"Are you really from Korea?"
-- Grade 1 to parent volunteer during National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations after she said she was Cree.
Her response: No, not Korean, Cree. It's the name of one of the First Nations groups in Canada.
Kid: Oh, 'cause I thought since they both have the "kr" sound...
Her: No, they're different things, but you're right -- they both start with the same sound.

Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day!
Repost @heu_in_bc (on insta)
National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to honour, celebrate and stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. The demand for massive systemic change and real progress on Truth and Reconciliation must not be ignored. HEU proudly represents thousands of Indigenous health care workers across the province. But I just laughed and I think he got mad--I wish he knew that when an NDN laughs, it's because they're applying a fresh layer of medicine to an open wound.

HOW YOU CAN CELEBRATE INDIGENOUS CULTURE!
Yes, you.
Part of Truth & Reconciliation and preserving Indigenous culture is knowing how to celebrate it in a respectful way, especially on days such as June 21st, National Indigenous Peoples Day.
But how can we do this without appropriating their culture?
Find local listings of National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations and attend with family, friends, and/or colleagues.
Participating in Indigenous events, powwows, and festivals that showcase traditional dances, music, art, and food is a good opportunity to engage with and learn from Indigenous communities firsthand. National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to recognize and acknowledge the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, and participating in events on this day is a way of acknowledging and respecting their history!
Spend the day learning about the Indigenous history of where you live or work
Taking the time to learn about the Indigenous history of your local area or workplace contributes to cultural awareness and education. By doing this, you can develop a deeper understanding of the historical context and ongoing presence of Indigenous communities. To do this, you can read books, watch documentaries, or attend lectures.
Engage with Indigenous Media.
Watch films, TV shows, and documentaries produced by Indigenous creators. This contributes to the representation of Indigenous voices in mainstream media. It helps challenge stereotypes and amplify Indigenous voices and narratives.
Visit an art gallery that features Indigenous art.
Visiting art galleries featuring Indigenous art and consuming music, movies, and literature by Indigenous creators helps promote and celebrate the vibrant cultural expressions of Indigenous communities. You can also purchase artwork, crafts, and products created by Indigenous artists, which helps support Indigenous economies and helps preserve traditional art forms. Some good art galleries/museums are Blue Lotus Art Gallery, Museum of Surrey, Skwachày Logue Urban Indigenous Art Gallery, and more!

Happy belated National Indigenous Peoples Day! (It was on the 21st of June and I'm posting on the 25th)
We had a bunch of activities at my school until noon, all with the participation of Indigenous people (as is only right, of course).
We had an activity on the school field where older kids were taught how to build a tipi, there was bannock, a "games of the north" event, dancing shows, drumming, and an activity about ribbon skirts.
The ribbon skirt thing was originally going to be an activity with a ribbon skirt-maker, but they had to cancel last minute, so I was put in charge of the activity. It was kind of a rainy day, so instead of doing an activity outside I played a video of a readaloud of a book called My Ribbon Skirts and then the kids got to design their own ribbon skirts.
I had a parent volunteer helping me who's Indigenous (Cree from Manitoba) dressed in a ribbon skirt her sister had made her, so the kids got to see one close-up and ask questions about it.
Some of the boys were unenthusiastic about designing a skirt, so I asked her if there was an equivalent for boys they could draw and she said "Yes! Girls wear ribbon skirts, and boys wear ribbon shirts, so you could design that instead!"
The boys were much more enthusiastic after that. :)
P.S. For anyone wondering, if you're Two Spirit (very roughly the equivalent of being trans in Canadian First Nations cultures) you can wear whichever you prefer (many wear both at the same time, which must look super rad).

hey this thanksgiving I ask people to please please please please don't forget about indigenous americans. celebrate all you want, eat turkey, spend time with family, idc, but please do so in respect to the actual meaning behind the holiday and the atrocities committed against natives. your day of thankfulness for all that you have, the things you only have because of colonialism, is a day of mourning for us
