like no time had passed at all.

Losing My Cool

A debate breaks out at my office once a week.

It always starts with Brad, the portrait of a male executive, and his booming voice echoing around the space as people join in.

Beyonce or Taylor Swift?

I was new to the office when it first started. It was office chit-chat at first. Water-cooler chatter born from something Brad’s wife saw on TikTok. It was a dumb debate made up of parasocial facts and made-up figures. Easy celebrity gossip. They are both billionaires who probably wouldn’t be affected if an average white guy named “Brad” railed against them.

It wasn’t until last week when Brad came in smelling of condescension and phrased it differently.

“Who is cooler: Beyonce or Taylor Swift?”

The debate was months old, a revival of a hot topic from the summer of 2023 that has now become a relic of a pop culture reference. Still, Brad was so excited that he pounced on me when I didn’t answer.

“Come on,” Brad said. “Everyone knows who is cooler. Just say it.”

Everyone else in the office said it: Beyonce’s cooler. Then, their moment of antagonized fun was over, and they went back to typing. The bullpen of onlookers watched and waited: they wanted me to say that Taylor Swift was lame and uncool, and I would get extra points if I joined in with a “she can’t even sing.”

But, I didn’t say anything.

This is how I learned that I never really knew what cool was anyway.

I stopped being honest about what I thought was “cool” when I was thirteen.

It all hit me when I was in sixth grade. I had a mild, middle-school crush on a boy from my math class. In the hallway before class, we exchanged iPods and flirted in the lackluster, sweaty way that only middle schoolers do. One day, he laughed when he saw my most recently played music.

“Beyonce? She always sounds the same,” he said to me. “Try The Front Bottoms.”

I loved Beyonce at that age. The morning before, I had practiced her vocal runs on “Halo” until my brother told me that I was annoying. It was the same year that “Single Ladies” swept YouTube, driving people into a craze of black leotards and obscene moves. That year, I was obsessed with Beyonce.

Then, I was embarrassed. A boy my age spoke with conviction and authority about Beyonce’s value and, suddenly, it all dropped in front of me. He was an arbiter of taste and a definer of what was good. I was in the wrong with him.

Cool was an underground band that no one had heard of, someone on the fringes or up and up that would have a one-hit moment and retire. Beyonce was too Sasha Fierce. She was in a girl band and how lame is that, right?

Every other bubble gum pop icon: Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, or any other powerful, femme hitmaker was an unspoken no. My first generation iPod touch full of teeny boppers was dull, so banal to him.

That boy never spoke to me outside of class again, but I didn’t try anymore. I learned a lesson I would never unlearn that day: as a girl, you can never do or have anything “cool.”

Cool is a judgment on women and non-binary people. It is the chill, subtle way of saying “This is what I think is right. Here is where you are not that. Uncool- bad.”

Most women and non-binary people have defenses against this, an equally subtle counter-move of avoidance. Most men won’t see it in plain sight, but it is in every conversation: an unwillingness to share because they do not want to be contemptuous. It is laid out like a response sheet: if he says A, then the answer is B. A perfect example comes from “What is your favorite movie?”

“What is your favorite movie?”

The answer is not: “It’s Little Women.”

The correct answer is: “Oh. What’s yours?”

If they say “Pulp Fiction,” then the answer is: “True Romance.”

So on and so forth.

It might read like a cheat sheet, but it’s something women everywhere have done since the dawn of time: dodging the judgment of men by omission.

I fell in love for the first time when I was a senior in college. Scratch that; I fell in deep infatuation with a boy who called me when he was drunk to tell me how funny I was. He had the look of a tall-dark-and-handsome Peter Parker. That year, I had dyed my hair seventeen times to make sure it was the right kind of Mary Jane red so it felt written in the stars.

Matt was a fraternity boy, obnoxiously always drunk but turning each moment into a funny story that I could relay to female friends later so it felt worth it. Matt would play music constantly: in the shower, in the car, in my bed, as he was falling asleep, and I was wide awake listening to his Goth Babe remixes. He was cool about music in that he had good taste and was judgmental about it. We connected when I said that I listened to Open Mic Eagle.

