Oil & Gold
Cara Romero, 2021
The starting point of the California Indian genocide began with the arrival of Spanish missionaries and continues today. Through waves of colonization and layers of industries, the Indigenous people of California, especially along the coast, have been stripped of their inherent rights. There are 19 tribes along the coast to California that never received their federal recognition in the mid-1800s due to the state of California failing to ratify their treaties. It was by no mistake that these Tribes traditional lands were nestled within regions rich with gold and oil.
This image is featuring Naomi White Horse and Crickett Tiger wearing regalia of Central Coast people made by Leah Mata Fragua, one dipped in gold and the other dipped in oil standing in front of a Southbay Los Angeles refinery. The photo aims to transform historical narratives, educate, and increase dialogue about the 18 unratified treaties. Centering around issues of cultural representation, erasure, cultural activism, land stewardship practices, and the genocide and displacement of the first peoples in the name of gold and oil.

you can find other zoro fics here: Naomi's archive
pairing: zoro x fem reader
tags: hurt/comfort, fluff, consumption of alcohol
summary: One would expect the swordsman to unwind after a battle, but there are times when he can't help but think. Alcohol doesn't always come in handy when a specific crewmate he grew fond of cuddled a tad bit too close to his heart.
word count: 3.3k
theme song: 'Daylight' by David Kushner
A/N: It can be imagined with both anime and opla Zoro. I don't know if he's slightly ooc or not, but I genuinely wanted to dig into this side of a relationship with the swordsman. The awkward times when he's getting used to it and simply accepting everything as a new part of his life.
I didn't forget about my multi chapter fiction, I just didn't find the inspiration for the 8th chapter. I couldn't help but write this for my own comfort and I want to mention that this original art of @tea917339 inspired me (check it out, it's absolutely amazing!!!)
I'm always open for your opinions and comments, so don't be shy about sharing your thoughts with me! <3
Tumblr media
Usually, nights with the Straw Hats were lively, even after battles that left the crew members injured and bleeding. They would pick each other up and cheer up by simply bickering — that's what Zoro thought.
The same way Luffy's hand extended to help him back on his feet after he plopped down on the ground to rest. The same way Zoro reassured Chopper after the kid tried his best not to get emotional afterwards. The same way Sanji threw some remarks and the swordsman spat back in annoyance. And, for fuck’s sake, Nami reminded him for the tenth time that day he owes her berry for something he completely forgot about. Usopp was sighing in relief every time he remembered they escaped with life again while Robin agreed with a soft smile on her face. Truly, it was almost insane — Zoro wouldn't exactly call that a miracle because he's doubtful of its existence.
However, he couldn't bring himself to cheer up once the celebration of their victory was over and everyone went into their rooms. He was on the night watch and all he found himself capable of doing was burying in memories of all kinds, be it happy or not. With not enough alcohol in his system yet, it was rather hard to push those thoughts into the back of his head.
The swordsman sat on the deck, his back resting against the wooden cabin. Hidden from prying eyes, he found peace in the temporary silence. Rare were the times when the crew was so peaceful and it was usually during the night, when they were asleep, because otherwise they would've caused a mayhem.
The side of his mouth curled upwards at that thought. It was equally annoying and endearing, since in the months spent with them he found a lot of things about himself. Like the fact that he found his crew to be a family, like the way he sometimes found peace even in the chaos caused by them.
Or like the presence he grew way too fond of along the way. That witch — she truly was one, judging by the effect she had on him. Only a spell could've made his mind get so clouded, only some unknown force could've managed to soften his edges so well. She joined the crew from the first day and he believed that a spell had been casted upon him since the first time they gazed at each other.
Right. Zoro gulped down. The effect she had on him was equally annoying and pleasant.
Annoying because he should've focused on his promise to Kuina, not get lost in between fairytales. He wasn't by any means the charming prince riding a white horse and he didn't intend on becoming one anytime soon. It filled him up with feelings unknown to him. Zoro might be a fan of adventures and he had rather insane ideas — as one might say —, but such sentiments were an entirely new path to walk on.
First and foremost, it bothered him the fact that he wasn't sure he could fulfill both his promises and whatever the fuck was going on between him and the witch. He couldn't pinpoint what was happening, it was all in a blur, even if everything was clearing up whenever he saw her.
That's when he's reminded why he likes their relationship — what kind of, he didn't know. When he saw her, there were always sparkles in her eyes and the smile on her face would grow wider, lines of happiness appearing on her cheeks. The curl of her lips would make his heart skip a few beats and he would relax his shoulders unconsciously. Eyes filled with joy looked at him as if he was the very reason behind her purest sensations.
Also, not to mention how warm the depths of his chest felt when she was near. The heat would rise to his cheeks, which he sometimes found uncomfortable, but Zoro never ran away. A side of him wished so badly to go the other way and never look back, ignore her and those stupid damned feelings, but he never gathered enough courage to do so. Every single time, he would remain stuck, with his eyes stuck on her frame and fingers aching to touch and lips tingling to kiss.
God fucking dammit.
With a curse rolling off his tongue casually as he closed his eyes, the back of his head collided with the wooden wall he rested his back against. Zoro sat with his knees bent and feet planted onto the floor, only his Wado Ichimoji in his proximity. With its hilt glued to his shoulder, the sheathed sword was in between his fingers. By that time, he held it for comfort.
If that's what he could call it. The swordsman wasn't sure what else to associate it with. Or was it familiarity? The white sword was the only memory he had of a long lost friend and his first home at the dojo, by the side of his sensei. It was the only object tying him to his past, to his beginning, to times when he was much weaker, but determined nonetheless.
To care about his promise was familiar. Zoro wouldn't give it up — proof was the simple fact that he still achieved to become the strongest swordsman in the world. One day, he will meet Mihawk again and when he does, he will be stronger than the first time he encountered him at Baratie.
Looking back, it's been so long since. So long since a new life appeared before his eyes and he accepted it with no hesitation. He was a pirate, a Straw Hat, Luffy's first mate. The swordsman swore to help his captain achieve his own dream.
Those promises were familiar. The erratic heartbeats caused by the witch weren't. The sensation settling in the pits of his stomach when her gentle fingers would brush over his arm weren't. It was foreign and it didn't sit well with him.
