Violet’s makeup

This post is going to be in-depth, so bare with me for its length.

Looking through set photos and within the show, Violet seems to wear a few cosmetic products.

Below is a closeup of Violet in Rubber Man for easier reference I’ve made.

The makeup artist for season 1 was Eryn Krueger Mekash. I did some digging and it turns out she has spoken about her techniques/products!

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter from February 10, 2011 in relation to lips:

“Lip stains are long-lasting and not drying or sticky — we can’t have hair sticking to lips during the dance numbers,” says Eryn Krueger Mekash, head of makeup on Glee, who uses Tarte Lip Stain in Envy on Dianna Agron and Lea Michele.

With Makeup411 (a now defunct makeup magazine site), Eryn Krueger Mekash did a Beauty Breakdown on season 1 of Glee, here are the snippets worth noting:

[Lea Michele as Rachel Berry] Blush Stila Convertible Color in Petunia on apples of cheeks […] Mascara CoverGirl LashBlast Volume Blasting Mascara in black on top lashes only […] Lips Korres Lip Butter in Pomegranate or Smith’s Rosebud Salve

In another interview she brought up the foundation she used on Hollywood for the men to retain the “no makeup, it’s natural” look:

I love using Tarte BB Treatment cream on men. It gives a touch of color and has a mattifying agent and SPF. […] Polished looks start with foundation that is buffed in and minimal powder. Those cameras can still see every brush stroke so that is still a big priority.

With Allure magazine, she said her personal all-time favorite products were:

"I have always loved Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat for lots of highlighting—undereyes, nasal labial folds. Also a great moisturizer and all around cure-all is Egyptian Magic. It's great for chapped lips, dry skin, rashes. I am ridiculous about my own makeup. I slap it on and blend it later—I have no time to do proper makeup on myself. My staples are Colorscience Sunforgettable Mineral Powder in Perfectly Clear, Benefit's Bad Gal Lash mascara, Senna Totally Transforming Concealer, Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation for special occasions, Laura Mercier Eyebrow Pencil in Blonde, and Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes in Purple (6L), Taupe (24L), and Black. I don't like touching myself up and I want everything to last a really long time."

However in this interview with Style Caster:

EKM: We use Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water Cloths, Moisture Foundation and Oriental Plants Skin Lotion Spray quite a bit. We also love Makeup Forever HDfoundation Matte Velvet Foundation and Acqua Cremes for staying power.

Healthy looking skin is an important part of the youthful look – and not too much powder, not heavy foundation.

Now back to Violet’s makeup and what I believe she used and did.

I do not believe Eryn Krueger Mekash used much mascara on Taissa. If she did, it looks to be more on the top lashes (just like Michele’s on Glee). What’s visible to me though is the very subtle eyeliner around her eyes. There is no wing apparent.

Violet’s lips do have a luster as you can see in the image above, but in the below image it’s more matte. I am torn between Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Tint and Stila Convertible Colors.

All-in-all Violet’s makeup is not heavy or flashy; it gives a natural, youthful impression. Clearly the makeup does vary with each episode but not a lot. Considering she is 15-years-old and juggling so much chaos, it makes sense for her character.

More Information Concerning Interactive Pikachu

Not long after finding the info from the Furby website about Interactive Meowth and Interactive Pikachu in 2021, I found a document talking about Argos and Hasbro that mentions the Pikachu toy. However, I was very confused at the time, thinking, “Is this really talking about the unreleased toy, or is this about something else because Interactive Pikachu was never released?” This was why I didn’t share it earlier.

But, the document is talking about the unreleased Pikachu toy. Also, I recently found a transcript two days ago, for a court case between Argos and Hasbro UK, concerning the same matter the document talks about.

