Ten years ago today, Gorō Naya died at the age of 83.
This is a sketch of Kōichi Zenigata standing next to the memorial of his ancestor, Zenigata-Heiji, which is located near Kanda Shrine in the Akihabara area. The area it stands in is even coin-shaped ("Zenigata" means "coin-shaped").

I honestly find the behind the scenes story of the original Lupin III cast and the Fuma Conspiracy film to be a sad and bittersweet story.
Yasuo Yamada who originally played Lupin III played this character for years only to be recasted in the Fuma Conspiracy, becoming extremely hurt with this decision and this leading to his falling out with Monkey Punch, even though Yamada was later casted for future media, his relationship with Monkey Punch never recovered.
Monkey Punch made the character of Lupin III and the character’s personality, and a decision lead to the seiyū of Lupin having a poor relationship with him up until the seiyū had died.
And when Yasuo Yamada died in 1995 from a brain hemorrhage, his fellow cast members were devastated, especially Gorō Naya who played Inspector Koichi Zenigata.
“Hey, Lupin, who the hell am I supposed to chase after now?”
Naya was crying and in anger while in character when he said this at Yamada’s eulogy, devastated at the loss of his friend and fellow actor.
Kanichi Kurita filling the role in the new film released after Yamada’s death, Farewell to Nostradamus
“To Yasuo Yamada, Eternal Lupin the Third: Thank you!” was in the credits of Japanese copies of the film.

A thousand years from now, the Earth as we know it has been destroyed by the Seven Days of Fire, and the planet is covered by a Sea of Decay. Nausicaä, Princess of the Valley of the Wind, lives in harmony with the natural environment and the dangerous insects that live there. Fearful nations seek to harness the power of the ancient Giant Warriors to conquer the Valley of the Wind and destroy the Sea of Decay.
As of this writing, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) is my favorite Hayao Miyazaki film. The world feels dynamic and real in the same way as Frank Herbert’s Dune. The animation is gorgeous as well as the score and audio design. The best part of the film, however, is the character of Nausicaä herself. She’s someone who believes that life and nature are precious, and she recognizes that violence is preceded by fear. She doesn’t compromise her ideals, but struggles and sacrifices to save her fragile kingdom by the sea.
This film is so beautiful and the action sequences are so exciting. The script is perfectly paced. It’s the kind of film you just want to live in. I really want a pet fox-squirrel and ceramic sword that makes that sound when I use it.

One of my favourite little tidbits of the old-school anime world involves the Japanese dub of Monty Python’s Flying Circus (or as it was re-titled, Sora-tobu Monty Python.) That might sound silly enough on its own, but bear with me.
The legendary British comedy series was being translated for the Japanese market right around the time the Red Jacket series of Lupin III was under production. For whatever reason, the studio decided to use the voice actors of Lupin (Yasuo Yamada) and Zenigata (Gorō Naya) in a number of the translated scenes.
youtube
And if you’re a fan of both Lupin and Monty Python, that gives you an extra layer of silliness to enjoy, since they often seem to play their roles right to type. Here’s “Zenigata” teaching the art of self-defence against fruits.
youtube
A lot of Monty Python’s humour comes from poking fun at the cultural specificity of British class divisions in the 1970s, so adapting it into any other language is always going to be tricky. That said, the amazing line-reads and ad-libs these veteran voice actors came up with certainly helps make up for whatever gets lost in translation.

Zenigata passed out in the jail in Episode 32 of ‘Lupin III Part III’. I love the way his lips are parted, like the sleeping cook in the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Efteling, although I think I made him look more like a George Condo painting.

Zenigata arresting Lupin in Part III Episode 32.
There’s something striking about the way his lips are parted, like the enchanted cook in the Sleeping Beauty castle at Efteling. I also think that some of the ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ characters get their expressions from Lupin III Part III.