Kuina.
He still saw her face in his dreams sometimes and it was usually her ghost haunting him. Other times, in her place would be one of his friends and each time it was harder to fall asleep.
When awake, memories of her replayed so vividly in his mind. Swords clashing together and whistling as they cut the air in half. A grin brightening up Kuina's face when he would fall on his butt and cuss her out again. They promised that one of them would become the greatest, but he was the only one capable of that, because her bones lay in a grave somewhere far away.
Zoro opened his eyes and stared at the night sky with scars scattered all over it. A calming view, even if there was tumult inside of him, hidden in between ribs that broke with each new pump of his heart. His brown eyes fell to the floor and he crossed his arms on top of his knees, gripping the sword tighter. His chest puffed up with air when he inhaled and he let out a heavy sigh.
“Zoro?” a soft whisper made him jump out of his thoughts.
The swordsman snapped his head and he was greeted by the sight of someone he didn't even know he was searching for. A side of him wished to say something along the lines of “fuck off” while the other side desperately wanted to soak into her presence.
A witch, indeed.
His eyes ran up and down her figure. She didn't seem surprised to find him there, in a rather hidden spot, which meant she didn't search for too long. Did she even search for him or did she also wish to be alone for a while? The first place to search for someone during night shifts was the crows nest.
She held two bottles of what he guessed to be alcohol and she swung them carefully before stepping closer. His chest tightened and he found it harder to breathe, even if it was inevitably easier than before at the same time. For some reason, she had that effect on him.
Maybe he knew that reason all too well, but he just avoided thinking of it.
“You told me we'd drink something together,” she reminded him in that warm voice of hers.
The sweet melody that calmed his nerves.
He didn't know what kind of energy radiated off him, but her behavior was far more gentle than usual. She wasn't hesitant, the witch never hesitated around him, she was just mindful of her actions and words.
He didn't know why for a second he saw understanding in the curl of her lips when she crouched down. Unconsciously, Zoro knitted his eyebrows together in confusion at her gestures.
The bottles hit the floor and she let go of them. Her eyes sparkled like they always did, but there was something different that time — a warmth they held only when she comforted Chopper or encouraged Usopp. Warmth similar to the shy rays of the sun of the morning, when the cold is still lingering and there's a specific scent in the air. Gentleness he only ever saw in her, because Luffy's kindness was different.
A warmth so humane that was visible for the crew alone or those in need of it.
The witch recognized something in his demeanor and Zoro had no clue what that was about. He could only see it in her gaze.
“I suppose it isn't really the perfect time for me to butt in, hm?” she whispered.
Like a promise only for him to hear. A secret.
“How'd you find me here?” he found himself speaking before he thought it through.
The question made her shrug.
“I pick up easily on your energy. It's quite unmistakable, y'know?”
There it was — one of the main reasons why she had the nickname of Witch both on the ship and outside of it. She's spoken about that for a few times and he had to admit he understood what she meant. However, the swordsman only felt those “energies” (as she liked to call them) in specific moments. He remembers that time in Lougetown when everything felt like energy instead of palpable objects, the reason why he won that fight.
Sometimes he seriously wondered if she hadn't met his sensei at some point in her life.
“What is it like?” once again, he asked before thinking.
The witch pulled her lips in a tight line and hummed, gathering the right words to describe it. Her gaze bounced around and she grimaced once, when she probably found her choice of words to be unpleasant or inappropriate — she always scrunched her nose when it was difficult to find the proper terms.
“It's sharp, but warm. Kind of steady, constantly flickering. For example, Luffy's energy is always all around the place and Chopper's gets out of control easily. Robin has the steadiest energy of all of us, even if it was kind of… strange lately.”
Zoro arched his eyebrow at the last piece of information and only received a hand waving through the air.
“Ignore the last part, I'm still figuring it out myself. No need to worry.”
The swordsman knew the energy she was talking about was different than what he felt when she was in presence, but he wondered if whatever laid in her heart interfered with her ability to distinguish his being from the others.
He watched as the witch looked at the bottles next to him and then clicked her tongue, deep in thought.
“I don't know if they'd help you tonight, but I'll let you be.”
None of those words were accusatory. They were all coming from a place of kindness and patience.
Suddenly, her fingers curled around his bicep, below the bandana wrapped around his arm. Skin on skin, her touch was hot and pleasant, even if very confusing.
What was she thinking?
His puzzled feelings were written on his face. Uncertainty laid in his dark brown eyes and his fingers held onto the sword tighter. He didn't even notice when the grip on his Wado Ichimoji loosened up.
Her gaze was reassuring as ever and she gently rubbed her thumb into his tensed muscles.
Zoro had to at least admit to himself that vulnerability was uncomfortable. Without spoken words, she picked up on it.
“I don't know for sure if I'll get to sleep tonight, so you could cut your night shift in half.” She's having issues with nightmares again? he silently wondered. “I'll be in my room, reading. Do what you see fit.”
Instantly, she was back on her feet with her back straight and walked away. The swordsman didn't know what happened or what he should understand.
He was utterly and completely confused. What just happened?
Oh. The witch gave him space and time to think. She also told him where she was in case he decided to grip at the promise of comfort and hold tightly onto it. The opportunity laid right in front of him and he was the only one to decide whether he used it to his advantage or not.
Zoro didn't notice when his shoulders relaxed. His body wasn't as tense as a few minutes ago, his back didn't feel as stiff. The exhale he left wasn't heavy anymore.
The swordsman knew what this was about. Maybe it was the time to just accept his feelings and get on with it. He had to suck it up and deal with it, even if dealing with her wasn't the right way to word it out. It always felt more like she was dealing with him.
With closed eyes, he remembered the last time her lips brushed by his. Gosh, it was so hot and his blood was bubbling like lava in his veins. It wasn't an accident, he intended on kissing her back with fever, but he had a hard time accepting everything. It was… weird. Facing that reality was troublesome.
She has yet to lose her patience. The witch remained firm and each one of her questions were answered by gestures instead of words — something familiar for him. She was far more skilled with expressing herself even when sensitive topics came up.
