Julie Cockburn

Julie Cockburn's work is best defined by its delicate craftsmanship and by the transformation of everyday and found objects into works of art. Through the manipulation of found items and images, Cockburn evokes a sense of both the new and the spontaneous.

Cockburn studied at Central St Martins School of Art and Design and Chelsea School of Art, London. Through the combination of second-hand objects and creative labour, Cockburn contradicts the generic and mass-produced with something crafted, imbuing her intellectually and physically worn objects with value. Techniques such as the childlike embroidered patterns that feature on found photographs and printed images, draw the viewer in to a sculpted journey of labour and creation. Cockburn's work challenges the means by which things are seen and visually digested, shown by the playful visual exploration of the materials she employs. Cockburn draws inspiration from many places: the decorative arts and traditional craftsmanship; Picasso, Dali’s jewellery, the Ming dynasty Chinese pottery, and Japan’s art and culture.

I am reminded of John Baldessari’s manipulated mass media images but Cockburn’s careful soft colour embroidered shapes suggest memory and universality. She brings a Wes Anderson nostalgic vibe with her neat poppy graphic additions creating visual poetry on found patinated scans of old postcards and pictures.

A couple of months ago I shared a wider pic of the Bryce Natural Bridge. This time I'm sharing this close up to give a little different perspective. I like having both because you can see different things. Any way you look at it, natural bridges and arches are still fascinating structures! To get this shot I used my bigger lens. The bridge was far enough away that the focus isn't as different as I would have liked, but you can still see the the different depths due to light and focus. Monday………… learning from the past whilst moving forwards into a new week & the Full Moon & new light……….. illuminating the past & making plans for the future……. Looking at where we’ve come from & looking at the light within…….whilst also looking up at all this new shining light that is being laid out before us………it’s going to be a big powerful illuminating Full Moon on Wednesday, so lots to look forwards to………but aa ever also a time to stay ever peaceful………… (Stumbled across old achoo photo whilst digging out Christmas decorations…..so remember this being taken & the photographer who wanted me to say sausages & me being me, even then, having a little debate about whether I should be saying sausages or cheese. I indicated the latter was preferable, photographer wasn’t having any of it, so hence somewhat forced half smile. I recommend listening to No.1 by BoA. She's a K-pop (1st Generation) and J-pop singer and dancer.

“No.1” was released on 2002-04-12. The original is in Korean, but a Japanese and English versions were also released.

Few people know that “No.1” was also popular in the Philippines, especially the Japanese version.

Personally, I prefer the Japanese version than the original Korean. I guess because Nihongo is much closer to Tagalog.

Oh, if you're looking for the English version, it's hard to find the original. Most of what's available online are covers and unofficial translations.

There is also a rumour/controversy that the English version included in the official Japanese album was not performed by BoA herself. But no one has confirmed nor tried to verify it.