Some copy and paste work because I can’t be bothered retyping everything:

Here are mentions of Interactive Pikachu in a document concerning agreements between Hasbro UK and Argos. I have NOT read much of the document, but the document talks about how the price of the toy was changed by Argos and Littlewoods from £23.99 to £23.75. Here’s another important bit of info: "The Interactive Pikachu toy was priced at £23.75 in the A/W 2000 catalogues of both Argos and Littlewoods. This is significant because it is not the original RRP nor a natural price point (such as £23.99), but the price which both Argos and Littlewoods arrived at by communication through Hasbro." I think the image of the Ocean Ripples Furby on a purple background (that’s currently on the wiki) is from the Autumn/Winter catalogue. The Ocean Ripples Furby image I posted earlier came from the same catalogue that the Interactive Pikachu is in. Interactive Meowth is not mentioned in the documents I found, so Idk if it is in the catalogue.

While I still don’t know Hasbro’s reason for not releasing it, the fact that it appeared in an Argos catalogue for 2000 seems to imply that Argos was planning to sell it at some point that year. As for the Ocean Ripples Furby, I don’t know why it’s there but maybe Hasbro was planning to release the generation 10 Furbys that year but didn’t do it. There’s also speculation that the image may have just been used as a placeholder, which is possible.

Elise Allen mentioned (links to another post I made) she wrote lines for an “E.T. Furby” and “Pikachu Furby”, and that they were going to have her do a “Mike and Sully” one.

17/9/2023 (UPDATE)

Here’s a screenshot of an Interactive Pikachu toy listing with a price of £23.75 in the Argos catalog. The photo looks like a Pikachu plush or I Choose You Pikachu, strangely. A HD scan of the page would be appreciated.

Another thing:

This post is talking about an unreleased interactive version of Pikachu that, unlike I Choose You Pikachu, can move its eyes and tail, speak to Furbys or another Interactive Pikachu toy, has voice recognition, and can battle with Interactive Meowth.

Like Interactive Pikachu, I Choose You Pikachu has blushing cheeks, a moving mouth, and moving ears, but it lacks the other features I mentioned. I Choose You Pikachu also came out in 1999, but Interactive Pikachu was supposed to be released in 2000.

The thing about the lamentable downward trend in streaming music sales is -- when I tried to look up where they were going, all the articles I read pretty much said "on smartphones." Even the Atlantic, which I read on and off, quoted an article from Quartz titled "American Smartphone Owners Are Listening to Less and Less Music"

It's not clear to me why this would be happening. I have a few guesses:

"The rise of video on YouTube and other similar sites, like TikTok, drove people away from music, and they're mostly staying there." (A guess about the whole "American culture is heading towards a video monoculture" thing that I feel like I see a lot of people talking about, but not many actual articles.)

("Video works fine on phones, but listening to music, or even talking to someone on the phone, doesn't.")

"I don't know, Americans are increasingly deprived of pleasure."

The point is, it seems like a small class of things that are easily shareable over the internet. People have been sharing photos for years, now they're sharing video, soon maybe they'll be sharing audio. If I'm right about this, music will be the next thing to suffer.

The real problem with this model is that we're not enough years in the future to see that it's true, yet. Maybe, in 10 years, we'll be listening to a lot less music than we do now, because, like, most music is shit, whereas most photographs and videos are worth seeing, or at least worth spending 10 seconds clicking on. But all the data I can see is on the last 12-18 months or so, and there's no real evidence yet of a shift in this direction.

The initial "decline of music" articles (Billboard, investment analysts, etc.) cited something called "Smartphone Music Survey 2018." This appears to be a US survey of US adults (18+), done by Nielsen for the National Association of Music Merchants.

I found a copy of the survey results here on Github. Here are the relevant charts:

So, in the past two years or so, about 15% of the time people in the USA used to spend on the radio, streaming, or CDs is now going to Spotify instead. Note that by "Spotify" in these charts I mean all sources of music combined -- i.e. including iTunes.

I don't know how old the people in these surveys are, but now I'm wondering if it's possible that this is just a shift to Spotify among millennials and Gen Z. My impression is that for people under 40, all that is left of the traditional radio/CD listening market are the very youngest Gen Z and the oldest millennials (people 30-40). Because they don't spend a lot of time on Spotify in those age groups -- the 18-24 male cohort has way more time for Flipnote Studio HD than for, like, streaming.

I feel like I'm getting off topic here, but. . .

Is there really any . . . "class" . . . of people who just . . . watch a lot of video . . . ?