That was a miracle. Her presence alone could be compared to a miracle because it was completely unexpected and somehow always caressing him the right way. It was scary how accurately she could read him and the same applied to him.
The sky before his eyes continued to sparkle with stars and he remained still in his place. His fingers caressed the scabbard of his sword as he blinked in the darkness, the chill air of the night invading his lungs.
It was complicated and so simple at the same time. Zoro knew the answer — he just had to come to terms with it.
Tumblr media
Just as age promised, the witch sat on the bed in her room with a blanket warming her up. The lamp on the nightstand by her side casted a golden light over the pages of a book sitting in her lap. It was hard to focus on the story — a captivating part of pirate's history, sometime before the appearance of Gold D. Roger.
Her thoughts were followed by the swordsman. Zoro's mood was… sad at best. She didn't expect to find him in that state, but she quickly came to the conclusion that leaving him alone might do him good.
She tapped her finger over the pages of the old book and clicked her tongue. Was it right to leave him? The witch never saw him in a similar mood and she also realized she didn't know how to help him. There could be a lot of ways to bring him back to earth or at least keep him afloat. Those ways were only known by him. All she could do was guess and hope for the best outcome.
Heavy footsteps echoed on the other side of the door. When it opened wide, there was Zoro's tall silhouette, his white sword in his hand and one bottle of alcohol in his other. He came closer, his face hard as a stone. The pink hue painting his cheeks was the only detail giving away the fact that he drank one of the bottles she brought hours ago.
“Why aren't you sleeping yet?” he said with a gruff voice as he plopped down on the mattress.
There were only a few hours left before the sun would rise up from the sea.
“You've probably guessed already,” she averted her eyes from his figure.
“Nightmares again?”
The witch only nodded, eyes focused on the book. Zoro let the sword against the couch.
“I won't fall asleep, so you could as well take a night off,” only then she looked at him again.
His darkened eyes have been locked on her since he entered the valley. The witch wanted to move, to eventually get away from his knowing gaze, but she knew there was no possible way to do it.
“Are you alright?” she blurted out.
She had to fill that silence with some kind of conversation. Maybe that wasn't exactly the wisest decision, considering his shoulders visibly tensed and he straightened his back. A frown appeared on her face. She regretted talking.
The witch figured out he needed more time to sort his thoughts.
“Why don't you go to sleep?” she tilted her head to the side. “The fight has worn us all out. You could rest for a while.”
“And you?”
“We'll be sailing for a few days. I can sleep ‘till afternoon.”
“Nothing will happen for as long as you're on this ship with us,” the reassurance slipped so easily. “Do you trust us?”
“More than anything,” the witch responded with a faint smile.
Several weeks ago, her answer and reaction would've been so different. She made so much progress since she first met them, her trust now fully laying in their palms. Long ago, she would've backed away at such a question and, if they were lucky enough, the witch would admit she “needs time to adjust”.
At first, all he did was lean close enough for his shoulder to touch hers. The swordsman only intended to enjoy some peace while he shared his booze with the witch. From time to time, she'd gulp from the bottle and then give it back to him before continuing her lecture. After each two minutes, the room would be filled by the rustling of pages.
It didn't last long until he fell into her trap and tiredness dragged him glued to her. With his head in her lap, Zoro bumped his nose in her thigh. The witch's fingers ran through his hair and he let out an audible exhale, eyes closing instantly. Greeted by darkness, he felt warm not only on the inside. The blanket she curled around herself earlier was now covering his upper body as he sunk into the soft mattress and her.
One of his hands curled around her knee and he dug his fingers into her flesh. Her leg jerked slightly at the unexpected touch, but when he tried to move away, she muttered a sweet “It's okay”, stopping his movements.
The oxygen in his lungs was exchanged with her perfume and he bit back a groan. Her voice was like a lullaby, even if there weren't many words rolling off her tongue. Zoro wasn't bothered by the light of the lamp, completely forgetting about the world around him once her fingers continued running through his hair.
His hand traveled up, until it fully rested on her thigh, the warmth of her body seeping through the thin material of her pants. Truth be told, he's never felt better.
She was a remedy. His remedy.
“Good night.”
Zoro heard her whisper solely because he was near her; otherwise he would've confounded it with the night breeze.
Maybe giving in to her affection isn't that bad.

Part 1. Part 2.
Tumblr media
The interdimensional portal in your living-room and yourself are looking at each other defiantly. At least if that thing had eyes you imagine it would do that.
You don’t like portals. Not that you ever used one before, but the little you know from fiction inspires you absolutely zero confidence. Whether they come from magic or technology, crossing through time or space like so feels unnatural and incredibly dangerous. What if you end up in an endless void? What if one half of you get stuck on the other side? What if you end up a thousand feet up in the air and fall ineluctably to your death? Your powers cannot protect you from this.
Your niece isn’t here to reassure or guide you, since today’s a school day. You could have waited after school but the sooner you cut all her ties to the Spider Club, the better in your opinion.
You’re doing this for Naomi, you remind yourself, and, with a deep inspiration, you go through the pulsating hexagon.
The whole trip is a torture. You force yourself to let go, just let the current, or whatever is the mysterious force moving your body, carry you to your destination. I hate this, I hate this, I HATE THIS, you mumble to yourself.
Eventually the red and orange surrounding you turn to blue, then to a blinding white light, and the mysterious force transporting you suddenly cease to exist so you… drop like a stone. And crash miserably on the platform coming to meet you. Thankfully, there’s not a soul around to witness your pathetic entrance. You quickly get up, unharmed, except for your pride.
The elevator you’re in happens to be in glass and your attention is immediately monopolized by the views offered to you. Green stretches and futuristic white buildings spread as far as the eye can see. You’re definitely not in Kansas – ahrem, not in New York anymore. You’re so subjugated, you almost miss the elevator coming to a stop and the door behind you opening.
The room in front of you is sizeable, even if its deep whiteness and neon lights give it an hospital like aspect, and full of Spidermen. Women. Teenagers? They’re all wearing their suits and you suddenly feel, at the same time, like a sore thumb standing out, and like you just arrived to a fucking comic con. You start walking, torn between trying to pass unnoticed, and hurting your neck trying to take it all in. You never imagined this place would be so big and have so many people. You may be forced to take those guys seriously after all. All the Spiders walking on ceiling will certainly take you some time to get used to it.
