Inspo was movies like Clueless & the documentary Kid 90. I actually loved this story so much I completely reworked it and turned it into an original novel.

Important to note that this fic isn't really a romance. It's more about platonic love and friendships than it is about Frans romance.

Summary:

That’s the mantra Sans lives by, and even though Frisk, one of the cutest girls according to all of his friends, catches a crush of epic proportions on him, he makes it a point to keep his distance. 🍄 hmmm since it’s lesbian visibility week let’s go with cirrus/cumulus. i think they were aware of one another in the pit, even intrigued by one another but neither made a move. not until after they were summoned when one evening cirrus got into a scrap with dewdrop and cumulus jumped in to break it up. when dew accidentally swung on her, cirrus lost her whole shit. took aether and mountain holding her back and even then, they got scratched to shit and bit. cumulus, with her eye swollen, walked over to her and gently stroked her face murmuring reassuring words to her. dewdrop felt so guilty he apologized to not only cumulus but also cirrus. it was the last time they ever (physically) fought and every time dew saw cumulus with that black eye it made him sick to his stomach. and the girls? never slept without one another since.

First person perspective UNLESS the prose is done well. Honestly prose construction is everything to me and I'm incredibly picky. If something doesn't read right to me then I can't get through it or I enjoy it a lot less. There's no hard or fast guidelines to this. Sometimes things just don't stick with me.

A Year in (Book) Review: My 2024 Reading Journey 📚

#11 - Silhouette by Justin Richards

Science fiction / Doctor Who #97 / 258 pages / published 2014 / Finished Jan. 18

One Sentence Review: A fun, in-character jaunt into my favorite two-hearted, time-traveling alien, with an interesting mystery, fun references to past incarnations, and a hilarious, homicidal potato-man - though it reads more like a TV script translated to prose than a book in its own right most of the time.

A Few More Thoughts (Spoilers)

It wasn't bad, but it was definitely one of the weaker books I've read so far, and neither is it one of the stronger Doctor Who books as far as details, description, and introspection are concerned. The plot was interesting, the characters' voices - especially Twelve's - were on point, and Strax was one of the biggest highlights, but the narration is more distant than I like.

I was surprised and impressed with how perfectly I could hear Twelve's voice - Scottish accent and all, somehow - in my head as I read. His characterization was perfect. I found the human "weapons" to be very interesting. Affinity, Empath, and Silhouette were a great touch.

There’s not much I took away from it other than an interesting read and a few hours being entertained by a new Doctor Who adventure, to be honest, but there doesn't always have to be a deeper meaning. Entertainment in its own right is fine, too.

Really weird/bizarre formats. The first paragraph is easily a whole page of text, no breaks, basic mischaracterizations, ships that aren't tagged showing up that I do not want, prose that is impossible to engage in etc.

I guess at the moment, doing that PZH Lyle/Querl fic about him trying to break away from EarthGov and finding out that he really is in no position to leave - he has no autonomy and he never did really. I would write this I guess because I am not sure who would even do this. Other than this, give Bart a solo series and let Waid pick him back up, dust him off.

ahhh oh no.......... i would probably say to eat well (joongdok/high school orv oneshot) for its inclusion of domestic fluff, highschool au, food as love, and banter... but i'm also biased towards no signal, cause i do write a fair amount of bitesized au concept oneshots, and for its more serious content + prose style..?? also because it got some reallyreallyreally gorgeous fanart by @furekami!!!

7. Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

Ooof why did you ask me this?? These kinds of questions area always hard for me to answer 😅 But I think I did manage to find one passage that I like from Without Water, my fic about the ordeal Katara went through as she tried to heal an unconscious Aang between Book 2 and Book 3:

After that wave of grief faded away, she lifted her head. She was so close to Aang’s face that if he opened his eyes, she would have a hard time explaining to him what she was doing. But his eyes remained closed, the fringes of his eyelashes like dark lines that sealed them shut. He had grown pale over the weeks, and the shock of black hair that had grown in made him look…different. Like someone she didn’t know. The only part of him that was still Aang was the blue arrow that graced his forehead. For even his face no longer belonged to him—a motionless, unchanging blank. Katara was starting to forget what he looked like when he smiled.

This paragraph is near the end, where it’s starting to dawn on Katara what exactly Aang means to her, and also when she’s nearly stretched to the limit because she has done everything she can, and he still hasn’t woken up, and she isn’t sure if he ever will. I’m proud of this passage because it’s more than just a description of how Aang’s appearance has changed--it is also about the emotional impact of those changes, how those changes affect the way she thinks about him. To me, that’s the ultimate goal of writing description - to not only paint a picture but to also attach meaning to that picture that goes below the surface. It’s not easy to do and definitely takes effort, and I am always working to improve in that department!

14. What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?

Oh man. It's gotta be the advice to make writing more interesting by using synonyms. This isn't bad advice per se, but it's SO easy to overuse and abuse. Synonyms can definitely break up the monotony of using the same word over and over. But one doesn’t necessarily need to say, for example, “knuckleheaded fool” when something simpler like “idiot” would probably fit better. Also, words that are synonyms are not perfect substitutes for each other, so they often can’t be used interchangeably - this is where it pays to understand the nuances and implications that each word carries. It’s better to understand what a word means and where and when to use it, than to stuff a sentence full of synonyms when simpler words and phrasing would suffice.

23. If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, which would it be and why?

Probably Midnight Meditations. I'm happy with the story itself, but it was the first piece of creative writing I've done after a 10-year hiatus, and I've grown a lot as a writer in the past year since I've been writing ATLA fanfic. I would edit MM for style, like more concrete imagery, description, and metaphors.

35. Would you ever kill off a canon character?

Why am I not surprised you picked this one Hmmm, good question! For now, I would say that if I had to kill off a canon character, it would be a side character. If it was a major character, I would have to have a whole story around it, and I don't have any ideas like that right now. But if I have the right story idea, it could be any character, really--no one is safe 🔪😈 If I ever come up with a story idea like that, you'll be the first to know 😌
