Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day!
Repost @heu_in_bc (on insta)
National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to honour, celebrate and stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. The demand for massive systemic change and real progress on Truth and Reconciliation must not be ignored. HEU proudly represents thousands of Indigenous health care workers across the province. Book Recommendations for June!
With June being National Indigenous History Month and Canada being less than a month away, I want to help in centering First Nations, Métis and Inuit voices by recommending a few books by Indigenous authors! [At the end will be a list of links where you can purchase these books]
First I have “21 Things You May Not Know About The Indian Act” by Bob Joseph. This book does a great job at explaining how the federal government has used and continues to use policy as a way to oppress Indigenous Peoples, and provides deeper context to better understand some of the issues that Indigenous People have faced, and continues to face today.
Second is “Seven Fallen Feathers” by Tanya Talaga, which is a beautifully written and heartbreaking account of 7 Indigenous highschool students that passed away in Thunder Bay from the years 2001 to 2011. This book highlights the legacy of colonialism as well as the resilience of Indigenous youth, in fighting against systemic racism.
“Sweetgrass Basket” by Marlene Carvell is the story of 2 Mohawk sisters attending a Residential School. It’s written in Prose Poetry and describes the power of family, culture and language as a source of strength.
My last recommendation is “From the Ashes” by Jesse Thistle, a phenomenal memoir where Jesse recounts his experiences in being in foster care, substance abuse, homelessness and reconnection to his Métis Identity. I actually enjoyed this book so much I’ve written more about it on my page which you can read here!
More Books I’d recommend:
The Break & The Strangers by Katherna Vermette
Indigenous Writes by Chelsea Vowel
Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese
Five Little Indians by Michelle Good
I have a lot of other recommendations too. I might create a followup post because there’s so many great resources by Indigenous authors and creators that I really enjoyed, not just books. If you have a suggestion of a resource you enjoyed or if you check any of these out feel free to send me an ask!

In addition to it being Pride Month, it's also National Indigenous History Month here in Canada.
I would like to take a moment to acknowledge that I am posting from the unceded traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. I am a guest on this land. I strive to spend my time here honouring the people who have lived on this land since time immemorial, as well as doing my best to treat this land with respect and love so it will continue to house and nourish future generations. I hope to listen and learn from the wisdom and ancestral knowledge the First Nations share with us, support them in their fight for land rights and recognition, and do the work within myself that is necessary for continued reconciliation.
Lots of love to Indigenous peoples all over the world, everywhere you are. 💗

June 10th, Day 10/30.
This took forever because I was trying a lot of different things. Pose from the back, trying to draw older people, referencing specific faces but they were straight on while I drew in side profile, etcetcetc.
On the left we have Cora/Maxwell Cooper, (she uses both names) who is Cowichan. She is a two-spirit woman. On the right we Norman Gaspar, who is Woodland Cree and Métis.
I was trying to think about couples who I don't see much of in the LGBT community, and I thought of an older Indigenous couple and rolled with it. I referenced their facial features from actual pictures of Cowichan and Woodland Cree/Métis people. It's also Indigenous History Month.

today is National Day of Mourning and i would like to send a moment of peace to all of my Indigenous comrades here in North America but also globally
we will not let colonialism and white supremacy completely wipe out any more people
there can be no liberation without the liberation of Indigenous people from white settler colonialism

Indigenous History Month
Indigenous History Month June is Indigenous History Month in Canada a time to learn about, get deeper into, and recognize the diverse heritage, unique cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Did you know that through the afforestation areas is a heritage trail? It is named the Old Bone Trail. Listen to the fiddle playing of John Arcand, “The Old Bone Trail“. This is…

After being starved and imprisoned in blockade for months, 120,000 indigenous Armenians in Artsakh just faced mass deportation and ethnic cleansing at the hands of Azerbaijan, aided by their brother country Turkey and supplied military aid by a third genocidal country, Israel. Noting that in case my American friends think this is a small regional conflict-- guess who funds Israel?
Artsakh will be dissolved on January 1st, 2024 and for the first time in 3,000 years, it will be void of Armenians. Hard to put the pain into words. Turkey and Azerbaijan will not stop here, as pan-turkic doctrine claims all of Armenia as theirs. Armenian existence threatens the fabric of Azeri (and Turkish) national identity so it is no surprise they want to annihlate us again.
With the violent occupation of Artsakh, our ancient holy sites will be desecrated and our history rewritten while major news outlets will find pretty words for genocide like "conflict" or "war". No one will punish Azerbaijan's war crimes, no one will remember white phosphorous rain on our homes. And the perpetrators will continue to live a lie.
I think denial is a fragile basis for any relationship, to a person or to a land. What is built on a foundation of denial will break under enough tension, after enough time. I believe we'll be back someday.
And we are our mountains. I think they will always remember us.