You’re distracted by a cow-boy spiderman whose horse is apparently ALSO Spiderman – Spiderhorse? – since it can walk on the ceiling and wear a mask too, starting to wonder in what kind of mess full of weirdos you got yourself in, when the inevitable happen: you bump into someone.
“My bad”, you apologize immediately.
“No worries, mate”, replies a voice with a thick British accent.
You look up – because, once again, this is someone who’s towering over you – and take in the teenager facing you with an easy smile. Your gaze lingers on his numerous piercings then take note of the spikes on the shoulders of his leather jacket. There’s a punk spiderman? You think to yourself, before taking the good resolution to stop wondering what kind of spidermen exist – obviously the list never ends.
Thankfully the kid doesn’t seem to take offense to your staring as he addresses you in a joking manner:
“Forgot your suit at home? Happens to the best of us. Or maybe you’re Spider-Hoodie?”
It’s your day off and your tracksuit, sport shoes and zip-up hoodie could never pass for a superhero costume.
“I… I’m a new recruit”, you answer with less confidence that you would have liked. What if they consider you an intruder? Sound the alarm and send a thousand spidermen after you to throw you in an interdimensional jail?
“You don’t sound so sure about that”, he raises an eyebrow, eyeing your watch. “You know what you’re getting into?”
It’s your turn to raise an eyebrow.
“I’ll manage, kiddo, but thanks for the concern.”
He raises his hands in surrender.
“Just checkin’, that’s all. Name’s Hobie Brown, by the way.”
You give your own name in answer, but as you go to shake his hand, you stop dead in your tracks.
“You… change colours? You change colours. That’s a thing. Ok.”
You stupidly stare at him as he goes from the traditional blue and red of spiderman to just red to pink to settle on black and white. He chuckles at your confusion.
“You’ll get used to it. So, you know where you’re going, Newbie?”
“I’m supposed to meet with Miguel, I guess.”
Hobie doesn’t even try to hide the antipathy that name seems to evoke for him.
“The big boss man, ‘course. You in a hurry? Cause if you’re not, we could take the scenic route.”
You can’t stop the smile that spreads your lips.
“You’re always looking to make new recruits desert and stand up the boss?”
“Always. Antagonizing the authorities is one of my favourite hobby.”
You laugh frankly.
“That’s terrific. I think we’re gonna get along great. Scenic route it is!”
Along Hobie, you pass through the Spider Society’s jails, or at least the room where they stock what they call “Anomalies” before sending them to their original dimension. You have a look at their “Strength and Conditioning Centre”, which is really just a fancy and stupidly complicated way to say “gym”, but you can’t help feeling eager upon seeing their state of the art weight machines. You meet Hobie’s friends, Gwen, a melancholic yet resolute teenage girl, and Pavitr, a psyched-up teenage boy for who becoming spiderman sounds to be the best thing that ever happened to him. His enthusiasm momently makes you feel weird, reminding you of the not so long ago times where you only saw your powers as a curse, but you keep your mouth shut. Your own experiences aren’t universal and you have accepted years ago that your opinion isn’t prevailing. Not to mention that ruining a kid’s fun would be quite shitty of you.
You also don’t say anything about the alarming number of teenagers that appears to compose the ranks of the Spider Society. Naomi is the only kid who’s your responsibility, and therefore the only one you have any rights or authority over. Thinking back about your own youth, which was the period when you got your powers, you know from experience that stopping a 15 years old with superpowers to do whatever they want is, for ordinary humans, close to impossible.
Eventually your new acquaintances guide you to Miguel’s… –  you can’t possibly call that an office – crypt? Mancave? At first you don’t understand why they stopped since there is nothing in front of you, but then you hear a sound of machinery running and follow the others’ gazes, somewhere much higher than where you were legitimately looking, and finally see the man. He’s standing on a descending platform equipped of a myriad of orange screens, so many that you can’t imagine how he manages to get his bearings between them all, back turned to you.
This is all good and well, except for the fact that his platform is going down at a painfully slow pace that makes you cringe just watching it happen.
“What’s happening?”, you ask the others. You find it hard to believe that with how advanced the technology here seems to be, there’s no way to make this stupid platform go faster.
“That’s his… thing.”, says Gwen. “Don’t mind him.”
You let escape a nervous laugh, the kind you have when you start feeling yourself go crazy.
“Is this a joke? It has to be a joke. Are you guys hazing me? I’m too old for this bullshit.”
The profound silence and the awkward grimaces that greet your remark makes you realize that, no, this isn’t a joke. You don’t know whether to pinch the bridge of your nose or roll your eyes. You want to tell them that they’re all a bunch of crazy freaks in costume and that you never should have come here. Then you grasp that this problem is actually very easy to solve and you leap on the platform. Like you’re in a fucking Mario game.
“What’s up, Miggy?” you force out, with the most insincere smile you can muster, not bothering to hide your irritation.
“Oh, you’re there. Great. Let’s get this over with”, he says with a deadpan voice and an even more deadpan face. That’s when you realize he didn’t even notice your presence until now, too absorbed in his screens. Add to that the fact that he looks like he just pulled an all-nighter. “And don’t call me that”, he adds afterwards, like an afterthought, frowning.
You restrain yourself from telling him he looks like a zombie, and decides to be proactive. The truth is, you learned teamwork the hard way – in the line of fire –, because it never came to you naturally, and you honestly despise it. Nonetheless you know when to put your feelings aside when the situation calls for it.
“Sure”, you start, slowly, testing the waters. ”How about finding some place with chairs and maybe even a table and some coffee? I was sooo excited to join you guys I didn’t sleep a wink last night.”
That last sentence is an obvious bootlicking lie that Miguel doesn’t buy, and he looks like he’s about to refuse, so you pout at the best of your abilities, trying to make him understand that you’re more stubborn than him, and he relents in a sigh.
“Alright. Follow me. And you three – he looks severely at the teenagers nearby – I’m sure you have better things to do.”