On TV I mean, not on YouTube or wherever.

I don't think I know any such people, and I suspect that most people I know don't know any such people, either. Maybe there is an imaginary internet person who uses YouTube for everything, including news, and for whom videos are a more natural form of expression than text. But I don't know any such people, and I suspect the idea of such a person is mostly a result of not knowing any such people.

If you took out my text posts and my voice posts on Facebook, would you get a more or less complete picture of the "me" from my two YouTube videos? Would you guess the guy in one of those videos and not the other? Would you be able to tell them apart if I edited the relevant audio and video out of them? Could you imitate me to my face? (I think you would.)

I wonder how much of "video as a content format" is just video in the most literal sense of the term, where you see something on a screen, as opposed to a more conversational mode where you get an image of something but it's just in your head.

For instance, here is a description of a "talking head" video:

A "talking head" video is characterized by a shot of the camera focusing on the host's head and face. The speaker looks directly at the audience in a way that typically does not convey that the viewer can see the speaker's face.

I'm pretty sure that I have never in my life experienced the "speaker looking directly at me" variant of the talking head video. (Although I imagine there are a lot of people who do it on Youtube, maybe?) When I read this description, I get an image of someone sitting in front of a blank wall, talking. That's very far from the experience of watching a video.

"On Youtube, people sit in front of a blank wall and type words in the chat" -- what, no, that's not a thing.

I don't know. I think these days I have the impression that talking heads aren't nearly as . . . lively as they are in my head. When I think of Youtube, the image that comes up in my mind is a fixed video of a person on a white background, talking, perhaps gesturing in a way that makes it clear what they're talking about. There is a very distinct impression of "that's not really a video, that's just a picture of a thing, a fixed image, not a moving one." Whereas if I think of a scene from a TV show, it's animated, it's fluid, it's "moving," it has the texture of actual reality.

It seems to me like a lot of what I see on Youtube has this fixed, still-picture-of-a-person-on-a-blank-white-background quality. That's what I'm used to. It's different from videos -- like, on Facebook videos, for instance.

A lot of videos have the quality of a movie, or even a stage play. If you stand in the doorway of your dorm room, you can almost see this Youtuber on a white wall, and even hear his voice, and see his hands. But that's just . . . a picture, a flat image. A moving picture, but still a picture nonetheless. Whereas a TV show has the texture of actual reality, the quality of something that could happen to you, not just things you can see, but things you can feel, smell, taste

First of all I want to tell you that I love your art, every single piece is beautiful and full of detail.

So I’m sorry for bother you but I have a question for you. I’m in a watercolor kick, I don’t paint masterpieces like yours, I’m sticking with flowers and abstract paints. I want to start publishing my art just for fun but I’m not sure what to use to digitize it. I guess I need an scanner but I’m not sure what kind and what should I look for when I check the specifications.

I hope you can help me since I’m completely lost on the subject.

Firstly, art is objective so don't discount your art simply because it looks different from someone else's. The great thing about art is that, if you're doing it right, it's gonna be something ONLY YOU could make, and that is what makes it a masterpiece.

But I'll get off my soapbox for a second to talk about supplies.

I don't have a specific scanner I can recommend because I haven't scanned art in a long time. I imagine just about any mid-range printer/scanner you can get your hands on would do a decent job of capturing your image though. Then you can use a photo editing software to toy with the levels and saturation of the image to do your best to match it to the original. The frustrating part about capturing watercolor is that it never does look quite as good in a picture as it does in-person.

Personally, I like to take a photo of it with an HD camera (I use my iphone) in indirect, natural light, and that usually does the trick. It's difficult to do, but it can be done that way, and it is the preferred technique for professional art capture—I recommend getting used to it if you ever plan on painting anything too large for a scanner to capture.

Once you pay the FULL price, I will scan & send the finalized HD PNG files to you via email (one with 300dpi & the other 600dpi). You can use them as you like, so long as you credit me & if the use is not commercial in nature.

REFUNDS:

If I (the artist) am unable to complete your request for any reasons where I am at fault, it will be refunded 100%

If you (the client) cancel anytime after the sketch phase, you will be refunded 50%
