The Art of Distillation
“When you learn the art of distillation, you will gain a lifelong skill that will impact every area of your life. Think of a storyteller who captivates you with every word. Their story is well distilled, with unnecessary details stripped away. Think about the last time you were entranced by a drawing or painting. Its ability to grab you immediately is a sign that the concept behind the artwork is…

Standing at the bus stop
Standing at the bus stop
Before going to graduate school, I spent a year working at New York University as a lab technician. As a farewell gift, I received a popular book called “At The Bench”. It was supposed to act as my springboard into “real”research. In addition to helpful descriptions of common lab techniques, it also contained some practical life advice. One story that stuck with me through the years is about…

Redefining abstract art
Childhood memories I was 9 years old when we moved from Russia to the U.S. I didn’t speak English and found solace in watching Russian movies that my parents rented from a store nearby. It seems like it was ages ago, but many quotes from those classic Soviet movies stuck with me till today. One of these was from a movie called “Office Romance”, where an office director only cared about…

"I am a cell biologist" T-shirt flashbacks
“I am a cell biologist” T-shirt flashbacks
Science is hard. 98.5% of the time it doesn’t cooperate. And that can really hurt your ego. Even knowing that it’s normal to expect only a tiny percentage of your experiments to work often doesn’t help. And while years of experience can help slightly stack the odds in your favor, science always catches you off guard. Flashbacks and Impostor Syndrome I keep getting flashbacks to my early grad…

I just want to feel this moment
I just want to feel this moment
“If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.”– Lao Tzu I recently heard this quote at it really resonated with me. Despite being a neuroscientist, I had a pretty hazy understanding of the distinction between the 2 terms, but this makes perfect sense. It also made me think of a quote from a…

Just like “Brilliant Mind”, this project started out with an image of a human brain coronal section from the Allen Brain Atlas. As a matter of fact, I used exactly the same cutout. But this time, I used it to only create the perimeter of the cortex. Initially, I tried making the perimeter out of thick wire and sewing it to the fabric, but it was too much of a pain. The wire wouldn’t fold properly and would not come out flat. So I ended up threading the clear silver-lined seed beads onto thin silver wire and sewing it directly to the fabric. But what is all of this stuff sticking out? This problem is precisely what has kept me from starting this project earlier. I needed to figure out how to make the brain perimeter stick out from the fabric. After considering several options, I decided to use many thin wires to connect the layers to each other. It looks just as frazzled as it made me feel! Quite fitting. #neuroscience #brain #neurobiology #biology #artstagram #beadwork #art #artwork #emergingartist #workinprogress #wip #process #neuroart #neurobead #showyourwork #mixedmedia #artinscience #art_dailydose #whatwomencreate #science #brainart #medstudentgift #nervousystem #artworkinprogress #ilovebrains #sciart #artitstsoninstagram (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPWPnVkjrO8/?utm_medium=tumblr

I was looking at the morning glory picture I posted last week and it reminded of this red blood #cell that I made several years ago. This is a #workinprogress shot that love more than the final product. 😂 #blood #hematology #biology #microscopy #beadwork #art #artwork #emergingartist #wip #process #neurobead #etsyseller #showyourwork #mixedmedia #artinscience #art_dailydose #whatwomencreate #science #artstagram #scientistsoninstagram #artistsoninstagram #accessories #artworkinprogress #sciart #artsaremysuperpower (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/COIuamwD1ZH/?igshid=1210ty1ehjvty

“Muted Potential” - Part II
“Muted Potential” – Part II
Juggling work, kids and NeuroBead, I often sit down to write a blog post in unusual places.  This week for example, I am writing from my daughter’s gymnastics studio, where I get an hour of peace and quiet while she is in class. Just as I sat down and started looking through my notes about “Muted Potential”, I happened to look up and see a very fitting quote posted on the wall: “Most of the…

Our mind is a truly beautiful and elusive concept. Despite massive progress in brain research, we still cannot quite explain where our mind is and what it looks like. I created the “Brilliant Mind” by taking schematic images of the human brain from the Allen Brain Atlas and recreating them as beaded histological sections on 6 sheets of plexiglass. The sections can be assembled into a sculpture or you can hang them individually. Please DM me if you are interested in purchasing it! #neuroscience #brain #neurobiology #biology #microscopy #beadwork #art #artwork #emergingartist #workinprogress #wip #process #neuroart #neurobead #showyourwork #mixedmedia #artinscience #art_dailydose #whatwomencreate #science #brainart #medstudentgift #nervousystem #artworkinprogress #ilovebrains #sciart #artstagram #artistsoninstagram #scientistsoninstagra #scicomm (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMmf5DSjzDw/?igshid=6c3zodaqvhsl

Do you know what stem cells can do for you? A million different things! If we learn to harness their power, we can heal our tissues after injury, restore failing organs and even create new ones! This is why I associate stem cells and their signature “rosette” organization with sunrise. Watching the sunrise always makes us feel so optimistic. It signifies a new day full of new possibilities. Makes you feel like you can do anything. Wouldn’t you like to capture that feeling in your home? Come check out the prints in my RedBubble shop or even the original on my website. All links are in my bio. #neuroscience #brain #neurobiology #biology #microscopy #art #artwork #emergingartist #stemcells #cells #neurons #homedecor #redbubble #printondemand #artprint #neuroart #neurobead #showyourwork #mixedmedia #artinscience #art_dailydose #whatwomencreate #science #brainart #gradstudentgift #medstudentgift #nervousystem #ilovebrains #sciart #artstagram (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLCe1XdDbim/?igshid=1qks12mzczizt

Our inner hurricanes
Our inner hurricanes. Can #art help us get out of our own way? Come read more on my blog!
I have written earlier about whether or not it matters if the artist and the viewer put the same meaning into a piece of art. I would imagine that the chances that our points of view match are pretty low. Back then, I mostly thought about it from the point of personal taste, experiences and perspective on life. But I did not pay much attention to context. As we go through the pandemic, I keep…

Thinking outside the box
Thinking outside the box
Sometimes I like to play around with pictures of my SciArt to see what else it could look like. The image of “Attraction” has always made me think of a fan. In reality it is actually based on an image of stem cells that give birth to neurons. You can read more about it here. Attraction, 2019 But for now, here is my most recent digital experiment. Art is my emotional outlet and my oasis.  I…