You bid farewell to the spider kids who obey Miguel with more or less reluctance.
“Lyla”, he calls out, “Can you tell Jess and Peter to meet us in the conference room?”
You open your mouth to ask who the hell is Lyla, because to your limited knowledge there is no one of that name in the room with you, and leave it open in incredulity when a light in the shape of a woman appears over Miguel’s shoulder and answers him.
“On it!”
“What the fuck is that?”
Alright, that may have been kind of rude, but you’ve had it with all the weird shit around here. You’ve been holding in your comments pretty good until now.
“Lyla’s my personal assistant.” Even if Miguel deigns to answer you, it sounds more like he did it automatically rather than anything else. He keeps walking without sparing you a glance and you follow.
“I’m an holographic AI software“, adds Lyla, who sounds glad to show off.
“You have holograms? That’s so cool… wait. So you’re from the future or something?”
“In my dimension the year is 2099. I’ll explain in details when we get there.”
And so your little trip continues in silence, one which is neither awkward nor comfortable. You think about how Lyla seemed way more chattier than Miguel, so you try your luck.
“Lyla?” There really is something particular about calling the name of someone – something – who you know isn’t there but who you expect to answer nonetheless.
“Yeah?” she replies, materializing in front of you, laying on her back with her hands crossed behind her neck, like she doesn’t have a care in the world. Which you supposed should be expected from a computer program.
“You don’t answer only to Miguel?”
“I am available to assist all members of the Spider Society in protecting the multiverse, but Miguel’s requests take priority.”
“What can you do exactly?”
“Sooo many things… I transfer calls between Spider Society’s members, I detect and track anomalies all over the multiverse, I check the state of the canon, I predict the appearance of canon events, I help Miguel create gizmos and goobers…”
You understood half of that but assume Miguel will explain soon the jargon. You chat amicably with the AI while being careful to not lose Mr Dark And Brooding because you know you will get lost.
***
“Did you get all that?”
After listening religiously to Spiderman 2099 for close to an hour and being bombarded with information, you need a moment to get your act together. You feel like you accidentally tore open the fourth wall of reality itself when you shouldn’t have and what you saw on the other side changed you forever. Alternatives dimensions are real and infinites. You are currently in another dimension where the year is 2099 and New York is named Nueva York. The possibilities are endless. Somewhere out there, there are worlds where your sister is still alive. Where you died instead of her in the accident. Where you don’t have powers.
Miguel’s question brings you back on earth, however. To yearn for another existence can only leads to death and destruction.
“Yep.”
Bad answer. He puts his hands on his hips and raises a sceptical eyebrow.
“Did you now?” His voice is dripping with sarcasm and you want to punch him again.
“Yeah I got it. The multiverse exists. Don’t stay in another dimension for too long or everyone dies. Do not interfere with fixed events or everyone dies. Do not let people from other dimensions linger in one that’s not theirs or everyone dies. This is pretty basic sci-fi time travel’s rules. I just compacted your lecture in three sentences, you’re welcome.”
“Che maravilla. Then you can be in charge of giving my “lecture” to the new recruits.”
“I’d say I don’t make a good pedagogue but at least I’ve never thrown a desk at a kid.” You retort without missing a beat, crossing your arms, a sneering smile spreading your lips, staring back at Miguel.
You can’t really be mad at him for the sarcasm, it’s your favourite form of humour after all. But if he wants to play, you’ll give as good as you get.
Once again, Peter plays the peacemaker.
“Heyyy Miguel, didn’t you want to ask about her powers?”
The aforenamed sits for the first time since you arrived in the room, in the chair facing you.
“Lyla, can you take notes of this?”
Lyla makes a military salute.
“From what I’ve gathered firsthand – he rubs his jaw where you punched him – you have enhanced strength. Is your skin completely impenetrable? What about the rest of your body?”
“Enhanced speed, enhanced stamina. I’m almost unbreakable. My muscles and my bones included. My eyes are not.”
“Define “almost”. ”
“The most damage I’ve ever sustained was when I took a shotgun to the head and it knocked me out for a couple days. Otherwise I’m usually bulletproof.”
“What about fire? Are you also immune? Electric shocks? Explosives?”
“Yes, yes and yes.”
It’s like having a conversation with your doctor.
Peter lets out an enthusiastic “wow” and Jessica considers you more attentively. As for Miguel, you can’t tell if he’s impressed or satisfied to have a promising recruit. However you’re quickly interrupted in your analysis of his expression as he stands up.
“Get up. Time to show what you’re capable of.”

Hello Lee.... I come bearing QUESTIONS about your MLP versions of your OCs. Such as: was there a process for coming up with their names? And: how did you figure out their colours? Who was the hardest to name? And, similarly, whose colours did you struggle with the most? :0
YAHOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OUGUHGRU YOURE SO COOL
THIS IS THE POST WE'RE TALKING ABOUT BTW
OK SO as for the names there was a forum online that i specifically referenced with a guide to naming mlp ocs and it was hella funny, the gist was this:
Tumblr media
i mostly ignored that first rule just bc a few of these ocs would not have a super """"girly"""" name so most of them are puns or figures of speech!!!!! theyre all based off of their ultimate talents or their personalities, which means what i do is i think of an adjective or noun that could be associated with them (for example, free runner -> light on her feet -> light) and then either think of a pun or go to google and type in "phrases with [word] in it" and choose one that makes sense (light + speedy = lightspeed)!! some of them were straight up references WITHOUT me mashing two words together ("turing" is from alan turing father of modern computer science, "chatterbait" is a specific type of lure for fishing while also being a reference on how sae tends to go on tangents lmao).
rie's was a bit of a struggle at first just because i was going back and forth between MULTIPLE names, like i was kinda set on her having a one word name like rarity but i needed it to be more specific to her?? she was royal charm for a bit, then royal, then PEARL (bc i looked at her actual outfit), and THEN the pearl jam pun struck me like the hand of god
I STRUGGLED THE MOST WITH ERINS NAME LMFAOOO!!!! which is why that name was not even my idea it was @makowo 's fhdjhgfkdgjkd. i was so ready just to call her pippy because:
Tumblr media
BUT thankfully i got a much better name. also the idea of her cutie mark basically condemning her to a life of childrens entertainment is both horrifying and kinda funny. girl you are NOT getting a break even in the my little pony universe.