I never told him that, before I met him on weekends, I blasted and screamed Taylor Swift.

One night, after too many whisky sours, I followed him back home, walking ten steps behind like a puppy waiting to be praised or kicked. Matt played Poo Shiesty on the way home, blasting “Back In Blood” through his water-damaged speakers. We were halfway through the uphill walk through the Midwest winter when the song started for a fourth time.

“Again?” I asked.

“You don’t like Pooh Shiesty now?” Matt asked. He had been dancing in the snow moments before, but he stopped as soon as I spoke, looking at me with accusation.

“I liked it the first time,” I said.

“What do you want to listen to then?” Matt asked.

“Try ‘Cruel Summer,’” I said with a smile. I said it like a joke, knowing Matt would never play Taylor Swift, not even for me. A part of me hoped he would say: “Whatever you want, babe.”

He didn’t. He laughed and then mimed vomiting.

“What the fuck?” he said.

I started to argue but realized I would never win. I let him lecture me on why Taylor Swift was dumb; a graceless lack of musical talent, in his opinion. How could I, someone interested in music, like something like that? Was I so basic? Was I serious? I couldn’t have been serious, in his opinion. If I was serious, that was gross.

He kept playing “Back In Blood” until we got to my house. I told him I was tired and he left, bouncing to a party down the block while still blasting the same song.

I fell asleep crying to “champagne problems.”

In 2017, Ed Sheeran released his studio album “Divide.” It had top hits like “Shape of You” and “Perfect” that repeated on the radio until listeners knew every chord. People who worked in customer service at this time could probably recite every word of the “Perfect” chorus like it was slam poetry because that is how much recognition it got.

The same year, Bruno Mars released 24K Magic. This album and its titular groove, “24k Magic,” had high highs: the best example being when Zendaya performed the song on Lip Sync Battle, clad in an ensemble that made her look just like Bruno. Each song on the album is catchier than the last. The album quickly became a part of pop culture, leading teens to my high school to ask each other to prom with signs that read “You’re What I Like” while blasting the song “That’s What I Like.”

Both of these albums outperformed their previous hits. Both of these men launched international tours in March of 2017. Both of these men made millions on their songs, merch, and overall success of the tour.

Not once in 2017 was I asked: “Ed Sheeran or Bruno Mars?”

“Just say it,” Brad said. He focused more directly on me this time, leaning against my desk as he spoke.

“Beyonce or Taylor Swift?”

I bit down on my tongue and tried not to react too visually.

I knew I couldn’t say Taylor Swift. I thought this would be over with the overwhelming success and fun of the Eras tour, the release and re-release of records like they were being made overnight, and the obvious love that most women had for her collection of work on full display. Still, most men loved to hate her. The groups of co-workers who stared at me, waiting for me to answer, were the same people who had spent months complaining about how she “ruined the Chiefs game.”

It felt equally unfair to say Beyonce. It was only a decade before that people refused to think of her as anything more than a pop act. The launch of the Lemonade album coupled with an insane Coachella performance and hit after hit asserted Beyonce as a force to be reckoned with always. It also cemented her as a cultural icon. Yet, these men were choosing her as cool now only because they wanted to pit one woman against another.

Could Beyonce not have her success? Did she have to be compared? Or was she being compared simply to bring Taylor down?

Both of these women were billionaires and record breakers and instead of celebrating that, all of the men around me were putting them in a hypothetical cage match and making me choose.

Could we not let both these women have success and celebrate them for it? No, this was America’s new favorite misogynistic pastime and I had to participate. But, no matter what way I answered, I was losing.

I had been losing for years. Every time I’d changed my answer to appease a man, borrowed his opinion as mine to avoid being judged, or bitten my tongue so I’d be considered “cool” came flooding back to me.

I was never cool, but I had been playing it for years. Now, I was exhausted.

Brad looked at me, still waiting for me to answer. I shook my head.

It was never worth an answer.

i have had mostly fictparas and fictparacosms throughout my life, so if you're in their respective fandoms you can interact, but be nice and understand that my interpretation of the characters fits what i want. it's my brain and my coping mechanism. all paras and paracosms are tagged #name of thing*, especially so fictparas dont show up in fandom tags.