COLOURS WERE VERY FUN!!! just for the sake of them Being Recognizable as My Ocs i kept their hair colour the same lmfao, if i were to go back id probably get a little more funky (pearl gem could absolutely use some purple highlights). for their haircoat i typically would use a primary colour on their outfit and would sometimes adjust!!! for example, i knew i wanted naomi's haircoat to be associated with red as that is the main colour i typically associate with her, so the coat was the colour from her jacket. because her hair was already very dark, having the coat colour also be dark wasnt as clashing so i didnt need to adjust a lot!! i DID however adjust erins to be a bit lighter just because it looked nicer than having an extremely saturated yellow lol. hooves were usually decided by me choosing a colour on them (very typically hair colour) and either adjusting it to be darker or leaving it white in two cases!! OTHER COLOURS were decided based on how important the colour is to the character's outfit. like filly shapes/erin HAD to be yellow in my eyes just because she is soooooo bright + it sits nicely with the red hair, but because she is a very colourful character i added a whole lot of ribbons with the other colours of her costume :)) naomi got a few spots on her just because of her moles, sae got her birthmark, and a few other characters got their stomachs coloured in just because i thought it looked cool lmfaooooo
hardest to colour hmmmmmmmmmmmmm for RIE i initially had her coat as light purple, as she is a very purple character to me lmfao, but thought it would both compliment the hair colour and also accent the purple more if she was primarily white (the colour of her undershirt, ALSO i was looking up white show horses as reference for her specifically lol). so i went back and forth for a bit....... chatterbait also tbh. originally she was a lighter green colour for her jacket but then i was like nahhh the green on her overalls is better and went back. other than that they were pretty straight forward!!!! mouse trap and turing were the most obvious to me i feel like i had colouring in mind for those two from the second i placed my pen on my tablet
GOD i really am talking a whole lot about ponies THEYRE HONESTLY JUST SO MUCH FUN LOL. IVE KINDA BEEN GOING CRAZY JUST DESIGNING A WHOLE BUNCH FOR SOME FRIENDS LIKE IM HAVING A BLAST OVER HERE. I LOVED COMING UP WITH EVERYTHING AND IM SUPER HAPPY YOU ASKED ME ABOUT IT :]]]]] SO THANK YOU!!!

The theme in Nope (2022) of Hollywood's whitewashing of history from media, and how everyone knows the horses name but not the jockey really had me thinking about The Impossible (2012).
The "Horse" in The Impossible is the tsunami, anybody old enough will remember the tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean, it still is one of the largest ever recorded, it took 230,000 lives, it was BIG.
The "Jockey" in The Impossible is the real family that the story is based on. Because while it's cute and it gets arses in seats to have baby Tom Holland, Ewan Mcgregor and Naomi Watts on the big screen, the fact of the matter is that the original family were Spanish, and the story could have been told the same way with Spanish actors. Or one of the many amazing stories of Taiwanese families, or India, or Sri Lanka. But no, at the end of The Impossible the white family walk past devastated Taiwanese people who are injured and separated from family onto a private jet that flies them off to their happy ending.

Chapter 7 - Sense of Humor

To read this chapter, click or tap the 'Keep reading' button. You can also find this chapter on AO3!
"Even with a couple of healing potions and a visit from a priest of Mara, it took me a few weeks to get back on my feet," Lorelai said, running her hand along her left shin. "My nose never really healed right and I still have some pain in my foot, but I got to keep my leg. Thank Kynareth for that."
She was careful to leave the amulet out of her story. It was tucked safely under her armour, but she would have to find somewhere safe to keep it while they travelled together.
Lorelai looked out towards Lake Ilinalta. The rain had slowed, and the clouds were beginning to clear.
"Nobody in Dawnstar recognized the name of the ship, and, not having any coin, I wasn't able to afford passage back to High Rock. I've been working as a courier since then, trying to save up the fare.
"You don't remember anything else? Your name, your family? Any memories of who you were?"
"No. Just the bit before the ship went down and a few glimpses here and there. There's a big gap between getting hit by the boom and waking up at Thardan and Hargi's hut a couple days later, too - not that I really want to remember the rest of that night, even if I could."
Taliesin smiled sadly, letting out a chuckle. Clearly the gods enjoyed a little irony. He wished that they would focus more on being merciful.
Hearing his laughter, Lorelai scowled at him. "What? Is that so funny to you? A little bit of concussion humor?"
"Oh! No, I didn't mean it that way. It's just… Ironic. You can't remember who you are, your family, or where you come from, and wish that you could. Whereas I…" He looked away, as though he had said something he shouldn't have.
She wanted to press further, but Taliesin stood up and put a hand out from under the overhang.
"The rain has stopped. We'd best be headed to Falkreath if we want to make it there before nightfall." He moved to the other Justiciar's body and, sitting it up, began to peel off the agent's robes.
"What are you doing?!" Lorelai looked away, scandalized.
"Agent Sanyon died of a blow to the head. My robes are ruined, but his are only a little bloodied. We might have use for them in the future. Him," Taliesin looked down at Sanyon's corpse, "Not so much."
He finished his work and stuffed the rain-soaked and bloodied robes into the now-empty knapsack Lorelai had found. "We left our horses down near the main path. You can take Sanyon's."
. . .
"She's beautiful." Lorelai stroked the horse's nose. "What's her name?" "Sanyon called her 'Peaches', after the fruit. They grow in Cyrodiil, mostly, and in the southern parts of High Rock."
"Peaches…" Lorelai repeated. "It suits you," She said to the horse. "Sweet and fuzzy."
Peaches whinnied, pushing her nose towards Lorelai. Lorelai continued to stroke the horse, gently scratching the top of her head. "And your horse?" She looked to Taliesin, who was standing next to a beautiful stark white mare.
"This lovely creature," Taliesin put his hand on his horse's saddle, "Is called Naomi." He looked over to Lorelai, watching for her reaction.
Lorelai snorted, then covered her mouth with her hands, laughing. "I'm so sorry," she wheezed, "it's just. Naomi?" She giggled again. "I didn't expect a Thalmor Justiciar to have a sense of humor like that."
"I'm one of a kind." He smiled. He had been waiting for someone to appreciate that pun for years - since he'd arrived in Skyrim.
Perhaps being presumed dead wouldn't be so bad after all.

how do you go about finding all of these pictures? how do you decide what to search? is there like a specific methodology?
I don’t have a super specific methodology i think, I mostly just look up search terms i think would be cool but I’ll do my best to explain 😭😭
in the editorial section i usually look for celebrities or events or brands and i usually sort oldest to newest but it depends. I also use the homepage sometimes cus it has the most recent events!! I usually just choose the celebrities based off who i like or ppl i find kinda interesting or sometimes who ppl are talking ab but its kinda a spur of the moment thing. I also tend to go down rabbit holes a lot lol 😭 sometimes tho if i think of it ill make a mental note of someone to search. There r also ppl i check semi regularly like kim kardashian. And sometimes I’ll just look up more conceptual things or historical things which turn up some very interesting results!!
For the creative section, it’s a little more complicated because there’s so many pictures and i kinda prefer the vintage ones so i sort it from newest (there’s no oldest option) and then i just play around with the filtering options until theres only 99 pages and then i go the 99th page and work my way back from there if that makes sense. I tend to go thru rabbit holes here too like looking at everything by a certain illustrator or photographer/studio. the filters i use the most are image style (i tend to go for sparse or copy space) and sometimes people depending on if i want ppl in the picture or not lol and i filter by ethnicity a lot because an overwhelming amount of the results are white 😭 for search terms i honestly just put random stuff, sometimes really generic stuff like “horse” and sometimes really specific like a “3D hand holding the world” or something idk 😭😭
My general rule is if i want something specific and real like a person or an advertisement i go to editorial and if i want something much more general i go to creative (i mean its kinda in the name but)
ex. “Naomi Campbell fur coat” vs “fur coat” and then filtering thru the options
Hope this helps sorry i kinda suck at explaining 🫣😬

This is my first time doing this, and I definitely won't do all the prompts, but why not:
Whumptober, day 3, prompt: Gun to temple (kinda) and "Say goodbye"
Fandom: Elena of Avalor
Characters: Elena, Esteban, Shuriki
Other: takes place post canon, mentions of the Secret of Avalor, Song of the Sirenas and Esteban's betrayal, no gore or actual violence I think, angst but no comfort :(
The drumming of horseshoes on stone resonated through the courtyard. The beating of the hooves was fast, almost frantic, as if the horses were galloping in a panic and it sounded sharp when echoed and multiplied by castle walls.
Elena found herself running towards this sound. The corridors for some reason were extremely long and dark, as if all the windows had disappeared, and yet she could find her way perfectly. If only she wasn't so far away.
She finally reached the balcony, running to the railing and almost falling over it as she leaned out.
The sky was bright, summer blue. A few white clouds, flowing lazily like sunflowers seeds through the air, passed the sun every now and then but didn't manage to cover it for even a moment. Sharp, but warm rays found their way safely towards the ground, where they laid gently on the polished stone castle walls and reflected in the fountain in the courtyard.
A carriage had just arrived and the passengers spilled out in a cascade of laughter. Francisco extended his hand to Luísa to help her out, and she of course eagerly took it. At the same time, Esteban got off on the other side and wanted to help Isabel out, but she rushed beside him not even noticing his gesture, too absorbed by some story she was telling. Even Mateo and Naomi were there and Gabe was taking care of the horses.
Elena sighed and felt as if the gentle breeze took a giant weight off of her shoulders. She leaned back and looked up into the sky. A wide smile spread on her lips, and she closed her eyes, taking a moment to just feel the warm sunbeams on her face.
But the sun suddenly dimmed. She opened eyes and realized it got covered by dark storm clouds, that visibly came out of nowhere. The sky, clear and bright only a moment ago was now a boiling mass of grey and black matter. Somewhere above rolled a thunder and shook the castle on its foundations.
Panic bubbled up in Elena's chest and she immediately looked back down at the courtyard.
Her friends and family had huddled together into a tight group visibly shaken and looking around for a cause of this sudden darkness. Elena shouted for them and waved to get their attention, but they didn't see her. Another thunder cracked over their heads. A dark green smoke rounded the group on the courtyard.
It writhed around them and twisted like a cursed snake and its hiss made her shake. The snake grew a second head, and another one, and two more… in a moment the whole place was covered in suffocating green fog. Then one head noticed her.
A strand of magical smoke grew slowly up from the ground, and it twisted and turned as it was going up, but she could swear it's green, vicious eyes were still watching her, not loosing her sight for even a moment. The snake rose above her head an finally stopped. Then the smoke dispelled.
"Missed me, Elena?"
"No…" Elena's voice was choked in her throat. "No, you can't be here, you're dead! I killed you!" She was now yelling.
She reached at her hip but her hand clenched on nothing. She didn't have her scepter.
"Ah, ah, ah," a familiar voice, sounding almost playfully, scolded her from behind her back and she felt something hard and cold press into her back. "You won't need this anymore, prima."
Elena turned her head just in time to see Esteban smash her scepter on the ground. The crystal shattered into million pieces, its magical glow shining for just a moment longer, seeming to break through the dark green fog, but it wasn't enough and finally, their light died down. Esteban kicked the twister handle off of the balcony.
Shuriki laughed and her horrible laugh pierced Elena's ears and heart and made the sky itself shudder in another rumble.
"You really thought you could kill me? That you could defeat me?" Shuriki hovered closer on her magical smoke. "Face it Elena, you will never be free of me. I'll find you, always, and I'll finish what's left of your family one by one." She put cold emphasis on the last words in a way that each one felt like a punch straight into Elena's face.
"You're not strong enough to protect them. You're not good enough. And if you can't protect your own family, how can you protect the whole kingdom?" Esteban hissed right into her ear and his words cut almost as much as the tip of his stuff pushed to her back.
"You're weak Elena. And you're all alone." Shuriki drew back but the bitter, triumphant smile was still reigning on her face. "And now," something glistened in her hand and Elena recognized it as the Scepter of Night. The violet gem at the top seemed to suck out all the light from the surroundings that haven't been stifled by the smoke. The scepter was aimed at her friends and family, still frozen in fear on the courtyard. "It's time to say goodbye to your family, Elena."
The world started moving in a slowed down pace. Elena sprang on Shuriki in a desperate attempt to stop her but only found herself falling through the green smoke. A blinding flash of red and purple enveloped the whole courtyard, then the balcony, Elena, Esteban and Shuriki grinning down at her with a mocking smile, and then the whole world. The dark and thundering sky, the boiling clouds of green smoke, even her family all disappeared in a flash of light that was at the same time a curtain of darkness.
And then she sprung up in her own bed, in her own room.
Her breaths were fast and hoarse, she was panting as if she just came out of a fight. She dug her fingers deep into her hair, falling on her face. Her heart, her eyes and her thoughts were racing. She could hear her heartbeat in her chest, in her veins, in her head.
Her eyes were darting. From her cover. Crumpled on the floor. To her pillow. Tossed to the sides. To the lamp that had fallen from the nightstand. Crashed. Then back to her knees, drawn to her chest and the curtains, still pulled out for the night.
Her thoughts were incoherent and tripped one over another as they flooded her brain. Where was she? Where did the smoke go? Where's her family? Are they safe? Where was Esteban? Why did he do that? What did he do? Where did Shuriki go? Where was she? What happened?
The palace was quiet, calm. Her room, apart from her bed, was in perfect order. There was no one else else there. Everything looked normal.
Slowly and gradually she calmed down her breaths. She unclenched her head and straightened her back and legs.
She looked around her room once again. Her covers were crumpled on the floor, and her pillows thrown aside. She must've done it herself, thrashing in her sleep. And the falling pillow must've knocked over the lamp. She was alone, in her own bedroom, when she went to sleep the previous evening. Her family were all sleeping in their bedrooms. They were home. They were safe. No one was there to hurt them.
She looked at her window and the drawn curtains. Through a small crack she could see the sky was only a pale, purple gray color. Hours away from sunrise.
Elena took another deep breath and another one, until she was sure she had calmed down, until she was assured what she saw was just a nightmare. She wiped away the tears from her cheeks, though she couldn't remember herself cry. Slowly, she slid down from her bed.
A shiver ran through her body when her feet touched the cold floor. She was still dizzy and could feel the strain of the sleepless night on her shoulders, but she made her way to her wardrobe.
She's not going to sleep any more this night.

jacqui spends most of her time in ulstead or paris, but she did complete her studies in walt university. she’s assumed to be quite judgmental and cold, easily annoyed. she’s the warmest to her family and family-friends, but takes a while to warm up. she’d be friends with anyone who isn’t intimidated by her and isn’t too annoying rip. like kit she feels lonely sometimes but is unsure how to get out of that. she doesn’t know how to be more likable, she doesn’t want to sacrifice her identity as a queen-to-be.  she would have had only maximum 2 long-term partners lmao, but perhaps there was a one-night stand here and there. she is also a bit of a flirt, but don’t expect anything.

So I said I would do a small haul of Birthday gifts and other book acquisitions from October because there was a lot; This isn't all of them. However some of them have already been put away, and a few had to be replaced because USPS ate them. But this is getting to the point where keeping them all set to the side is getting annoying so here they are so I can squirrel them away for a bit: Biographies: Born A Crime (Trevor Noah), A Promised Land (Barack Obama), The Life and Adventures of Nat Love (Nat Love), On Politics and the Art of Acting (Arthur Miller),& Echoes Down the Corridor (Also Arthur Miller) Classics: Jane Austen Collective Works, William Shakespeare Anthology, The Art of War (Machiavelli), The Devils of Loudon (Aldous Huxley, yes that one) , Confessions of an English Opium Eater (Thomas De Quincey), The Great Gatsby (Scott F. Fitzgerald), Thus Spoke Zarathustra (Friedrich Nietzsche), Treasure Island (Robert Louis Stevenson), & Death of Salesman (Arthur Miller)
Reference: Reader's Digest The Complete Guide to Sewing circa 1976 for reasons, Greek Myths by Jean Menzies (she has a great lecture channel on youtube), from crook to cook (Snoop Dogg), The Princeton Guide to Historical Research (Zachary M. Schrag), Where Research Begins (Thomas S. Mullaney & Christopher Rea) & the Developmental Editing handbook by Scott Norton fiction: Loveless and Heartstopper I by Alice Oseman, Parris Daillencourt is About to Crumble (Good Old Alexis Hall) , His Majesty's Dragon (Naomi Novik), Eleanor & Park (Rainbow Rowell) Lore Olympus I (Rachel Smythe), White Horse (Erika T. Wurth), Love on the Brain (Ali Hazelwood), The Boy in the Red Dress (Kristin Lambert)

Books I read in 2022!
I spent a lot of this year messing with my brain chemicals, in order to find a medication that worked well for me, and what that means is that I spent a lot of this year varyingly exhausted, out of it, too anxious to function, and a bunch of states in between. So I kind of feel like my reading this year was all over the place too, as a result. But I still somehow managed to do a fair amount of reading! Did you know: I like books. I like books a lot.
Books read: 104
Rereads: 20
Books with male authors: 18
Books with female authors: 83
Books with nonbinary authors: 5
Books with authors of colour: 46
5-star books: 18
4-star books: 48
3-star books: 36
2-star books: 2
1-star books: 0
This year and going forward I plan to not think about these numbers in the context of percentage of books read. I have realised that that approach is unhelpful to me, and too often leads to me choosing to not read anything at all if I don't have something appealing on hand that will increase the percentages on the Morally Correct Stats. It's good to read diversely! But it's also good to just....actually read.
Here's the list of all the books I read this year! Please feel free to talk to me about them! I love talking about books!

Is it too much to ask ✒️ for ALL your OCs names? If it is too much to ask for all of them, how about just your top (fave) three? (I just see that you reblog a lot the ask game I invented and got a little worried that no one asked)
THIS IS A PERFECT BLESSING! WARNING: A LONG POST OF ALL MY OCS!
